Abstract:
The cascaded position control structure is state of the art in modern production machines and machine tools. Since an adequate controller performance of the electromechanical axes is still a key aspect for a resource efficient and high-quality production, this topic is addressed by the paper. An overall approach/framework to monitor and ensure an improved controller performance over time, comprising five tangible approaches is presented. All methodologies were developed in the department for control and feedback control technologies of the Technische Universitaet Chemnitz. They will be demonstrated and also be discussed based on experimental results.

Abstract:
A highly integrated electromechanical actuator was developed in this article, which aims at fulfilling the requirements of high power-to-weight ratio, high efficiency, high integration and low volume in military equipment. Three different transmission schemes were proposed for the integrated electromechanical actuator according to the differences in integration methods. Comparative analysis was conducted on the specific structures of the integrated electromechanical actuator and the categories and performance of the planetary roller screw, which is the key unit of the integrated electromechanical actuator. An integrated electromechanical actuator was designed based on the project requirements. A mathematical model was established and the system transfer function was derived. Based on this, a simulation model of the position loop system was established using the AMESim software and the effects of some related parameters, such as friction, backlash and stiffness, on the dynamic performance of the system were investigated. The related theory and simulation results were experimentally validated by a self-developed integrated electromechanical actuator research prototype combined with the related test system. The data obtained from the step response tests, sinusoidal response tests and repeat locating accuracy tests indicated that the developed integrated electromechanical actuator prototype is of rapid, accurate and stable position tracking capability.

Abstract:
The article addresses the issue of improving the accuracy of power electromechanical systems design. The performance of power electromechanical systems relies on the performance of permanent magnets used, which is nonlinearly dependent on temperature. It is shown that the calculation error introduced by this nonlinearity cannot be described accurately enough with one equation. It is also shown that the performance of thermally unstable magnets can degrade abruptly at a certain temperature, which causes additional and unpredictable decrease in electromechanical system’s performance.

By membership functions, each criterion is given the weight which is normalized as the importance degree for the hierarchy level. Then, the fuzzy comprehensive assessment model is established with judgment matrix.

Purpose: In this study we aimed to investigate myocardial function and atrial electromechanical properties by conventional and tissue doppler echocardiography in patients with primary Sjögren syndrome. Methods: Forty patients with Sjögren syndrome (SS) and 25 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Using transthoracic echocardiography, myocardial performance index and atrial electromechanical properties were measured. Results: Basal characteristics were similar between two groups. Myocardial performance index values were disturbed in patients with Sjögren syndrome (0.41 vs. 0.32, p < 0.01). There was significant intraatrial (16.4±6.4, 5.0±4.5, p < 0.01) and interatrial (30.6±10.1, 15.4±5.9, p < 0.01) electromechanical delay in this patient group. Conclusion: Myocardial function is disturbed and there is significant atrial electromechanical delay in patients with primary SS. This study is the first to show altered myocardial function and atrial electromechanical properties in primary SS.

Abstract:
Electromechanical devices are used in a wide range of dynamic applications, from hard disk drives to levitating trains; therefore any improvements in the dynamic performance of such devices would be of significant academic and commercial benefit. This thesis presents theoretical and experimental analyses of shorted turns (conductive loops inductively coupled to a coil). The effect of shorted turn design parameters was investigated using electromagnetic actuator models, measuring force and electrical impedance, with the aims of increasing dynamic range and stability. It was found that a shorted turn reduces the motor constant at high frequencies; it does however significantly improve the transient response of the total coil current. This would suggest that although a shorted turn is likely to reduce the peak force, with the correct shorted turn configuration an increase in acceleration may be apparent; this would be particularly beneficial for positioning actuators with fast response time, such as those found within hard disk drives. A shorted turn was also found to provide damping, attributed to eddy-currents, which reduced resonance in tests. Utilising an inductively-coupled secondary coil it was possible to control the shorted turn effect, switching it on and off as desired. This could be applied in practice: the shorted turn could be passive in the acceleration phase and active in the deceleration phase, potentially leading to improvements in the dynamic performance.

Abstract:
A general model is developed describing the performance of positive displacement flowmeters. This model allows to predict the performance of any positive displacement meter if 8 coefficients describing the meter design are known. The logic is that a flowmeter performs at a defined pressure loss for a given speed. This pressure loss times flowrate is then energy balanced against all internal loses. Pressure loss and speed are the reasons for leakage. Rotational speed times the theoretical swept volume is the theoretical flowrate and this flowrate, when combined with leakage flow can be used to calculate the effective or true flowrate. The 8 coefficients describe the influence of the design of a meter on laminar leakage flow, turbulent leakage flow, speed related leakage flow, viscous friction, mechanical friction, constant friction, impulse energy losses and ball bearing friction, respectively. This model was applied to a twin-screw type displacement flowmeter which uses two helical rotors which form separate pockets and allow the flow-rate of the fluid to be measured. Based on the general prediction model it was found that for this type of flowmeter mainly two coefficients are the reasons for deviation from linearity. These are the constant friction power losses KC produced by mechanical sliding and the turbulent leakage flow losses Kt ur . When the values of KC and Ktur are zero then the error against flowrate is constant. A complete model of an actual twin-screw type displacement flowmeter was realised, determining all 8 loss coefficients. In order to do so, tests with a twin-screw type displacement flowmeter have been carried out on the overall meter performance, leakage flow losses and bearing friction. The theoretical work includes the determination of all 8 coefficients based on a study of the rotor geometry of the meter and a calculation of the fluid forces and torques acting on the rotors. The theoretical results of the final performance prediction model were compared with experimental results and show a good accordance. It was found that one optimal circumference clearance value can be determined for every different fluid property and flowrate. The flowmeter performance may be increased by minimising mechanical sliding and turbulent leakage flow losses.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the research activities that have been investigated for improving the 3rd order intermodulation distortion products (IM3) and power added efficiency (PAE) and bandwidth performance of microwave GaAs MESFET power amplifiers. Two novel circuit techniques, one for improving the 3dB bandwidth performance and the other for improving the IM3 and PAE performance, were proposed and verified through simulation and practical measurements. The technique of including lumped elements matching networks within the package encapsulation (Close-to-Chip lumped element matching) of a 2GHz MESFET device is described for the first time. Simulation results showed that the amplifier using this technique had a 3dB bandwidth 3 times wider than the amplifier with Off-Chip distributed element matching. The linearity and efficiency performance of a 2GHz MESFET was improved significantly by presenting a difference frequency shunt short-circuit termination across the drain terminal. A 16dB reduction in IM3 and an improvement of 4% in PAE performance was measured on the bench. Success with this technique was further demonstrated with digitally modulated signals.

The complexity of left ventricular (LV) function(s) assessment in heart failure patients is related to the complexity of heart anatomy, but also to the complexity of electromechanical interaction, and to the load dependency of all the parameters that could be applied in clinical practice. Three perpendicular axes orienting the global geometry of the LV define the local cardiac coordinate system: radial, circumferential, and longitudinal. Speckle tracking is the technique of choice for quantifying myocardial deformation (regional and global). Longitudinal LV deformation, which is predominantly governed by the subendocardial region, is the most vulnerable component of LV mechanics and therefore most sensitive to the presence of myocardial disease.

AbstractThis paper presents the preliminary development of a flexible haptic surface in order to produce texture rendering on a large conformable area. For this purpose, Haptic Pixels vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies are actuated by piezoelectric elements and implanted on a flexible matrix. The design leads to square glass plates of 10 $$\times $$ × 10 mm$$^2$$ 2 with a thickness of 500 $$\upmu $$ μ m, actuated by PZT ceramics with a thickness of 200 $$\upmu $$ μ m and a radius of 2.5 mm bonded on a 100 $$\upmu $$ μ m thick PEEK film. Electromechanical characterizations validate the design. The PEEK film between two pixels is exploited to separate them, to obtain the flexibility of the surface and to create an area of friction reduction with a stationary wave. Haptic evaluations are carried out to confirm the performances of the approach on a Haptic Pixel.

Ultrasonic atomization of bulk liquids has received extensive attention in the past few decades due to the ability to produce controlled droplet sizes, a necessity for many industries such as spray coating and aerosol drug delivery. Despite the increase in attention, one novel application of this technology has been overlooked until recently, and that is the moisture removal capabilities of atomization. The first ever ultrasonic dryer, created by researchers at Oak Ridge National Lab in 2016, applies the mechanisms of atomization to mechanically remove moisture from clothing. The process utilizes the ultrasonic vibrations created by a piezoelectric transducer in direct contact with a wet fabric to rupture the liquid-vapor boundary of the retained water. Once ruptured, smaller droplets are ejected from the bulk liquid and are actively removed from the fabric pores. The mechanisms of droplet ejection from this event are related to both capillary waves forming on the liquid surface (Capillary Wave Theory), as well as the implosion of cavitation bubbles formed from the hydraulic shocks propagating from the transducer (Cavitation Theory). In this work, we present an analytical model for predicting the moisture removal rate of a wet fabric exposed to ultrasonic vibrations, and connect the atomization events to a global variable, acceleration, in order to decouple the relationship between the transducer and applied voltage. The acceleration governing atomization is predicted using a verified numerical model. The numerical model is shown to assist in developing ultrasonic drying by means of efficiently evaluating transducer design changes.
