sustainability&rsquo
in 1980s, sustainable tourism concept has found new implementation areas. The increasing demand on the tourism activities taking place in rural areas has lead the governments to find ways of benefiting from this tendency in a sustainable way. Since the early 1990s, a new type of rural tourism called as agri-tourism has been developed as a concept that integrates agriculture and tourism activities in the western world. Whether it is evaluated as a tourism or agriculture development element, it is a new element of country planning. Nowadays, it is seen that there is also a new tendency for agri-tourism at local level through local initiatives in Turkey. Although there is still no governmental regulation for agri-tourism activities, political and practical developments demonstrate that the sector should be evaluated as a planning element for Turkey. The main purpose of this study is examining the rural development element characteristic of agri-tourism concept as an element for enhancing the rural tourism activities in Turkey. To achieve the purpose, two examples from EU- Lublin and Tuscany Regions were examined to understand the dynamics of agri-tourism as a planning element. For these study interpretative-comparative-textual method is used. Accordingly, the present condition in Turkey is evaluated through the obtained data and SWOT Analysis method was employed for analyzing the data. Accordingly, some suggestions are presented for developing agri-tourism sector in Turkey.

Full textThe aim of the study is to assess the environmental impact of three alternatives of walling with different aggregate. Option 1 has 100% crushed recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Option 2 has aggregate of crushed rock. In option 3, the aggregate consists of natural gravel in the fine fractions and crushed rock in the rough fractions. The wall element in option 3 is one of the products manufactured by the company Hedareds Sand and Betong AB (Heda), a prefabrication company in the Hedared which is located about 17 km outside Borås. RCA has the obvious advantage of avoiding landfilling of concrete waste. With less costs and less burden on the environment contributes to sustainable development in the concrete industry. Life cycle assessment has been used as a method. Life cycle assessment is a method used to assess the environmental impact of a product or service throughout or part of its lifetime. When life cycle analysis is used to compare different products, as is the case in this study, it can be limited to study part of the lifetime. This study has chosen to study the first two phases of the life cycle of the elements, i.e. the acquisition of raw materials and the transportation of raw materials to the plant where the elements are produced. It has been assumed that the manufacturing process for all three alternatives is the same, which is why it was excluded from the life cycle assessment. The categories chosen to investigate are: Global warming, ozone depletion, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical oxidation and abiotic depletion. In the study, two scenarios have been studied. The first is that the concrete waste is transported from Hedas plant to crushing plant 18 km away and then transport the ballast back to Heda. In this scenario, option 1 has been shown to have a lower impact than option 3 in all categories. This is even though option 3 has fewer transport distances than option 1. But it's option 2 that has the lowest impact in all categories. A strong cause is that option 2 has 80 kg less cement per cubic meter element than the two other options which have the same recipe except for the aggregate. In the second scenario, it is assumed that the crushing takes place at Hedas plant with mobile crushing plant. The scenario shows a strong improvement in option 1 from an environmental point of view. In the new scenario, option 2 has a higher impact than option 1 in two of the categories (ozone depletion + 37% and eutrophication + 2%). In the other categories, option 2 is still better than option 1, although the differences are small. Option 3 is the worst for the environment as it has the greatest impact in all the studied categories. In five of the categories, it is the cement that dominates the environmental impact. In the sixth category, the ozone depletion, it is the transport that contributes most to environmental impact. Overall, the influence of the ballast is relatively less decisive. Therefore, RCA to walling can be beneficial from an environmental point of view if it does not lead to an increase in other raw materials above all cement to compensate for any weaker strength. At the same time if the logistics of recycled concrete is optimized so that it does not involve significantly more and longer transport distances.

The sugar cane plantation is present in Brazil since the Portuguese colonization beginning. The techniques used by the sugar cane industry toward production of sugar, and then alcohol, were not worried with preservation of natural resources, being associated, along its history, with environment damages as deforestation, fires, natural biodiversity injuries, water and soil contamination, among others. However, with the growth of social mobilization and the State rules around natural resources preservation and environmental quality, since the mid-twentieth century, the field and the industry suffered a technical reformulation to reduce their environmental liabilities and increase its scale production, at the same time. The growing demand for renewable fuels originated with international agreements to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases intensified the expansion of the sugar cane industry in the areas of Cerrado in Brazil. The adequate climate (settings), soil and topographical conditions of this biome- territory made the success and intensification of this plantations, reconfiguring the areas an restructuring the environmental where they were planted. In micro south-west of Goiás State works ten sugar cane industries and another one being implemented. The goal of this study is set up a series of information about this sector, its transformations in a technical way, passing trough different phases (sugar cane, than alcohol and energetic cane at least) until nowadays, when incorporates the fame of sustainable development provider. In this search, the relationships between environmental policies, especially post-Kyoto, and the expansion of the sector are emphasized. Inside this, we sought to understand how the installation of the sugarcane industry in the micro region of south-west Goiás could offer empirical subsidies, from a socio-spatial analysis of territorial dynamics and legitimacy of the environmental speech made by the environmental sector. The methodology used was semi-structured interviews with those responsible for environment part and with the mill workers; lifting of the environmental legislation related; analysis of the studies and reports of environmental impacts of installed plants; and research of environmental public Agencies assessments. It was found that technological standard used by new plants installed in the micro south-west Goiás allowed minimize some environmental liabilities historically rooted to the sector. However, the intensification of sugar cane cultivation at this micro region can result in new impacts as increase the use of water for irrigation, soil compaction and monoculture. It is necessary therefore, an environmental regulation that covers the specific situation of the sector and consider the situations experienced by local actors in order to preserve environmental quality.

Abstract: Given the large amount of solid waste generated in the city of Campinas, SP, Brazil and the precariousness of the system of landfills in the region, it is investigated the technical feasibility, economic and environmental use of dry sludge of station water treatment plant and aggregate debris recycled kid in the manufacture of bricks cement soil type and blocks of concrete type. Such components of the building have been tested according to the relevant technical standards of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards, both those related to the physical-mechanical properties as those environmental, considering the periods of manufacturing and post-consumer. These wastes greatly affect the ecosystems where they are launched and today, will be increasingly seen as an alternative source of raw material. With these materials, structural components produced there and sealing in different traits, which were tested for compression simple, the absorption of water, and environmental dimensions. The results showed that the humidity of sludge significantly influence the quality of soil-cement bricks kind, and it is possible only with its confection moisture content below 50%. None brick produced in conditions studied attended both Brazilian standards of quality-size, absorption of water and resistance to compression. The tests showed that no structural blocks of concrete (seal), with up to 3% of dry sludge and 1% of wet sludge, debris aggregate of the two matrices evaluated (concrete and ceramic) and 10% of cement, could serve as the basis for a production industry, for urban infrastructure, as it has obvious economic and environmental gains (is itself making use of a huge environmental liabilities), without loss of technical quality of the products.

Full textNowadays, corporate responsibility is not only an issue for large international corporations but also for small- medium sized enterprise (SMEs) with limited resources and less market power. However sustainable development is not a compulsory lesson for SMEs to take, but it is one of the market approaches for a company to thrive and survive. As Donckels represented (1997) that entrepreneurship of SMEs do all their strength to be on its way to the next millennium. The purpose of this thesis is to describe and understand how sustainable business approaches can influence and enhance SMEs development despite of their barriers and limitations which are associated with their day to day management. For that reason, researchers are aiming to analyze closely and get pragmatic insight into the three dimensions of sustainable development (social, environmental, economic) and how the interaction among these three dimensions will benefit SMEs as a whole.

A growing awareness of the modern society about the direct relationship between a growing global community with increasing total industrial activities on one hand and various environmental problems and a natural limitation of natural resources on the other hand set the base for sustainable or 'green' approaches within the supply chain. This paper therefore will look at the issue of 'Green Logistics' which seeks to reduce the environmental impact of logistics activities by taking into account functions such as recycling, waste and carbon emission reduction and the use of alternative sources of energy. In order to analyze how these approaches and ideas are being perceived by the system as a whole two models from the area of prospective and scenario planning are being used and described to identify the main drivers and tendencies within the system in order to create feasible hypothesis. Using the URCA/CHIVAS model allows us to identify the driver variables out of a high number of variables that best describe the system 'Green Logistics'. Followed by the analysis of the actor’s strategies in the system with the Mactor model it is possible to reduce the complexity of a completely holistic system to a few key drivers that can be analyzed further on. Here the implications of URCA/CHIVAS and Mactor are being used to formulate hypotheses about the perception of Green Logistics and its successful implementation among logistics decision makers by an online survey. This research seeks to demonstrate the usefulness of scenario planning to a highly complex system observing it from all angles and extracting information about the relevant factors of it. The results of this demonstration indicate that there are drivers much beyond the factory walls that need to be considered when implementing successfully a system such as Green Logistics.

Full textThis paper considers the fast changing developments and changes in relation to sustainable development law with its three pillars, and the needs of international development. The focus of the analysis is on the connection between international economic, international social and international environmental law which constitute sustainable development law at their intersection point, and will show how they can be the paths to sustainable peace. As sustainable development law is emerging as international concern, the qualitative approach of this paper will show its pillars separately and their connection under different conditions. This paper also demonstrates that this approach is gaining ground in the literature, and it contends that it is a more appropriate way of addressing the problems of economic, social and environmental. In support of this argument, the paper looks initially how sustainable development law fits to be the path to sustainable peace within the contemporary world which is full of economic, social and environmental conflicts. Secondly, it provides a theoretical framework how sustainable development law with its pillars can lead the world to sustainable peace. Thirdly, the three pillars, (-international economic law, international social law and international environmental law-), will be elaborated in relation to their intersection and sustainable development law.

Full textWater is at the very core of sustainable development, critical for a thriving people, planet and prosperity. Water is regarded as a public good which is fundamental for health and life. Water is so important that it was debated as being a basic human right on many international platforms. Water access has plagued many parts of the world for a long period of time. In recent years, there have been increasingly urgent warnings of a global water crisis, as the human species consistently uses more water than is sustainably available. The international community tried to work towards overcoming these water-related issues by establishing the then Millennium Development Goals (hereafter referred to as MDGs), with MDG7.C focusing on access to safe drinking water. Even though MDG7.C was achieved in part, issues still remained regarding water access and quality. Sustainable Development Goal 6 (hereafter referred to as SDG 6) was then introduced and the scope of SDG6 is much wider than its predecessor, since the water access and scarcity problems are still prevalent today. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes a dedicated goal on water and sanitation that sets out to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. SDG6 expands the MDG focus on drinking water to now cover the entire water cycle, including the management of water, wastewater and ecosystem resources, with water at the very core of sustainable development. The goal has, in essence, extended to include a much broader spectrum of issues that need to be solved which, in essence, unravels even more challenges along the way. As a result, it is imperative to determine whether SDG6 can allow for actual sustainable development in terms of freshwater resources. Thus, this thesis will discuss the advent of the Sustainable Development Goals (hereafter referred to as SDGs), in particular SDG6, as well as analyse how SDG6 impacts on International Environmental Law, with particular emphasis on International Freshwater Law. The main aim of this research is to determine whether the creation and implementation of SDG6 can result in overall freshwater sustainability and whether this can result in the furtherance of sustainable development.

Full textIncreased new sources of revenue need to be explored by political officials to pay for the cost of upgrading our infrastructure to an acceptable level. In addition, developing an effective management, approach is a long-term way to handle a problem as large and as serious as our current infrastructure crisis. Current engineering and construction practices have proved to be detrimental to our environment and depletion of natural resources. The future role of civil engineers should be the prevention of any damage to our environment and natural resources, and this can be achieved by incorporating sustainability into the current engineering and construction practices.
