Abstract:
In digital era using the media resources and digital technology is not only necessary, but also vital. That is why it is recognized by many countries as one of the priorities of education reform. Today in educational process, teachers are using digital technologies and media resources to conduct lesson. In a result, the traditions of teaching and learning are changing and evolving. This article discusses the pedagogical opportunities of using digital technologies and media resources in education and the issues of their effective use in learning and teaching process. In this study examined the effectiveness and opportunities of teaching and learning through media resources. In addition, the issues of effective integration of digital technologies and media resources into the independent learning process of students were studied. The results showed that media resources increase students' motivation and interest in subjects and ensure learning efficiency. This is because the effectiveness of the learning process is directly related to the interest and motivation of learners to learn. Considering that media is interesting and attractive for everyone, the use of media in an educational process based on educational goals can be one of the best solutions to increase the motivation of students to learn. Due to media resources in the educational process, a new innovative method of teaching and learning practice was created, which will achieve the effectiveness of education by the fact that students learn at an individual pace, interact with the teacher when they need it, actively and willingly participate in the educational process.

Abstract:
Instructional media serve multiple functions in a school setting. They can disseminate knowledge and skills while also informing and stimulating discussion. They not only convey information and support learning but also foster communication between teachers and pupils and between classmates and groups. However, despite the significant role of teaching media other than textbooks in the classroom, educational and media historians have largely ignored them. This is all the more remarkable because the current media revolution has made the media themselves particularly topical. “Contact with and access to media,” states Jelko Peters “presents a significant and fundamental problem of our time, which is closely linked with values such as freedom of communication and individual freedoms, pluralism, access to education as well as involvement in culture and participation in politics.”

Abstract:
AbstractBackground:Although educational media have expanded in variety, information on physicians' preferences for types of educational media remains limited.Method:An assessment form was distributed to 14 medical societies evaluating their members' medical education media preferences and society antimicrobial-resistance educational offerings. Results:These 14 medical societies represent 349,685 physicians. All supported educational offerings, most frequently as professional meetings, followed by audiotapes, computer programs, Internet sites, or print-based self-study materials. Only 5 (36%) societies had measured how many members used their educational offerings. Eight (57%) societies had made antimicrobial resistance an educational priority for their medical societies. Antimicrobial treatment was the most commonly offered educational topic on antimicrobial resistance. Conclusions:These 14 medical societies help to educate over one half the practicing US physicians. However, less than one half of the societies knew how many of their members used the educational materials they offered, or how their members would prefer to obtain medical education. Understanding how physicians want to obtain medical information potentially could improve the delivery of medical knowledge to physicians.

Abstract:
Adolescent media use has been considered an important factor in shaping educational outcomes. In order to help adolescents succeed academically, it is important to understand how they utilize their time. The purpose of this study is to examine the culturally cultivated habits of adolescents in relation to academic outcomes. I argue that the relationship between media use and academics can be better understood when considering how adolescents develop their cultural habits. Using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital to frame my analysis, I utilize secondary data from the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS) for analysis. Overall, media use was associated with test scores, though the associations were not very strong. Visual media was negatively associated with test scores while leisurely reading was positively associated. Socioeconomic status, or SES, was shown to be the strongest predictor of math and reading scores; however, in my OLS models, the strength of SES declined when media use, student activities, and attitudes were accounted for. Moreover, the negative impact of consuming visual media is greater for higher SES students. Conversely, the positive impact of leisurely reading is larger for higher SES students. In conclusion, media is a cultural behavior and cultivated habits can affect educational outcomes.

Abstract:
The media are experiencing a digital revolution. Substantial research has been conducted on digital technologies as they change television, print, and commercial radio. However, very little is known about the current digital adaptation in college radio. From increased online consumption, to podcasts and social media, college radio is also embracing digital technologies. Educational engagement is important in college radio. Alternative and academic structures are being significantly influenced today through digital transformation. The college radio system has faced a number of funding and administrative tensions between stations and their universities. As these tensions continue to affect the growth and development of college radio, they should be studied. This study investigates the use of digital technologies in two college radio station case studies. The Kotter Eight Steps of Organizational Change Model is used to analyze the change process. This model is used to analyze an urgency to create change, the role of group collaboration, and how organizational visions are established, communicated, and used to create and anchor change. Issues of leadership, decision-making, and personal and group agency are also examined as part of each station’s theoretical implications. Through qualitative in-depth interviews and college radio station in-person and social media observations, this dissertation seeks to answer the question of how administration, staff, and management have incorporated digital media into college radio. This research also serves as a platform for a current look into how college radio is changing and can guide future research about station digital use and organizational change.

We present Sensei, the first system designed to understand social interaction and learning in an early-childhood classroom using a distributed sensor network. Our unobtrusive sensors measure proximity between each node in a dynamic range-based mesh network. The sensors can be worn in the shoes, attached to selected landmarks in the classroom, and placed on lessons. This data, accessible to teachers in a web dashboard, enables teachers to derive deeper insights from their classrooms. Further, the anonymized data can be used in large-scale research in early childhood. Sensei is currently deployed in three Montessori schools and we have evaluated the effectiveness of the system with teachers. Our user evaluations have shown that Sensei helps discover insights that would have otherwise been lost.

Aghaee, Naghmeh. "Social Media Use in Academia : Campus Students Perceptions of How Using Social Media Supports Educational Learning." Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Informatics and Media, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-130895.

Abstract:

Traditional education system on campus has been using as a legacy over decades to support educational learning. The major change over time has been made by the use of technology supporting students in the academic community. As the majority of students in higher education today belong to the digital-age-student generation, they frequently use online technology to interact with instructors, other learners, and to access online materials. In this study, the result is primarily presented from campus students’ perceptions, to gain a deeper understanding of how social media is being used to support educational and collaborative/cooperative learning. Although, almost all the respondents are frequent social media users, only a quarter of them use such media regularly for academic purposes. Through use of social media in academia, students have encountered with benefits─ as convenience, possibility of interaction anywhere/anytime, time-saving, low price and many others─ in addition to facing to limitations─ such as less effective or spontaneous contact, connection problems, lack of platform compatibility, less creative and innovative thinking, and other issues─ which have been discussed in this study.

This thesis adopted a qualitative research and the characterization of knowledge that is used is exploratory research method with the use of interview as a tool for empirical data collection. Twenty interviews have been conducted with Uppsala University higher education students within random subject disciplines. Among many different social media, the most frequent ones used by majority of students are e-mail, a common asynchronous media to interact with instructors and other learners; and Instant Messaging (IM), a synchronous communication way to interact with co-workers, classmates, or group-mates. Furthermore, learners use social media to coordinate their collaborative/cooperative work, share documents and ask questions. Facebook, Wikipedia, YouTube and other popular social media are also sometimes used for educational purposes.

The findings indicate that social media seems particularly beneficial for supporting educational learning; though there are some negative aspect and limitations. Learners look at using the technology and social media as a complement to support their studies and collaboration/cooperation. However, not many of them consider using such media as a substitute for face-to-face interactions and the traditional campus education. By drawing on this thesis and the previous studies, proposition on how use of social media supports educational learning in the future has been emerged.

Roth, Michael Q. "Superintendent use of Twitter| Learning, leading and leveraging through social media." Thesis, University of Pennsylvania, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10241847.

Full text
Abstract:

Technological advancements in society demand that students learn in contexts that take advantage of the vast availability of information, tools, and connectivity. Although research has focused on the development of Personal Learning Networks (PLNs) to inform and support teachers and principals within these evolving environments (Barkley, 2012; Carpenter & Krutka, 2014; Sinanis, 2015; Visser, Evering & Barrett, 2004), there is a lack of formal learning opportunities for leadership to support this transformation. Further, limited empirical research exists to substantiate claims that school district leaders who use social media for PLN purposes learn about, share, and enact leadership to support organizational transformation.

To help fill this gap in the knowledge base, this study employed a four-stage mixed-method research study to investigate United States public school superintendents use of Twitter for learning, leading, and leveraging improvement. Stage one established the population of United States superintendents with Twitter accounts. Stage two drew a random sample from the population to analyze representative Twitter patterns. Stage three focused on coding randomly sampled tweets of 100 superintendents for content aligned to the conceptual framework of learning, leading and leveraging through Twitter. Coding results framed stage four, which presented case studies of a purposeful sample of superintendents to identify motivations, purposes and influence on leadership enactment through Twitter use.

The study results showed that approximately 17% of U.S. superintendents have Twitter accounts. The Twitter-using superintendents reflect the gender breakdown of American superintendents, but Midwestern superintendents are overrepresented. Superintendents use Twitter predominantly for professional reasons with tweet content demonstrating a higher inclination toward leveraging influence than learning or leading. Superintendents purposefully use Twitter in ways they believe enhances their leadership by providing transparency to their work and district accomplishments. Through connections with others, superintendents use Twitter to inspire and communicate a vision for purposeful change; advocate for funding and policy; and model effective technology use through PLNs to enhance learning and collegial relationships. Additionally, Twitter enhanced off-line interactions and provided connection with students, offering professional wisdom about their experiences within school systems. The study provides insights of how social media contributes to digital leadership within school districts.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a series of design-led case studies concerned with the use of digital technology and the practice of interaction design for children within the context of UK special educational needs classrooms. It explores the use and development of accessible digital systems to support groups of students who have a range of special educational needs. Working with groups of mixed ability students has found to be the most typical situation for teaching in the participant schools and is a rich but underexplored area of concern for interaction design research. This thesis presents detailed accounts and grounded analysis of four embedded, design-led, case studies in two UK special needs schools. It makes three main contributions to the community of researchers, designers and educational practitioners who are concerned with the use of digital technology with children and more specifically working within the field of interaction design for children with special educational needs. These contributions are: A set of design guidelines developed through an analysis of the detailed and thorough accounts of four embedded design-led research projects in two special needs school in the UK. A discussion of the development of the research approach taken in this thesis. A set of design personas of teaching staff interaction designers are likely to encounter when working in a UK special needs school.

Abstract:
The number of risks that young people may face when using the Internet and other information channels is increasing every year. Disinformation, data fraud, information bubble as an effect of social media algorithms, and negative impact on mental health are some reasons why media literacy education has become particularly relevant in recent years. Also, in Latvia, starting from the 2020/2021 school year, a new standard of education has been introduced. The article aims to provide insight into two issues interrelated with young people’s media literacy – its research in Latvia and its possibilities to improve how media literacy is included in the formal education system. The study consists of the analysis of the documents – the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers, which determine the educational standards in the stages of basic and secondary education, as well as the analysis of media literacy studies conducted among young people in Latvia and published over the last five years. Studies on media literacy among young people in Latvia have some gaps which determine that currently, it is more difficult to predict young people’s exact and current needs in terms of media literacy. Although media literacy is represented in the newest educational standard for basic and secondary education, the main concern is the actual implementation of this standard in work with students, as there is still a lack of official supporting methodological materials and regular and systematic teacher education (including life-long education) in media literacy in Latvia. An article could be helpful for education policy and media policy planners, practitioners, researchers, and organizations/institutions working in the media literacy field.

Abstract:
How do we as researchers and educators discern how past institutions of higher education responded to pandemics and other social stresses, and what practices we can adopt from them? Combining Jussi Parikka’s ideas of media archeology with the radical post-colonialism of Nonwestern Educational Traditions by Timothy Reagan, this research explores specific artifacts of western and nonwestern systems of education innovation at specific periods in history, how these institutions responded to crises and pandemics, and what this suggests to our contemporary post-literate networked system of higher education. The emerging field of Media Archeology suggests a literature review mash-up and remix to find under-represented historical ideas around pedagogy and higher education. The impacts of these education innovations are seen through the artifacts such as ‘open plan’ school architecture, educational broadcasting, and proto-internet distance learning classes. Each of these dyads of a western tradition of higher education contrasted with a non-western or resistance tradition of higher education has left artifacts and practices that have been able to escape intentional destruction or cultural appropriation into current western hegemonies. By standing outside the constraints and politics of corporate narratives, these artifacts can point the way toward reviving educational systems based on techniques and technologies that can address the systematic problems with higher education. This study of media, sociology, education, and history seeks to suggest workable practices for a post-COVID world, that resists hegemonic practices and corporatization of education and addresses new challenges in the future.

Abstract:
Nowadays, social media, ICT, mobile technologies and applications are increasingly used as tools for communication, interaction, building up social skills and unique learning environments. One of the latest trends observed in education is an attempt to streamline the learning process by applying educational digital games. Despite numerous research data, that confirms the positive effects of digital games, their integration into formal educational contexts is still relatively low. The purpose of this article is to analyze, discuss and conclude what is necessary to start using games as an instructional tool in formal education. In order to achieve this aim, a complex of qualitative research methods, including semi-structured expert interviews was applied. As the result, the potential of educational digital games to give a unique and safe learning environment with a wide spectrum of build-in assistive features, be efficient in specific training contexts, help memorize studied material and incorporate different learning styles, as well as to be individually adaptable, was determined. At the same time, the need for complex approach affecting the administration, IT departments, educators, students, parents, a strong skill set and a wide spectrum of different roles and tasks a teacher carries out in a digital game-based learning class were outlined. In conclusion and as a vector for further research, the organization of Education Design Laboratory as an integral part of a contemporary educational institution was proposed.

Abstract:
The state of musculoskeletal system incidence of pupils of secondary schools remains a pressing problem in all regions of Ukraine, in spite of significant achievements in this direction. The determination of the readiness of teachers and senior students of pedagogical college for implementation of health-keeping technologies, which are aimed at creating a physiological posture of schoolchildren, to the educational process was conducted by our questioning method. 95% of teachers and 77.6% of students (according to polls) need methodological assistance for effective use of health-keeping technologies. We consider the main task of high school to be an optimization of the informational flow regarding health-keeping during the educational process and adaptation of the ways of presenting information to the perception of modern youth. The self-education has a great value for getting mastery, so it is necessary that a student or a teacher could have a wide access to both literature and electronic media. The Internet conferences, Internet sites, electronic textbooks, computer programs will be useful.

Burnett, Cathy. Scoping the field of literacy research: how might a range of research be valuable to primary teachers? Sheffield Hallam University, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.7190/shu-working-papers/2201.

Full text
Abstract:
Literacy research has an important role to play in helping to shape educational policy and practice. The field of literacy research however is difficult to navigate as literacy has been understood and researched in many different ways. It encompasses work from psychology, sociology, philosophy and neuroscience, literary theory, media and literacy studies, and methodologies include a range of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches. In mapping this complex field, I draw on a systematic ‘scoping survey’ of a sample of peerreviewed articles featuring literacy research relevant to literacy education for children aged 5-11. Studies were deemed relevant if they: addressed literacy pedagogies and interventions; and/or provided pertinent insights (e.g. into children’s experiences of literacy); and/or offered implications for the range and scope of literacy education. The results of this survey are important in two ways. Firstly they help to articulate the range of literacy research and the varied ways that such research might speak to literacy education. Secondly they challenge easy distinctions between paradigms in literacy research. Recognising this complexity and heterogeneity matters given the history of relationships between literacy policy and practice in countries such as England, where polarised debate has often erased the subtle differences of perspective and confluence of interest that this survey illuminates. Based on the results of this survey I argue that an inclusive approach to literacy research is needed in educational contexts. Otherwise alternative and/or complementary ways of supporting children’s literacy learning may be missed, as will important possibilities for literacy education and children’s current and future lives.
