Abstract:
AbstractThis article begins by examining the nature of being human and the nature of suffering within the writings of Belgian Catholic theologian, Edward Schillebeeckx. Particular focus is given to Schillebeeckx’s understanding of the humanum—the essence of the human being which challenges another human being to respond with respect. Schillebeeckx’s understandings of the humanum are then set alongside an event in nineteenth century Aotearoa New Zealand in which Maori were forcibly removed by governmental authorities from their land at Parihaka. I propose that Schillebeeckx’s theological understandings of the humanum are valuable in engaging with and interpreting this historical event. Ultimately, I argue that Schillebeeckx’s interpretations of suffering and of being human offer fruitful insights for public theology.

Abstract:
This three-section article reappraises both Edward Schillebeeckx’s continuing significance and the relationship between ecclesiology and political theology. Having identified two differing sets of concerns within political theology, the first section argues that the claim that the church is the true form of political theology needs to be disciplined by a Schillebeeckx-like critical ecclesiology if it is to avoid ecclesiological idealism. The second section argues that such transformative ecclesiology is itself an act of intra-ecclesial political theology; and the third that it needs to be pursued with greater political astuteness than Schillebeeckx manifested in his theology of ministry.

Abstract:
Throughout six decades as a theologian, Edward Schillebeeckx has attempted to interpret Christian faith in a credible way in the context of contemporary culture. After reviewing Schillebeeckx's early groundbreaking contributions to sacramental theology, this article highlights his turn to history in the mid-1960s, the hermeneutical and critical shifts in his theological method, his proposals for rethinking a theology of ministry, and the impact of his monumental christological trilogy. Pervading the shifts in Schillebeeckx's theology is the sacramental conviction that the mystery of God can be encountered in creation and human history, even in a secularized and suffering world.

Abstract:
Edward Schillebeeckx’s theology of creation can serve as a foundation for authentic Christian self-understanding in relation to the ecological crisis. Schillebeeckx provides a Thomistic view of humanity and creation as both autonomous and “given” from God. Schillebeeckx’s anthropocentric “creation faith” and nuanced view of secularization provide a way of preserving the uniqueness of humanity without devaluing nature. Structural parallels with Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’ are developed in order to provide a fundamental-theological foundation for determining the proper role of human beings in relation to creation.

Abstract:
Confronted with the inescapable fact of plurality of religions, Christians are called out as well to reformulate their self understanding contextually. This challenge has been thought up by Edward Schillebeeckx as a task to rediscover Christian self understanding which is more open, undiscriminating to other religions, but in the same breath remains authentic to its colour and identity. On the one hand we might see some similarities of Schillebeeckx’s position with the pluralist theologians, given that revelation is viewed as both highlighting the limitless character of God as its subject and admitting human being’s limited horizon to receive it. On the other hand Schillebeeckx never claimed to have been a follower of pluralistic theory. His criticism of Paul Knitter shows a tendency that the former seems to be closer to those adopting inclusivistic theory. This proclivity is related with his christology that gives a unique place to Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the only saviour. Such position need not be discriminative to other religions in so far as the uniqueness of Jesus Christ is situated concretely in relation to the universal character of his salvation and providing that the grace characteristic of faith is not neglected.

[The theological hermeneutics of Edward Schillebeeckx facilitated a reflection on Christology tied to the notion of “experience.” This allowed Schillebeeckx to interpret the experience of salvation in Christ from one cultural milieu to the next. However, the overall experiment in Christology failed to acknowledge the limitations, especially for today, imposed by his reliance on frameworks of interpretation that too narrowly limit experiences of salvation within the legitimation structures of biblical and ecclesiastical theological structures.]

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis, Towards ajifth gospel via Schillebeeclx and Solle, is a search for God and God's gospel. It is a quest in which I combine Edward Schillebeeckx's belief that Christian life is a fifth gospel and Dorothee Solle's praxis-orientated theology into a contrapuntal theological conversation. I argue that through each theologian's vision of Christian life a theological and hermeneutical framework is established within which men and women of faith can interpret change and prepare the world and church for God's transforming newness. The scope of this thesis identifies a life-giving Christianity by investigating common theological themes in the work of Schillebeeckx and Solle. On the basis of the insights of both theologians I argue that all believers are called to critically reinterpret belief in the God of Jesus, that human experience is the horizon for reflection and interpretation. That mystics and prophets communicate God's saving love within an ethic of responsibility for this world, and that when Christian communities engage in

Abstract:
This chapter argues that Edward Schillebeeckx and Louis-Marie Chauvet formulate their theologies of sacraments to intentionally counter the negative influences of Neo-Scholasticism, which created too much separation between the natural and supernatural, between theology and life. Schillebeeckx, building on his interpretation of Thomas Aquinas, emphasized that sacraments are instances of personal encounter grounded in the saving work of God in the incarnation and therefore proper to a distinctly human world. Throughout his work on the topic, Schillebeeckx reorients sacramental theology in order to take the human world of history and subjectivity seriously. Chauvet describes this theology as “objectivist.” It was a theology concerned with the objective effects of sacraments in terms of the production of grace in the individual recipient. He proposes a sacramental theology grounded in contemporary explorations into the nature of language and culture. Schillebeeckx and Chauvet are two of the most innovative, and controversial, voices in Catholic sacramental theology in the past fifty years. They share a common concern that contemporary sacramental theologies take the concrete historicity of human subjects seriously rather than rely on abstract philosophical categories.
