Abstract:
The examination of the growth of canoe transport in Buganda in the nineteenth century is an aspect of the kingdom's history that has received little serious consideration to date. This paper focuses on the ways in which the canoe fleet, especially from the 1840s, was systematically developed and utilized in the extension of Ganda power and influence in the Lake Victoria region. The need to protect and promote commerce was one of the driving forces behind Buganda's diplomatic, military and technological policies in the second half of the nineteenth century. This was consistent with objectives of the kingdom that had endured since around the middle of the sixteenth century, although the scale of these objectives had expanded along with the kingdom's horizons. Yet recognition of this basic continuity should not detract from our appreciation of the degree to which the Ganda innovated to meet the challenges of long-distance trade, as well as the challenges to their control of the external environment. The presence of Ganda at Tabora, on the southern shore of Lake Victoria, and even at Zanzibar itself is indicative of the alacrity with which Kabaka Suna (c. 1830–56) and Kabaka Mutesa (1856–84) seized their opportunities and attempted to secure conditions perceived to be favourable to the ‘national interest’ far beyond territorial borders. Yet Ganda also failed to realize the full military potential of their canoes. Despite their considerable efforts, the success of the naval endeavour was never without qualifications, and it is one of the primary aims of this paper to analyze these deficiencies.

Abstract:
This article records briefly the history of the Family Inclusion Network as an organisation that promotes family inclusive child protection practice. Since its inception in Queensland in 2006, Family Inclusion Network organisations have been formed elsewhere and now exist in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales. In 2010, developments at a national level saw the formation of the Family Inclusion Network Australia. Most organisations are incorporated and some have achieved charitable status. Each organisation endorses a common set of aims and objectives. There are, however, differences in terms of whether state or territory organisations accept government funding or not, are staffed by professionals or rely entirely on volunteer personnel, and have a capacity or otherwise to provide direct casework services to parents. Some state organisations focus on information and advice services, and legislative and policy reform efforts. All have telephone advice lines and a webpage presence. This article also focuses on a code of ethics for child protection practice and on the contribution parents can make to child protection services, and their rights to do so.

Abstract:
Waterwatch is a national community-based monitoring network that aims to involve community groups and individuals in the protection and management of waterways. Waterwatch Victoria has the dual objectives of catchment education and water quality monitoring. The educational outcomes are evident, with the Waterwatch programme facilitating over 9,000 students to monitor more than 2,000 sites in waterways in 2000. This paper aims to assess the scientific value of community-collected data, through examining differences between Waterwatch data and professionally collected data. The study looked at all aspects of volunteer data collection, including data confidence protocols, equipment, and data analysis. All professional data was collated by the Victorian Water Quality Monitoring Network (VWQMN). The parameters examined in this study were turbidity, electrical conductivity (EC), pH and total phosphorus. The level of agreement between community-collected data and professional data varied temporally and spatially. Waterwatch data for EC and pH appeared to be very similar to professionally collected data. Equipment used by Waterwatch volunteers for turbidity and total phosphorus appeared to be limited in accuracy to moderate ranges. Overall the VWQMN professionally collected data showed less variance, suggesting greater variability, potentially due to inaccuracies, in volunteer collected data.

Abstract:
Islam is a religion that respects and upholds human values. Trafficking in persons is a form of modern slavery that is not following the nature of humanity given by God. This paper examines how trafficking in persons is in the perspective of maqashid al-sharia which aims to place humans in their human dignity. This paper uses a literature review by utilizing primary sources, whether in the form of books, research results, or journal works that have relevance to the focus of the study. Human trafficking is an act that is not relevant to the objectives of Islamic law, namely to create a life based on equality, independence, respect for fellow human beings, and worthiness in life. Islam forbids the behavior of trafficking in persons because Islam respects humans. In the conception of Islam, there are five main things called al-daruriyat al-khamsah (five main things that must be maintained). Namely protection of religion (hifzh al-din), soul (hifzh al-nafs), reason (hifzh al-'aql), offspring (hifzh al-nasl), property (hifzh al-mal). These five main things which are referred to as maqashid al-sharia are a specialty in Islamic teachings so that anything that contradicts them is considered as behavior that is not in accordance with the aims and objectives of the revelation of Islamic teachings.

Abstract:
Objectives Policy makers in developed countries have long considered the education system an avenue for supporting mental health care for children. Whilst educators have identified many challenges to providing this support (e.g. non-core role, stigma, overcrowded curriculum), understanding clinicians’ views on the role of educators and schools and how clinicians and schools could work together to achieve good mental health outcomes are important questions. However, clinician voices in how schools and health should work together for children’s mental health care are frequently missing from the debate. We aimed to report clinicians’ views about how the education system could support student’s mental health and improve access to mental health care for children and adolescents. Methods 143 clinicians (approximately 35 each of child and adolescent psychiatrists, pediatricians, child psychologists and general practitioners (GPs)) from the states of Victoria and South Australia participated in semi-structured phone interviews between March 2018 and February 2019. Inductive content analysis was applied to address the broad study aims. Findings Key themes emerged: (1) The role of schools in supporting individual children; (2) School based programs to support children and families; and (3) Challenges of implementing these suggestions. Clinicians across all professional groups suggested the education system could play an important role in improving access to mental health services through harnessing existing staff or co-locating mental health clinicians. They also suggested schools could identify at risk children and implement coping and social skills programs. Conclusions Schools and educators could play a key role in prevention and early intervention of children’s mental health problems. However, before recommending exactly how to do this, key evidence gaps need to be addressed.

Ishak, Muhammad Shahrul Ifwat. "Considering Maalat as an Approach to Applying Maslahah in Reality." ICR Journal 9, no. 2 (April 15, 2018): 147–60. http://dx.doi.org/10.52282/icr.v9i2.118.

Abstract:
Maalat (consequences of an action) was suggested by al-Shatibi as a principle to engage with situations where the outcomes of Islamic rules are not in line with their objectives. While rules in Islam are revealed for the sake of maslahah (well-being), in some situations implementing them might not achieve this element, maybe even militating against it. Through maalat, al-Shatibi suggested providing exceptions in those situations, involving either the banning of a permitted action or the toleration of a prohibited action. However, without a proper understanding of this principle, its application could be misunderstood as a way to justify amending a rule in the name of maslahah. This might eventually endanger the integrity of the Islamic rules. In this regard, this paper aims to analyse al-Shatibi’s conception of maalat and identify the fundamentals behind this principle. The findings reveal that the principle of maalat must be applied under the disciplines of ijtihad (reasoning) and maqasid al-Shariah (objectives of Islamic law), and with reference to an accurate understanding of reality, thereby ensuring its application is in line with Islamic principles.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: With the increased development of distributed sites for medical education across Canada, it is imperative we ensure that the quality of education is comparable between the different campuses. Our objective was to assess medical student experience and comfort with common urologic clinical encounters and to determine whether any differences exist between the distributed education sites at the University of British Columbia (UBC).Methods: Questionnaires assessing urologic education were delivered simultaneously to all final-year UBC medical students attending campuses in Vancouver, Victoria and Prince George. Results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Overall, 55.8% of students felt their exposure to urology was adequate in the medical curriculum; learners in the Northern Program (Prince George) ranked their clinical and didactic experiences significantly higher. Areas requiring improvement include teaching of the male genitourinary exam, digital rectal exam and sexual history, in which learners rated teaching “good/outstanding” in only 18.2%, 47.7% and 43.2% of cases, respectively. Overall, students were most comfortable with the following clinical encounters: urinary tract infection, nephrolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, hematuria, incontinence and prostate cancer. Few differences in student experience or comfort were noted related to campus site, gender or urology clerkship exposure. Conclusion: A significant minority of learners perceived that theyhad inadequate exposure to urology in the undergraduate curriculum. Experience in urology was comparable across the distributed sites and was congruent with teaching objectives. Students were comfortable with the clinical scenarios deemed most important in the literature. Learners in the Northern Program were significantly more satisfied with their urologic teaching, which potentially highlights the advantages of learning in a smaller academic setting.

This study aims to determine the practice of distributing the Village Fund Direct Cash Assistance (BLT-DD) program during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Pewisoa Jaya Village, Tanggetada District, Kolaka Regency. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with data collection methods through interviews, observation and documentation. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of the BLT-DD program during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Pewisoa Jaya Village, Tanggetada District, Kolaka Regency, has not gone well, this can be seen from the determination of the names of Family Cards (KK) as BLT-DD recipients that are not correct. target. In this case, in Pewisoa Jaya Village, there was never any updating of the Integrated Social Welfare Data (DTKS) even though they visited people's homes to collect community data as potential recipients of BLT-DD. The achievement of the objectives of the program policy in Pewisoa Jaya Village has not run optimally, because there are still people who are in the capable category and have received other social assistance but whose names are registered again as BLT-DD recipients, while there are still many poor people who have never been touched by social assistance. so that the objectives of the BLT-DD program have not been fully targeted.

Abstract:
All children should be treated equally, feel significant and should not left out. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) focuses on supporting culturally, socioeconomically and racially diverse school district populations. Public education is a right for all well and disadvantaged children. Inclusive education treated learners fairly and with dignity regardless of their race, color, physical ability, learning styles and interests. It is a dynamic process where stereotypes, exclusion from education, inactivity, discrimination are terms that will not be tolerated anymore. Nevertheless, the activation of comprehensive education in Palestine remains limited due to the lack of skills of teachers to contain all students at all levels, and the lack of material resources, equipment and means, and therefore appropriate legislation and laws for the Palestinian context must be enacted to facilitate the integration of people with special needs into our schools. Therefore, this study aims to highlight the history of inclusive education, its objectives, the justifications for its application, inclusive education and private education, the role of teachers when applying them, and the challenges of their application in Palestine.‎ Key words: Inclusive education, challenges, Palestine.

Abstract:
The problem statement of this research is about Imam Yassine’s thought in his reading of Islamic past and present and Western intellectual trends, and about his long experience in the field of Da’wah, as Imam Yassine urged Muslims to be capable of handling the mission of the holy Quran. It becomes more complicated with Al-Tafsir al-Minhaji as an approach to interpret the holy Quran and ease it for Muslim youth understanding in Imam Yassine’s books about thought, education, Da’wah, mysticism and civilization. This research aims to explain how Al-Tafsir al-Minhaji concerns about the method of practicing Quranic interpretation in Da’wah for Muslim Ummah renaissance. The research also aims to highlight that achieving global peace is one of main Quranic objective that Muslim thinkers are paying a great attention to its role in dialogue between variant sectarianists and theologians. Researchers followed the descriptive and inductive methods to explore Yassine’s views about peace, civilization and argumentation. Some findings of this research: Imam Yassine confirms the necessity of coincidence between the Quranic objectives and political objectives; and calls for dialogue based on Quranic objectives and its component of wisdom and dynamic argumentation, which leads to peace. To understand the fluctuation of history in the light of Quranic exegesis, Imam Yassine scrutinized the Quranic objectives of peaceful coexistence and cultural exchange.

Abstract:
Abstract This article studies the photographic methods that the Poland-based Landkentnish (Yiddish for “knowing the land”) movement employed in the interwar period to promote Jewish culture and Poland as a home for the Jewish people. The movement wished to increase the exposure of Polish Jews to Poland’s diverse landscapes in order to strengthen their connection to the Polish land. It also aspired to create archives of local Jewish cultural heritage to attest to the long history of Polish Jewry and to the contributions that Jews had made to Polish society. After tracing the movement’s origins, the article explores the concentrated efforts that it made to provide its members with photographic knowledge and education. Analyzing the photographic sources and resources that the movement created, the exhibitions that it put on display, and its employment of snapshots, the article demonstrates how photography assisted the movement in realizing its key aims and objectives.

It means that the developed learning model can accommodate the needs of the 21st-century learning skills and the learning history objectives. Based on this research, the authors highlight that the elaboration of the learning model can provide a space for synchronizing learning history objectives with other educational concepts from various disciplines. Thus, further research and development in the history education landscape should provide more opportunities for elaborating the learning models to amend the role and impact of learning history in the 21st century</em><em>.</em>

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to review the current situation with history teaching in Turkey after the education reform introduced in 2004. Accordingly, this study mainly focuses on the structure and problems of history teaching in Turkey bothat primary and secondary levels after the education reform, following confrontational debates about the role of history teaching in the construction of citizenship, and in the context of international relations, which is related to collaborative projects undertaken with a number of countries to rewrite history textbooks in a peaceful way. Current research trends in this field are also mentioned briefly. Some researches show that in history teaching in Turkey the common issues that occur are related to text books, the intensity of knowledge/objectives relationships, insufficient weekly course hours and the unfamiliarity of teachers with both new history and constructivist approaches. New history textbooks and curricula continue to be a conflict area between their respective defenders who claim in turn that history teaching should either be a vehicle for constructing national identitity or that it should be a vehicle for constructing global, pluralist and democratic citizenship. On the other hand, mutual work with some Arabian countries to rewrite the common past in textbooks,is on Turkey's current agenda to enhance the international context of this perspective. Some researches also show that apart from debates about the nature of history's social aims and the problems of history teaching as already indicated, teachers seem ready to adopt the new history approach. In addition to this, every passing day there is a marked and rapid increase in research into history teaching and the variety of related research subjects are hopeful improvements.

Abstract:
In the Malaysian context, debates pertaining to the role of judges in making new laws according to their own discretion are still on-going. In principle, Malaysia’s judiciary system provides judges with a considerable amount of discretionary power when deciding on cases where no specific legislation has been enacted. Nonetheless, judicial discretion in Malaysia is restricted by mandatory sentences for a number of offences. In this context, many calls have been made by judges and scholars to scrutinize the judiciary system. They have raised the question of whether Malaysia needs to resort to English common law, despite having been independent for more than 50 years. Some have even proposed the development of a ‘Malaysian Common Law’ through the judges’ discretionary authority. In this context, this article examines the Islamic legal principle known as ta’zir. One of Islam’s pivotal criminal principles, ta’zir aims at several specific objectives (al-maqasid al-khass), such as the prevention of perpetrators from repeating offences. This research highlights several underpinning principles (dawabit) of ta’zir that, in light of the higher intents of the Shariah, could be used as guidelines for judges in the course of adjudicating cases. Drug trafficking offences are then selected as a specific example of how this could be done, thereby displaying the viability of this proposal in the realm of a hypothetical Malaysian common law system.

Abstract: When the Republican leaders acceded to power, one of their main objectives was a deep reform in education. The study aims to analyze the general principles of the administrative judiciary in the United Arab Emirates in comparison with Islamic law by examining the history of the administrative judiciary in Islamic law and Emirati legislation, identifying obstacles to the application and development of administrative judiciary in the United Arab Emirates, and evaluating the role of the administrative judiciary in monitoring the work of the official administration In the United Arab Emirates. The problem of the study is the modernity of the administrative judiciary and its limitation to annulment, compensation, and the disciplinary proceedings. The researcher uses the descriptive-analytical approach and the comparative approach to achieve the objectives of the study and to find solutions to the problem at hand. The study concludes with a set of results and recommendations, the most important of which is that Islam was the first religion to come up with the idea of establishing an office for adjudicating claims of injustice. The administrative judiciary is considered a real guarantee to control the decisions of the official administration and not to oppress individuals. Besides, the administrative judiciary in the UAE is newly established compared to the administrative judiciary in other countries.

Abstract:
The provision of paid leave and time-offs are practices in human resource administration that aims at reducing burnout, stress as well as family-work conflict. Thus, provision of leave allows an employee to recuperate from the daily pressure of work. However, in the education sector in Kenya, information concerning administration of leave policies to teachers is not clear. In some counties such as Homa Bay in Kenya, secondary school teachers are faced with problems such lesson overload, inadequate time-offs for sick and lactating teachers, and inadequate bereavement leaves. The number of teachers seeking for transfer has also increased over the years. The purpose of this study was to analyse the influence of adherence to leave policies by school administration on performance of teachers in public secondary schools in Homa Bay County. Specific objectives were to determine the level of teachers’ performance and to establish the influence of provision of leave on performance of teachers. The study employed descriptive survey design. Target population comprised a total of 257 principals and 2,231 teachers. Yamane’s formula was used to calculate 292 teachers and 22 Principals from whom data was collected using questionnaire and interview schedule respectively. The study found that adherence to leave policies (F = 66.488 ; P = 0.0) as a significant predictor of teachers’ performance abeit with a low contribution (21.8% or R2 =0.218) change in teacher performance. It is concluded that adherence to leave policies do not provide adequate satisfaction to elicit effort towards enhanced performance among secondary school teacher.

Abstract:
<b>Objectives: </b>The molecular biology revolution has emerged with the determination that bone tissue is an endocrine organ that regulates many physiological processes, and osteocalcin (OCN), an osteoblast-derived protein that provides endocrine control, is a hormone that regulates glucose and energy homeostasis. By controlling gene expression in β-cells and adipocytes, OCN improves glucose intolerance, obesity, and insulin expression. In addition, OCN stimulates the secretion of adiponectin, a molecule that increases fatty acid oxidation and insulin secretion and sensitivity in adipose tissue and reduces adipose tissue accumulation. Recent research suggests that serum OCN increases the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) and uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1) genes, which play a role in thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue, it also affects insulin sensitivity by increasing adiponectin expression in white adipose tissue. OCN the target gene of insulin, and resting energy expenditure and mitochondrial biogenesis. With all these effects, OCN is a protein that has recently been found to be associated with diabetes and obesity components.<br /> <b>Conclusions: </b>This review aims to present an overview of understanding the interaction of OCN produced by osteoblasts with insulin, glucose metabolism, adipose tissue, skeletal and muscle tissue, and appetite metabolism in understanding the endocrine functions of bone. In addition, it was conducted to examine the role of OCN in energy metabolism and to evaluate the relationship of energy metabolism pathways affected by OCN with non-communicable chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity.

Abstract:
Background and aims: Epidural analgesia has been considerably used for postoperative analgesia in Orthopaedic surgeries, however, combination of opioid and non-opioid medications in the perioperative period seems to provide an effective alternative. Objectives: To compare the efficacy of pre-emptive multimodal analgesia with combined spinal epidural for postoperative analgesia in lower limb arthroplasties. Materials and methods: 50 patients scheduled for elective lower limb Arthroplasties were randomly divided into two groups. Spinal anaesthesia with 2.5ml of 0.5% Bupivacaine (heavy) plus 0.5ml (25µg) Fentanyl was given in both the groups for procedure. Group I received Cap. Pregabalin 150mg and Inj Paracetamol 1000mg IV 1 hour before surgery and 75mg 12 hourly and 1000mg IV 8 hourly respectively, while Group II received epidural top up with 10 ml of 0.125% bupivacaine 8 hourly, both for 3 days postoperatively. Perioperative haemodynamics, postoperative VAS, rescue analgesics requirement, and Patient satisfaction level were monitored for 72 hours. Results: Postoperative VAS score was significantly higher in Group II from 4th hour postoperatively, and, accordingly, more patients in this group required rescue analgesia (21 and 20 in Group II vs 10 and 1 in group I in 12-24 hrs and 24-36 hrs respectively with p value <0.001). Modified Bromage score, haemodynamics and side effect profiles were comparable in the groups, however, patient satisfaction level was more in Group I (p value <0.001) after 72 hours. Conclusion: Pre-emptive multimodal analgesia can be used as an effective alternative to epidural for postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing lower limb joint replacement surgeries. Keywords: Pre-emptive multimodal analgesia, Combined spinal epidural analgesia, Lower limb arthroplasties, Postoperative analgesia

Abstract:
Mathematical modeling is considered a bridge to STEM education and has been incorporated into K–12 mathematics curriculums in various countries. However, it has a relatively short history in Hong Kong schools. The lack of high-quality, relevant exemplars of mathematical modeling activities is a challenge to teacher practice in this area. Hence, this study aims to establish a design framework for mathematical modeling activities suitable for teachers and students in Hong Kong. We explore the design and content of the official mathematical modeling exemplars published by the Hong Kong Education Bureau using a document analysis approach. The findings provide the basis for developing a framework to be used in the future design of mathematical modeling activities. Four exemplars were found and analyzed in terms of their structural components, level of learning experience in mathematical modeling, and design characteristics. Based on our findings, we discussed various strategies to enhance the design of a mathematical modeling activity, including setting diversified learning objectives, cross-subject collaboration when formulating the problem context and instructions, designing more activities suitable for average and underperforming students, emphasizing the evaluation of modeling outcomes, and providing relevant supporting materials. Our study thus lays the groundwork for advancing the teaching and learning of mathematical modeling in school contexts.
