Abstract:
CIVINS
Large increases in the complexity of shipboard electric loads as well as development of electric drive, integrated electric drive and pulsed power systems make manifest the present and future importance of naval electric power systems. The most crucial attribute of these systems is their ability to fulfill their function in the presence of "large-signal" perturbations. Fundamental differences between shipboard and commercial electric power systems make all but the most general nonlinear, "large-signal" stability analyses inappropriate for the design and assessment of naval electric power systems. The tightly coupled and compact nature of shipboard systems are best accommodated by composite system stability analyses. Composite system methods, based upon Lyapunov's direct method, require that each component's stability be represented by a Lyapunov function. A new Lyapunov function which is based upon coenergy is developed for 3-phase synchronous machines. This use of coenergy is generalizable to all electromechanical energy conversion devices. The coenergy-based Lyapunov function is implemented as a "stability organ" which generates waveforms at information teirninals of a "device object" in the object oriented simulation environment of WAVESIM. Single generator simulation results are used to acquire a measure of the "over sufficiency" of the coenergy-based Lyapunov function. Some means of combining the components' Lyapunov functions is necessary with composite system stability criterions. To provide the largest stability region in a Lyapunov function convective derivative space, thereby reducing "over sufficiency", a "timevariant weighted-sum" composite system criterion is developed. This criterion is implemented as a "stability demon" "device object" within the WAVESIM environment. The "stability demon" is tested through RLC circuit simulations and a two-generator simulation. The output of the "stability demon" is suitable for use within an overall system stabilising controller.

Abstract:
Stability of a power system is vital for its reliable operation and maintaining system stability has been a big challenge for engineers over the years. One way of improving system stability is the use of power system stabiliser (PSS). Its main function is to add damping to the generator rotor oscillation by modulating the generator excitation so as to develop a component of electrical torque in phase with the rotor speed deviation. In Ghana, two power stations have their generators equipped with PSS but none of the PSS are activated. The main objective of this study is to assess how the stability of the power system of Ghana can be improved by activating the power system stabilizers (PSS) on the excitation system of some of the generating units. To effectively perform the study the following questions had to be answered.To what extent will the activation of the PSS on some generating units affect the overall system dynamic performance?Where in the power system should the PSS be activated?To what extend can the PSS reduces system oscillation? What improvement can be made to the power system to optimise the performance of the PSS?Data of Ghana and the interconnected systems were first collected, reviewed and all the systems were modelled using PSSE program. Steady state stability studies were then performed to identify the inadequacy in the system during steady state operations. Five base cases including peak and average load condition with and without contingency were used for this study. Dynamic stability studies were also carried out by selecting appropriate dynamic models for generators, exciters and governors that best fit the dynamic behaviour of the generating units in the PSSE program. Appropriate PSS models were selected for units equipped with PSS based on manufacturers’ recommendation. Series of dynamic simulations were carried out to identify the best location and parameter settings for the PSS. Small signal stability studies were also carried out to complement the results obtained from the transient studies using NEVA. There was however a defect in the NEVA program and full results could not be obtained.In conclusion, Ghana’s system is likely to experience voltage collapse during a transmission outage on some critical lines at peak period unless some loads are shed. This risk can be reduced by improving the power factor to 0.95 using more reactive power compensating devices (capacitor bank) at the local substation. Transient stability results also show that the best location for the PSS to effectively damped oscillation is Akosombo GS. Inter-area oscillations of 0.5Hz between Ghana and Ivory Coast systems, local-area oscillation of 0.8Hz between the Akosombo units and Aboadze units in Ghana, were effectively damped within 7sec with PSS at Akosombo GS. It is highly recommended that PSS at Akosombo generation station be activated since their application has a positive impact on the dynamic performance of Ghana’s system. Steady state stability be improved by correcting the power factor at the local stations and line relay settings reviewed to accommodate the present operating condition. Abstract:
The penetration of the electric vehicle (EV) has increased rapidly in recent years mainly as a consequence of advances in both transportation and electricity sectors and in response to global pressure to reduce carbon emissions and limit fossil fuel consumption. Large-scale EV integration in power systems has modified the nature of the traditional electric load such that it should be controllable. Moreover, uncertain power sources and demand pose challenges in electricity transmission grid, leading to significant impact on power system security and stability. Therefore, it is timely that a comprehensive study of the impacts of large-scale EVs integration on power system stability is published. This thesis introduces EV development and typical global research and examines stochastic and intermittent issues which have parameterised in time, location, and magnitude. The work initially develops a flexible EV charging and discharging capacity forecasting model, which is suitable for different kinds of optimisation objects. Based on the proposed model, the main body of this work examines steady-state and transient stability analysis. In steady-state analysis, EV station siting and sizing and steady-state stability are considered. In transient stability analysis, an AC/DC converter-based EV station model has been proposed. EV connections and typical faults are discussed. Critical clearing time (CCT) and transient stability margin are used to assess transient stability by time-domain simulation. Two further topics, using local battery energy storage to meet local demand and application of an EV module for power system dispatch have been proposed as complementary applications for distribution networks and transmission grids.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the stability analysis of an Electric Road System (ERS), which is often abbreviated as eHighway, used for the electrification of the hybrid vehicle. The overall system modelling of the ERS, starting from the sub-station to the critical part of the Scania hybrid truck is performed in the MATLAB Simulink environment. The ERS consists of an overhead catenary line (OCL), where vehicles are electrified by using a pantograph mounted over the vehicle. The stability analysis of the power supply of the overhead line is done by taking into account several aspects of the system. The simulation results are validated with the real test track measurements and the deviations are shown. The frequency response of the system is considered to measure the stability margin. The resonance conditions are clarified and essential variable choke is proposed to damp them out. Also the harmonic components injected from the vehicle side, that are in the closer range of the resonance, are figured out and filtered. When multiple vehicles are electrified from the same catenary line, then there are interferences in between the vehicles. These disturbances both to the vehicles and the overhead power supply system are presented in the time domain. Finally, the results are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the variable choke to increase the stability margin in the overhead supply system. In the frequency domain results, it has shown that the resonance is shifted out of the system operating frequency. In the time domain results, it has shown that the high amplitude of the current and voltage signals are sufficiently damped out by variable choke implementation.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a novel approach aiming to counteract short term voltage fluctuations and transient instability by employing centralized emergency demand response. The objectives in this optimization model include a proposed short-term voltage stability index, inversed transient stability margin and system operation cost. Combined demand response actions of load shedding and load recovery are applied during the corrective period. To reduce computational complexity, load shedding bus candidates are selected based on trajectory sensitivity ranking with respect to the load shedding quantities. Then the optimization model is solved via multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). Compared with existing practices, this work not only coordinates between preventive control (PC) and corrective control (CC) actions, but also considers a proposed user disruption indicator to reflect power supply deviation from nominal demand during load shedding and load recovery periods. A comprehensive three-dimensional Pareto-optimal trade-off solution is computed for decision-making. The proposed method is verified by simulation results on the IEEE 39-bus system.

Abstract:
Transient stability analysis is an important part of power planning and operation. For large power systems, such analysis is very time consuming and expensive. Therefore, an online transient stability assessment will be required as these large power systems are operated close to their maximum limits. In this thesis swallowtail catastrophe is used to determine the transient stability regions. The bifurcation set represents the transient stability region in terms of power system transient parameters bounded by the transient stability limits. The system modelling is generalized in such, that the analysis could handle either one or any number of critical machines. This generalized model is then tested on a three-machine as well as a seven-machine system. The results of the stability analysis done with the generalized method is compared with the time solution and the results were satisfactory. The transient stability regions determined are valid for any changes in loading conditions and fault location. This method is a good candidate for on-line assessment of transient stability of power systems.

Abstract:
This thesis presents research results on the effects of tap changing dynamic modeling on power system mid-to-long term voltage behavior. The modeling of tap changing dynamics in voltage stability studies is first addressed. The dynamic operation of an on-load-tap—changing transformer is represented by a highly nonlinear, discrete and time—delay embedded model, which is suitable to mid-to—long term voltage stability studies. Different discrete tap models and their continuous approximations with respect to time and tap position are introduced. The initial emphasis is on studying the influences of different discrete and continuous tap models on voltage stability properties. Combining the tap changer dynamics with the detailed load dynamics, the impacts of different tap models on system voltage behavior are illustrated via theoretical analysis and simulation. It is shown that different stability regions are associated with different continuous tap models and significantly influence the system/voltage behavior, especially under heavily loaded system conditions. The Lyapunov stability method is used to predict the stability region. Limit cycle phenomena are observed in systems with discrete tap models due to the inherent nonlinearities present in these models, the tap dynamics and its interaction with the load dynamics. Conditions for existence of limit cycles are derived via the describing function method. Cases when discrete tap models and their corresponding continuous approximations result in different and / or similar system behavior are also illustrated. Further, a detailed study is given on. the voltage oscillation phenomenon in power systems with on-load—tap—changers. Two kinds of oscillations are considered, namely the well-known voltage oscillations due to tap hunting and oscillations due to tap— load interactions. The focus is on the limit cycle caused by the tap-load interaction. The effects of tap deadband and other parameters such as tap delay time and load recovery time on the existence of system cyclic behavior are carefully investigated. It. is shown that whether or not the limit cycle can be avoided by adjusting the tap deadband depends mainly on the load characteristics. Trajectory sensitivity analysis offers useful information on the influence of parameters on system cyclic behavior. Next, consideration is given to the coordination of a tap changer, as a voltage control device, with other controls, such as a switching capacitor. Using the results of voltage stability analysis as a framework, a new approach for the coordination of dissimilar control actions is derived for arresting voltage collapse. The benefits of coordination of tap locking and capacitor switching are demonstrated foi two possible situations. Firstly, prior capacitor switching at some buses is shown to expand the stability regioh and provide sufficient time for successful tap locking. Secondly, locking taps at some buses can slow the system deterioration and provides time for capacitor switching. The results obtained not only highlight the importance of tap dynamics modeling in voltage behavior studies, but also give an insight into system voltage stability evaluatiofi and control involving on—load-tap—changer dynamics.

Abstract:
This work presents a centralized control scheme applied to a power system. The scheme has adaptive characteristics which allow the controller to keep track of the changing power system operating point and to control nonlinear functions of state variables. Feedback to the controller is obtained from phasor measurements at chosen power system buses, generator field voltage measurements, and state estimators. Control effort is aimed at minimizing the oscillations and influencing the power system state trajectory through the control of linear and nonlinear functions of state variables during a power system disturbance. The main contributions of this dissertation are the simultaneous introduction and utilization of measurement based terms in the state and output equations in the derivation and implementation of the control law, the study of limits on controller performance as the state residual vector becomes very large, and the simulation of the performance of local state estimators to prove the need for faster phasor measurement systems. The test system is a hypothetical 39-Bus AC power system consisting of typical components which have been sufficiently modelled for the simulation of power system performance in a dynamic stability study.

Abstract:
This thesis presents results on the dynamics and coordinated control of voltage behavior in power systems. The first part of the thesis is on dynamic modeling, with emphasis on tap-changing transformers and load dynamics. For both, highly simplified models are used in voltage stability analysis, despite the complex nature of the devices involved, i.e. tap changing operation and aggregate load. The operating conditions, under which the stability results based on these simplified models are reliable need to be clarified. A study is carried out on the influence of diiferent discrete and continuous tap models on voltage stability properties, particularly when combined with load dynamics. It has been found that small disturbance analysis, especially if based on the common continuous tap model with fixed time constant, is often an unreliable indicator of system stability. Some important differences in system responses with continuous and discrete tap models are highlighted along with the conditions under which they occur. Limit cycles are shown to characterize the system responses with discrete tap models. The limit cycles originate from the deadband nonlinearity embedded in the discrete tap operation and tap-load interactions. Describing functions for the nonlinearity of the discrete tap operation are derived and used to predict the existence of limit cycles. Furthermore, the feasibility of avoiding the limit cycles through adjusting deadband size is investigated. It has been shown that whether or not increasing deadband can always eliminate the existing limit cycle depends on the associated load dynamics. Following this, attention is given to load dynamics modeling. The focus is on use of generic dynamic load models. A simulation study is given on system behavior with generic dynamic loads as compared with the detailed physically based load models which they ap— proximate. Several simple and a more complicated load structures are considered, which include lower voltage tap changers, induction motors, thermostatically controlled heating and static load. It has been shown, for simple load structures, generic dynamic load models, if the parameters are properly identified, provide fairly accurate prediction of system stability behavior in all cases except the one with high percentage of induction motors. On the other hand, for a load structure with diverse compositions, generic dynamic load models have practically useful accuracy for representing the load. This suggests that ap— plying generic dynamic load models will be practically useful in reducing the complexity of system modeling and give reliable stability analysis results. The second part of the thesis is devoted to coordinated voltage control. A general frame work for coordinating optimally a diverse set of control actions is established. The benefit of control coordination is illustrated through a case study on coordination of capacitor switching and tap locking. By careful coordination of these controls, voltage collapse can be arrested with less overall control effort and less impact on the voltage profile than by either acting along. An analytical framework for coordinated voltage control based on coordination of dissimilar control actions is then presented. A 4-stage optimal control scheme is proposed along with detailed formulations. In the first three stages, a security constrained steady—state approach is used to define the optimal control direction for providing stability and adequate security margin. An algorithm based on differential dynamic programming based is then used to optimally schedule controls with different response time and dynamics. Finally, the dynamic sensitivity-based method is employed to refine the obtained control sequence; in terms of finding the optimal switching times for the control actions identified in earlier stages. In the final study of the thesis, application is made of the stability analysis and coordinated control techniques to a substantial physical power system, namely the New South Wales power grid. The algorithm and techniques proposed in previous chapters is tested in a more practical situation.

Abstract:
Increasing penetration of non-dispatchable renewable energy resources and greater peak power demand present growing challenges to Bulk Power System (BPS) reliability and resilience. This research investigates the use of an Internet of Things (IoT) framework for large scale Distributed Energy Resource (DER) aggregation and control to reduce energy imbalance caused by stochastic renewable generation. The aggregator developed for this research is Distributed Energy Resource Aggregation System (DERAS). DERAS comprises two AllJoyn applications written in C++. The first application is the Energy Management System (EMS), which aggregates, emulates, and controls connected DERs. The second application is the Distributed Management System (DMS), which is the interface between AllJoyn and the physical DER. The EMS runs on a cloud-based server with an allocated 8 GB of memory and an 8 thread, 2 GHz processor. Raspberry Pis host the simulated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) or electric water heater (EWH) DMSs. Five Raspberry Pis were used to simulate 250 DMSs. The EMS used PJM's regulation control signals, RegA and RegD, to determine DERAS performance metrics. PJM is a regional transmission organization (RTO). Their regulation control signals direct power resources to negate load and generation imbalances within the BPS. DERAS's performance was measured by the EMS server resource usage, network data transfer, and signal delay. The regulation capability of aggregated DER was measured using PJM's resource performance assessment criteria. We found the use of an IoT framework for DER aggregation and control to be inadequate in the current network implementation. However, the emulated modes and aggregation response to the regulated control signal demonstrates an excellent opportunity for DER to benefit the BPS.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis presents results of a study on the small-signal stability of a single-machine infinite-bus power system. Conditions of generator loading and network impedance are identified that require additional stability support. Two methods of stability enhancement are investigated, namely the power system stabilizer and the controlled series capacitor. Both stabilizers employ the conventional (classic) control structure, and parameters are evaluated for optimum performance using an integral-of-the-squared-error-based method. Results for damping capability versus generator loading and system impedance were generated. The ability of the power system stabilizer and controlled series capacitor to provide stability support is compared. This comparison is based on (a) the ability to provide more damping torque when needed, and (b) the amount of damping torque contributed by the stabilizer.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierin word die resultate van 'n studie op die klein-sein stabiliteit van 'n enkel-masjien oneindige-bus kragstelsel weergegee. Kondisies van generator belasting en netwerk impedansie waar dempings-ondersteuning benodig word, word geïdentifiseer. Twee metodes van stabiliteits-verbetering word ondersoek, naamlik die kragstelstel stabiliseerder en die beheerde serie kapasitor. Beide stabiliseerders maak gebruik van die konvensionele (klassieke) beheerstruktuur, waarvan parameters geëvalueer word deur gebruik te maak van 'n integraal-van-die-vierkant-fout-gebaseerde metode. Resultate vir dempingsvermoë teenoor generator belasting en stelsel impedansie word verkry. Die vermoë van die kragstelsel stabiliseerder en beheerde serie kapasitor om stabiliteits-ondersteuning te verskaf, word vergelyk. Voltage fluctuations which cause lamp flicker tend to propagate from the point of origin to various parts of a power system exhibiting some level of attenuation depending on factors such as system impedances, composition of loads and frequency components of the fluctuating waveform. Maintaining the flicker levels at various busbars below the planning limits specified by the standards is crucial, and in this regard it is important to develop an insight into the manner in which the flicker propagates via systems operating at different voltage levels. This thesis presents flicker transfer analysis methodologies applicable for radial and interconnected power systems particularly considering the influence of induction motor loads on flicker attenuation.In the first phase of the work, development of the foundations towards flicker transfer analysis methodologies is carried out by investigating the stand-alone behaviour of induction motors that are subjected to regular supply voltage fluctuations. The electrical and mechanical response of induction motors to two types of sinusoidal fluctuations in the supply voltage where (a) a positive or negative sequence sinusoidal frequency component is superimposed on the mains voltage and (b) mains voltage amplitude is sinusoidally modulated are examined. State space representation of induction motors is used to develop a linearised induction motor model describing the response of the stator current and the rotor speed to small voltage variations in the supply voltage. The results from the model reveal that various sub-synchronous and/or super-synchronous frequency components that exist in the supply voltage as small voltage perturbations can influence the dynamic response of the machine in relation to flicker. In particular, oscillations in the electromagnetic torque and rotor speed arising as a result of the applied voltage perturbations are found to be the key influencing factors controlling the stator current perturbations. It has been noted that, the speed fluctuation caused by a superimposed positive sequence voltage perturbation tends to produce extra emf components in the rotor which in turn can reflect back to the stator. This concept of multiple armature reaction has been found to be significant in large motors especially when the superimposed frequencies are closer to the fundamental frequency.The second phase of the work covers the development of systematic methods for evaluation of flicker transfer in radial and interconnected power systems taking the dynamic behaviour of induction motors into account. In relation to radial systems, small signal models are developed which can be used to establish the flicker propagation from a higher voltage level (upstream) to a lower voltage level (downstream) where induction motor loads are connected. Although this method can be applied for regular or irregular voltage fluctuations, emphasis has been given to sinusoidal voltage fluctuations arising from conventional sinusoidal amplitude modulation of upstream voltage. Moreover, the method examines the propagation of sub-synchronous and super-synchronous frequency components that exist in the supply voltage as side bands and hence determines the overall attenuation in the voltage envelope. The contribution of induction motors of different sizes and other influential factors such as system impedance, loading level of the motor are examined. It has been noted that in general higher frequency components of the upstream fluctuating voltage envelope tend to attenuate better at the downstream. A method is also presented which allows aggregation of induction motors at the load busbars in relation to flicker transfer studies.In relation to interconnected systems, a frequency domain approach which can be used to investigate the flicker transfer is presented. This approach can be considered as an extension to the impedance matrix method as described in the literature and can overcome some of the limitations of the latter method. In the proposed approach, induction motor loads are modelled in a more realistic manner to replicate their dynamic behaviour, thus enabling the examination of the frequency dependent characteristics of flicker attenuation due to induction motors and the influence of tie lines in compensating flicker at remote load busbars consisting of passive loads.To verify some of the theoretical outcomes real time voltage waveforms captured from a large arc furnace site have been used, in addition to the experimental work using a scaled down laboratory set up of a radial power system.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a method to establish the accurate parameters of stabilisers in the context of power systems with increasing penetration of Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIGs), Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) and Photovoltaic (PVs) using a hierarchical coordinated strategy and localised design. The performance of the tuned stabilisers is verified using modal analysis results and non-linear simulation. This thesis proposes that by using regulated stabilisers, the dynamic stability of a power system with large-scale Distributed Generation (DG) integration can be maintained. SmartParks have been proposed in published literature to support emergent electric vehicle charging. In practice, a SmartPark can be configured as an adjustable load, in charging mode, or a regulated generator, in a discharging mode using a voltage control strategy. In this thesis, damping torque analysis (DTA) has been used to investigate the impact on dynamic stability of the joint operation of SmartParks in power systems with conventional synchronous machines. The analysis reveals that in terms of the local damping ratio, optimal charging and local capacity is best considered during SmartPark design. According to a Phillips-Heffron model developed for a multi-machine system with SmartPark, active and reactive power stabiliser can be incorporated into the SmartPark control loops to improve the damping of the system. Finally, this thesis considers the economic operation of micro-grids by proposing a combined EV charging/discharging model which incorporates stochastic uncertainties in vehicle travel patterns and initial battery state of charge (SOC). The model includes provision of energy storage and renewable generation infeed is used to establish an economic basis for micro-grid operation based on market revenues.
