Abstract:
The article analyzes the problems of improving the effectiveness of applied sociological research. The scientific method that helps to ensure objectivity and consistency in the study of a social problem is considered. The directions, forms and prospects for the development and improvement of the effectiveness of applied sociology from a practical point of view are given.Intelligence research is the simplest type of applied sociological analysis. It solves problems that are very limited in their content, covers, as a rule, small study populations, and is based on a simplified program and concise methodological tools, which in applied sociology is understood as a package of documents specially developed for each study designed to collect primary sociological information, such as: an interview form, a mass or expert questionnaire, a card for recording the results of observation, studying documents; further: sampling projects, mathematical analysis of primary information, etc.A methodology for evaluating the social effectiveness of applied sociological research applied to any written results of scientific activity is proposed.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether contemporaneous practices are adequately represented in recent critical care comparative effectiveness research studies. DESIGN: All critical care comparative effectiveness research trials published in the New England Journal of Medicine from April 2019 to March 2020 were identified. To examine studies published in other high impact medical journals during the same period, such trials were subsequently also identified in the Journal of the American Medical Association and The Lancet. All cited sources were reviewed, and the medical literature was searched to find studies describing contemporary practices. Then, the designated control group or the comparable therapies studied were examined to determine if they represented contemporaneous critical care practices as described in the medical literature. RESULTS: Twenty-five of 332 randomised clinical trials published in these three journals during this 1-year period described critical care comparative effectiveness research that met our inclusion criteria. Seventeen characterised current practices before enrolment (using surveys, observational studies and guidelines) and then incorporated current practices into one or more study arm. In the other eight, usual care arms appeared insufficient. Four of these trials randomly assigned patients to one of two fixed approaches at either end of a range of usually titrated care. However, due to randomisation, different subgroups within each arm received care that was inappropriate for their specific clinical conditions. In the other four of these trials, common practices influencing treatment choice were not reflected in the trial design, despite a prior effort to characterise usual care. CONCLUSION: One-third of critical care comparative effectiveness research trials published in widely read medical journals during a recent year did not include a designated control arm or comparable therapies representative of contemporary practices. Failure to incorporate contemporary practices into critical care comparative effectiveness trials appears to be a widespread design weakness.

Abstract:
A Collaborative Interaction Management System (CIMS) is a system that potentially provide some assistance to the teachers in managing the student's collaborative interaction in forum discussions. The projected main function of the CIMS is to provide tools that automatically gauge the quality of interaction as reflected in student's individual contributions so as to make it easier for the instructor to make judgments on the effectiveness of the collaborative process. This study aims to assess how effective and usable is the developed CIMS based on the evaluation of faculty and students. The descriptive research design is utilized in this study. The five-point Likert scale is used and the gathered data are statistically interpreted through the utilisation of a weighted mean. The sample population of this study is the one hundred twenty participants coming from the different universities in the area where the survey was conducted. The researcher adopted a survey instrument made by some software specialists. The bases of the instrument are some of the characteristics listed on the software quality model of ISO 9126. These are the functionality, usability and the reliability. Each of these software characteristics is described by some indicators to obtain the responses of the participants. The overall evaluation of the participants displayed the weighted mean of 4.0, thus it can be concluded that the functionality, usability and reliability of the software is very good.

Abstract:
School administrators consisting of Principals and Headmasters (PGB) play a significant role in leading the school to achieve excellence. To ensure that excellence is achieved within the timeframe stipulated, the PGB received guidance from fellow coaches known as School Improvement Partners (SIP). The coaching process requires mutual understanding between the two parties so that it can work smoothly and effectively (Narimawati, 2007) without any conflict of ideologies. This study is to identify the effectiveness of the coaching of SIP through the good relations and professional skills practiced during the ongoing coaching. A total of 212 PGB as respondents and data were analyzed using SPSS version 23 for the descriptive analysis, while AMOS version 22 is used for advanced statistics Structural Equation Modeling. The study found that the goodness of fit model by SIP coaching is good with reading of chi-square/df=2.203, CFI= .969, p=0.00 and RMSEA=.076. Good relationship with professional coaching sessions have contributed a total of 71% (R2=.71) to the effectiveness of the coaching as well as it helps to increase the PGB confidence in the development of schools. This finding confirms that coaching by SIP directly acts as a catalyst for the success of the school and to complete the needs of mission and vision of the Ministry of Education, Malaysia.

RODER, EMANUELA. "The complexity of therapeutic action in DBT: preliminary studies on process and outcome." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/241311.

Full text
Abstract:
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT; Linehan, 1993, 2014) is a structured, complex and comprehensive cognitive-behavioral treatment program for patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and severe dysfunctional behaviors (repeated suicidal attempts, self-harm behaviors, relational instability, other impulsive behaviors). Up to now, DBT proved its effectiveness in several studies: suicide attempts and dysfunctional behaviors decreased, while emotional regulation and general functioning improved. The present research aimed at assessing the effectiveness of DBT and its mechanisms of action, evaluating both outcome and process dimensions. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the presentation of the DBT model, examining its theoretical foundations, the agreements underlying the treatment, the modalities of therapeutic program, and the strategies of intervention. The second part of the thesis is an evaluation of the effectiveness of DBT, examining the course over time of the target variables. The study is longitudinal, single-blind, with a two-arm parallel design, conducted following the international guidelines for the outcome studies on intention-to-treat samples. DBT was compared with another treatment program comparable by patient type, objectives, and complexity of interventions. The sample was comprised by 95 outpatients, assigned to groups with the minimisation procedure and assessed every three months. Since the individual variability was expected to be consistent, Hierarchical Linear Models with random effects were used. Results showed that suicidality, self-harm, emotional and behavioral dysregulation decreased in both groups after one year; unconditional growth models indicated that subjects differed in the elevation and in the rate of change. Moreover, results on the completers’ subsample suggested that the group setting and the intensity of treatment could represent specific therapeutic mechanisms. The third part of the thesis is composed by process studies with a single-case design, in the strand of the process-outcome research: the empirical evaluation of two therapeutic couples, one with a favorable outcome and one with a partial outcome, was conducted. The patients were two young women with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, different for personality profile and dysfunctional behaviors at the beginning of treatment; they followed a DBT standard program with the same therapist, a male experienced clinician. Sessions over the first year of treatment were examined (N1 = 38; N2 = 37). The technical and the relational dimensions of the therapeutic process were assessed and examined through a macroanalytic and microanalytic perspective. Results showed that some aspects are present in both couples: namely, the adherence to the treatment model and the attitude of the therapist oriented towards collaboration. On the other hand, specificities relating to each therapeutic couple emerged. In the treatment of the patient with positive outcomes, there was a globally positive relational climate; furthermore, therapist and patient can deal even with episodes of misunderstanding. Instead, in the treatment of the patient with partial outcomes, therapist and patient struggled to find an attunement and to work in synergy, remaining trapped in problematic relational patterns and without fully achieving the therapeutic objectives previously agreed. Taken together, results confirmed the effectiveness and the complexity of DBT. More specifically, they shed light on overlaps and differences between DBT and other theoretical models, in particular interventions promoting reflective functioning. Furthermore, the importance of a collaborative relationship between therapist and patient was confirmed. Overall, results suggested that mechanisms of action in DBT can be understood only in light of the dynamics of the therapeutic process in which they occur.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND:There is a need for more Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) on Chinese medicine (CM) to inform clinical and policy decision-making. This document aims to provide consensus advice for the design of CER trials on CM for researchers. It broadly aims to ensure more adequate design and optimal use of resources in generating evidence for CM to inform stakeholder decision-making.METHODS:The Effectiveness Guidance Document (EGD) development was based on multiple consensus procedures (survey, written Delphi rounds, interactive consensus workshop, international expert review). To balance aspects of internal and external validity, multiple stakeholders, including patients, clinicians, researchers and payers were involved in creating this document.RESULTS:Recommendations were developed for "using available data" and "future clinical studies". The recommendations for future trials focus on randomized trials and cover the following areas: designing CER studies, treatments, expertise and setting, outcomes, study design and statistical analyses, economic evaluation, and publication.CONCLUSION:The present EGD provides the first systematic methodological guidance for future CER trials on CM and can be applied to single or multi-component treatments. While CONSORT statements provide guidelines for reporting studies, EGDs provide recommendations for the design of future studies and can contribute to a more strategic use of limited research resources, as well as greater consistency in trial design.

Abstract:
As of 2013, the damage caused by corrosion on highway bridges has been estimated to cost approximately 14 billion dollars annually, and this cost has been increasing over the years. Corrosion is one of the natural phenomena that has been slowly deteriorating infrastructure systems across the United States. One of the most problematic types of corrosion is crevice corrosion, which is defined as the formation of rust between overlapping surfaces, such as the case of a splice connection where flanges are attached by splice plates. A significant number of steel bridges in Indiana have developed crevice corrosion in splice connections. Therefore, this research focuses on the crevice corrosion, or “pack rust,” occurring in these structural elements. The application of coatings alone has not been enough to stop pack rust at these connections. In an attempt to look for approaches that can effectively mitigate this problem and maintain the designed service life of bridges, different strategies have been studied and tested. It was found that the proper use of penetrating sealers can be effective in delaying the development of further corrosion, while the use of caulk alone may be problematic as a repair method.
