Abstract:
The main motivation of this thesis is to explore several techniques for estimating electric guitar synthesis parameters to replicate the sound of popular guitarists. Many famous guitar players are recognisable by their distinctive electric guitar tone, and guitar enthusiasts would like to play or obtain their favourite guitarist's sound on their own guitars. This thesis starts by exploring the possibilities of replicating a target guitar sound, given an input guitar signal, using a digital filter. A preliminary step is taken where a technique is proposed to transform the sound of a pickup into another on the same electric guitar. A least squares estimator is used to obtain the coefficients of a finite impulse response (FIR) filter to transform the sound. The technique yields good results which are supported by a listening test and a spectral distance measure showing that up to 99% of the difference between input and target signals is reduced. The robustness of the filters towards changes in repetitions, plucking positions, dynamics and fret positions are also discussed. A small increase in error was observed for different repetitions; moderate errors arose when the plucking position and dynamic were varied; and there were large errors when the training and test data comprised different notes (fret positions). Secondly, this thesis explored another possible way to replicate the sound of popular guitarists in order to overcome the limitations provided by the first approach. Instead of directly morphing one sound into another, replicating the sound with electric guitar synthesis provides flexibility that requires some parameters. Three approaches to estimate the pickup and plucking positions of an electric guitar are discussed in this thesis which are the Spectral Peaks (SP), Autocorrelation of Spectral Peaks (AC-SP) and Log-correlation of Spectral Peaks (LC-SP) methods. LC-SP produces the best results with faster computation, where the median absolute errors for pickup and plucking position estimates are 1.97 mm and 2.73 mm respectively using single pickup data and the errors increased slightly for mixed pickup data. LC-SP is also shown to be robust towards changes in plucking dynamics and fret positions, where the median absolute errors for pickup and plucking position estimates are less than 4 mm. The Polynomial Regression Spectral Flattening (PRSF) method is introduced to compensate the effects of guitar effects, amplifiers, loudspeakers and microphones. The accuracy of the estimates is then tested on several guitar signal chains, where the median absolute errors for pickup and plucking position estimates range from 2.04 mm to 7.83 mm and 2.98 mm to 27.81 mm respectively.

Abstract:
I cannot imagine my life without my electric guitar. It is not a thing. It is an extension of myself. It is who I am. Today not many people can tell about creation of this instrument. An electric guitar is a guitar that uses a pickup to convert the vibration of its strings into electrical impulses. Some of the earliest electric guitars adapted hollow bodied acoustic instruments and used tungsten pickups. The first electrically amplified guitar was designed in 1931 by George Beauchamp. George Beauchamp was born in Coleman County, Texas. Beauchamp performed in vaudeville, playing the violin and the lap steel guitar, before he settled in Los Angeles, California.

Banks, Zane. "The electric guitar in contemporary arts music." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/11805.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1950 the electric guitar has occupied an ever-increasing presence in contemporary art music both as a solo and chamber instrument. Although the electric guitar is still on the fringe of mainstream classical music, the instrument is more popular now amongst contemporary art music composers and contemporary art music ensembles than in previous times. This dissertation is divided into three sections. The first, Section A, is an introduction to the electric guitar, with a focus on its history and role in both western popular music and western art music. Chapters 2 and 3 address the development of the electric guitar, the electric guitar in American popular music and the development of art music repertoire featuring the electric guitar. Section B (Chapter 4) includes the analysis of forty-eight interviews given by musicians involved in composition, performance and musicology for the electric guitar. The focus of this section is on the interviewees’ experiences with and common views, perceptions and attitudes towards the electric guitar’s role in art music. It also contains common recommendations made by the interviewees regarding writing successfully for the instrument, and addresses the nature of previous collaborative partnerships between composers and electric guitarists. The final section, Section C (Chapter 5 and 6), is partly an auto-ethnography. It includes the proposition of useful collaborative models. This section also features an in-depth discussion regarding how technological mediation can affect the collaborative process as well as proposing performance and recording logistics that composers should keep in mind when composing for the electric guitar. This dissertation culminates in a detailed, first-hand account of a successful composer-electric guitarist collaboration so that future composers1, considering writing for the instrument, have a model to assist them in their artistic endeavours. Included in the ‘Creative Work’ portfolio of this dissertation is an mp4 recording (on a USB) of my performance of Georges Lentz’s unaccompanied electric guitar composition Ingwe at the 2012 Amsterdam Guitar Heaven Festival and my Naxos CD recording of Ingwe2. 1 The term ‘composer’ in this context refers to composers who have never written for the electric guitar but are interested in writing a work for the instrument. 2 Georges Lentz, "Ingwe from ‘Mysterium’ (“Caeli Enarrant...” Vii) for Solo Electric Guitar (2003–2009) Performed by Zane Banks," ([Hong Kong] Naxos, 2011)

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of the fabrication and assembly methodologies employed in the development of a proof-of-principle prototype electric guitar composed of laminated copolyester. The objective of the project was to develop the processes and procedures to create an optimized physical and visual bond between layers to minimize vibratory dissipation, thus maximizing sustain. A high speed CNC router, abrasive waterjet, laser engraver-cutter, as well as various manual fabrication and assembly methods were investigated in the construction of the guitar prototypes. The lamination processes explored include low-temperature, heat-assisted pressure bonding, solvent and chemical welding, and contact adhesives. The project concluded with the completion of a working guitar comprised of a laminated copolyester body and a traditional bolton wooden neck.

Abstract:
Streamlined is a musical composition for chamber orchestra. The entire piece was created from four basic musical fragments. These fragments are used melodically and as "roots" for chord progressions, eventually rendering melody and harmonic progression as one entity. These chord progressions move slowly from one chord to the other, through several intermediate chord progressions, metamorphosing into each other through carefully calculated and executed transformative processes.

Turner, George. "Electric guitar performance techniques : meaning and identity in written discourse." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/12685/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an in-depth analysis of selected electric guitar performance techniques and technologies, including the power chord, the wah-wah pedal and finger tapping. Employing discourse analysis, the purpose of the thesis is to identify and understand themes within a wide range of written source material pertaining to the electric guitar. I analyse primarily Anglo-American originating, English-language sources that discuss these techniques and technologies, including archival and online materials, popular and trade publications, academic writing and my own participant interviews. From my analysis, I identify a number of themes that are present within written discourse pertaining to electric guitar performance techniques and technologies, and which also cut across them. The first three main chapters consider three particular aspects of electric guitar discourse. In Chapter 2, I explore the existence of clear invention and discovery narratives for each of the three performance techniques considered in the thesis, concluding with a general list of features that appear to promote the narratives’ continuity and prominence. In Chapter 3, I look at the contemporary meaning of virtuosity and the electric guitar, suggesting that ascriptions of virtuosity are closely linked with the assumptions that underpin aesthetic preference. In Chapter 4, I examine the meanings and attitudes that are apparent in discourse relating to new electric guitar technology, demonstrating that there is a clear yet inconsistent binary between acceptance and rejection of technological change. In Chapters 5 and 6, I theorise more generally about the electric guitar, situating a range of relevant written discourse within theories of late 20th and 21st Century Neoliberalism. I suggest that many of the values and attitudes I identify within electric guitar discourse reflect those of neoliberalism, particularly with respect to the shared value attached to authenticity, individuality, innovation and a willingness to engage with the marketplace.

Overton, William Ernest. "Digital Circuit-Level Emulation of Transistor-Based Guitar Distortion Effects." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/10566.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis was to model the Fuzz Face , a transistor-based guitar distortion effect, digitally at the circuit level, and explore how changes in the discrete analog components change the digital model. The circuit was first simulated using SPICE simulation software. Typically outputs and how they changed based on transistor gains were documented. A test circuit was then constructed in lab to determine true transistor gains. An analog Fuzz Face circuit was then constructed, and physical parameters were recorded. A digital model was then created using MATLAB. Capacitive filtering effects were found to be negligible in terms of the guitar signal and were not modeled. The transistors were modeled using the Ebers-Moll equations. A MATLAB algorithm was written to produce Fuzz Face type distortion given an input guitar signal. The algorithm used numerical techniques to solve the nonlinear equations and stored them in a look-up table. This table was used to process the input clips. The sound of the Fuzz Face was not perfectly modeled, but the equations were found to provide a reasonable approximation of the circuit. Further study is needed to determine a more complete modeling equation for the circuit.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate how electric guitar teachers go about teaching plectrum techniques and what the greatest challenges are for the student. The data collection has been conducted through qualitative interviews with three experienced electric guitar teachers. The study is based on a hermeneutic perspective. The result shows that the three educators largely allow students to choose how to play. The pedagogues mention some common mistakes that the students do, for example: they do not anchor their fingers or hand to the guitar, the plectrum is pushed too far in between the strings and that the plectrum is held either to firm or to soft.

Jones, L. A. "Exploration of unorthodox tunings and muscle memory practice for the electric guitar." Thesis, University of Salford, 2019. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/49778/.

Full text
Abstract:
The following body of research focuses on addressing the use of alternate tunings and muscle memory practice for the electric guitar. An over-reliance on existing muscle memory is commonplace among guitarists and this is often seen as a catalyst by the player to seek out new material using different fretboard patterns and shapes . While this can be effective, it is crucial to realise that often it is the sounds generated by the muscle memory the player wishes to change, not the muscle memory itself. After all, muscle memory provides enormous technical advantages for the guitarist, such as facilitating the execution of fast single note passages or being able to draw upon a range of chord voicings with ease. My research will demonstrate that by changing the tuning, not the muscle memory information, the player can in fact retain existing muscle memory while at the same time completely changing the harmonic, melodic and timbral implications of the sounds they are generating. Changing the tuning also causes the player to develop new muscle memory shapes and patterns in line with their own musical aesthetics. Indeed, should the player find themselves in the same situation with another tuning, there are virtually an infinite amount of alternatives they can try, each tuning being completely unique. This portfolio also addresses issues surrounding notation for the guitar in relation to the use of alternate tunings and muscle memory. I will evaluate different notational methods that emphasise prescriptive and descriptive aspects and assess the most suitable methods for my own research. The purpose of this research is:
  1. Create new harmonies, sounds and timbres that can be derived from unorthodox alternate tunings
  2. Examine the effects changing a tuning has on the application of muscle memory for guitarists
  3. Develop an appropriate method of notation for the above
My portfolio of recordings is comprised of three sections:
  1. A series of solo studies (track 1, disc 1)
  2. Early experimental improvisations (tracks 2-7, disc 1)
  3. A set of developed improvisations culminating in a summative improvisation for twelve guitars (tracks 1-7, disc 2).

Abstract:
This thesis examines the rise of the electric guitar in the United States – arguably the most iconic and successful musical instrument of the 20th century – and the role of George Beauchamp in its invention and development. It focuses on Beauchamp's invention of the electromagnetic pickup, which is the component that makes an electric guitar an electric guitar. The research is based on examination of surviving instruments as well as archival research. An extensive contextual background is given regarding the historical development of electrical musical instruments in general and electric and electrified stringed instruments in particular. The instruments manufactured by Beauchamp’s company, the Electro String Instrument Corporation are discussed as well as difficulties and litigation Beauchamp and his company were faced with while trying to bring the instruments to market. The thesis focuses on the period between the first electrification of a fretted string instrument in 1890, and the conclusion of “the Miessner matter” (a period of prolonged threatened legal action against Electro String and other electric guitar manufacturers) in 1939. The thesis also considers competing pickup systems that emerged in the wake of Beauchamp's invention.

Gilgunn, Paul. "Distillation and synthesis : aesthetics and practice in Rhys Chatham's music for electric guitar." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2017. http://research.gold.ac.uk/22066/.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a critical study of music for electric guitars by composer-performer Rhys Chatham (b. 1952), work that distils and synthesises elements from various genres, primarily, minimalism and rock. I investigate the development, realisation, and import of these works, created between 1977 and 2006, in an analytical, biographical, and cultural account that examines unpublished performance directions, scores, and original interviews with this significant, yet under-explored artist and his collaborators. An immanent sublime aesthetic characterises Chatham’s formative experiences in downtown music, and I explain how this informs his composition, performance, and listening practices (including attendant issues of entrainment, frisson, and perceptualization). This reading is situated within major music traditions of the later twentieth century and at the forefront of a nexus of postmodern radical pluralism, operating across the borderline of the avant-garde and the popular. I use a range of research methods: aesthetics, cultural theory, interviews, musical analysis, music theory, and my own experience of performing several of these works. Part One maps Chatham’s development as a composer and performer through his engagement with modernist, serialist, electronic, minimalist, improvised, North Indian classical, popular, and rock music between 1952 to 1978, to interpret how he distilled key components of these experiences. Part Two outlines how he synthesised these elements in several non-notated works for the electric guitar, from 1977 to 1982, using idiosyncratic and inventive approaches to composition and performance. Part Three provides in-depth analyses of Chatham’s notated music for increasingly large ensembles of electric guitars from 1984 to 2006, to outline the development of his post-Cagean musical language, and interpret the wider import of these works. I argue that the interpenetration and reciprocity of musical elements in these works expand, and implode, pre-established forms of art and rock music. While this eludes ‘either/or’ classifications, per se, this is a particular kind of post-minimalism, with significant components of popular music, identifiable as part of a post-1945 culture that was distinguished by immanence, participation, and subjectivity.

Abstract:
Despite its ubiquity in rock and popular music, use of the electric guitar has only become commonplace within ‘classical’ concert music in recent decades. This increased prominence is partly due to the expanded sonic possibilities that the instrument offers, but also reflects composers’ greater willingness to engage with popular music practices. Use of the electric guitar in concert music often involves some form of encounter between contemporary compositional approaches and popular forms of cultural expression, presenting creative possibilities and challenges to composers, performers, listeners and scholars alike. This research project investigates the cross-cultural implications of employing the electric guitar in concert music through theory, analysis and composition. Case studies of electric guitar works by Tristan Murail and Laurence Crane provide an opportunity to consider how popular music scholarship relating to the electric guitar might figure in analysis of concert music featuring the instrument. These analyses informed the composition of four new works within the included portfolio (provided as scores with accompanying audio/video documentation) that feature the electric guitar or draw upon its related musical idioms, with a specific focus on rock and heavy metal styles.

Abstract: Four-Note Chord Voicings: A Harmonic Study of the Electric Guitar This research project is about the construction and application of four-note chord voicings for the electric guitar. The present work describes the building process of these chords and introduces a systematic procedure for harmonic expansion, taking in consideration the technical characteristics and idiomatic nature of the instrument. This study attempts to organize the main voicings used on the electric guitar to create harmonic cadences applied in the rhythm sections of important styles of Contemporary Popular Music. The procedures studied and utilized for this work are clearly evident through transcriptions and analysis. This work proposes to diminish the existing gaps in the study of four- note chord voicings and contribute to the organization and elaboration of study material for the instrument. Besides, it could be a method to the study of harmony and the building process of the four note chord voicings to the beginners in the college as well as students at basic and intermediate stages

Este conceito foi adaptado para o contexto de aprendizagem musical a partir do modelo tridimensional SDL criado por Liyan Song e Janette R. Abstract: Music self-directed learning is a common practice among young people who develop custom processes to build knowledge from their musical interests. Through these processes they reach their immediate goal which makes this form of learning a tempting option. The electric guitar can be considered one of the instruments that could lead to a self-learning. To validate this assertion, I present the reader nine young guitar self-learners who participated in this qualitative research, a multiple study case. It is observed that, in the last fifteen years, plenty of investigations have been made regarding to how these processes are experienced by self-learners, but little attention has been given to the difficulties that emerge in the course of this path and a consequent motivation for a musical orientation. Therefore, the objective of this research is to understand why some young self-learners seek for musical orientation. To succeed in this investigative process, data collection was made in the digital environment, through semi-structured individual interviews conducted by videoconference, debate groups on Facebook, observation and analysis of the young guitarists' videos posted on Youtube, and records in a fieldnotes. For the data analysis and interpretation, I resorted to the concept of Self-directed Learning (SDL), initially structured by the American educator Malcolm Knowles. This concept was adapted for the context of musical learning from the SDL three-dimensional model created by Liyan Song and Janette R. Hill that originally developed it to the investigation of the online learning environment. The results of this research have shown that all young people have achieved temporary limits in self-learning and sought for musical orientation. But a singular apprentice profile was identified, characterized by the interchange and simultaneity between self-learning and orientation. This profile indicates ...

Abstract:
Musical instruments are not static, unchanging objects. They are, instead, things that materially evolve in symmetry with human practices. Alterations to an instrument's design often attend to its ergonomic or expressive capacity, but sometimes an innovator causes an entirely new instrument to arise. One such instrument is the Chapman Stick. This instrument's history is closely intertwined with global currents that have evolved into virtual, online scenes. Virtuality obfuscates embodiment, but the Stick's world, like any instrument's, is optimally related in intercorporeal exchanges. Stickists circumvent real and virtual obstacles to engage the Stick world. Using an organology informed by the work of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, this study examines how the Chapman Stick, as a material "thing," speaks in and through a virtual, representational environment.

This dissertation results of the research developed throughout the Master’s Degree course within the Art and Visual Culture Graduate Program in FAV-UFG. It aims to investigate de representation of uncanny identities in music videos, starting out with some analysis of Lady Gaga’s videos, in order to develop my videographic discourse in my music video “Electric Guitar”. The main goal is to continue creating subversive audiovisuals, which consist in primary and complex products that contemplate several parameters of approach, exploring sensorial matters and establishing bonds with historical, sociological and cultural issues. The first chapter presents Lady Gaga and her artistic body of work which, curiously, defends minorities in spite of the singer being inserted into the star system. The second chapter introduces concept of “the uncanny”, from teoretical dialogues and, also, addresses their presence in music videos. The third chapter focuses on the study of music video as a audiovusal format, its relevance in visual culture and how they develop through media. The forth chapter reapproaches Lady Gaga’s music videos, selected according to this investigation theme, focusing on their analysis. The last chapter discusses the creative experience of “Electric Guitar” through my goal of reassuring the relevance of studying the uncanny and, also, my attempt to expand music video’s frontiers by employing new perspectives to them, without escaping the plastic aesthetics predominant in pop.

Abstract: The objective of this study is to evaluate the teaching of instruments and electric guitar popular guitar in the degree of instrument disciplines in music with instrument qualification - distance mode, offered by the University Vale do Rio Verde (UNINCOR). For this, a case study was used, whose purpose was to make a data collection for the teaching of improvisation and jazz language content in these disciplines. After collecting the data, it made a comparative evaluation between the recordings of the improvisations of the students were enrolled as the first half with recordings of the improvisations of these same students as were enrolled in last semester. Although the results were satisfactory with regard to evolution, a deeper analysis pointed to greater difficulty in learning rhythmic musical elements or language. To explain these results, we turn to the theoretical assumption of John Anderson (1981), which divides the form of assimilation of content in two types of knowledge, declarative and procedural knowledge and the theoretical assumption Kratus John (1996), which divides improvisation levels that an improvising musician can reach into seven levels. By Kratus theory, we understand that the results of difficulty can be considered as one of the initial stages of apprehension contents, while positive results are considered as a final step or maturation of these same contents. By Anderson's theory (1981), we understand that the footwear content on procedural knowledge are more difficult to assimilate, just because it is difficult to verbalize. After analysis of the data collected confrontation with the theories of support, we conclude that learning difficulties are present in both modes, face and the distance, but that present more evident when practical contents are taught via distance education. Still, we consider valid the instrumental music distance learning, particularly for teacher training, where the demands of practical-instrumental order may be lower if provided by the course some instrumental proficiency, or if harnessed the mandatory personal moments of the sport for activities that favor the practice of a musical instrument

Abstract:
My original contribution to knowledge is a portfolio of work that, through composition, improvisation and performance, expands the role of the electric bass guitar in contemporary Western art music. More specifically, these works address three areas that were hitherto underexplored in existing repertoire: • Works for solo bass guitar and electronics. • Works for bass guitar and ensemble that incorporate the instrument as an equal and important part of an overall sound. • The use of the bass guitar in sonic arts idioms. This research, as well as challenging the role of the bass guitar, also aims to expand the sonic and technical palette of the instrument whilst demonstrating its potential to be a valued part of the modern composer’s instrumental resource. This project comprises: a compositional portfolio of solo and ensemble works; eight CDs, containing recordings of both improvised and scored works; an accompanying written commentary (original musical scores are included as an appendix in the commentary).

Nowadays musical education has taken part of a diversity of themes and points related to multiple contexts of music formation that constitute the contemporaneous society. In this universe the studies about popular music has gotten place and projections which shows singularities that is a part of the musician’s formation who will deal with this phenomenon. Inside of these studies has appeared a diversity of researches about teaching and learning the electric guitar, an instrument which has a strong insertion in the scene of the popular music since the middle of the 20th century. So, the purpose of this work is to comprehend the mainly demands of the learners from the UFPB Music Course and also in which ways they are engaged with the proposals and the musical pedagogical practice of these courses. The study was realized in the basis of an approaching qualitative research that observed collected data like bibliographical and documental researches, interviews, observations. Furthermore, it was used a questionnaire which is more suitable in quantitative researches, a fundamental tool to achieve the purposes of this work. From the results it is possible to affirm that the UFPB Guitar Courses give to the students new perspectives to perform and new discovering to continue and develop their practice like a musician. However it is clear that there is a big difference between the proposals of the pedagogical projects of the courses and the expectations and demands of the learners, not just this, the directed formation for the singularities of popular music and the electric guitar.

This research work is based on a business proposal in the musical accessories industry aimed at people who play guitar and bass, and who are between socioeconomic levels A, B and C in Lima Metropolitana. To investigate and validate many hypothesis, we have created “Mallku”, a business that designs one of the best known products in the industry, the pedalboard. This accessory works by helping organize the pedals that guitar and bass players use, and allows to save time when the users need to record or give a concert. From the first investigations, it was validated that there is great potential to develop this product, that the consumer values handmade items, and that appreciates that wood is used as the main input. On the other hand, it was possible to validate the acceptance of the product through sales made in social networks, selling these accessories to members of bands that are growing and that are already relevant to the local scene. For the realization of the project, various analyzes of the industry were made, which involve the consumer, insights, competitors and other external factors that allowed developing different plans and determining a favorable organizational structure for its viability. As a result, under an initial investment of S /. 39,227.00, we expect to obtain a net profit of S /. 31,158.00 for the first year, S /. 24,077.00 for the second and S /. 23,105.00 for the third.

Abstract: The electric guitar is a musical instrument that was born out of attempts to improve the sound projection of the acoustic guitar, the Hawaiian guitar and the acoustic archtop guitar. The first electric guitars were Hawaiian guitars and archtops on which were installed magnetic pickups that send auditory information to a device that became known as the amplifier. Thus, an electric guitar is only effective as a musical instrument in the total meaning of the terms when it is connected to an amplifier. Over the years, the amplifier has also been made in order to process the sound through built in equalizers, reverbs and tremolo effect. These types of sound processing began to be offered in external devices, which gave rise to the effects pedals. In this way, a network of interfaces had been created and became characteristic of the electric guitar. Therefore, the electric guitar was born as a technological instrument, and is always evolving and being connected to an increasing number of technological artifacts. From this, each player can set up his network in ways quite different and particular, with the aim to establish his personal stamp on choosing equipment and interfaces that best suit their musical technique. Because of the nature of the electric guitar, beyond the musical technique, the guitar player needs to exercise the technological technique, which consists in working on the technological equipments, programming their parameters according to the musical situation. The present work aims to investigate the different ways that each musician makes use of technological artifacts as his expressive means in the context of the pop music market, and what kinds of different results can be obtained as artistic expression. In order to accomplish this, it will be presented and discussed the technologies that have been made available throughout the evolutionary history of the guitar, especially the modern technology that simulates equipments and instruments that is present in effects processors, guitars and music software

Harris, Joshua Kimball. "“Sunken Monadnock”: a Composition for Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, Violin, Violoncello, Electric Guitar, Piano, Percussion, Three Female Vocalists, and Computer." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2013. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc407859/.

Abstract:
Sunken Monadnock is a scripted combination of three modular musical surfaces. The word “surface” is borrowed from Morton Feldman, who compared the aural surface of music to the canvases of the action painters of the American Abstract Expressionists, and contrasted it with the work’s subject, or organizational structure. Composers’ transition toward a focus on surface through indeterminate compositional techniques, according to Feldman, parallels the development of modernist abstract art. “Sunken Monadnock: Composing with Visual Metaphors” is a companion critical essay that takes the surface/subject metaphor as a starting point for analyzing Sunken Monadnock.Other visual metaphors that inspired Sunken Monadnock, and are discussed in the essay, include Shakir Hassan Al Said’s mystical semiotics, Jasper Johns’s crosshatch prints, and Wassily Kandinsky’s theory of abstraction. The circle and spiral, especially, play influential roles in Sunken Monadnock as reflected by musical applications of repetition, rotation, compression/rarefaction, and endlessness. The void in the circle’s center also comes into play. The nature of the work’s formal counterpoint requires an innovative approach to the score, which consists of five sections, each of which reflects a different approach to the aural surface (i.e., to the traversal of time). The two outer sections are traditionally scored, but the three sections in the middle—labeled “Surfaces” are played simultaneously by three subsets of the ensemble. The piece is approximately 22 minutes long.

Abstract: Toninho Horta is a composer, acoustic guitar and electric guitar player and arranger born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1948. In the late 1960s, Horta became famous nationwide as an instrumentalist, accompanying Brazilian artists in concerts and recordings. His music was recorded by other artists. Horta became widely known as a member of "Clube da Esquina", a group of artists that played together with Milton Nascimento in the 1970s. Horta began his solo career in the 1980s with the recording of his first album, TERRA DOS PÁSSAROS. Horta has a very peculiar musical language and is acknowledged worldwide for his technique as composer and instrumentalist. This thesis is a study on Horta's work, based on the analysis of the compositions of his first solo album, TERRA DOS PÁSSAROS, recorded between 1976 and 1979 and released in 1980. This album was recorded independently, with artistic freedom and is a summary of his most famous and recorded songs. The characteristics of Horta's compositions are brought about through the analytical study of the songs and the historical context involving them, considering that 1970s were Horta's most productive years and a very effervescent period in terms of Brazilian popular music. Moreover, this study assesses Horta's musical activities and their relationship with the history of Brazilian popular music, from the beginning of his career to the release of his first album, in order to further understand the characteristics that are part of his songwriting style.

The purpose of this study is to examine the different guitar techniques as well as my own technological development with emphasis on methodology and progression. The theoretical perspective is design theory and the research questions are: What resources do I use when practicing some specifically selected guitar techniques? How can I use these resources in teaching? During the eight weeks, I intensely focused on my own technology development using logbook, metronome and video, with the goal to achieve technological development. The results are presented by two themes: Resources for the qualitative technique training and Resources for the teaching of guitar technique. These themes describe how my own technical shortcomings become visible and managed and how I can use this kind of knowledge to contribute to the development of students' potential technical problems. The discussion describes the resources to practice techniques and resources for student analysis.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate how a small selection of guitar teachers go about to teach chords on electric guitar, as well as how a small selection of guitar students have experienced the phenomena during their studies. To answer the research questions, two experienced guitar teacher and two guitar students were subjects to qualitative interviews. The theoretical perspective of the study was hermeneutic. The results showed that the methods employed by the teachers to a high degree related to how they have been taught and also learned by themselves. Another result is that the combination of systems, music theory and practical musical performance can help guitar students to reach a point of musical independence. The results provide an insight in how chordal playing on electric guitar can take place on a higher level, and also opens up for research within several areas of guitar education.

Abstract: Using sociological concepts of Pierre Bourdieu (1996,1998,2004) and Bernard Lahire (2002,2004,2010) and concepts of sociology of education of Maria da Graça Setton (2002, ,2007,2008, 2010, 2011,2012), the present study aims outlining the "musical sociological portrait" of guitar teachers, eletric guitar teachers and teachers of both instruments. For this, it was connected the socializing process by which each teacher spent during his sociomusical field training in which they act, with their particular ways of acting, thinking, believing and perceiving (provisions) musical aspects of their work, having as main lines of investigation their practice of teaching acoustic guitar and eletric guitar and the relations between the two instruments and their artistic performances that may exist. To obtain the necessary information to conduct the survey, personal interviews were conducted with twelve teachers with any musical path and who matched the research profile. It was observed that the way we act, think, believe and realize teaching acoustic and eletric guitar is shown as a reflection of musical and social construction through which teachers transit, as well as the condition of didactical, technical or artistic emancipation and dependence of the electric guitar in relation to the acoustic guitar also appears as an individual construction in a search for a personal synthesis os contradictions between the especific procedures of each instrument. It equivalent to say that the question about the dependence or emancipation only is resolved inside each person in a unique and personal way and this resolution is the result of a singular musical and social trajectory

Music self-directed learning is a common practice among young people who develop custom processes to build knowledge from their musical interests. To succeed in this investigative process, data collection was made in the digital environment, through semi-structured individual interviews conducted by videoconference, debate groups on Facebook, observation and analysis of the young guitarists’ videos posted on Youtube, and records in a fieldnotes. This profile indicates that the young participants of the research, either in one situation or in the other, are self-directing their learning. The implications of this research for music education are aimed for music teacher to reflect about their teaching methodologies, optimizing them for a better orientation to this kind of learner.

The teaching and learning of the electric guitar have been consolidated from a conjuncture of factors related to the historical, cultural and interpretative development of the instrument. Thus, the formation of the guitar player was developed in different spaces and from individual strategies related to the practice and the social insertion of the electric guitar. Currently, the instrument has achieved new demands and new spaces, also reaching institutionalized dimensions with regard to its teaching. Therefore, we can say that nowadays the educational spaces for teaching and learning the electric guitar are constituted by formalized contexts and several other universes of practice and, consequently, of musical formation. Taking this scenario into consideration, I conducted a multicase study in the city of Joao Pessoa considering three important contexts of teaching and learning the electric guitar today. The investigated spaces were: graduation courses of music at the Federal University of Paraiba, the school of music Studio Musical, a private school that offer free courses of the instrument, and private lessons with a teacher who gives classes in his own residence. Taking this research as a basis, this study presents, discusses and analyzes key aspects that characterize electric guitar lessons in the three investigated spaces of musical formation, especially in relation to infrastructure, content, methodologies and different strategies used for teaching and learning. The methodological approach of the research was based mainly on qualitative procedures of data collection and analysis, but also contemplated quantitative instruments to enrich the understanding of the universe studied. Thus, throughout the investigative work, bibliographic studies, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and participant observation of classes were carried out. From the results obtained, it was evident that, in all of the three contexts investigated, it is common the use of scales and the formation and use of chords and arpeggios as the basis for the practice of the instrument. However, each context presents singularities regarding the use of repertoire as a guiding element of learning, the availability of equipment to carry out the lessons and the systematic structuring of the contents applied.

The aim of this dissertation was to understand pedagogical and methodological practices in the teaching and learning of electric guitar in the CRAJUBAR triangle and to foster those considered fundamental for a teaching of democratic music. For that, it was necessary, besides investigating some spaces of teaching and learning of electric guitar in the course of Graduation in Music of the UFCA, to present a brief history of the electric guitar in the CRAJUBAR under the perspective of the life history of some agents. In order to illuminate the reflections, this research used as a theoretical reference the Ecology of Knowledge of Maria CÃndida Moraes, the praxiology of Pierre Bourdieu and some ideas and proposals of Maura Penna on the democratization of access to art and culture. It is a qualitative research and the methodological procedures adopted are the life history in formation and studies of the ethnographic type. The work presented an interesting organization of the studies of the guitar from six topics: knowledge of the arm, technique, music reading, harmony, improvisation and repertoire; From this organization, the following pedagogical practices and methodological resources can be used: System 5 (CAGED), musical appreciation, âpick up songs from the earâ, transcription in score, composition - in a broad sense -, study and repertoire performance that contemplate a wide variety of genres and musical styles, from popular music to the erudite, use of metronome, playbacks, audios, videos, video lessons and music recording. We also emphasize Shared Musical Learning as an excellent methodological proposal for the teaching and learning of electric guitar in collective contexts.

Abstract:
This essay deals with the issue of what vision electric guitar teachers within the esthetic high school programme have in matters of teaching about sound and equipment, and what methods they apply to emphasize the topic in their teaching. Sound can be defined in many ways, but in this paper it has a meaning of what timbre that can be produced through instruments and amplifiers. The purpose is to give present and future instrument teachers an insight of how this topic is presented in the teaching. The hope is also that this study may provide inspiration on how to develop methods and find tools so that pupils can be able to search for their own sound. The data material consists of five interviews with electric guitar teachers and three observations of three guitar lessons. The study is structured from a didactic perspective.   Earlier research has shown that this topic is relatively unexplored. In literature, however, concentrated listening, composition and exposure of equipment are emphasized as important methods.  Visions of the topic and interaction have been important components in the analysis and interpretation of the interviews and observations with the teachers, and genre approach, education, and methods are a couple of the main subjects within the discussion. The result gives an impression that the students are highly interested in learning about sound and equipment, and that the topic is most common when educating in groups, but still appears to be modestly presented within guitar lessons.

Abstract:
Migrations and technological advances in California following World War II, spurred radical changes in the production and development of popular music, most notably rock and roll. California largely lacked the entrenched traditions of the American Northeast, and in many ways its exploding population translated into the growth of a culture built around embracing newer methodologies, whether technological innovations or radical artistic departures. In large part owing to its increasing ethnic diversity during the economic expansion, California was uniquely poised to become a center of incredible postwar dynamism, especially when seen in the production, consumption, and stylistic development of music. Nevertheless, many of the radical departures in American music were contingent upon the contributions of a small group of inter-connected musical equipment manufacturers and musicians in California from the 1940s through the 1960s. As the United States experienced dramatic changes during the awesome postwar boom, Californian artists, merchants, and equipment makers exploited opportunities, making the Golden State the national trendsetter in musical developments both technological and stylistic. In particular, the invention, development, and further refinement of solid bodied electric guitars and basses in Southern California permanently changed how music would be made. The transformation of West Coast music would produce differing reactions nationally, while foreign developments would impact California, challenging its hegemony.

Abstract:
Guitarists using effect pedals to alter the way their guitar sounds often face the problem of loud noise when they want their guitars to be completely silent. This can be the result of using a distortion pedal which works well when you’re playing, but not when you have a brief pause. This project focuses on developing a complete prototype of a distortion pedal that has an adjustable mute circuit, also known as a noise gate, built into it. The project pedal consists of some functions which commercially available effect pedals have; 6.3 mm input jack, on and off switch, both a battery connector and a DC-jack, and adjustable knobs for the different effects like drive, tone and volume. The distortion circuit is inspired by the BOSS SD1 SUPER OVERDRIVE pedal and the muting function is constructed with Junction Field Effect Transistors. Two prototypes were constructed; one with hole mounted components, and one with surface mounted components. They both work largely as imagined. When the guitar is played, the desired distorted sound can be heard and adjusted with a drive, tone and volume control. When the guitar is not played, all unwanted noise is completely muted. A sensitivity adjusting knob allows for different signal strengths to be muted. The chosen method for muting the signal introduces a short and faint unwanted noise during the muting process. While it would have been better to eliminate this noise too, the prototype introduces something new and helpful for guitarists using distortion pedals. With more work, this way of integrating a mute circuit in distortion pedals could potentially set a new standard.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to find out if it is possible to become better at sight-reading melodies during a shorter period, in this case eight weeks with 15 minutes of daily training. With a video recorder, I have documented a selection of daily training sessions based on a book that specifically focuses on sight-reading melodies. Furthermore, I have written a logbook to document my personal experiences during the process. Theoretical perspective is design theory. The results shows how different resources are handled, and the learning progression of the process are described. It appears that I during this period, have become better at sight-reading melodies and it is also clear that I use bodily resources quite a lot while practicing sight-reading. Lastly, in the last chapter I discuss the preconditions given by the book and what resources that has been created during my learning period.

Abstract: This research is based on the thesis, that the piano playing style, of Johnny Alf and João Donato, in the piano instrumental trio performance (with double-bass and drums and/or percussion), can be defined as a link, that could be perceived as a guide of how to play the Brazilian Popular Music from the second half of the last century to our days. This kind of music finds its roots in samba, however is strongly affected by the jazz influences. Our goal is to define the link among Alf and Donato, and demonstrate how it can provide valuable references to the guitarist, within the guitar trio situation, as a source for a reevaluation of his directions on playing the Brazilian Popular Music

Abstract:
The study aims to gain insight into how guitar teachers working to get their students to learn musical notation. In the background chapter, previous research in music reading and notation is shown. As a theoretical basis the design theory perspective is used, which focuses on how people use different characters to design their communication and learning. The study is based on a qualitative research with video observation as method. Six electric guitar teachers at different arts schools have been observed using video recording. The recorded material was then transcribed and analysed with a focus on the character-building resources teachers use in their teaching. The result shows that teachers use speech, voice, body, instrument, musical terms and sounding backing tracks to teach traditional music notation and/or tablature for students. In the discussion two comprehensive teaching methods that have been highlighted by the teachers is discussed: a traditional sight-reading and music theory based teaching and a tablature and ear based instruction.
