Rach, Margaret M. (Margaret Mannion). "The Impact of EEO Legislation Upon Selection Procedures for Transfer, Training and Development and Promotion." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1985. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331995/.

Abstract:
Legislation, court decisions, and the changing political and social climate provide evidence of the importance of the outcomes of EEO litigation involving challenged selection procedures for transfer, training and development, and promotion. These selection procedures are being challenged by more informed employees and, in many cases, result in costly litigation. Thus, organizations must be aware of the continuing developments in employment law especially as found in court decisions and related legislation. This study investigates judicial and EEOC decisions in discrimination cases to provide answers to these questions: Are organizations aware of the outcomes of EEO litigation involving challenged selection procedures for transfer, training and development, and promotion? Are organizations aware of what constitutes a discriminatory practice in the selection of employees for transfer, training and development, and promotion? Does management recognize and follow nondiscriminatory procedures in selecting personnel for transfer, training and development, and promotion? The purposes of the study are 1. To analyze outcomes of EEO litigation involving challenged selection procedures for transfer, training and development, and promotion; 2. To develop a model set of guidelines to aid organizations in developing nondiscriminatory procedures for use in selecting employees for transfer, training and development, and promotion. This study concludes that many employers are aware of the outcomes of EEO litigation involving challenged selection procedures for transfer, training and development, and promotion. Many employers are also aware of what constitutes a discriminatory practice in the selection of employees for some employment advantage. However, management does not always recognize and follow nondiscriminatory procedures when selecting employees for transfer, training and development, and promotion. The number of cases in which selection procedures were found discriminatory supports this conclusion.

Pearson, Rachel Quinn. "A Review of Supreme Court Cases Involving Workplace Retaliation: 2006-2018." TopSCHOLAR®, 2018. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2096.

Full text
Abstract:
Employers want to reduce or eliminate claims of employee retaliation whenever possible because of associated negative organizational consequences such as legal liability, various financial costs for the organization, and negative effect on employee morale. As such, it is important to identify the factors that impact the court’s decision to rule in favor of the plaintiff or the defendant. The purpose of the present study is to identify factors driving the court’s decision, as well as to review the implications of recent Supreme Court holdings for retaliation issues. Supreme Court cases involving a claim of employee retaliation from BNSF v. White (2006) to the present were reviewed and coded on factors likely to influence the court’s decision. Implications associated with these factors and the implications of relevant Supreme Court holdings are discussed. The ability of the plaintiff to establish all three prongs of a retaliation claim was found to be important for the court to rule in his/her favor. If the retaliatory act meets or exceeds the EEOC deterrence standard, the court tended to favor the plaintiff. Finally, the results suggest that the plaintiff should use the organization’s grievance policy, if there is one, as the court tended to rule favorably for the plaintiff when he/she used the available grievance policy. Additional implications are explored and limitations are discussed.

Dawson, Elizabeth, and n/a. "A gender analysis of the employment profile of the A.C.T. Department of Education between 1976 and 1991." University of Canberra. Education, 1994. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060704.130917.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to discover if there has been quantitative change in the gender balance of the employment profile of the ACT Department of Education from 1976 to 1991 and to explore possible reasons for such change. It should be noted that the Department has had several changes of name over the period covered by this study including the ACT Department of Education, the ACT Department of Health, Education and the Arts, and it is presently known as the ACT Department of Education and Training. For the sake of clarity it will be referred to throughout as the ACT Department of Education. The employment configuration will be studied from 1976, the earliest year of available data, to 1991 to measure relative changes in the position of men and women. This paper will examine significant events in the ACT Education system, in particular the introduction of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) legislation in 1984, to determine whether the introduction of legislation and/or other initiatives brought about moves toward Equal Employment Opportunity for women. The study will develop and consider hypotheses and examine several theoretical explanations for the changes or lack of them in the position of men and women. Recommendations will be made concerning future directions for research and action to achieve equal employment opportunity for women, the largest group of the four groups targeted in the EEO legislation. The central argument of the study is that the adoption of quantitative approaches to measure success/failure in EEO programs is of limited use. These theoretical approaches, largely informed by liberal feminism, offer inadequate understanding of the resistances to change. Other theoretical perspectives are needed if the issue is seen as "what are the resistances and what are the policies and strategies that can be developed to overcome them?". Feminist critical theory, however, enables more productive questions to be raised about how social power is constructed and maintained, about hegemonic culture, and about the language and cultural biases embedded in administrative structures in education. Insights thus gained into issues, events and resistances give individuals and groups agency, the power to act for change.

Wheeller, Brian. "Critiquing eco/ego/sustainable tourism : broadening horizons." Thesis, Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10369/6250.

Full text
Abstract:
In the early 1990's, I argued that the real issues, those at the crux of tourism impact problems, were not being addressed - pertinent questions ignored amidst the blossoming euphoria of green rhetoric. A process emerged in tourism development whereby ego-enhancing, politically correct sound bites drowned out the voice of reason, namely common sense. Wonderfully self-satisfying, this proved a smug and timely convenience as politicians, planners, 'travellers' and increasingly (even) many tourism academics appeared to see problems without answers as an anathema. There must either be 'answers' irrespective of their practical effectiveness or a process be enthusiastically embraced whereby difficult questions are eliminated, or dismissed to the realms of the nihilistic fringe. Enter eco/ego/sustainable tourism. Scoring heavily on both counts, dovetailing nicely into the milieu of deceit while simultaneously reinforcing the required veneer of respectable positivism, it enabled the mundane, but crucial (and I argue intractable) questions to be systematically and deliberately sidestepped. Fifteen years on, little has changed. The futility of sustainable tourism is around us for all to see - should we choose, or care, to look. But, even now, we cannot face up to seeing it for what it is. Or, actually, what it isn't. The canard continues. Focussing on eco/ego/sustainable tourism, the thesis presents selected published works reflecting the nexus of my thinking on - and contribution to - the body of learning. It is a subjective, emotive perspective, with the emphasis on 'the personal'. And the eclectic. Concomitantly, the author advocates the use of 'visual' imagery, much in evidence in the publications, to fire imagination. The works seek to illustrate the manner in which empirical observation, experience and theory are all interwoven. Consequently, it is not just a matter of content, but of process: the means of illuminating and conveying ideas, and of teaching, are also explored. The essence of the argument presented in the thesis is that the void, the chasm between theory and practice, between what (perhaps) 'should be' and what actually 'is', cannot be bridged. The sheer number of tourists travelling, the absolute volume involved, combined with widespread corruption and the increasing adoption (universally?) of a 'what's in it for me, now' mentality, together negate any 'sustainable' efforts of redemption. My cynical views of eco/ego/sustainable tourism have not mellowed over the years. On the contrary, they have hardened as, alarmed, I have become increasingly pessimistic in (the dismal) light of the burgeoning optimism of others as to the potential, always potential, of sustainability. Dream on. The counter plea here, then - in ever more stringent tones - is that of the necessity to contextualise eco/ego/sustainable tourism within reality - to exit fantasy land. I, too, can dream, can't I?

Full text
Abstract:
This study analyzes the framing processes of the Indignados movement in Barcelona, as an exemplar of the latest wave of protests, and argues that it expresses a new ecological-economic way out of the crisis. It finds that the movement was not just a reaction to the economic crisis and austerity policies, but that it put forward a metapolitical critique of the social imaginary and (neo)liberal representative democracy. The diagnostic frames of the movement denunciate the subjugation of politics and justice to economics, and reject the logic of economism. The prognostic frames of the movement advance a vision of socio-ecological sustainability and of "real democracy", each articulated differently by a "pragmatist" and an "autonomist" faction within the movement. It argues that frames are overarching outer boundaries that accommodate different ideologies. Ideologies can nevertheless also be put into question by antagonizing frames. Furthermore, through the lens of the Indignados critique, the distinction between materialist and post-materialist values that characterizes the New Social Movement literature is criticised, as "real democracy" is connected to social and environmental justice as well as to a critique of economism and the "imperial mode of living".

"Investigating patterns of local climate governance: How low-carbon municipalities and intentional communities intervene in social practices." Wiley, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/eet.1804.

Full text
Abstract:
The local level has gained prominence in climate policy and governance in recent years as it is increasingly perceived as a privileged arena for policy experimentation and social and institutional innovation. However, the success of local climate governance in industrialized countries has been limited. One reason may be that local communities focus too much on strategies of technology-oriented ecological modernization and individual behavior change and too little on strategies that target unsustainable social practices and their embeddedness in complex socioeconomic patterns. In this paper we assess and compare the strategies of "low-carbon municipalities" (top-down initiatives) and those of "intentional communities" (bottom-up initiatives). We were interested to determine to what extent and in which ways each community type intervenes in social practices to curb carbon emissions and to explore the scope for further and deeper interventions on the local level. Using an analytical framework based on social practice theory we identify characteristic patterns of intervention for each community type. We find that low-carbon municipalities face difficulties in transforming carbon-intensive social practices. While offering some additional low-carbon choices, their ability to reduce carbon-intensive practices is very limited. Their focus on efficiency and individual choice shows little transformative potential. Intentional communities, by contrast, have more institutional and organizational options to intervene in the web of social practices. Finally, we explore to what extent low-carbon municipalities can learn from intentional communities and propose strategies of hybridization for policy innovation to combine the strengths of both models.

This study deals with discipleship as a challenge to the church in the twenty first century, with the Gospel of Mark as a starting-point. Discipleship is after all the heart of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It embraces the whole of the church’s existence; identity and integrity. Evans (2001:30) exclaims: “To be a true disciple, one must accept the fate of the Master; and the Master’s fate is inextricably bound up with his identity, purpose, and mission. True Discipleship cannot emerge in isolation from true Christology.”

Abstract:
Тhis paper shows the effects of theoretical and practical eco-driving training, analysing driving parameters in the period before training, in the short-term and long-term after the training. A model was formed to optimize periodical driver training based on the established relationships between the parameters. Using the mathematical analysis and statistical tests in the longitudinal observation period, the exact period of the drivers retraining was defined in order to maximize profit for the transport company, taking into account the planned costs. The results indicate that the positive effects of eco-driving were significantly expressed in good driving conditions. With bad weather conditions that correlate with bad driving conditions, the effects of eco-driving training are suffocated with increased requirements for safer driving. The model could be applicable to test the effects of drivers training in different transportation companies and different markets.

Jonsson, Fredrik. "Product Related Environmental Work in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Thailand, Developing and Manufacturing Electrical and Electronic Products." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Engineering, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-8828.

Full text
Abstract:

Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand that develop and manufacture electrical and electronic products are among other SMEs in the world meeting increasingly stringent legal and customer requirements related to environmental issues. Obstacles for the SMEs around the world to meet these requirements are almost the same in form of lack of knowledge, budget and resources. The differences between SMEs in Thailand and SMEs in the EU, Japan or even Korea are that these countries have been developed the eco-design concept and SMEs have been involved in eco-design activities for many years. This process and activities are new both for the SMEs and for the supporting institutes and organisations in Thailand. Thailand has just started to build up the infrastructure to support the SMEs to implement the eco-design concept and to work more with product related environmental issues. The focus right now for the SMEs in this research is to comply with the EU Directives, RoHS and WEEE, and this is where the main investments are made, e.g. in order to be able to export to the demanding EU market.

This research is investigating what kind of environment demands that SMEs in Thailand that develop and manufacture electrical and electronic products have on their products, how they handle these requirements and also what obstacles there are for implementing a more product related environmental concept, also known as eco-design, Design for the Environment (DfE), Green Design or Environmentally Oriented Design. A research in form of interviews and factory visits has been done with five different SMEs in Thailand. These five SMEs have also participated in the first official eco-design projects in Thailand with funding from the government in Thailand and also some from the EU. Interviews have been conducted with involved parties in these project such as institutes and experts provided by Universities. These interviews were made in order to get their opinion and experience about the present situation for SMEs in Thailand that develop and manufacture electrical and electronic products to work with product related green issues.

The research shows that these companies have the possibilities and conditions to work further on with the eco-design concept in the future. Their participation in the eco-design projects has been a good experience and there is evidence of strong support from the management and owners, environmental awareness, pro-active work and motivation among the companies. The obstacles are as mentioned above concerning lack of resources, knowledge and experience of how these environmental demands and requirements will affect the product development process. This lack of experience depends mostly on the fact that these eco-design projects are the first projects in this field for the companies. These five companies have now built up a fundamental knowledge but are still in need of further support. The communication between the SMEs and supporting parties are important and also one factor these five companies think is functioning well.

The association of Virtual Reality (VR) to clinical practice has become common in the recent years, showing to be an additional tool on health care, especially for elderly. Its use has been related to higher therapeutic adhesion levels and well being sensation. Such emotional based aspects are often observed by subjective tools of relative validity. This study analyzed the immediate effects of varied VR contexts balance training over emotional behavior, which was observed under peaks of maximum expression of EEG waves. Methodology: 40 individuals, divided in two groups, both gender, 20 young and 20 elderly, were submitted to a 60 minutes intervention, including balance training under VR. The first 25 minutes referred to initial evaluation, general orientation and cognitive assessment by the use of Mini Mental. The next ten minutes were designated to the avatar creation and tutorial video presentation. Through the following 20 minutes, the individuals from both groups were exposed to the exact same sequence of games under virtual contexts, while submitted to electroencephalography by Emotiv EPOC? focusing Adhesion, Frustration and Meditation states. The virtual interface was provided by the Nintendo? game, Wii Fit Plus, with the scenarios Balance Bubble (1), Penguin (2), Soccer (3), Tight Rope (4) and Table Tilt (5). Finally, a questionnaire of personal impressions was applied on the 5 minutes left. Results: data collected showed 64,7% of individuals from both groups presented higher concentration of adhesion peaks on Balance Bubble game. Both groups also presented similar behavior regarding meditation state, with marks close to 40%, each, on the same game, Table Tilt. There was divergence related to the frustration state, being the maximum concentration for the young group on the Soccer game (29,3%), whilst the elderly group referred highest marks to Tight Rope game (35,2%). Conclusion: Findings suggest virtual contexts can be favorable to adhesion and meditation emotional patterns induction, regardless age and for both sexes, whilst frustration seems to be more related to cognitive motor affordance, likely to be influenced by age. This information is relevant and contributes to the orientation for the best choice of games applied in clinical practice, as for other studies regarding this topic

Abstract:
This thesis explores the nature of the ego, drawing upon Christian and secular conceptions, in order to determine whether it is something to be affirmed or denied. Contemporary perspectives which either overvalue the individual self, or retort by refuting it, are questioned in the light of psychology, spirituality and Christian doctrine. I have been vexed by the existence of two seemingly opposing views within Christian popular culture. Those who look to the mystical tradition, the Spirituality of the Desert, claim that self-denial is the path to spiritual enlightenment and discovery of the true self; the ego is a false self. By contrast, the world of psychology endorses the merits of a healthy ego. Accordingly, psychology has made a significant contribution to pastoral theology and the life of church communities, especially in relation to personality dynamics. I seek to overcome this dichotomy through a broadening of our understanding of the self and adoption of the notion of personhood arising from a theological anthropology, which includes a relational understanding of imago Dei, Christological kenosis and the social doctrine of the Trinity. Findings are related to the paradoxical demand of Christian discipleship, encapsulated by Jesus’ teaching that his followers must lose themselves in order to be save themselves. The thesis concludes with a more practical turn, applying the insights of the earlier psychology and spirituality chapters, to assess tools for daily life for enhancing emotional and spiritual intelligence, which are taken as interdependent. The goal is for the ego to become servant, not master. The overall approach is a theoretical interdisciplinary one, drawing on the perspectives of philosophy, sociology, psychology, spirituality and theology, in order to gain a comprehensive picture of the ego.

Abstract:
The Scenic Rim is a significant agricultural region an hour west of Australia’s third largest city, Brisbane, and also the coastal beaches of the Gold Coast. This region has been driven by agriculture for its entire history. However, Brisbane and the Gold Coast region are rapidly expanding and as a result, there is expected to be a massive urban overflow into the Scenic Rim region, resulting in the region’s population more than doubling in less than 20 years. While this shift presents many opportunities for the region, it is also accompanied by many challenges. The Scenic Rim Community Plan 2011-2026 states that the citizens of the Scenic Rim intend to promote sustainable development, create jobs with locally run businesses, and establish a strong infrastructure that compliments their other goals (Scenic Rim Community Plan, 2011). The infrastructure of the region will be under a large amount of pressure with the sudden influx of people migrating there. Complex adaptive systems theory (CAS) combined with transition theory is used here as a framework to show that the system is dependent on the interaction of agents and the feedback from those interactions as well as feedback from the entire system and external environment. CAS also states that a system is susceptible to changes in the environment, whether that be new rules and policies, or external disturbances. CAS is a good representation of a region as a region is comprised of a complex array of agents interacting with each other towards regional outcomes. System rules from a regional perspective refer to laws and policies which can have long reaching effects on a region if changed. Referring to a region in terms of CAS means region must be resilient and adapt to external system disturbances such as this mass migration or natural disasters. This research uses CAS and transition theory to show that in order to be adaptive as well as move the region towards the desired state of sustainability, the agents within the system must interact under new system rules which provide an environment that promotes and enables this transition. The key is to determine those rules or policy changes. A literature review showed that the main challenges faced by existing sustainable developments around the world were transportation, local employment, and sustainable housing, whether they were eco-homes, eco-villages, or eco-cities. The challenges found in the literature were combined with the hybrid CAS/transition theory framework in order to create a general template for addressing regional sustainability. The template provided a process which involved determining region specific sustainability projects, defining the agents responsible for those projects, and then discovering the system rule or policy changes required to push the agents to implement those projects. The implementation of these projects becomes the policy scenario within the scenario planning phase of this project. Utilizing this template with the general lessons learned from the literature combined with a significant amount of collaboration with the main stakeholder in the project, the Scenic Rim Regional Council, several potential sustainability projects were brainstormed in order to create a policy scenario. While these three projects alone were not expected to transition an entire region towards sustainability, the research focused on defining a process and template which could be scaled up in future projects to eventually result in a transition to a new desired state of regional sustainability. Three of the brainstormed potential projects were chosen to be analyzed in further detail in this project included repairing the old train line out of the Scenic Rim and creating a transit hub in the largest town Beaudesert, creating a co-working space close to the transit hub, and creating minimum requirements for new homes to have photovoltaics as well as solar hot water installed on their roofs. These three projects were chosen because together they address local employment, transportation, and housing in some capacity. Together these solutions formed the policy scenario within this research. In order to analyze the potential impact of these three solutions, an approximate energy model of the Scenic Rim Region was created. In this model, the solutions were modeled in a policy scenario and then regional performance up until 2040 was simulated and compared against a "business as usual" scenario in which it was assumed no changes were made in the future and projected performance was based solely on historical trends. The results of this analysis demonstrated that the policy scenario was able to drastically reduce the electricity demand of the housing sector in the Scenic Rim as well as drastically reducing the oil demand in the region. An approximate economic analysis was done of the policy scenario. The QLD PV feed in tariff and decreased electricity bills from the SHW system would more than offset the increase to the homes mortgage caused by the PV and SHW systems. The gas savings from only driving into the city once per week by using the co-working space more than offset the rental cost. The restored rail line would have a high initial investment, but the shared cost with Logan City combined with increased use results in the rail line paying for itself by 2029. This process and the hybrid CAS/transition theory framework proved to be quite effective and have the potential to be scaled up significantly to fully transition a region towards a sustainable future.

Abstract:
Pursuing the sustainable urban project means to understand the reasons of crisis of the twentieth century city and interpret them under new approaches. This is the purpose of the thesis, to assume the critical states of the cities, and analyze them to describe a more sustainable development model that is able to transform some of the criticalities into opportunities. The reference models of the analysis come from new generation concepts derived from the principles of "new urbanism": restore the image of a city that resembles the living organisms in some ways and a thermodynamic system in others. The city is a biotic organism that consumes and exchanges "influences", transforms them to function and ultimately produces waste. It will be a succession of phases that can be synthesized by the term "metabolism" used in biology. For "Urban Metabolism" we mean the exchange of matter, energy and information that is established between the urban settlement and its geographic and social context. The biosphere as all open systems, exchanges substances and dissipates energy, and on this exchange depends the reproductive capacity and the transformation of the subsystem, because of that it is important both the system and its environment. The system made by subsystems, individuals, machines and networks, is part of energy diagrams and information. The urban metabolism determines the requirements of raw materials and the impact their use has on the biosphere, creating this way the relationships between materials and social processes. Urban areas have a high concentration of energy per area in comparison with fields or natural ecosystems. The magnitudes of the flows generated in the cities are causing imbalances in nature, as we all noticed nowadays, and perhaps the most prominent are the environmental type. So if we pretend to achieve the sustainability of the living system we must consider the typology of energy and materials supply and the transformation processes of these two factors. If you want to study the metabolism of an urban system is necessary to consider it as a thermodynamic system, in other words, for an urban settlement it is appliable the second law of thermodynamics that says:"the tendency of a closed system is to always develop towards disorder ". It is easy to imagine that a growing, uncontrolled and excessive disorder can lead a city to disaster, which prevents us of the importance of using measures to react to the increase of disorder or entropy. Unlike this, two solutions: optimization within the energy flows into renewable energy supplies from the outside, and increase the process efficiency recycling the local waste produced by the urban metabolism. The waste produced in the system is recycled; a concept developed in the ecovectorization. In summary they are defined as eco-vectors agents to achieve a balance in the territory organism. We are not prepared to absorb endlessly the dross from the modern city: it must be optimized vectorially the system to plan an external energy supply. From where the additional power needed is going to come? And what is its going to be its quality? It is proposed the review of projective tendency, demonstrating the integration of ecovectors useful to the conclusions from this reflection.

Abstract:
Nature inspires me, in this project I am working with the structure of tree trunks and bark, and the translation of things I see into woven fabrics. When I am in the nature I often feel calm and relaxed. I can ignore everything else in my environment. I would like to re-create this calm feeling and bring it into a room. In the different bark structures can I see an interesting variety in the shapes witch I would like to work with in textile. In my bachelor degree work I have designed textiles with measured acoustical effects for public spaces. By making samples and test them at SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, I have examined the acoustic damping of the materials. The result is a collection of three woven fabrics with different appearances and sound affecting functions.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Considering the global environmental situation, natural resources scarcity and the impact that the construction sector has on the planet, this dissertation has as it’s main objective, the exploration of some options of sustainable modular wood construction existing in Portugal, with the purpose of developing a small illustrated manual with strategies for this type of construction, in a clear and succinct way, so that this topic can be easily approached and understood. Nowadays Eco Architecture is an issue that is arousing interest worldwide in all its aspects and solutions. However, in Portugal, although it is gradually becoming more and more well-known, it is still a subject of ignorance to most of the population and it lacks study and teaching by the faculties of architecture in the country. Modular construction and sustainability are two themes that, when combined, allow a drastic reduction of the environmental impacts that the construction sector currently has on planet Earth. The use of wood in its composition, which is the most sustainable building material available due to its natural renewability and its inherent "eco-friendly "characteristics, makes it an economical, fast and sustainable solution. This study intends to demonstrate the possibilities that this type of construction offers, highlighting the sustainable and ecological characteristics. Therefore, an individual and comparative analysis of three national sustainable modular construction companies is carried out, in order to understand the strategies applied in this type of construction at national level and which are the most viable solutions; culminating in an illustrated manual divided into 3 sections: Strategies for sustainable construction; Choice of Modular System and Practical example of a modular building in Portugal.

Abstract:
The ethno-nationalist conflict in Israel/Palestine has been the subject of significant academic interrogation. However, the political ecological dimensions of that conflict, despite their importance, have gone largely unnoticed. The natural environment, for example, is central to national identity constructs that have long been a source of contestation and friction in the region. The scarcity of vital natural resources (both land and water) needed to sustain nation-building efforts continue to occasion conflict. Access to and control of such resources is divisive and the environment has become a weapon through which to contest the ‘other’. Whilst there is a deep-rooted attachment and importance given to the environment, it has also been a victim to the conflict itself often being seconded to the ‘high political’ aspects prioritised at the governmental level At the opposite end of the spectrum, there are also numerous efforts which attempt to use the environment to promote cooperation/peacebuilding between actors in the conflict. This thesis attempts to unpack the often-overlooked political ecological dimensions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. To do so, it focuses on a number of specific, localized and illustrating case studies in a series of three papers. The first analyses the impact of the Israeli West Bank separation barrier on Palestinian agricultural systems and processes. The second paper, analyses local attempts at Israeli-Palestinian ‘environmental cooperation’ and asserts the need for delving deeper into ‘cooperative’ interactions in order to determine their true nature and effectiveness. The third paper takes the same greater Bethlehem case studies and explores their possible peacebuilding contributions, before suggesting ways to improve their potential in that regard. As well as filling a significant vacuum in Israel/Palestine scholarship, the thesis has broader theoretical and practical relevance. It adds greatly to vibrant contemporary academic discussions, debates, and lines of enquiry pertaining to the relationships between the environment, conflict and peace. It also speaks to recent calls for geographers to research and contribute to ‘a geography of peace’. In a desire to employ a holistic lens (in this case a political ecological one), an inductive approach was pursued to facilitate the emergence of new ideas. That is, instead of having rigid, predefined theories to test, the approach, whilst including key ideas related to the broad conceptual framework, was to remain open-minded to what emerged in discussions with those involved in the scenarios, and through the analysis of a multitude of information sources. Key methods of primary data collection included semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observation. Primary data collection occurred remotely via ‘e-interviews’ between 2012 and 2013, and directly during a period of fieldwork to Israel/Palestine in 2014. A total of 40 interviews were completed. Ethnographic observation included partaking in tours and conducting site visits. The data collected was complemented by the consultation of secondary statistical sources, and visualisation using Geographic Information Systems. Qualitative content analysis was key in complementing the primary data.

Abstract:

Advancements in biomedical signal processing techniques have led Electroencephalography (EEG) signals to be more widely used in the diagnosis of brain diseases and in the field of Brain Computer Interface(BCI). BCI is an interfacing system that uses electrical signals from the brain (eg: EEG) as an input to control other devices such as a computer, wheel chair, robotic arm etc. The aim of this work is to analyse the EEG data to see how humans can control machines using their thoughts. In this thesis the reactivity of EEG rhythms in association with normal, voluntary and imagery of hand movements were studied using EEGLAB, a signal processing toolbox  under MATLAB. In awake people,  primary sensory or motor cortical areas often display 8-12 Hz EEG activity called ’Mu’ rhythm ,when they are not engaged in processing sensory input or produce motor output.  Movement or preparation of movement is typically accompanied by a decrease in this mu rhythm called ’event-related desynchronization’(ERD). Four males, three right handed and one left handed participated in this study. There were two sessions for each subject and three possible types : Imagery, Voluntary and Normal. The EEG data  was sampled at 256Hz , band pass filtered between 0.1 Hz and 50 Hz and then epochs of four events : Left  button press , Right button press, Right arrow ,Left arrow were extracted followed by baseline removal. After this preprocessing of EEG data, the epoch files were studied by analysing Event Related Potential plots, Independent Component Analysis, Power spectral Analysis and Time-Frequency plots. These analysis have shown that an imagination or a movement of right hand cause a decrease in activity in the hand area of sensory motor cortex in the left side of the brain which shows the desynchronization of Mu rhythm and an imagination or a movement of left hand cause a decrease in activity in the hand area of sensory motor cortex in the right side of the brain. This implies that EEG phenomena may be utilised in a Brain Computer Interface operated simply by motor imagery and the present result can be used for classifier development and BCI use in the field of motor restoration

Abstract:
A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a system to communicate with external world through the brain activity. The brain activity is measured by Electro-Encephalography (EEG) and then processed by a BCI system. EEG source reconstruction could be a way to improve the accuracy of EEG classification in EEGbased brain–computer interface (BCI). In this thesis BCI methods were applied on derived sources which by their EEG enhancement it became possible to obtain a more accurate EEG detection and brought a new application to BCI technology that are recognition of writing letters imagery from brain waves. The BCI system enables people to write and type letters by their brain activity (EEG). To this end, first part of the thesis is dedicated to EEG source reconstruction techniques to select the most optimal EEG channels for task classification purposes. Due to this reason the changes in EEG signal power from rest state to motor imagery task was used, to find the location of an active single equivalent dipole. Implementing an inverse problem solution on the power changes by Multiple Sparse Priors (MSP) method generated a scalp map where its fitting showed the localization of EEG electrodes. Having the optimized locations the secondary objective was to choose the most optimal EEG features and rhythm for an efficient classification. This became possible by feature ranking, 1- Nearest Neighbor leave-one-out. The feature vectors were computed by applying the combined methods of multitaper method, Pwelch. The features were classified by several methods of Normal densities based quadratic classifier (qdc), k-nearest neighbor classifier (knn), Mixture of Gaussians classification and Train neural network classifier using back-propagation. Results show that the selected features and classifiers are able to recognize the imagination of writing alphabet with the high accuracy.
BCI controls external devices and interacts with the environment by brain signals. Measured EEG signals over the motor cortex exhibit changes in power related to the movements or imaginations which are executed in motor tasks [1]. These changes declare increase or decrease of power in the alpha (8Hz-13Hz), and beta (13Hz-28Hz) frequency bands from resting state to motor imagery task that known as event related synchronization (in case of power increasing) and desynchronization (in case of power decreasing) [2]. The necessity to communicate with the external world for locked-in state (LIS) patients (a paralyzed patient who only communicates with eyes), made doctors and engineers motivated to develop a BCI technology for typing letters through brain commands. Many researches have been done around this area to ascertain the dream of typing for handicapped. In the brain some regions of the cerebral cortex (motor cortex) are involved in the planning, control, and execution of voluntary movements. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are electrical potential generated by the nerve cells in the cerebral cortex. In order to execute motoric tasks, the EEG signals are appeared over the motor cortex [1]. The measured brain response to a stimulus is called eventrelated potential (ERP). P300-event related potential (ERP) is an evoked neuron response to an external auditory or visual stimulus that is detectable in scalp-recorded EEG (The P300 is evoked potential which occurs across the parieto-central on the skull 300 ms after applying the stimulus). Farwell and Donchin have proven in a P300-based BCI speller [3] that P300 response is a reliable signal for controlling a BCI system. They described the P300 speller, in which alphanumeric characters are represented in a matrix grid of six-by-six matrix. The user should focus on one of the 36 character cells while each row and column of the grid is intensified randomly and sequentially. The P300, observed in EEG signals, is created by the intersection of the target row and column which causes detection of the target stimuli with a probability of 1/6 (in case of high accuracy of flashing operation). Also when the target stimulus is rarely presented in the random sequence of stimuli causes a neural reaction to unpredictable but recognizable event and a P300 response is evoked [3]. Generally when the subject is involved with the task to recognize the targets, the P300 wave happens and the signal amplitude varies with the unlikelihood of the targets. Its dormancy changes with the difficulty of recognizing the target stimulus from the standard stimuli [3].The attended character of the matrix can be extracted by proper feature extraction and classification of P300. A plenty of procedures for feature extraction and classification have been applied to improve the performance of originally reported speller [3], such as stepwise linear discriminate analysis (SWLDA) [4, 5], wavelets [1], support vector machines [6, 7, 8] and matched filtering [9]. Till now, BCI-related P300 research has mostly considered on signals from standard P300 scalp locations. While in [10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16] it has been proven that the use of additional locations, especially posterior sites, may improve classification accuracy, but it has not been addressed to particular offline and online studies. Recently, auditory version improvement of the visual P300 speller allows locked in patients who have problem in the visual system to use the P300 speller system by relating two numbers to each letter which indicate the row and column of letter position [17]. Now a new technology is needed which can substitute a keyboard with no alphabet menu. The technology will be handy for blind people and useful for healthy persons who need to work hands free with their computer or mobile. The aim of this thesis is to improve EEG detection through source localization for a new BCI application to type with EEG signals without using alphabet menu.

Ryan, Christian. "Ego-syntonic obsessions." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31321.

Full text
Abstract:
The supposed synonymity of obsessions and intrusive thoughts is critically examined. It is suggested that there may be distinct differences in the appraisal of classic intrusive thoughts which feature aggressive or sexualised content and the appraisal of contamination fears. This is significant for both the current definition of obsessions and to the cognitive model proposed by Salkovskis (1985, 1989). Following a review of the research into the relationship between intrusive thoughts and obsessions, Salkovskis's cognitive-behavioural model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (Salkovskis, 1985, 1989) is examined and two key papers, which are often cited to support the view that intrusive thoughts in the normal population are synonymous with obsessive thoughts as experienced by OCD patients, are critically appraised. Evidence from a number of phenomenological studies is also considered as an alternative source of information about the nature of obsessions in the clinical population. The development of a new measure, the Obsessive Thoughts Appraisal Scale is reported. This measure was used with both clinical and non-clinical samples (n = 109). It was found to have adequate psychometric properties. The results of the hypothesis testing indicate that judgements of ego-syntonic are not restricted to some small number of patients suffering from overvalued ideation, but rather ego-syntonic appraisals of some obsessions appears to be widespread but closely related to the individual's degree of obsessionality. Furthermore, obsessions concerning contamination were found to be significantly less ego-dystonic than those that concerned aggressive or sexually intrusive thoughts. Suggestions are made for both clinical practice and future research.

Abstract:
Electroencephalographic data recorded on the human scalp can be modeled as a linear mixture of underlying dipolar source generators. The characterization of such generators is the aim of several families of signal processing methods. In this HDR we consider in several details three of such families, namely 1) EEG distributed inverse solutions, 2) diagonalization methods, including spatial filtering and blind source separation and 3) Riemannian geometry. We highlight our contributions in each of this family, we describe algorithms reporting all necessary information to make purposeful use of these methods and we give numerous examples with real data pertaining to our published studies. Traditionally only the single-subject scenario is considered; here we consider in addition the extension of some methods to the simultaneous multi-subject recording scenario. This HDR can be seen as an handbook for EEG source analysis. It will be particularly useful to students and other colleagues approaching the field.

Ruddell, Caroline Deborah. "The besieged ego." Thesis, Brunel University, 2006. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/6529.

Full text
Abstract:
'The Besieged Ego' critically appraises the representation, or mediation, of identity in contemporary film and television shows through a thorough analysis of split and fragmentary characters. As I show, the prevalence of nonautonomous characters in horror, fantasy and psychological based film and television products calls into question the very concept of a unified, 'knowable' identity that can be traced progressively through time with continuity. I use psychoanalysis as an interpretive tool and model in order to effectively understand representations of identity that are not 'whole'; psychoanalysis arguably allows for, and engages with, a splintered or fractured identity as its very premise lies in unknowable psychical forces such as the unconscious. The concept of 'ego' is particularly useful as a concept through which to analyse onscreen representations of identity; the differing definitions of Freud's ego (realist and narcissistic) alongside Lacan's delusional ego allow for an understanding of identity that shifts and is deeply enigmatic, unknowable and in essence confusing. However, representations of split identities can only be fully examined in light of social and cultural contexts; I therefore employ an eclectic range of approaches and methodologies throughout the thesis in order to ascertain what is at stake in the representation and meaning of the double. The form of the double, and cinematic modes and rhetorics used to denote fragmentary identity, is addressed in the thesis through a detailed analysis of texts drawn from a range of industrial and cultural contexts. The double carries significant cultural meanings about what it means to be 'human' and the experience of identity as a gendered individual; I argue that the double, or split identity, has become a 'new myth' that expresses in fictional form our problematic experience of the world as a social, and supposedly whole and autonomous, subject.

Abstract:
TESIS PARA OPTAR AL GRADO DE MAGÍSTER EN MARKETING
Francesco Pontarelli [Parte I], María Fernanda Ramos Alarcón [Parte II]

Abstract:
This thesis deals with wavelet analysis of sleep electroencephalogram to sleep stages scoring. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the theory of EEG signal creation and analysis. The polysomnography (PSG) is also described. This is the method for simultaneous measuring the different electrical signals; main of them are electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyogram (EMG) and electrooculogram (EOG). This method is used to diagnose sleep failure. Therefore sleep, sleep stages and sleep disorders are also described in the present study. In practical part, some results of application of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for decomposing the sleep EEGs using mother wavelet Daubechies 2 „db2“ are shown and the level of the seven. The classification of the resulting data was used feedforward neural network with backpropagation errors.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with analysis and processing of the Sleep Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The scope of this thesis can be split into several areas. The first area is application of the Independent Component Analysis (ICA) method for EEG signal analysis. A model of EEG signal formation is proposed and conditions under which this model is valid are examined. It is shown that ICA can be used to remove non-deterministic artifacts contained in the EEG signals. The second area of interest is analysis of stationarity of the Sleep EEG signal. Methods to identify stationary signal segments and to analyze statistical properties of these stationary segments are presented. The third area of interest focuses on spectral analysis of the Sleep EEG signals. Analyses are performed that shows the processes that form particular parts of EEG signals spectrum. Also, random signals that are an integral part of the EEG signals analysis are performed. The last area of interest focuses on elimination of the transition processes that are caused by the filtering of the short EEG signal segments.
