Narlikar, A. V., ed. The Oxford Handbook of Small Superconductors. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198738169.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This handbook examines cutting-edge developments in research and applications of small or mesoscopic superconductors, offering a glimpse of what might emerge as a giga world of nano superconductors. Contributors, who are eminent frontrunners in the field, share their insights on the current status and great promise of small superconductors in the theoretical, experimental, and technological spheres. They discuss the novel and intriguing features and theoretical underpinnings of the phenomenon of mesoscopic superconductivity, the latest fabrication methods and characterization tools, and the opportunities and challenges associated with technological advances. The book is organized into three parts. Part I deals with developments in basic research of small superconductors, including local-scale spectroscopic studies of vortex organization in such materials, Andreev reflection and related studies in low-dimensional superconducting systems, and research on surface and interface superconductivity. Part II covers the materials aspects of small superconductors, including mesoscopic effects in superconductor–ferromagnet hybrids, micromagnetic measurements on electrochemically grown mesoscopic superconductors, and magnetic flux avalanches in superconducting films with mesoscopic artificial patterns. Part III reviews the current progress in the device technology of small superconductors, focusing on superconducting spintronics and devices, barriers in Josephson junctions, hybrid superconducting devices based on quantum wires, superconducting nanodevices, superconducting quantum bits of information, and the use of nanoSQUIDs in the investigation of small magnetic systems.

Keefe, Richard S. E., Avi (Abraham) Reichenberg, and Jeffrey Cummings, eds. Cognitive Enhancement in CNS Disorders and Beyond. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190214401.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book compiles a series of educational and thought-provoking chapters from the world's leading cognitive and clinical scientists to describe the latest research on cognitive impairments in a host of pathological conditions that affect CNS functioning, the available treatments for these impairments, and how new treatments are being tested. This volume advances the field toward the availability of cognitive enhancing drugs and devices that will benefit those who need them most and others who may believe that these techniques can help them to thrive. Psychological science and cognitive neuroscience have become the most popular endeavor of students worldwide, are the focus of attention of our greatest scientific accomplishments, and are the emphasis of many publications in the mainstream media. Because humans depend on cognitive abilities for survival, quality of life, and productivity, improving them has never been more important. Those with impairments in key aspects of cognition suffer dearly because they are unable to obtain and retain information, unable to make sound decisions based on the information at hand, and unable to plan future activities. The availability of pharmacological and behavioral interventions that can improve cognitive abilities and provide impaired individuals with the social, occupational, and functional quality of life that the rest of us enjoy has potential far-reaching implications. Such interventions can also benefit those who want to boost current cognitive abilities to higher levels, perhaps as a means to hone skills in providing products for others or to gain an edge on competition.

Stephens, Keri K. BYOD Challenges for New College Graduates. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190625504.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Those who are about to graduate from college are probably looking forward to getting a job, and with that comes some much-needed cutting-edge technologies. Not only do many students need new laptop computers as they graduate, but some of them decided to skip that costly accessory while in college and have done most of their work on a mobile device with a tiny screen. Just because today’s new college graduates have grown up with mobile technologies doesn’t mean that they always know how to use them productively in the workplace. Another concern is disparity because many students won’t be able to afford the tools they need to start their careers successfully. This chapter encourages people working in information technology and human resources to consider new graduates’ needs while developing future BYOD policies.

Thomas, Pradip Ninan. The Politics of Digital India. Edited by Adrian Athique, Vibodh Parthasarathi, and S. V. Srinivas. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199494620.001.0001.

Abstract:
Transforming India into a digital state has been an objective of successive governments in India. However, the digital, by its very nature, is a capricious, multi-dimensional entity. Its operationalization across multiple sectors in India has highlighted the fact that the digital compact with publics in India is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, devices such as mobile phones have enabled access and efficiencies, and on the other, they have increased the scope for surveillance capitalism and the expansion of governmentality. The digital is at the same time a resource, commodity, and process that is absolutely fundamental to most if not all productive forces across multiple sectors. As a part of the Media Dynamics in South Asia series, this volume explores the making of digital India and specifically deals with the contradictions of an imperfect democracy, internal compulsions, and external pressures that continue to play crucial roles in the shaping of the same. Mindful of the key roles played by political economy and context and based on conversations with theory and practice, it makes a case for critical understanding of the digital embrace in India.
