Abstract:
This study is aimed at applying Haliday’s theory of textual function in writing editorials of “Haluan” daily newspaper. The theory says that unmarked theme tends to be used if a newspaper’s editorial shows an agreement with certain issues widely spread throughout the community. Meanwhile, marked theme is mostly used when a newspaper’s editorial shows disagreement with certain issues. This study takes 10 editorial texts of “Haluan” daily newspaper as the source of data. These editorials were published from May to July 2006. Based on the findings, 8 out of 10 editorials use marked theme as the most dominant theme type, while the other two editorials use unmarked theme most frequently. These findings show that both theme types are used in Haluan’s editorials. It is also found that Haliday’s theory is applied in writing editorials of “Haluan”: unmarked theme shows an agreement, while marked theme indicates a disagreement. Nevertheless, in some editorials, Haliday’s theory is not applied.

Abstract:
In this thesis I have conducted a critical discourse analysis of foureditorial texts, published in the newspapers Aftonbladet, DagensNyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet. Drawing on theoriesabout media discourses (Fairclough 1995), agenda-setting(McCombs & Shaw 1972) and framing (Goffman 1974), I haveexamined how the findings of Bolin et al (2016) correlate with discursivelyframed representations in these texts, in regards to negative, positive or neutral framing of border controls, immigrationand the connection made to political parties during the first weekof January 2016, when the Swedish temporary border controlswere introduced. The results showed both consistencies and inconsistencies in regardsto framing, where the liberal newspapers Dagens Nyheterand Expressen’s editorials were less negative towards the bordercontrols and expressed more negative and stereotypical framingson refugees and migration than expected, whereas the independentsocial democratic Aftonbladet expressed the assumed negativeframing on border controls and the Social Democrates, and positiveframing on migration. The most unexpected findings wasSvenska Dagbladet that contrary to the previous findings in Bolinet al’s study framed migration positively and took the most explicitstand against the border controls. The findings may indicate a politicaland cultural change due to the change in directions in theSocial Democrats migration politics.

Paul, Joseph Gavin. "The imprints of performance : editorial mediations of Shakespeare's drama." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2853.

Full text
Abstract:
The Imprints of Performance is motivated by a longstanding interest in the fundamental interpretive challenges that face readers of printed plays. Reading a playtext is a means of dramatic realization that is absolutely unlike live performance, and it is not without good reason that theoretical formulations of page and stage tend to stress the incompatibility of the two modes. Without denying that printed plays distort and fragment performance practice, my dissertation negotiates an intractable debate by shifting attention to points of intersection in the rich printed and performance histories of Shakespeare's plays. I detail how editors of Shakespeare encode for information that could otherwise only be communicated in performance, how, via ancillaries such as critical introductions, emended stage directions, and performance commentary, editors facilitate a reader's ability to imagine performances. Central to my engagements with the informational structures of the edited page is the term performancescape, a textual representation of performance potential that gives relative shape and stability to what is dynamic and multifarious. I deploy performancescape in relation to editions ranging from the earliest extant quartos and folios to digital editions powered by hypertext. In analyzing formative editions from Shakespeare's long textual history, I highlight instances where the malleability of the printed page renders awareness of performance an integral, and in some ways unavoidable, condition of the reading experience.

Full text
Abstract:
Pound foregrounded the importance of "shaping" poetic books through particular arrangements of individual poems by using his ideogrammic method as the crucial organizational principle for constructing Personae (1926). Critics have long understood Pound's use of the ideogrammic method in individual poems, but have so far ignored his application of it to the structuring of poetic books and sequences. Lea Baechler and A. Walton Litz, the editors of a 1990 edition of Personae (1926), however, have moved a crucial section of poems, and their rearrangement of the original text both disregards evidence of authorial intention and obscures Pound's innovative principles for arranging his shorter poems into meaningful sequences.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT : As technology advances, the textbook is facing some difficulties to establish itself as a dynamic and attractive alternative, able to compete with digital media. This research aims to create a printed book to support children, music students, aged 5 to 8 years. It has also been faced the challenge of explaining the importance of contemporary editorial design (in particular, music teaching manuals), as well as the role of designers in the construction of educational materials. As such, we considered the opportunity of doing a practical project as the propitious environment to this analysis. The project will be divided into two parts. The first, theoretical, serves as an introduction, with a theoretical context to address the issue. The second part is a practical part, including intermediate stages (such as meetings between stakeholders, the planning of all content, graphic decisions, the detailed record of the work done during the months of work), culminating in the materialization and evaluation of the book. With the fulfillment of this project, we aim to understand what are the main difficulties in musical education from the use of school textbooks and, in particular, to use the resources of Graphic Design for musical education, through Gordon’s Music Learning Theory. The expected results are a greater theoretical and practical knowledge on the editorial area, and a relevant contribution to knowledge—in particular to the design of textbooks for children who want to learn music—a subject that is very dear to the researcher.

Menzies-Pike, Catriona Jane. "The Composition of the Modernist Book: Ulysses, A Draft of XXX Cantos and The Making of Americans." University of Sydney, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1544.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy
This is a study of the composition of three Modernist first editions: Ulysses (1922), The Making of Americans (1925) and A Draft of XXX Cantos (1930). The bibliographical and figurative commitments made to being in print by Ulysses, A Draft of XXX Cantos and The Making of Americans set a coherent program for reading Modernist texts in their perfected form: in print. The editorial reception of the Modernist book has proceeded, however, with reference to the editorial and bibliographical principles established by the New Bibliographers. In deferring to the authors and manuscripts of Modernist books as the highest source of textual authority, the vital significance of being in print to literary Modernism is obscured. The figure of the ideal Book concentrates the central aesthetic, intellectual and bibliographic problem posed the Modernist book: the making of literature. The rhyme with The Making of Americans is appropriate: this book intensifies and consolidates the propositions made about objective and autonomous composition made more hesitantly by Ulysses and A Draft of XXX Cantos. These three books display a gradual refusal to equate inscription and intention; their composition effaces all traces of a sovereign creative subjectivity. The vision of the book guides Modernist composition, and requires a critical distinction be drawn between manuscripts and printed letters. Modernism must be read in print. The vestigial nostalgia for Romantic modes of textual production and creation in Ulysses is repeated on the placards and proof-pages for the book. Printed drafts are revised and reformed by the pen of the author. The finality asserted by the printed letter is only reluctantly ceded on the publication of Ulysses. The composition of A Draft of XXX Cantos represents a further transition away from the script economy of Romanticism. The interplay between authorial typescripts, early publications and the first edition of A Draft of XXX Cantos assert an intermediate order of Modernist textuality which takes the printed page as its foundation. The Making of Americans relies on the absolute objectivity and anonymity of its composition for the effect of its narrative. Objectivity is the intellectual and aesthetic strategy which produces literature rather than the personality and memory of the author. The impersonality of the apparently automatically written manuscripts and scarcely revised typescripts for The Making of Americans severs the visible links between the writing author and her page. In their unwillingness to corroborate the modes of textual generation described by the New Bibliographers, these three books thematise their own composition as the exemplary Modernist and modern mode of textual generation. The Modernist book attenuates or denies a Romantic connection between the creative hand of the author and the surface image of the page: the mechanisms of print deliberately detach the author from the literary text. The distance of the author from the scene of textual reproduction is measured by the printed book. The composition of this analytical object is not a fallacy but an actuality, commemorated in the archive, enacted by the book. Modernism is the literature of the imprimatur rather than of authorial inscription and accordingly it is towards the first editions of Modernist texts that the attentions of editors and textual scholars must be directed.

Abstract:
On the 1990s, Brazilians editorial market watched the rise of self help books including light business to the best sellers book charts. Initially harshly criticized by the main press, these books not only pullulated in the charts on the 1990s, but have gathered the status of an editorial niche in Brazil, successful to this day. The success and the emergency of this editorial niche were understood in this research through field theory. Based on this theory, the positions of the incumbents actors (authors and editors), as well as their strategies to gain and maintain dominants positions on the field and their relations to other fields pertinent to its development were analyzed. Certain self-help books authors agency was perceived as a key element to understand the triumph of these books on Brazilians editorial market. Gurus are social skilled actors that made possible the emergence of this new market. They are the authors of self-help books, consultants and speakers, whom use their books as only one of their means to legitimate their ideas to their audience. Through the study of one well-known Brazilian guru trajectory (Roberto Shinyashiki), it is shown how the conjunction of their strategies, activities and self-presentation has acquired him his reputation as a guru, which, combined with his continuous transit throughout editorial and corporative worlds and his performances on media, play key roles to the emergence of a new editorial niche in the 1990s on Brazil.

Abstract:
The book focuses on the editorial fortune of and on the imaginary built by sixteenth-century European lay and missionary sources on Japan. The author examines the cultural and economic processes that led to the circulation, or, in some cases, the lack of circulation of the sources. By exploring the interplay, in their contents, between ‘factuality’ and ‘myth’, between ‘classical imagery’ and ‘current observation’, she investigates the way their depiction of ‘Japan’ reflects ‘European’ self-images and desires. Finally, using the Italian editorial world – dominating the European book market at that time – as a case study, the author analyses the published sources from the perspective of historical bibliography, evaluating their impact on the readership.

Tecnologie riproduttive e tutela della persona. This book emerged from the collaboration between the department of Biolaw of the University of Florence and the non-profit association Madre Provetta. It represents the first stage in a larger editorial project that aspires to contribute study and research to build towards a common European law on bioethics. The authors who have collaborated on this book are among the leading experts, in their respective fields, on questions raised by technologies of reproduction, which are here elaborated at both medical-scientific level and in their relation to sociology, bioethics, law and politics. The various contributions are divided into three specific thematic areas: liberty of reproduction and rights of the individual, pre-implant genetic diagnosis and the freedom and limitations of scientific research.

Abstract:
Competing newspapers, after all, tend to publish the same information in agiven time frame. However, each editor tends to aggregate and present thenews according to certain criteria such as editorial policies, filteringstrategies, readers base, etc. Thus, the proper choice and filtering ofinformation makes one newspaper different from the other and, the propermanagement of such criteria, may deem the success or failure of a newspaper. From the editor’s perspective, the news selection process is a trade-offbetween informativeness and attractiveness, as determined by the readership.Could there be an optimal balance between these two conflicting forces? Moreover, is it possible that cultural and political inputs from social mediamay impact the news selection process?Political news on social networks represent nowadays a valuable informativeasset that gives the possibility to correlate newspaper information with publicrequest expressed on social networks. We believe that it is possible to developa theory to mitigate the newspaper’s cultural identity with the publicinformation needs collected on social media. In our work, we show how to measure the society request for information, andhow this can be conveyed.

Abstract:
Various models of editorial board members’ publishing in parent journal are examined. Editorial membership makes an important stage of the academic career; hence, this requires careful bibliometric examination of editor researchers’ publication strategies. We examine the popular approaches of editors-in-chief toward publications by their editorial board members’ in the parent journal, in the range from encouragement to prohibition. Using a sample of Russian library and information science journals, we demonstrate that the publication models of editorial board members depend on the journal’s rank.

Duda, Aneta. "THE BRANDCASTING ON THE EXAMPLE OF ADVERTORIALS." In NORDSCI Conference Proceedings. Saima Consult Ltd, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32008/nordsci2021/b2/v4/13.

Full text
Abstract:
"This article discusses the concept of brandcasting in the particular case of a controversial advertorial (ADL) - paid messages in the media sponsored by organized interests to create and sustain a favorable environment to pursue their respective goals. An advertorial is an advertisement masquerading as a journalistic article, blurring the dividing line between editorial content and advertorials. Based on the content analysis technique of 284 advertorials of Newsweek, Polityka and Time, the most widely circulated and read weekly newsmagazine in Poland and the United States of America, the author documents the placement of ADL: proportions of commercial and non-commercial content, detailed typologies, brand positioning, sponsor disclosures, the degree of similarity with journalistic texts and corporate and non-corporate interests. The newspaper advertorial borrows, or just steals editorial credibility from the newspaper and pollutes reliable information. There, of course, might be a place for such kind of advertisements, but they should be more thoroughly distinguished form editorial content than is currently the case. As shown in the article, media do not place sponsor disclosures prominently."

"Autoethnography of the Cultural Competence Exhibited at an African American Weekly Newspaper Organization." In InSITE 2019: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences: Jerusalem. Informing Science Institute, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4187.

Full text
Abstract:
[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2019 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 16] Aim/Purpose: Little is known of the cultural competence or leadership styles of a minority owned newspaper. This autoethnography serves to benchmark one early 1990s example. Background: I focused on a series of flashbacks to observe an African American weekly newspaper editor-in-chief for whom I reported to 25 years ago. In my reflections I sought to answer these questions: How do minorities in entrepreneurial organizations view their own identity, their cultural competence? What degree of this perception is conveyed fairly and equitably in the community they serve? Methodology: Autoethnography using both flashbacks and article artifacts applied to the leadership of an early 1990s African American weekly newspaper. Contribution: Since a literature gap of minority newspaper cultural competence examples is apparent, this observation can serve as a benchmark to springboard off older studies like that of Barbarin (1978) and that by examining the leadership styles and editorial authenticity as noted by The Chicago School of Media Theory (2018), these results can be used for comparison to other such minority owned publications. Findings: By bringing people together, mixing them up, and conducting business any other way than routine helped the Afro-American Gazette, Grand Rapids, proudly display a confidence sense of cultural competence. The result was a potentiating leadership style, and this style positively changed the perception of culture, a social theory change example. Recommendations for Practitioners: For the minority leaders of such publications, this example demonstrates effective use of potentiating leadership to positively change the perception of the quality of such minority owned newspapers. Recommendations for Researchers: Such an autoethnography could be used by others to help document other examples of cultural competence in other minority owned newspapers. Impact on Society: The overall impact shows that leadership at such minority owned publications can influence the community into a positive social change example. Future Research: Research in the areas of culture competence, leadership, within minority owned newspapers as well as other minority alternative publications and websites can be observed with a focus on what works right as well as examples that might show little social change model influence. The suggestion is to conduct the research while employed if possible, instead of relying on flashbacks.

Abstract:
Twenty two science Russian periodicals in informatics and library studies are selected for the bibliometrical analysis of key journal indicators, including publication activity of the same journals’ editorial staff. For the first time for domestic journals, the study reveals hidden self-citation when editorial members include links to their journal from other publications. The available instruments of scientometrical databases, including Web of Science and Scopus, and the national system Russian Science Citation Index do not enable to identify this form of self-citation. The mentioned manipulations are aimed at boosting journal rating. In several cases, intensive and unjustified citation by journals’ editorial staff in other periodicals which we consider the violation of publication ethical principles, is revealed.

Abstract:
The article provides a study of the standard aspect of vocabulary usage in Ukrainian newspaper publications. The language quality in newspaper publications is an important and topical problem. The paper puts special emphasis on the language of the media which needs to be normative. The research is predetermined by the need to establish word meanings (based on the editorial practice), which is not specifically delineated in the reference literature, and to give variants of their proper usage. It is emphasized that the accuracy of word usage depends on the availability, aesthetic impact and effectiveness of newspaper publications. The research analyses proper usage of linguistic expressions in different publications of «DEN’», «DZERKALO TYZHNYA», «EXPRESS» newspapers, particularly the usage of nouns TENSION (napruha), DIFFERENCE (riznytsia), NUMBER (chyslo). Meanings of all these words are not explicitly delineated in the reference literature. There are a lot of doubts about the proper usage of these linguistic expressions in the editorial work. Certain Recommendations regarding the correct usage of researchable forms have been suggested. The analysis of defining dictionaries, translation dictionaries, thesaurus as well as other reference books, is based on the acquired editorial experience, that enables to define the meaning of the lexems TENSION (napruha), DIFFERENCE (riznytsia), NUMBER (chyslo) under the study and to suggest correct compliant forms to the selected examples of their usage in the publications of «DEN’», «DZERKALO TYZHNYA», «EXPRESS» newspapers (over 70 sentence constructions).

Melnyk, Yuriy. Academic Journal Website Model. KRPOCH, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.26697/preprint.melnyk.1.2018.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The tens of thousands of academic journal websites that are on the Internet today often do not have a clear organizational structure for their website. If most of them are convenient enough for readers (if the journal is open access), then many have problems informing authors about the conditions, the process of submitting and reviewing the manuscript. The Editorial Offices empirically populate the journal's website with content that can change dramatically (both in terms of website design and content) as the journal develops. Aim of Study: To develop a website model for an academic journal that takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high quality scientific manuscripts. Material and Methods: The academic journal website model is based on a structural-functional approach. The website content consists of text and integrated applications. This model takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high-quality open access scientific manuscripts, as well as the indexing of journal articles by leading indexing agencies. Results: The academic journal website model is structured with the following menu and submenu elements: 1. HOME: 1.1. Journal information; 1.2. From the editorial office; 1.3. Databases, Indexing; 2. EDITORIAL BOARD: 2.1. Editorial board; 2.2. Reviewers; 2.3. Editing and reviewing process; 3. EDITORIAL POLICIES: 3.1. Editorial policies; 3.2. Plagiarism policy; 3.3. Open access policy; 3.4. The ethics codex of scientific publications; 3.5. Disclaimer; 3.6. License terms; 3.7. Terms of publications (fee); 4. ARCHIV: 4.1. Previous issues; 4.2. Current issue; 4.3. Articles online first; 5. INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS: 5.1. General recommendations; 5.2. Manuscript templates; 5.3. Supplemental materials; 6. STATISTICS: 6.1. Publications; 6.2. Authors; 6.3. Readers; 7. CONTACTS: 7.1. Contact; 7.2. Subscriptions; 7.3. Search. Conclusions: This academic journal website model was implemented for the International Journal of Science Annals (IJSA). Authors and readers of IJSA noted the advantages of the model proposed by the author, including: a convenient and understandable website interface, the availability of the necessary hyperlinks to the pages of the journal's website and external media (sites of indexed agencies, library archives, etc.), convenient search for information on the website and published in the journal articles (by author, publication, text of the article), availability of integrated applications (online submission of manuscripts, filing appeals against the decision of reviewers and complaints about published articles, viewing the interactive printed version of the journal, etc.), availability of templates (for authors, reviewers), availability of multiple formats for archiving articles (PDF, DOAJ, XML, TXT), the ability to choose the style of citing the article and the website language (English, Ukrainian), etc. Keywords: journal, model, website, academic, indexing

Tymoshyk, Mykola. UKRAINIAN CHILDREN’S MAGAZINE ON EMIGRATION AS A SPECIFIC TYPE OF PUBLICATION (ON THE MATERIALS OF THE LONDON MONTHLY “YOUNG FRIENDS”). Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11394.

Full text
Abstract:
For the first time, one of the popular children’s magazines of the Western Ukrainian Diaspora “Young Friends” became the subject of research. Founded in March 1955, it ceased to exist in 1984. There is no complete filing of this newspaper in any book collection of Ukraine, it has not been digitized yet, the editorial office did not have a site. For this reason, the author conducted a study of this journal in the library-archive of the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain (UUB) in London. The peculiarities of journal formation and the specifics of the editorial policy are clarified. The experience of publishing a Ukrainian children’s magazine abroad for a long time (in color and on chalk paper) without any financial support from the state, but only by public money, is quite instructive for the current situation in Ukraine when children’s periodicals have almost disappeared from the national information space due to indifferent contemplation of the state.
