Abstract:
In the aftermath of the 2010 Citizens United decision, it's become commonplace to note the growing political dominance of a small segment of the economic elite. But what exactly are those members of the elite doing with their newfound influence? This book presents an account of legislation promoted by the US's biggest corporate lobbies across all fifty state legislatures and encompassing a wide range of labor and economic policies. In an era of growing economic insecurity, it turns out that one of the main reasons life is becoming harder for American workers is a relentless—and concerted—offensive by the country's best-funded and most powerful political forces: corporate lobbies empowered by the Supreme Court to influence legislative outcomes with an endless supply of cash. These actors have successfully championed hundreds of new laws that lower wages, eliminate paid sick leave, undo the right to sue over job discrimination, and cut essential public services. The book shows how corporate strategies have been shaped by twenty-first-century conditions—including globalization, economic decline, and the populism reflected in both the Trump and Sanders campaigns of 2016. Perhaps most important, the book shows that the corporate legislative agenda has come to endanger the scope of democracy itself.

Effros, Bonnie, and Isabel Moreira, eds. The Oxford Handbook of the Merovingian World. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190234188.001.0001.

Abstract:
The Merovingian era is one of the best studied yet least known periods of European history. From the fifth to the eighth centuries, the inhabitants of Gaul (what now comprises France, southern Belgium, Luxembourg, Rhineland Germany and part of modern Switzerland), a mix of Gallo-Romans and Germanic arrivals under the political control of the Merovingian dynasty, sought to preserve, use, and reimagine the political, cultural, and religious power of ancient Rome while simultaneously forging the beginnings of what would become medieval European culture and identity. As a result, the Merovingian era is at the heart of historical debates about what happened to western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. Yet in these centuries, the inhabitants of the Merovingian kingdoms created a culture that was the product of these traditions and achieved a balance between the world they inherited and the imaginative solutions that they bequeathed to Europe. Situated at the crossroads of Europe, connecting northern Europe with the Mediterranean and the British Isles with the Byzantine empire, Merovingian Gaul also benefitted from the global reach of the late Roman Empire. In this collection of 46 essays by scholars of Merovingian history, archaeology, and art history, we encounter the new perspectives and scientific approaches that shape our changing view of this extraordinary era.

Abstract:
Sondheim provided original music for five movies: one or more songs forThe Seven-Per-Cent Solution(1976),Dick Tracy(1990), andThe Birdcage(1996), and scores forStavisky(1974) andReds(1981). The two scores reflect divergent trends in this era. Warren Beatty’sRedsuses music sparingly, and Alain Resnais’sStaviskycontains a complicated score that reflects compositional trends of the 1930s. Sondheim’s songs for the other films are crafted to entertain and to further their respective stories. ForDick Tracy, Sondheim composed five songs; several accompany montages, others crosscut with live action, and two, both performed by Madonna, have multiple reprises. Among the latter is the Oscar-winning “Sooner or Later.”

Tucker, Joshua. Peruvian Cumbia at the Theoretical Limits of Techno-Utopian Hybridity. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190842741.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay analyzes the transformation of Peruvian chicha, an adaptation of Colombian cumbia, from an unassuming working-class music into a central feature in new nationalist discourses that seek to overcome older elitist and racist models of national identification from transnational perspectives. As part of this discussion, the chapter considers the work of intellectual cosmopolitans who appeal to notions of electronic experimentation, psychedelic playfulness, and musical agency, thus resignifying chicha as an aesthetic solution for the intellectual shortcomings of an earlier era. Chicha musicians become retrospective theorists of international hybridity and nationalist mestizaje whose experimentalism challenges the limits of previous identity discourses, providing aesthetic utopian alternatives.

Abstract:
This conclusion reflects on Fannie Barrier Williams' accomplishments as she returned to her roots in Brockport to spend the remaining years of her life. The burden of trying to inhabit “two places at once” had become too difficult and forced Barrier Williams to leave Chicago and head home with her sister Ella. The sisters found Brockport to be the “pleasant and peaceful” place that it had always been. The bond between Barrier Williams and Ella Barrier greatly contributed to the pleasure of returning home. Barrier Williams died on March 4, 1944, at the age of eighty-nine. She left a legacy of reforms that she helped institute beginning in the Progressive Era. Instead of succumbing to the evils of Jim Crow, she challenged white racism and sought solutions for the black community using her pen, her oratory, and her own class ideals.

Mikail, Ibrahim Kawuley. Corruption and Nigerian political economy. UUM Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.32890/9789670876511.

Full text
Abstract:
The book analyses the background of corrupt practices in the annals of Nigerian political history from pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial era down to the fourth democratic dispensation. The book also establishes a nexus between corruption and political economy in the Nigerian political theatre. Indeed, corruption undermines the rules of law, equity, transparency democratization and national development which breed poverty, insecurity and general underdevelopment among the populace.Meanwhile, the political economy approach and the theories of corruption and their application on Nigerian political economy is highlighted. The role of policy-makers and stakeholders with their policies and programmes on combating corruption is also analysed. Furthermore, the giant efforts of international organizations, civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on combating the menace of corruption are also pointed out. The book serves as a guide to researchers on the subject matter and the freedom fighters with their anti-corruption crusade or mandates so as to proffer solutions to corrupt practices and scandals in Nigeria and beyond.

Francesca P, Albanese, and Takkenberg Lex. Palestinian Refugees in International Law. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198784043.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Palestinian refugee question, resulting from the events surrounding the creation of the state of Israel seventy years ago, remains one of the largest and most protracted refugee crises of the post-Second World War era. Numbering over six million in the Middle East alone, Palestinian refugees’ status and treatment varies considerably according to the state or territory ‘hosting’ them, the UN agency assisting them, and political circumstances surrounding the Israeli–Palestinian conflict these refugees are naturally associated with. Despite being foundational to both the experience of the Palestinian refugees and the resolution of their plight, international law has not been a decisive factor in discussions concerning their fate. This compelling new edition offers a clear and comprehensive analysis of various areas of international law (including refugee law, human rights law, humanitarian law, the law relating to stateless persons, principles related to internally displaced persons, as well as notions of international criminal law), and probes the relevance of their interplay to the provision of international protection for Palestinian refugees and their quest for durable solutions.

Barnard, Catherine. Brexit and the EU Internal Market. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198811763.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter considers Brexit and the EU internal market. Barnard emphasizes the role that the UK played in creating the EU internal market and examines the view that its four freedoms—free movement of goods, services, capital, and people—are indivisible. The decision of the UK to leave the EU has paradoxically contributed to entrench the view that the four freedoms are indivisible. This reduces the possibility for the UK to maintain access to the EU single market after Brexit—a fact acknowledged even by the UK government. However, the EEA model might be the best solution for the UK post-Brexit, reflecting UK citizens’ demands, and also in the interest of the EU. Nevertheless, the withdrawal of the UK may strengthen protectionist trends within the EU. Moreover, Barnard emphasizes that Brexit poses challenges for the UK internal market, which the Great Repeal Bill will need to address.

Abstract:
This book examines how Martin Luther King's life and work had a profound, if unpredictable, impact on the course of the United States since the civil rights era. A global icon of freedom, justice, and equality, King is recognized worldwide as a beacon in the struggles of peoples seeking to eradicate oppression, entrenched poverty, social deprivation, as well as political and economic disfranchisement. While Dr. King's work and ideas have gained broad traction, some powerful people misappropriate the symbol of King, skewing his legacy. With unique, multidisciplinary works by scholars from around the country, this anthology focuses on contemporary social policies and issues in America. Collectively, these pieces explore wide-ranging issues and contemporary social developments through the lens of Dr. King's perceptions, analysis, and prescriptions. Essayists bring a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to social policies and current issues in light of his ideals. They strive to glean new approaches and solutions that comport with Dr. King's vision. Organized into three sections, the book focuses on selected issues in contemporary domestic politics and policy, foreign policy and foreign affairs, and social developments that impinge upon African Americans and Americans in general. Essays shed light on Dr. King's perspective related to crime and justice, the right to vote, the hip hop movement, American foreign policy in the Middle East and Africa, healthcare, and other pressing issues. This book infers what Dr. King's response and actions might be on important and problematic contemporary policy and social issues that have arisen in the post-civil rights era.

Degani, Michael. The City Electric. Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478023777.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last twenty years of neoliberal reform, the power supply in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s metropolis, has become less reliable even as its importance has increased. Though mobile phones, televisions, and refrigerators have flooded the city, the electricity required to run these devices is still supplied by the socialist-era energy company Tanesco, which is characterized by increased fees, aging infrastructure, and a sluggish bureaucracy. While some residents contemplate off-grid solutions, others repair, extend, or tap into the state network with the assistance of freelance electricians or moonlighting utility employees. In The City Electric Michael Degani explores how electricity and its piracy has become a key site for urban Tanzanians to enact, experience, and debate their social contract with the state. Moving from the politics of generation contracts down to the street-level experience of blackouts and disconnection patrols, he reveals the logics of infrastructural modification and their effects on everyday life. As politicians, residents, electricians, and utility inspectors all redistribute flows of payment and power, they reframe the energy grid both as a technical system and as an ongoing experiment in collective interdependence.

Abstract:
Global warming and climate change coincide in their main causes, the massive emission of greenhouse gases, which retain heat in the atmosphere and on the earth's surface through the so-called greenhouse effect. The generation of electricity by means of fossil fuels is an important emitter of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O), and halogenated compounds containing F, Cl, and Br. With the purpose of contributing to the construction of viable solutions to the current energy situation of the country and in the foundation of a sustainable future, the use of solar energy for the generation of electricity by means of solar panels represents an option. The purpose of this study is to describe and control the solar cell protection material Ethylene-Vinyl-Acetate (EVA), as a contribution to the Quality Assurance of solar panels, since the function of this material is essential for the protection of solar cells, which are a vital part of the solar panel. The tests performed were: Gel content, adhesion test, and durability tests. The results obtained were within specification according to IEC 61215. From this work it is concluded that it is important to continue testing the whole process and components of the solar panels in order to guarantee the useful life of the finished product, as well as to contribute to sustainable development.

Abstract:
The application of design thinking is critical in the formation of societal values by applying Ideas in right directions. Achieving a higher standard of living as well as an improvement in the overall quality of one's existence are essential. Through the course of the year, designers are always developing new ways to incorporate valuable traditions into new designs, transforming them into something altogether new and improved while also remaining stylish in the process. It is likely that existing design concepts and approaches will need to be adapted for use in the new design era, but this is not certain. We must also demonstrate to the world that Indian design is outstanding and that it should be saved for the extraordinary as well as the fashionable. By conducting logical and critical examinations of design domains, as well as by deploying appropriate solutions in a variety of settings, a broad range of design domains has been covered. Numerous projects have included noble and emerging concepts because of the large number of bright young minds who have embarked on this adventure with us. Finally, I hope that these activities and insights will help the development of a culture that encourages creative minds and communities to contribute to design thinking for the benefit of individuals, societies and humanity at large.

Abstract:
The unprecedented housing and homelessness crisis in Ireland is having profound impacts on Generation Rent, the wellbeing of children, worsening wider inequality and threatening the economy. Housing Shock contextualises the Irish housing crisis within the broader global housing situation by examining the origins of the crisis in terms of austerity, marketisation and the new era of financialisation, where global investors are making housing unaffordable and turning homes into assets for the wealthy. The COVID-19 pandemic has also shown the central importance of secure, affordable, decent standard homes and housing and this book details the structural problems and inequalities that COVID has exposed. It also brings to the fore the perspectives of those most affected by the crisis, new housing activists and protesters whilst providing innovative global solutions for a new vision for affordable, sustainable homes for all including “a green new deal for housing that provides affordable sustainable homes and communities for all”, a new form of public housing and putting the right to adequate, affordable, secure housing in the constitution and law. And it points to hopeful aspects in the new civil society housing protest movements in Ireland. It also details the contribution that academics and policy makers can make in social change in housing. This book shows how housing is fundamental to our wellbeing and a housing system that ensures everyone has an affordable secure home is beneficial for all and that achieving this is a political and societal choice.

Abstract:
This chapter describes Stoki's All-American Youth Orchestra. As the war began to overtake Europe in 1939, and German and Italian influence threatened to take hold in South America, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and performers from La Scala made tours through South America, winning friends for their respective countries. Alarmed, the Roosevelt administration wanted to counter those successes by sending U.S. cultural emissaries to Latin America. However, little government money was available to finance such projects. Stokowski stepped up to offer one solution to the dilemma. What better way to challenge the cultural impact that the Berlin Philharmonic and La Scala made on South America and counter the propaganda then circulating about the Hitler Youth Movement than by forming an orchestra of fresh-faced and highly talented young Americans as goodwill emissaries? To do this, he proposed to form an orchestra of young people from all over the United States. It would forge cultural ties with South Americans through the universal language of music and the charm of youth. Stoki also chose thirteen players from the Philadelphia Orchestra and set them strategically within his new ensemble to provide a backbone of expertise for the final product so that it could be brought together quickly. One of them was harpist Edna Phillips.

Schmidt, Dieter, and Simon Shorvon. The End of Epilepsy? Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198725909.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Epilepsy is a common disease of the brain, occurring in roughly 1% of all people, and although repeated epileptic seizures are its clinical hallmark, epilepsy is not just a medical phenomenon, but a social construct, with cultural, political, and financial consequences. People with epilepsy are exposed to stigma and burdened with disadvantages which can be far reaching. There are indeed many remedies, but no cure. This book provides a biography of modern epilepsy in the form of a brief and selective narrative of some of the important developments in medical and social epilepsy research, with its many ups and downs, over the period since 1860. Its anatomy of modern epilepsy in eight chapters is, inevitably in this short book, selective, and intentionally provocative. The book’s main objective is to provide both a survey of the evolution of epilepsy and its treatment in the post-Jacksonian era, and also a critical look at where we are today and how we got there. This book tries to make an effort to separate the wheat from the chaff in the development of better epilepsy care. Good and bad events and concepts of historic consequence are discussed. It is acknowledged that, although the end of epilepsy is in reach of some, there is at present no prescribed scientific path to the end of epilepsy for others. Regardless of the severity of epilepsy, patients, with the support of their physicians and modern medicine, must create their own solutions to the multiple issues they face.

Verdegem, Pieter, ed. AI for Everyone? Critical Perspectives. University of Westminster Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.16997/book55.

Full text
Abstract:
We are entering a new era of technological determinism and solutionism in which governments and business actors are seeking data-driven change, assuming that Artificial Intelligence is now inevitable and ubiquitous. But we have not even started asking the right questions, let alone developed an understanding of the consequences. Urgently needed is debate that asks and answers fundamental questions about power. This book brings together critical interrogations of what constitutes AI, its impact and its inequalities in order to offer an analysis of what it means for AI to deliver benefits for everyone. The book is structured in three parts: Part 1, AI: Humans vs. Machines, presents critical perspectives on human-machine dualism. Part 2, Discourses and Myths About AI, excavates metaphors and policies to ask normative questions about what is ‘desirable’ AI and what conditions make this possible. Part 3, AI Power and Inequalities, discusses how the implementation of AI creates important challenges that urgently need to be addressed. Bringing together scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and regional contexts, this book offers a vital intervention on one of the most hyped concepts of our times.
