Abstract:
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) overcomes many of the limitations associated with conventional radiography, the technique historically regarded as the gold standard in imaging of osteoarthritis (OA). MRI allows visualization of changes and pathologies in joint tissues including cartilage and the menisci, the two tissue components responsible for the indirect radiographic marker of joint space narrowing, decreasing the length of time that must elapse before disease progression can be detected. Other elements of the joint can also be analysed simultaneously: a key development in the understanding of OA. This chapter focuses on the utility of MRI in observational studies and clinical trials, detailing the available MRI techniques and quantitative/qualitative measurements, and their correlation with tissue damage. The possible future directions of MRI in OA are also discussed, with a view to its potential utility in identifying disease-modifying interventions.

Abstract:
Voltage sensitive dye imaging (VSD) can be used to record neural activity in hundreds of locations in preparations ranging from mammalian cortex to invertebrate ganglia. Because fast VSDs respond to membrane potential changes with microsecond temporal resolution, these are better suited than calcium indicators for recording rapid neural signals. Here we describe methods for using a 464- element photodiode array and fast VSDs to record signals ranging from large scale network activity in brain slices and in vivo mammalian preparations, to action potentials in over 100 individual neurons in invertebrate ganglia.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates Plutarch’s On Flesh- Eating. This work, which contains two logoi, is traditionally taken as a highly rhetorical and ‘youthful’ piece which reflects Plutarch’s views on animal welfare and vegetarianism. This chapter argues that it investigates the ways in which one views another’s pain: it uses the torture of animals and our capacity to imagine this to interrogate questions about human society. On Flesh-Eating presents man as someone whose sensory organs and capacity for imagining another’s pain have been undermined by constant exposure to violence and inappropriate sights. Plutarch sets out to remedy this by forcing the reader to confront the distressing elements of animal consumption and, in so doing, to come to imagine the pain of the ultimate ‘other’.

Alexander-Floyd, Nikol G. Re-Imagining Black Women. NYU Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18574/nyu/9781479855858.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Re-Imagining Black Women dissects “post-politics”—the repertoire of dominant fantasies, frames, and narratives that hope for an afterlife beyond the social activism of the mid-twentieth century. This push for post-politics, such as post-feminism or post-racial thinking, serves as a form of race, gender, and class management that is uniquely suited for this neoliberal era. Alexander-Floyd centers black women as subjects, locating Moynihan’s black cultural pathology melodrama as the earliest basis for neoliberalism’s focus on self-regulation, solidifying patriarchal family formations, and the splitting of groups into virtuous victors who are worthy citizen subjects versus villainous, abject others in need of rehabilitation. Forging a unique methodology that fuses insights and approaches from political science, women’s studies, black studies, media studies, and most notably psychoanalysis, Re-Imagining Black Women provides a tour-de-force of black politics, exposing and addressing gender and other elements repressed or disavowed in the study of US race and politics. Each chapter traces the interplay of melodrama and liminality, examining political figures, such as Condoleezza Rice and Barack Obama and his My Brother’s Keeper initiative; cultural sites, such as The Help and Tyler Perry’s Madea; white male rape of black women and the social contract; and black women and the MeToo movement. This study helps to explain how some people were seduced by post-racial, post-feminist fantasies, exposing the primary ways in which they still operate. Re-Imagining Black Women also discusses post-politics in the COVID-19 era. It is a pioneering work that helps readers understand contemporary culture and politics and equips them to navigate turbulent political futures.

Kettler, Mark D. Circumscribed Mass: Fibroadenoma. Edited by Christoph I. Lee, Constance D. Lehman, and Lawrence W. Bassett. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190270261.003.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
A fibroadenoma is a benign fibroepithelial breast tumor arising from the terminal duct-lobular unit (TDLU), composed of epithelial and stromal elements. The overwhelming majority of fibroadenomas present as palpable or imaging-detected circumscribed masses showing sharp demarcation between the lesion and the adjacent breast tissue. Fibroadenomas are the most common benign breast tumor occurring in women, with a peak incidence in the third and fourth decades, but they can occur from childhood through the eight decade of life. This chapter, appearing in the section on asymmetry, mass, and distortion, reviews the key clinical and imaging features, differential diagnosis, and management recommendations for fibroadenomas.
