Abstract:
In this thesis I have conducted a critical discourse analysis of foureditorial texts, published in the newspapers Aftonbladet, DagensNyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet. Drawing on theoriesabout media discourses (Fairclough 1995), agenda-setting(McCombs & Shaw 1972) and framing (Goffman 1974), I haveexamined how the findings of Bolin et al (2016) correlate with discursivelyframed representations in these texts, in regards to negative, positive or neutral framing of border controls, immigrationand the connection made to political parties during the first weekof January 2016, when the Swedish temporary border controlswere introduced. The results showed both consistencies and inconsistencies in regardsto framing, where the liberal newspapers Dagens Nyheterand Expressen’s editorials were less negative towards the bordercontrols and expressed more negative and stereotypical framingson refugees and migration than expected, whereas the independentsocial democratic Aftonbladet expressed the assumed negativeframing on border controls and the Social Democrates, and positiveframing on migration. The most unexpected findings wasSvenska Dagbladet that contrary to the previous findings in Bolinet al’s study framed migration positively and took the most explicitstand against the border controls. The findings may indicate a politicaland cultural change due to the change in directions in theSocial Democrats migration politics.

Paul, Joseph Gavin. "The imprints of performance : editorial mediations of Shakespeare's drama." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2853.

Abstract:
The Imprints of Performance is motivated by a longstanding interest in the fundamental interpretive challenges that face readers of printed plays. Reading a playtext is a means of dramatic realization that is absolutely unlike live performance, and it is not without good reason that theoretical formulations of page and stage tend to stress the incompatibility of the two modes. Without denying that printed plays distort and fragment performance practice, my dissertation negotiates an intractable debate by shifting attention to points of intersection in the rich printed and performance histories of Shakespeare's plays. I detail how editors of Shakespeare encode for information that could otherwise only be communicated in performance, how, via ancillaries such as critical introductions, emended stage directions, and performance commentary, editors facilitate a reader's ability to imagine performances. Central to my engagements with the informational structures of the edited page is the term performancescape, a textual representation of performance potential that gives relative shape and stability to what is dynamic and multifarious. I deploy performancescape in relation to editions ranging from the earliest extant quartos and folios to digital editions powered by hypertext. In analyzing formative editions from Shakespeare's long textual history, I highlight instances where the malleability of the printed page renders awareness of performance an integral, and in some ways unavoidable, condition of the reading experience.

Abstract:
Pound foregrounded the importance of "shaping" poetic books through particular arrangements of individual poems by using his ideogrammic method as the crucial organizational principle for constructing Personae (1926). Critics have long understood Pound's use of the ideogrammic method in individual poems, but have so far ignored his application of it to the structuring of poetic books and sequences. Lea Baechler and A. Walton Litz, the editors of a 1990 edition of Personae (1926), however, have moved a crucial section of poems, and their rearrangement of the original text both disregards evidence of authorial intention and obscures Pound's innovative principles for arranging his shorter poems into meaningful sequences.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT : As technology advances, the textbook is facing some difficulties to establish itself as a dynamic and attractive alternative, able to compete with digital media. This research aims to create a printed book to support children, music students, aged 5 to 8 years. It has also been faced the challenge of explaining the importance of contemporary editorial design (in particular, music teaching manuals), as well as the role of designers in the construction of educational materials. As such, we considered the opportunity of doing a practical project as the propitious environment to this analysis. The project will be divided into two parts. The first, theoretical, serves as an introduction, with a theoretical context to address the issue. The second part is a practical part, including intermediate stages (such as meetings between stakeholders, the planning of all content, graphic decisions, the detailed record of the work done during the months of work), culminating in the materialization and evaluation of the book. With the fulfillment of this project, we aim to understand what are the main difficulties in musical education from the use of school textbooks and, in particular, to use the resources of Graphic Design for musical education, through Gordon’s Music Learning Theory. The expected results are a greater theoretical and practical knowledge on the editorial area, and a relevant contribution to knowledge—in particular to the design of textbooks for children who want to learn music—a subject that is very dear to the researcher.

Menzies-Pike, Catriona Jane. "The Composition of the Modernist Book: Ulysses, A Draft of XXX Cantos and The Making of Americans." University of Sydney, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1544.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy
This is a study of the composition of three Modernist first editions: Ulysses (1922), The Making of Americans (1925) and A Draft of XXX Cantos (1930). The bibliographical and figurative commitments made to being in print by Ulysses, A Draft of XXX Cantos and The Making of Americans set a coherent program for reading Modernist texts in their perfected form: in print. The editorial reception of the Modernist book has proceeded, however, with reference to the editorial and bibliographical principles established by the New Bibliographers. In deferring to the authors and manuscripts of Modernist books as the highest source of textual authority, the vital significance of being in print to literary Modernism is obscured. The figure of the ideal Book concentrates the central aesthetic, intellectual and bibliographic problem posed the Modernist book: the making of literature. The rhyme with The Making of Americans is appropriate: this book intensifies and consolidates the propositions made about objective and autonomous composition made more hesitantly by Ulysses and A Draft of XXX Cantos. These three books display a gradual refusal to equate inscription and intention; their composition effaces all traces of a sovereign creative subjectivity. The vision of the book guides Modernist composition, and requires a critical distinction be drawn between manuscripts and printed letters. Modernism must be read in print. The vestigial nostalgia for Romantic modes of textual production and creation in Ulysses is repeated on the placards and proof-pages for the book. Printed drafts are revised and reformed by the pen of the author. The finality asserted by the printed letter is only reluctantly ceded on the publication of Ulysses. The composition of A Draft of XXX Cantos represents a further transition away from the script economy of Romanticism. The interplay between authorial typescripts, early publications and the first edition of A Draft of XXX Cantos assert an intermediate order of Modernist textuality which takes the printed page as its foundation. The Making of Americans relies on the absolute objectivity and anonymity of its composition for the effect of its narrative. Objectivity is the intellectual and aesthetic strategy which produces literature rather than the personality and memory of the author. The impersonality of the apparently automatically written manuscripts and scarcely revised typescripts for The Making of Americans severs the visible links between the writing author and her page. In their unwillingness to corroborate the modes of textual generation described by the New Bibliographers, these three books thematise their own composition as the exemplary Modernist and modern mode of textual generation. The Modernist book attenuates or denies a Romantic connection between the creative hand of the author and the surface image of the page: the mechanisms of print deliberately detach the author from the literary text. The distance of the author from the scene of textual reproduction is measured by the printed book. The composition of this analytical object is not a fallacy but an actuality, commemorated in the archive, enacted by the book. Modernism is the literature of the imprimatur rather than of authorial inscription and accordingly it is towards the first editions of Modernist texts that the attentions of editors and textual scholars must be directed.

Abstract:
On the 1990s, Brazilians editorial market watched the rise of self help books including light business to the best sellers book charts. Initially harshly criticized by the main press, these books not only pullulated in the charts on the 1990s, but have gathered the status of an editorial niche in Brazil, successful to this day. The success and the emergency of this editorial niche were understood in this research through field theory. Based on this theory, the positions of the incumbents actors (authors and editors), as well as their strategies to gain and maintain dominants positions on the field and their relations to other fields pertinent to its development were analyzed. Certain self-help books authors agency was perceived as a key element to understand the triumph of these books on Brazilians editorial market. Gurus are social skilled actors that made possible the emergence of this new market. They are the authors of self-help books, consultants and speakers, whom use their books as only one of their means to legitimate their ideas to their audience. Through the study of one well-known Brazilian guru trajectory (Roberto Shinyashiki), it is shown how the conjunction of their strategies, activities and self-presentation has acquired him his reputation as a guru, which, combined with his continuous transit throughout editorial and corporative worlds and his performances on media, play key roles to the emergence of a new editorial niche in the 1990s on Brazil.

The aim of this study is to examine how implicit persuasion and argumentation occurr in editorials published in the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo regarding texture: its formation through the textual modes, verification of how assessment is built, analysis of rhetorical devices and application of Toulmin s rhetorical model of argumentation. I analyze three editorials published between August and September 2010, during the months that preceded the presidential election. Because of their social relevance, texts that addressed the candidacy of Rousseff were chosen. The analysis of the editorial is organized into four parts. First text structure is classified using representational modes proposed by Reynolds (2000). Secondly, I analyze personnel (evaluative) and interactional function (roles and mode), as proposed by Halliday (1994), Martin (2000) and Thompson and Thetela (1995). Thirdly, I analyze the use of rhetorical devices like voices (WAUGH, 1995), intersubjectivity (KÄRKKÄINEN, 2006), dog whistle politics (COFFIN; O HALLORAN, 2006) and smuggling of information (LUCHJENBROERS; ALDRIDGE, 2007). Lastly, I analyze the subfunctions of argument (REYNOLDS, 2000) and validation of the arguments (TOULMIN, 1958). Besides these authors, directly related to methodology, I use as reference Kitis and Milapides (1997), about crypto-argumentation, Fowler (1987) on critical linguistics, among others. The editorial analysis showed that ASSERTIONS do not arise at the beginning of the text. In general, the first few paragraphs have PREDICTION and HYPOTHESISING. Also, the arguments rely on the descriptions and narratives and voices. Modalized and implicit evaluations are quite frequent, often under the form of smuggling of information and dog whistle and associated with the phenomenon of logogenesis to build negative Appreciations or Judgements

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to map the network of actors involved in the translation of Hilda Hilsts A\"obscena\"senhora\"D into English, which was published in the United States in 2012 under the title The\"Obscene\"Madame\"D. The greater part of the work, interviews with each of these actors, is analyzed under André Lefeveres patronage theory and Bruno Latours actorbnetwork theory, as applied by Hélène Buzelin to translation and publishing. Among the peculiar aspects of this translation is that it was copublished by two publishing houses, and that, too is analyzed according to a theory by Hélène Buzelin. Other translations of Hilda Hilsts works into English will be mentioned, thus creating a panorama of the authors body of work in the United States. In the end, this research aims to have illuminated aspects of the Brazilian and American publishing market when it comes to translation of Brazilian literature into English and the work of independent publishers.

Hiller, Moritz. "Maschinenphilologie." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2021. http://edoc.hu-berlin.de/18452/23730.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is in pursuit of the elusive agent of philology. Be it literary archives which curate digital remains, textual criticism which processes computer software, or the Digital Humanities as an alleged new paradigm of humanities, digital media poses particular challenges for philology today—not only as an object of study, but also as a methodological tool. "Machine Philology" confronts these challenges, asking more generally how a particular type of machinery affects the premises, practices, and institutions of a scientific field informed by traditional humanism. Central to the project is an inquiry into the notion of subjectivity. For, where not only human beings, but also their machinic Other, reads, writes, archives, and edits, it is to be argued that philology has—following N. Katherine Hayles—become posthumanistic. The dissertation uses this as an opportunity for a fundamental reconsideration of the entangled network of human beings and media that philology can be described as, evacuated of any human-exceptionalism: Philology today is machine philology.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Within the last three decades, contemporary North America came to reinvent a socially focused genre of literary personal narratives. These new editorial and writing projects, published in the form of collections of personal narratives, emerged as a tool for the socially voiceless to secure some measure of agency in their contemporary social and cultural situation. Projects such as the Freedom Writers’ Diary or volumes of the Voice of Witness book series fit in the process that is currently labeled social empowerment. Witnesses express a deep urge to share their story in the hope to denounce their experience of an enduring social injustice. The written word, primary a means for self-disclosure, serves to exorcise the suffering associated to this specific predicament. The narrators engage in a powerful self-investigative gesture oriented towards resilience and renewed enfranchisement in regaining control over their life and environment. At the moment of publication, however, these testimonies come to be validated as authentic examples of the injustices they disclose. These examples serve an educational purpose: raising the audience’s awareness and opening deliberative fora for these issues to be discussed and for solutions to be hammered out and eventually implemented.

The purpose of this dissertation is to propose a theoretical model for the subgenre of testimonials of social empowerment. With the concept of empowerment as groundwork, the model develops a textual approach framed in a psychosocial structure. I argue that testimonials may be described as examples of Jürgen Habermas’s communicative action. As speech acts aimed at reaching understanding, testimonials capitalize both on the binding and bonding aspects of illocutionary force in the hope to secure with their audience an ongoing dialogue over issues of social justice. The volumes, as unofficial public spheres, mobilize the normative and practical dynamics at work in social movements. These dynamics express as two narrative guiding threads: an aesthetic based on impact, and an ethics based on responsibility. The texts’ aesthetic develops a form of perlocutionary realism instantiating a sense of authenticity and sincerity embodied in the narrators’ voices. The resulting impact is coupled to moral concerns based on a polysemic understanding of social responsibility, on which narrators seek to build their narratives’ ethical potential. A series of case studies allowed to demonstrate that both narrative threads are realized as an appropriation of four paradigmatic forms of rhetorical ethos, each based on a specific realm of the social world: intimacy, justice, spirituality and activism.

Finn, Patrick James. "Pre-codex to post-codex : editorial theory in the second incunabulum." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/7918.

Abstract:
This project studies the ways recent changes in cultural theory and information technology are influencing the delivery of texts, and how these changes signal a need for innovation in editing practice. The word incunabulum describes the material objects produced in the early stages of the development of a technology; most commonly, it refers to printing during the period just before the turn of the sixteenth century when material textuality in the west was changing from a manuscript to a print base. According to critics of digital culture like Janet Murray the current shift to digital media entails many of the same changes. Following this, I will refer to this period as the second incunabulum. Given the limitations of HTML and SGML markup and storage technologies used in early digitization projects, scholars realize that the second incunabular period, much like the first, will not be a simple linear change succession. Just as the shift from manuscript to print involved a multifaceted series of complex social and practical transformations over decades, our current technological transition generates a wide variety of communicative, cultural, and political implications. As a critical point of entry, the comparison of the first and second incunabular periods offers insight into the ways in which past practices can help us approach our textual future. As a broad study of highly particular textual practices, the current work presents something of a paradox. However, through a series of focused historical readings and formal applications, this trans-historical study provokes questions that may lead to effective new work in the field. In Theories of the Text, leading editorial theorist D.C. Greetham points out the need to study the same three projects that I examine: William Langland's Piers Plowman, The Oxford Shakespeare, and James Joyce's Ulysses. By examining the editorial practices underlying each work, I develop a theory of editing based on a form of philological critique that engages with problems faced by many current research projects and which provides suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
Despite the evolution of digital media affords a personalized sharing of information, the Television, mainly the generalist type, still have, nowadays, the primacy in searching current information by the majority of public (Buckley, 2008; Colvin, 2007). Television news, before being a public affair, passes through many conception phases (news making process) - search, selection, writing and final edition - each one with capability to generate symbolic "senses" to the news, understood in its minimum portion - journalistic item - and in its global format - the journal. This doctoral thesis is focused, essentially, in the selection phase, where gatekeeping happens. This is a filtering phenomenon, controlled by objective systems of rules or by gatekeepers - an individual or a group who has the power to decide if information can pass or if it is blocked (Lewin, 1947:145). However, the editorial decision making is much more complex than a mere select or elimination of news items that come to the newsroom gates. Our analysis focused on contents and on shapes of news, because both are enable to give significance to the information. We raised the following research question: "How do the editors of the Telejornal (RTP) perceive the underlying constraints of the selection process they use to decide about factuality, and in which way those constraints are used in the construction of the news alignment?”. We adopted a naturalistic observation of editorial decision-making, participating in the editorial briefings, supported by ethnographic interviews to the decision makers and the journalists, and also semi-structured interviews only to the decision makers. We also performed a content analysis for all the news emitted, through a set of registry categories and units of analysis that allows to understand the social construction of the reality through the transmitted information. The segmentation of issues and the thematic areas for too scarce times and its subsequent priorization, based on the position in which they are placed in the sequential structure of news, the types of narratives shapes, the approaches angles, the news values and sources privileged, the available markets, the competitors’ offers, the social system rules, etc., are some of the many factors that transform an occurrence into a “news happening”. Concluding, we faced several factors that exert positive 'forces' (opportunities) and / or negative ones (constraints) in the decision-making process. This process is far from being linear, and it is highly influenced by the social system, and by the organization. This investigation demonstrated the relevance of the integrationist theories of gatekeeping, which do not isolate a single factor of influence in a dynamic process as the editorial decision-making.

Msiza, Nkosinathi. "Editorial politricks : a content analysis of selected newspapers' coverage of the ANC, DA and EFF during the 2016 local government elections in South Africa." Diss., 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/24733.

Abstract:
Global research shows that media owners tend to influence the editorial direction of their newspapers. Such influence generally tends to be in line with the media owner’s economic and / or political interests. Naturally, this is a challenge because media is regarded as the fourth estate and is supposed to be an objective yet effective channel for the citizenry to make informed decisions about their world. The study seeks to find out if the owners of four daily newspapers in South Africa, based on their political proximity; may have influenced their newspapers to be biased in favour or against any of the three biggest political parties contesting the 2016 Local Government Elections. This study is an exploratory and descriptive content analysis based on an Agenda Setting theoretic framework – supported by framing analysis and game framing. Findings reveal the correlation between the media owner’s interests and the biased reporting within their respective newspaper. This suggests that although media may not be directly or explicitly forced to adopt a specific ideology, it can be argued that political relations with media owners can influence editorial decisions. Therefore, it can be inferred that media owners of The New Age, The Citizen and The Star influenced editorial content of their newspapers during the 2016 local government elections. Given the findings of this study and the elections scheduled for 2019 in South Africa, it is important for more political communication studies to be conducted in order to establish guidelines for unbiased news reporting across all media – including newspapers. Alternatively, to compel media owners to declare their bias towards and against specific political parties in each news content, upfront. Particularly important during election period, is the need for each media (including newspapers) to have an independent editor – potentially one from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to ensure that each piece of content produced is validated as bias or impartial.

Howard, Ashley. "Florists and feasts: a critical digital edition of Ralph Knevet's Rhodon and Iris." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/12115.

Full text
Abstract:
One spring afternoon in 1631, the Norwich Society of Florists held a feast to celebrate and display its exquisite flowers. The celebration included an entertainment written just for the occasion—Ralph Knevet's quirky play about a war among flowers. Early modern florists were not the sort of people who sold cut flowers in shops; rather, they were experts in floriculture who applied this knowledge to cultivate new flowers. Norwich was already renowned for its gardens, but flowers soon became even more significant. Rhodon and Iris was performed just before tulipomania, a frenzy of tulip cultivation lasting from c.1634 – 1637. During this period, florists grew elaborate multi-coloured flower bulbs that sold for extremely high prices. In other words, the florists' feast and Knevet's play emerged when flowers were important to the economy and identity of Norwich. My thesis presents an open-access, digital critical edition of Rhodon and Iris encoded in TEI-P5. This edition offers an old-spelling transcription of the 1631 playbook, a modernized text with annotations, and a critical introduction. Responding to the need for more editions of non-canonical early modern plays, my research widens the otherwise Shakespeare-centric canon and helps make more early modern drama accessible to student readers. Rhodon and Iris also merits critical attention on its own grounds: an example of Caroline occasional drama, the play experiments with convention and offers a rare glimpse into the Society of Florists. My thesis approaches the play with special interest in editorial praxis, ecotheory, and the history of floriculture. The florists' feast delighted audiences and participated in a tradition of floral celebrations—one reaching, at least, from the ancient Roman ludi Florales to the modern Netflix series The Big Flower Fight.

Hannon, Sheila. "Endorsement Editorials: Rhetorical Strategies of Compelling Arguments." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/6680.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports on a rhetorical study of endorsement editorials published in Canadian newspapers during the spring 2011 federal election. These editorials, intended to encourage readers to support or vote for a candidate or party, draw their persuasive power from a combination of rhetorical genres and appeals. An endorsement editorial expresses a newspaper’s backing of a party or candidate; it may also urge readers to support and vote in a similar manner. Endorsement editorials are a significant area of study because they are usually published only during election campaigns and respond to a perceived exigence or need to address pressing issues. My sample set includes editorials published in English-language daily newspapers: the Globe and Mail, National Post, Toronto Star, and Toronto Sun. The Toronto Star published two endorsement editorials, one of which I describe as a “dis-endorsement” to reflect the message to not support a specific political party. This study examines three elements I deem important for successful argumentation: arrangement, argumentative strategy, and audience. I identify seven elements of an endorsement editorial: thesis, endorsement, call-to-action, kairos or time-to-act, evidence, refutation, and context. My study draws on the theoretical frameworks of Chaim Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca and Stephen Toulmin as well as Kenneth Burke’s concepts of identification and expectation. I illustrate that endorsement editorials reveal the underlying values and beliefs of a newspaper, both reflecting and constructing power relations within society. This dissertation theorizes that endorsement editorials create persuasive arguments by combining deliberative discourse with forensic and epideictic rhetoric. Endorsement editorials debate the expediency of a course of action, in particular electing a party or leader to govern, exemplifying deliberative discourse. But they also employ forensic discourse to justify their decisions on the basis of the past actions of the parties or candidates. In addition, epideictic rhetoric is used to praise or blame political participants. Although logos might be anticipated to predominate in a text dealing with the future of the country, endorsement editorials incorporate all three appeals, with pathos and ethos often the strongest, to produce compelling arguments.

Abstract:
This Master's thesis entitled "The Influence of Web Analytics on Journalism" examines the impact of web analytics on journalistic routines in the Czech Republic. The theoretical frame focuses on history of origin and development of czech online news media as well as the change of journalistic work in the environment of online media. An inseparable part of the theoretical section is also an introduction to the topic of editorial analytics. The theory of gatekeeping frames our research and helps us define specific research questions. Qualitative research was conducted using semi-structured in-depth interviews with ten journalists to answer the research questions. Results showed who is in charge of editorial analytics in newsrooms and how often are analytical tools used. Then the purpose of usage of editorial analytics was found and described in the interpretative part. In conclusion the results provided us with detailed information about the specific impact of analytics on journalistic routines including appearance of home pages, headlines and photos, selection of topics, links to other articles etc. The key findigs of this research were enriched by conclusions of similar foreign studies.
