Abstract:
The library is an essential learning resource center for schools. For this reason, every school or madrasa is required to have a library that meets national education standards. Although formal provisions require educational institutions to have a library, many schools do not yet have a library. The development of school libraries, especially elementary schools (SD), is still lacking compared to the middle school, high school, and college libraries, thus giving the impression that SD libraries are marginalized. This study explored the development constraints that led to the marginalization of elementary school libraries in Singaraja, Bali. This research used a qualitative approach in the form of multiple case studies. The data collection techniques were in-depth interviews with appointed informants, total and purposive samples, and snowball sampling. Data analysis in this study followed Peter Berger's model with conceptualization, proof, and objectivation steps. The results indicated that there were several obstacles to the development of elementary school libraries, namely (1) the dadi-dadi dogen ideology adopted by the principal; (2) the teaching and learning process is still teacher-centered; (3) a comprehensive education system; (4) unprofessional librarian; (5) the government is not in favor of the school library management policy; and (6) free school jargon. These findings prove that the general assumption about the constraints on developing school libraries due to limited financial capital is not entirely true. There are other more important factors, namely power relations related to ideology.

Abstract:
Because of the insufficient teaching hours and the limited time for practice reading in a classroom, using internet can eliminate the restriction of when and where to teach. Through the publishing and broadcasting functions of the new online broadcasting media, podcast, teachers and students can post and share their reading experiences, which can supplement the insufficient reading instruction in a classroom. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of applying podcast, the educational broadcasting media, to reading instruction. From the students checkout records and the results of the survey, the conclusions derived are: 1. Incorporating podcasting in reading instruction has a positive impact on students reading behaviors. 2. Incorporating podcasting in reading instruction sparks students curiosity and motivates them to learn. 3. Student checked out at libraries more often. 4. Incorporating podcasting in reading makes students love reading.

Abstract:
Children’s news media offers access points for students to learn about the complex and evolving world around them, and school libraries are spaces where students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to interact with media. Yet despite the potential of children’s news media, school libraries often become regulatory spaces where children are directed away from texts (both digital and printed) that are deemed inappropriate due to sophisticated content (Heins, 2007) or in some cases, are encouraged to read on their “level” (Kontovourki, 2012). This constructs children as vulnerable and in need of protection (Robinson, 2013). Instead, I seek to position the focal children as active, critical agents at the center of their own lives. In this article, I analyze conceptions of childhood innocence (James and Prout, 1997), arguing that both childhood and literacy are fluid and permeable constructions. I ask: What are the ways in which texts and literacy practices are censored in one elementary school library? To investigate this, I followed one school librarian, Deborah, and three first-grade students in their school library at City Partnership School as they navigated texts, learned about the world around them through multimedia platforms, and constructed their own identities as readers in a system with clear expectations for what a “readerly” identity looks like.

Abstract:
The development of school libraries established at schools providing elementary education in the 19th century is closely related to the development of this type of schools after 1774, when the General School Rules were published. For the first time, they referred to education as a political issue and declared the interest of the state in the education of all the population. In the 1820s, a decree of the court study committee ordered district school supervisors to inspect books in school libraries and gave them the right to decide whether a particular book fits into the school library. In 1869, a new school act cancelled the supervision of the Church over schools and transferred it to the state. First, the state supported school libraries by listing them among the teaching aids that should be available for every school. In addition, a decree of the Ministry of Cult and Education encouraged the establishment of school libraries where they were still missing. Subsequently (1875), however, the ministry ordered teachers to check new books acquired by school libraries, to inspect also all the other books already deposited in the libraries and to discard all of those that were unsuitable. Ten years later (1885), new inspection of all school libraries was ordered.

Abstract:
The Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 43 Year 2007 concerning Libraries states that schools are required to have school libraries based on the National Standards of Library (SNP). This condition forces every school to develop a library, even though the conditions are still far from the standard set. To realize the existence of library, each school uses various resources in its school to establish a school library. This study aims to explore the efforts of primary schools in Singaraja City to fulfill their obligations in providing library space. This study uses a qualitative approach based on critical social theory commonly used in the Cultural Studies approach. The data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews, involved observation and document study. Data analysis in this study follows Peter Berger's model with the following steps: conceptualization, conceptualization results, verification, and objectivation. The results show that the obligation to have a school library at the primary school level is not easy due to various obstacles. This gave rise to the ideology of permissivism or in Balinese it is called dadi dadi dogen. This ideology allows schools to use various types of spaces to become libraries, for example classrooms, teacher rooms, warehouses, UKS, and so on. Abstract:
The existence of a school library information system can improve the quality and speed of the service process for library users so that it can facilitate the teaching and learning process in the school environment. The purpose of this research is to find out the use of digital libraries can increase the reading interest of elementary school students. The method used in this research is Literature review. Literature review is a scientific study that focuses on one particular topic. The literature review will provide an overview of the development of a particular topic. Literature review will allow a researcher to identify a theory or method, develop a theory or method, identify gaps that occur between a theory and its relevance in the field / to a research result. The results of the study stated that with a digital library, students no longer need to bother bringing books to read or study, only by opening the digital library application, students can access all sources of information in the digital library. In the digital library, many things can be found, be it e-books, pictures, magazines, story books and so on that are already stored in the digital library. The conclusion is that the current use of digital libraries is very much needed in an effort to be effective in reading literacy so that it can increase student interest in reading. However, the weakness is that currently there are not many schools that have not utilized the applications used in making digital libraries so that access is still very little

London is a major international centre for study of and research into Chinese art. Four libraries - the British Library, the library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, the library of the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, and the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum - are perhaps the main providers of information on Chinese art, although information is also available from several museum libraries, from the library of Christie’s auction house, and from public and other libraries. A survey of users of information on Chinese art indicates that provision is generally satisfactory, although the degree of user satisfaction varies from one library to another. More effective networking between the key libraries would bring about significant improvements.

This study used the AASL School Libraries Count! data sets to examine school library program trends within the 2009–2012 time frame, and identify possible relationships between contributing factors across the four years and across the four geographic regions. Several statistical tests were applied to the coded AASL survey data sets longitudinally and by region: descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, chi-squared independence tests, hypothesis testing of differences in proportions, and analysis of variance. The data reveal a variegated picture of school library programs in terms of staffing, resources, and activities – from state to state, by region, and by school level. In general, high schools fared best relative to elementary and middle schools, and the West fared the worst relative to the other regions. The findings highlight the impact of school level, poverty status, and governmental spending decisions on school library program staffing, resources and activities. The school librarian’s activities also correlate with library resources and their usage.

Abstract:
This qualitative case study seeks to understand and describe, in depth, the different learning processes in which a nine-year old, Venezuelan girl (Victoria) engaged to reaffirm her identity as a language learner and become a legitimate member of a community of practice during the first six months in an Iowa City Elementary School. Data collection included observations in class and at home, field notes, interviews, oral and written artifacts and e-mails. Analysis was made through a constant comparison of the data to reflect on the potential categorizations of the artifacts considering mainly two theoretical constructs: “legitimate peripheral participation” (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and “collaborative relations of power” (Cummins, 1996). Results suggest that students engage more actively in activities, which are designed to construct meaning through social participation. Legitimate participation in school activities helped Victoria improve her English language ability and reaffirm her identity. The speed with which she learned English at school is mainly due to the solid community of practice she had the fortune to participate in and Mrs. Brown’s mediation. The more she interacted, the better she performed; and the better she performed, the more she interacted. This research offers alternative ways to understand Victoria’s experience as a language learner, the complexity of a second language learning process, and the fundamental role teachers need to perform to mediate in the students’ learning to reaffirm their identities. This study represents an exemplary reflection of what we, as classroom teachers, SL/foreign language teachers, should do in our classrooms if we really want to offer students real opportunities to learn the language and help them reaffirm their identity as language learners.

A school library that exists in all levels of schools is a facility that supports the process of productive learningfor thefuffillment of information needs especially literature and the information deriving from the teachers. This article is written in response to the problem encountered in school libraries particularly at the elementary school at Subdistrict of Minggir District of Sleman with poor facilities, limited collection and aquisition and management. These conditions will indirectly affect the utilization of the school library by the teachers at elementary schools. This writing is meant to help teachers at elementary schools to understand the meaning of the library within the school. Approach to the analysis is based on the theory of social construction introduced by Peter L. Berger mtd T. Luclcrnan. We can use the concept of meaning and rests on thefact that there are objective reality, symbolic reality, and subjective reality. It is emphasized that the objective reality would affect the return to a subjective reality through a process of internalization. Subjective reality is inseparable from the process of socialization. Subjective reality affects the externalization process at the end. This condition can be associated with the birth of understanding what has been and will be done by the teacher in an elementary school library in the symbolic reality. Finally, this study reveals that there are two typologies ofteachers; professional staffmembers and deserter.

Abstract:
This study examines the construct of reader preference along the lines of gender and social class. Data were collected through focused interviews and participant observation from one third-grade class in each of three elementary school libraries that served children from a range of ethnic and social class backgrounds. The study argues that children's expressions of preference are often enactments of what they believe it means to be categorically male or female, whereas their ways of relating to different genres of text, as well as how they choose to read, often enact the “habitus,” or material logic, of their social class. This analysis is complicated by three events in which the doing of gender or class by students is interrupted by stronger desires. The article concludes with a reconsideration of preference as a construct, and questions why educators might want to know what children like to read in the first place.

Abstract:
The expansion of digital technology presents both obstacles and opportunities, particularly for young people. Consequently, educational institutions have been developing digital literacy curriculums. Since digital literacy is not yet included in the national curriculum as a compulsory subject, private schools have constructed digital literacy programmes based on local resources. This study investigates how digital literacy practices are carried out in selected private elementary schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, based on ICT learning, an information and media literacy approach, educators' role, and learning points. The data were collected in interviews with: (1) principals, (2) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) teachers, (3) librarians and (4) classroom teachers because, according to previous research, they are the main actors of digital literacy in school. The structured interviews use research instruments derived from two earlier studies and are tailored to the study's needs. This study demonstrates that (a) the digital literacy approach is implemented mainly through an ICT learning and media literacy approach while the information literacy approach is undermined; and (b) principals, classroom teachers, and ICT teachers are the three actors who play the most important roles in digital literacy, while librarians play a minor one. The majority of digital literacy training takes place in computer laboratories, while training in classrooms and libraries is less frequent. The study recommends the school blend ICT learning, information literacy, and media literacy pedagogy more comprehensively, with the library serving as the primary locus. In parallel, school principals should encourage school librarians to collaborate with the computer and class teachers to enhance the inclusive digital literacy curriculum.

The school library is not yet a favorite place for elementary school students. Many factors have contributed to this, among other the types of books available, unreliable library time, non-permanent librarians, even the scorn of friends who think of reading in the library as behavior that pretending to diligent. Many factors have contributed to this, such as the types of books available, unreliable library time, non-permanent librarians, even the scorn of friends who think of reading in the library as pretending to be diligent and smart, which cause students to be reluctant to regularly visit the library. Hence, classroom teachers need to reaffirm the library functions and persuade students to visit and utilize facilities in the library. This article presents the evaluation results of students attitude after receiving information about the library described by the classroom teacher. The method used in this study was descriptive study, with fourth-grade students of an elementary primary school as the object, data collection techniques used questionnaires, and data analysis used a single tabulation based on quantitative data. The results showed that students had a better attitude toward school libraries, from the cognitive aspects were such as knowledge, trust, and assessment, and the affective as well as conative aspects. Therefore, it is expected that schools through the classroom teacher can intensively spread information about the function of school libraries, and improve library facilities and services to the students, so they are accustomed to using the library as a first step in forming the love-literacy generation.

Abstract:
One pedagogical approach to challenge a persistent misconception is to get students to test a conjecture whereby they are confronted with the misconception. A common misconception about a ‘direct linear relationship’ between area and perimeter is well-documented. In this study, Year 4-6 students were presented with a conjecture that a rectangle with a larger perimeter will always have a larger area. Eighty-two (82) students’ written responses from three elementary schools in Victoria, Australia were analyzed. The findings revealed that Year 4-6 students could find multiple examples to support the conjecture but they struggled to find counterexamples to refute the conjecture. The findings underscored the importance of developing elementary school students’ capacity to construct counterexamples and recognize that it is sufficient to offer one counterexample in refuting a conjecture about all cases. Implications for teaching practice to support investigating and testing a conjecture are discussed.

Abstract:
HVAC systems consumes 37 % of the electricity in educational buildings. Energy consumption varies depending on the ventilation strategy. School buildings have a responsibility of ensuring energy performance and maintenance of indoor environmental quality for its occupants. This study assesses the efficiency of the ventilation system in terms of the microbes present in the spaces. Microorganisms and particulate matters were sampled in classrooms, locker rooms, libraries in two high schools and an elementary school. Six bacterial species and seven fungal species were identified. The most abundant microorganisms were Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus sp., and Micrococcus sp. Elementary school, especially kindergarten, showed higher microbial concentration and particulate matter as a result of higher human activity. Microbial concentration was influenced by the types of room in the same building with the same ventilation system. Canonical correspondence plot (CCA) determined that gender and school type have significant effects. The presence of Bacillus sp., Aerococcus sp., Corynebacterium sp., and Penicillium sp. was significantly related to gender, while Staphylococcus sp. and Alternaria sp. were related to type of school. The presence of Aerococcus sp. and Micrococcus sp. depended on the distance from the vent location. Relatively lower number of Aerococcus sp. was detected when the distance between sampling site and vent was less than 2 m. Micrococcus sp. was generally detected when the distance was < 3.5 m. The distance from the door was not significant.

Abstract:
A review of: Todd, Ross J. “Student Learning Through Ohio School Libraries: A Summary of the Ohio Research Study.” Ohio Educational Library Media Association 15 Dec. 2003. Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA), 2004. 15 Nov. 2006 http://www.oelma.org/StudentLearning/documents/OELMAResearchStudy8page.pdf. Objective – This study explored links between school libraries and student learning outcomes that were defined in a multidimensional context, using data provided by the students themselves. The researchers examined learning outcomes that reached beyond the existing correlations of school library services and standardized test scores. Insight was provided into the interactions between students and school libraries that affect student learning. An overarching goal of the study was to establish ongoing dialogue to focus on evidence based practices that may lead to continuous improvement in school library services and to provide the basis for further research. Design – Web based survey. Subjects – Participants were 13,123 students in grades 3-12 and 879 faculty at 39 schools across the state. Setting – Ohio Public school libraries. Methods – Thirty-nine effective school libraries, staffed by credentialed school librarians, were chosen through a judgment sampling process, using criteria based on Ohio Guidelines for Effective School Library Media Programs. The guidelines are aligned to academic content standards, assessments, resources, and professional development. Two web based surveys were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data from students and faculty: The Impacts on Learning Survey, composed of Likert scale responses to 48 statements and an open-ended critical incident question for students. The Perceptions of Learning Impacts Survey was a similar survey for faculty. Survey questions were based on Dervin’s theory of information seeking that advances the idea of ‘helps’ as the constructive process of bridging gaps in information use that lead to new knowledge or making sense (sense-making) in relation to a perceived information need (Todd and Kuhlthau). The term ‘helps’ includes both inputs (help that the school library provides in engaging students in learning) and outputs (learning outcomes of academic achievement and active agency in the learning process). The survey statements included a combination of conclusions based on selections from school library research studies, and the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning from the American Association of School Librarians’ Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning. The two surveys were used to triangulate multiple sources of data to illustrate the “helps” provided by the school library to student learning. Students were also given the opportunity to describe “helps” in their own words in an open-ended critical incident question. Main results – The data showed that the selected effective school libraries were perceived as providing ‘helps’ in dynamic ways that appeared to have a transformative effect on student learning. School libraries and librarians were viewed as having an active role in the learning process. Of the students surveyed, 99.4 % believed that school libraries helped them become better learners. The results were grouped into seven blocks of ‘help’ concepts that frame the contributions of the school library and the school librarian to student learning (Table 1). The study noted that perceptions of the effect of school libraries are strongest for elementary students, and perceptions of the effect decrease as students move through middle and high school. Comments from students indicate that mastery of information skills that lead to independent learning may contribute to the perception that the library is not as strong a ‘help’ in later school years. In ranking the mean scores of the block concepts, the effective school library ranked strongest as a resource agent and technical agent, to support student research and projects with both print and non-print resources. The qualitative data further clarified student perceptions that the library contributed to individualized learning, knowledge construction, and academic achievement. Instructional interventions that benefited from contributions by the librarian included conducting research effectively; identifying key ideas; analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information; and developing personal conclusions. In comparing student and faculty data, there was consistency in the perception of value in the top three conceptual groups of “helps”: libraries as resource agents, as agents for information literacy development, and as agents for knowledge construction. Conclusion – The data analysis illustrated that school libraries were actively involved in student learning and were perceived as important factors in student learning and achievement by both students and faculty. Consistency throughout the sample showed perceptions of multiple effects of school libraries in facilitating student learning for building knowledge. Student comments and survey results showed that students perceived the library as providing strong support for reading for curriculum and informational needs and as less helpful with regard to individual reading for pleasure or personal pursuits. The study speculates that perhaps the emphasis on academics and test-oriented schooling may leave students little time to pursue independent reading interests during school hours. The study identified factors for effective school libraries: informational, transformational, and formational elements. These factors may be used as building blocks for shaping practices that help effective school libraries bring about student achievement. Informational: Resources, technological infrastructure, and reading resources. Transformational: Information literacy, technological literacy, and reading engagement. Formational: Knowledge creation, use, production, dissemination, values, and reading literacy. The visual model of the factors for effective practice and their relationship to student outcomes will be of particular help to practitioners. (Todd and Kuhlthau 23)

Abstract:
Background:Enjoyment and play during school lunchtime are correlated with children’s physical activity. Despite this, there is an absence of studies reporting children’s enjoyment of play during school lunchtime breaks. The purpose of this study was to examine the intraday and interday reliability of children’s enjoyment of school lunchtime play. Methods:Surveys used to assess children’s enjoyment of lunchtime play were distributed to and completed by 197 children (112 males, 85 females), aged 8–12 years attending an elementary school in Victoria, Australia. Children completed the surveys during class before lunch (expected enjoyment) and after lunch (actual enjoyment) for 5 days. The intra- and interday enjoyment of school lunchtime play reliability were determined using a weighted kappa. Results:Intraday kappa values ranged from fair (0.31) to substantial (0.75) within each of the 5 days (median kappa = 0.41). In comparison, “expected” (0.09–0.40; median 0.30) and “actual” (0.05–0.46; median 0.28) interday enjoyment of lunchtime play displayed low reliability. Conclusions:Children’s enjoyment of lunchtime play appears to be more consistent within days than across days. The findings suggest that assessment of children’s enjoyment of lunchtime play once on a single day would be representative of a particular day but not necessarily that particular school week.

This article details videodisc projects in elementary schools supported in part by the United States Department of Education. The development of private videodisc programs for elementary and secondary schools is also discussed. While the author feels that this is a promising technology, he considers it as still in an experimental stage. The Videodisc Interactive Microcomputer (VIM) project supported by the Center for Libraries and Educational Improvement included forty-five elementary schools in seventeen states. The best liked of the forty-five discs supplied to the schools was the “WHALES” disc developed by the National Geographic Society and the University of Nebraska. Developments in both hardware and software make it possible for the average school to purchase off-shelf operating educational programs. Pioneers in the commercial field have been Video Discovery and their bio-science discs, and Video Vision with their space discs. System Impact Incorporated of Washington, D.C. has just introduced a new comprehensive basic mathematics series, and the Society for Visual Education of Chicago, Illinois has introduced a social studies series. Videodisc technology holds great promise for educators at all levels.
