Stenberg, Patrik. "Electronic Data Interchange : för mindre företag." Thesis, University of Skövde, Department of Computer Science, 1997. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:his:diva-274.

Abstract:

Lewis, Tony. "Electronic data interchange in the construction industry." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1998. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/11183.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to improve the efficiency of the construction process through the application of electronic data interchange (EDI). This thesis describes the development and application of EDI messages. The messages described are targeted to provide a means for transferring construction specific information during the construction process. The definition of electronic data interchange and its technical issues are first described. The nature of EDI, replacing paper based communication with electronic messages, impacts on the way in which business is conducted, and also has far reaching legal implications due to the reliance of many legal systems on paper documents and signatures. The business and legal implications are therefore discussed in detail. The application of EDI in the construction industry is investigated by means of a literature review. This work is furthered by a longitudinal study of the construction industry's application of EDI, which consisted of two surveys at a five year interval. A model of the information flows within the traditional construction process is developed to assist in the identification of information flows suitable for EDI. A methodology for message development was produced. The methodology was then applied to develop a description data model that could be utilised in the existing bill of quantity and trading cycle messages. The bill of quantity message set was at a stage ready for trial. To determine the issues related to implementation specifically in the construction industry a trial implementation of this message set was undertaken. The official implementation undertaken by EDICON is described. Software was also developed to undertake the trial. This software was tested and proved the message set developed was suitable for the transfer of bill of quantity related information during a construction project. The factors causing the failure of the implementation of the bill of quantities message set are discussed. A number of these factors are considered valid for all construction project information flows. Finally, the use of shared project models to re-engineer construction information tasks is recommended as a means of achieving significant benefit from electronic data exchange in the construction process.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) the computer-to-computer or more specifically the application-to-application exchange of business data in a standard format. Achieving the large savings mandated by Defense Management Review Decision (DMRD) 941 requires integration of EDI capability into Navy automated procurement systems. This thesis examines the use of EDI in the U.S. Navy procurement function, as well as areas for expanded utilization of EDI, current barriers to implementation, and lessons learned while planning and implementing EDI initiatives. U.S. Navy EDI initiatives involve a wide range of projects in the procurement process. The initial targeted are the high volume found in the small purchase area, and delivery orders against established contracts. A major barrier to full use of EDI in U.S. Navy Contracting Activities is the legal and regulatory impediments, resulting from a lack of specific guidance in the Federal Acquisition Regulations. Contributing to the success of EDI are command involvement,. functional area participation, and networking among users.

Pillay, J. S. "The use of electronic data interchange in transportation logistics." Thesis, Swansea University, 1995. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.638533.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to study the impact of Electronic Data Interchange on transportation systems with specific reference to seaport container terminals. With regard to this aim, the following six areas relating to the objectives were covered: * clearly understand Electronic Data Interchange, identify all the related issues of concern and observe new developments significant to the theme; * compile all transport related Electronic Data Interchange standard messages that are currently in use or have previously been used; * take stock of the current state and observe future trends of Electronic Data Interchange use in transport; * gauge the penetration of Electronic Data Interchange implementation in United Kingdom seaports; * identify qualitatively the benefits (both the visible and invisible) accrued with the use of Electronic Data Interchange for container terminals; and, * investigate the use of object oriented methods and then attempt at designing a conceptual Electronic Data Interchange benefits model for a container terminal. As transport is an international business, the scope of the thesis is global. Bearing this in mind, the thesis makes extensive use of primary and secondary documents along with visits to seaports and use of a questionnaire. In addition to the above, Electronic Data Interchange software issues are briefly discussed and an example of a software designed for use at a seaport is provided. As most of the major computer systems in use within the transport industry are either community or industry centred, the thesis recommends the use of the Information Superhighway (i.e. Internet) as a cheap but effective alternative.

Abstract: - The internet is a huge source of documents, containing a massive number of texts presented in multilingual languages on a wide range of topics. These texts are demonstrating in an electronic documents format hosted on the web. The documents exchanged using special forms in an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) environment. Using web text mining approaches to mine documents in EDI environment could be new challenging guidelines in web text mining. Applying text-mining approaches to discover knowledge previously unknown patters retrieved from the web documents by using partitioned cluster analysis methods such as k- means methods using Euclidean distance measure algorithm for EDI text document datasets is unique area of research these days. Our experiments employ the standard K-means algorithm on EDI text documents dataset that most commonly used in electronic interchange. We also report some results using text mining clustering application solution called WEKA. This study will provide high quality services to any organization that is willing to use the system. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, an important component in the enterprise IT infrastructure, must be integrated into the legacy IT system. This thesis studies how RFID technology can be integrated into the existing Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) infrastructure, particularly how RFID can be used in the current EDI exchange process to accelerate the receiving process. After detailed review of current receiving process and relevant data specification, the author finds it possible to replace the current manual receiving process by RFID enabled automatic receiving and reconciliation process. A middleware is proposed to implement this approach.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to explicate the meaning of information systems (IS) success in the realm of a dynamic hierarchical structure model of IS success. Through an empirical study of 382 firms using internal and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems, different characteristics of this model are examined via four hypotheses.
First, using linear structural modelling techniques, it is shown that successful information systems share certain properties common to all systems, in addition to certain properties specific to each class of systems. Four generic factors influencing IS success are identified as (i) output reliability, (ii) system's characteristics, (iii) efficiency outcomes, and (iv) users' requirements. Second, the role of time in the IS adoption and assessment process is explored. By comparing firms that have adopted EDI with those that have not adopted EDI, it is shown that the decision maker's perception of IS success changes during different stages of the adoption and assessment process. Third, the role of stakeholders in the assessment process is examined by comparing perceptions of different managerial groups based on their educational background, management echelon, and functional area. It is shown that different stakeholders evaluate the success of IS differently. Finally, through an examination of various types of evaluation functions, it is shown that IS success is a multi-dimensional construct.
Overall, cross-group comparisons of the dynamic hierarchical structural model of IS success provide sufficient evidence regarding the instability of IS success across time, type of system, and stakeholders involved in the evaluation process.
In addition to the major hypotheses, two corollaries have also been examined. It is shown that user involvement in an IS project has a positive effect on the system's success. Further, the results of the study indicate that respondents in smaller companies are more satisfied with the support and services of the MIS department than their counterparts in larger companies.
Finally, by comparing three versions of the questionnaire used in the study, it is shown that question order has a significant effect on responses. The implications of this finding for survey studies are discussed.

De, Leon Rolando Rueda. "Identification of Critical Success Factors for the Implementation of Electronic Data Interchange." NSUWorks, 1997. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/480.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for successfully implementing Electronic Data Interchange systems (EDI). Today, firms do not consider CSFs as part of the overall plan for deploying EDI systems (Sokol, 1994). Organizations focus on re-engineering their business processes because they want to become more competitive, but most organizations fail to consider EDI as a strategic technology. The most obvious problems with EDI are legal issues, security and auditing, standards, networking, training, and system integration with legacy systems. EDI is one way to optimize the business process and to offer products and services to customers in the most cost-effective way possible. Therefore, EDI must be taken into account in determining the strategy of the business (Hendry, 1993). The research conducted clearly demonstrated that undertaking the key implementation factors is critical to successful project management of ED I technology deployment. EDI should be designed in the context of key inter organizational and Intra organizational CSFs. This study empirically investigated the CSFs for implementing EDI systems. A survey instrument was developed based on the literature research. Cronbach's Coefficient Alpha was used to asses’ internal consistency of the questionnaire. Factor Analysis was performed for each measure containing two or more composite items. Questionnaire items were grouped by EDI Hub and non-Hub adopters to compare question homogeneity. Validity was performed to assess the quality of the survey instrument according to De Vellis (1991) guidelines. The outcome of this study will contribute to the enhancement of knowledge in the implementation of ED I systems and increase top management's understanding of the phenomenon. On a practical level, this research delineated the CSFs most significant to top management and IS managers in deploying EDI systems. The study provides IS managers with guidance concerning situations which are most appropriate for deploying EDI systems. The study also examines implementation of ED I can be better managed and what factors should be considered to achieve a better relationship with internal EDI users as well as with business partners. Appropriate suggestions are given for future research in the area.

Stocks, Gary Francois. "The evaluation, adoption and diffusion of electronic data interchange (EDI) by retail firms operating in South Africa." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/18070.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 176-192.
Two fundamental elements of the retail industry are customer service and merchandising. Customer service entails meeting customer needs and wants, while merchandising is the art of selecting the combination of goods that meets those needs and wants. One of the strategies open to retailers is to move in the direction of suppliers by creating partnerships with those suppliers. The system of Quick Response (QR) distribution embodies this strategy. QR is analogous to Just-in-Time (JIT) manufacturing, where the objective is to speed up the entire order and replenishment cycle. The potential results are enhanced customer service through greater responsiveness to customer demands and reduced costs through lower inventory holding costs and lower opportunity costs (in terms of lost sales when goods are not in stock). Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is an Information Technology (IT) that can be used to facilitate a system of QR. EDI can be used as an Inter organisational System ((lOS) that spans the retailer and supplier organisations and communicates structured messages, such as orders and invoices, between the trading partners. Apart from creating efficiencies in the flow of information between retailers and suppliers, EDI applications can be integrated with internal systems and the entire order and replenishment cycle can be redesigned to improve customer service.

This dissertation focuses on the contribution of electronic communication (e-Communication) to knowledge management. It is based on an empirical survey of knowledge management practitioners in the private, public and NGO sectors in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The major findings of this study are (1) that many knowledge management practitioners have not received any formal training in knowledge management, (2) that for most of them their practices are not informed by explicit knowledge management policies, (3) that there is no culture of sharing knowledge established within particular organisations, and finally (4) that knowledge managers are not using e-learning facilities to keep their knowledge of knowledge management current.

Al-Sudairy, Mohammed A. "An empirical investigation of electronic data interchange (EDI) utilization in the Saudi's private organization." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31105.

Abstract:
Cost, global competitive pressures and continuous innovations are forcing many organizations to rethink the manner in which they do business and to reengineer themselves in order to conduct business with low overhead costs. Information Technology (IT) introduced what today we refer to as the information age or, more aptly, the telecommunication area. Modern IT offers the possibility of effective coordination between suppliers and customers through electronic linkage which speeds up the business process. This type of technology is known as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of EDI by Saudi organizations. The study proposes a relationship between the use of EDI and organizational, IT and pressure variables. The study is based on data collected through a questionnaire distributed to 337 organizations in Saudi Arabia. 125 questionnaires were received giving the high rate of return of 37%. An analysis of data revealed that nearly one-third of the responses, twenty six, (27%) were using EDI and ninety two (73%) were not using EDI. The study also revealed that there were barriers to EDI adoption in Saudi Arabia. These barriers included the lack of professional MIS staff and inadequate training programs together with poor levels of communication and an inadequate awareness about EDI. Beside these factors, there were additional factors that hinder IT utilization. These include shortages of skilled IT staff, a lack of knowledge about computers, a lack of technical expertise by the IT staff on both sides, the organizations "user" and the providers "suppliers", together with a lack of technical support by IT suppliers and poor IT education level. Moreover, the results also indicated that there was a relation between the use of EDI and pressure from customers and suppliers. However, no relationship was found between the use of EDI and the organizational and IT related variables.

The Department of Defense (DoD) has emphasized Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) since 1988 when the Deputy Secretary of Defense issued a policy directive that EDI was to become 'the way of doing business' for DoD in the future. The focus of this research is on how private industry is implementing EDI, and specifically how EDI is being used in the procurement and acquisitions environment. The results from a survey of private industry showed that (1) EDI use will continue to grow in the procurement environment and that most impediments to EDI will be resolved with time and experience; (2) EDI must be adopted by the critical mass before the full benefits and savings will be recognized by DoD and industry; (3) top level management support and a detailed, well thought out strategic EDI plan are mandatory for successful implementation of EDI; and (4) the transaction sets currently being used by private industry for procurements and acquisitions limit DoD EDI opportunities for large purchases. Recognizing these conclusions, recommendations to DoD are then presented.
