Abstract:
This study is aimed at applying Haliday’s theory of textual function in writing editorials of “Haluan” daily newspaper. The theory says that unmarked theme tends to be used if a newspaper’s editorial shows an agreement with certain issues widely spread throughout the community. Meanwhile, marked theme is mostly used when a newspaper’s editorial shows disagreement with certain issues. This study takes 10 editorial texts of “Haluan” daily newspaper as the source of data. These editorials were published from May to July 2006. Based on the findings, 8 out of 10 editorials use marked theme as the most dominant theme type, while the other two editorials use unmarked theme most frequently. These findings show that both theme types are used in Haluan’s editorials. It is also found that Haliday’s theory is applied in writing editorials of “Haluan”: unmarked theme shows an agreement, while marked theme indicates a disagreement. Nevertheless, in some editorials, Haliday’s theory is not applied.

A recent editorial in this journal addressed the role and significance of social theory in an era of “new conservatism”. The editorial prompted a specific defence of Marxian social theory and its relevance for contemporary analysis, which in turn led to a series of commentaries which amount to nothing less than a wide-reaching reconsideration of the whole realm of social theory in urban and regional analysis.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho é examinar algumas práticas do mercado editorial do cordel no século XX.

Abstract:
This research investigates the editorial coverage of two elite newspapers of Pakistan; Daily the News International and Daily Dawn regarding electricity crisis in Pakistan from June 2010 to May 2011. For this research study, 49 editorials were studied, comprised 648 sentences. Twenty-two editorials (291 sentences) in Daily Dawn and 27 editorials (357 sentences) published in Daily the News International during the proposed period of the study. All editorial sentences are divided into five different categories; Causes, Effects, Reactions, Solutions and Miscellaneous of the electricity crisis according to the nature of data. The study finds out that both newspapers gave 22.06% favourable, 36.57% unfavourable coverage, while 41.35% neutral coverage on the issue which shows that both the newspapers have given more neutral coverage. The researcher used framing theory as a theoretical framework. In light of results, the researcher concluded that the media framed this crisis in a neutral way.

Abstract:
The principal ulterior motive of this research was to break down the essential content of news editorials considering the details of Arab- Israel relations by a different newspaper. This circumstantial research appraised how much and in which direction diligence was paid to Arab- Israel relations news in the editorial of these newspapers. To delve into the status of Arab- Israel relations in the editorials of elite newspapers, content dissection was conducted. Two theories, the first agenda-setting theory and the second framing theory, were taken as a frame of current research. The determination of detailed results of this study concluded that most of the newspaper contents bounced on the Arab- Israel conflict/crisis and Israel latterly a pperception by Arabs that were highly addressed in the given time period. Conclusion of the quarter editorials summed up the multiple viewpoints. 2/3 of all editorials altercate the nonscientific affirmation. Tehran times had content that was contemptible of scientific affirmation. On the other hand, "The Washington Post" showed more addiction to focus the Arab- Israel relations.

Abstract:
The study "Role of Local Press in Conflict: A Case Study of Editorial' Contents of Daily Chand and Daily Shamal during Militancy in district Swat, Pakistan" is basically a comparison of editorials, being published on the issue of militancy in both the local dailies of Swat to analyze that how these dailies treated government and militants’ agendas in their editorials. This study was conducted by content analysis of editorials of Daily Chand and Daily Shamal, publishing from district Swat while the media hegemony theory was applied as theoretical frame work for conducting the study. The findings made it clear that both the dailies had been given more coverage to militants' agenda, the ruling class during the unrest, than government agenda. Daily Chand had written total 84 editorials on the issue of militancy, it wrote 12 (14 percent) editorials against government but not a single editorial had been written against militants. Besides the daily had given only 06 percent supportive coverage to government agenda by publishing 05 editorials while the paper had, however, given more supportive coverage to militants by publishing 17 editorials in favor of their agenda with 20 percent of its total editorials, being published on the issue of militancy. Similarly daily Shamal had written 61 editorials on issue of militancy and of them only three editorials had been written with percentage of 05 percent in support of government agenda while it published two editorials in favor of militants' agenda, which reflect 03 percent of the total editorials, being written on the issue of militancy. Daily Shamal wrote o8 editorials (13 percent) against the provincial government, but it did not write even a single editorial to oppose militants' agenda or their any kind of act, meant to challenge writ of the government in district Swat, Pakistan.

Demers, David K. "Structural Pluralism, Corporate Newspaper Structure, and News Source Perceptions: Another Test of the Editorial Vigor Hypothesis." Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly 75, no. 3 (September 1998): 572–92. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/107769909807500311.

Abstract:
A recent content analysis of newspaper editorials and letters to the editor disputes the conventional wisdom that newspapers become less vigorous editorially as they acquire the characteristics of the corporate form of organization. However, many scholars remain skeptical. This study tested the editorial vigor hypothesis using an alternative methodology: a national probability survey of mainstream news sources (mayors and police chiefs). The data provide partial support for the corporate structure theory - the more structurally complex the newspaper, the more news sources perceived that paper as being critical of them and their institutions. Drawing on previous research and these findings, the author argues corporate newspapers are more critical because they are more likely to be located in pluralistic communities, which contain more social conflict and criticism of dominant groups and value systems, and because they are more insulated from local political pressures. From a broader perspective, the results may be interpreted as supporting theories which hold that the pace of social change quickens as social systems become more structurally pluralistic.

There is a very good and useful book waiting to escape from this collection on journalism and public affairs in New Zealand. Its editorial troika of scholars (from three different universities) have set themselves laudable but editorially exacting goals, made more demanding by the accelerated climate of academic publishing. The stated editorial intent is to address the ‘tensions between [journalistic] practitioners and academics … exemplified in the enduring tendency to see “theory” and “practice” as irrevocably opposed’ (p. 21), and to ‘redirect [New Zealand journalism] towards a more critical and reflexive position of intellectual confidence and independence’ (p. 24).

Abstract:
This year has certainly had its share of controversies. Ideologies and perspectives seem more dichotomous than ever. Yet, as the result of editing the 2017 Journal of Invitational Theory and Practice, my “Whispering Self” (Purkey, 2002) clearly revealed a beacon of hope: “those who apply Invitational Education look for ways to successfully summon people to see themselves as able, valuable, and responsible and then to behave accordingly” (Purkey & Novak, 2016, p 10). The JITP advances the tenets of Invitational Education (IE) theory and practices to optimize educational equity in quality. While education is the endeavor that strengthens a mind, frees a spirit, and enriches a society, the JITP will not be limited to educational stakeholders. Rather, the JITP editor welcomes all opportunities to promote the study, application, and research of Invitational Theory and Practice (ITP).

Abstract:
The 2018 Journal of Invitational Theory and Practice (JITP) advances the tenets of Invitational Education (IE) theory and practices to optimize educational equity in quality. Despite the dichotomy exhibited by current politics, IE practitioners will ideally find unanimity in the belief that education is the endeavor that strengthens a mind, frees a spirit, and enriches a society. Consumers will find the research and documented practices within the 2018 JITP reinforce how Invitational Education Theory and Practice effectively provides an interdependent framework to empower people, places, policies, programs, and processes (the Five P’s) to “address the total culture or ecosystem of almost any organization” (Purkey and Siegel, 2013, p. 104). The result optimizes the “direction and purpose for all Invitational thought and action” (Purkey & Novak, 2016, p 11), creates an opportunity for stakeholders to realize their full potential, and nurtures an intentionally inviting stance.

Broadly speaking, socio-cultural theory informs a great deal of our understanding of teaching and learning in music. To grasp this understanding and unpack the layers of experiences requires countless hours of observing, listening, questioning, analysing, interviewing, notating, consulting, verifying and at times, becoming as one with the research participants in order to capture their experiences at first hand. In so doing, we generate research that builds knowledge, deepens understanding and extends theory. Invariably, it is a slow process.

Abstract:

SummaryBackground: In 1962, Methods of Information in Medicine (MIM) began to publish papers on the methodology and scientific fundamentals of managing data, information, and knowledge in biomedicine and health care. Meeting an increasing demand for research about practical implementation of health information systems, the journal Applied Clinical Informatics (ACI) was launched in 2009. Both journals are official journals of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA).Objectives: Based on prior analyses, we aimed to describe major topics published in MIM during 2014 and to explore whether theory of MIM influenced practice of ACI. Our objectives were further to describe lessons learned and to discuss possible editorial policies to improve bridging from theory to practice. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational study reviewing MIM articles published during 2014 (N=61) and analyzing reference lists of ACI articles from 2014 (N=70). Lessons learned and opinions about MIM editorial policies were developed in consensus by the two authors. These have been influenced by discussions with the journal’s associate editors and editorial board members. Results: The publication topics of MIM in 2014 were broad, covering biomedical and health informatics, medical biometry and epidemiology. Important topics discussed were biosignal interpretation, boosting methodologies, citation analysis, health-enabling and ambient assistive technologies, health record banking, safety, and standards. Nine ACI practice articles from 2014 cited eighteen MIM theory papers from any year. These nine ACI articles covered mainly the areas of clinical documentation and medication-related decision support. The methodological basis they cited from was almost exclusively related to evaluation. We could show some direct links where theory impacted practice. These links are however few in relation to the total amount of papers published. Conclusions: Editorial policies such as publishing systematic methodological reviews and clarification of possible practical impact of theory-focused articles may improve bridging.

The aspiration of the 2019 Journal of Invitational Theory and Practice (JITP) is to further advance the tenets of Invitational Education (IE). Advocates of IE theory know others are better served by inviting and modeling dialogue that promotes critical thinking. By contrast, showing contempt only destroys motivation and incites division. Therefore, let intentionality, care, optimism, respect, and trust (I-CORT) guide all your educational and leadership endeavors. May the year 2020 provide perfect clarity, many endeavors to nurture an intentionally inviting stance, and numerous opportunities to encourage optimal human potential.
