Abstract:
In this paper, we focus on IEEE 802.11e enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) protocol, which can provide QoS guarantee for multimedia applications in mobile ad hoc networks. First, we briefly explain the concept of EDCA protocol. Then we implement EDCA protocol in GloMoSim via configuring special contention parameters for multimedia applications and introducing a virtual collision disposal mechanism in the MAC layer. In the end, we provide performance analysis for EDCA protocol through plentiful simulations. The simulation results show an excellent performance of the EDCA protocol we proposed.

Abstract:
In IEEE 1609, it uses IEEE 802.11 Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) mechanism to access the channel. IEEE 802.11 EDCA is a new wireless technology for wireless access in the vehicular environment (WAVE). It defines a new supplement to the existing IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. In IEEE 802.11 EDCA, the aim is providing a QoS support. While the system serves different access categories (ACs), EDCA does not perform well under high load conditions. In order to improve the efficiency, we pay attention to the EDCA with transmit opportunity (TXOP) mechanism. We first proposed a Markov chain model and studied the behavior. We extend the model to support IEEE 802.11 EDCA and presented a more accurate analysis under nonideal channel environment. We also compared it with that without TXOP mechanism under channel error environment.

Abstract:
The development of wireless technology continues to improve quality and increase the speed of data transfer into one important factor that is considered. Each year, wireless technology users continue to increase and communication service needs also experience tremendous traffic surge. The impact of high traffic intensity of data sent can lead to increased data queue and transient transmission network. The problem of network crunch resulting from a high amount of queue data may affect service performance. To get the solution, in this study was tested using Hierarchy Token Bucket (HTB) and Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) on 802.11n wireless network. Queuing tests are performed on four types of traffic: voice, video, best effort (BE) and background (BG). Assessment of QoS of HTB and EDCA is based on throughput and delay parameters. The results obtained from throughput testing of the mean value of each data packet, the results show that the EDCA method is better than HTB method. The best throughput results are given on Best Effort(BE) traffic. While on the delay test by using HTB and EDCA method, obtained the average of EDCA delay smaller in multimedia data packet for Video and Voice. In conclusion, the results show that the EDCA method is better than HTB.

Abstract:
With the increasing demand of wireless local area networks, the support of differentiated Quality of Service (QoS) has become one of the critical issues on IEEE 802.11 medium access control protocols. To support the differentiated QoS requirements, IEEE 802.11e has been standardized. IEEE 802.11e defines Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) for access mechanism, which is a contention based channel access method and delivers traffic based on differentiated access categories for the support of QoS. This paper introduces a three dimensional Markov chain model to evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.11e EDCA mechanism with an arbitrary number of different access categories. The proposed analytical model captures the major QoS specific features in the IEEE 802.11e EDCA and hence can provide a numerical approach to pick the set of EDCA parameter values to meet the QoS requirements of each access category. The results of our proposed analytical model are verified using simulations.

Abstract:
The IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) is designed to provide differentiated services without real hard performance guarantees, such as bandwidth and delay bounds in wireless LANs. In this paper we design a measurement-assisted, model-based call admission control (MM-CAC) scheme to support guaranteed QoS in the EDCA. For this purpose, we first develop an accurate analytical model of the legacy IEEE 802.11 DCF under non-saturation conditions; then using this model, we define the concept of equivalent number of competing entities, to convert a heterogeneous (multi-class) EDCA network into an equivalent homogeneous network and study traffic classes in isolation. Our analytical model is then invoked to decide to admit a new flow or reject it with much little computational complexity as compared to a fully fledged EDCA model. Numerical results validate our model and analysis, and simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of our MM-CAC scheme.

Abstract:
With the development of 5G, the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) evolves to be one important component of the Internet of Things (IoT), where vehicles and public infrastructure communicate with each other through a IEEE 802.11p EDCA mechanism to support four access categories (ACs) to access a channel. Due to the mobility of the vehicles, the network topology is time varying and thus incurs a dynamic network performance. There are many works on the stationary performance of 802.11p EDCA and some on real-time performance, but existing work does not consider real-time performance under extreme highway scenario. In this paper, we consider four ACs defined in the 802.11p EDCA mechanism to evaluate the limit of the real-time network performance in an extreme highway scenario, i.e., all vehicles keep the minimum safety distance between each other. The performance of the model has been demonstrated through simulations. It is found that some ACs can meet real-time requirements while others cannot in the extreme scenario.

Abstract:
Wireless ad hoc network is a self-configurable and dynamically distributed network in which stations can move freely. In the ad hoc network, some flows have difficulty in accessing the channel due to contention at both the medium-access control (MAC) and link layers. The IEEE 802.11 protocol is currently the de facto standard for wireless networks. It uses enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) method to access the transmission environment of each type of data flow. The size of the contention window (CW) in EDCA is related to the probability of accessing the channel of each flow. In our approach, useful information is obtained from the physical, MAC, and link layers. A fuzzy logic system is then used to adjust the size of CW to rely on such value, thereby improving the fairness index of data flows (voice, video, best effort) in IEEE 802.11 EDCA. The simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the throughput and fairness index of data flows.

Abstract:
Abstract The increasing use of multimedia applications in wireless ad-hoc networks makes the support of quality of service (QoS) an overriding necessity. In this article, we present a new extension of the IEEE 802.11e EDCA scheme called NCA-EDCA, which uses the lifetime and the number of retransmissions attempts of a packet to assess the aggressiveness of the environment in order to adjust the channel access parameters to work in the best possible way and improve service quality accordingly. This new extension aims to (1) improve the performance of real-time applications; (2) increase the overall throughput by reducing the collision rate and (3) achieve an acceptable level of fairness. The simulation results show that our extension significantly improves EDCA for better QoS support of multimedia applications. More specifically, it increases throughput of the different flows by no negligible factors and significantly reduces the collision rate while maintaining a high degree of fairness between flows of equal priority.

WLANs provide a broadband access to Internet from a mobile terminal,
which can be a possible alternative solution to cellular networks.
However, this technology presents several limitations, as it is the
difficult coexistence between rigid traffic flows (VoIP) and elastic
traffic flows (TCP), due to the medium access protocol itself. In this
thesis a new admission control mechanism is proposed. It uses the set of
QoS mechanisms provided by the new EDCA standard. The use of the
proposed admission control mechanism improves the overall WLAN
performance, solving the different technology limitations. In order to

several mathematical tools have been developed in order to capture the

Many schemes that aim to tune the IEEE 802.11e EDCA transmission parameters have been proposed in the literature. Based on them, we notice that the knowledge of the numbers of active transmission queues of each Access Category has an important role in modeling and optimizing the network. In this dissertation, we propose a simple and standard-compliant mechanism that processes easily obtained traffic measurements into a novel Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to obtain estimates of those numbers. For validating the filter, we simulate an EDCA network that uses a dynamic throughput optimization scheme requiring knowledge of the numbers of active queues of each Access Category. We compare the performance results when the optimizer is fed with estimates of the EKF (practical setting) and when the inputs are the exact numbers of active queues (ideal setting). We find out that the filter is precise and accurate enough to match closely the ideal performance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Wireless communication always attracts extensive research interest, as it is a core part of modern communication technology. During my PhD study, I have focused on two research areas of wireless communication: IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis, and wireless cooperative retransmission. The first part of this thesis focuses on IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis. Since IEEE 802.11 technology is the most popular wireless access technology, IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis is always an important research area. In this area, my work includes the development of three analytical models for various aspects of IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis. First, a two-dimensional Markov chain model is proposed for analysing the performance of IEEE 802.11e EDCA (Enhanced Distributed Channel Access). With this analytical model, the saturated throughput is obtained. Compared with the existing analytical models of EDCA, the proposed model includes more correct details of EDCA, and accordingly its results are more accurate. This better accuracy is also proved by the simulation study. Second, another two-dimensional Markov chain model is proposed for analysing the coexistence performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and IEEE 802.11e EDCA wireless devices. The saturated throughput is obtained with the proposed analytical model. The simulation study verifies the proposed analytical model, and it shows that the channel access priority of DCF is similar to that of the best effort access category in EDCA in the coexistence environment. The final work in this area is a hierarchical Markov chain model for investigating the impact of data-rate switching on the performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF. With this analytical model, the saturated throughput can be obtained. The simulation study verifies the accuracy of the model and shows the impact of the data-rate switching under different network conditions. A series of threshold values for the channel condition as well as the number of stations are obtained to decide whether the data-rate switching should be active or not. The second part of this thesis focuses on wireless cooperative retransmission. In this thesis, two uncoordinated distributed wireless cooperative retransmission strategies for single-hop connection are presented. In the proposed strategies, each uncoordinated cooperative neighbour randomly decide whether it should transmit to help the frame delivery depending on some pre-calculated optimal transmission probabilities. In Strategy 1, the source only transmits once in the first slot, and only the neighbours are involved in the retransmission attempts in the subsequent slots. In Strategy 2, both the source and the neighbours participate in the retransmission attempts. Both strategies are first analysed with a simple memoryless channel model, and the results show the superior performance of Strategy 2. With the elementary results for the memoryless channel model, a more realistic two-state Markov fading channel model is used to investigate the performance of Strategy 2. The simulation study verifies the accuracy of our analysis and indicates the superior performance of Strategy 2 compared with the simple retransmission strategy and the traditional two-hop strategy.

Abstract:
Aquatic environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys are sometimes impacted by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) inhibitors. We tested varying concentrations of different inhibitors (humic, phytic, and tannic acids; crude leaf extracts) for impacts on quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays designed for eDNA surveys of bighead and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). We also tested for inhibition by high concentrations of exogenous DNA, hypothesizing that DNA from increasingly closely related species would be increasingly inhibitory. All tested inhibitors impacted qPCR, though only at very high concentrations — likely a function, in part, of having used an inhibitor-resistant qPCR solution. Closer phylogenetic relatedness resulted in inhibition at lower exogenous DNA concentrations, but not at relatively close phylogenetic scales. Inhibition was also influenced by the qPCR reporter dye used. Importantly, different qPCR assays responded differently to the same inhibitor concentrations. Implications of these results are that the inclusion of more than one assay for the same target taxa in an eDNA survey may be an important countermeasure against false negatives and that internal positive controls may not, in the absence of efforts to maximize inhibition compatibility, provide useful information about the inhibition of an eDNA assay.
