Ignaz, Stegmiller. Part V Fairness and Expeditiousness of ICC Proceedings, 35 Confirmation of Charges. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198705161.003.0035.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter assesses the judicial efficiency of the ICC’s confirmation of charges proceedings. It reviews existing jurisprudence and addresses aspects of the adversarial nature of the proceedings, including disclosure and other procedural issues. It examines the impact of current practice on pre-trial preparation, the conduct of trials, and the overall duration of ICC proceedings. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between pre-trial and trial proceedings, including analysis of the post-confirmation modification of legal characterizations (Regulation 55 of the Regulations of the Court) and its importance for the design of the confirmation phase. The chapter concludes that future confirmation hearings and amendments should focus on judicial efficiency and the limited purpose of the hearing, which is submitting charges on trial or denying a confirmation on the basis of a considerably low legal threshold.

Full text
Abstract:
Successful management of anaesthesia requires expertise in the triad of knowledge, technical skills, and non-technical skills. The decision-making and techniques chosen should all be focused on patient safety, followed by patient comfort and efficiency. There is increasing evidence that anaesthesia management has an influence on patient outcome beyond the first couple of postoperative days. This chapter provides an overview of some of the key aspects of management of anaesthesia: the importance of proper preparation at all stages; the evidence—or lack thereof—for choices between techniques and drugs; and the key role of effective communication by the anaesthetist.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on preparation for the evaluation of disability that helps the evaluator to avoid inappropriate referrals, to ensure that relevant and sufficient data are efficiently collected during the evaluation, and to facilitate compliance with ethical and legal requirements. It first considers the contact between the potential evaluator and the referral source, which may be a disability insurance company, an attorney representing the claimant or the company, or an independent vendor. It then looks at practical concerns in disability evaluations, including conflict of interest and multiple relationship, time constraints and scheduling availability, competence/expertise, access to necessary psychometric instruments, and financial arrangements. The chapter also explains how the scope of the disability evaluation should be defined and discusses the evaluator's contact with referral sources, attorneys, and claimants; logistics and schedules of disability evaluations; authorization and consent; documentation of the evaluation; and adjudication versus litigation of disability claims.

Abstract:
Revised for its second edition to include the latest national and international guidelines, the Oxford Handbook of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine enables efficient preparation and planning before the journey, advises on camp logistics, risk management, and medical problems during the trip, as well as highlighting rare but important risks to those visiting remote areas. Focusing on preventative measures, it also contains chapters dealing with crisis management, emergency care, and evacuation from challenging environments. Now containing more guidance about the obligations of a clinician joining an expedition, and the ethical approach to such work, it also provides an increased emphasis on medicine in various extreme environments. With revised and additional illustrations, more colour plates, and an increased use of important algorithms, it has been updated with the support of the Royal Geographical Society, and incorporates the combined knowledge and experience of a team of experienced clinicians and expeditioners.

Locatelli, Francesco, Celestina Manzoni, Giuseppe Pontoriero, Vincenzo La Milia, and Salvatore Di Filippo. Haemofiltration and haemodiafiltration. Edited by Jonathan Himmelfarb. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199592548.003.0260_update_001.

Full text
Abstract:
Many observational studies have consistently shown that high-flux haemodialysis (hf-HD) has positive effects on the survival and morbidity of uraemic patients when compared with low-flux haemodialysis, and mainly considering the results of Membrane Permeability Outcome (MPO) studies there is evidence favouring high-flux treatments. A further improvement in convective treatments is represented by the on-line modality. On-line preparation from fresh dialysate by a cold-sterilizing filtration process is a cost-effective method of providing large volumes of infusion solution. Randomized, controlled, large-sized trials with long follow-up in haemofiltration (HF) are unfortunately lacking, possibly suggesting the difficulties in performing these trials, mainly in providing the same urea Kt/V considered adequate in HD. On-line haemodiafiltration (HDF) is considered the most efficient technique of using high-flux membranes, and clearances of small solutes like urea are higher in HDF than in HF and of middle solutes like β‎‎‎2-microglobulin are higher than in hf-HD. Thus HDF, as a strategy based on simultaneous diffusive and convective transport, may combine the beneficial effects of diffusive standard HD with the possible advantages of convective HF. Five large, randomized controlled trials just concluded are inconclusive in definitively clarifying the impact of on-line HDF on chronic kidney disease stage 5 patient outcomes.

Touchon, Justin C. Applied Statistics with R. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198869979.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Whether at the undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate level, Applied Statistics with R: A Practical Guide for the Life Sciences teaches readers to properly analyze data in an efficient, accessible, plainspoken, frank, and occasionally humorous manner. Readers will come away with the knowledge of which analyses they should use and when they should use them, an important skill in an age when the statistical analyses used in the life-sciences are becoming increasingly advanced. This book uses the statistical language R, which is the choice of ecologists worldwide and is rapidly becoming the ‘go-to’ stats program throughout the life-sciences. Written around a single real-world dataset, Applied Statistics with R which encourages readers to become deeply familiar with an imperfect but realistic set of data, much like they themselves might collect. Early chapters are designed to teach basic data manipulation skills and build good habits in preparation for learning more advanced analyses. This approach also demonstrates the importance of viewing data through different lenses, facilitating an easy and natural progression from linear and generalized linear models through to mixed effects versions of those same analyses. Readers will also learn advanced plotting and data-wrangling techniques, and gain an introduction to writing their own functions. Applied Statistics with R is suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate students, professional researchers, and practitioners throughout the life-sciences, whether in the fields of ecology, evolution, environmental studies, or computational biology.
