Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

AbstractScholarly work on Juvenal has focused on the poet's self-fashioning as an 'angry man'. This paper, on Satire 6, shifts the emphasis to the object of the invective, in this case the Roman matrona. In creating a character who allegedly represents the typical Roman married woman of his day, the poet constructs an anti-matrona who resembles to a large extent her polar opposite in Roman thinking—the meretrix. A major way in which this effect is achieved is via intertextual connections with Latin love elegy, and the paper offers a detailed discussion of several passages in which the wife is constructed as elegiac puella and her husband as elegiac lover.

Abstract:
Summary In the Aeneid, the recurrent themes of ‘construction’ and ‘destruction’ (the topic of the Latin final exam of 2020) can be connected to generic roles. Dido, founder of Carthage, is presented progressively in elegiac terms, as is suggested by a number of echoes of Sapphic love poetry; as a character, she is guided primarily by personal motives. Dido’s ‘elegiac role’ forebodes her own destruction and that of her city. Aeneas, on the other hand, needs to adhere to his epic role as founder of the new Trojan/Roman nation, in order to avert destruction and the repetition of Troy’s fate. When during his stay in Carthage he starts to show signs of transforming into an elegiac lover, the gods intervene and put him back onto the epic track: the public interest should take precedence over personal feelings. This opposition between elegiac Dido and epic Aeneas may grant insight into Vergil’s message for his contemporaries.

In the first episode, the focus will be on the narrator’s poetic inserts, and, in the second one, on prose narrative. We seek to identify and analyse some allusions to lyric-elegiac literary tradition in these episodes, to verify how their presence causes the parody of the models and, in this way, to see how this resource produces a metaliterary discussion. Furthermore, we intend to show that, more than a “mythomaniac narrator” (Conte, 1996), Encolpius presents himself as a literomaniac narrator, assuming various personae throughout the narrative (not only an epic persona, but also a lyric-elegiac one).

Abstract:
The article examines the peculiarities of mythological characters in the Latin poetry of the baroque period in Ukraine. This period contributed a lot to intercultural relations between Ukraine and Western Europe and gave a birth to the phenomenon of the baroque Ukrainian poetry, written in Latin language. In the present paper much research has been devoted to the poetic works of Theophan Prokopovych, Grygoriy Vyshnevsky and Ilarion Yaroshevytsky; their poetic texts are found in printed editions ("Elegia paraenetica", "Epinikion", "Elegia Alexii", "Comparatio vitae monasticae", "Descriptiuncula Kijowiae", "Possesoris horum librorum luctuosum vale") and manuscripts ("Iter laureatum", "Cupido seu amor alatus"). The study analyzes the poetry in various genres, such as panegyric, elegy, epigram, lyrical poem. Addressing to the ancient legacy was defined as the sufficient and necessary feature of the baroque style. The article suggests the idea that a poet gives a preference to one or another mythological character in his individual author's interpretation. The analysis of the poetic texts reveals the most productive mythological characters, which can be classified into the following categories: 1) art (Apollo with the Muses, the winged horse Pegasus); 2) martial arts (Mars); 3) celebrations (Bacchus, Hymenaeus); 4) love (Venus, Cupid, Cypride ); 5) natural phenomena (Aurora, Lucifer, Phosphorus, Titan, Zephyrus, Thetis). The research has demonstrated that contamination of the two worldviews was natural for the baroque poet. This contamination was embodied in the bizarre combination of Christian and ancient elements in their literary works. It was traced that Latin poets of the Ukrainian baroque completely followed the literary traditions of the classical theory of poetry, what was marked in the form of the poetic work and its content.

Abstract:
Abstract This article presents the debate between two visions regarding ways to confront the criminality. On the one hand, the vision that human beings rationally decide their behavior and choose their options freely when facing the contrasted values of crime and punishment. On the other hand, the idea that criminality may have roots in social and economic situations in which it is possible to act by correcting social anomalies and preventing crime. For the first of these visions, the penal sanction, the prison, represents exclusively the punishment; for the second, it is the path of rehabilitation and social reintegration. The article shows that, between these two alternatives, most Latin American countries have opted for the first during the last decades. Consequently, they have adopted “iron-fist” public policies, which emphasize the punishment instead of prevention and rehabilitation. The article seeks to demonstrate that this path has not yielded results in relation to the objective of dissuading delinquent behavior. Consequently, that policy must be modified.

In 1542, Frankfurt schoolmaster Jacobus Micyllus (1503–1558) composed an epigram in four elegiac couplets, entitled Inscriptio scholae Francofortensis. It pretends to be an inscription on the recently restored Barfüßerkloster, which was to house the school for the next three centuries. In the epigram, the school is depicted as a tranquil place of reflection and learning, in contrast to the wars raging outside the cloister walls. In this paper, the author will show how Micyllus places the Gymnasium Francofurtanum in the tradition of Plato’s Academy by alluding to the legendary inscription excluding all those ignorant of geometry from that institution. Micyllus modifies this idea by welcoming only those who worship the Greek and Latin muses. The Latin school thus becomes a retreat for those who wish to dedicate themselves fully to humanist education in Latin and Greek, sheltered from the turbulence and hostilities of the time.

During the troubled period of the Great Schism, the Hundred Years War, and the civil war in France, Jean Gerson (1363–1429), chancellor of the University of Paris, played an important part. However, his primary importance lies in the considerable corpus of writings that he left, rather than his role in political and ecclesiastical affairs. His theological writings are well known, and the literary aspects of his works have been pointed out, especially in relation to French humanism of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In particular, his Latin poems are important evidence of the cultural climate of these years and still survive in great number — we actually know of nearly six thousand verses. Unfortunately, there is currently no complete edition that satisfies modern critical criteria. In these circumstances, any critical work on these texts must begin with a study of the manuscripts.

Abstract: “Verses from Ivrea” (northern suburban town of Turin, Italy, near the Po waterway), an elegiac love poem, dates from the late eleventh century and is attributed to a certain Wido. It celebrates not the usual contemptus mundi of the era but rather worldly pleasures. The poem draws on a wealth of Latin classical sources, Ovid in particular, which leads the editor to view it as a precursor to the twelfth-century Renaissance. Kretschmer (hereafter K.), a Norwegian Classics professor, now based in Paris, publishes herewith his third major work, a book-length edition and study of this unusual and unique poetic text of 150 bisyllabic leonine distichs in elegiac meter. The poem was previously categorized as part of the vernacular pastourelle genre, but K. dispels that argument by listing its manifold divergent features ‐ “…metrical love poetry, descriptio puellae, poet’s pride, poetical expression of the economic and cultural growth of the eleventh century…” ‐ as a classical display that illustrates well the so-called long twelfth century (22).

Abstract:
Since In Memoriam first appeared in 1850, critics have been trying to come to terms with the unusual verse form of the poem and the nature of the desire it seems to encode. This essay roots these two critical preoccupations in the one formal unit-virtually unique in the history of English prosody-so distinctive to the poem that it bears its name: the eponymous In Memoriam stanza. Repeated endlessly, almost relentlessly, seven-hundred-and-twenty-five times, the stanza itself contains hermeneutic potential yet to be unpacked. For while Tennyson claims to have originated the verse form on his own, more than two centuries before him Ben Jonson had used the so-called In Memoriam stanza to similar effect: to express elegiac sentiments on the topic of doomed or "lost desire." To take Tennyson's claim to formal autonomy at face value is to dismiss centuries of poetic syntax built into the verse form that necessarily informs his poem. From the dissident elegiac desire of the Latin poet Propertius, to the elegiac longing of Jonson and Gray, to the yearning "Elegies" (as Tennyson called the individual sections of In Memoriam), to the lyrics of Oscar Wilde, this essay performs a radical genealogy of the stanza, showing how its formal devices work to incorporate (and disguise) its "vague desire" in specific "matter-moulded forms of speech."

Why does the Propertian speaker include a celebration of Rome,Elegy3.22, in his third book of love elegies? Why does he address himself to Tullus, a name that appeared the last time inElegy1.22, the closing poem of theMono-biblos?By paying attention to the nature of the elegy's topic rather than to the nature of the elegiac discourse, past and current Propertian scholarship fails to recognise the subtle and, at first sight, hidden links between the praise of Rome, the choice of the addressee, and the Propertian speaker's effort to re-locate himself in the realm of elegiac love and poetry inElegy3.22.Past scholarship has readElegy3.22 either as a palinode toElegy3.21, the Propertian speaker's decision to leave Rome, or as an indication that Cynthia has been substituted by Rome as another theme. The latter interpretation entailed a discussion about whetherElegy3.22 should be considered pro- or anti-Augustan or a sincere but unsuccessful elegiac tribute to Rome. All contributions offer hermeneutic readings that stem from a time before the critical tools of the ‘New Latin’ movement provided new possibilities for the re-contextuali ation of Roman poetry. Furthermore, both the past and the most recent interpretations ofElegy3.22 are theme-centred as they focus on the praise of Rome, and not on the nature of the Propertian speaker's discourse.

Abstract:
The article considers the literary and stylistic peculiarities of Neo-Latin poetry in seventeenth to eighteenth-century Ukraine. Latin poetry of that time is marked by variability and diversity of genres, for it logically continued the classical traditions and at the same time was influenced by the aesthetics and poetics of the Baroque due to the interlingual contacts. The Latin language was supposed to be the main criterion of the high style in a poetry. As for the genre peculiarities, Neo-Latin poetry tended to panegyrics as the literature "fashion" of that epoch, when the poets expressed their gratitude and admiration to the philanthropists, whereas the elegic poems were the part of poetic courses to illustrate the genre. It explains the freedom and fantazy which are present in panegyric poetry and classical canon which served for writing elegies. The period of the seventeenth to the eighteenth century was an absolutely disparate one in both the political and social life of Ukraine. Rapid development of events, dramatically changing realia and values shaped very special attitudes to life with the contemporaries, in particular with Kyiv intellectual poets who wrote a significant number of works in Latin. Analysis of these works enables to characterize the development of the Latin language in Ukraine and consider Neo-Latin poetry of Ukraine as a part of the Western European literary and language unity.

HOME GARDENS: A PATH WAY TOWARDS FOOD SOVEREIGNTY Home gardens, as traditional systems of production, represent one of the most important areas through which knowledge is generated and transmitted. Food sovereignty proposes the political exercise of self-determination and self-supply of produce that is healthy both for people and the environment. It comprises the freedom that collectives, families and individuals have to choose the food they eat and the way to produce and exchange it. Besides, it legitimizes the right to gain access to healthy food and to reject speculation-based neoliberal policies in this field. The reflection in this article is geared to review how the general characteristics of home gardens proposed by Latin America academics may represent a pathway toward food sovereignty in both rural areas and urban and sub-urban areas.

The author gathers and scrutinizes the cases in which Jan Kochanowski, the most prominent poet of the Polish Renaissance, mentions Naples or Campania, one of his destinations while travelling through Italy in 1555. One of the designations in question appears to be „Parthenopea lues” from his Latin elegy III 17, a periphrastic term for syphilis, a disastrous veneral disease which truly decimated the population of then Europeans. It’s mentioned as part of a long tirade against a woman who, according to the poet’s wishes, is going to pay high price for her wrongdoings, especially those against love. The ultimate punishment she will suffer, right before immersing herself in the abyss of Tartarus, will be, devastating for her health, „morbus gallicus”. The paper ponders on the right identification of the female protagonist of the elegy, taking into consideration the existing theories about it as well as comments on a peculiar name syphilis was given by the poet and the medical knowledge he shares with a reader.

AbstractFourteenth-century Italian humanists discussed the properties of tragedy while considering the value of Latin versus vernacular literature. Boccaccio was interested in these discussions because humanists were promoting classicizing tragic and epic literatures at the expense of vernacular writing. This article explores Boccaccio’s role in these debates by examining the tragic stories of the Decameron. It suggests that Boccaccio highlighted the virtues of his erotic tales by contrasting them to the tragic stories of day 4, a strategy inspired by Ovid’s elegiac poems. Boccaccio thus underscored the dignity of his low, Ovidian-inspired Decameron, and counterbalanced humanist fascination with high tragic-epic literatures.

Abstract:
The tenth poem of Propertius Book 4 is the most remarkable in a collection full of surprises for its readers, and appears to mark a significant departure from his previous work. If Propertius had never written his final book of poetry, we might characterize him on the basis of his earlier books as the quintessential Latin love elegist: he rejects not only a military career, but even the less demanding task of celebrating Augustus' victories, in favour of the love elegist's self-indulgent life of leisure: cf. e.g. Prop. 2.1.39–46. In the first poem of Book 4, however, Propertius announces what appears to be a wholly different poetic programme; in place of the erotic elegies of the previous books is a new ‘serious’ purpose: Propertius will sing about national, religious and antiquarian themes, as the ‘Roman Callimachus’ (Propertius 4.1a.63–4). However, as soon as the next poem, Propertius is commanded to return to his usual theme of obsessive elegiac love for one woman, a topic described as haec tua castra (‘this is your sphere of operations’, 4.1b.135). The poems which follow in Propertius 4 tend to strike a balance between antiquarian seriousness and elegiac frivolity. For example, in 4.4, Propertius relates the Vestal Virgin Tarpeia's betrayal of Rome, connecting several contemporary urban landmarks with the poem's heroine, but he remains true to his earlier colours by presenting Tarpeia as an elegiac lover who falls in love at first sight and betrays her city out of passion.

The Metamorphoses myth of the art-object which becomes a love-object mirrors the elegiac myth of love-object as art-object. The elegists represent the puella as both art and flesh. Pygmalion deconstructs the erotic realism of elegy and by its frankness about the power of the male artist discloses elegy's operations. It tells us how to read the puella — as a work of art; and the lover — as an artist obsessed with his own creation. Pygmalion reflects and exposes the self-absorption of elegy, the heroization of the lover, and the painted nature of the woman presented in eroto-elegiac texts, that is, the way in which she is to be seen as an art-object.

Abstract:
