The most time consuming and capital intensive portion in the assembly of power electronic devices is the test system. A comprehensive test system including functional and stress screening technologies can significantly increase assembly times and more than double the capital investment required in a new assembly line. The primary purpose of the test system is to screen components for early life failures and to verify proper assembly. Determination of key performance characteristics and the resultant test system are developed during the product design phase and are seldom revised after the product has been released to manufacturing. This thesis explores best practices in testing methods and develops new methods to analyze test system performance. Both efforts were conducted in an effort to optimize existing test regimes. Upon completion of the above analyses the existing test sequence was reduced by 50%. This was primarily due to a discovery in the Burn In test cycle which indicated that failures correlated strongly with the on/off cycles inherent in the test sequence. A new test cycle was proposed to accommodate this finding and test results verified the initial hypothesis. Additionally, the summary of best practices identified new forms of product testing including Highly Accelerated Stress Testing (HAST), moving additional product testing into the development phase consequently reducing testing requirements during assembly.

This thesis provides insight into methods for data analysis of testing procedures to optimize the overall testing times within the electronics manufacturing industry. By analyzing each test regime within the manufacturing sequence individually, with the goal of overall test time reduction, better test system optimization may occur. Specifically, within Burn In testing it was found that failure rates were heavily dependent upon the device on/off cycle. Once discovered new test cycles were proposed to reduce overall test times by 50%. Once implemented such new test cycles increased early failure capture as expected. In addition, industry benchmarking studies showed new forms of testing such as Highly Accelerated Stress Testing (HAST) are pushing the product testing earlier into the product life cycle where in-process tests such as Burn In may be reduced. In the case of HAST testing, the tests are being conducted in the design phase reducing more costly Burn In testing in the production phase.

Lind, Sofia. "Adaptation of eco-design methods for SMEs in India : Experiences from the electronics industry." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Water and Environmental Studies, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-9195.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis presents guidelines for how eco-design methods can be adapted to facilitate the introduction of ecologically responsible manufacturing in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Indian electronics industry. It also investigates the major opportunities and obstacles for eco-design to become a natural part of product design. This is urgent both from environmental and economic perspectives since the SMEs pollute a lot in proportion to their share of the total industrial production, and at the same time they are vulnerable for the increasing environmental demands on product design. The European Union recently introduced their directive on the Restriction of the Use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) which bans certain hazardous chemicals in electric and electronic device. For many producers that supply to the European market this was a wake up clock to start thinking about environmental aspects related to production.

The study was carried out as an interview and questionnaire study at three SMEs in the electronics industry. Additional interviews were held with informants in different organisations. It was concluded that for SMEs in the Indian electronics industry qualitative and semi-quantitative eco-design methods should be chosen before quantitative methods. Eco-design methods should resemble traditional methods that are already used in the companies. For the product developers to be able to work with eco-design more education and other solutions are needed to raise the environmental knowledge. Support and commitment from top management is also imperative. Methods should be developed to encourage the establishment of multi functional teams and early integration of environmental aspects in design projects.

The external demands on environmentally responsible manufacturing are expected to increase in the future. This will most likely have a positive influence on the environmental awareness in the industry, just as the RoHS directive has had. However, there are still economic and technical barriers that need to be bridged for SMEs in India to be able to work with eco-design. More cooperation and communication between academics, policy makers and the industry is needed to make it happen.

Abstract:
Required illumination levels in an electronics manufacturing facility were studied in order to provide feedback for architects and engineers. The study was carried out for the production floor of an electronics company in Ankara. The space considered was a Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) and Surface Mount Device (SMD) production department. The selected area was subdivided into different areas according to required illumination levels for each year. These levels were determined according to the specific work types over the total area according to each individual department. Data compiled by the field survey was analyzed and evaluated for investigating the relation of the potential effectiveness of the lighting systems regarding time, together with illumination levels needed for specific work areas. Changes in the sizes of areas needing various illuminance levels over past years were analyzed. It was found that there had been a decrease in the total required illumination levels.

Lim, Cheng Hwa. "Determinants of technological innovation : an exploratory study of the Asia-Pacific rim electronics manufacturing industry." Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 1997. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=26635.

Full text
Abstract:
The rapid progress of the Asia-Pacific rim countries during the past three decades has attracted world-wide attention, especially in the field of technological innovation. By the mid 1980's, researchers had acknowledged that the Asia-Pacific rim region had redefined the global balance of competition while at the same time, the western nations were suffering a decline in world market share. The perspective of the Asia-Pacific rim thinking tends to gravitate towards an endogenous model, where factors are more amenable to the influence of the organisation. An investigation by the World Bank on East Asia (including Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong) has uncovered emphatic evidence that the three dimensions propounded by Ohmae's model of people, finance and assets have been instrumental in enabling these economies "to acquire and master technology".This research explores the philosophy and strategic thinking of the Asia-Pacific rim electronics manufacturing industry with respect to the determinants of technological innovation. The study is divided into three major phases. The initial phase examines the respective strands of literature pertaining to the strategic issues of technological innovation. Special attention has been focused on the functional utilisation of people, finance and assets within the perspective of the Asia-Pacific rim electronics industry, leading to a broad-based framework for the study. Phase two is comprised of two main activities: the first involves exploratory interviews with four notable electronics companies and the second has entailed the gathering of data from 111 companies within the five Asia-Pacific rim countries (Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong) operating in Singapore and the United Kingdom, by means of a mailed questionnaire survey. Phase three involves qualitative as well as quantitative analyses where statistical methods such as one-way ANOVA, Chi-square test and t-tests have been undertaken to verify the data gathered from the primary research. The findings have uncovered that there are several determinants that are associated with the high rate of successful technological innovation in the sampled companies. For the people's dimension, there has been a high emphasis on training, resulting in a "nurtured" model of a worker, where numerous process innovations have been initiated by trained shop-floor technicians and engineers. At group working levels, various discussion groups (such as quality control circles and productivity discussion groups) have given rise to a collective learning process where shared knowledge enabled new products and processes to be innovated more rapidly than in the conventional departmentalised models. Other aspects of group dynamics has been the continuity (or smooth transition of innovative ideas) and good communications between functional groups thus acceleratingtechnological innovation. For the assets' dimension, the strategic foci have been shifted toautomation, flexible manufacturing process and increasing usage of information technology (including both computer hardware and software) so that new products can be brought to the market faster through the intelligent deployment of such assets and know-how. Finally, funds were found to have been allocated to expedite innovation through investment in R & D and staff training.

Park, Gi-Han. "Foreign manufacturing investment in the European Union : the case of the Korean consumer electronics industry." Thesis, University of Manchester, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.629570.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the nature of foreign manufacturing investment of the Korean electronics industry in the European Union (EU). Although traditional theories on foreign direct investment provide a stringent analytical framework for understanding the rise of third world Transnational Corporations (TNCs) in general, they fail to explain the distinctive nature and defining characteristics of the dynamic process of the internationalisation of Korean electronics firms in developed country markets. As a consequence, this study is an attempt at providing a conceptual framework that helps explain the main forces that underpin the spatial dispersion of two of Korea's leading electronics firms - Samsung and Goldstar. Based on the internationalisation history of two these firms, this study states as its goals: i) to find out the determinants of the internationalisation process; and ii) to identify the nature of the process and its typical pattern. Drawing on a theoretical framework initially developed by Knickerbocker (1973), this study examines the systematic determinants of the internationalisation in industrialised markets by Samsung and Goldstar. In particular, it is shown that although these two firms are dominant players in the Korean market, they exhibit a 'follow the leader' pattern of internationalisation. More importantly, the study integrates into the internationalisation process such key concepts as Vernon's (1979) product life cycle theory, economies of scale and scope, value chain analysis and Gereffi's (1994) formulation of global commodity chains. Furthermore, the phenomenon of 'reverse investment' involving investment in developed country markets by firms from less developed countries is discussed within the conceptual framework of the internationalisation process. The study finds that four key factors affect Samsung's and Goldstar's internationalisation pattern. Among the major determinants of the process are internal capabilities or experience, threats to market security, and market opportunities. Along with these determinants, government policy has been found to be an important catalyst for Korean firms' internationalisation. It was also established that while the firms' growth ambitions are not a primary force for their internationalisation into industrialised markets, they do have some influence on the process.

Full text
Abstract:
Complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuits (ICs) are the dominant technology in the semiconductor industry. Meeting delivery date is important to ensure customer satisfaction and maintain momentum between manufacturing divisions. Two major concerns are to produce the right quantity of ICs in the expected period of time. Yield and cycle time are two critical parameters used to assess process performance. The main objectives of this work were to obtain reliable forecasts of yields and cycle times and to monitor the process for detection of upsets. We explored the use of time series models such as ARIMA, transfer function and intervention models. A simultaneous outlier treatment and forecasting strategy was developed which combined the joint estimation of model parameters and outlier effects procedure with some new control charts. This method is particularly suited for highly correlated processes that are frequently subjected to large outliers. Choice of time basis was an important issue in this work (i.e., week of emergence from or entrance to the process). For ARIMA modeling, cycle time series were found to follow a highly correlated AR(1) process whereas yield series were just white noise. Five-step ahead ARIMA forecasts were often inaccurate due to the presence of frequent and large outliers. One step-ahead ARIMA forecasts were quite satisfactory. Transfer function models relating yield data to the process capacity data were built. Transfer function models for overall process cycle times were constructed using as inputs cycle times for various stages in the process. Five step-ahead forecasts were highly improved using these transfer functions. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
Malaysia has experienced robust economic growth since 1986. The manufacturing sector has been the main driving force behind this sustained and impressive performance. One success story is that of the electronics and electrical industry in Malaysia between 1986 and 1995, and this thesis is an exploration of the firms involved in the gains that were achieved in the sector during that period. This period is also significant because an Industry Master Plan had been introduced by the Malaysian Government to promote growth and structural change in the manufacturing sector. Using the proposed model, this research explored the relationship between Technology Strategy (TS) and Technology Management (TM) and firm performance, the influence of the type and size of firm and the other background variables on the acquisition of successful factors. Strategic technology management (STM) approach, which places technology in a strategic context, emerged in the late eighties in response to failure of more traditional techniques for exploiting technology. STM in this study included aspects of both technology strategy (content) and technology management (process). Many studies in strategic management research have investigated the relationship between technology strategy, technology management and firm performance, but largely from a western viewpoint. This study addresses this gap in the literature and focuses on a newly developing country outside the western block namely, Malaysia. A survey instrument, developed from Strategic Technology Management (STM) literature, was dispatched to the Chief Executive Officers and senior management in 101 high-tech E&E firms. Statistical tools were used to perform Factor and Regression analysis on the variables representing various dimensions. The results were analysed in such a way as to identify TS and TM factors associated with success within this industry at that time. The results demonstrated that the factors of key positioning and strategic R&D were linked to performance, while the factors of technology leadership, up-to-date plants and facilities, technology consciousness, formal planning and external technology acquisition were not. The firms that were more likely to acquire the former factors were those that formed part of a multinational corporation and those involved in joint ventures. Foreign and locally-owned companies were less likely to acquire the factors associated with success within this industry at that time. This has profound implications both for practice within firms and for attempts to facilitate economic success by those in government.

Korzeniewski, Thomas. "Examining the capability of lean and agile manufacturing techniques to address the needs of wind turbine manufacturers." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2015. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3839/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last few decades the wind power industry has grown very rapidly, and dozens of wind turbine manufacturers now operate all over the globe. Worldwide, installed capacity has increased tenfold in the last ten years, and the average rated power of the wind turbines available on the market has quadrupled in the same period (BWE 2010). However, in recent times wind turbine manufacturers have struggled to achieve profitable value performance, typically including wind turbine engineering, production, project management, logistics, installation, and commissioning (Knight 2012; McKenna 2012; Quilter 2012). The wind energy industry is customer-driven and regulated by local laws and guidelines. Both have a strong influence on the technology of wind turbines. Wind turbine manufacturers attempt to provide wind turbines that fit the specific requirements of each market or customer exactly. This regularly leads to a high variety of products, which are designed to fit many different market and customer demands. Furthermore, in times of overcapacity, markets demand that product manufacturers are more responsive and provide short and reliable lead times for customer-specific products (Albrecht 1999). The wind turbine market currently faces these challenges (Knight 2012; McKenna 2012; Quilter 2012). In such market environments, an excellent strategy planning with innovative elements, e.g. in product development, manufacturing procedures, the supply chain or the sales channels is inevitably a key factor for companies looking to maintain and/or improve their competitive position and profit outlooks (Albrecht 1999). The overall goal of this research is to investigate whether lean or agile manufacturing techniques can help manufacturers respond to these challenges. In particular, to evaluate whether lean or agile manufacturing techniques exist that have the capability to improve the value performance of wind turbine manufacturers and simultaneously enable sufficient product variety, as demanded by the different markets. The evaluation of the identified manufacturing strategies, concepts and methods resulted in Mass Customization being chosen as most suitable for wind turbines, due to its capabilities for managing a large number of product variants and a reduction of inventory. Finally, the manufacturing concept Mass Customization was implemented in a single case study at a wind turbine manufacturer, in order to investigate the physical and organizational impacts caused by the implementation. The research showed that there are lean and agile manufacturing techniques that address the needs of wind turbine manufacturers. The research further showed that the implementation of Mass Customization had a significant impact on the customer order process of a wind turbine manufacturer. Besides certain product preparations, a timely and comprehensive communication concept was required. The effects of both proper and poor project measures became evident in the case study. In summary, the research proved that Mass Customization has the capability to create corporate-wide and seamless communication on the product and customer order process at a wind turbine manufacturer, which can create the basis for an improved value performance.

This research aims at proposing and testing a method for the assessment of the alignment between competitive criteria and Autonomation practices, using theoretical and empirical basis. In order to create a heuristic situation and to apply the proposed method, a case study was conducted at a company that manufactures high-tech electronic equipment. The comprehension of the constructs that represent the application of Autonomation is supported by the theoretical review of concepts involving Autonomation, its impact on the production system and the interaction with the competitiveness at the enterprise?s level. The elements that influence each construct in the production process are identified through a focus group. The indicators found were weighed and measured, allowing the identification and quantification of gaps. The results are analyzed and discussed from the viewpoint of Industrial Engineering, proposing a plan of actions and implications for the improvement of the assessed process. This thesis contributes to the construction and development of a model representing the relationships among constructs, competitive criteria, and factors of the application of Autonomation. It is considered that the proposed method approximates the operational approaches to strategic settings, avoiding isolated and inefficient initiatives in manufacturing. Thus, it can be seen as a managerial tool, which can be useful for supporting the achievement of a pre-established manufacturing strategy.

In the electronics industry the companies owners of brands ( OEM ) are hiring outside manufacturing service providers ( EMS ) , and transfer to them major portions of their production. The EMSs have contributed to the OEMs in activities such as supply of components, engineering, manufacturing and distribution services. With the growth of this practice, the EMSs accumulate ever more capacity as providers of highly specialized commoditized electronic products, reducing costs and sharing risks across the electronic industry. The objective of this research was to scale the perception among EMSs, about the attributes of trust, mutuality and leadership, governance mechanisms as complementary to contract manufacturing in the consumer electronics industry considering the contributions of Ménard (2004) for the development of hybrid modes of governance. A field survey was carried out, being interviewed companies providing contract manufacturing headquartered in São Paulo. The analyzes show that allowed transactions providing electronic manufacturing are coordinated by complementary mechanisms to contracts through a governance model multiple hybrid formed by trust, mutuality and leadership.

Geloğullari, Cumhur Alper. "Group-scheduling problems in electronics manufacturing." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/28759.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the "multi-machine carryover sequence dependent group-scheduling problem with anticipatory setups," which arises in the printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing. Typically, in PCB manufacturing different board types requiring similar components are grouped together to reduce setup times and increase throughput. The challenge is to determine the sequence of board groups as well as the sequence of individual board types within each group. The two separate objectives considered are minimizing the makespan and minimizing the mean flow time. In order to quickly solve the problem with each of the two objectives, highly effective metasearch heuristic algorithms based on the concept known as tabu search are developed. Advanced features of tabu search, such as the long-term memory function in order to intensify/diversify the search and variable tabu-list sizes, are utilized in the proposed heuristics. In the absence of knowing the actual optimal solutions, another important challenge is to assess the quality of the solutions identified by the proposed metaheuristics. For that purpose, methods that identify strong lower bounds both on the optimal makespan and the optimal mean flow time are proposed. The quality of a heuristic solution is then quantified as its percentage deviation from the lower bound. Based on the minimum possible setup times, this dissertation develops a lower bounding procedure, called procedure Minsetup, that is capable of identifying tight lower bounds. Even tighter lower bounds are identified using a mathematical programming decomposition approach. Novel mathematical programming formulations are developed and a branch-and-price (B&P) algorithm is proposed and implemented. A Dantzig-Wolfe reformulation of the problem that enables applying a column generation algorithm to solve the linear programming relaxation of the master problem is presented. Single-machine subproblems are designed to identify new columns if and when necessary. To enhance the efficiency of the algorithm, approximation algorithms are developed to solve the subproblems. Effective branching rules partition the solution space of the problem at a node where the solution is fractional. In order to alleviate the slow convergence of the column generation process at each node, a stabilizing technique is developed. Finally, several implementation issues such as constructing a feasible initial master problem, column management, and search strategy, are addressed. The results of a carefully designed computational experiment for both low-mix high-volume and high-mix low-volume production environments confirm the high performance of tabu search algorithms in identifying extremely good quality solutions with respect to the proposed lower bounds.

The electronic manufacturing industries in Taiwan are mainly OEM (Original Equipment Manufactures) and ODM (Original Design Manufactures). Since the major international customers push hard for cost down and precise delivery, it will be a must to implement VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) into the upstream supplier, control the costs and avoiding unnecessary stock & risk of shortage. As most of the components are customized, some specific and unique matters need to be take into consideration when implemented VMI. Base on paper study & experiences, this research summarizing the factors which will affect electronic manufacturing industries' introduced VMI into 4 categories (including 87 items) as item categories, management mechanism, laws & regulations and information technology according to 4 composition factors which are industry uniqueness, internal environment, external environment and assistance tools. Then use the Cause and Effect Diagram to analyze relationship between the efficiency of VMI introduction and the factors mentioned above, and finally summarized it into 12 models. In the end, the ways of VMI introduction will be divided into 9 steps, with a specific case as an example to explain how to use these reference models and introduction steps efficiently.

Since 2012, the German government approved the “High-Tech Strategy 2020’” action plan, including ”Industry 4.0” in its top 10 future projects. More and more research is exploring the industry. 4.0 and its new technologies. Recently, 3D printers, IoT, AI, smart manufacturing and other new terms have been discussed. However, does Industry 4.0 really changed our manufacturing industry? Differ from other researches, which study from the technical aspects. In this study, it is mainly discussing on the appearent of Industry 4.0.If does, what are the effects to Taiwan’s major industries – the electronics manufacturing industry (electronic components manufacturing, automation equipment, electronic test&measurement instruments and semiconductor) and how they decide their new business strategy. In this study, using the DuPont analysis as an financial indicators .to revert the resource allocation of the top companies in the electronics manufacturing industry. Additionally, using thed factor and cluster analysis todiscriminate which companies have been using the same operating strategy. These will help to divide into different strategic group and study the competitive advantages of each group. Mean while, the timeline was deived into two periods, firstly is from 2010 to 2013 and secondly is from 2014 to 2017. The impact of Industry 4.0 was identified by examining and comparing the strategic groups ofthese companies in these two periods. This study provide a strong evidence that the competitive environment of the electronics manufacturing industries has changed during the period of Industry 4.0. The appication of Industry 4.0 had revert the traditional strategies such as focusing mainly on sales capabilities, but , production capacity. Companies that invest more resources into fixed assets, that is, companies that can make their factories' production equipment more efficient through digitalization, networking and automation can get more benefits and open up gaps with competitors.

This study discovered that because the electronics manufacturing industry has faced global competitions, all Taiwan’s electronics manufacturers have been impacted, so as to cause the price competition with each other. With facing the saturation condition of clients for Taiwan’s domestic EMS providers, the virulent price competition among Taiwan’s electronics manufacturing industries, and the orders controlled by clients completely, they have resulted in the decrease of gross profit margin; therefore impacted on companies’ profit-making. The main difference between EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services) providers, Taiwan’s OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) manufacturers in early days is that in addition to provide their clients with OEM services, EMS providers has also provided the peripheral services such as product development, logistics management, transportation, product maintenance and materials management to their clients. Most traditional OEM and ODM manufacturers are passively providing manufacturing services according to clients’ demands; in addition, since their service contents were simple assembly OEM, thus they had many competitors and highly replaceable. However, EMS providers are intending to be the virtual factories for their clients with providing flexible and elastic management services. In addition to inspect various key challenges and transformation that faced by EMS industries and their operating patterns; marketing strategy of overseas exhibition, development of European and Japanese clients, and small amount of customized manufacturing, this study also inspected how Taiwan’s EMS providers can look for the niche market from the Industry 4.0 advocate of global countries, in order to retake the market domination with their own advantages. This study thought that LH company’s future transformation strategy is to integrate the production manufacturing systems, transform from the production manufacturing into the manufacturing service, make use of the integration with the production information, material management and shipment information, change the production pattern into the provision of real-time production information service for clients, and make the production with the optimal process management and flexible production to shorten the time to market for their clients; in addition, through building the cross-industry alliance with clients to increase the interaction to support real-time service operation, so as to improve the key compatibility and clients’ trust

Owing to the characteristics of low technique threshold, high labor demand and huge fluctuation of market demand, the low efficiency of human resources allocation for the Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) industry is often induced with changing economic climate. Previous research rarely addressed the policy of human resources, and mostly developed production planning for only a single period. This causes the weakness of a low reaction to the variation of the market. Thus, our study proposes an aggregate production planning model as a better solution for EMS. Under satisfying the following conditions: material supply constraints, raw material prices, capacity limitation of each plant and the lead time of production and transportation into consideration, the model proposed contains many issues regarding human resource issues which includes labor hiring, discharge, training and cross-department labor transfer. We also develop a method to solve the model in order to figure out the accurate HR demand of every production period and the needed amount of backup HR. Because the model proposed is the NP-Complete problem in this study, the distributed and parallel computing method is exploited. To speed up the convergence of the solving procedure, both the upper and lower bounds for each solution scheme are found. There are two parts of Design of Experiments (DOE) as well as results analysis: For each part of the experiments, the levels of demand are arranged in the order of “rush- off” or “off- rush” to simulate multi- periods order variation. First, a small scale model is built to clarify the accuracy of our model and the feasibility of our solving procedure (distributed and parallel computing). According to the results, both distributed and parallel computing and single-machine computing generate the same optimal solution, but the former takes only one-tenth of the time to obtain the solution compared to the latter. In the final part, we design a large scale model in order to illustrate the advantage and the feasibility of distributed and parallel computing. The results show that distributed and parallel computing can obtain the approximate optimal solution in 11 hours, while it takes more than 80 hours for single machine computing. As a conclusion of this research, aggregate production planning not only effectively responds to t high variation of demand for the EMS industry, but also decreases the production cost. In addition, compared to other methods in the literature, distributed and parallel computing can approximate the optimal HR and order allocation much faster.

Owing to the high growth rate and revenue of global PC market, Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) enterprises in PC related (Notebook and Desktop) products become the major players in electronics manufacturing downstream industry in Taiwan. However, due to the demand to continue the growth, those main large EMS enterprises need not only to proceed successive interior investment, but also attempt to begin exterior growth strategies such as Merger and Acquisition(M&A), Joint Venture(JV) or strategy alliance. The purpose is for them to enlarge the gap among competitors, which the “economics scale” are formed and became a barrier for small and middle enterprises (SME). Those large EMS enterprises cross the border and enter the field of non-PC related products, and aggressively build up a vertical integration of the upstream supply chain. Therefore, superior enterprises which belong to the industry of non-PC related singular products, or SME supply chains that have business relations with first tier brand companies will be the target partner for large EMS in terms of M&A, JV or strategy alliance. We implement five force model and diamond model to analyze the development of electronics manufacturing downstream industry in Taiwan, and to discuss the strategy of growth towards those enterprises. Besides, we also probe into SME’s pressure while facing customers’ requests, intense industrial competition and aggressive potential competitors such as large EMS. Based on the above case study, we then adopt the corresponding policies. We believe that with limited resources, SME have failed to sustain high growth in order to meet customers’ demands. Under the circumstance, M&A and JV are maybe the best solution for SME. In other words, the successive “reinvestment risk” derives from “high growth” turns out to be one of the key factors to force SME executives for a more detailed consideration about cooperating with large EMS. We also found conformity with the development strategies of Taiwan electronics manufacturing downstream industry, and the result of our five-force analysis and diamond model analysis. In addition, due to the fact that Taiwan electronics manufacturing downstream industry have formed a highly entry barrier of “industry cluster”, the development of collectivization would deepen its characteristics. In this case, the global electronics manufacturing business could be mastered by most Taiwanese businessmen and become a positive encouragement for Taiwan electronics manufacturing downstream industry.

Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) is a method of operational mode for inventory management in the environment of supply chain management. In essence, it is a concept for integrating unilateral supply chain inventory management issues into a single inventory management problem. Based on customers’ actual or forecasted demands and inventory levels inventory replenishment solutions can be obtained through VMI. Suppliers can learn sales information from customers’ demands messages and perform more effective plans for rapid responses to market changes and customer needs. In recent years, many companies have been integrating the resources of whole supply chain pipelines to form VMI supply chain strategic alliances between enterprises in order to reduce inventory costs and risks. To face today''s low-profit era in electronic manufacturing industry, companies hope to cooperate with its partners to implement VMI to reduce inventory costs, avoid unnecessary stockpiles and material shortages to increase supply flexibility and maintain companys’ competitive advantage. This study is to investigate why Taiwan''s IT industries import VMI management mechanisms? What related considerations are considered? What are the difficulties and solutions in the process of initiating and implementing VMI mechanism? And finally, what benefits can be brought up to enterprise for using VMI? By the case study, we have shown that VMI indeed contents many significant properties that can increase operating benefits, reduce inventory costs and effectively improve company’s inventory management system.

This study aims to extend the discussion on the strategic solution of business transformation. Taiwan’s electronics manufacturing is in a dilemma due to fierce competition and challenge of low-margin. Under the impact of red supply chain and GDP value less than 1%, how can we respond or make a breakthrough to survive? And how can we enhance the business performance and growth enterprises? We investigate the cause of ODM/OEM transformation, decision process and strategy, expecting to find a transformation strategy and action plan for this case study of company A. By conducting interview with experienced executives from multiple cases and exploring the issues on transformation strategy, business model, strategic action, internal and external resource integration. This study discovers the specific strategic action including the coexistence between manufacturers and brand owners to avoid conflicts of interest, creating the product and technical advantage, enhancing the trust and dependency relying on manufacturers, and integration through strategic alliance or M&A. Finally, the finding of transformation is about the choice of resource pathway for this case of company A. It is easier to lead to success by borrowing resources from somewhere else through contractual relationships or alliance. The core message is to learn to determine which path is best for company A or anyone involved in the growth of their company. Key words: Business Transformation, ODM/OEM Transformation, Integration.

Abstract:
The present study is an attempt to analyze the impact of changing policy regime during the liberalization era on the behaviour of 81 sample firms in Indian electronics industry in terms of factor productivities. We categorise a period of 12 years (1993-2004) as the two phases of liberalisation: - Period/ Phase 1: 1993-1998 and Period/ Phase 2: 1999-2004. The 81 sample firms are segregated into four primary sub-sectors of electronics industry based on their use pattern: communication equipments, computer hardware, consumer electronics and other electronics. The objective is to trace the growth of output in the four sub-sectors in Indian electronics industry over two phases of liberalisation and to determine the relative contributions of Input Growth (IG) and Total Factor Productivity Growth (TFPG) to Output Growth (OG). Further, the study focuses on determining the relative contributions of Technological Progress (TP) and Technical Efficiency Change (TEC) to TFPG and establishes the influence of firm specific managerial decision making and management efficiency variables on TEC and TP. The methodology follows a three-step approach in order to achieve the above objectives. The first step is to determine a potential stochastic production function using stochastic frontier production function model and measure firm-wise technical inefficiency levels. The second step is to measure the growth of TFP over two phases and to derive the components TEC and TP. The third step measures the influence of management decision variables on TEC and TP using a frontier approach model on a panel data. The contribution of labour to output was found to be higher than the contribution of capital in all four sub-sectors. However, capital contribution improved in phase 2 relative to phase 1 for computer hardware and other electronics sub-sectors. Computer hardware was the only sub-sector that experienced an improvement in returns to scale from constant returns to scale in phase 1 to increasing returns to scale in phase 2 of liberalisation. The Technological Progress (TP) and Technical Efficiency Change (TEC) that contributed to TFPG exhibited a contrasting relationship for all the four sub-sectors in the electronics industry: TEC declined when there was high TP while it improved when there was a decline in TP. This could be because Indian electronics firms generally focus on either technology imports/ develop indigenous technology to achieve TP or to assimilate the imported/ indigenous technology for better use. The lag in assimilation of imported/ developed technology could be a reason for the negative relation between TEC and TP. The communication equipment sub-sector had a balanced growth in terms of TEC and TP among the four sub-sectors. The computer hardware and the other electronics sub-sectors were worse performers in terms of TEC in period 2 relative to period 1 and so had been the electronics industry as a whole. The computer hardware sub-sector had the highest average OG in period 2 relative to period 1 among all the sub-sectors due to relatively high contribution of IG. Other electronics sub-sector had the highest average TP that compensated for the negative average TEC. On an average, percentage contribution of TP to TFPG was high for the electronics industry and its sub-sectors in period 2 relative to period 1. This is an indication that the sub-sectors of Indian electronics industry have strived and achieved steady technological progress in the period of economic liberalisation to cope with the intensifying competition internally as well as externally. The sample firms in the electronics industry were in favour of towards external acquisition of sophisticated technology, which explains the relatively high contribution of TP to the TFPG of the industry. However, this was not followed up with adequate in-house R&D in order to develop indigenous technology or to absorb imported technology as a result of which TEC for the sub-sectors and the whole industry suffered. Growth in Operating Margin (OMG) and Growth in Returns on Capital Employed (ROCEG) generate additional revenue that could be ploughed back into the firm for improvement of its existing indigenous technology or absorption of imported technology thereby leading to improvement in TE and TP. The positive influence of OMG as well as ROCEG on TEC and TP for all the sub-sectors is an indication of efficient management in these sub-sectors in utilizing assets and profits to generate earnings. However, the trend of operating margin and returns on capital employed had been declining for all the sub-sectors. Inventory management proved to be costly for TP as financial resources diverted to maintain inventory had an undesirable effect on their indigenious technology. Most of the sample firms in the electronics industry were found to have incurred R&D expenditure to derive tax incentives. As a result the resources got diverted away from other creative operational or skill improvement efforts to unproductive and wasteful R&D activities. Thus, R&D did not have the desirable influence on the components of TFPG. The present study showed that unplanned and ad hoc technology imports or even raw material imports was not conducive to the growth of both the components of TFPG. Older firms need to develop their technology or adequately import better and more sophisticated technology. This would enable older (more experienced) electronic firms to overcome the negative influence of age, reflected in our analysis. This is, however, applicable to only those segments of the electronics industry where firms preferred to serve lower end of the market as well as lower end of the technological spectrum (eg. Computer hardware and other electronics sub-sectors). Electronics industry like any other capital goods industry offers scope for vertical integration. Management of the firms in electronics industry should emphasize on vertical integration, expansion of scale of operations and should initiate R&D investments to build up R&D base, among others to improve TEC and TP. This would also help to check the decline in operating margin and returns from invested capital among the firms. Thus, improved managerial effectiveness and decision making do help in the form of generating thereby surpluses facilitating to achieve higher TP and even TEC. Regional and State governments should provide adequate policy support and appropriate industrial infrastructure to electronic firms which would in turn improve their managerial effectiveness and TFPG.

As technology improves every day, new developments have constantly infiltrated our lives. The market has become more intense because of the frequency that enterprises launched their products. Although enterprises had improved the quality of products as well as to the brand image to attract its customer, however, many companies are still facing the crisis. Due to those brand damage events, the reputation of the brand could break down overnight. How to provide the best remedy to make up for customers at the right time in order to save the damaged goodwill or to maintain customers brand attitude and royalty is a subject worthwhile a discussion. In August 2016, Samsung Electronics, this almost a hundred-year funded worldwide based corporation, has faced the biggest challenge ever. The new launched mobile phone which was considered as Samsung's annual diamond product called Galaxy Note 7, it has exploded by battery problem. In the day of the listing, there were actually not only one but many new phones spontaneous combustion caused by the battery overheating. The design of this paper is based on the Samsung mobile phone explosion. Through the scenario simulations, this paper is going to explore whether the different remedies will affect remedy results or brand's attitude. Furthermore, this paper is targeting at understanding in what remediation, customer would feel the most satisfactory after the service recovery in different crisis situations. Overall, the results have indicated that customers would not blame at enterprises when crisis incident belongs to external attributions. Meanwhile, it would be better if enterprises have also assisted customers for returned to the status before the error. By contrast, when crisis incident belongs to internal attributions, both customer satisfaction and perceived justice have significantly plunged no matter enterprises provided what service recovery methods. At this time, enterprises need to provide compensate. The result also shows that branding experience has moderating effect between crisis incidents and service recovery. After the recovery, customer satisfaction and perceived justice have outstanding positive effects on brand attitude.

Under the framework of the mentoring system, the researcher tries to explore the training culture for project managers in the electronic manufacturing industry, based on the current situation and history of the mentoring system. In terms of work performance, the researcher aims to understand the system’s influence on task performance, promotion, and performance review. In the aspect of career development, the researcher also endeavors to identify the influence of the mentoring system on professional competencies, potential, and social emotional supports. Through these studies, the researcher attempts to determine the key success factors of the mentoring system for project managers. The methodology this research adopts is based on the qualitative case study method. Information is collected through in-depth interviews with department heads, masters, and disciples. A total of ten employees from three companies have been selected for the interview. They are selected, through a convenience sampling approach, from the electronic manufacturing industry, including brands, consumer electronic products, and system suppliers. According to the cases study, the mentoring relationship can be categorized into three types, i.e., mentoring of newly-recruited junior employees, mentoring of newly-recruited senior employees, and mentoring upon request. The study shows that, except for one case, all masters and disciples have maintained good interactions in both work and personal life. Systematic teaching programs and regular performance tests are not the sole ways used by business owners to ensure the smooth operations of the mentoring system. In terms of the work performance of project managers, the mentoring system has great influence on their task performance in various aspects, such as the development of problem-solving abilities, professional abilities, and interpersonal skills, as well as the establishment of broader perspectives of the work and the organization. The system also affects the promotion of project managers, taking into account the managerial/professional skills and the business succession plan. In terms of career development, the mentoring system provides analysis on work competencies and potential of the project managers. The former includes analysis on the diversification of competencies, job assignment, performance evaluation, benefit systems and promotion. The latter includes analysis on the aggressiveness, potential, and competitiveness. In summary, the key success factors for mentoring system of the case studied include the commitments to establishing values and learning models to accumulate the tacit knowledge of employees; the construction of knowledge-transmitting platforms and work supports; mutual social-emotional support between masters and disciples; as well as the efforts to satisfy the respective needs of the department managers, masters and disciples. Finally, the researcher has come to the conclusion based on the findings of the study. It is hoped that these conclusions would be helpful to both future researchers and business owners who are interested in implementing mentoring systems for their companies. The researcher has also provided management suggestions for implementing mentoring systems in the electronic manufacturing industry. At the last part of this study, the researcher further shares his experience and feelings in the research process, highlights the possible restrictions, and provides recommendations for future researchers.

ABSTRACT Comes along with the voice-wave of international environment protection, it had developed many trade-terms and many other laws to promote the enterprises must bear responsibility of the natural environment worldwide. While the enterprises are facing environmental pressure comes from international laws, such as 13-Aug.-2008 WEEE (Waste Electrical Electronic Instruction), 1-July-2006 RoHS (Hazardous Substances Directive), 11-Aug.-2007 Eup (Ecological Design of Energy Using Products Directive), 1-June-2008 REACH (the New EU Chemicals Policy Act), at current stage HF (Halogen free) and so on. Recently, both enterprise image and environmental performance were as important as product quality and pricing in the intense competition market. The mainly scope of the research will focus on domestic electronic manufacturing industry as research population, sampling size is 120 sets of valid questionnaires and the recovery rate is 30%. Research results as follows: 1. Market orientation has a positive effect on green innovation dimension. This research showed that overall dimensions of market orientation will affect green innovation. But there is only customer orientation has positive effect on green innovation in the subordination dimensions of market orientation. Neither competitor orientation nor coordinate orientation between functional departments has positive effect on green innovation. It represent to there is only market orientation with customer thinking will affect green innovation. 2. Entrepreneurial orientation has a positive effect on green innovation orientation. This research also shows that the overall dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation will affect green innovation. But there is only innovation orientation has positive effect in green innovation in the subordination dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation. Neither risk-responsibility orientation nor proactive-capacity orientation has positive effect in green innovation. It represent to there is only entrepreneurial orientation with innovation orientation will affect green innovation. 3. Green innovation orientation has a positive effect in organization performance orientation. This research shows that the overall dimensions of green innovation orientation will affect the organization performance orientation. But there is only the innovation in green manufacturing process in the subordination dimensions of green innovation orientation has positive effect in financial performance of the organization performance. And the green manufacturing process innovation of green innovation dimension has a positive effect in organization performance. All the other subordination dimensions of green innovation orientation have no positive effect in organizational performance. It represent to green manufacturing process innovation has a significant effect in the financial performance but the other factors are insignificant. 4. The influence of organizational performance on market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation with green innovation dimension mediating effect. The results of research show that green innovation has benefit effect for market orientation dimension on organization performance. But green innovation dimension doesn’t have any additional benefit effect for entrepreneurial orientation on organization performance. Possible reason will be because the new connotation of green innovation could be fulfilled the application on entrepreneurial orientation. The empirical recommendation as below listed: 1. To offer a definite thinking to enhance the organizational performance. The research found that both market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation on the adoption of green innovation, the adoption of green innovation on organizational performance, have precise and positive effect. The empirical results would offer specific thinking to provide electrical manufacturing industry inTaiwan how to adopt green innovation to improve organizational performance. 2. Well-being is a key factor for putting social change and life indicator under the microscope. The pursuit of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has led to an economic miracle in Taiwan for the past few decades; however, the relationship between the increasing wealth and people’s well-being remains questionable. Related research has shown that the increase of GDP does not relatively enhance well-being. Most research on workplace well-being in Taiwan has been focused on military teaching and the service industry, but few researchers have touched on the well-being of workers in electronics manufacturing services (EMS) factories, which are the most important of all Taiwan’s overall exports. This research is based on an analysis of the workplace well-being of female workers in the EMS industry and discusses the topic from their perspective using Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET) as a tool to interview eight females who work in the warehouse. These are individual interviews, conducted face-to-face with pictures in order to investigate their needs and ideas. The interview data is collected and analyzed by ZMET with regard to perceiving the Conceptual Metaphor and Deep Metaphor of female workers’ well-being at the EMS factory. This research also contains a related discussion of the female workers’ well-being and suggestions.
