Al-Hosni, Mohammed. "Ministry of Education of Oman : examinations marks and their relationships with educational indicators." Thesis, University of Salford, 2011. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26520/.

Abstract:
This study aims to provide a comprehensive view of the national educational system, and then to determine the values of some internationally-used indicators within Oman's schools, and their effects upon student performance in the 12 th grade examinations. From this analysis, the relationships between each variable and the optimal values for overall improvements in the total examination marks of students in the 12 th grade are derived. In pursuing this aim, the research conducts the first statistical analysis of ten educational indicators using data gathered by the Omani Ministry of Education. A logistic regression method is adopted to study repetition, drop-out, and promotion rates, using data pertaining to the school years 2006/2007-2007/2008. The analysis in this respect includes all governmental schools' students in grades 1-12. A linear mixed model is then used to explore data for the school years 2005/2006-2007/2008, relating to class size, school size, student/teacher ratio, teacher/class ratio, student age, student gender, and school gender mix. For these indicators, the analysis includes all the 12th grade students. The results reveal that girls are more likely to promote to the following grades than are boys, since they have low drop-out and repetition rates. This phenomenon causes the average student age of 12th grade girls to be less than that of boys. Grade 12 emerges as having the highest dropout rate, and grade 5 has the highest repetition rate. The distribution of the total marks of the 12 th grade students displays a long left tail, reflecting the fact that many students have low total marks. School size and class size are identified as having a negative effect upon the total examination mark. As the school size increases, so too do classes, but they are not allowed to become too large. The student age has the greatest significant effect on student performance among all the variables, student gender coming second in this ranking. Students who are young for their academic year are performing better than those who are older for the year, and girls perform better than boys. The research concludes that the basic education system in the Sultanate of Oman is in good health but that room for development and improvement does exist.

Abstract:
The selection process in tertiary education in Greece is characterized by a competitive and grade-oriented system that lays the foundations for the extensive use of private educational services. Family inclination towards private expenditure in education raises arguments for the conversion of public education into a private commodity. This thesis examines how a specific middle class group in an urban setting, the city of Larissa, deals with the system of private investments in upper secondary education. In particular, in the light of Bourdieusian concepts, this study attempts to analyse parental choice and strategies that families set in action for achieving educational success and the social advancement of their offspring, investigating also the role of education for middle class parents. 15 semi-structured interviews were carried out, delivering insightful narratives of parents who had experienced the national examination process. Interviews gave prominence to the unquestionable value of educational credentials for a successful educational and professional trajectory. For the accomplishment of quality education, parents deployed their cultural, economic, and social assets, which enabled them to be effective in the educational marketplace. Choice presented a complex task for parents, which presupposed an intensive devotion of time and energy. Accordingly, educational strategies started from the child’s early upbringing, being employed systematically at the upper secondary level of education. In fact, parental strategies appeared to be a “natural” process pertaining to responsible and caring parenthood. Parents took for granted that children should be satisfactorily equipped with valuable educational qualifications, which were seen as a necessity for a successful future, and an upward trajectory.

Abstract:

Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.

This thesis consists of essays about how to improve education markets through analyzing data generated by such markets. In chapter 1, I start with looking at how families decide which school to attend in a school choice system. Though such systems are designed assuming that families make well-informed choices upfront, I use data from NYC's high school choice system to show that families' choices change after the initial match as they learn about schools. I develop an empirical model of evolving demand for schools under learning, switching costs, and demand responses to prior assignments. The estimates suggest that there are even more changes in underlying demand, undermining the welfare performance of the initial match. To alleviate the cost of demand changes, I investigate dynamic mechanisms that best accommodate choice changes. These mechanisms improve on the existing discretionary reapplication process. In addition, the gains from the mechanisms dramatically change depending on the extent of demand-side inertia caused by switching costs. Thus, the gains from a centralized market depend not only on its design but also on demand-side frictions (such as demand changes and inertia). In chapter 2, I turn to education production after students start attending schools. In centralized school admissions systems, rationing at oversubscribed schools often involves lotteries on top of preferences of students and schools. This random assignment is extensively used by empirical researchers to identify the effect of getting in a school on outcomes such as test scores. I theoretically study whether a popular empirical research design extracts a random assignment as intended, providing a condition under which the research design successfully extracts a random assignment. Chapter 3 (with Atila Abdulkadiroglu, Josh Angrist and Parag Pathak) considers the complementary question of how best to use the lottery-generated variation for impact evaluation. We develop easily-implemented strategies that fully exploit the random assignment embedded. We apply these methods to find large achievement gains from charter school attendance in Denver. By analyzing test-score consequences, chapters 2 and 3 complement chapter l's analysis of welfare/happiness consequences of school attendance.

Abstract:
This dissertation discusses the relevance of the implementation of market mechanisms in the educational system. It shows that such mechanisms are unlikely to improve the matching between schools and students, since centralized mechanisms perform better. Then, it measures peers effects in French public junior high school, and shows that they quite large. In a third part, it looks to the compensation of teachers in France, and show that it is not based on merit or performance. Last, it analyses the impact of the openness to competition of the education, and shows that it is unlikely to produce improvement. Indeed, such openness would lead to an increased vertical differentiation across, giving them more market power. As a result, market mechanisms seem unable to improve students’ achievement

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to promote our understanding of the constraints and opportunities facing youth as they transit through schooling and to the labor market. The first chapter provides a literature review of the theoretical and empirical contributions to what we know about school-to-work transitions in developing countries and their specificities. The following chapter builds a computable general equilibrium model that is applied to the Malaysian labor market, in order to study the impact of skill-biased technological change and educational policy on labor market evolutions. Subsequent chapters examine household interactions arising from exogenous shocks, from the angle of children’s work and schooling. The findings from these chapters point to the presence of important spillover effects and heterogeneous absorption of shocks in the household. Impact evaluation of policy would therefore benefit from the systematic incorporation of such household-level externalities

Hallahan, Carolyn. "Inclusive further education in a market economy." Thesis, University of East London, 1998. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/681/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research evaluates the process of providing an inclusive education in a market culture. It investigates the experiences of eight young people with learning difficulties and disabilities who are students in a further education college. As it applies a focus to one specific case study example, in order to generalise from the literature and two other sample colleges, it represents ethnographic methodology. This is appropriate for the purposes of the study, which are to explore the implications of such processes, within an institutional and organisational structure which is subject to significant changes and restraints. The period under examination is one in which provision for this group of learners is influenced by a multiplicity of factors, not always evident on surface examination. Consequently, a focused ethnographic case study allows for a level of detailed analysis which can illuminate the effects of organisational changes upon individual development. The context in which the case study is set includes the plethora of Further Education Funding Council documentation during the 1990s, the critiques offered by academics of a narrowly competence-based and outcomes-related system, and the implications for students with special educational needs in further education colleges of the recent Dearing Report (1996) and soon to be published Tomlinson Report (1996). The case study provides an illustration of issues raised in recent literature and is set within the broader framework of recent initiatives. Through the use of detailed evaluation of a sample of students progressing through the assessment process in one college, recommendations and reflections contribute original evidence of the influence of legislation on current practice. Using the model of further education, tensions between an inclusive ideology and the demands of a market economy are evaluated and the case-study evidence has application beyond this sector to other areas of educational developments.

Mao, Jingyi. "Unverifiable education quality under labour market imperfection." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/42286.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of three essays that are concerned with unverifiable education quality under labour market imperfection. In all three essays, we consider a labour market where the monopsonist firm is looking to hire skilled labour. Education/training is the only channel to obtain the skill. The firm faces two-dimensional information asymmetry: the exogenous innate ability (type), and the endogenous choice of quality of education. The contract offered by the firm contains a requirement of presenting a degree as proof of skill acquisition and the wage payment, which consists of a fixed rate and a bonus. The first essay studies the labour market inefficiency caused by the imperfect competition and the presence of fake degrees. Fake degrees add no value to the worker’s productivity, and they are the extreme form of low-quality education. We show that with imperfect competition, the firm makes full use of the fixed wage to extract more rents. As a result, some types are incentivized to buy fake degrees. Once we switch to Bertrand-type competition, the equilibrium contract requires the firms to set a zero fixed rate and give all surplus to the worker. Fake degrees cease to exist in equilibrium, and the distortion in production that was present under monopsony disappears. The second essay adds in-house training as an instrument for the firm’s rent-seeking in addition to the fixed wage. In-house training enables the firm to be assured of the skill acquisition of the worker, but the usage is restricted to its cost. When its cost is weakly less than the cost of a genuine degree, the firm offers only in-house training to extract the full surplus. As the cost of in-house training increases and becomes higher than the cost of a genuine degree, the firm faces a trade-off between using the costly in-house training and using the fixed wage which means giving up a certain rent to higher types. We find that when the cost of in-house training is less than a certain value, the firm prefers to have higher types presenting a degree and relatively lower types trained in-house. When the cost exceeds the certain value, the firm offers contracts such that no type has the incentive to get in-house training. The third essay extends the first essay by generalizing the low-quality education. Instead of having fake degrees, we consider two levels of education quality, high and low. Low-quality education adds a positive value to productivity but less than the value of high-quality education. We focus on the setting where the social optimum suggests higher types to choose high-quality education and middle types to choose the low-quality education. We find that the labour market imperfection and the information asymmetry cause more types choose no education and fewer types choose the high-quality education compared to the social optimum.

Abstract:
Generally, immigrants face different challenges adapting to their new environment while starting a new life in the new environment. One of these problems is related to employment as they find it difficult finding jobs in their host countries. A number of them are often jobless or having jobs that do not correspond with their educational qualification. This is one of the factors that influence the earnings of immigrants in the Swedish labour market. This study focused on the factors influencing the underutilization of immigrant’s foreign educational credentials in the Swedish labour market. The study is based on human capital theory, cultural shock theory and discrimination theory. Through qualitative research design, rich detailed data about the phenomenon was collected from participants that participated in the study. Findings of the study revealed that the two major factors that influence the underutilization of immigrant’s foreign educational credential in the Swedish labour market are structural factors and individual factors (lack of social network with Swedish natives, inability to fluently communicate in Swedish, and loss of professional knowledge due to lack of practice).

Abstract:
This dissertation is a qualitative investigation into international postdoctoral employment in life science and engineering fields at universities in the United States and United Kingdom. Data were gathered through 49 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with international postdocs, faculty members who have supervised international postdocs from abroad at two universities in the US and two universities in the UK. The number of postdoctoral appointments has increased dramatically over the past decade, as has the share of these appointees who come from aboard. Yet few studies have investigated what is underlying this growing trend. By examining interactions between structure and agency at local, global and national levels, this study explored the roles that international postdocs play in academic production and the process by which they become mobile. Theory on globalization, higher education policy and models of academic production guide this study. Findings show that international postdocs are becoming scientific employees, rather than trainees, who are incorporated into capitalist modes of academic production as low-cost, high-yield scientific workers. Universities and individual faculty members seek international postdocs because of their contributions to research production; however, few postdocs have the opportunity to move into tenure-tracked faculty jobs. For international postdocs, becoming mobile is an individual process that is often constructed by individuals who negotiate home country academic policies in a global academic market. Mobility is a multi-stage process that begins with the potential to become mobile and is realized by actual mobility, which occurs through a transnational space produced by international journals that define global science.

Abstract:
Preschool attendance is widely recognized as a key ingredient for later socioeconomic success, mothers' labor market participation, and leveling the playing field for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. However, the empirical evidence for these claims is still relatively scarce, particularly in Europe. Using data from the 2011 Austrian European Union Statistics of Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC), we contribute to this literature by studying the effects of having attended preschool for the adult Austrian population. We find strong and positive effects of preschool attendance on later educational attainment, the probability of working full time, hourly wages, and the probability that the mother is in the labor market. Full time workers at the bottom and the top of the distribution benefit less than those in the middle. Women in particular benefit more in terms of years of schooling and the probability of working full time. Other disadvantaged groups (second generation migrants; people with less educated parents) also often benefit more in terms of education and work.

Jerrim, John. "The educational and labour market expectations of adolescents and young adults." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2011. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/192879/.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding why some suitably qualified young adults go on to enter higher education and others do not has been the subject of extensive research by a number of social scientists from a range of disciplines. Economists suggest that young adults’ willingness to invest in a tertiary qualification depends upon what they believe the costs and benefits of this investment will be. On the other hand, sociologists stress that an early expectation of completing university is a key driver of later participation in higher education. Children's subjective beliefs of the future (their “expectations”) are a consistent theme within these distinctively different approaches. Researchers from both disciplines might argue that children's low or mistaken expectations (of future income, financial returns, their ability to complete university) might lead them into making inappropriate educational choices. For instance, young adults who do not have a proper understanding of the graduate labour market may mistakenly invest (or not invest) in tertiary education. Alternatively some academically talented children may not enter university if they do not see it as realistic possibility, or that it is 'not for the likes of them'. I take an interdisciplinary approach within this thesis to tackle both of these issues. Specifically, I investigate whether young adults have realistic expectations about their future in the labour market and if disadvantaged children scoring high marks on a maths assessment at age 15 believe they can complete university.

Abstract:
This thesis studies over-education in the labor market in Spain and the UK. Resorting to the Labor Force Survey it is first researched whether over-education has significant influence on contract permanency in Spain. Controlling for endogeneity it is demonstrated that young over-educated workers in Spain are less likely to hold a permanent contract than matched young workers. In the next chapter we study the likelihood of obtaining training by over-educated workers in Spain. Results show that over-educated workers are less likely to participate in job-related training than their matched peers in the same jobs. Moreover over-educated workers would be more likely to obtain training if they got matched. Finally in the fourth chapter we investigate if job search methods affect differently the likelihood of being over-educated of graduates of soft vs. hard fields of study in the UK. The analysis reveals that hard fields graduates lose comparatively to soft fields by using any other method of job search than personal contact.

Abstract:
Governments around the world fund schools and are also involved in operating them. There is wide agreement that governments should be involved in provision of education, but the appropriate level and form of their involvement is a subject of debate. The key justifications for government involvement are externalities and credit market imperfections, and this thesis examines these inefficiencies within the context of India's education system. Chapter 2 assesses human capital externalities in India. It demonstrates that living in a locality with educated individuals has a strong beneficial effect on wages over and above the effect of one's own education. In line with theoretical predictions, the effect is strongest for small geographical areas. In contrast to a general equilibrium interpretation of the results, skilled labour also benefits from a better level of local education. Furthermore, human capital externalities are more pronounced in nonprimary industries. Chapter 3 analyses the effect of credit constraints on education. The principal findings are that credit constraints significantly reduce school attendance and increase wealth inequalities in educational outcomes. Temporary income shocks reduce the probability of attending school, but access to credit mitigates this effect. Finally, the results are not limited to short-term outcomes, but are also seen to be present in long-term outcomes. Chapter 4 studies how representation of teachers in India's state Upper Houses affects the provision of education. The main results are that teacher representation increases employment of teachers in represented schools and reduces employment in unrepresented schools, with a corresponding effect on educational outcomes. Rather than achieving the intended objectives of teacher representation, teachers seem to have used their political power to shift resources in their favour.

Abstract:
This dissertation is composed of four independent chapters. Each of the chapters focuses on one particular moment of individual trajectories of young French people at school and on the labor market. Through these trajectories, individual make schooling and employment decisions. This work aims at explaining these decisions and understanding their consequences on later outcomes. Although these chapters are independent, they all aim at explaining inequality at school and on the labor market for young French people and to charcterize the link between education and labor market outcomes. The thesis contributes to the research in economics given that it raise original questions on individual decisions and answers to these questions using a large scope of empirical methods and dataset

Perry, Laura Melissa. "A Case Study Market Analysis of Acceleration Mechanisms in Florida: Dual Enrollment Positioning." Thesis, NSUWorks, 2013. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/fse_etd/9.

Full text
Abstract:
This applied dissertation explored dual enrollment viability when compared to other acceleration mechanisms: (a) advanced placement, (b) advanced international certificate of education, (c) international baccalaureate, and (d) college-level examination program. This multicase, qualitative study explored the competitiveness of dual enrollment versus other acceleration mechanism using Porter’s model and the strengthsweaknessesopportunities- threats analysis as the theoretical frameworks. The study used one-on-one interviews to gather primary comparative information. Five groups were interviewed: (a) the vendors of the acceleration mechanisms, (b) state education officials, (c) district personnel, (d) high school representatives, and (e) higher education representatives. The acceleration mechanisms’ educational objectives, their positioning, and any acceleration mechanisms’ benefits to the various stakeholders were examined. Dual enrollment was compared to the other acceleration mechanisms to develop recommendations for improving the competitive positioning and viability of dual enrollment in Florida. The study found that acceleration-mechanism options were complex and dynamic programs that were highly influenced by government policies and funding. Educational entities viewed the value of acceleration mechanisms differently, especially dual enrollment. All groups agreed that acceleration mechanisms provided rigorous curriculum for high school students to prepare for college. However, educational entities first wanted to protect their own interests and funding. In terms of dual enrollment, financial considerations remained a substantial motivation for the program. The study showed that all acceleration mechanisms offered benefits to participating students. However, the multifaceted and ever-changing nature of acceleration mechanisms provided no clear advantages or benefits for dual enrollment versus other acceleration mechanisms. Several recommendations are made that addressed concerns about the longterm value of dual enrollment for Florida institutions and students.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation assesses the combined effects of cultural values and labor market frictions on individuals' educational investments and unemployment behaviors. The first chapter proposes an explanation to social reproduction. I use an overlapping generations model where parents transmit values more or less favorable to employment and the child chooses education and looks for a job. Transmission occurs through imperfect information about their offspring's scholastic ability. In privileged families, parents do not doubt about their offspring's success on the labor market, and transmit a strong pro-employment value. I find that this mechanism increases social immobility. The second chapter assesses how to compute optimal UI in a case where endogenous preferences are represented by an optimal choice of self-esteem at work which can either be complementary or substitutable to work income. While neglecting the state-specific and endogenous nature of self-esteem weights, a sufficient statistics approach may wrongly call for UI expansions. The third chapter analyzes the relationship between inherited work ethic and the decision to take up benefits in case of unemployment with a search model where parents transmit self-esteem at work to their offspring. An increase in non employment income or a decrease of the claiming cost increase the probability of taking benefits up in the case of unemployment, while a decrease in the searching cost decreases the unemployment rate and the take-up rates. This last result comes from an increase of employment self-esteem when the unemployment risk is lower, which itself leads to an increase in unemployment stigma

Since the past several years, Internet and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are at their zenith. Application of these technologies has reshaped most industries and has largely impacted the lives of people. Education is an essential part of an individual's welfare and a country's future. However, we find a slower than average speed, in the spread of Internet technologies in education. On the other hand, education in China is very backward. Millions of people who live in second-tier cities, small towns and rural areas do not have access to high-quality education. This phenomenon leads to Polarization of the Society and lowers social mobility. However, the situation of lesser development in education also indicates a market with great potential. The online education market is regarded as one of the most promising fields of the next decade. Moreover, people have witnessed many Chinese Online Education Technology startups emerged in the past several years. These education startups have different advantages and diverse strategies. This thesis will examine the current e-learning market, analyze the pros and cons of different models, choose the right model for a startup and recommend a roadmap to viable and profitable Chinese Educational ventures.

The aim of the thesis called Education and the Educational System in the Plzeň Region and its Connection with Labour Market is to answer the question whether the number of the graduates from the Plzeň region schools corresponds to the needs of the labour market. The first chapter clarifies basic notions in the area of education and labour market. The following part describes the educational system and the labour market in the Czech Republic. This part also includes the legislative framework and basic strategic and conceptual documents of the Czech educational system. The third chapter deals with characterizing of all the levels of the educational system in the Plzeň region, it further focuses on the labour market in the region which is dealt with in the last part of the thesis. The last part includes an analysis of the available job positions registered by the regional offices and also describes the situation of the graduates of different types of school in the labour market. The results of the thesis show that the number of the graduates of the higher professional schools and universities in the region corresponds to the needs of the labour market. However, the situation is more complicated on the level of the secondary education -- there are not enough graduates in some study fields, especially educated in technical fields; conversely, redundancy is the case in other study fields -- for example graduates of gastronomy vocational schools and graduates of economical schools. There is an apparent effort of the Plzeň region to solve the current situation so that the educational system would agree with the requirements of the labour market.

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis called Educational System in the Liberec Region and its Connection with Labour Market is to analyse the educational system and determine whether the structure of the educational system corresponds to the needs of the labour market. Due to the increased influence of high school graduates, it is focused on the research of high school graduates and their situation in the labour market. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter describes the basic concepts of education and the labour market. The second chapter deals with the educational system in the Czech Republic. There is also introduced legislation in education and basic conceptual documents. The next part deals with the labour market in the Czech Republic and related legislative framework. The fourth chapter focused on the Liberec Region and description of the educational system in this region, including the situation of graduates in the labour market. The last chapter describes the labour market in the Liberec Region and in conclusions is described the situation of graduates in the labour market in this region. The analysis proved that the structure of the educational system in the Liberec Region does not correspond with the labour market. In case of artistic fields of study is the continuity between the educational system and the labour market better, on the other hand in these areas the number of graduates is lower. In popular disciplines such as administration, economy or tourism is a surplus of graduates in Liberec Region.

The aim of the diploma thesis is to answer the question whether the number of graduates from high schools and universities corresponds to the needs of the labor market in Carlsbad region. To achieve this goal the basic notions of education and labor market are explained in the theoretical section. After that, the role of education in the labor market and regional development is described. All levels of the educational system and the labor market in the Czech Republic is characterized in the next chapter together with legislative framework and basic conceptual documents according to the Czech educational system. Next chapter contains characteristics of the educational system in Carlsbad region. The last section is devoted to the labor market, analysis of vacancies registered by labor offices and the situation of graduates on the labor market. The results of the thesis show that there is not enough technically oriented graduates from high schools. The regional leaders try to deal with this situation and encourage students to study technical fields. Offer of graduates from higher vocational schools meets the needs of the labor market. The situation with university education is more complicated. Firstly, there is a lack of technical fields and the second problem is leaving of university graduates from the region. Even in this case there is apparent attempt of regional representatives to solve this problem and adapt the educational system so it can better reflect the needs of the labor market.

Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the extent to which educational attainment, school quality and numeric competency influence individuals’ employment and earnings prospects in the South African labour market using data from the 2008 National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS). While NIDS is one of the first datasets to contain concurrent information on individual labour market outcomes, educational attainment levels, numeric proficiency and the quality of schooling received in South Africa, it is also characterised by limited and selective response patterns on its school quality and numeracy measures. To account for any estimation biases that arise from the selective observation of these variables or from endogenous selection into labour force participation and employment, the labour market returns to human capital are estimated using the Heckman Maximum Likelihood (ML) approach. The Heckman ML estimates are then compared to Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimates obtained using various sub-samples and model specifications in order to distinguish between the effects that model specification, estimation sample, and estimation procedure have on estimates of the labour market returns to human capital in South Africa. The findings from the multivariate analysis suggest that labour market returns to educational attainment in South Africa are largely negligible prior to tertiary levels of attainment and that racial differentials in school quality may explain a significant component of the observed racial differentials in South African labour market earnings. Neither numeracy nor school quality appears to influence labour market outcomes or the convex structure of the labour market returns to educational attainment in South Africa significantly once sociodemographic factors and other human capital endowment differentials have been taken into account. Though the regression results vary substantially across model specifications and estimation samples, they are largely unaffected by attempts to correct for instances of endogenous selection using the Heckman ML procedure. These findings suggest that the scope for overcoming data deficiencies by using standard parametric estimation techniques may be limited when the extent of those deficiencies are severe and that some form of sensitivity analysis is warranted whenever data imperfections threaten to undermine the robustness of one’s results.

Abstract:
The earnings gap between men and women has long been a problem of interest to sociologists. Using data provided by the General Social Survey, this thesis addresses this problem by utilizing a causal model that conceptualizes the labor market sector as intervening in the relationships between education and income, and between the absence or presence of children and income among women. The impact of age on these relationships is also considered. Women who have children and a lower educational level do not, it was found, make as much money and work more in the secondary sector than childless, better-educated women. The labor market sector was fund to be an important variable in terms of its impact on the relationships between educational level, the presence of children, and income. However, the labor market sector did not entirely mediate the relationship between the presence of children and income or educational level and income. Direct associations were found between the presence of children and income and educational level and income, but these relationships varied by sector and age. The presence of children did not effect the income of older women in the secondary sector, but did in the primary sector. Educational level did not effect income for either younger or older women in the secondary sector, but did in the primary. The relationship between educational level and income remained strong in the primary sector regardless of age group. An additional difference was found due to age. Younger women were found to have fewer children than older women. Previous research that has been conducted on women and the labor force was reviewed and critiqued and may be useful in more clearly explaining issues related to women's success in the job market.

Abstract:
This dissertation consists of three essays in applied microeconomics. The first essay investigates the effects of generic entry on post-patent price competition in the prescription drug market using NDC Health data on 18 oral solids that lost their patent sometime between February 1998 and 2002. I am able to characterize the impact of endogenous generic entry on branded and generic prices, conditional on payment type (i.e., cash, Medicaid, third party). Based on the findings in this paper, the overall, long-term impacts of the 1984 Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act (Waxman-Hatch Act) are yet to be determined. The second essay develops a theoretical model of earnings where human capital is the central explanatory variable. The analysis and estimation strategy stems from the Mincerian simple schooling model. Human capital investments (i.e., schooling) are incorporated into a model based on individual wealth maximization. We utilize the conventional economic models of supply and demand to derive an optimal level of schooling function. Using the NLSY79, we stratify our sample into one-year work experience intervals for 1985-1989 to identify the "overtaking" cohort (i.e., the years of work experience at which an individual's observed earnings approximately equal what they would have been based on schooling and ability alone). We employ the AFQT score as an ability proxy and consider its possible endogeneity for several estimation strategies. The third essay attempts to address the bias inherent in the use of potential, as opposed to actual, work experience measures in human capital models. While such a proxy is often deemed reasonable for males, problems still exist---specifically, unemployment spells manifesting themselves as active job searches or withdrawal from the labor market. Presumably, such activities have different effects on one's work experience. Potential work experience measures also abstract away from employment status, over-time work, moonlighting, and multiple-job holding. We employ actual work experience data from the NLSY79 and the PSID and extend our findings to a data set in which actual measures of work experience are not available---specifically, the IPUMS, with the creation of predicted work experience measures.
