Abstract:
consideren (VoIP i tràfic elàstic, TCP).
WLANs provide a broadband access to Internet from a mobile terminal,
which can be a possible alternative solution to cellular networks.
However, this technology presents several limitations, as it is the
difficult coexistence between rigid traffic flows (VoIP) and elastic
traffic flows (TCP), due to the medium access protocol itself. In this
thesis a new admission control mechanism is proposed. It uses the set of
QoS mechanisms provided by the new EDCA standard. The use of the
proposed admission control mechanism improves the overall WLAN
performance, solving the different technology limitations. In order to
be able to evaluate and optimize the admission control mechanism,
several mathematical tools have been developed in order to capture the
dynamics of both, the access protocol and of the different multimedia
traffic flows that have been considered.

Abstract:
Many schemes that aim to tune the IEEE 802.11e EDCA transmission parameters have been proposed in the literature. Based on them, we notice that the knowledge of the numbers of active transmission queues of each Access Category has an important role in modeling and optimizing the network. In this dissertation, we propose a simple and standard-compliant mechanism that processes easily obtained traffic measurements into a novel Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to obtain estimates of those numbers. For validating the filter, we simulate an EDCA network that uses a dynamic throughput optimization scheme requiring knowledge of the numbers of active queues of each Access Category. We compare the performance results when the optimizer is fed with estimates of the EKF (practical setting) and when the inputs are the exact numbers of active queues (ideal setting). We find out that the filter is precise and accurate enough to match closely the ideal performance.

Abstract:

This system can provide clues on the sub-type of epilepsy that patients have, it identifies unusual manifestations that require further investigation, as well as better understands the temporal evolution of seizures, from their onset through to termination. The incorporation of quantitative methods would assist in developing and formulating a diagnosis in situations where clinical expertise is unavailable. This research provides important supplementary and unbiased data to assist with seizure localization. It is a vital complementary resource in the era of seizure-based detection through electrophysiological data.

Abstract:
Wireless communication always attracts extensive research interest, as it is a core part of modern communication technology. During my PhD study, I have focused on two research areas of wireless communication: IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis, and wireless cooperative retransmission. The first part of this thesis focuses on IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis. Since IEEE 802.11 technology is the most popular wireless access technology, IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis is always an important research area. In this area, my work includes the development of three analytical models for various aspects of IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis. First, a two-dimensional Markov chain model is proposed for analysing the performance of IEEE 802.11e EDCA (Enhanced Distributed Channel Access). With this analytical model, the saturated throughput is obtained. Compared with the existing analytical models of EDCA, the proposed model includes more correct details of EDCA, and accordingly its results are more accurate. This better accuracy is also proved by the simulation study. Second, another two-dimensional Markov chain model is proposed for analysing the coexistence performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and IEEE 802.11e EDCA wireless devices. The saturated throughput is obtained with the proposed analytical model. The simulation study verifies the proposed analytical model, and it shows that the channel access priority of DCF is similar to that of the best effort access category in EDCA in the coexistence environment. The final work in this area is a hierarchical Markov chain model for investigating the impact of data-rate switching on the performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF. With this analytical model, the saturated throughput can be obtained. The simulation study verifies the accuracy of the model and shows the impact of the data-rate switching under different network conditions. A series of threshold values for the channel condition as well as the number of stations are obtained to decide whether the data-rate switching should be active or not. The second part of this thesis focuses on wireless cooperative retransmission. In this thesis, two uncoordinated distributed wireless cooperative retransmission strategies for single-hop connection are presented. In the proposed strategies, each uncoordinated cooperative neighbour randomly decide whether it should transmit to help the frame delivery depending on some pre-calculated optimal transmission probabilities. In Strategy 1, the source only transmits once in the first slot, and only the neighbours are involved in the retransmission attempts in the subsequent slots. In Strategy 2, both the source and the neighbours participate in the retransmission attempts. Both strategies are first analysed with a simple memoryless channel model, and the results show the superior performance of Strategy 2. With the elementary results for the memoryless channel model, a more realistic two-state Markov fading channel model is used to investigate the performance of Strategy 2. The simulation study verifies the accuracy of our analysis and indicates the superior performance of Strategy 2 compared with the simple retransmission strategy and the traditional two-hop strategy.

This thesis addresses the problem of understanding human behaviour in videos in multiple problem settings including, recognition, segmentation, and prediction. Considering the complex nature of human behaviour, we propose to capture both short-term and long-term context in the given videos and propose novel multitask learning-based approaches to solve the action prediction task, as well as an adversarially-trained approach to action recognition. We demonstrate the efficacy of these techniques by applying them to multiple real-world human behaviour understanding settings including, security surveillance, sports action recognition, group activity recognition and recognition of cooking activities.

Abstract:
Virtual reality (VR) modelling is increasingly used to reconstruct lost structures in highly realistic detail. These technologies offer archaeologists the ability to objectively study reconstruction scenarios and alternative hypotheses without having to interact with extant remains. As the use of digital reconstructions increases, so does consensus that there are dangers inherent in creating highly realistic outputs that are based on limited information with an associated lack of transparency of process. This thesis presents a methodology and data classification system for the digital reconstruction process and premises that the certainty of data employed in digital reconstructions is core to reconstruction authenticity.

This master thesis includes a short review of the structure of WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) technologies 802.11a/b/g, the description of their physical interface and the description of the basic medium access control mechanisms implementing the PCF (Point Coordination Function) and DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) methods. I mainly focused on the detailed evaluation the new 802.11e standard which was designed to efficiently support real-time services in wireless environment. To provide QoS (Quality of Service) support, this standard specifies the EDCA (Ehanced Distributed Channel Access) and HCF (Hybrid Coordination Function) medium access control methods for the shared wireless environment. The next chapter of my work is devoted to the verification of the theoretical results in OPNET Modeler simulation environment. I studied in details the WLAN model available in OPNET Modeler, the effect of data-flow classification into separate categories and the configuration of several access method parameters. Next, I created my own WLAN model according to the 802.11e standard. This model contains four applications two of them with real-time requirements. The model is divided into several scenarios, each focusing on different aspects of wireless network technologies like QoS support and it´s dependency on the number of clients, mobility of wireless terminals and comparison of the 802.11a/b/g and the 802.11e technology.

Abstract:
The IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), commonly known as Wi-Fi, has emerged as a popular internet access technology and researchers are continuously working on improvement of the quality of service (QoS) in WLAN by proposing new and efficient schemes. Voice and video over Internet Protocol (VVoIP) applications are becoming very popular in Wi-Fi enabled portable/handheld devices because of recent technological advancements and lower service costs. Different from normal voice and video streaming, these applications demand symmetric throughput for the upstream and downstream. Existing Wi-Fi standards are optimised for generic internet applications and fail to provide symmetric throughput due to traffic bottleneck at access points. Performance analysis and benchmarking is an integral part of WLAN research, and in the majority of the cases, this is done through computer simulation using popular network simulators such as Network Simulator ff 2 (NS-2) or OPNET. While computer simulation is an excellent approach for saving time and money, results generated from computer simulations do not always match practical observations. This is why, for proper assessment of the merits of a proposed system in WLAN, a trial on a practical hardware platform is highly recommended and is often a requirement. In this thesis work, with a view to address the abovementioned challenges for facilitating VoIP and VVoIP services over Wi-Fi, two key contributions are made: i) formulating a suitable medium access control (MAC) protocol to address symmetric traffic scenario and ii) firmware development of this newly devised MAC protocol for real WLAN hardware. The proposed solution shows signifocant improvements over existing standards by supporting higher number of stations with strict QoS criteria. The proposed hardware platform is available off-the-shelf in the market and is a cost effective way of generating and evaluating performance results on a hardware system.

Standard economic models assume that individuals collect and process information in a way that gives them a relatively accurate perception of reality. However, data shows that individuals are often overconfident, which can have detrimental economic consequences. This thesis aims to show that individuals benefits from being overconfident in strategic interactions, which would explain the persistence of this bias despite its social cost. This thesis contributes to the literature by enhancing our understanding of the situational determinants of overconfidence in social interactions and lay the foundations to improve policies intended to prevent or limit its negative effects.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines perceptions of nonprofit accountability in philanthropic organisations in Australia, specifically Public Ancillary Funds (PubAFs). PubAFs are charitable trusts that make grants and fundraise from the public. Commonly known types include community and corporate foundations, and flow-through funds for individual charities e.g. hospitals or schools. While PubAFs share a legal form and specific regulatory guidelines, they are very diverse with large variations in donors and beneficiaries. To date accountability of PubAFs has been largely assumed rather than systematically explored. This study strengthens understandings of to whom, for what, how and why PubAFs exercise accountability. Data from three sources (online databases, managers and trustees of PubAFs, and PubAF websites) was analysed. Existing theory on nonprofit accountability is extended and refined through the development of a typology, incorporating relationships and forms of accountability in PubAFs.

Abstract:
This thesis suggests the use of a deterministic backoff after successful transmissions in the MAC protocol of WLANs. Since those stations that successfully transmitted in their last collision attempt cannot collide among them in their next transmission attempt, the number of collisions is reduced. Hence, the protocol is called Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Enhanced Collision Avoidance. The protocol is modelled and simulations are used to assess its performance in a variety of scenarios. It is concluded that the proposed protocol performs always equal or better than the legacy one.

This study focuses on designing user-driven applications to provide an engaging experience around personal finances for rural Sri Lankan communities. It employs two diverse design cases to explore how to design for personal finances through an experience focused HCI perspective. The first case involved working around the practices related to microfinance while the second case explored aspects pertaining to financial literacy. The findings suggest that since current practices of these communities are strongly attuned with their everyday lives and those practices shape the use of technology, the designs should fit meaningfully with the local traditions to guarantee sustained use.

Abstract:
Community radio in Australia was established to empower ordinary citizens. However, people with disability are less heard than others in community radio, as with mainstream media. Listening to experiences of community radio staff and volunteers with disability can provide the foundation for plans to increase participation, agency and voice. Using semi-structured interviews, this practice-led research asked people with disability in the sector what empowers them, and how policy change, training and awareness-raising might increase their participation. It's The People's Radio, an accompanying 4 part radio documentary, tells the stories of community radio participants with disability in their own voices.

Abstract:
The transport of ionic species through nanopores is important in determining the underlying behaviour of electrolytes on the nanoscale; the understanding of which has important applications in the development of bio-molecular sensors and nanofluidic diodes. Importantly, this thesis has developed a novel mathematical model of ionic transport through a nanopore that can be quantitatively compared to experimental results. In doing so, we have been able to further understand the mechanisms behind ionic transport and explain previously unexplained experimental results.

A simple approach for extracting the superconducting gap of materials from trendline fittings of key sections of their Electronic Band Structures (EBS), calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT), is presented. The proposed approach works well for very different compositions, structure types and superconducting transition temperatures, indicating that it is robust, reliable and versatile. This approach provides many advantages in terms of required computational time and power, compared with similar information extracted from phonon dispersion calculations, making it accessible to wider DFT-computational chemistry and physics communities. The approach also identifies requirements for superconductivity and indirectly contributes towards understanding of superconductivity mechanisms.

Full text
Abstract:
Increasing number of ageing population and people who need continuous health monitoring and rising the costs of health care have triggered the concept of the novel wireless technology-driven human body monitoring. Human body monitoring can be performed using a network of small and intelligent wireless medical sensors which may be attached to the body surface or implanted into the tissues. It enables carers to predict, diagnose, and react to adverse events earlier than ever. The concept of Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) was introduced to fully exploit the benefits of wireless technologies in telemedicine and m-health. The main focus of this research is the design and performance evaluation of strategies and architectures that would allow seamless and efficient interconnection of patient’s body area network and the stationary (e.g., hospital room or ward) wireless networks. I first introduce the architecture of a healthcare system which bridges WBANs and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). I adopt IEEE 802.15.6 standard for the patient’s body network because it is specifically designed for WBANs. Since IEEE 802.15.6 has strict Quality of Service (QoS) and priorities to transfer the medical data to the medical server a QoS-enabled WLAN for the next hop is needed to preserve the end-to-end QoS. IEEE 802.11e standard is selected for the WLAN in the hospital room or ward because it provides prioritization for the stations in the network. I investigate in detail the requirements posed by different healthcare parameters and to analyze the performance of various alternative interconnection strategies, using the rigorous mathematical apparatus of Queuing Theory and Probabilistic Analysis; these results are independently validated through discrete event simulation models. This thesis has three main parts; performance evaluation and MAC parameters settings of IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA), performance evaluation and tuning the MAC parameters of IEEE 802.15.6, and designing a seamless and efficient interconnection strategy which bridges IEEE 802.11e EDCA and IEEE 802.15.6 standards for a healthcare system.

This research contends that possession of land as a legal concept is changing because of its applications within adjudicative settings. However, the full scope of that change is difficult to discern as a logical chain of reasoning has not emerged which adequately explains possession's applications in certain contexts. The study considers this is because possession's traditional characteristics rely on a conceptual linkage to land itself and, in modern real property law, to ownership. When detached from an ownership frame of reference, possession, if it continues to be extended, may need to conceptually develop as also representing different characteristics.

Hu, Jia. "Analysis and improvement of medium access control protocols in wireless networks : performance modelling and Quality-of-Service enhancement of IEEE 802.11e MAC in wireless local area networks under heterogeneous multimedia traffic." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/4466.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to efficiently utilize the scarce wireless resource as well as keep up with the ever-increasing demand for Quality-of-Service (QoS) of multimedia applications, wireless networks are undergoing rapid development and dramatic changes in the underlying technologies and protocols. The Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, which coordinates the channel access and data transmission of wireless stations, plays a pivotal role in wireless networks. Performance modelling and analysis has been and continues to be of great theoretical and practical importance in the design and development of wireless networks. This research is devoted to developing efficient and cost-effective analytical tools for the performance analysis and enhancement of MAC protocols in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) under heterogeneous multimedia traffic. To support the MAC-layer QoS in WLANs, the IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) protocol has proposed three QoS differentiation schemes in terms of Arbitrary Inter-Frame Space (AIFS), Contention Window (CW), and Transmission Opportunity (TXOP). This research starts with the development of new analytical models for the TXOP scheme specified in the EDCA protocol under Poisson traffic. A dynamic TXOP scheme is then proposed to adjust the TXOP limits according to the status of the transmission queue. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiments show that the proposed dynamic scheme largely improves the performance of TXOP. To evaluate the TXOP scheme in the presence of ii heterogeneous traffic, a versatile analytical model is developed to capture the traffic heterogeneity and model the features of burst transmission. The performance results highlight the importance of taking into account the heterogeneous traffic for the accurate evaluation of the TXOP scheme in wireless multimedia networks. To obtain a thorough and deep understanding of the performance attributes of the EDCA protocol, a comprehensive analytical model is then proposed to accommodate the integration of the three QoS schemes of EDCA in terms of AIFS, CW, and TXOP under Poisson traffic. The performance results show that the TXOP scheme can not only support service differentiation but also improve the network performance, whereas the AIFS and CW schemes provide QoS differentiation only. Moreover, the results demonstrate that the MAC buffer size has considerable impact on the QoS performance of EDCA under Poisson traffic. To investigate the performance of EDCA in wireless multimedia networks, an analytical model is further developed for EDCA under heterogeneous traffic. The performance results demonstrate the significant effects of heterogeneous traffic on the total delay and frame losses of EDCA with different buffer sizes. Finally, an efficient admission control scheme is presented for the IEEE 802.11e WLANs based on analytical modelling and a game-theoretical approach. The admission control scheme can maintain the system operation at an optimal point where the utility of the Access Point (AP) is maximized with the QoS constraints of various users.

In today's educational context of Brazil the theme of integral education has deserved having to induce policy, nowadays, the More Education Program. In this sense, this thesis focuses on the aspects of integral education that emerged in the country's history to reach the More Education Program (MEP) and offers some thoughts on how physical education is presented within the institutionalization of intent of Integral Education in Brazil. Thus we have as main objective to discuss the pedagogical setting of Second Half Program (PST) in the MEP, and to identify possibilities to integrate their actions with the School Physical Education. In the case study methodology was adopted, with the appropriate schools accompanied by Team Collaborator 3 of the Ministry of Sport, using as a source of evidence the first assessment protocol carried out by the Cooperating Teams of Educational Monitoring and Administration of the Second Time in Brazil specifically evaluations carried out by Team Collaborator 3 (EC3), under the Department of Physical Education, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, which followed the covenants of the More xi Education Program in the municipalities of Bayeux / PB, Araruna / PB, Natal / RN and Parnamirim / RN, in the year 2012. in our case it is noticed that the activities developed by PST, accompanied in schools, have an organization and pedagogical practices that converge with each other, but are configured with disjointed practices of Education classes physical, aspect that differs in what would be thinking pedagogical actions to comprehensive education schools.

This study investigates the implications between the musical theory and pedagogical practice based on a study that questions the reasons why some students feel incapable of learning the music language, as well as, if the musical codes are truly so difficult to be apprehended by them. To answer these questions takes itself as reference, the classes I have minister while teaching the disciplines: Music Workshop and Music Language I in the Art Department, Scenic Art Course at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. I have searched the knowledge that constitutes the teacher formation based on the union between the pedagogical efficiency and sensibility, searching in the Corporality the theoretical port for my investigation. This way, advocating is a methodological principle for musical education originated from the experience of knowledge: creating, playing, feeling, thinking, and the interaction among them, conducting the students not only to music learning, but to a process of human formation. It adopts itself as methodological resource, amongst the qualitative methods, some of the techniques that are associated with the ethnographic research, for having as its main objective, to study the meaning of the actions and events of the investigated group. The analysis of the data leads to the conclusion that when the teacher displays his or her pedagogical knowledge in an environment constructed with affectivity, in a playful and pleasant form, the assimilation and construction of the musical concepts happen naturally and efficiently, surpassing the taboo that music learning is only possible to the especially well endowed people for music. Very aware that the scientific debate is important for the strengthening of formative programs involved in the growth and consolidation of the musical teaching and learning area, it is expected to promote this research discussions and reflections in the general educational field with this research, as well as, to contribute significantly to the specific growth of musical education

This study investigates how an Early Childhood Education School deals with the issue of diversity in the perspective of Inclusive Education. To do that, the interventions of educators with all children, with and without disabilities, are characterized, considering their specificities and characteristics. It also analyzes how the interactions among children take place, considering their specificities and characteristics, and also examines how (if so) the presence of children with disabilities helps to make the environment more helpful to development, participation and the learning of all children. An exploratory qualitative study was carried out, with participant observation being the main tool for data collection. Two classes of a municipal kindergarten in Porto Alegre were visited during the first semester of 2017.The data from the observations were recorded in a Field Journal, which was analyzed from the Discursive Textual Analysis. Many interventions revealed a connection between educators and children, favoring peer interaction, choice of play, feeling of belonging, communication and participation in group tasks, and revealing attention to individual and group needs. On the other hand, sometimes, adults were unable to connect to the needs of children, either by losing rich opportunities for intervention or by doing so in an inconsistent manner, thus not seeming to offer the help they needed for the activities or for interactions among the group. On the interactions among the children, four different forms were observed: through play, imitation, cooperation and aggression. Thus, the context observed was favorable to learning and interactions among all, so that deficiencies or other difficulties were taken from a heterogeneity perspective, among children, educators and management. However, some points still need to be improved, considering Early Childhood Education is still under construction in our country, gaps in teacher?s education, and internal and external divergences of the institution. Therefore, concretizations, difficulties and contradictions characterize the action of the school and the relationships and interactions observed for this study.
