Full textIn the current scenario, where societies are changing rapidly in the cultural, economic, political and social context, the issue of Active Citizenship Education has become more and more crucial in defining the objectives of education systems all over Europe, starting with the proclamation in 2005 of the European Year of Citizenship through Education and as set out in the Strategic Framework for European Cooperation in Education and Training (ET2020). This urgency was the cornerstone of the construction of the Erasmus+ STEP research project, Citizenship education and teacher training: an alliance between school and territory, in which I carried out part of my doctoral research. Within the STEP project, work has been carried out on the themes of living together, heritage education and sustainable development with the aim of promoting and strengthening dialogue and integration between the various disciplines that can affect the development of active citizenship skills, through the direct involvement of children and teachers in genuinely relevant experiences. In defining the theoretical framework of the case studies, it was essential to start a reflection on the different existing models of Citizenship Education and to identify the required conditions to ensure that the school context is consistent with the values of a democratic society. The first objective of the case study was to investigate whether and how an History Education that involves them in research and discussion in the classroom can contribute to the development of citizenship skills in primary school children, seeing them as active builders of their own knowledge, through the exploration of the cultural and social territory where they live. Specific attention was paid to the theme of the development of critical thinking, which the literature indicates as underestimated and to monitor it, conversations with children were analyzed during the whole development of the project. The second question that guided the research was whether and how a path of Teacher Professional Development Research, built between school and territory, could foster the construction of a community of practice and promote in the teachers involved new pedagogical-didactic knowledge, consciously oriented to the development of citizenship skills in children. In this perspective, within the case study, a continuous exchange between researchers and teachers was established with the aim of giving space to teachers to share doubts and difficulties faced during the course. The second focus of the research is on teacher training and the identification of which training methods can produce an effective reflection on the meaning of their professional behavior and a consequent improvement in their didactic designs to orient them to the promotion of citizenship skills in children. Within the case study the model of Teacher Professional Development Research was particularly investigated, starting from the assumption that the objective of the training must be the development of a reflective teacher who is aware of his own didactic action and of the importance of the process of decoding his own representations. The second part of the research is dedicated to the representations of future teachers on the meaning of teaching History and on possible connections with Active Citizenship Education. The willingness to conduct an exploratory study, through the submission of questionnaires to students of the degree of Primary Education Science of on this topic was born from the observation, during the analysis of the data collected in the case study, of the crucial role played by teacher training together with the fundamental contribution that the decoding of their representations can provide to the development of reflective practitioners.

Full textHoliday colonies originated in Switzerland in the second half of the nineteenth century and quickly spread to most of the European countries: born in the context of the recent hygienic and prophylactic sensibility, mainly oriented towards the fight against tuberculosis, these initiatives remained characterized until after the Second World War by a prevalent medical approach. The colonies, however, are also the product of a pedagogical reflection on the open-air dimension and on trip as an educational opportunity: outdoor moments are in fact always present in the history of these initiatives, not only in the collective bath in the sea or in the heliotherapy sessions, but also in the hikes in a nature seen as a world to explore and a source of learning. In Italy, the colonies remind us above all of the experiences of the fascist period, marked by a military and homologating imprint, by the rites of the flag raising and collective gymnastics in rigidly geometric formations; these are contexts in which the individuality and the initiative of the child are ignored and annulled in an anonymous dimension. After the Second World War, although most of the Italian colonies still had characteristics inspired by the sanitary model, very innovative projects appeared, which also served as an important place for training and experimentation in the field for school teachers, bringing a wind of innovation to this institution. This research is focused on the experiences of the Fiat and Ceméa holiday camps in the period 1968-1990, years in which the function of the camps is called into question, within the framework of a critical reflection on the relationship between the school and extracurricular dimensions. While the Fiat colonies in the second half of the 1970s were still rigidly characterized by an authoritarian imprint, the colonies run by Ceméa - movement that comes from France in the early 1950s and is inspired by the concepts and practices of Progressive education - are contexts that propose themselves as places of openness to the new, in which educators, free from the constraints of the educational institution, try to follow pedagogical directions that are still unexplored in the Italian panorama. The aim of the work is to describe the two specific experiences, reflecting on the pedagogies, both declared and implicit, evoked by the practices and on the reasons for the permanence of the past legacy alongside the elements of change. The study refers to the conception of history elaborated by the Annales school, which takes into consideration the entire range of human activities and elaborates an idea of history as a choral construction: it is an element, the latter, which also characterizes the colonies, which, with a few exceptions, do not have prominent figures but are the product of the work of a multitude of educators, often teachers, engaged in summer in holiday centers. The central resource of this research, together with the study of archives and house organs, is the use of interviews as oral historical sources, both to compensate for the relative scarcity of documents, and to build a story with several voices "from below", by listening to those who were guests as children in the colonies or have worked there as educators. As far as Fiat is concerned, the research also reconstructs the attempts at innovation, born within a previously very rigid organization, linked to the history of a company that in some periods almost replaced the welfare function of the State; as far as the Cemea experience is concerned, the study highlights a more free approach, oriented towards the child as protagonist of the activities and subject to continuous reworking and critical reflection by the staff involved.

Full textThe deep changes in today society point out new educational phenomena. Informal learning takes place spontaneously in people biography and living environment. Many studies show that informal education, more than formal one, can deeply and durably affect attitudes and lifestyles, can educate large masses of people, especially the most difficult to reach, to undertake to build a sustainable planetary community. This study investigates the Gruppi di Acquisto Solidale as informal educational experiences important for promoting a sustainable future. It examines and discuss the concepts of sustainability, the future time orientation and the informal educational dynamics in some Italian GAS. The first part of the work focuses on the complexity and fuzzyness of the concept of sustainability and some key dimensions of sustainable education. The conceptual categories identified have been used in field work to collect, analyze and interpret the empirical material. The second part presents the criteria, methodology, tools, activities (questionnaires, semi-structured individual interviews, participant observation, document analysis) undertaken during the field work. The third part presents the field work conducted on a sample of 148 subjects from four different GAS. The first and the second chapter expose the structure of the sample, the characteristics and mode of administration, the processing, analysis and discussion of the results of two questionnaires used in the field work: the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) and the open questionnaire on the concepts of sustainability (specifically worked out for this research). The third presents the core of the field study. By means of document analysis, participant observation and semi-structured interviews carried out with some key informants the concepts of sustainability, the time orientation to future and the educational dynamics in the four social contexts under study are identified and analyzed. In the final chapter we discuss some critical aspects that came out from the fieldwork, and we assume some clues for further research in the future.

Full textTaking part in an adequate level of physical activity represents a very important behaviour for the maintaining and the improvement of people's health. For this reason, among others, physical education is present in schools curricula worldwide, with the aim to help young people to value the importance of an active lifestyle. Nevertheless, in the transition from high school to university, a decrease in physical activity has been often been observed. Moreover, there are young people that are physically inactive during high school, and these are more at risk for a sedentary behaviour during the university years. It can be useful, for the end of improving the health and the wellbeing of university students, to implement interventions for the promotion of physical activity. The present dissertation describes the planning and the evaluation of an educational program to promote the adoption and the maintaining of a physically active lifestyle among university students. The aim is to provide a project for the creation of a service for the promotion of physical activity offered by the university to the students. The dissertation is composed by three main parts, related one each other, but that also represent partly independents researches: 1) A systematic review of the literature regarding controlled trials of interventions aimed at promoting physical activity among university students. In this part of the dissertation, the literature will be critically analysed, to search for strategies that have proved to be effective in promoting physical activity among university students. 2) An explorative survey among the students of the University of Padua. The survey has been carried out to investigate the phenomenon of physical inactivity among the students of the University of Padua, and to analyse the main perceived barriers to physical activity. 3) The planning and e valuation, by means of a pilot study, of a personalised educational intervention for the promotion of physical activity among university students. The planning of the intervention is preceded by the exposition of the anthropological and the pedagogical theoretical frameworks adopted.
