Abstract:
The household and military retinue of Edward the Black Prince (1330-1376) was created in the early years of the Hundred Years W ar. This thesis examines the role which the retinue played in that conflict and how the administration of the prince's estates contributed to that effort through the provision of troops, supplies and finance. It aims to place the Black Prince and his retainers annuitants and servants in a national context, investigating their role in the Hundred Years War and A nglo-Gascon political society, whilst also highlighting the individual and collective roles that they played in the prince's retinue. It also demonstrates something of the atmosphere evident within the household through the examples of the chivalric ethic and religious attitudes.These elements are also seen in the links that existed between members of the retinue and household that were created by their common service to the Black Prince but also through a variety of other associations ,familial, financial,political and geographical. The particular status of the heir-apparent governed the nature of his retinue and comparisons are drawn with the other great bastard feudal a ssociations of the day, particularly the royal household and the Lancastrian affinity. The thesis concludes with a biographical appendix, which highlights certain careers and summarises those of others with a wide range of links to the Black Prince.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine through the lenses of an environmental historian the myths and the realities of soil exhaustion as this ecological process relates to the developing environmental ethics of tobacco farmers of Prince Edward County, Virginia, from 1850 to 1880. During the nineteenth century the tobacco farms of Southside Virginia experienced three phases in a century long process of ecological change that both influenced and were influenced by events that occurred in human history. The first phase coincides with the agricultural reform movements led by the planters of the late antebellum period. The second phase spans the Civil War years. The third phase begins with emancipation and Reconstruction and lasts until the end of the century when the cause of scientific agriculture was taken up by the agricultural reformers of the Progressive era. With each phase of ecological transition in conjunction with the transition from slave labor to wage labor, the relationship of white men and women and African American men and women to the rural landscape changed, thus creating a diverse, dynamic environmental ethic among the tobacco farmers of Prince Edward County, Virginia.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate spatial changes in the trophic and energy pathways of the benthic community in the shallow shelf waters of the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands (PEI). A combination of stable isotope and fatty acid analyses were used to provide a time-integrated view of the assimilated feeding history of selected components of the PEI benthic community. This study forms part of the larger project entitled “Variability in the Southern Ocean ecosystems” and is a contribution to the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP). During austral autumn 2009, benthic specimens were collected from 10 stations (from depths of 70 to 295 m) in different regions around the PEI: inter-island shelf (upstream, between and downstream of the islands) and nearshore. Historical data were combined with new data collected during 2009 to assess the long-term trends in the feeding ecology of the benthos in the region of the islands. The stable isotope and fatty acid signatures of the benthic suspension- and deposit-feeding organisms generated during this study suggested that these two communities incorporated both phytoplankton and kelp in their diets. Stable isotope, and to a lesser extent fatty acid signatures, indicated that kelp contributed more to the diets of those organisms in close proximity to the kelp beds (nearshore stations) than those from the inter-island region. Overall, however, pelagic phytoplankton was the dominant food source in the diets of all organisms, even for those living near the kelp beds. Notable exceptions were the sponges and bryozoans, in which kelp and phytoplankton contributed similar proportions to their diets, most likely resulting from a size restricted feeding mode. There were, therefore, no distinct spatial differences in the importance of the various food sources. However, fatty acid compositional data indicated increased food quality between and within the lee of the islands compared to upstream. The organisms collected upstream of the PEI had substantially lower quantities of total fatty acids (TFAs) than organisms of the same species collected from nearshore, open shelf or downstream stations. The increased food quality between and within the lee of the islands was likely a result of the “island mass effect”, which reflects increased phytoplankton concentrations at the PEI. The fatty acid profiles of hyperbenthic shrimp Nauticaris marionis, a key species in the PEI ecosystem, revealed no distinct ontogenetic or spatial patterns. This result is in contrast to the stable isotope analyses, which detected both spatial and ontogenetic differences in the diet of the shrimp. Nearshore shrimp were more ₁₃C-enriched than those from the inter-island region, suggesting increased kelp entering the food web within these regions. In addition, the shrimps demonstrated enrichment in δ₁₃C and δ₁₅N signatures with an increase in size, resulting in a relatively distinct separation of size classes, thus reflecting niche separation through their diets. The fatty acid profiles revealed that the shrimp all contained large proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and essential fatty acids (EFAs), indicating that the quality of food consumed was similar among size class and region despite the niche separation and variation in carbon sources utilised. In addition, diatom and dinoflagellate fatty acids (20:5ω3 and 22:6ω3, respectively) occurred in the highest proportions in N. marionis, highlighting the importance of phytoplankton (indirectly) in their diet. These results represent strong evidence that phytoplankton is an importance food source in the PEI ecosystem. The temporal investigation of isotope signatures in the benthos at the PEI indicated that N. marionis demonstrated an overall depletion in δ₁₃C signatures over the period of 1984 to 2009 (nearshore: -2.55 ‰, inter-island: -2.32 ‰). Overall, the benthic community showed similar depletions in δ13C signatures (from -1.96 to -4.70 ‰), suggesting that shifts have occurred in the carbon signatures at the base of the food web. The depletion in δ₁₃C signatures of the benthos at the PEI most likely reflects increased contributions of smaller slow growing phytoplankton cells (more depleted signatures than large fast growing cells) in the diets of these organisms over time. These diet shifts, in turn, suggest a decrease in productivity has occurred at the islands, likely due to a decreased frequency and intensity of the “island mass effect”. Decreased phytoplankton productivity at the PEI likely results from the southward shift in the average position of the sub-Antarctic Front (SAF), most likely in response to climate change, which in turn promotes flow-through conditions rather than retention at the PEI.

Abstract:
This study brings together the wealth of data available for the Prince Edward Islands marine ecosystem and consolidates it into a network, mass-balanced model (using Ecopath). Biomass estimates for the land based top predators show penguins dominate the system for all three time periods assessed (1960s, 1980s and 2000s). The islands appear to have a carrying capacity which may be declining. A consumption model shows a change in prey for the land based top predators from one in which both crustaceans and myctophid fish were of equal importance in the 1960s, to one dominated by myctophids for the 2000s period. The contribution of the sources of primary production were assessed through the ecosystem model with open ocean productivity dominating at all but the smallest scale (shelf region), where the macrophyte production was important. The model describes the marine ecosystem for each of the above mentioned time periods at the scale of the Exclusive Economic Zone and, when compared to other subantarctic and Antarctic systems for which there are ecosystem models, the system was most similar to the neighbouring Kerguelen Islands. An investigation into the ecosystem boundary size was conducted, with all constituents able to satisfy their energetic requirements if considered at the scale of the EEZ. Using the dynamic temporal simulation approach (Ecosim), the model was able to successfully hindcast three past events: the fur seal exploitation, Patagonian toothfish fishery, and the effect of cat predation on small flying birds. In each instance the model performed well for the directly impacted groups. Potential ecosystem effects of climate change were explored through simulations of increasing and decreasing productivity. No single scenario was able to replicate observed patterns and a suite of drivers needs to be considered to reproduce observed patterns. The inclusion of energetic density of prey led to improvements in consumption rate estimates for the static models and should be incorporated into estimates to improve ecosystem model parameterization. The work constitutes the first ecosystem model for the PEIs that can be used as a tool for an ecosystem approach to marine resource management.

While the terrestrial ecosystem of the Prince Edward Island Group has been subject to intensive research, the marine ecosystem has to a large extent been neglected. This together with the possible existence of an "island effect" at these islands, as was first proposed after the visit to these islands of the French vessel Marion Dufresne, led to the initiation of a programme to determine the distribution of standing stocks and the productivity of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the neritic seas of these islands. To do this and before a detailed biological survey could be attempted, it was first necessary to define the physical and chemical properties of the circuminsular waters. This dissertation discusses the results of several surveys to these islands in the light of a possible "island effect" and comments upon processes likely to influence such an effect

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The spatial distribution of animals and plants at different scales is a central theme in ecology. Knowledge of biodiversity distribution is essential, especially with the current threat of climate change and invasion by alien species. Since the impact of climate change and alien species will be, and has already been pronounced in polar regions, information on the current spatial distributions of biota in these regions is critical to predict the consequences of climate change and alien species on the future survival, distribution and abundance of indigenous biota. This study was conducted on the sub- Antarctic Prince Edward Islands (consisting of Marion Island and Prince Edward Island), which have experienced rapid climate changes over the past 50 years. Additionally, a number of alien plant, vertebrate and invertebrate (also microarthropod) species have been introduced to these islands. Since microarthropods (mites and springtails) play an essential role in decomposition and mineralization of plant material on the islands, the loss of microarthropods from decomposer communities might have disastrous results for ecosystem processes. Therefore it is essential to know the current distributions of microarthropods in order to predict future distributions patterns in reaction to climate change and invasive species. In this study, the spatial distribution of mites and springtails inhabiting the cushion plant Azorella selago Hook, were examined at different scales of observation. Firstly, the microarthropod community was examined at a fine scale. The relationship between microarthropod species richness and abundance and plant size, isolation, within-plant variability, grass cover and microclimate variables were investigated. Thereafter, the spatial variability of microarthropod abundances was examined within stands of plants, with statistical methods using varying degrees of locational information to determine if microarthropod abundance is random, regular or aggregated at this scale. Further, the spatial variability of microarthropod communities in A. selago at different altitudes and on different sides of Marion Island, i.e. island-wide scale, was examined. The last scale of observation was the island-wide scale, in which microarthropod assemblages were compared between Marion Island and Prince Edward Island, as well as in different plant species. Microarthropods showed spatial heterogeneity within A. selago plants (higher abundances in eastern and southern sides of plants), island-wide (lower springtail abundance on the eastern side of the island and at high altitudes) and between islands (more alien species on Marion Island). In contrast, microarthropod abundance was not spatially heterogeneous within a stand of plants, i.e. mostly randomly distributed. The possible mechanisms responsible for these patterns differ between scales, and range from temperature and nutrient availability at the within plant and island wide scale to alien species between islands. Climate change is likely to alter these distribution patterns of microarthropods, either directly (unfavourable climate for indigenous species growth, development and dispersal) or indirectly (favouring alien microarthropod species; increase in grass cover on A. selago plants may alter community structure). The information presented here, is essential for predicting the possible impacts of climate change on microarthropods in fellfield ecosystems on sub-Antarctic islands.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die ruimtelike verspreiding van diere en plante op verskillende skale is ‘n sentrale tema in ekologie. Kennis van die verspreiding van biodiversiteit is belangrik, veral met die huidige bedreiging van klimaatsverandering en indringerspesies. Omdat die impak van klimaatsverandering en indringerspesies in die poolstreke alreeds duidelik is en nog meer so sal word, is inligting oor die huidige ruimtelike verspreiding van biota in hierdie streke noodsaaklik. Hierdie studie is op die sub-Antarktiese Prins Edward-eilande (bestaande uit Marion Eiland en Prins Edward Eiland) uitgevoer, waar die klimaat vinnig verander het oor die afeglope 50 jaar. Bykomend is ‘n aantal indringer plant, vertebraat en invertebraat (ook mikroartropood) spesies op die eilande ingebring. Omdat mikroartropoda (myte en springsterte) ‘n baie belangrike rol in ontbinding en mineralisering van plantmateriaal op hierdie eilande speel, sal die verlies van mikroartropoda uit die ontbindingsgemeenskap rampspoedige gevolge vir die prosesse in die ekosisteem hê. Kennis van die huidige verpreiding van mikroartropoda is dus noodsaaklik om die toekomstige verspreidingspatrone, asook oorlewing en volopheid van inheemse spesies in reaksie op klimaatsveranding en indringerspesies, te voorspel. In hierdie studie is die ruimtelike verspreiding van myte en springsterte wat in die kussingplant Azorella selago Hook voorkom, op verskillende ruimtelike skale ondersoek. Eerstens is die mikroartropood gemeenskap op ‘n klein skaal ondersoek. Die verwantskap tussen mikroartropood spesies rykheid en volopheid en plantgrootte, isolasie, binne-plant variasie, gras bedekking en mikroklimaat faktore is ondersoek. Daarna is die ruimtelike variasie van mikroartropood volopheid binne in ‘n plantstand ondersoek deur gebruik te maak van metodes wat verskillende grade van ligging data gebruik. Dit is gedoen om uit te vind of mikroartropood volopheid lukraak, reëlmatig of versameld verspreid is. Verder is die ruimtelike verspreiding van mikroartropood gemeenskappe in A. selago op verskillende hoogtes bo seespieël en op verskillende kante van Marion Eiland ondersoek. Laastens is die mikroartropood gemeenskap op Marion Eiland en Prins Edward Eiland, asook die gemeenskap in verskillende plant spesies vergelyk. Mikroartropoda is ruimtelik heterogeen verspreid binne-in A. selago (meer individue in die oostelike en suidelike kante van plante), asook regoor Marion Eiland (minder springstert individue aan die ooste kant van die eiland asook minder op hoë hoogtes bo seespieël) en tussen eilande (meer indringerspesies op Marion Eiland). In teenstelling hiermee is mikroartropood volopheid ruimtelik homogeen oor ‘n plantstand, dus meestal lukraak verspreid. Die meganismes wat moontlik vir hierdie patrone verantwoordelik is wissel van temperatuur en voedselbeskikbaarheid op die binne-plant en oor die eiland skaal tot indringerspesies op die tussen-eiland skaal. Klimaatsverandering mag waarskynlik mikroartropood verspreidingspatrone direk (ongunstige klimaat vir inheemse spesies se groei, ontwikkeling en verspreiding), of indirek verander (indringer spesies word begunstig; toename in grasbedekking bo-op A. selago mag die gemeenskapstruktuur van mikroartropoda verander). Hierdie inligting is belangrik vir die voorspelling van die moontlike impak van klimaatsverandering op mikroartropoda in klipveld ekosisteme op sub-Antarktiese eilande.

Abstract:
This study aims to uncover the synoptic weather circulation pattern which is associated with the occurrence of needle ice, snowfall and the zero-curtain effect. The method of study was done through an intensive ground climate measurement campaign from April 2008 to May 2009 with a temperature logger installed throughout the recording period. Results from data analyses indicate that the complex changes in climate parameters may lead to an equally complex response in terms of spatial soil frost dynamics and its direct and indirect effects on soil sediment displacement and ecosystem dynamics. Field evidence in the study suggests that on Marion Island needle ice developed in temperatures as high as -0.2 ºC in strong winds. This confirms that the wet environment of Marion Island, which is dominated by diurnal soil frost is fundamentally different from seasonal frost and permafrost environments. The scoria material is susceptible to needle ice growth and the compacted soil alters the micro-climatology of the affected area making it more susceptible to the formation of needle ice. Soil moisture for needle ice formation and growth is provided by the misty conditions associated with the advent of the cold front (pre-cyclonic). Furthermore, observations of needle ice on Marion show that needles are mostly clear with no sediment inclusion. This is indicative of needle ice formation that has not been interrupted by a shortage of moisture. The zero-curtain effect on Marion Island can occur either as a response to the thawing of the soil after the seasonal freeze. The synoptic assessment of snowfall on Marion Island indicates that; snowfall is associated with the passage of a cold front linked to a strong meridional system of low pressure just south of the island.

There have been several expeditions to Marion and Prince Edward Islands (MPE) which have sampled the marine fauna and flora, including those of the British ships Challenger (1873-1876) and Discovery (1935), and subsequent surveys by the French ship Marion-Dufresne (Arnaud and Hureae, 1979). South African research began with land-based surveys that concentrated on the intertidal and shallow-water benthos and included work by Fuller (1967), Van Zinderen Bakker et al 1971 ), De Villiers (1976) and Blankley & Grindley (1985). More recently this research was extended offshore by the University of Cape Town, with dredging being undertaken from the SA Agulhas over the period 1984-1989 (GM Branch, Attwood, Gianakouras and ML Branch, 1993) and a quantitative SCUBA survey at depths of 5, 10 and 15m at Bullards Bay, Transvaal Cove and Trypot Point (Beckley and Branch, 1992). The identification of benthic species posed a major problem during each of the recent surveys, despite the fact that the material from earlier expeditions has been referred to international taxonomic authorities. Reference specimens are not available or are housed in European collections. The number of species from the area has also increased considerably. Previous work in the subantarctic has been undertaken by scientists from a large number of countries and over a protracted period of time. Isolated detailed monographs reviewing particular groups have appeared, but these remain largely inaccessible to the more generalist worker. Furthermore many are now out-of-date in terms of the nomenclature employed. This situation prompted the compilation of the present series of identification guides, which are intended to synthesise information on the benthic invertebrate fauna of Marion and Prince Edward Islands and to present it in a manner that will allow relatively easy identification by the non-specialist.

Abstract:
Carapace length, as the best measure of N. marionis body size, is precisely defined. It is shown that N. marionis is a partially protandric hermaphrodite. N. marionis appear to hatch just before April each year, with a little hatching persisting until May. The vast majority of juveniles develop into males. The majority of males transmutate into females in their third year. By April/May the transmutation is probably complete. Reproduction can occur before all male secondary characteristics have been lost. A small minority of individuals develop directly into females without passing through a male phase. At least some of these females can be initially recognized after they have developed mature ovaries by the presence of appendices internae on their first pleopods, a male copulatory structure which all juvenile N. marionis possess. Too few gravid females were recovered to make any statement on whether spawning can occur before this structure is lost. Such females may lose their first pleopod appendices internae in one moult, possibly just before spawning, which may be in late April/early May. Such individuals seem to mature into ovigerous females at a slightly smaller carapace length than do the majority of females which have had a male-phase past. A few females which have passed through a male phase seem to begin developing ovaries at about this small carapace length as well. Once the appendices internae have been lost there appears to be no way of identifying any given female's past life-history. It would seem that during the first year of life N. marionis survive in undetected localities, moult into juveniles, and then settle amongst the benthos from the plankton. Diurnal vertical migration then occurs up to an unknown larger size. It is not known whether the larvae are initially planktonic or not. It is possible that settling of small N. marionis onto the benthos only begins after November. Whether the appendices masculinae of some males only begin growing after they have settled Abstract XIX onto the benthos is unknown, but for the majority at least this begins whilst they are planktonic juveniles. Individuals older than five years are undetectable using samples of the sizes analyzed in this thesis, but they may well persist until quite an advanced age. Niche separation between smaller and larger N. marionis individuals may occur. Diel vertical migration may occur to some extent amongst large N. marionis. Itinerant euphausiids may contribute substantially to the maintenance of top predator populations at the archipelago, either through direct predation by those predators or via predation by N. marionis, which in turn are consumed by those predators. N. marionis itself is an opportunistic feeder, although the majority of its prey seem to be suspension feeders, both benthic and pelagic. In multisample situations, ageing of N. marionis cohorts is made less subjective if one utilizes the phenomenon of synchronized sexual inversion. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for N. marionis are tentatively identified as k = 0.2353/year, L_ = 12.69mm, to = -0.2828 years and WW_ = 2.03g. This thesis examines the political theory of deliberative democracy, as elucidated by Habermas, through a case study of the electoral reform process in Prince Edward Island. For deliberative democrats like Habermas, public debate ideally possesses an epistemic, or truth-tracking, dimension. After a through discussion of the reform process in that jurisdiction, complemented by interviews with important actors in that process, the public debate on electoral reform in PEI is evaluated in terms of its correspondence with the idealistic presuppositions of deliberative democracy. It is argued that, due to low levels of public knowledge and problematic media coverage of the issue, the PEI electoral reform process provides little empirical support for the theory of deliberative democracy. Examining the dynamics of this case of public deliberation allows us to identify the factors that impede reasoned public deliberation in contemporary society.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Evidence for widespread ecological impacts due to rapid climate change is on the increase, with further warming predicted over the next century. This increase in warming has lead to organisms adjusting their distribution range and where this is not possible organisms must cope with the stressful environments in a different way. One potential way to handle environmental stress is via a mechanism known as phenotypic plasticity, which allows an organism to express different phenotypes depending on the biotic or abiotic environment in a way that may alter that organism's fitness. Acclimation temperatures can potentially cause plastic (reversible and irreversible) changes in the response of individuals to stressful experimental conditions that could increase their survival. The issue of whether this acclimation will be beneficial to the organism or not remains contentious, with support offered both for and against the idea of beneficial acclimation. The aims of the investigation were to determine the thermal limits of five ameronothrid mite species (Halozetes marinus, H marionensis, H belgicae, H. fulvus and Podacarus auberti) from varying terrestrial habitats and to test whether there is beneficial acclimation on the thermal traits. Along with the beneficial acclimation hypothesis several alternative hypotheses were also tested. In addition, locomotor performance was determined as it has been suggested that locomotion performance is a reliable and practical measure of potential fitness of animals. The same hypotheses testing the effects of acclimation temperature on the thermal limits were tested on three performance traits; performance breadth, optimum speed and optimum temperature. Support for beneficial acclimation was found in the performance breadth and optimum speed traits for all species except for Halozetes marinus. For the optimum temperature trait the prediction for the compensation hypothesis was met and that of the beneficial acclimation hypothesis rejected, with the only exception again being that of H marinus. In the case of the locomotor performance traits the prediction for the beneficial acclimation hypothesis in the performance breadth and optimum speed traits are the same for that of the compensation hypothesis, therefore the overall response of the more terrestrial mite species is one of compensation. However, support for beneficial acclimation was not found in the thermal limit traits of all five species, with the higher acclimation temperatures (specifically 150 C) resulting in negative responses in LLT in H. marinus and H. belgicae, and in ULT in H. fulvus. Phenotypic flexibility varied between marine and terrestrial species. The less variable marine environment showed lower flexibility than that of terrestrial species in the performance breadth trait and optimum temperature trait, but there was a lack of variation between the marine and terrestrial species in the temperature tolerance traits. These results show that the effects of acclimation on various traits, especially fitness related traits, are complex and require more attention if the consequences are to be fully explained. This study therefore provides insight into the effects of acclimation on performance traits and thermal limit traits and has implications for the evolution of plastic responses in terrestrial arthropods.

Increasingly, gastronomy is playing a role in people’s motivation for travel, and destinations are making food and beverages their main attraction. This study explored the growing field of gastronomic tourism, a type of niche tourism, through the theoretical framework of destination branding theory. Using a qualitative case study research design, this research examined the branding of the emergent region of Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada as a gastronomic niche tourism destination from the perspective of tourism industry players. Findings indicated that the region turned to gastronomic tourism due to its agricultural history and need for economic development. It was also found that tourism industry players utilized the processes of brand identity, product development, collaboration, support and communication to brand the region. This study contributes scholarly and practical knowledge to the areas of tourism and branding, by providing insight into the development, management and promotion of destination brands.

Penguins are one of the largest consumers of marine resources in the Southern Ocean and spend most of their lives at sea. Although the last four decades have seen technological advancements that have considerably expanded our knowledge about their at-sea behaviour, there is still much to be learned. Given the rapid ongoing ecosystem changes in the Southern Ocean, it is vital to better understand, firstly, how penguins respond to environmental variability, and secondly, how such changes alter ecological relationships between sympatric species. Being flightless, travel is slower and more costly for penguins than flying seabirds. This constrains their ability to find resources, particularly during the breeding season when they must regularly return to the colony to provision offspring. As penguins are colonial nesters, high foraging pressure near the colony can limit available resources, enhancing potential intra- and interspecific competition. At many localities, ecologically similar penguin species breed sympatrically. In such cases, co-existence is only thought possible through ecological segregation in space, time and/or diet. At the Prince Edward Islands, approximately 302,000 pairs of macaroni Eudyptes chrysolophus and 80,000 pairs eastern rockhopper E. chrysocome filholi penguins breed sympatrically. These populations are closer to parity than at any other locations where two eudyptid species breed sympatrically. Populations of both species at the Prince Edward Islands have declined in the last two decades, but drivers of these declines are poorly understood. The primary aim of this thesis was to better understand the foraging strategies of macaroni and rockhopper penguins at the islands and identify aspects of their ecology that allow them to co-exist. The secondary focus was to investigate how each species responds to environmental variability and assess how ecological interactions between species might be altered in an era of rapid global change. To study the at-sea habitat use and diving behaviour of penguins during chick-rearing and pre-moult periods, I used GPS loggers and time-depth recorders. To track penguins during the winter I used geolocation loggers and satellite transmitters. Stable isotope analyses were used to investigate trophic ecology during late winter, summer and pre-moult periods. During the breeding season, both species primarily foraged in pelagic waters beyond the shelf break (> 3000 m), with macaroni penguins foraging slightly farther offshore on average. However, rockhopper penguins breeding adjacent to the inter-island shelf foraged in shallow waters (< 200 m) over the shelf. Both species dived to similar depths (40 to 60 m), but macaroni penguins dived deeper more often. The diet of both species was dominated by two krill species (Thysanoessa vicina and Euphausia vallentini). Diving behaviour varied between years, with both species diving deeper when the SAF was located farther away and geostrophic flow was reduced. During these conditions, macaroni penguins fed on a larger proportion of myctophids whereas rockhopper penguins resorted to less energy-dense nototheniids. This highlights contrasting responses to periods of low krill availability. During the pre-moult period, habitat preferences were similar between species, with penguins travelling up to 1000 km south to forage in Antarctic Zone waters (SST 3-4 °C). However, a three-week difference in departure dates minimised spatiotemporal overlap between species. Diving behaviour was similar between species, but macaroni penguins performed more deep dives and encountered thermoclines more often. Stable isotope analyses revealed that macaroni penguins fed on a greater proportion of fish than rockhopper penguins, and revealed species-specific spatial responses to changes in primary productivity, with macaroni penguins travelling farther south in less productive years. During the 6-month long winter sojourn, macaroni penguins generally foraged in cooler waters (SST ~ 3 °C) compared to rockhopper penguins (5-6 °C). However, stable isotope analyses revealed that trophic and spatial overlap were high during late winter. Both species associated with mesoscale eddies and submesoscale filaments, suggesting that these features play an important role in aggregating prey during the resource-limited winter months. In summary, it appears that subtle differences exist to minimise competitive overlap between macaroni and rockhopper penguins. The three-week difference in the onset of breeding is integral to minimising competitive overlap during late winter, brood-guard/crèche, pre-moult and immediately following the moult. This allochrony staggers the peak energy demands of rockhopper penguins to reduce overlap with macaroni penguins. The larger-bodied macaroni penguins are capable of diving deeper, for longer and more efficiently than rockhopper penguins, which increases their behavioural flexibility and fitness by minimising stresses associated with reduced krill availability. Such differences in diving behaviour may explain contrasting population trends at the islands and suggests that rockhopper penguins may continue to decline at a faster rate than macaroni penguins if ongoing climate change continues to reduce prey availability around the Prince Edward Islands.

A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN examines the Kennedy Administration’s contribution to the restoration of public education in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and determines if those actions support the dominant narrative of Kennedy’s overall civil rights record – a historical assessment generally generated from a few acute crises. For five consecutive years (1959-1964), in defiance of federal court orders, the county board of supervisors refused to levy taxes to operate public schools, marking Prince Edward County as the only locale in the nation without free public education. The county leadership organized a segregated private school system for the 1,400 white children, but afforded no formal education for the 1,700 African American students. The Kennedy Administration inherited the Prince Edward County school situation – a crisis that threatened to cripple a generation, and, if replicated, destroy public education. In the Prince Edward County school dilemma, the Kennedy Administration took proactive measures, proved sympathetic to the plight of African Americans, challenged Virginia’s congressional delegation, and appointed federal judges that supported President Kennedy’s civil rights agenda. The Prince Edward County story generally, and the federal government’s actions specifically, have been virtually overlooked by historians. A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN challenges scholars to re-evaluate the Kennedy Administration’s civil rights record by including all of the civil rights events of the Kennedy years, thus developing a thorough, comprehensive assessment. A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN is the product of the study of unpublished archival documents, oral histories, interviews, newspaper reports, and secondary sources. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Climate sets range limits in many taxa, and as climate changes, the ranges that plants and animals occupy are altered. The responses of species to climate change involve either migration or local adaptation. An investigation of the local physiological adaptation shown by indigenous and alien arthropods to temperature acclimation formed the primary focus of this study. Increased environmental temperatures favour the establishment of alien species on Southern Ocean Islands. The first records of Porce/lio scaber Latreille, 1804 (Isopoda, Porcellionidae) and an Aphidius wasp species from Marion Island were documented here. The alien wasp was discovered in 2003 and had a current known distribution along the east coast of Marion Island. Both isopods and wasps were reproducing successfully on Marion Island. The wasp species is an aphid parasitoid and had been found mummifying the alien aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. These introductions highlighted the ongoing conflict between use and conservation on the Southern Ocean Islands. Despite considerable work on the upper and lower lethal limits of insects, several major taxa have received little attention. Here this issue was addressed and the lower and upper thermal tolerances and cold hardiness strategy of Antarciopsocus jeanneli Badonnel (Psocoptera: Elipsocidae) from sub-Antarctic Marion Island was investigated. A. jeanneli is freeze intolerant, and more specifically, moderately chill tolerant. Field fresh A. jeanne li had a mean supercooling point (SCP) of -11.1oC, whereas LTSO was -7.7°C, indicating pre-freeze mortality. A. jeanneli responded to acclimation: mean SCP increased from -IS.8°C at a treatment temperature ofO°C, to -7.3°C at ISOC. Investigations of the responses to acclimation of upper and lower lethal limits and limits to activity in insects have focussed primarily on Drosophila. Halmaeusa atriceps (Staphylinidae) was examined for thermal tolerance responses to acclimation, and seasonal acclimatization. In summer and winter, lower lethal temperatures of adults and larvae were c. -7.6 ± 0.03 and -11.1 ± 0.06 °C, respectively. Supercooling points (SCPs) were more variable, with winter SCPs of -S.4 ± 0.4 °C in larvae and -6.3 ± 0.8 °C in adults. The species appeared to be chill susceptible in summer and moderately freeze tolerant in winter, thus showing seasonal acclimatization. Critical thermal minima varied between -3.6 ± 0.2 and -0.6 ± 0.2 °C in larvae, and from -4.1 ± 0.1 to -0.8 ± 0.2 °C in adults. These findings were in keeping with the general pattern found in insects, although this species differed in several respects from others found on Marion Island. In this study the differential responses of indigenous and invasive springtails to temperature were explicitly examined in the context of the beneficial acclimation hypothesis (BAH) and its alternatives. In particular, the thermal acclimation responses of desiccation resistance, supercooling ability, lower and upper thermal limits were compared. Invasive springtails (Pogonognathellus jlavescens, Isotomurus palustris and Ceratophysella denticulata) did not display greater phenotypic flexibility than indigenous springtails (Cryptopygus antarcticus and Tullbergia bisetosa), but did perform better under high temperature conditions. Indigenous species, however, performed better under low temperature conditions. In most cases the BAH was not supported, or could not be distinguished from its alternatives. The prediction that invasive species will outperform indigenous species as climates on Southern Ocean Islands warm was supported. Because temperature plays such a large role in the distribution, abundance and physiological tolerances of invertebrates, microhabitat temperatures along an altitudinal gradient (0 to 800 m above sea level (asi)) were investigated over a two-year period on Marion Island. Mean microhabitat temperatures were comparable to those from previous studies for Southern Ocean Islands, and declined with increasing altitude. The 800 m asl site had the most severe microclimate (highest absolute maximum, lowest absolute minimum and the highest frequency of freeze-thaw cycles). Year one was substantially colder than year two, indicating that interannual variation in microclimate conditions could be responsible for substantial mortality amongst. invertebrate populations. Indeed, indigenous species were best able to tolerate the high incidence of low temperatures at high altitudes, whereas alien species appeared to be confined to lower altitudinal sites on Marion Island, possibly as a consequence of extreme low temperatures at higher altitudes.

Inheemse spesies op Marion Eiland toon hoër.toleransies tot lae temperature as uiheemse spesies, laasgenoemde kom slegs voor by laer hoogtes bo seespieël, waar ekstreme ternperatuur-toestande dalk minder volop is. Klimaatsverwarming mag egter tot 'n toename in ekstreme weerstoestande lei op Marion Eiland, wat aansienlike mortaliteit in invertebraat populasies kan veroorsaak.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Marion Island is situated approximately 2600 km southeast of Cape Town and is the larger of the two islands that comprise the Prince Edward Island group. During past glaciation events, Marion was partially covered by ice with fauna and flora confined to isolated refugia across the island. As a result of these long-term isolation events, it is postulated that species predating these glaciation events might show geographic partitioning of genetic variation. Subsequently, the majority of Southern Oceanic islands have a history of sealing activities with vessels frequenting various islands in their hunt for seals. These combined visits to several islands could have facilitated the introduction of alien species, or the reintroduction of species already present on islands. These incidents, combined with more recent scientific voyages, have led to the establishment of several exotic species on Marion Island. Two indigenous Collembola species (Cryptopygus antarcticus (Willem, 1901) and Tullbergia bisetosa (Börner, 1903)) were chosen as model species to investigate the possible effects of glaciation on the spatial distribution of genetic variation on indigenous species. Given the negative impact that alien taxa have on indigenous species and ecosystems, the phylogeographic population structure of the recently introduced Isotomurus cf. palustris (Müller, 1876) was determined and compared to those described for the two indigenous species. To address these questions, two mitochondrial DNA genes were targeted: cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome oxidase subunit II (COII). These genes were sequenced (GENBANK accession numbers DQ147289-DQ147558) and analysed using, amongst others, AMOVA (Analysis of Molecular Variance), SAMOVA (Spatial Analysis of Molecular Variance) and NCA (Nested Clade Analysis). As expected, the two indigenous species showed distinct signs of population expansion, whilst the recently introduced species exhibits little genetic variance across its range. The life histories of species have an influence on their resultant genetic signature; therefore life history parameters were incorporated to explain differences in the phylogeographic patterns observed for these three species.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Marion Eiland is die groter van twee eilande wat die Prins Edward eilandgroep vorm, ongeveer 2600 km suid-oos vanaf Kaapstad. Gedurende glasiasie episodes in die verlede, was Marion gedeeltelik met ys bedek en fauna en flora was geisoleer in klein gedeeltes van die eiland wat beskut was. As gevolg van hierdie langtermyn isolasie word daar voorgestel dat spesies wat op die eiland was voor hierdie gebeurtenisse plaasgevind het, ‘n geografiese verdeling van genetiese variasie sal toon. Sedertdien het die meerderheid van die eilande in die Suidelike Oseaan ook ‘n geskiedenis van skepe wat op een of meer van die eilande aangedoen het in die jag op robbe. Hierdie besoeke deur die robjagters aan die eilande het meegebring dat daar eksotiese spesies op die eiland aangekom het of dat spesies wat reeds op die eiland voorgekom het, opnuut daar geland het. Abstract:
A detailed hydrographic and biological survey was carried out in the region of the South-West Indian Ridge during April 2004. Altimetry and hydrographic data have identified this region as an area of high flow variability. Hydrographic data revealed that here the Subantarctic Polar Front (SAF) and Antarctic Polar Front (APF) converge to form a highly intense frontal system. Water masses identified during the survey showed a distinct separation in properties between the northwestern and southeastern corners. In the north-west, water masses were distinctly Subantarctic (>8.5°C, salinity >34.2), suggesting that the SAF lay extremely far to the south. In the southeast corner water masses were typical of the Antarctic zone, showing a distinct subsurface temperature minimum of <2.5°C. Total integrated chl-a concentration during the survey ranged from 4.15 to 22.81 mg chl-a m[superscript (-2)], with the highest concentrations recorded at stations occupied in the frontal region. These data suggest that the region of the South-West Indian Ridge represents not only an area of elevated biological activity but also acts as a strong biogeographic barrier to the spatial distribution of zooplankton.

The subantarctic Prince Edward Islands (PEIs, 47◦S-38◦E) are classified as isolated and hostile regions, in which the terrestrial and marine ecosystems are relatively simple and extremely sensitive to perturbations. The island’s location, between the Subantarctic Front (SAF) and the Polar Front (PF), bordering the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) provides an ideal natural laboratory for studying how organisms, ecological processes and ecosystems respond to a changing climate in the Southern Ocean. Recent studies have proposed that climate changes reported at the islands may correspond in time to a southward shift of the ACC and in particular of the SAF. This southward migration in the geographic position of major ocean fronts is likely to coincide with dramatic changes in the distribution of species and total productivity of this region. However, there are other sources of variability in the hydrodynamic conditions around the PEIs: upstream of the islands, at the South West Indian Ridge (SWIR), a region of high eddy kinetic activity produces mesoscale features that directly irrigate the PEIs and may impact their marine environment. Based on satellite altimetry in that region, the positions of the SAF and PF were found to be highly variable at interannual and monthly time scales. They also revealed a significant long-term southward trend which was highlighted at the Southern Ocean scale. The mesoscale activity also showed an interannual and intra-annual variability and a decrease in eddy kinetic energy over 24 years was observed in the region. At a more local scale, we highlighted that the archipelago’s environment was impacted by the mesoscale features produced at the SWIR. The temperature, the mixed layer and velocities recorded between the islands were clearly affected by the eddies passing in the vicinity of the PEIs. Moreover, a large signal dominating the main current time series appeared to be a tidal signal, another important driver of variability of the circulation in between the two islands. On a second hand, an idealised model configuration was designed for the PEIs region to study the mesoscale eddy properties and the physical mechanisms of their formation at the ridge. The Eddy Available Potential Energy revealed a maximum of energy around 800 m depth, confirming the deep reaching characteristic of the eddy originated in the region and suggested the presence of a local energy source at this depth. This eddies activity was shown to be the result of a combination of barotropic and baroclinic instabilities occurring at the ridge. Finally, we investigated on the potential consequences of a southward shift of the SAF in the region of the islands. Because the model was idealised, it allowed us to simulate an SAF southward shift by shifting the initial and boundary conditions. The main result was the clear decrease of mesoscale activity in the region which could potentially impact the ecosystems of the PEIs.

The habitat associations between the caridean shrimp Nauticaris marionis and sessile epibenthic assemblages and substratum types of the Sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands were investigated. Twenty five stations, varying in substratum type, depth and location on the shelf and slope around the islands were sampled photographically with a towed benthic camera sled. At each station the substratum type was classified, sessile epibenthic cover was quantified through the use of digital quadrats and shrimp density was estimated. Results add to the broadly described distribution patterns of N. marionis by identifying specifically the habitat characteristics they generally utilize. The distribution of N. marionis was found to be influenced by a combination of substratum and sessile epibenthic assemblages, but not substratum type alone. Shrimp inhabited stations with >50 % biogenic cover on mud and gravel substrata, but were not found at stations with rocky-sand or rocky-mud substrata. Their distribution appears to also be influenced by depth, as shrimp were only found within a depth range of 50 - 160 m in this study. A strong correlation was found between N. marionis density and depth. Shrimp were found both inshore around the islands, and on the relatively shallow saddle between the islands. In comparison with previous studies, N. marionis was found at similar, if not higher, densities in this study, although they occupied a narrower depth range.

L’archipel du Prince Édouard est situé dans le Courant Circumpolaire Antarctique, entre le Front Subantarctique (SAF) et le front polaire (PF). Les positions de ces fronts se sont révélées très variables aux échelles interannuelles et mensuelles et ont montré une tendance à long terme à migrer vers le sud dans la région. L'activité tourbillonnaire, observée à la dorsale sud-ouest indienne, en amont de l’archipel, a également affiché une variabilité interannuelle et intra-annuelle ainsi qu’une tendance à la baisse sur ces 24 dernières années. A une échelle plus locale, nous avons souligné que les conditions aux îles sont impactées par ces tourbillons mésoéchelle produits en amont. La marée a également été mise en évidence comme jouant un rôle non négligeable dans la variabilité de la circulation entre les îles. Une configuration idéalisée a été mise en place pour la région afin d’étudier les propriétés des tourbillons et les mécanismes physiques à l’origine de leur formation. L'énergie potentielle tourbillonnaire disponible a révélé un maximum d'énergie aux alentours de 800 m de profondeur, confirmant le caractère « deep-reaching » des tourbillons. Cette activité tourbillonnaire a été montrée comme étant le résultat d'une combinaison d’instabilités barotropes et baroclines. Enfin, nous avons enquêté sur les conséquences potentielles d'une migration vers le sud du SAF dans la région des îles. Le modèle étant idéalisé, il nous a permis de simuler un déplacement vers le sud en déplaçant les conditions initiales ainsi que les conditions aux limites. Le principal résultat a été la nette diminution de l'activité mésoéchelle dans la région, ce qui pourrait avoir un impact sur les écosystèmes de l’archipel du Prince Édouard

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Climate has shown some remarkable changes over the past century, especially at the polar and sub-polar regions. Southern Ocean Islands provide good models for studies related to climate change effects, since effects may be evident in the short term and may also be clearer. Marion Island is an example of such a system with a harsh abiotic environment, and low species richness often vulnerable to change. Climate change is predicted, and also reported, to have biological consequences on plant communities, affecting the phenology, morphology, and the interaction between individuals and species. This study examines the association between the keystone plant species, Azorella selago Hook. (Apiaceace), and its dominant epiphyte Agrostis magellanica Lam. (Poaceae). Two complimentary approaches were used, one observational and the other experimental. The main objective for the observational study was to quantify bioticallyrelevant microclimate temperature, as well as the morphology, epiphyte load and phenology of A. selago at three different altitude sites on Marion Island. This provided information on baseline variation for understanding specific variability in plant response to the experimental part of this study, against which future patterns arising from biological monitoring can be compared. Studying plants at different altitudes provides a possible analogue for temperature-related climate change consequences for the ecology of A. selago, and its interaction with A. magellanica. The microclimate temperature associated with A. selago differed between the three sites examined. This difference was related to local topographic conditions and altitude differences. Cushion size differed distinctively between the three altitude sites, with this difference related to environmental heterogeneity such as differences in age and substrate structure. Azorella selago annual growth rate was estimated through stem length and the number of leaves on both exposed and shaded stems. Within-site variability, as well as epiphyte cover were found to be the contributing factors on A. selago annual growth rate. This highlights the importance of site-specificity when estimating growth rate within and between different altitude sites. Leaf characteristics differed between the sites, with this attributed to local habitat conditions, such as topography, as well as epiphyte cover. As expected, the difference in leaf size between exposed and shaded leaves demonstrated a larger specific leaf area on leaves shaded by A. magellanica. Agrostis magellanica abundance and density were altitudinally related, with A. selago demonstrating facilitation effects on A. magellanica. The trend shown in this study suggests that in spite of general facilitative effect of A. selago on A. magellanica towards higher altitudes, the abiotic environmental threshold for A. magellanica occurs at lower altitudes than it does for A. selago. Phenological differences were also apparent between the three sites. The objectives of the experimental part of this study were to quantify the effect of the dominant epiphyte, A. magellanica on biotically-relevant microclimatic temperatures, as well as on the phenology and physical condition of A. selago. Different treatments were applied to cushions at the three altitude sites to examine the shading effect of epiphytic A. magellanica on cushion plants, as well as the effect of treatment-related disturbance. Azorella selago microclimate temperature showed no significant difference between treatments, suggesting that on average epiphytic A. magellanica cover has no effect on cushion microclimate temperature. The percentage of flower budding and flowering of A. selago was negatively related to epiphyte cover. Cushion vitality was also responsive to epiphyte cover, with higher vitality scores on low grass covered cushions than on high grass cushions. This shows that A. magellanica competes with A. selago, while A. selago facilitates A. magellanica. Heavy epiphyte numbers impose negative effects on A. selago vegetative and reproductive performance, as well as cushion vitality. Therefore, the results of this research show that the vegetative and reproductive performance of A. selago and cushion vitality are likely to be negatively affected under ongoing climate change on Marion Island if this brings about heavier epiphyte loads on this keystone cushion plant species.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In die afgelope eeu het die klimaat in die Antarktiese en sub-Antarktiese gebiede merkwaardige verandering getoon. Die Suidelike See Eilande dien as goeie modelle vir studies verwant aan die gevolge van klimaatsverandering, aangesien die kort termyn effekte in die gebiede duideliker mag wees in die toekoms. Marion Eiland is ‘n voorbeeld van so ‘n sisteem, met ‘n ruwe abiotiese omgewing en lae spesies rykheid, wat vatbaar is vir verandering. Daar word voorspel, en is reeds bevind dat klimaatsverandering biologiese gevolge op plant gemeenskappe het, in terme van morfologie, fenologie en die interaksie tussen individue en spesies. Hierdie studie ondersoek die assosiasie tussen die hoeksteen plant spesie, Azorella selago (Apiaceace), en sy dominante epifietiese gras, Agrostis magellanica Lam. (Poaceae). Die studie is op twee komplimentêre maniere benader, naamlik deur waarneming en eksperiment. Die hoof doel van die studie was om die biotiese belang van mikroklimaat temperatuur te kwantifiseer, en die hoeveelheid epifiete, die morfologie en die fenologie van A. selago te bepaal by drie verskillende hoogtes op Marion Eiland. Daar is gevind dat die faktore wat bygedra het tot die jaarlikse groeitempo van A. selago, varieër binne die verskillende liggings, en bedekking deur epifiete. Dit beklemtoon die belang van spesifisiteit van ligging wanneer groeitempo in en tussen die liggings van verskillende hoogtes bepaal word. Daar was ‘n negatiewe verwantskap tussen die hoeveelheid epifiete op A. selago en die persentasie blomme en blomknoppe op die kussingplante. Die plante se vitaliteit was ook afhanklik van epifiet bedekking, met ‘n hoër vitaliteit telling vir kussingplante bedek met lae gras as die bedek met hoë gras. Dit toon dat A. magellanica met A. selago wedywer, terwyl A. selago vir A. magellanica fasiliteer. Hoë epifiet getalle het negatiewe effekte op A. selago se vegetatiewe en reproproduktiewe nakoming, asook die kussingplante se vitaliteit. Die resultate van hierdie studie toon dus dat die vegetatiewe en reproduktiewe nakoming van A. selago en kussingplant vitaliteit heel moontlik negatief geaffekteer sal word indien klimaatsverandering op Marion Eiland hoër epifiet getalle op die sleutel kussingplant spesie tot gevolg sal hê.

Abstract:
The world's tundra regions can be considered as the last unexploited terrestrial biome on the earth's surface. Bryophytes contribute significantly to primary production and nutrient cycling in tundra habitats but received considerably less attention than the vascular plants during research for the Tundra Biome Project of the International Biological Programme in the 1970s. The IBP synthesis recognised this and called for more bryophyte production data and improved methodology in future studies. The synthesis also identitied the need for more information on within-site variability, energy/chlorophyll relationships and mineral nutrient studies where tundra bryophyte production patterns are concerned. Marion Island in the sub-Antarctic has an oceanic "tundra" type of vegetation, and the island offers the characteristics of an ideal "natural laboratory" for conducting fundamental ecological research particularly in the field of primary production and energy flow. Studies at Marion Island paralleled those of the IBP but also concentrated on the vascular component of the vegetation. Bryophytes contribute up to 60% of the biomass and 90% of plant cover in the mires that dominate the well-vegetated coastal plain of Marion Island. Following the termination of IBP research therefore it was decided to extend these studies during the 1980s by measuring growth and characterising the major factors influencing growth patterns in Marion Island bryophytes. In this thesis information is given on the physical and biotic environment of Marion Island. Data is presented on the cover, biomass, seasonal and annual production values, and turn-over rates (decomposition) of 15 bryophyte species found across the full range of habit at types at Marion Island. An analysis is also made of growth-associated variables viz. soils, climate, plant energy, chlorophyll. water and mineral nutrient contents. Production was found to be related broadly to moisture-related variables, overlain by nutrient factors in some instances. Higher absolute production figures were obtained than at other tundra sites and interesting phenological data are discussed. The results suggest that decomposition is controlled mainly by tissue degradability factors and that decomposition is more significant than production in controlling biomass accumulation. A model is given for production/decomposition patterns across the range of habitat conditions at Marion Island. Several growth measurement techniques were tested and recommendations are made concerning methodology for future bryophyte production studies. By reference to ecological data collected during the study.

The feeding biology of three euphausiid species, Euphausia vallentini (adults and juveniles), E. longirostris and Nematoscelis megalops was investigated during austral autumn (April/May) of 1998 and 1999, in the vicinity of the Prince Edward Islands (Southern Ocean). Data on the abundance and biomass of these species, estimated from bongo net tows, were investigated. Trophic position was assessed using gut contents and stable nitrogen isotope measurements. Feeding rate and daily carbon ration were estimated using the gut fluorescence and the gut fullness techniques. Vertical migrations into the surface waters at night were found to be strong for Euphausia vallentini adults and juveniles. Associated with these migrations were clear diel feeding patterns. Insufficient data during daylight hours for E. longirostris made it impossible to determine diel feeding patterns, but high feeding activity did occur during dark hours. Nematoscelis megalops did not show any distinct diel feeding pattern, but slightly higher gut fullness indices in the late afternoon suggested that feeding activity may have been highest during this period. For both Euphausia spp. high gut pigment levels were recorded in 1999, which corresponded to higher ambient chlorophyll a concentrations for that year. Highest initial gut pigment levels and highest ingestion rates were found for Euphausia longirostris in both years and lowest values were observed for N. megalops. High phytoplankton and low metazoan contributions to the diet of Euphausia vallentini juveniles, as shown in the gut content analysis, and low stable nitrogen isotope ratios (ð¹⁵N = 1.39±0.31), both indicated that this group was principally herbivorous. The results of gut content analysis of the adults of E. vallentini were similar to those of the juveniles, however, stable nitrogen isotope results showed that there was a higher degree of omnivory (ð¹⁵N = 3.81±0.66). Daily ration estimates from the gut fluorescence and fullness techniques showed that between 3.3 and 25.7 % of E. vallentini adults total daily carbon ration was derived from autotrophic sources. Although the contribution of carnivory to the diet was difficult to determine, the adults of this species may be considered omnivorous. Irrespective of the degree of carnivory, a dietry shift with an increase in size was evident for this species. Gut content analysis for Euphausia longirostris showed that this species consumed large amounts of both phytoplankton and metazoan prey and this was reflected in the stable nitrogen isotope results (ð¹⁵N = 6.88±0.60). These findings were supported by the results of the daily carbon ration estimates which showed that autotrophic carbon contributed between 6.9 and 20.3 % of the daily carbon consumption. The gut content analysis suggested that N. megalops was omnivorous, and the stable nitrogen isotope results place it in a trophic position equivalent to that of E. longirostris (ð¹⁵N = 6.83±0.78). Calculations from daily ration estimates suggested that only 3.1 % in 1998, and 3.2 % in 1999, of the carbon ingested was of autotrophic origin. This species may therefore be considered carnivorous. Implications of the findings of this study are discussed in terms of carbon cycling in the Southern Ocean.

Abstract:
Abstract Several questions pertaining to the marine communities at the Prince Edward Islands are addressed. Firstly, the nature of the 'island-mass effect', and the cause of the frequently recorded diatom blooms in the area are examined. It had been suggested that the cause of the blooms is related to the presence of a Taylor Column-induced, low density, stationary eddy which stabilises the water column. On a cruise in April/May 1989, temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll and primary production were measured at 90 stations in a large grid centred on the islands. These, together with data collected on previous cruises, are used to show that the repeated occurrence of diatom blooms was not a result of nutrient enhancement. No evidence for light-limitation of phytoplankton was found. The evidence and theoretical basis which was used to predict the existence of a Taylor Column is questioned. An alternative hypothesis for explaining the blooms is presented. It is argued that these local blooms are simply the result of seeding by a dormant stock of diatom resting spores from the shallow sediments around the islands. This hypothesis hinges on three observations: (1) the blooms occur only over shallow sediments and are not a feature of the open ocean, (2) the species Chaetoceros radicans has been responsible for the bloom each time the cells were identified, and (3) C. radicans forms a rapidly sinking, heavily silicified, resting spore.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Understanding the responses of species to climate change is a scientific problem that requires urgent attention, especially under current conditions of global climate change. The large and rapid rates of climate change reported for sub-Antarctic Marion Island makes the island highly suitable for studying the biotic consequences of climate change. Furthermore, the extreme environments on the island result in a close coupling of the biotic (e.g. population dynamics) and abiotic (e.g. climate) factors. Therefore, examining the response of the dominant and keystone plant species on the island, Azorella selago Hook. (Apiaceae), to climate-associated environmental change (e.g. temperature) may provide insight into how A. selago and the associated species communities will be affected by climate change. This study described the variability in microclimate temperatures associated with A. selago across altitudinal gradient and between the eastern and western sides of Marion Island. Microclimate temperatures were also compared to the island’s Meteorological data to determine variation between temperatures experienced by A. selago cushion-plants in the field and those recorded at the island’s Meteorological Station. Temperature variation inside and outside A. selago cushions was also examined. Azorella selago cushions were found to have a buffering effect on temperature, such that species occurring epiphytically on A. selago experience more moderate temperatures than the surrounding environment. However, A. selago were found to experience more extreme temperatures than temperatures recorded at the Meteorological Station. Therefore, A. selago may possibly experience greater environmental warming than recorded by the Meteorological Station. While temperatures decline with altitude, temperature conditions on the western side of the island were more temperate than the eastern side. This presents the first record of temperature conditions on the western side of the island. This study also quantified fine-scale (e.g. within-site) and broad-scale (e.g. island-wide) variability patterns of A. selago (morphology, phenology, and epiphyte load) across Marion Island. Altitudinal gradient and climatic exposure at different sides of the island were used to understand the likely effects of climate associated environmental change on this dominant component of the fellfield habitat. Site-specific processes were found to determine the spatial structure of A. selago characteristics at fine-scales. However, broad-scale observations established strong responses of A. selago characteristics to altitudinal gradients and different sides of the island. Azorella selago morphological features (e.g. plant size and leaf size) were found to be more responsive to differences between the eastern and western sides of the island than to altitudinal gradient. Azorella selago micro-morphological features (e.g. leaf trichomes and stomatal densities) were also found to be more responsive to climatic exposure at different sides of the island than to altitudinal gradient. However, differences in A. selago epiphyte density (e.g. Agrostis magellanica) and phenology resembled microclimate temperatures in that they were more responsive to altitudinal gradient than to side of the island differences. From these results it can therefore be predicted that the A. selago of Marion Island is likely to be morphologically fairly resilient to moderate climatic shifts, although at lower altitudes and on the eastern side of the island, it may be outcompeted by the epiphytic grass, Agrostis magellanica. The results also suggest that the warming climate of Marion Island may result in an early occurrence of phenological processes particularly at lower altitudes and the eastern side. Azorella selago at lower altitudes and on the eastern side of Marion Island are therefore expected to largely show more symptoms of climate change (e.g. warming) on this species. Azorella selago is also predicted to move up altitudinal gradients in response to warming.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ’n Begrip van hoe spesies reageer op klimaatsverandering is ’n wetenskaplike vraag wat onmiddellike aandag benodig, veral onder huidige globale klimaatsverandering. Die groot en snelle tempo waarteen klimaatsverandering waargeneem word op sub-Antarktiese Marion Eiland, maak die eiland hoogs geskik om die biotiese gevolge van klimaatsverandering te bestudeer. Verder veroorsaak die uiterste omgewing van die eiland tot ’n nabye koppeling tussen die biotiese (bv. populasie dinamika) en abiotiese (bv. klimaat) faktore. Dus, deur die reaksies van ’n dominante- en sleutel-spesie op die eiland, Azorella selago Hook. (Apiaceae), op klimaat-geassosieerde omgewings verandering (bv. temperatuur) te bestudeer, mag insig verskaf hoe A. selago en geassosieerde spesie gemeenskappe geaffekteer sal word deur klimaatsverandering. Hierdie studie beskryf die wispelturigheid in mikroklimaat temperature geassosieer met A. selago oor ’n hoogte gradiënt asook tussen die oostelike en westelik dele van Marion Eiland. Mikroklimaat temperature was ook vergelyk met die eiland se Meteorologiese data met die doel om die mate van variasie tussen temperature verduur deur A. selago kussing-plante in die natuurlike omgewing met die van die eiland se Meteorologiese stasie te vergelyk. Temperatuur variasie binne en buite A. selago kussing-plante is ook vasgestel. Dit was gevind dat Azorella selago kussing-plante die temperatuur buffer, met die gevolg dat spesies wat epifities op A. selago voorkom, meer gematigde temperature ondervind as die onmiddellike omgewing om die plant. Daar is egter gevind dat A. selago meer uiterste temperature ondervind as temperature gemeet by die Meteorologiese stasie. Dus mag A. selago groter omgewings verwarming ervaar as wat temperature gemeet by die Meteorologiese stasie dui. Terwyl temperatuur afneem met ’n toename in hoogte, was temperatuur aan die westekant van die eiland mere gematig as die oostekant. Dit verskaf die eerste rekord van temperatuur toestande aan die westekant van die eiland. Hierdie studie bepaal ook die fyn-skaal (e.g. binne-terrein) en groot-skaal (e.g. oor die eiland) variasie patrone van A. selago (morfologie, fenologie, en epifiet lading) oor Marion Eiland. Die hoogte gradiënt en klimaat blootstelling aan verskillende kante van die eiland is gebruik om die waarskynlike effekte van klimaats-geassosieerde omgewings verandering op die dominante deel van die felfield habitat te verstaan. Daar is gevind dat terrein spesifieke prosesse die ruimtelike struktuur van A. selago se klein-skaal eienskappe bepaal. Groot-skaalse waarnemings dui egter ’n sterk antwoord van A. selago eienskappe op die hoogte gradiënt en aan verskillende kante van die eiland. Azorella selago morfologiese eienskappe (e.g. plant- en blaar grootte) is gevind om meer te reageer op verskille tussen oostelike en westelike kante van die eiland as op die hoogte gradiënt. Azorella selago mikromorfologiese eienskappe (e.g. blaar trigome en stomata digtheid) is ook gevind om meer te reageer op omgewings blootstelling tussen verskillende kante van die eiland as op die hoogte gradiënt. Verskille in A. selago epifiet digtheid (e.g. Agrostis magellanica) en fenologie het egter mikroklimaat temperature gevolg, in dat beide meer gereageer het op die hoogte gradiënt as eiland-kant verskille. Hierdie resultate voorspel dus dat dit waarskynlik is dat A. selago van Marion Eiland morfologies redelik terugspringend sal wees ten opsigte van matige klimaatsverandering, al mag dit uitgekompeteer word deur die epifitiese gras, Agrostis magellanica by lae hoogtes en aan die oostekant van die eiland. Hierdie resultate dui ook dat verwarming van Marion Eiland se klimaat ’n vervroeging van fenologiese prosesse mag hê, veral by lae hoogtes en aan die oostekant van die eiland. Dus word dit verwag dat Azorella selago by lae hoogtes en aan die oostekant van Marion Eiland om meer simptome van klimaatsverandering (e.g. verwarming) te dui. Dit word ook voorspel dat Azorella selago opwaarts teen die hoogte gradiënt sal beweeg in reaksie tot verwarming.
