Popkin, Timothy John. "Space-variant picture coding." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2010. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/612.

Full text
Abstract:
Space-variant picture coding techniques exploit the strong spatial non-uniformity of the human visual system in order to increase coding efficiency in terms of perceived quality per bit. This thesis extends space-variant coding research in two directions. The first of these directions is in foveated coding. Past foveated coding research has been dominated by the single-viewer, gaze-contingent scenario. However, for research into the multi-viewer and probability-based scenarios, this thesis presents a missing piece: an algorithm for computing an additive multi-viewer sensitivity function based on an established eye resolution model, and, from this, a blur map that is optimal in the sense of discarding frequencies in least-noticeable- rst order. Furthermore, for the application of a blur map, a novel algorithm is presented for the efficient computation of high-accuracy smoothly space-variant Gaussian blurring, using a specialised filter bank which approximates perfect space-variant Gaussian blurring to arbitrarily high accuracy and at greatly reduced cost compared to the brute force approach of employing a separate low-pass filter at each image location. The second direction is that of artifi cially increasing the depth-of- field of an image, an idea borrowed from photography with the advantage of allowing an image to be reduced in bitrate while retaining or increasing overall aesthetic quality. Two synthetic depth of field algorithms are presented herein, with the desirable properties of aiming to mimic occlusion eff ects as occur in natural blurring, and of handling any number of blurring and occlusion levels with the same level of computational complexity. The merits of this coding approach have been investigated by subjective experiments to compare it with single-viewer foveated image coding. The results found the depth-based preblurring to generally be significantly preferable to the same level of foveation blurring.

Pentes, Tatiana. "BlackBOX : painting a digital picture of documented memory." University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/357.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates and records the production of a digital media artwork blackBOX: Painting A Digital Picture of Documented Memory, generated through the media technologies of interactive multimedia, exploiting the creative potentials of digitally produced music, sound, image and text relationships in a disc based and online (Internet) environment. The artwork evolves from an imaginary electronic landscape that can be uniquely explored/ played in a non-sequential manner. The artwork/ ‘game’ is a search for the protagonist Nina’s hybrid cultural identity. This is mirrored in the exploration of random, fragmentary and non-linear experiences designed for the player engaged with the artwork. The subjective intervention of the player/ participant in the electronic artwork is metaphoric of the improvisational tendencies that have evolved in the Greek Blues (Rembetika), Jazz, and Hindustani musical and performative dance forms. The protagonist Nina’s discovery of these musical forms reveal her cultural/ spiritual origins. As a musical composer arranges notes, melodies and harmonies, and sections of instruments, so too, the multimedia producer designs a ensemble of audio-visual fragments to be navigated. Dance also becomes a driving metaphor, analogous to the players movement in and through these passages of image/ sound/ text and as a movement between theories and ideas explored in the content of the program. The central concern is to playfully reverse, obscure, distort the look of the dominating/colonialist gaze, in the production of an interactive ‘game’ and allow the girl to picture herself. One of my objectives is to explore the ways in which social research can be undertaken by the creation of an interactive program in the computer environment utilising interactive digital media technologies. The study reveals that, through the subjective intervention of the (player) user4 with the digital artefact, a unique experience and responsiveness is produced with the open ended text. The work is comprised of a website http://www.strangecities.net; an interactive CD-ROM; a gallery installation; digital photomedia images; and a written thesis documenting and theorising the production. 4 The term user, while widely debated has been in usage from the 1980s to refer to the unique human interaction with the digital artefact, electronic screen work, and computer interface.

Berg, Tessa. "Understanding iconography : a method to allow rich picture interpretation to improve." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2727.

Full text
Abstract:
Information Systems for complex situations often fail to adequately deliver quality and suitability. One reason for this failure is an inability to identify comprehensive user requirements. Seldom do all stakeholders, especially those „invisible‟ or „back room‟ system users, have a voice when systems are designed. If this is a global problem then it may impact on both the public and private sectors in terms of their ability to perform, produce and stay competitive. To improve upon this, system designers use rich pictures as a diagrammatic means of identifying differing world views with the aim of creating shared understanding of the organisation. Rich pictures have predominantly been used as freeform, unstructured tools with no commonly agreed syntax. This research has collated, analysed and documented a substantial collection of rich pictures into a single dataset. Attention has been focussed on three main research areas; how the rich picture is facilitated, how the rich picture is constructed and how to interpret the resultant pictures. This research highlights the importance of the rich picture tool and argues the value of adding levels of structure, in certain cases. It is shown that there are considerable benefits for both the interpreter and the creator by providing a pre-drawing session, a common key of symbols and a framework for icon understanding. In conclusion, it is suggested that there is some evidence that a framework which aims to support the process of the rich picture and aid interpretation is valuable.

Abstract:
At the frontier between entertainment industries and cultural production, vital content provider of digital economy, the motion picture industry raises several interesting questions in the field of economics and marketing. This dissertation tackles three important empirical questions in the motion picture industry using different methods (panel data models, difference-in-differences, and structural econometrics) and brings a new theoretical development about the nested logit model. The first chapter deals with online consumer reviews, also known as electronic word of mouth (eWOM), and focuses on the extent to which prerelease information alters the effect of eWOM on movie sales. The second chapter studies the collateral damages of the French anti-piracy law known as Hadopi on box office performances of movies, by carefully ruling out alternative explanations of the result. The third chapter investigates on seasonality in the French movie industry. The analysis separately identifies and decomposes movie sales into the number and quality of available movies, underlying seasonal demand, weather shocks, and national sales promotion by estimating a three-level nested logit model of weekly demand accounting for congestion on movie theaters' screens. The model is used to identify optimal release periods depending on the types of movie

Gabrysiak, Diane. "The representation of money in film : gold, paper, metal and electronic." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2006. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/48978/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of the representation of money on screen, in its textual and contextual constructions. Money, itself a representation, has a complex status: it is both an abstract concept, a symbol of value, a social convention, and a concrete object in its embodiment as gold, metal or paper. This study then is that of a representation of a representation. Its starting point is the very paradox of money as both an object endowed with great value while at the same time not worth much more than the substance it is made of or the numbers referring to it in newer forms of electronic money. The paradox is particularly salient in a medium that works through images while at the same time requiring itself so much money. The distinction between the two Latin words moneta and pecunia offers an understanding of money in its main properties and functions, as an exchange tool in constant circulation and as an object of hoarding, as belongings. This distinction is operative in the present study and runs through the thesis, together with the Marxian concepts of use-value and exchange value. The objective is to analyse patterns, peculiarities and meanings linked to the portrayal of money. This thesis does not encompass a comprehensive survey of money represented in all of cinema. Instead, the study is conducted in four groupings of films that are not necessarily thought of in connection with their images of money. Four chapters examine films from different contexts, periods, genres or trends in the cinema of various countries. The groupings are suggested partly by issues outside of money and partly by periods and kinds of money, and focus on case studies while simultaneously referring to a larger corpus. The first chapter examines the issues raised by the topic and surveys the existing literature. The second chapter undertakes an analysis of gold and gold mining in the context of the pioneering West in US films. The third chapter considers paper money and its meanings in neo-realist films. The thesis then proceeds to study films from the 1970s and 1980s. The fourth chapter concerns money in French films on high finance, and the last chapter looks at money as it appears in horror films. The thesis ends with a discussion of the recurrent patterns at work in the representation of money.

Full text
Abstract:
This study, situated in classroom practice and grounded in pedagogic wakefulness (Clandinin and Connelly, 2000), explores the nature of young children’s sense of voice as indicated through sustained interactions and representations of experiences with picturebook literature. The naturalistic research site was a grade one classroom setting in a large urban school. Student engagement and interactions with read-aloud events and responses to literature through multi-modal representations perpetuated meaning making and personal relevance. Coding procedures exemplified the nature of young children’s sense of voice as falling into two broad conceptual categories: (1) Situated Nature and (2) Experiential Nature. The Situated Nature of young children’s sense of voice revealed developmental, exploratory, and social sites of student engagement to literature. The Experiential Nature of young children’s sense of voice described three specificities of narrativity in their responses to picturebook literature: Young children’s multi-modal responses were interpreted as representative of Self- Narrativity, Interpretive-Narrativity, and Aesthetic-Narrativity. The findings contribute to a reconceptualized literacy curriculum which illuminates personal, social, and cultural identities, especially young children’s awareness of their individual sense of voice, developed through picturebook literature in primary classrooms.

Maynard, Sally. "Books with pictures and conversations? : a study of electronic books for children and their readers." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2001. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7569.

Full text
Abstract:
For the past 500 years, the printed page has served as the basic and major means of storing and presenting information and has become an everyday tool which most of us take for granted. Despite the obvious usefulness and universal nature of the printed book, however, the development of electronic technologies has led to the evolution of the concept of the electronic book. This represents a significant new medium, which offers added value to the printed book through its potential for including other media in addition to text on its pages. The thesis takes the electronic book as its main theme, putting particular emphasis on its relevance to children. The thesis includes a discussion of whether electronic books can encourage children to read both more electronic and printed books, which establishes that television, film and audio versions of texts do encourage the reading of printed editions (and vice versa). The conclusion is reached that electronic books may have the potential to exhibit the same effect, depending how similar they are to television, film and audio. The nature of classic texts and their currently decreasing popularity are considered, in addition to whether the electronic medium can and should encourage children to read more classics. An increasing awareness of the classics derived from media other than print is identified, leading to children having misconceptions about the texts. It is concluded that electronic books might have the power to bridge the gap between print and other media, introducing children to the classics in a form which is closer to the original text. An attempt was made to identify the elements which make an author popular in order that these could be incorporated into electronic books to make them more desired as reading material. Emphasising the views of children themselves, rather than critics, parents and other adults, a study investigated the popularity with young readers of the writer Roald Dahl. Participants found some qualities and characteristics in common between works by Dahl, thereby rendering them different from other books. Identifying what children like about a certain author would enable the inclusion of the desired elements into electronic books, thus encouraging children to read such books. Leading on from the potential increase in children reading electronic texts, the proposition is investigated that the medium on which a book is presented affects the reader's comprehension of, and satisfaction with the book. In order to investigate the effect of the electronic medium on comprehension, reading ability and speed, a study of user interaction with electronic books was carried out comparing children reading an electronic book incorporating the book metaphor with children reading the same text in two different printed versions. No evidence was found to suggest that the added effects and visual dimension offered by the electronic book reduced participants' comprehension of the text. Indeed, there was an indication that electronic books of this kind might actually aid the reader's comprehension of a text. If children are to read electronic books, where will they get them from? The embracing of the technology of electronic books is likely to have an effect on the principal book suppliers. The thesis therefore reports two questionnaire studies. The first investigates the opinions of children's librarians on the subject of electronic books, and the second concentrates on booksellers. Notable conclusions were that there is a positive attitude towards including electronic books as part of the children's library service, and a high proportion of libraries offer access to them, the majority through main libraries. Smaller book shops had not entered the field of selling electronic books in great numbers, and that there was general uncertainty about the place of such texts in such outlets. Respondents to both surveys believed that electronic books are durable, and can exist alongside the printed items within their concerns. Lastly, parents and schools have a role in making electronic books available to children. Due to the lack of research on the attitudes of parents and representatives of schools concerning electronic books, the thesis includes a discussion of existing surveys and studies of computer equipment in homes, schools and public libraries in order to gauge the involvement of parents and schools. This research shows that the picture of access to computer equipment for children is fairly inconsistent across the three sources under consideration. A general discussion follows, and overall conclusions are drawn, including that: the suggestion that electronic books can encourage children to read represents an area that is lacking in research and which would merit further work; the relationship between the printed book and its electronic counterpart is a symbiotic one; and the portability of electronic books is currently not of major significance, although this is likely to change with the increasing prominence of dedicated e-book readers.

Frederico, Aline. "Embodiment and agency in digital reading : preschoolers making meaning with literary apps." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/283637.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigates meaning-making in children's joint-reading transactions with literary apps. The analysis of meaning-making focuses on embodiment as a central aspect of literary app's texts and their reading and on children's negotiation of agency in the act of joint-reading. Meaning-making is understood through a multimodal social semiotics perspective, which considers that meaning is realised in the dynamic transaction between reader, text and social context. Therefore, the dissertation integrates the analysis of the apps and of the children's responses to capture the dynamics of meaning-making in such transactions. Case studies were conducted with six families, who read the apps The Monster at the End of This Book (Stone & Smollin, 2011) and Little Red Riding Hood (Nosy Crow, 2013) in an English public library. The central method of data collection involved video-recorded observations of parent-child joint-reading events, complemented by graphic elicitation, informal interviews and a questionnaire. The video data was analysed through multimodal methods. The findings indicate that the participant readers used their bodies not only as a material point of contact and activation of the interactive features but also as a resource for meaning-making in their transactions with the apps. The reader's body was essential in their engagement with the material and interactive affordances of the apps, in reader's expressions of their responses, and in the sharing of the reading experience with the parents. The body of the reader, through spontaneous and interactive gestures, is a mode of communication in the multimodal ecologies of both the text and the reader's responses. Furthermore, the child readers constantly negotiated their agency within the constraints posed by the text, which include the narrative itself and its interactive features, and those posed by the joint-reading situation. The bodies of the readers played an essential role in this dual negotiation of agency. Children's agency was scripted, that is, the readers exerted their agency within the limitations of a script. The script, however, allowed readers to improvise, and their performances also involved resistance to the script through playful subversion. In the joint-reading event, children's agency was foregrounded, positioning the children as protagonist readers, who performed most of the interactions and lived the aesthetic experience of the text fully, to the expense of their parents, who mostly participated as supporting readers, transferring their agency to the children through scaffolding.

Matran-Fernandez, Ana. "Collaborative brain-computer interfaces in rapid image presentation and motion pictures." Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/19204/.

Abstract:
The last few years have seen an increase in brain-computer interface (BCI) research for the able-bodied population. One of these new branches involves collaborative BCIs (cBCIs), in which information from several users is combined to improve the performance of a BCI system. This thesis is focused on cBCIs with the aim of increasing understanding of how they can be used to improve performance of single-user BCIs based on event-related potentials (ERPs). The objectives are: (1) to study and compare different methods of creating groups using exclusively electroencephalography (EEG) signals, (2) to develop a theoretical model to establish where the highest gains may be expected from creating groups, and (3) to analyse the information that can be extracted by merging signals from multiple users. For this, two scenarios involving real-world stimuli (images presented at high rates and movies) were studied. The first scenario consisted of a visual search task in which images were presented at high frequencies. Three modes of combining EEG recordings from different users were tested to improve the detection of different ERPs, namely the P300 (associated with the presence of events of interest) and the N2pc (associated with shifts of attention). We showed that the detection and localisation of targets can improve significantly when information from multiple viewers is combined. In the second scenario, feature movies were introduced to study variations in ERPs in response to cuts through cBCI techniques. A distinct, previously unreported, ERP appears in relation to such cuts, the amplitude of which is not modulated by visual effects such as the low-level properties of the frames surrounding the discontinuity. However, significant variations that depended on the movie were found. We hypothesise that these techniques can be used to build on the attentional theory of cinematic continuity by providing an extra source of information: the brain.

Abstract:

Humans have a high ability to extract visual data information acquired by sight. Trought a learning process, which starts at birth and continues throughout life, image interpretation becomes almost instinctively. At a glance, one can easily describe a scene with reasonable precision, naming its main components. Usually, this is done by extracting low-level features such as edges, shapes and textures, and associanting them to high level meanings. In this way, a semantic description of the scene is done. An example of this, is the human capacity to recognize and describe other people physical and behavioral characteristics, or biometrics. Soft-biometrics also represents inherent characteristics of human body and behaviour, but do not allow unique person identification. Computer vision area aims to develop methods capable of performing visual interpretation with performance similar to humans. This thesis aims to propose computer vison methods which allows high level information extraction from images in the form of soft biometrics. This problem is approached in two ways, unsupervised and supervised learning methods. The first seeks to group images via an automatic feature extraction learning , using both convolution techniques, evolutionary computing and clustering. In this approach employed images contains faces and people. Second approach employs convolutional neural networks, which have the ability to operate on raw images, learning both feature extraction and classification processes. Here, images are classified according to gender and clothes, divided into upper and lower parts of human body. First approach, when tested with different image datasets obtained an accuracy of approximately 80% for faces and non-faces and 70% for people and non-person. The second tested using images and videos, obtained an accuracy of about 70% for gender, 80% to the upper clothes and 90% to lower clothes. The results of these case studies, show that proposed methods are promising, allowing the realization of automatic high level information image annotation. This opens possibilities for development of applications in diverse areas such as content-based image and video search and automatica video survaillance, reducing human effort in the task of manual annotation and monitoring.

ABSTRACT The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of electronic picture book and paper version picture book on junior high school students’ English reading comprehension. The research aims to answer the following questions: (1) Do the students under the electronic picture book instruction perform better than the paper version picture book instruction on English reading comprehension? (2) How do the students react to the electronic picture book instruction? During the eight-week study, 70 ninth-graders in a junior high school in northern Taiwan were divided into two groups—the CALL group and the control group; the former group read electronic picture books and the latter group read paper version picture books. Each group had an English reading comprehension test after reading each picture book. The scores of the tests were gathered and analyzed to examine whether there were any significant differences between the two groups. After the study, only the experimental group was asked to answer a questionnaire of three open-ended questions regarding reading the electronic picture books. The data obtained from the study were analyzed from two perspectives. First, the scores of the English reading comprehension tests were collected and a t-test was applied to investigate the significant difference between the application of electronic picture book instruction and paper version picture book instruction. Second, the responses of the questionnaire were classified and described by the researcher to examine the participants’ reactions to the electronic picture book teaching. Results of the study revealed: (1) There was no significant difference between the two groups on the English reading comprehension tests. Besides, the control group performed better than the experimental group. (2) With respect to the responses to the questionnaire, most of the participants showed their interest in the electronic picture books and indicated that they learned more with the help of the computer (CALL). Based on the findings of the study, further pedagogical implications and suggestions for future researches are provided at the end of the study.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine if students’ vocabulary acquisition is enhanced with the picture word inductive model (PWIM), a research based method of vocabulary instruction (Calhoun, 1999). Additionally, this research sought to identify if performances on vocabulary measures are related to performances on comprehension measures. Further, the study examined if the use of the PWIM impacts vocabulary and/or comprehension scores. Finally, this research focused on the possibility of the influence of language status on vocabulary and comprehension skills. The experimental group of 14 second graders participated in the 4-week intervention, while the control group, consisting of 21 students from the other second grade classes, received typical classroom instruction without the intervention. Nine of the experimental group participants and 16 of the control group participants speak English as a second language. To assess students’ vocabulary knowledge, a researcher-generated assessment was administered prior to intervention (pretest) and immediately following intervention (post test). This assessment targeted some of the vocabulary expected to be suggested by students in the course of the project. Also, the Scholastic Reading Inventory was used to test comprehension. The PWIM intervention was analyzed through parametric statistics by examining the vocabulary gains that participants made from the pre-assessment to the post-assessment. Results indicated that statistically significant differences were not achieved between the control and experimental group participants on the final assessment. Within the experimental group, statistically significant differences in vocabulary scores and comprehension scores were noted. Results also indicated that students’ vocabulary gain scores and comprehension gain scores did not differ significantly based on language proficiency.

E-reading is an evitable trend. In recent years, digital publications and e-books have drawn sustained attention from domestic people. However, electronic picture storybooks still have not won the favor of most domestic consumers. Over the past few years, research of purchase involvement has been the mainstream in the area of marketing decision science. Many studies of consumer purchase decisions have pointed out that purchase involvement affects purchase behavior and product evaluation from pre-search to post-search. In this study, the decision processing stage of the EKB model was used as the research framework. Based on EKB model, purchase involvement, and demographic variables, this study investigated characteristics of consumer purchase behaviors and the key factors affecting their purchase decisions. A questionnaire was developed to collect the primary data. The sample population consisted of consumers with experience of purchasing electronic picture storybooks using convenience sampling method during Mar 31 ~ May 12, 2010. From survey participants, 872 responses were collected, and 30 of them were invalid and excluded. The valid response rate was 96.5%. Among the valid responses, 320 responses (36.7%) were provided by the “consumption group” and 522 responses (63.3%) by the “non-consumption group”. The survey focus was placed on current use, demand, and preference for electronic picture storybooks among participants in the “consumption group”. Through statistical analysis of the data, this study obtained the following conclusions: 1.Consumers’ demand for electronic picture storybooks was mainly based on interactivity of digital multimedia which they believed could enhance children’s abilities to memorize and observe, ensure both intellectual and inspirational development, and offer entertainment and education at the same time. 2.95% of the consumers worried that long-term use of electronic picture storybooks may cause negative effects on children’s vision, and such concern was the main reason why they seldom purchased electronic picture storybooks for their children. Therefore, whether preventive measures or effective solutions can be provided to minimize the impact of long-term reading of electronic picture storybooks would be an important factor affecting consumers’ purchase intention. 3.In terms of consumer preferences, 55.6% of the consumers preferred physical books after using electronic picture storybooks. In addition to reading on software or hardware facilities, they also expected preservation of the feeling of reading physical books and presentation of book contents using digital multimedia. 4.Overall, although 63.3% of the consumers were in the “non-consumption group”, 53.8% showed intention to purchase and use electronic picture storybooks in the future. Among consumers in the “consumption group”, 67.2% stated that they would purchase and use more electronic picture storybooks in the future, and 56.6% stated that they would be willing to become loyal customers of electronic picture storybooks. These figures indicate that there is room for further development of the electronic picture storybooks market.

The cosmetic industry in Taiwan is much competitive. To raise market share and enhance brand image, cosmetics manufacturers continue their research and development in new ingredients and new products. Facing a lot of different brands, the perceived risk of consumers is rising. Consumers would search product information through various channels to avoid risks from using products improperly. Searching information on Internet is commonly adopted and is an important information source to decision making. The types of E-WOM are divided into positive and negative information. Many past researches showed that negative comments obtained more intention from consumers than positive recommendation (Lee & Park, 2007; Sen & Lerman, 2007; Morgan, Pritchard & Piggott, 2003; Ramaswami, 2001). Past E-WOM researches focused on the impact of word message on consumer’s attitude. Today, the development of internet changes the types of information sharing and consumers can upload the pictures or graphs to the internet easily. Compared with oral and word messages, consumers have more trust on the message delivered by visual pictures (Mitche, 1986). The design and expression of words and pictures in an advertisement are critical to the success of advertisements. We hope the result of the research could help cosmetics manufacturers to attract more customers by using internet marketing, and to explore the target audience more successfully. This paper will discuss the impacts of the positive and negative internet information on consumer’s attitude to cosmetics. Besides, we will discuss the impacts of the messages with or without pictures on consumer’s attitude to cosmetics. We will conduct a survey to collect information from cosmetics users through the experimental design. The research results shows negative information have more impact on consumers than positive information. The message with pictures hasn’t more impact on consumers than without pictures because of the level of consumer involvement. There are the interactions between “Positive v.s. Negative” and “Picture Messages v.s. Word Message” .

The purposes of this action research on incorporating electronic picture book into online Mandarin speaking class are twofold:(a) to demonstrate the effectiveness of story-telling using e-picture books on Mandarin learner’s oral communication ability and (b) to establish the use of e-picture books as a teaching model for online Mandarin speaking class. The participants of this action research are novice high learners of a language study program for expatriate youth, whose Mandarin oral communication ability declined dramatically after returning to their country of origin. Because the youths today prefer absorbing information via multimedia and are used to interact with people on the internet, the researcher designed electronic picture books, adapted the stories, and made it into a coherent plot which structure are repetitive, and the modified plot fit the novice learner’s level. The researcher used the e-picture books and performed 2 cycles of action research, the first cycle lasted 4 months, and the second one lasted 2 months. First, data on the participants’ preference and language proficiency were collected and analyzed. According to the data, the researcher chose a picture book, modified it into an electronic picture book, and then proceeded to the first cycle of the study. Afterwards, based on the results of the oral test and questionnaire that the learners took, and the reflection of the researcher, the researcher re-selected and designed another e-picture book for the second cycle. The data collection, analysis, and the teaching reflection of the second cycle are combined with the instructor’s teaching journal, feedbacks of the learners, results of their oral tests, as well as the peer teacher’s class observation records. After the two action research cycles, there are 7 conclusions related to e-picture book and online teaching that the researcher would like to discuss. First, combining the use of electronic picture book with a story teaching approach, elevated learner’s concentration in class and increased their learning experience. Second, the electronic picture book material designed by the researcher was easy to use, which lessened the cognitive load during learning new material. Third, student investigation and training, electronic picture book modification, question discussion, and interactive practice are the 4 steps of the teaching model which is suitable for incorporating e-picture book into online Mandarin speaking class was established. Fourth, by repeating stories and verbally responding to homework questions, learners built up their colloquial ability. Fifth, the content of students’ homework and in-class discussion related to real life issues, which served to enhance learners’ memory of content vocabulary and grammar. Sixth, using suitable story teaching approach and questioning strategies increased the interactiveness between the teacher and the learners. Seventh, by using online tools’ function properly, such as interactive tools and circling, the fun in teaching and learning exponentially expanded. In addition, the researcher also had suggestions on teaching activity design and teaching practice, as well as pointed out directions for future study.

The purpose of this study is to explore young children’s reading comprehension of picture books and electronic books (e-books). The subjects were 13 five- to six-year-old children. The children were paired into two groups according to their sex, language ability, the caregiver’s socioeconomic status and the quality of joint book reading at home. Each group participated in two experimental sessions with one session reading a picture book and the other reading an e-book. The sequence of reading medium of two groups is counter-balanced. The study was conducted in four weeks with one session per week. Each session, lasting about 30-40 minutes, consisted of a picture book or e-book reading and following a reading comprehension test. This study analyzed both the qualitative data such as children’s oral responses as well as the quantitative data such as children’s answers to reading comprehensive questions and their arrangements of pictures that come from the story. The results indicated that young children’s total reading comprehension had no significant difference between two reading medium. Furthermore, children’s episode information scores in picture book reading and e-book reading were correlated. Also, the child’s age and verbal ability were associated with total reading comprehension in e-book reading, while the caregiver’s educational levels were positively associated with children’s scores in non-episode information in e-book reading. The qualitative analysis revealed that young children may inquire printed words while reading picture books to obtain information. Even though young children of this age had started to notice printed words, they still relied heavily on pictures to help comprehend the story. Finally, the study provided suggestions for further studies, caregivers and teachers.

This study aimed to explore the experimental effects and the feasibility on the electronic picture book teaching on children’s language comprehension and expression. Hence, this study adopted “nonequivalent group pretest-posttest” experimental design and “participant observation” to observe and record the effects of experimental teaching on children language comprehension and expression and their class performance. The participants of the study were thirty young children aged five, divided into two groups. The theme of the picture books focused on the family relationship and the picture books selected properly for young children were made into slides. Young children in the group of electronic picture book teaching took the teaching activities for five weeks, twice a week. The research tools were “easy-and-quick intelligence scale for children” and “receptive and expressive vocabulary test (second edition).” Besides, the experimental results were analyzed through one-way ANOVA. The results of the study are as follows: I.There was no difference between the two groups of young children in their “lexicon memorization” performance with “easy-and-quick intelligence scale for children.” However, when it comes to the performance on the “lexicon comprehension” with “easy-and-quick intelligence scale for children” and the production of “naming, categorization, definition, inference and the overall vocabulary expression” with “receptive and expressive vocabulary test,” the experimental group performed better than the control group. That is, the electronic picture book teaching has some good effects on young children’s “language comprehension.” II.Regarding the differences between the two groups of young children’s performance of “naming, categorization, definition, inference and the overall vocabulary expression” with “receptive and expressive vocabulary test,” the experimental group was superior to the control group. To wit, the electronic picture book teaching has some good influence on young children’s “language expression.” III.The researcher collected “working sheet” and “observation form” of the experimental teaching, randomly selecting one young child’s data from “grandparent- grandchildren relationship,” “parent-child relationship” and “sibling relationship” respectively through the ten teaching activities, and analyzing the feasibility on how the teaching program was applied to language comprehension and expression. The young children’s positive response to the classes indicated that electronic picture book teaching activities were generally favored by young children. IV.Overall, the teaching activity had great experimental effects and it’s practical for application and development.

The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of electronic storybook teaching on junior high school students’ English listening comprehension and English learning attitudes in Taiwan. The subjects of this study were 54 students from two classes of eighth graders at one junior high school in I-lan County. One class was designated as the experimental group taught with electronic storybook instruction. The other class was designated as the control group taught with normal English curriculum. Both groups were taught by the same teacher, the researcher. The experimental period lasted for 12 weeks, including the pre-test in the first week and the post-test after the experiment in this study. There were three instruments used in the study: ten units of electronic storybooks, listening comprehension test (Revised English Listening Test of Comprehensive Assessment Program for Junior High School Students), the questionnaire on students’ attitudes toward electronic storybook teaching, The collected quantitative data were analyzed by the SPSS, which included descriptive statistics, and frequency percentages as well as inferential statistic t-test in order to identify significant findings and evaluate the students' attitudes toward English electronic storybook instruction. According to the results of the present study, the eighth-grade students who received English electronic storybook instruction performed better on English listening comprehension as compared to the control group. Moreover, the results of the attitude questionnaire indicated that students in the experiment group held positive attitudes in English learning toward English electronic storybook instruction. In the end, the limitations of the study and suggestions for further studies were discussed.

Abstract The issue on discovering pupil’s various intelligences and promoting their potentials through teaching activities has always been major concern of educators. The main objective of this study was to determine whether students who were enrolled in classes using electronic picture storybooks significantly increased their multiple intelligences. This study followed a quasi-experimental research design. Two fifth grade classes in an elementary school of TaoYuan County are the study objects. Both treatment and control classes were in the same school. The treatment group was applied an instructional intervene of electronic picture storybooks, and the control group used the demonstration of application software that had previously been adopted for use in the school. The dependent variable is the posttest result of multiple intelligences evaluation. For both the treatment group and the control group, there was a pre-test score and a post-test score. Only students who completed both the pre- and post-tests were included in this analysis. The researcher wanted to find out whether there was a significant difference between the treatment and control groups on the post-test, after adjusting for the pre-test level, by using a single factor Analysis of Covariance (oneway ANCOVA). Furthermore, examine the consequence of students’ perception toward their assignments. This study acquired three conclusions. First, the experimental group showed significant improvement in their linguistic intelligence and interpersonal intelligence. Second, students express their self-observations of learning engagement and progress. Third, the output of experimental group is better than those of the control group. According to the conclusions, suggestions on the application at other elementary schools as well as further research on practical educational exercise are proposed.

The main purpose of this study is to ascertain the vocabularies recognition and third grade reading interest with the effects of electronic and paper picture books with characters education in elementary school. Two differing picture diagram types: respectively of electronic and paper with matching vocabulary quizzes were employed in this experiment study to gauge the reading level interests of third grade elementary students. Two different classes with a total of 47 students at an elementary school in Kaohsiung participated in this study. The students were divided into two separate classes of an experiment and control group. The first class (23 students total) received English electronic picture books as the experimental group. The second class (24 students total) received English paper picture books as the control group. The electronic and paper storybooks both contained identical information and pictures. A total of four picture books in each format of were taught to each of the two experimental and control groups within two weeks. An English Vocabulary Word and Pictures Recognition Likert scale questionnaire in paper form were administered to both groups respectively, after their quiz study. At the end of the two week instructional teaching period, the following results of numerical data obtained from the English Vocabulary Word and Pictures Recognition Likert scale questionnaire were noted and recorded for a comparative analysis. The results were as follows: Both groups improved in their English Vocabulary Word and Pictures Recognition tests, however the experimental group showed a higher and better reading level interest feedback from the electronic experimental group in comparison with the paper control group. The experimental group with electronic versions objectively learned better in pace as opposed to the control group with paper version. The SPSS numerical data generated will also reflect and support the data feedback results obtained from the English Vocabulary Word and Pictures Recognition Likert scale questionnaire.
