Abstract:
The development of technology has made the world a smaller place where communicating instantaneously irrespective of the geographical location is a way of life. Electronic Forms (E-FORMS) are an easy way to communicate efficiently with students. At present, universities are still using old systems for communication where efforts to improve the system is a lethargic process. As most of these universities are still using student forms manually, the introduction of E-FORMS will speed up the whole process and positively impact in communicating efficiency. In addition, the inconvenience of making numerous visits to the university is sometimes seen as a hassle but due to lack of Information Technology (IT) development in universities, this is the usual pattern still seen at most universities. In this study, the use of E-FORMS at universities is proposed to help students and university staff to communicate effectively and efficiently. As it is still a fairly new concept, the study proposes the many features involved in E-FORMS communication. The Researcher has chosen California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) to do this study. This study consists of the detailed design of the proposed E-FORMS Application System at CSUSB. The design provides a more efficient and supportive system that is easy to use while maintaining student privacy and flexibility. The solution is designed taking into consideration the use of PeopleSoft Enterprise. This proposed system upgrades the existing CSUSB form management system. It is a step forward to a more efficient and the operative system.

Abstract:
The definition of Electronic commerce is the use of electronic transmission mediums to engage in the exchange, including buying and selling, of products and services requiring transportation, either physically or digitally, from location to location. Electronic commerce systems, including mobile e-commerce, are widely used since 1990. The number of world-wide Internet users tripled between 1993 and 1995 to 60 million, and by 2000 there were 250 million users. More than one hundred countries have Internet access. Electronic commerce, especial mobile e-commerce systems, allows their users to access a large set of traditional (for example, voice communications) and contemporary (for example, e-­shop) services without being tethered to one particular physical location. With the increasing use of electronic service systems for security sensitive application (for example, e-shop) that can be expected in the future, the provision of secure services becomes more important. The dynamic mobile environment is incompatible with static security services. Electronic service access across multiple service domains, and the traditional access mechanisms rely on cross-domain authentication using roaming agreements starting home location. Cross-domain authentication involves many complicated authentication activities when the roam path is long. This limits future electronic commerce applications. Normally, there are three participants in an electronic service. These are users, service providers, and services. Some services bind users and service providers as well as services such as flight services; other services do not bind any participants, for instance by using cash in shopping services, everyone can use cash to buy anything in shops. Hence, depending on which parts are bound, there are different kinds of electronic services. However, there is no scheme to provide a solution for all kinds of electronic services. Users have to change service systems if they want to apply different kind of electronic services on the Internet. From the consumer's point of view, users often prefer to have a total solution for all kinds of service problems, some degree of anonymity with no unnecessary cross authentications and a clear statement of account when shopping over the Internet. There are some suggested solutions for electronic service systems, but the solutions are neither total solution for all kinds of services nor have some degree of anonymity with a clear statement of account. In our work, we build a bridge between existing technologies and electronic service theory such as e-payment, security and so on. We aim to provide a foundation for the improvement of technology to aid electronic service application. As validation, several technologies for electronic service system design have been enhanced and improved in this project. To fix the problems mentioned above, we extend our idea to a ticket based access service system. The user in the above electronic service system has to pay when s/he obtains service. S/He can pay by traditional cash (physical cash), check, credit or electronic cash. The best way to pay money for goods or services on the Internet is using electronic cash. Consumers, when shopping over the Internet, often prefer to have a high level of anonymity with important things and a low level with general one. The ideal system needs to provide some degree of anonymity for consumers so that they cannot be traced by banks. There are a number of proposals for electronic cash systems. All of them are either too large to manage or lack flexibility in providing anonymity. Therefore, they are not suitable solutions for electronic payment in the future. We propose a secure, scalable anonymity and practical payment protocol for Internet purchases. The protocol uses electronic cash for payment transactions. In this new protocol, from the viewpoint of banks, consumers can improve anonymity if they are worried about disclosure of their identities. An agent, namely anonymity provider agent provides a higher anonymous certificate and improves the security of the consumers. The agent will certify re-encrypted data after verifying the validity of the content from consumers, but with no private information of the consumers required. With this new method, each consumer can get the required anonymity level. Electronic service systems involve various subsystems such as service systems, payment systems, and management systems. Users and service providers are widely distributed and use heterogeneous catalog systems. They are rapidly increasing in dynamic environments. The management of these service systems will be very complex. Whether systems are successful or not depends on the quality of their management. To simplify the management of e-commerce systems \cite{Sandhu97}, we discuss role based access control management. We define roles and permissions in the subsystems. For example, there are roles TELLER, AUDITOR, MANAGER and permissions teller (account operation), audit operation, managerial decision in a bank system. Permissions are assigned to roles such as permission teller is assigned to role TELLER. People (users) employed in the bank are granted roles to perform associated duties. However, there are conflicts between various roles as well as between various permissions. These conflicts may cause serious security problems with the bank system. For instance, if permissions teller and audit operation are assigned to a role, then a person with this role will have too much privilege to break the security of the bank system. Therefore, the organizing of relationships between users and roles, roles and permissions currently requires further development. Role based access control (RBAC) has been widely used in database management and operating systems. In 1993, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developed prototype implementations, sponsored external research, and published formal RBAC models. Since then, many RBAC practical applications have been implemented, because RBAC has many advantages such as reducing administration cost and complexity. However, there are some problems which may arise in RBAC management. One is related to authorization granting process. For example, when a role is granted to a user, this role may conflict with other roles of the user or together with this role; the user may have or derive a high level of authority. Another is related to authorization revocation. For instance, when a role is revoked from a user, the user may still have the role. To solve these problems, we present an authorization granting algorithm, and weak revocation and strong revocation algorithms that are based on relational algebra. The algorithms check conflicts and therefore help allocate the roles and permissions without compromising the security in RBAC. We describe the applications of the new algorithms with an anonymity scalable payment scheme. In summary, this thesis has made the following major contributions in electronic service systems: 1. A ticket based global solution for electronic commerce systems; A ticket based solution is designed for different kinds of e-services. Tickets provide a flexible mechanism and users can check charges at anytime. 2. Untraceable electronic cash system; An untraceable e-cash system is developed, in which the bank involvement in the payment transaction between a user and a receiver is eliminated. Users remain anonymous, unless she/he spends a coin more than once. 3. A self-scalable anonymity electronic payment system; In this payment system, from the viewpoint of banks, consumers can improve anonymity if they are worried about disclosure of their identities. Each consumer can get the required anonymity level. 4. Using RBAC to manage electronic payment system; The basic structure of RBAC is reviewed. The challenge problems in the management of RBAC with electronic payment systems are analysed and how to use RBAC to manage electronic payment system is proposed. 5. The investigation of recovery algorithms for conflicting problems in user-role assignments and permission-role assignments. Formal authorization allocation algorithms for role-based access control have developed. The formal approaches are based on relational structure, and relational algebra and are used to check conflicting problems between roles and between permissions.

The digitization of manual handling of paper forms is an ongoing project atKarlstad municipality, and their management of vacation exchanges is one of thefirst business processes to be digitized. This process involves applicants printingand filling in a vacation exchange paper form, which is submitted to a departmentmanager for processing, and then forwarded to a payroll administrator forregistering.The goal of this thesis was to develop a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) e-service forvacation exchange management at Karlstad municipality. The design of the PoCis based on requirements gathered by interviewing end-users and investigatingtechnical constraints imposed by current systems in place at Karlstad municipality.The PoC is designed as a Web application managing resources from an objectdatabase, and an account directory. The implementation was carried out usingopen source and standardized frameworks. Open source tools were used for theobject database and the account directory. The PoC was evaluated against setrequirements. Avenues for future work include a more thorough investigation ofthe account directory at Karlstad municipality.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the use of electronic medical record (EMR) systems and risk management in hospitals. It provides a critical analysis of recognized EMR systems and potential failures and discusses six traditional risk management techniques including brain storming, cause, effect analysis, failure mode effective analysis (FMEA), fault tree analysis (FTA), and Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) in addition, to one of the most recent systematic risk management techniques, Systems Theoretic Accident Model Process (STAMP). The traditional techniques are not as well suited to managing risks and preventing failures in modern information systems with complex software that involves human and machine interaction. The thesis introduces the implementation of common traditional risk management technique such as BDD and FTA which is mostly used in nuclear plants, transportation and medical devices backed by a hypothetical example to help and explain the process of the FTA usage. Most traditional techniques rely on a direct cause-and-effect chain and have no clear formal guidance. The systematic technique introduced and used in this study, is known as Systems Theoretic Accident Model Process (STAMP). It is one of the recent systematic techniques developed and used in many sectors including aerospace. This study applied the STAMP technique to the EMR system failure at King Khalid General Hospital (KKGH) in Riyadh. One of the reasons for selecting the STAMP technique is that it is based on system theory and established the risk factors that lead to system failure. It also provides guidance for managing and controlling risk factors. This thesis discusses the implementation of STAMP, supported by examples, to explain how the technique conducted. System failures occur unexpectedly and have the potential to affect health services; they can compromise patient health and sometimes lead to death. The aims of this study are to explore The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia healthcare usage of EMRs and risk factors that leads to system failure and demonstrate the benefit of STAMP for RM in EMR system, define gaps and provide suggestion based on international best practice The study was conducted in three phases. The first phase explored EMR system usage and failures. The second phase implemented the STAMP risk management technique at one hospital of our 8 surveyed hospitals, the King Khalid General Hospital’s (KKGH), to identify and manage risks. In the third phase, the study modified the STAMP technique and reapplied it. The modified technique STAMP Checklist (STAMPC) was compared with the original STAMP technique. We found that STAMPC is much more usable and subjectively beneficial for the hospital that uses a hybrid system. Data extracted using the modified technique provided more useful information to improve EMR system safety, and prevent potential failures. This study addresses the challenges of how effectively RM techniques used to reduce the potential risk of EMR system failures in hospitals. It improves the efficiency of the STAMP risk management technique by proposing a new (STAMPC) technique. There are 3 important implications for both RM and EMRs practice: first, the study suggests that RM and EMRs are integral parts of the management decision-making process; second, they are necessary to improve human health and safety; and, third, RM may minimise the possibility of system failure.

Abstract:
This dissertation consists of four published or accepted journal articles that address some of the key problems in prognostics and health management area (PHM). Effective health diagnostics and prognostics provide multifarious benefits such as improved safety, improved reliability and reduced costs for operation and maintenance (O&M) of complex engineered systems. Extensive literature reviews on PHM for diagnostics of system health conditions and O&M decision-making for complex engineered systems have identified important challenge problems for this dissertation as follows: - Effective diagnostics of current health states based on heterogeneous sensory data from multiple sensors is an intricate problem for condition monitoring techniques to be applied on complex engineered systems, mainly due to high system complexity and sensory data heterogeneity; - With an increasing system complexity, it is extraordinarily difficult to have a well-tested system so that all potential faulty states can be realized and studied at product testing stage. Thus, real time health diagnostics requires automatic detection of unexampled system faulty states based upon sensory data to avoid sudden catastrophic system failures; - Despite successful applications of different diagnostic algorithms in various engineering fields, a challenge for health diagnostics is that an implicit relationship between different system health states and features of sensory signals makes it difficult to develop a generally applicable health diagnostics technique. - Although diagnostics and prognostics can provide valuable information for proactive actions in preventing system failures, their benefits have not been fully utilized for the O&M decision-making process. To carefully address these important research problems, this dissertation proposes four research solutions: a multi-sensor health diagnostics technique using deep belief network, a tri-fold hybrid classification approach for diagnostics with unexampled faulty states, a multi-attribute classification fusion technique to develop a generally applicable health diagnostics framework and a generic prognostics-informed O&M decision-making framework by utilizing failure prediction information in the O&M decision-making process. In this dissertation, different practical engineering applications will be employed as case studies to demonstrate the efficacy of proposed research solutions.

Abstract:

This master thesis is about investigation a power efficient anti-moisture device thatcan be implemented in electronic enclosures in severe climatic environments.First, some of the existing knowledge and previous works were introduced. Then arelevant theoretical background including three main approaches in humiditymanagement are described, comparison between the enclosure heaters and localheaters, some psychrometics concepts that have been used in the project, heattransfer fundamentals, environmental test basics, some humidity and temperaturesensing techniques, computational fluid dynamics, programmable logic controlfundamentals, comparison PLCs with microcontrollers was provided.A series experiments have been performed in order to find the power efficient andmost effective anti-moisture method. Based on the analysis of the experiment data,the local heater system has been designed. CFD assisted parametric study of thelocal heater has been performed in order to find the best feasible design includingthe size and location. The local heater has been built based on the results ofparametric study. Different materials have been tested in laboratory in order tofind the proper material for final prototype of heater. The implemented localheater has been integrated with programmable logic control device. The controlalgorithm has been developed for activation/deactivation of local heater. The logiccontrolled PCB local heater has been experimentally evaluated.In the end the results achieved from environmental test have been presented andanalyzed. Some conclusions on the results and also future work have been discussed.

Abstract:
During the last decade, electronic prescribing has been a point of focus in healthcare industry and is rapidly becoming a standard of practice. It has proven as an important element in improving the quality of patient care, mitigating or eliminating the phone calls back and forth from pharmacies to point of care/health centers. Many e-prescribing systems were developed and marketed but these usually were unsuccessful because of the lack of direct electronic connectivity to local pharmacies and the lack of up-to-date formulary information, clinical guidelines, health plans & services among other reasons. Despite their benefits, the adoption and usage of electronic prescribing systems has been low. In some of the developing countries like Uganda, the problem is even worst. Due to lack of essential resources and manpower, healthcare services have significantly impacted on the productivity and quality of patient care.In an effort to improve, promote and maintain the quality of health services in rural settings of developing countries like Uganda, a high level design for e-prescribing system has been proposed. Design specifications for Electronic Prescribing Management System (EPMS) along with functional prototype are built based on ICT4MPOWER project requirements and previous research and publications in this area.Initially research began with Drug and Stock Management System and EPMS emerged as one of its essential components. In order to strengthen and establish connection between ongoing electronic health record system and drug and stock management development, EPMS component came into lime light. Mare prescription management is not enough to serve patient centric needs. Hence, clinical decision support has been introduced into e- prescribing system to improve the quality of prescribing decisions. In order to develop a patient-centric e-prescribing system that is self-evolving and self sustaining, it is important to update the clinical decision-support system, formularies & guidelines on regular basis. In order to make it usable, it is required to formulate effective health plans and increase associations between pharmacies and other health organizational units. The principal benefit of introducing E-prescribing system into Electronic Health Record (EHR) System is to connect open ended systems to form a strong knowledge base for future.

The current power management technology baseline does not address the increasing gap between system charge performance and functionality needs in a smartphone. This gap can eventually inhibit further increases in functionality and develop a balancing loop effect that reduces smartphone growth rates. Longer smartphone operation duration between recharging is currently being addressed with the introduction of low power circuit chips, low power displays and power management software. This thesis explores options that improve overall power management by looking at the power source and recharging methods. This thesis also explores technology transitions and management strategies that address the different multi-mode interactions between technology transitions.

Abstract:
In order to achieve accreditation for their services, pathology departments must meet international recognised standards and comply with national guidelines, issued by accrediting bodies such as Clinical Pathology Accreditation (United Kingdom Accreditation Service), the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and the Human Tissue Authority in United Kingdom. Objectives: An evaluation of existing Quality Management System (QMS) and implementation of a quality standard and a centralised electronic document management software (Q-pulse) in a pathology department of a district hospital. Method: A service evaluation utilising an adapted version of the Context, Input, Process, and Product model, (with the addition of the implementation stage). This consisted of context evaluation (an evaluation of the department’s decentralised QMS), input evaluation (an assessment of the various types of electronic document management system (EDMS), implementation (the implementation of a centralised QMS and EDMS), progress evaluation (monitoring, documentation and assessment of the progress of the QMS) and finally impact evaluation (measuring the impact of the newly implemented system). Data collection included quality audits, non-participant observation and qualitative interviews. The implementation strategies involved technical support training and feedbacks. Results: The implementation of a continuous QMS and EDMS within the department, using the adapted CIPP model, increased the involvement of all staff in quality matters. It enabled the department to improve quality control processes, procedures and performance. Staff and quality teams now meet regularly and multidisciplinary workings groups have been put in place to continual improve the quality matters. The level of compliance and awareness to standards and guidelines has increased through education and training of staff in within the QMS, and there is an increase in top level management involvement in quality activities within the department. As a result of this evidence of compliance, the department’s Quality management system, was accorded, an unconditional accreditation, by the accrediting bodies. (Clinical Pathology Accreditation (United Kingdom Accreditation Service), the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency). Conclusion: The quality management system is functioning in all the departments. All staff involved in the evaluation processes, judged it to be useful for them and the department. Further research is required to establish the longevity of the implemented products and other modules within Q-Pulse.

The space industry is experiencing rapid growth in small satellites and reusable launch vehicles. Constellations are in development to enable exciting new applications such as realtime video of the whole planet and broadband internet access provided through constellations of low Earth orbiting (LEO) satellites. Existing Earth observation applications focused on observation imagery, such as weather prediction and disaster relief planning, will have improvements in the quality of their products from increased the resolution of the instruments onboard the satellites and a reduction in the time between acquisitions by using large constellations of LEO small satellites. This increasing demand for performance despite the limited budget of commercial space companies will require solutions beyond the capabilities of current electronic space products. In response to the increasing need for onboard processing, Novo Space, a STAR graduate student startup founded by the author of this thesis, is developing affordable electronic components and systems for complex LEO missions that bridge the gap between the reliability of space-grade components and the performance of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts. This thesis focuses on architectural designs for new space applications using Novo Space ecosystem of SpaceVPX products, the result of research and analysis to meet the new space needs for high-performance space electronics. In particular, we analyze three case studies: a payload subsystem, an avionics subsystem, and a subsystem combining both avionics and payload in the same box. With the aim of furthering our understanding of the SpaceVPX standard and its potential for future space applications, a final example of a laser communication system is analyzed in greater detail.

This paper explores the pattern of information overload encountered by majority of email users and examine what steps key email providers are taking to combat the problem. Besides fighting spam, popular email providers offer very limited tools to reduce the amount of unwanted incoming email. Rather, there has been a trend to expand storage space and aid the organization of email. Storing email is very costly and harmful to the environment. Additionally, information overload can be detrimental to productivity. We propose a simple solution that results in drastic reduction of unwanted mail, also known as graymail.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The past decade has seen a huge increase in the implementation and use of Electronic document and records management systems (EDRMS) in many public spheres. The South African government, in this case the Presidency, has now also adopted this system to comply with current legislation requiring government institutions to replace paper with electronic media as the preferred way of conducting their official business. In general, and as is evident from the available literature, it seems that Government organisations have been lagging behind in this regard. The failure to reap the expected benefits from this step by government institutions such as the Presidency forms the basis for this investigation, which examines the failures and successes in the implementation of an EDRMS and the factors affecting this process. The study used triangulation approach in order to arrive at a more reliable conclusion. Literature research has been used as a main data collection method for this study. It also serves as a basis for the approaches to subject matter that have been adopted. Data was also collected by conducting semi –structured interviews with government institutions, including the subject of this research, that have implemented EDRMS. The critical factors that have had an effect on the implementation of EDRMS were found to be of a strategic, social and technical nature. The study also found similarities in the factors affecting EDRMS implementation within government and identifies the need for further research focusing on how these factors differ between various types of organisations.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die afgelope dekade was daar ‘n ontsaglike toename in die instelling en toepassing van elektroniese dokument- en rekordbestuurstelsels (EDRMS) op talle openbare terreine. Die Suid-Afrikaanse regering, in hierdie geval die kantoor van die Staatspresident, het nou ook hierdie stelsel aangeneem om te voldoen aan huidige wetgewing wat staatsinstellings verplig om papier te vervang met elektroniese media as die aanbevole manier om hulle amptelike besigheid te bedryf. Oor die algemeen, en soos dit ook blyk uit die beskikbare bronne, lyk dit egter asof regeringsinstansies agter geraak het wat dit betref. Die feit dat die verwagte voordele van hierdie stap nie deur staatsinstansies soos die Presidensie benut is nie, vorm die grondslag vir hierdie ondersoek, wat die prestasies en weiering wat gepaard gaan met die instelling van `n EDRMS en die faktore wat hierdie proses affekteer van nader beskou. Navorsing van die literatuur is gebruik as die belangrikse datainsamelingmetode vir hierdie ondersoek. Dit dien ook as die basis vir die manier waarop die onderwerpmateriaal benader is. Data is ook ingesamel van staatsinstansies wat `n EDRMS ingestel het, soos die instansie wat hier bestudeer word. The objective of this Thesis was to strategically redesign and transform the supply chain of a series of detonators in a leading Company serving the oil and gas industry. The scope of the Thesis included data gathering and analysis, and the proposal and implementation of possible solutions. The issues addressed included sourcing and partnership strategies and development of systemic inventory management policies. We optimized the inventory policies to minimize the ordering and holding costs while improving the customer service level. For this purpose, we considered the entire supply chain starting from the Company's internal and external suppliers and Subcontractors all the way to the end-customers. By considering all these players we were able to globally optimize the supply chain. The inventory policy used was a periodic review policy for which we optimized the reorder, order-up-to level and Safety Stock levels. We analyzed the effects of the forecasting error and the potential benefits of risk pooling.
(cont.) We also identified and recommended a new push-pull boundary for the Company's detonator products and provided a generic platform to identify this boundary for other products within the Company. The supply chain management system and managerial insights developed from this project can potentially be extended to other products and divisions within the Company.

At the same time, it is essentials to protect the patient security from unauthorized access and maintain the appropriate level in health care regarding information security. The aim of this thesis is to explore current management of information security in terms of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and how these are protected from possible security threats and risks in healthcare, when the sensitive information has to be communicated among different actors in healthcare as well as across borders. The Blekinge health care system was investigated through case study with conduction of several interviews to discover possible issues, concerning security threats to management of healthcare. The theoretical work was the framework and support for possible solutions of identified security risks and threats in Blekinge healthcare. At the end after mapping, the whole process possible guidelines and suggestions were recommended for healthcare in order to prevent the sensitive information from unauthorized access and maintain information security. The management of technical and administrative bodies was explored for security problems. It has main role to healthcare and in general, whole business is the responsibility of this management to manage the sensitive information of patients. Consequently, Blekinge healthcare was investigated for possible issues and some possible guidelines and suggestions in order to improve the current information security with prevention of necessary risks to healthcare sensitive information.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The need for a locally manufactured, cost-effective, fuel management system led to the design and development of a functional prototype. This thesis presents the design, development and full implementation of two functional prototypes. While field tests performed on the first prototype assisted in identifying necessary modifications, a need for greater complexity in support hardware was also identified. In order to comply with the cost-effective nature of the project, it was realized that this complexity could only be achieved via the implementation of a CPLD based system. Using Altera's Maxplus II design software, the CPLD code was synthesized according to the required specifications then simulated and analyzed On completion of the new CPLD based system, the second prototype, one of Altera's megacore functions is implemented and used as a substitute to an external hardware. All necessary modifications were successfully completed and the system was installed.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die benodiging van 'n lokale vervaardigde, koste effektiewe brandstofbeheerstelsel het gelei tot die ontwerp en ontwikkeling van 'n funksionele prototipe. Hierdie tesis dek die ontwerp, ontwikkeling en volle implementasie van twee funksionele prototipes. Terwyl toetse op die eerste prototipe gebruik is om die nodige aanpassings te identifiseer, is daar ook besef dat daar meer komplekse hardeware onderstuening benodig word. Om die koste effektiewe aard van die projek te handhaaf, is daar gesien dat die nodige kompleksieteit alleenlik deur middel van die implementering van 'n 'CPLD' gebaseerde sisteem bereik kan word. With phenomenal rise in world population as well as robust economic growth in China, India and other emerging economies; the global demand for energy continues to grow in monumental proportions. Owing to its wide end-use capabilities, petroleum is without doubt, the world’s number one energy resource. The present demand for oil and credible future forecasts – which point to the fact that the demand is expected to increase in the coming decades – make it imperative that the E&P industry must device means to improve the present low recovery factor of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Efficiently tailored model-based optimization, estimation and control techniques within the ambit of a closed-loop reservoir management framework can play a significant role in achieving this objective. In this thesis, some fundamental reservoir engineering problems such as field development planning, production scheduling and control are formulated into different optimization problems. In this regard, field development optimization identifies the well placements that best maximizes hydrocarbon recovery, while production optimization identifies reservoir well-settings that maximizes total oil recovery or asset value, and finally, the implementation of a predictive controller algorithm which computes corrected well controls that minimizes the difference between actual outputs and simulated (or optimal) reference trajectory. We employ either deterministic or metaheuristic optimization algorithms, such that the choice of algorithm is purely based on the peculiarity of the underlying optimization problem. Altogether, we present a unified metaheuristic and system-theoretic framework for petroleum reservoir management. The proposed framework is essentially a closed-loop reservoir management approach with four key elements, namely: a new metaheuristic technique for field development optimization, a gradient-based adjoint formulation for well rates control, an effective predictive control strategy for tracking the gradient-based optimal production trajectory and an efficient model-updating (or history matching) – where well production data are used to systematically recalibrate reservoir model parameters in order to minimize the mismatch between actual and simulated measurements. Central to all of these problems is the use of white-box reservoir models which are employed in the well placement optimization and production settings optimization. However, a simple data-driven black-box model which results from the linearization of an identified nonlinear model is employed in the predictive controller algorithm. The benefits and efficiency of the approach in our work is demonstrated through the maximization of the NPV of waterflooded reservoir models that are subject to production and geological uncertainty. Our procedure provides an improvement in the NPV, and importantly, the predictive control algorithm ensures that this improved NPV are attainable as nearly as possible in practice.

With the growth of the smartphone industry a commensurate growth in the volume of electronic waste has occurred. Electronic waste is any electronic or electrical device that has reached the end of its useful life and has been disposed of by a consumer. The volume of this waste stream is the fastest growing waste stream globally and has begun to impact the developing world disproportionately as these regions are often at the receiving end of an endless stream of hazardous waste components. The industries that handle electronic waste must be thought of as a System of Systems or ecosystem if real improvement is to be made. The ecosystem can be decomposed into three major systems: collection, which collects electronic waste from consumers and introduces it to the recycling process; pre-processing, which turns electronic waste into discrete material streams for ultimate recycling; and end-processing, which turns individual material streams into raw materials with market value. Improving the overall recycling ecosystem is a critical component of making global industrialization sustainable. This improvement must address both the individual challenges facing each component system in the ecosystem as well as the broader challenges that span the whole ecosystem. The three component systems of the ecosystem face economic, social, environmental, and technological challenges. As a result, the available solution space is broad and varied. However, from an ecosystem perspective, the greatest challenges exist at system interfaces and the greatest opportunity exists in improving these interfaces. In so doing, improved communication between systems and stakeholders will drive the overall improvement of the ecosystem. This communication should generate a uniform set of requirements for how the system should operate. In turn, measuring success in the ecosystem and meeting the requirements requires alignment of goals for each system with those of the broader ecosystem. Finally, a fourth member of the ecosystem-the device manufacturers-must play a crucial role in facilitating this interface management; in this sense, manufacturers have the opportunity to become the de facto architects of this evolving system. As architects, manufacturers could exert more power to realize the changes required while also guiding the ecosystem to more sustainable ground.

Technological innovations have been shown to improve the quality of health information and improve safety in health care systems. The purpose of this project was to offer hospital nurses a more flexible and practical alternative to education and training than the traditional face-to-face method, supporting nurse educators in overcoming many of the obstacles in responding to nurses' needs in the clinical areas. This project used a randomized, 2-group posttest-only experimental design to measure the effect of treatment at a targeted hospital. The experimental group received a new instructional approach using an Electronic Learning Management System (ELMS) and the control group used the site's traditional standard method; both groups completed the Posttest Knowledge Assessment. The study population consisted of registered nurses who had attended the project site's Safe Blood Transfusion Practice program over a period of 1 month. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups' members' gender, age, level of education, or nursing experience. Data analysis showed a significant (p < .00) difference between the 2 groups' posttest scores, indicating that the participants who used the ELMS attained a higher median knowledge (M = 89.39, SD = 9.26) than did participants who received traditional, face-to-face instruction (M = 76.85, SD = 10.628). These results suggest that ELMS-based learning is a more effective method of instructional delivery that could effectively replace many of the traditional face-to-face education programs. Implementing this innovative system will create positive social change on the targeted hospital by improving health care delivery. The application of the finding would support clinical educators to improve educational delivery to their clients at the clinical areas.

Aim: This paper aims to explore and to understand how the E-CRM affects customer satisfaction and trust from customer perspectives in electronic commerce. Method: The research is an exploratory and qualitative study. A multiple case study involving 3 Swedish companies with 12 face-to-face interviews in Gävle, Sweden, was chosen to collect the empirical data for this study. Data were coded by hands and structured in the form of tables in accordance with 7 codes categorized in 2 themes. Coded data were interpreted to investigate the research questions by using the inductive method. Result & Conclusions: This study found that live chat and e-service quality in E-CRM directly affect how satisfied a customer feel with a company in e-commerce, thus affecting trust as well. However, the findings also showed that not all customers could perceive all the effects of E-CRM on their satisfaction and trust.   Suggestions for future research: Other features such as electronic word-of-mouth, internet branding or internet prices are suggested for the future research to have an in-depth understanding of E-CRM effects. Future studies may combine data from both company and customers to increase the validity and reliability. Furthermore, the population of samples could be collected in others cities or countries than in Gävle, Sweden to generalize the result more. The contribution of the thesis: This study contributes knowledge about E-CRM effects in Swedish e-commerce. Some differences related to existing theories were found in this research such as the effects of gender on trust or effects of prices on relationship building. Understanding the customer perspectives on E-CRM effects enables companies to have a proper E-CRM implementation and training for their organization and employees.

Digital libraries are fast expanding into the role of independent educational entities that aspire not only to complementing traditional classroom teaching, but also allow open electronic learning for distance and continued education. These multifaceted roles can be realized only if the course content and the related content management system are versatile enough to be captured into any individual's learning needs. Many studies have defined a concept of "learning object" to address the issues and needs. But in attempting to solve the problem, the definitions have emphasized some aspects of the digital library while leaving the other issues to be solved later. Thus, the whole system dynamics is either weak or too cumbersome to navigate. As a part of this masters work, firstly the current model of pedagogical endowment was investigated. In order to accommodate the digital nature of education, a new modern profile of learning is proposed that allows modular yet efficient transfer of knowledge from the teacher to the pupil. The thesis then proposes a comprehensive learning object (LO) model, along with the associated system model, that will allow complete and flexible integration of content into the modern digital library profile. The process will be user-centric (both for knowledge developers and learners) as well as metadata-centric. It is scalable and interoperable with legacy and existing content databases and display systems. This thesis covers how the LO model is integrated into the core of the library's content development, discovery, and delivery process. The results of the experiment in terms of ease-of-use, flow-control, and feasibility of the model are documented. A beta-version of these concepts has been successfully tested with volunteers and implemented as a part of the Digital Library Network for Engineering and Technology (DLNET) project.

Usability heuristics have been established for different uses and applications as general guidelines for user interfaces. These can affect the implementation of industry solutions and play a significant role regarding cost reduction and process efficiency. The area of electronic workflow document management (EWDM) solutions, also known as workflow, lacks a formal definition of usability heuristics. With the advent of new technologies such as mobile devices, defining a set of usability heuristics contributes to the adoption and efficiency of an EWDM system. Workflow usability has been evaluated for various industries. Most significantly research has been done for electronic healthcare records (EHR). In other areas such as the financial sector and educational institutions there is also some literature available but not as abundant as for EHR. This was identified as a possible research limitation. The general purpose of this research was to establish and validate an overarching set of usability heuristics for EWDM in general. This was approached by conducting a literature review and a survey on 32 workflow consultants from Hyland Software, Inc. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected focusing on the study’s main research question: “what usability heuristics should be defined to ensure the adoption and efficiency of a workflow implementation?" Findings based on regression testing and expert opinions have suggested a proposed set of usability heuristics. The final list consists of: adaptability to diverse platforms, user control, system feedback, intuitive interfaces, visibility on mobile devices, error management, help, and documentation.

This interface enables multiple non-spatial attributes of GRASS map features to be maintained with the DBMS. GRASS alone is capable of storing only one attribute per feature. The interface allows the user to provide both spatial (GRASS) and non-spatial (SQL) selection criteria for any query. Spatial selection methods include picking items from the GRASS map with a mouse, and specifying areas of interest with user-drawn (via a mouse) polygons and transects. The results of the combined query are displayed both graphically (the selected GRASS map features are highlighted in a graphics window) and textually (the DBMS attribute data are shown in a text display window). Options include creating reclassified maps based on the DBMS output, and updating the attributes retrieved by a query.

Aujourd’hui, la compétition croissante, l'expansion des marchés et les progrès de la technologie engendrent un raccourcissement du cycle de vie des processus de développement des produits afin d’en améliorer les performances en termes de délai, coût et qualité. Ce raccourcissement du cycle de vie a engendré un accroissement des volumes de déchet généré et des conséquences que cela peut avoir sur l’environnement. Au niveau de l’Union européenne, des directives ont été introduites, tels que la gestion des déchets d'équipements électriques et électroniques (WEEE), la restriction de l'utilisation de certaines substances dangereuses dans les équipements électriques et électroniques (RoHS) et les directives pour le traitement des batteries usagées (Battery); ces directives permettent de limiter l'utilisation et le recyclage des substances dangereuses nocives pour la santé et pour l'environnement.Ces nouvelles réglementations et normes, permettant de gérer de manière efficace les retours et la fin de vie des produits (recovery process), ont été mises en place afin d'obliger les entreprises à assumer leurs responsabilités en termes de gestion des produits en fin de vie. Certaines entreprises ont montré que les produits recyclés ou réutilisés peuvent être une source supplémentaire de revenu (recyclage des matériaux, ou réutilisation des composants après démontage) dans le processus de fabrication.Ces connaissances liées à la performance environnementale (au niveau des processus de conception, de production, de transport, d’entreposage, de récupération…) devraient êtres saisies, évaluées et capitalisées dans des bases de connaissances afin d’être prisent en compte durant les différents phases du cycle de vie des produits.Nos travaux de recherche proposent donc de développer une architecture de gestion des connaissances (Knowledge Management Architecture) basée sur un Système Multi-Agents. L’objectif est de proposer un système qui met l'accent sur les concepts de « durabilité des produits et des cycles de vie », en établissant des liens entre des Agents Logiciels détenteurs de connaissances liées à la réglementation environnementale et les Systèmes d’Information de type PLM. Ces interconnexions permettront aux décideurs de prendre en compte les impacts environnementaux dans leurs décisions et ceci à chaque phase du cycle de vie des produits
The increasing of competition, expanding markets and advanced technology create shorten lifecycle and the development process to improve product performance in terms of time, cost and quality. These shorten products lifecycle have led to increase volumes of waste generation and consequence impact to environment. EU directives have been introduced, such as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) and guidelines for the treatment of waste batteries (Battery), these directives are used to handle the hazardous substances which are harmful to human health and the environment.These regulations and standards have been put in place to force companies take their responsibilities on managing their products when reach to the end of life. Some companies have found that the returned product can be recycled or reused as an additional source of income (material recycling, or reuse of components after disassembly) in the manufacturing process.Knowledge related to the environmental performance (in terms of process design, production, transportation, storage, etc.) should be captured, evaluated and stored in knowledge base in order to share between users in different phases of the product lifecycle.Therefore, this research proposes a Knowledge Management Architecture based on a Multi-Agent System approach. The objective of this work is to propose a system that focuses on the concept of "sustainability” of products lifecycle by establishing the link between agents, who hold knowledge related to the environmental performances, and PLM system. The connection encourages companies considering the environmental impacts in their decision making at every stage of product lifecycle

This project was designed to explore the definition, design, and development of an intranet-based, electronic performance support system (EPSS) to provide knowledge workers with access to knowledge management resident on the World Wide Web (WWW). Knowledge management is a new field emerging at the confluence of organizational theory, management strategy, and management information systems. This field is emerging in a highly competitive, global environment where knowledge is perishable. It is also an environment where information is abundant via the WWW. Organizations have made significant investments in information technology and information technology-based solutions to remain competitive in this environment. Today's knowledge worker or participant in the knowledge management environment lacks the time, skills and knowledge to explore and exploit the online resources available through the WWW. The use of an intranet as EPSS is a relatively new concept. This project reviewed the concepts of knowledge, knowledge management, knowledge workers, intellectual assets and capital, and learning organizations, as well as the use of EPSS and intranets. An intranet-based, EPSS, code named eTools, was developed as a pilot for knowledge workers in the Options by IBM organization located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. An evaluation was completed to determine if the eTools project met the needs of the target population of knowledge workers. The evaluation found that the target population frequently used the WWW, with a majority of the population using accessing the Internet at least once a day. Usage of the intranet site was lower, in the range of less than once a week; however, the users responded that an intranet was the best method to communicate the project content. Based on the criteria set by the sponsoring management team and the evaluation results, the study found that the information and knowledge requirements of the Options by IBM knowledge workers were satisfactorily met utilizing through the eTools pilot.

The automobile innovation transformed the human life style ever since its introduction to the public, and for over the last one hundred years incumbent technologies have been adopted to improve its performance characteristics. Yet, we need a holistic approach to understand that automobiles shifted from being a mere assembly of mechanical parts to a multidisciplinary system that form the modern automobile. Thanks to the increased use of electronics and software in automobiles, consumers benefit from better gas mileage, more amenities and features, such as comfort, driving assistance, and entertainment. At the same time, stability and performance of automobiles as systems have been facing deterioration, and eventually vehicle owners are finding that features and functions become inoperative over time, causing frustration, loss of time and money. Reports of problems experienced by vehicle owners have stem from casual factors of system defects that model-based systems engineering can reduce or eliminate. This research presents a model-based systems engineering approach to an automobile electronic system design. The work is founded on a comprehensive OPM model and engineering guidelines for electronic control module software design. The purpose of the framework developed in this study is to support development of complex vehicle software that allows flexibility for changing features and creating new ones, and enables software developers to pinpoint systemic faults quicker and at earlier lifecycle phases, reducing rework, increasing safety, and providing for more effective resolution of such problems.

Abstract:
The battery energy storage systems (BESS) installed standalone and with solar photovoltaic installations can be used beyond just storing excess generated electricity from the solar panels. The BESS can be intelligently managed by an Energy Management System (EMS) that uses the BESS resource for multiple ancillary services. The hypothesis in this study is that by optimizing the distribution of BESS resource between peak shaving of local load and providing frequency regulation service through the reserve market additional value can be generated from the already present resource. The EMS designed during the course of this thesis consists of two main parts, first the Prognosis Module that forecasts and makes recommendation for the delivery of hourly service from the BESS with quantified uncertainty and, second the Realtime Operation Module that takes the recommendations from the Prognosis Module and dispatches the necessary service meanwhile correcting for the uncertainty from the Prognosis Module. The Prognosis Module of the EMS is tested through the Öckero Ice Rink case study. In the case study local peak shaving saves 9.5% of the monthly power tariff by reducing its demand component through shaving the peak power of the test day by 21%. The EMS also allows for profit generation by frequency regulation through reserving capacity for three hourly slots within the test day on the reserve market.

Smart styrning med ett Energy Management System (EMS) möjliggör leverans av systemtjänster från batterilagret till elnätet. Hypotesen i denna studie innefattar att optimering av distributionen av ett energilagers kapacitet mellan kapning av effekttoppar och leverans av systemtjänsten frekvensreglering innebär en ökning av resursens värde. EMS som designats under detta projekt består av två delar; dels en prognosmodul som prognostiserar energianvändning för att ge rekommendationer för distribuering av kapacitet, dels en modul som i realtid styr batteriet baserat på prognosmodulens rekommendationer och uppmätt data. Prognosmodulen har testats i en fallstudie av Öckerö Ishall. Fallstudiens resultat visar att EMS som konstruerats reducerar nätavgiften med 9,5% genom att minska dagens högsta effekttopp med 21%. Resultatet visar även att frekvensreglering kunde levereras under tre timmar samma dag, vilket skulle generera ytterligare intäkter.
