Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique (EFIT), originally developed by Fellinger et al.,1–3 represents a stable and efficient numerical code to model elastic wave propagation in linearly-elastic isotropic and anisotropic, homogeneous and heterogeneous as well as dissipative and nondissipative media. In previous works, the FIT discretization of the basic equations of linear elasticity, Hooke's law and Cauchy's equation of motion, was exclusively carried out in Cartesian coordinates. For problems in cylindrical geometries it is more suitable to use cylindrical coordinates. By that, axisymmetric problems can be treated in a two-dimensional staggered grid in the r,z-plane. The paper presents an EFIT version for axisymmetric problems in cylindrical coordinates called Cylindrical EFIT (CEFIT). After demonstrating the accuracy of the numerical code by a comparison between simulation results and analytical solutions, different examples of application are given. These examples include modeling of sound fields of ultrasonic transducers, thermoelastic laser sources, geophysical borehole probes, impact-echo measurements in layered media, and load simulations of the European Spallation Source (ESS) mercury target.

Abstract:
A new tool for the exploration and diagnosis of the internal magnetic field of plasmas in the DIII-D tokamak in the form of a constraint on the EFIT (Equilibrium Fitting) Grad–Shafranov code based on the Faraday-effect Radial Interferometer-Polarimeter (RIP) diagnostic is presented, including description, verification, and sample application. The physics underlying the diagnostic and its implementation into EFIT are discussed, and the results showing the verification of the model are given, and the model’s limitations are discussed. The influence of the diagnostic’s input on the resulting equilibrium parameters is characterized. The effect of electron density profile refinement is evaluated and found to be negligible. A sample application of the diagnostic is shown, indicating that the RIP constraint has similar effects on the equilibrium as motional Stark effect constraints do.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
ObjectiveTo conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial to determine whether participation in a group-based structured telehealth intervention increases physical activity in people with multiple sclerosis (MS).MethodsIn this parallel-arms trial, all study procedures were administered remotely. Adults diagnosed with MS (any subtype) were randomized to one of two 12-week (1 h/wk) active conditions: eFIT, online moderated structured groups; or eJournal, online independent journaling. For comparison, a treatment-as-usual (TAU; i.e., no eFIT/eJournal) group was enrolled. The primary outcome was feasibility (completion and adherence). The secondary efficacy outcomes included self-reported physical activity level (International Physical Activity Questionnaire, IPAQ).ResultsParticipants were 37 adults with MS. The sample was diverse: 66.7% female; age range 23–64 years; 17.5% Hispanic, 12.5% Black; and progressive and relapsing-remitting disease subtypes. Regarding feasibility, 70.7% completed; average adherence was 74.9%. Physical activity in active groups increased by 34.2% (baseline IPAQ = 2,406.8 ± 1,959.7, follow-up = 3,229.4 ± 2,575.2) and decreased in the TAU group by 17.4% (baseline = 2,519.9 ± 1,500.1, follow-up = 2,081.2 ± 1,814.9); group × time interaction was not statistically significant [F(2,25) = 1.467, p = 0.250; partial η2 = 0.105].ConclusionsTelehealth represents an accessible, acceptable vehicle to deliver targeted behavioral treatments to a neurologic population. eFIT may be an effective intervention for increasing physical activity, a historically intractable treatment target, in individuals with MS. In addition, these results provide evidence for feasibility of conducting fully remote clinical trial research.Classification of EvidenceThis study provides Class II evidence that for people with MS, participation in a group-based structured telehealth intervention compared with TAU resulted in a (non-significant) increase in self-reported physical activity level. The percentage of participants who completed follow-up questionnaires did not differ between groups. The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03829267).

Abstract:
An ultrasonic time-of-flight diffraction method for measuring stable crack growth in a three point bending specimen was analyzed by simulations of the wave field evolution in the test specimen. To calculate the actual crack length from the experimental measured time of flight of a crack tip diffracted ultrasound pulse the echo trains were successively measured during the whole bending test. The simulations deal with the generation and evolution of the ultrasound field in the specimen and with the design of the received signal. The simulations took into account the actual test geometry, the crack growth process, the blunted crack tip and the process of bending. With these simulations all individual received echoes are reproduced and interpreted. The echo, qualified for measuring the time of flight is undoubtedly the transverse wave diffracted on the crack tip. In order to optimize the test method and to increase the accuracy of measurements during the simulations Parameters like probe position, wave mode, measuring frequency and length of aperture of the probes wem separately varied. From the comparison between the simulations and the experimental measurements it can be concluded, that the developed method is weil suited for measuring stable crack growth in small specimens made from ductile material.

Abstract:
Our study aims at singling out some major principles underlying the functioning of the nominal and verbal systems of ibibio, english and french, with a view to contributing to scholarship in the area of foreign language teaching, and elaborating general language theories. For this purpose, our study is carried out within the framework of the metaoperational theory put forward by professor henri adamczewski. In the first chapter, we present the ibibio language; its sociolinguistic context, its speakers, its phonology and its morphosyntax, and we lay emphasis on features that distinguish it from english and french. The second chapter deals with the nominal group, particularly with the formation of nouns and with their actual use in discourse by means of determinants (keet, mfn, ami, ako, and ado) and quantifiers (mme, afit, uwak, and ubaak). Similar operations in english and french are also examined. The pronoun is also examined in this chapter and differences between the languages in this domain pointed out. The third chapter considers the verbal group. The elements of this group team up with the verb to a predicative relation. In this sphere, ibibio distinguishes itself from english and french by the fact that some of tis predicative elements are tonal in nature. In conclusion, it would appear that a better understanding of the functioning of ibibio is a requirement for the effective learning of french and other languages by speakers of ibibio

Abstract:
Emotionally Focused Therapy has been shown to produce statistically significant and sustainable change in couples (Wiebe, Johnson, Lafontaine, Burgess Moser, Dalgleish, & Tasca, 2017). This change has also been shown to extend to the family system through the use of Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (Stavrianopoulos, Faller, & Furrow, 2014). The methodology focuses on developing resilience through the co-regulation of the family system by developing secure attachment bonds (Wiebe & Johnson, 2017). EFFT strives to develop a high level of security within families that promotes more fluid communication patterns and more flexible problem solving strategies (Johnson & Lee, 2005). One of the most important steps in developing this security is by clarifying the current interactional cycles taking place, which typically leave the attachment needs of the family unmet (Johnson & Brubacher, 2016). Clinicians who help clients track their interactional cycles lay the foundation for effective change.

Abstract:
In March 2007 five satellites were launched as part of the NASA mission THEMIS. The aim of the mission is to answer the unknown questions regarding the onset of substorms. THEMIS data has also been used within other research fields. Today many scientists aim to investigate wave phenomena, such as whistler waves, wave interactions in the radiation belts and general turbulence in the magnetosphere and the solar wind. These processes occur at intermediate frequencies (a few hundreds of Hertz). Correct and reliable results require good knowledge of the frequency response,  the so called transfer function, for the electric field instrument (EFI). Post-launch calibrations have given good knowledge of the instrument's response at high and low frequencies. However, at intermediate frequencies (50-3000 Hz) the transfer function has only been determined via calculations/simulations and not yet obtained from data collected in space. Moreover, the transfer function changes substantially in this range, as the instrument transitions from a resistive low-frequency coupling to a capacitive high-frequency coupling. The transition is known as the RC roll-off. In this thesis, data from different regions and with different electrical settings have been analyzed to estimate the EFI sensors' sheath impedance and transfer function. Data have been collected during July 2009 and March 2011. From the first period, I-V curves where extracted for four different regions (i.e. with different plasma conditions) and their associated sheath impedance calculated. I-V curves are graphical representations of how the voltage differs with the changed bias current. From the sheath impedance and the measured free-space capacitance the RC roll-off can been directly calculated. An experiment was also conducted in March 2011 where the instrument was run in a special mode designed to measure the relative transfer function with the probes run at different bias setting, yielding different sheath impedances. The analysis of the I-V curves and relative transfer function show similar results, which clearly differ from the earlier believed values. Values for the sheath impedance are lower (4-6 MΩ) than the expected (30 MΩ) and depend on the usher setting. The usher is an electronic device which should shield the sensor from the photoelectron produced by illumination of the preamplifier. This lower sheath resistance implies higher than expected RC roll-off frequency, a result which is confirmed by the results from the relative transfer function. The roll-off is between 2-3 kHz, compared to the 400-500 Hz assumed prior to this study based on the assumption of a sheath impedance of around 30 MΩ.

Abstract:
The Integrated Project EUROTRANS, funded by the European Commission as part of the 6th European framework program, provides the advanced design of a multi purpose research oriented Accelerator Driven System (ADS), called XT-ADS (eXperimenTal-ADS), and the preliminary design of an industrial scale ADS, called EFIT (European Facility for Industrial Transmutation) [1]. EFIT [2] [3] is fuelled with Minor Actinides (U-free fuel) and its main design options overcome the limits of previous ADS projects, particularly as concerns the economic aspects, maintaining meanwhile the high safety level, the high reliability and low investment risks. EFIT is endowed with three different systems to remove decay heat, this paper deals with the Decay Heat Removal System 2 (DHR2). DHR2 mainly consists of an isolation condenser (IC) connected to the secondary side of the Steam Generators (SGs). DHR2 is a passive safety system: system operation is based on condensation of the steam coming from the SG unit and gravity head injection of the condensate back to the SG inlet. The system has been designed to satisfy the following two requirements: • to evacuate the decay power maintaining acceptable values of the vessel and fuel temperature; • to avoid lead solidification also in the configuration of maximum efficiency.

Abstract:
The European Facility for Industrial Transmutation (EFIT) is aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of transmutation process through the Accelerator Driven System (ADS) route on an industrial scale. The conceptual design of this reactor of about 400 MW thermal power is under development in the frame of the European EUROTRANS Integrated Project of the EURATOM Sixth Framework Program (FP6). EFIT is a pool-type reactor cooled by forced circulation of lead in the primary system where the heat is removed by steam generators installed inside the reactor vessel. The reactor power is sustained by a spallation neutron source supplied by a proton beam impinging on a lead target at the core centre. A safety-related Decay Heat Removal (DHR) system provided with four independent inherently safe loops is installed in the primary vessel to remove the decay heat in case of loss of secondary circuits heat removal capability. A quite detailed model of the EFIT reactor has been developed for the RELAP5 thermal-hydraulic code to be used in preliminary accidental transient analyses aimed at verifying the validity of the adopted solutions for the current reactor design with respect to the safety requirements, and confirm the inherent safety behavior of the reactor, such as decay heat removal in accidental conditions relying on natural circulation in the primary system. The accident analyses for the EFIT reactor include both protected and unprotected transients, on whether the reactor automatic trip, consisting in proton beam switch off, is actuated or not by the protection system. In this paper, the main results of the analyses of some protected transients with RELAP5 are presented. The analyzed transients concern the Protected Loss of Heat Sink (PLOHS), in which the DHR system plays a key role in bringing the reactor in safe conditions, and the Protected Loss of Flow (PLOF) transients with partial or total loss of forced circulation in the primary system.

"Decay Heat Benchmark for Uranium-Free Fuels With Minor Actinides." In 18th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone18-29654.

Abstract:
The decay heat (energy due to decay of unstable nuclei) is a small fraction of reactor power at nominal conditions, but after reactor shut-down it is the most important heat source. For taking this source into account in design and safety studies, recommendations are available for fuels of operating reactors, such as UOX and MOX. Fuels for EFIT (European Facility for Industrial Transmutation), unlike UOX and MOX, should contain a significant amount of Minor Actinides (MAs) that would influence decay heat. CEA, CIEMAT, ENEA, FZK (now KIT), PSI and SCK•CEN established a benchmark case and computed decay heat curves for MA-bearing fuels and a MOX-type fuel. The decay heat in the fuels with MAs is appreciably higher than in MOX, except for low burnup cases after short cooling times. This should be taken into account in the design of the decay heat removal system for EFIT. The obtained differences between the decay heat in MA-bearing and MOX fuels are supposed to be representative for the benchmark (or similar) conditions. More effort is needed to evaluate the uncertainties of the computed results.

Abstract:
Abstract Ultrasonic Guided waves (UGW) are one of the most promising tools for SHM especially for thin-walled structures like composites by allowing fast inspection of a large area in-service conditions. However, for practical applications a quality assessment is necessary to estimate damage detection capacity and probability of the designed SHM system. Such evaluation of a general overview for an arbitrary structure is limited with experiments due to repetitive wavefield measurements. Validated numerical analysis tools must be used. In this work, validation study for a complex composite structure with Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique (EFIT) will be presented. As reference model the measurement data coming from the Open Guided Waves Project (OGW) was selected. The dataset consists of measurements for two different cases called local and large stringer debond with additional baseline measurements. Within this contribution this experiment is reproduced by simulation using EFIT. Results show a good match between the experimental and simulated datasets, as the input parameters are fully determined prior to the simulations. The paper motivates further research, for example related to probability of detection analysis and numerical performance of the results.

Abstract:
The Integrated Project EUROTRANS, funded by the European Commission in the VI European framework program, was aimed at providing the advanced design of a multi purpose research oriented Accelerator Driven System (ADS), called eXperimenTal-ADS (XT-ADS), and the preliminary design of an industrial scale ADS, called European Facility for Industrial Transmutation (EFIT). One contribution of CRS4 (Centro di Ricerca, Sviluppo e Studi Superiori in Sardegna) has been to provide support to the overall plant design by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The simulations were required by the designer either for basic checking or in case of doubts on the validity of some technical options. We present four series of simulations which lead to the detection of unsatisfactory plant behaviour, related design modification and eventually control of the variant behaviour correctness. The first three simulation series deal with the EFIT design while the forth one deals with the XT-ADS design. In the first case, the simulation put in evidence a large recirculation zone under the reactive core that had to be removed for oxygen control concern. The recirculation zone is suppressed by modifying the shape of the core support grid. In the second case, we put in evidence a recirculation zone at the entrance of the pumping system above the core. This recirculation zone can lower the pump efficiency. The entrance shape was modified to eliminate the recirculation zone. In the third case, we check the behaviour of the passive Decay Heat Removal (DHR) heat exchanger. We show that while the primary coolant flow is globally organized as expected, some flow mixing limits the efficiency of the system. The system efficiency is restored by increasing its passive pumping strength. This is performed simply extending the Heat Exchanger shroud a half-meter in the bottom direction. In the last case, we investigate the capability of an external DHR system to withstand a long complete plant shutdown. The simulation encompasses about 6 hours of physical time, enough to understand the critical trends and infers that the DHR system may be not sufficient for its purpose. This result has suggested some modification to the design (i.e. surface treatment to improve metal wall emissivity) as well as to the accident management (i.e. restart primary pumps to eliminate fluid stratification). All these design improvements have been obtained in a reasonable amount of time thanks to the continuous collaboration and exchange of information between the CFD engineer and the designer.

Abstract:
The European Facility for Industrial Transmutation (EFIT) is developed to transmute long-lived actinides from spent fuel on an industrial scale. In this lead-cooled reactor an intermediate loop is eliminated for economic reasons. Within the framework of design and safety studies the impact of a steam generator tube rupture accident has been investigated. In this postulated event high-pressured liquid water blasts into the lead pool which could trigger various transients. As a major concern steam could be dragged into the core featuring a positive void worth. A thermal lead/water interaction could lead to in-core damage propagation; it could initiate a sloshing of the lead coolant and trigger voiding processes. Furthermore the pressurization of the cover gas needs to be considered. To prove the feasibility of the proposed design these risks are investigated and assessed. Numerical simulations are performed using the advanced safety analysis code SIMMER-III [2]. For the important issue of thermal lead/water interactions the SIMMER code has been validated against Japanese heavy-liquid/water injection experiments.
