Full textThe theory of Quantum Mechanics led to the discovery of many phenomena that were previously hidden by its probabilistic nature. In particular, Quantum Mechanics brought to light the so-called wave-particle duality behavior of extremely small objects. This behavior is typically obtained in isolated systems, therefore experiments where particles do not interact with the environment are basic to study quantum systems and quantum phenomena. Ultracold atoms are systems where atoms are cooled down to temperatures of the order of nanokelvin and, in general, kept in ultrahigh vacuum chambers, such that they can be studied in a highly controlled environment. Within this field, Bose—Einstein condensates (BECs) are a particular appealing state of matter where all the particles of an ultracold bose gas, macroscopically occupy a single quantum state. This behavior makes BECs ideal for studying quantum phenomena at a macroscopic scale. In this thesis, we investigate systems where, a quantum phenomenon that has no analogue in classical mechanics, the quantum tunneling is, or has the potential to be, the mechanism that triggers the dynamics. A tunneling event occurs whenever a massive particle is able to access a classically forbidden region of space without having the necessary kinetic energy to do it. Note that this phenomenon can arise in different scenarios, for instance a particle can tunnel when colliding with a potential barrier or it can simply oscillate between two separated wells separated by a potential barrier. In this context, first, we consider the implementation of a matter-wave bright soliton interferometer whose splitting mechanism is based on tunneling through a finite width barrier. We use bright matter-wave solitons in one dimensional BECs as they present properties, such as their dispersionless behavior, that are ideal for interferometric purposes. As mentioned previously, we are also interested on systems where tunneling occurs between neighboring potentials. For those cases, in order to estimate the tunneling amplitudes that couple the eigenstates of the local traps, the analytical density profiles of the eigenstates are required, especially around the low density regions. In particular, we study the density profiles of harmonically trapped two-component BECs within the miscible phase. The analytical formulation of the density profiles of each component around the low density regions is given by means of universal equations. We then turn our attention to the dynamics of single atoms in tunnel-coupled potentials. First, we study spatial adiabatic passage processes as a robust and efficient technique to transport and load single atoms between cylindrically symmetric concentric potentials. The two processes investigated are based on the matter-wave analogues of the rapid adiabatic passage and of the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. With these techniques, we are able to transport the atom between two and three rings and to load an ultracold atom from a harmonic potential to a concentric ring. Next, we continue investigating ring potentials, but instead of using concentric rings, we use sided-coupled rings and we demonstrate that in this system, complex tunneling amplitudes appear naturally in the dynamics of single atom angular momentum states. We also propose to use this feature to engineer spatial dark states through quantum interference. Finally, we demonstrate how spatial dark states can be used to create edge-like states in an optical ribbon either for the manifold of ground states of the traps forming the ribbon or for states carrying orbital angular momentum. We show that these states are robust and that can be extended to other geometries. In addition, we suggest to use the winding number associated to the angular momentum as a synthetic dimension opening the possibility to quantum simulate three dimensional systems with two dimensional lattices.

Full textThis thesis tries to open a new focus of discussion around the limits of science and philosophy. But we have centred this problem in the controversy between Einstein and Bergson about time. Our thesis maintains that a study from a discursive dimension it's necessary if we want to understand this controversy. We think that the constitution of sense depends of a discursive process in philosophy. Also, we think that it's possible to apprehend an important part of the linguistics supports of this speculative activity. We want to understand the linguistics operations that permit the development of the bergsonian writing and we try to prove that the Bergson's detractors don't understand the discursive background proposed by the text. Their perspective is the perspective of another ideological ambit: the science's ambit, whit an own linguistic universe. Bergson criticizes the science's concept of time, the theory of relativity represents the culmination of this conception and it's opposed to the Bergson's duration. The science's time is placed at the same level that the space like a fourth dimension of space. The scientific method adulterates, according to Bergson, the reality because it is interested in something that can be expressed by concepts. That's why this thesis explains that the science progresses thanks to the concepts more than to the theories. From this epistemological perspective, we can understand the "implicit metaphysic" of these concepts. In order to illustrate our thesis, we pay on attention to the concept of simultaneity and to the scientific method that presupposes a reality divisible in stable and autonomous moments. The conclusion is that it's necessary to understand the controversy between Einstein and Bergson like a debate between ontological and epistemological postures completely divergents. Einstein leaves the scientific ambit when he uses the verbal language and dispenses with the symbols. Nevertheless, when he utilizes the verbal language, the scientific concepts lose the guaranty that they had in the ambit of scientific ambit. Then, the controversy about time becomes a philosophical controversy.

Full textIn this thesis we consider the Einstein-Vlasov system, which models a system of particles within the framework of general relativity, and where collisions between the particles are assumed to be sufficiently rare to be neglected. Here the particles are stars, galaxies or even clusters of galaxies, which interact by the gravitational field generated collectively by the particles.
The thesis consists of three papers, and the first two are devoted to cylindrically symmetric spacetimes and the third treats the spherically symmetric case.
In the first paper the time-dependent Einstein-Vlasov system with cylindrical symmetry is considered. We prove global existence in the so called polarized case under the assumption that the particles never reach a neighborhood of the axis of symmetry. In the more general case of a non-polarized metric we need the additional assumption that the derivatives of certain metric components are bounded in a vicinity of the axis of symmetry to obtain global existence.
The second paper of the thesis considers static cylindrical spacetimes. In this case we prove global existence in space and also that the solutions have finite extension in two of the three spatial dimensions. It then follows that it is possible to extend the spacetime by gluing it with a Levi-Civita spacetime, i.e. the most general vacuum solution of the static cylindrically symmetric Einstein equations.
In the third and last paper, which is a joint work with C. Uggla and M. Heinzle, the static spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system is studied. We introduce a new method by rewriting the system as an autonomous dynamical system on a state space with compact closure. In this way we are able to improve earlier results and enlarge the class of distribution functions which give rise to steady states with finite mass and finite extension.

Full textThe role of space-time torsion in General Relativity is reviewed in this thesis. Through the analysis of volume forms in affine manifolds, it will be shown that the usual riemannian volume element is no! compatible with connections with non-vanishing torsion. A new volume element is proposed and used in the lagrangian formulation for Einstein-Cartan theory of gravity. By this new model, torsion can propagate and gauge fields can interact with torsion without breaking of gauge invariance. The new volume element can also provide a geometrical interpretation for the dilaton gravity by means of the non-riemannian quantities of space-time.

Full textIn this thesis, the notion of Kähler-Einstein metric is central. After the pioneering works of Aubin and Yau (among others) who proved the existence of Kähler metrics with negative or zero Ricci curvature, mathematicians started to focus on various generalizations of these results. We will present two such aspects and an application in algebraic geometry. First, we will show the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics with prescribed singularities (of cone or Poincaré type) along a simple normal crossing divisor. Then, we will construct Kähler-Einstein metrics on singular varieties and more precisely with semi-log canonical singularities (joint work with Robert Berman); we will further analyze the singularities of those metrics attached to Kawamata log terminal (klt) pairs on the log-smooth locus, which will make a connection with the first part. Finally, we will mention an application of those techniques to the semi-stability or generic semipositivity of the tangent sheaf of varieties with log canonical singularities

Full textRecently, cooling, trapping and manipulation of neutral atoms and ions has become an especially active field of quantum physics. The main motivation for the cooling is to reduce motional effects in high precision measurements including spectroscopy, atomic clocks and matter interferometry. The spectrum of applications of these quantum devices cover a broad area from geodesy, through metrology up to addressing the fundamental questions in physics, as for instance testing the Einstein’s equivalence principle. However, the unprecedented precision of the quantum sensors is limited in terrestial laboratories. Freezing atomic motion can be nowadays put to the limit at which gravity becomes a major perturbation in a system. Gravity can significantly affect and disturb the trapping potential. This limits the use of ultra-shallow traps for low energetic particles. Moreover, free particles are accelerated by gravitational force, which substantially limits the observation time. Targeting the long-term goal of studying cold quantum gases on a space platform, we currently focus on the implementation of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) experiment under microgravity conditions at the drop tower in Bremen. Special challenges in the construction of the experimental setup are posed by a low volume of the drop capsule as well as critical decelerations up to 50g during recapture at the bottom of the tower. All mechanical and electronic components were thus been designed with stringent demands on miniaturization and mechanical stability. This work reports on the observation of a BEC released from an ultra-shallow magnetic potential and freely expanding for one second. Both, the low trapping frequency and long expansion time are not achievable in any earthbound laboratory. This unprecedented time of free evolution leads to new possibilities for the study of BEC-coherence. It can also be applied to enhance the sensitivity of inertial quantum sensors based on ultra-cold matter waves.
