Abstract:
Web-based systems have been utilized widely. These systems enable consumers to be aware of the product and provide them additional information to set the final purchase. Therefore, configuring electronic marketing outlets is necessary. Here, the author points out different aspects of information technology (IT) in marketing. The author proposes an integrated mathematical framework to optimize decisions in web-based marketing environment considering online catalogues. Using the concepts of management information systems, the customers’ visit data of viewing the producers’ websites and web-based catalogues are recorded. These data are applied in marketing optimizations. The six sigma concept is considered as a threshold for attractiveness of customers on a product. The effectiveness and applicability of the proposed integrated model is illustrated in numerical examples.

Abstract:
The issues of reducing time and labor costs for document processing, expanding and improving the quality of bibliographic records (BR), library products and services continue to be actual in Russian libraries. To accomplish these tasks, various projects of corporate library interaction are being implemented, aimed at solving the issues of acquisition, cataloguing, creation of central and distributed catalogs and user services. Library cooperation in cataloguing allows providing libraries with the possibility of mutual records use with their subsequent improvement and promotes unification of BR elements. The purpose of the article is to identify the problems that hinder the effectiveness of creating and using electronic catalogue BR in SPSTL SB RAS. It also shows the difficulties faced by the library cataloguers when borrowing records from the Russian Book Chamber database (RBC DB). It is noted that by borrowing records from the RBC DB, SPSTL SB RAS provides an opportunity to use its EC to the libraries of the research institutions of SB RAS (SRI of SB RAS). The article also demonstrates the experience of the Unified Automation Center (UAC) of SPSTL SB RAS, which contains information resources of libraries of the research institutions of SB RAS. Electronic catalogs and databases of these libraries are presented on the website of SPSTL SB RAS in the «Electronic catalogs and databases of the Library System of the research institutions of SB RAS». The conclusions are made that when borrowing records from the library electronic catalogs, the question of their quality and uniformity is left open, using the technology of corporate cataloguing brings significant advantages to the work of libraries. On the one hand, it allows to save labor and time resources by ready-made records of the RBC DB, on the other hand – to provide an opportunity to use BR by other libraries, while advertising their own information resources.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to represent modern digital communication as an innovative mean of public libraries in Ukraine, and the importance of its development in crisis phenomena conditions. The research methodology founds on the application of a set of general scientific methods (generalisation, analysis, synthesis, prognostication), and special librarian ones. The organic combination of systemic, sociocommunicative, structural and functional research ways has contributed to the achievement of the set goal. The scientific novelty of the study consists in substantiating the value approach to the individualisation of public libraries service activity, when providing a friendly, comfortable communication environment for the user in conditions of digitalisation of social processes becomes the leading aim. Library innovations have been singled out. They are based on innovative information technologies, but have different social and technological grounds, in particular: organisational, service, product, technical, business. Conclusions. In current conditions, public libraries play the role of information hubs, where information streams flow for their further processing and redistribution according to users’ needs. The main goal of individualising the service activity is to provide a user-friendly and comfortable communication environment. The variety of innovations that have rapidly met library activities have different social and technological grounds. We have highlighted the following: organisational, service, product, technical, business ones. Nowadays, the activity of blighty public libraries is developing in innovative directions using various channels of communication with users, in particular, their own sites, blogs, social networks, messengers, online platforms, media formats, channels in Tik- Tok and YouTube. Libraries of Ukraine fill the information space with their own products (databases, electronic catalogues, collections of digitised publications, etc.), provide virtual services, organise access to external resources, etc. The implementation of modern information technologies into library processes has brought library and information users’ services to a new level. The library digital model of today makes it possible to conduct a full-fledged dialogue with distant users, and allow them to access library services at the same level as those readers who work with information directly in book collections.

Abstract:
The article presents the Lithuanian Language Resources Information System E-Language, with a focus on those resources which include the lexicographic data on dialects: The Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language (DLL) and its three catalogues, namely The Main Catalogue, The Catalogue of New Additions, and The Catalogue of Dialects. The article addresses the modernized structure of the data from these lexicographic resources and its search system and discusses the problems faced by the developers of the system and their solutions. It is concluded that the development of E-Language marked a quantitative and qualitative improvement of its predecessor, the Lithuanian Language Resources Information System (LLRIS), which came to life in 2015: it was modernized on both a quantitative level (by integrating 3 dictionaries and 1 catalogue into the information system and creating 7 services) and a qualitative level (the availability, usability and integrity of Lithuanian language resources were improved). E-Language development process also accelerated the advancement of other electronic products and services: it contributed to solving the systemic problems of the Lithuanian font Palemonas, encouraged the appearance of the keyboard layout known as the Copenhagen Transcription, etc. One of the further tasks for the improvement of the information system E-Language could be the quantitative addition of integrated resources, as only a small part of the catalogues of The Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language is digitalized.

Abstract:
Matching algorithms automatically discover semantic relations between two autonomously developed conceptual representations of two overlapping domains. Typical examples of such conceptualisations are electronic market catalogues (e.g., unspsc and eCl@ss) and Web directories (e.g., google and yahoo). The objective of this paper is the description of a use case in which the matching algorithm CtxMatch, developed at ITC-IRST and the University of Trento, has been used to re-classify into the Universal Standard Products and Services Classification (unspsc) the catalogue of office equipment and accessories used by a worldwide telecommunication company to classify its suppliers. On the basis of this experience we are envisaging new applications of the algorithm in the area of demand aggregation. We conclude the paper by briefly describing a future application in this area.

The internet business is used for information exchange, product catalogs, promotional media, e-mails, bulletin boards, electronic questionnaires, and mailing lists. The internet can also be used to dialogue, discuss, and consult with consumers online, so that consumers can be involved proactively and interactively in the design, development, marketing, and sale of products. By using the internet, we can run an electronic business or commonly called e-business as a means of expanding employment opportunities. Given the smaller quota to find employment, that ebusiness is the right solution for college graduates.

The article highlights the research work “Information and bibliographic activities in the modern electronic environment”, “Electronic bibliographic products in the structure of information resources of Federal and Central regional libraries” carried out by the Scientific research Department of bibliography of the Russian State Library in 2017 — the first half of 2018. The author considers a number of general theoretical and methodological issues: what are the library’s information resources; what is the place of bibliographic resources in their structure; and what is the type-specific structure of bibliographic resources of library, including electronic ones. The important part of the library’s information resources are bibliographic resources, including electronic of two main types (classes): innovative (bibliographic databases, electronic catalogues), and traditional (bibliographic catalogues-inventories, indexes, lists, reviews, etc.). The article presents the results of the comparative analysis of resources of the second type created in the Russian State Library and the National Library of Russia in 2009—2017.The websites of both libraries contain digital copies and electronic versions of printed bibliographic publications, as well as original bibliographic products (which have no printed analogues). Online bibliographic products have firmly taken their place in the structure of information resources of national libraries, somewhere supplementing them and somewhere replacing the printed format.

Abstract:
Collaborative development of engineered products in a business to business (B2B) environment requires more than the selection of components from an on-line catalogue. It involves the electronic exchange of product, process, and production engineering information during both design and manufacturing. Although the state of the practice does include a variety of ways to exchange product data electronically, it does not extend to the exchange of manufacturing process data. The reason is simple: process data are usually tied to specific manufacturing resources. These resources are not known typically at product development time. This paper proposes an approach called integrated product and process data, in which manufacturing process data are considered during product development. This approach replaces traditional process plans, which are resource specific, with a resource-independent process representation. Such a representation will allow a much wider collaboration among business partners and provide the necessary base for collaborative product development.

Abstract:
A pattern is a model that allows reusing a successful solution to the same problem in a different context. A pattern implementation could be the elaboration of an analysis model to incorporate good practices patterns Conceptual Modelling of Electronic Government systems. Defining a new pattern, and selecting a previously existing one from a limited set, called catalogue, are essential activities that every analysis model must solve when using patterns. The present work describes a proposal to manage a Business Patterns catalogue that can be applied to Conceptual Modelling of software products. Business Patterns allow to model and design business processes inside an organization, being it public or private. An application, called “PatCat” (Pattern Catalogue), was developed to test de proposal, using the Business Model of an Information System for a public education institution as a pilot. The introduction of patterns at the beginning of the Modelling Process allows to simplify and clarify the requirements elicitation, amongst other benefits. Thus, a specific management application for a pattern catalogue is useful to standardize and speed up this software design task.

Abstract:
The development of technology at this time can facilitate someone in finding the product they want. This is because the availability of information, and access services that can allow someone to get what they want. Fashion products become the influence of various industries, because in the present day someone wants to look neat and fashionable, therefore there are many online businesses with fashion products that exist in Indonsesia. The development of online fashion products can not be separated from the quality of websites that offer convenience, completeness of products and information about products online. However, there are constraints in shopping online that consumers can not feel and see the product directly. Consumers can only read product information through online catalogs and read comments by previous consumers. The purpose of this study is to determine consumer attitudes in online shopping with the quality of websites, electronic worth of mouth, perceived benefits and consumer trust in shopping online. This study uses 220 respondents who have been shopping for fashion products online with purchases less than six months and spread throughout the territory of Indonesia. Data testing is done by using SEM with AMOS software. The findings show that not all the variables tested have significant and expected results. Electronic worth of mouth of the beliefs and perceived benefits in consumer attitudes of online shopping is not significant. This is because, this research is a research attitude toward behavior. It will be difficult to measure the consistency of one's behavior to stay the same between one behavior and another.

Among the libraries of research institutions of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RI SB RAS) only 29 of 70 are members of any corporate library system. A survey of these libraries staff has identified the following issues that prevent them from working within corporate library systems: absence of electronic catalog in libraries related to lack of funding to purchase automated library information systems (ALIS), using various ALIS, different quality and uniformity missing of electronic catalogue records. The author suggests possible ways to solve these problems: transition to automated system IRBIS for libraries that work in other ALIS, joining IRBIS-Corporation, using cloud technology to embed information resources of the library. In the context of activity in library corporations, participating libraries afford their electronic catalog into the union catalogue; implement technology of corporate catalogization, interlibrary loan and electronic document delivery; solve problems of information services of users applying the corporative product. However, to resolve the whole complex of problems some libraries have to participate in several corporate systems. For effective corporate interaction libraries need a unified library corporate system combining all libraries of SB RAS’ research institutions and providing solutions to all complex problems.

Lack of age-appropriate commercially drug products availability is a common problem in pediatric therapeutics; this population needs improved and safer drug delivery. In addition, biopharmaceutic aspects, dosage requirements, and swallowing abilities demand pediatric forms different to adult formulations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the authorization availability from United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) of oral essential medicines for children and analyze its age-appropriateness for oral administration in children. All oral drugs from 7th List of Essential Medicines for Children by World Health Organization (WHO) were selected. Availability of commercial drug products was collected from OrangeBook, Spanish drug product catalogue, British electronic Medicines Compendium, and the International Vademecum. Tablets, effervescent tablets, and capsules were considered as not age-appropriate forms. Liquid forms, powder for oral suspension, mini tablets, granules, and soluble films were considered as age-appropriate forms due to their flexibility. More than 80% of the studied drugs possess a commercial authorization in oral forms in both EMA and FDA. Nevertheless, around 50% of these formulations are not age-appropriate for most pediatric groups. This study shows the lack of age-appropriate medicines for children. More efforts are needed to improve development and approval of pediatric medicines.

Abstract:
PurposeTo propose a model of a privacy‐enhanced catalogue search system (PECSS) in an attempt to address privacy threats to consumers, who search for products and services on the world wide web.Design/methodology/approachThe model extends an agent‐based architecture for electronic catalogue mediation by supplementing it with a privacy enhancement mechanism. This mechanism introduces fake queries into the original stream of user queries, in an attempt to reduce the similarity between the actual interests of users (“internal user profile”) and the interests as observed by potential eavesdroppers on the web (“external user profile”). A prototype was constructed to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the model.FindingsThe evaluation of the model indicates that, by generating five fake queries per each original user query, the user's profile is hidden most effectively from any potential eavesdropper. Future research is needed to identify the optimal glossary of fake queries for various clients. The model also should be tested against various attacks perpetrated against the mixed stream of original and fake queries (i.e. statistical clustering).Research limitations/implicationsThe model's feasibility was evaluated through a prototype. It was not empirically tested against various statistical methods used by intruders to reveal the original queries.Practical implicationsA useful architecture for electronic commerce providers, internet service providers (ISP) and individual clients who are concerned with their privacy and wish to minimize their dependencies on third‐party security providers.Originality/valueThe contribution of the PECSS model stems from the fact that, as the internet gradually transforms into a non‐free service, anonymous browsing cannot be employed any more to protect consumers' privacy, and therefore other approaches should be explored. Moreover, unlike other approaches, our model does not rely on the honesty of any third mediators and proxies that are also exposed to the interests of the client. In addition, the proposed model is scalable as it is installed on the user's computer.

Abstract:
Catalogers in academic libraries who belong to ALA’s Technical Services Division were surveyed to determine if and how their job functions have changed over the past ten years. The 271 respondents indicated a change from print to electronic formats, involvement of nonprofessionals in higher levels of cataloging, a trend toward outsourcing (particularly, copy cataloging and foreign-language materials), and more cataloging of specialized items, audiovisual materials, and digital documents by professional librarians. The latter now use their expertise to edit problematic records, engage in managerial tasks, catalog and attempt authority control of Internet resources, do Internet training or Web page design, and use HTML. More and more catalogers are involved in activities formerly in the domain of systems librarians (selecting and implementing catalog products, database maintenance, etc.).

Abstract:
This article discusses the application of a new variant of high-level Petri nets, the so-called SGML nets, for modeling business processes in the area of Internet-based commerce. SGML nets are designed to capture the process of generating and manipulating structured documents based on the international standard SGML. Since the currently most relevant document standards on the Internet are HTML (an SGML application) and XML (a subset of SGML), SGML nets offer an elegant way to integrate central aspects of Electronic Commerce applications, such as the generation of online product catalogs, processing of online orders, and electronic document interchange between companies, into a unified formal workflow model. The article gives an introduction to the central concepts of SGML nets and includes an example of their application from the area of online order processing.

Abstract:
Make-to-order manufacturers, such as the manufacturers related to the maritime industry, are more and more following the worldwide trend toward further outsourcing of processes and services to benefit from a better specialization, lead time reduction, and better cost performance of smaller and self-responsible companies. This trend requires the optimization of supply chain management with respect to interorganizational information management. Especially in the shipbuilding industry, supply chains are characterized by project orientation (new supplier structures are required for each ship type), the high number of suppliers (more than 60% of a containership consists of supplier parts), and heterogeneous structure of cooperation partners (subcontractor, component supplier, material supplier, engineering offices, etc.), which all together leads to different requirements and a limited cooperation duration. In many cases the expense for both sites (customers and suppliers) for organizing the cooperation is extremely high in relation to the duration of the cooperation. Because of the temporary nature and the heterogeneous portfolio of maritime supply chains, the management mechanisms applied need to be flexible, standardized, and easy to reconfigure. An open communication infrastructure, agreed upon data exchange standards, and harmonized workflows are vital success parameters for maritime supply chains. The European research and development project Dynamic Interorganisational Co-operative Networks for the Maritime Industry (DYCONET) has been established to define and develop an open communication infrastructure that can be managed also by small and medium enterprises. One important part of the infrastructure is intelligent electronic supplier catalogs. The pilot implementations of the catalogs for complex valves have shown advantages for all partners of the maritime supply chain. The developed intelligent catalog modules are based on international standards, which enables easy extension to other product groups. The DYCONET architecture is the step from centralized internet portals to distributed cooperative design networks.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to substantiate the transformation of information resources of public libraries of Ukraine in modern conditions. The methodological basis of the article was based on systemic, information-service and modernist approaches and the application of the principles of objectivity and comprehensiveness of knowledge. The organic combination of structural-functional analysis, synthesis, and cognitive methods made it possible to successfully realize the set goal. The scientific novelty consists in considering the main aspects of the formation of electronic information resources against the background of the aggression of the Russian Federation against the sovereign state of Ukraine, starting in 2014, arguing that public libraries actively participated in the information processes of creating a regional source base on events that take place in modern history of our state. The existing ones are analyzed and the author's understanding of the term "electronic library and information resources" is proposed. Conclusions. Digitization stimulates the general trend of transformation of public libraries of Ukraine into hubs for comprehensive processing of all types of information on all media. The use of new media in library practice contributes to the production of relevant electronic information resources, which marks the third stage of the use of information and communication technologies in the work of libraries. The public libraries of Ukraine currently have the following types of electronic information resources: a) electronic catalogs; b) full-text databases; c) electronic collections of text analogues of printed publications; d) collections of digitized publications; e) electronic documents that do not have printed counterparts; f) electronic publications of audio and video information; g) multimedia products. Electronic information resources enrich the assortment and include the following audiovisual products: audio recordings, films, videos, slides, presentations, etc., including exhibitions and tours of the library, advertising of new arrivals, online meetings with famous people or solutions to current community issues, etc. Own accounts in social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram), messengers (WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber), video hosting (YouTube), on the one hand, have a significant potential for popularizing the library, on the other hand, are a platform for approving the demand for created electronic information resources.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is an analysis of evolutionary stages in the development of online-catalog and the requirements to these services in the context of customer orientation. The methodological basis of scientific intelligence is a customer-oriented approach that allows studying library products and services through the prism its accordance and level of satisfaction needs of customers (users) in the library; the principle of historicism, allowed to identify the origins of online cataloging, the stages of its development and quality of online-catalogs; source analysis and synthesis. The scientific novelty is the technological evolution of online catalogs were studied the first time in the Ukrainian library and the modern requirements to these services in the context of customer orientation and web 2.0 technologies are defined. Conclusions – automation of library at the current stage should be concentrated on developing and deploying electronic catalogs which are suited to the expectation of the new generation as competent web users. Improving the search tools should not be directed at the library staff but used for breaking down the barriers that users have when trying to navigate in different library resources and websites therefore will be possible while the architecture of modern automated library information systems does not interfere with the cooperation of the user and catalog. The evolutionary solution to this problem can be a reconstruction of automated libraries and information systems in the way by changing their architecture to one the user is orientated.

Abstract:
A working group (WG) of experts from diverse fields related to nicotine and tobacco addiction was convened to identify elements and measures from the Host: Social/Cognitive domain to include in the Tobacco Regulatory Research Collection in the PhenX Toolkit, a catalogue of measures for biomedical research. This paper describes the methods used to identify, select, approve and include measures in the toolkit with potential relevance to users of both conventional and newer tobacco products, such as electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). In addition to 25 complementary measures primarily focused on cigarette use already present in the PhenX Toolkit, the WG recommended 11 additional social/cognitive measures focused on children and adult users or potential users of tobacco products. Of these, 10 were self-administered measures: frequency of communication with parents about smoking, quality of communication with parents about smoking, susceptibility to tobacco use, behaviour economics/purchase behaviour, motivation to quit (both single and multi-item measures), hedonic tone or response to pleasurable situations, multigroup ethnic identity, peer and family influence on smoking, attentional control and house rules about tobacco use. The remaining selected measure was computer based (distress tolerance). Although validated tools for use in the Host: Social/Cognitive realm are available, much remains to be done to develop, standardise and validate the tools for application to users of e-cigarettes and other non-combusted tobacco products, non-English language speakers and adolescents.

Abstract:
The first part of the analytical review presents the main directions of application of modern Multisensor systems such as "electronic nose". The review is based on the results of the umbrella search for information on the given words and phrases. Umbrella search has shown its effectiveness in organizing publications in the selected area, reducing the number of repetitive links and unrelated to the topic of the search. The search was carried out on the electronic catalogs of Russian and international search engines. The tendency of growth of interest to the chosen subject for the last 10 years is traced. Traditional research directions for artificial smell systems are noted. After a slight decline in 2005-2010, the share of work to address the challenges of improving quality and safety in all sectors of human activity, including the food industry, agriculture and the environment, is growing. Some solutions in the field of analysis of food products, raw materials, finished products are systematized. A new direction of research using "electronic nose" systems based on sensors of different types of action is discussed. This direction is medicine, while there is a significant breakthrough in the intensity of the use of EN in medical practice for the development of non-invasive diagnostic methods. The positive properties of such devices and approaches are a short study time, minimal sample preparation and recovery of the system after measurement, as well as a small mass/volume of the sample, the possibility of non-invasive diagnosis. The most frequently published research on the results of the use of such systems in the analysis of bioassays, especially interesting non-invasive diagnosis. Among the diagnosed lead direction oncological, gynecological, psychiatric. However, there are single publications and to solve problems in Pediatrics, dentistry, endocrinology and others.

Abstract:
As Europe becomes a global force, it needs to compete with other trade blocs in the numerous players, of which libraries are one. This has been acknowledged by the CEC's Library Action Programme, initiated in 1985, which covered the creation of machine-readable bibliographies and retroconversion of library catalogues, interconnection of automated systems, innovative library services using new information technology, the development of commercial products etc, for libraries, and exchange of knowledge and experience. The national libraries project has made most progress. In 1991 a further Libraries Programme began, with similar objectives; from many proposals, 14 have been retained. The IMPACT 1 programme (1988) was concerned with the information services market – multimedia databases, networking for shared access to information, electronic document delivery, and development of the market for optical disc products. This programme, which has so far not met with much success, is being followed by IMPACT 2 (approved 1991), which aims on a reduced budget to create a favourable climate for the information services market: improving the understanding of the market, overcoming legal and administrative barriers, increasing the user-friendliness of services, and support for strategic information initiatives. There are a number of specific steps that could be taken to make progress towards the objectives, which would justify a large budget. Moreover, the limited funds should be used to foster pan-European information services, notably in business, finance and law. Related CEC programmes (including ESPRIT and EUREKA) are not well coordinated, and there are several weaknesses, from bureaucracy to a lack of measurement of results. Overall aims of CEC information programmes include developing a European information policy, fostering the information industry as a growth sector, and encouraging existing suppliers to extend their products into global ones. There are good market opportunities, but many challenges to be faced.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT When an oil spill occurs, there is an immediate need on the part of spill responders to know the properties of the spilled oil, as these will affect the behavior, fate, and effects of the oil, which will in turn affect the choice of countermeasures. However, it is often difficult or impossible to obtain a sample of the spilled oil, let alone the specialized analysis required to determine its properties, in a manner timely enough to suit the circumstances of an oil spill. Under the scrutiny of the media and the public, answers regarding the identity and predicted behavior of the spilled oil will be expected immediately, if not sooner. In preparation for such emergencies, the Emergencies Science Division (ESD) of Environment Canada has been collecting properties data for crude oils and oil products since 1984. Basic physical properties—density, viscosity, pour point, etc.—and environmentally relevant characteristics—evaporation rates, emulsion formation, chemical dispersibility—are measured. Properties related to health and safety—flash point, volatile organic compounds, sulfur—also are determined. In fact, nearly 20 different types of measurements are made for both fresh and weathered crude oils and oil products. To date data has been collected for more than 400 oils. For ease of access, this information is stored in an electronic database. The database in turn is accessible via the World Wide Web, and is also periodically printed in an easy-to-read catalogue format. The wide variety of data collected in the database also makes it possible to examine both simple and complex relationships that may exist between oil properties and spill behavior. This presentation will review the full scope of information determined and collected by ESD. Using tables and graphs, examples will be presented of the many ways in which this information can be viewed and used by both laymen and experts in the field of oil spills.

Abstract:
This contribution includes the registry of 28 species of medicinal plants and their derived products used to treat respiratory diseases in theMetropolitan Area of Buenos Aires, Argentina, introduced by Bolivian and Chinese immigrants. Information on these species (their assigned local uses) was obtained from interviews with local informants and from other sources, such as labels, brochures and catalogs, print and electronic. A bibliographic review was carried out on the biological activity and effects studied in order to evaluate its correspondence with the assigned local uses. The degree of visibility of the treated species was analyzed, according to their circulation in the restricted commercial circuits (Chinese and Bolivian immigrants) and the general commercial circuit. Of the total, 17 species belong to the segment of Chinese immigrants, and the remaining 11 to the Bolivian segment. The most frequently reported respiratory conditions are: "asthma", "cough", "bronchitis", "respiratory tract infections", "lung ailments". The immigrant segments play a fundamental role in the conservation of biocultural diversity in the study area.

Abstract:
The exponential growth of the Internet and increasing communication and computational power have created many opportunities for advancing engineering, manufacturing, and business activities. Among them are electronic catalogs. These have become basic information resources to a number of people, ranging from shoppers looking for personal items to engineers selecting electromechanical parts to build a product. Although rich in content, current catalog systems are limited both in search quality and in realizing the full potential of the retrieved information. The active catalog system brings a conceptually new idea to electronic commerce by providing a new, computationally usable, catalog information environment about components and their use in applications. It utilizes a rich body of domain knowledge to facilitate access and retrieval of component information. The utility of retrieved information is enhanced by using it to rapidly construct simulation programs and test alternatives, supporting a “try before you buy” paradigm in which users evaluate candidate components within simulations of their design. We describe services provided in the active catalog system to support engineers in selecting and evaluating electromechanical components and subsystems. The services include mechanisms for creating queries for parts based on their intended use rather than merely parametric specifications, refining those queries to take account of constraints imposed by domain knowledge, providing multimodal information to help engineers assess and compare candidate parts, and generating simulation models for candidate parts and integrating them to provide simulation models for candidate systems.

Abstract:
Background: Quantum mechanical simulations of chiroptical properties, such as electronic circular dichroism (ECD), optical rotation (OR), and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD), have rapidly become very popular to assign the absolute configuration of novel natural products. Objective: We review the application of the ECD/OR/VCD computational methodology to chiral metabolites of fungal origin. First, we summarize the fundamentals of the three spectroscopies; then, we focus on the specific experimental and computational issues allied to the application of their calculations. Methods: We surveyed the entire literature describing the use of ECD/OR/VCD computations for fungal metabolites, and catalogued all papers according to the method employed and to the structural family of compounds. Then, we chose several examples to illustrate the use of the techniques and highlight the practical application of the computational approach. Results: Our literature survey demonstrates that the simulation of ECD/OR/VCD spectra is nowadays widespread and accessible also to non-experts, although a good computational practice is necessary to avoid wrong assignments. ECD is still the most common technique used in the context of fungal metabolites. OR and VCD may be profitably employed when the compound of interest lacks chromophoric groups. Our examples illustrate that the combination of two or more chiroptical methods is strongly advisable in some cases, especially in the presence of high conformational flexibility, where a single technique does not lead to a safe conclusion. Conclusion: The ECD/OR/VCD computational approach is a reliable and versatile method to assign the absolute configuration of fungal metabolites and related natural products.
