Abstract:
Ectodysplasin A (Eda) signaling activates NF-κB during skin appendage formation, but how Eda controls specific gene transcription remains unclear. Here, we find that Eda triggers the formation of an NF-κB–associated SWI/SNF (BAF) complex in which p50/RelB recruits a linker protein, Tfg, that interacts with BAF45d in the BAF complex. We further reveal that Tfg is initially induced by Eda-mediated RelB activation and then bridges RelB and BAF for subsequent gene regulation. The BAF component BAF250a is particularly up-regulated in skin appendages, and epidermal knockout of BAF250a impairs skin appendage development, resulting in phenotypes similar to those of Eda-deficient mouse models. Transcription profiling identifies several target genes regulated by Eda, RelB, and BAF. Notably, RelB and the BAF complex are indispensable for transcription of Eda target genes, and both BAF complex and Eda signaling are required to open chromatin of Eda targets. Our studies thus suggest that Eda initiates a signaling cascade and recruits a BAF complex to specific gene loci to facilitate transcription during organogenesis.

Abstract:
The kinetics of the 2 + 2 cycloaddition reaction between tetracyanoethylene and 2,5-dimethyl- 2,4-hexadiene in different solvents has been studied by following the disappearance of the intermediate EDA-complex spectrophotometrically. It is concluded that the EDA-complex is transformed through a concerted cyclicpolar transition state to give the vinyl cyclobutane derivative (III). The effects of various solvents on the reaction rates have been analysed using a multiparameter approach. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔH0 and ΔS0), of EDA-complex formation and the activation parameters (ΔH# and ΔS#) of the cycloaddition have been discussed.

Abstract:
The reversible, weak ground-state aggregate formed by dipole–dipole interactions between an electron donor and an electron acceptor is referred to as an electron-donor–acceptor (EDA) complex. Generally, upon light irradiation, the EDA complex turns into the excited state, causing an electron transfer to give radicals and to initiate subsequent reactions. Besides light as an external energy source, reactions involving the participation of EDA complexes are mild, obviating transition metal catalysts or photosensitizers in the majority of cases and are in line with the theme of green chemistry. This review discusses the synthetic reactions concerned with EDA complexes as well as the mechanisms that have been shown over the past five years.

Abstract:
The extended downscaling approach (EDA) is a quantitative method in palynology that aims to detect past vegetation patterns and communities in the landscape. The EDA uses iterative forward modelling to fit vegetation composition to robust landscape patterns by comparing simulated with actually observed pollen deposition. The approach employs a set of pollen records, preferably from medium sized to large lakes or peatlands, as well as maps of robust landscape patterns, such as soils and relief. So far, the EDA has been applied in simple settings with only few taxa. To be able to apply the model also in more complex situations, we have implemented the EDA in the R environment for statistical computing. We here test the performance of the EDAinR function in five synthetic scenarios of increasing complexity. In all cases, the EDA is well able to reconstruct vegetation composition, also on rare landscape units. If uncertainty is added both to the pollen data and pollen productivity estimates, the EDA still correctly reconstructs species composition on more than 90% of the total landscape in all scenarios, underlining that the EDA performs well also in complex settings. The EDAinR function will be available within the R package DISQOVER.

Abstract:
The pharmacokinetic profile and tissue uptake of daidzein (DAI) was determined in rat serum and tissues (lungs, eyes, brain, heart, spleen, fat, liver, kidney, and testes) after intravenous and intraperitoneal administration of DAI in suspension or complexed with ethylenediamine-modified γ-cyclodextrin (GCD-EDA/DAI). The absolute and relative bioavailability of DAI suspended (20 mg/kg i.v. vs. 50 mg/kg i.p.) and complexed (0.54 mg/kg i.v. vs. 1.35 mg/kg i.p.) was determined. After i.p. administration, absorption of DAI complexed with GCD-EDA was more rapid (tmax = 15 min) than that of DAI in suspension (tmax = 45 min) with a ca. 3.6 times higher maximum concentration (Cmax = 615 vs. 173 ng/mL). The i.v. half-life of DAI was longer in GCD-EDA/DAI complex compared with DAI in suspension (t0.5 = 380 min vs. 230 min). The volume of distribution of DAI given i.v. in GCD-EDA/DAI complex was ca. 6 times larger than DAI in suspension (38.6 L/kg vs. 6.2 L/kg). Our data support the concept that the pharmacokinetics of DAI suspended in high doses are nonlinear. Increasing the intravenous dose 34 times resulted in a 5-fold increase in AUC. In turn, increasing the intraperitoneal dose 37 times resulted in a ca. 2-fold increase in AUC. The results of this study suggested that GCD-EDA complex may improve DAI bioavailability after i.p. administration. The absolute bioavailability of DAI in GCD-EDA inclusion complex was ca. 3 times greater (F = 82.4% vs. 28.2%), and the relative bioavailability was ca. 21 times higher than that of DAI in suspension, indicating the need to study DAI bioavailability after administration by routes other than intraperitoneal, e.g., orally, subcutaneously, or intramuscularly. The concentration of DAI released from GCD-EDA/DAI inclusion complex to all the rat tissues studied was higher than after administration of DAI in suspension. The concentration of DAI in brain and lungs was found to be almost 90 and 45 times higher, respectively, when administered in complex compared to the suspended DAI. Given the nonlinear relationship between DAI bioavailability and the dose released from the GCD-EDA complex, complexation of DAI may thus offer an effective approach to improve DAI delivery for treatment purposes, for example in mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS), allowing the reduction of ingested DAI doses.

Abstract:
In this study, both practical and theoretical aspects of the solubility of edaravone (EDA) in Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) were considered. The solubility of edaravone in some media, including water, can be limited, which creates the need for new efficient and environmentally safe solvents. The solubility of EDA was measured spectrophotometrically and the complex intermolecular interactions within the systems were studied with the COSMO-RS framework. Of the four studied DES systems, three outperformed the most efficient classical organic solvent, namely dichloromethane, with the DES comprising choline chloride and triethylene glycol, acting as hydrogen bond donor (HBD), in a 1:2 molar proportion yielding the highest solubility of EDA. Interestingly, the addition of a specific amount of water further increased EDA solubility. Theoretical analysis revealed that in pure water or solutions with high water content, EDA stacking is responsible for self-aggregation and lower solubility. On the other hand, the presence of HBDs leads to the formation of intermolecular clusters with EDA, reducing self-aggregation. However, in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of water, a three-molecular EDA–HBD–water complex is formed, which explains why water can also act as a co-solvent. The high probability of formation of this type of complexes is related to the high affinity of the components, which exceeds all other possible complexes.

Abstract:
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder with increasing prevalence in childhood and adolescence. Sympathetic dysregulation is supposed to be the underlying mechanism of increased cardiovascular risk in AN. Thus, we assess the electrodermal activity (EDA) as a non-invasive index of sympathetic cholinergic activity using linear and nonlinear analysis in adolescent AN with the aim of detecting potential biomarkers for AN-linked cardiovascular risk. We examined 25 adolescent girls with AN and 25 age-matched controls. EDA was continuously recorded during a 5-min resting phase. Evaluated parameters were: time-domain (skin conductance level, non-specific skin conductance responses), frequency-domain (EDA in very low, low, sympathetic, high and very high frequency bands) and nonlinear (approximate, sample, symbolic information entropies, detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA)) parameters of EDA and peripheral skin temperature. Our findings revealed lower EDA values indicating a decrease in the sympathetic nervous activity in female adolescents with the acute phase of AN. Further, we found higher nonlinear index DFA in AN vs. controls. We assumed that nonlinear index DFA could provide novel and independent information on the complex sympathetic regulatory network. We conclude that the parameters of complex EDA analysis could be used as sensitive biomarkers for the assessment of sympathetic cholinergic dysregulation as a risk factor for AN-linked cardiovascular morbidity.

Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis manuscript is organized into two main sections. The first section investigates the photocatalytic degradation of N-methoxy-N-(trimethylsilylmethyl)benzaldehyde in the presence of rose Bengal in acetonitrile. We utilized various techniques, including 1D NMR experiments, 1H photo-CIDNP, and 2D 1H-13C HSQC and HMBC analyses, alongside both in situ and ex situ illumination. These methods enabled us to elucidate the structures of several intermediates and products formed during the reaction. Notably, ex situ illumination, executed through a continuous flow system, proved particularly beneficial for complementing our in situ results and making comparisons with synthesized products, underscoring the significant role of ex situ illumination in the study of photochemical reactions. Moreover, the 1H photo-CIDNP experiments clearly indicated that the degradation of the hemiaminal ether in the presence of rose Bengal occurs via the formation of a cation radical, without the generation of any 1,3-dipole intermediates. In the second section, we shifted our focus to the mechanism of the photo-induced alkylation reaction via an EDA complex (Katritzky salt/DIPEA), employing NMR in conjunction with in situ illumination. 1H photo-CIDNP experiments revealed the presence of two distinct EDA complexes in the reaction medium: a 1:1 complex and a 1:2 complex (Katritzky salt: DIPEA), which absorb at λ = 450 nm and λ = 520 nm, respectively. Additional 1D 1H NMR and 1H photo-CIDNP studies demonstrated the absence of leaving group diffusion from the Katritzky salt, confirming that the alkylation reaction occurs within the solvation sphere of the EDA complex. These findings, along with data obtained from 1H DOSY NMR experiments, allowed us to ascertain the nature of the aggregates (EDA complex/substrate) participating in reactivity at both wavelengths. This clearly illustrates the close relationship between the proportion of these aggregates in the reaction medium and the yield of the photo-induced alkylation reaction

Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to the study of the finite time blow-up phenomena for the semilinear waves equations. We treat two models in this work.In the first part, we consider a complex-valued solution for the semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity. We first characterize all the solutions of the associated stationary problem as a two-parameter family. Then, weuse a dynamical system formulation to show that the solution in self-similar variables approaches some particular stationary one in the energy norm, in the non-characteristic case. This gives the blow-up profile for the original equation in the non-characteristic case. The second part is dedicated to the study of the semilinear wave equation with exponential nonlinearity in one space dimension. We generalize the results of Godin to a much larger class of initial data. We prove blow-up estimates near any point and give an optimal bound on the blow-up rate near the non characteristic points

Norén, Katarina. "Coordination Chemistry of Monocarboxylate and Aminocarboxylate Complexes at the Water/Goethite Interface." Doctoral thesis, Umeå University, Chemistry, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-1337.

Abstract:

This thesis is a summary of five papers with focus on adsorption processes of various monocarboxylates and aminocarboxylates at the water/goethite interface. Interaction of organic acids at the water/mineral interfaces are of importance in biogeochemical processes, since such processes have potential to alter mobility and bioavailability of the acids and metal ions.

In order to determine the coordination chemistry of acetate, benzoate, cyclohexanecarboxylate, sarcosine, MIDA (methyliminediacetic acid), EDDA (ethylenediamine-N,N’-diacetic acid) and EDTA (ethylenediamine-N,N’-tetraacetic acid) upon adsorption to the goethite (alpha-FeOOH) surface, a combination of quantitative measurements with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) was utilized.

Over the pH range studied here (pH 3- 9) all ligands, except for sarcosine, have been found to form surface complexes with goethite. In general, theses were characterized as outer sphere surface complexes i.e. with no direct interaction with surface Fe(III) metal ions. Furthermore, two types of different outer-sphere complexes were identified, the solvent-surface hydration-separated ion pair, and hydration-shared ion pair. For the monocarboxylate surface complexes distinction between these two could be made. At high pH values the solvent-surface hydration-separated ion pair was the predominating complex, while at low pH the surface complex is stabilized through the formation of strong hydrogen bonds with the goethite surface. However, it was not possible to clearly separate between the two outer-sphere complexes for coordination of the aminocarboxylates with the surface of goethite. Additionally, EDDA also formed an inner-sphere surface complex at high pH values. The EDDA molecule was suggested to coordinate to the surface by forming a five membered ring with an iron at the goethite surface, through the amine and carboxylate groups.

Contrary to the other ligands studied, EDTA significantly induced dissolution of goethite. Some of the dissolved iron, in the form of the highly stable FeEDTA- solution complex, was indicated to re-adsorb to the mineral surface as a ternary complex. Similar ternary surface complexes were also found in the Ga(III)EDTA/goethite system, and quantitative and spectroscopic studies on adsorption of Ga(III) in presence and absence of EDTA showed that EDTA considerably effects speciation of gallium at goethite surface.

The collective results in this thesis show that the affinity of these ligands for the surface of goethite is primarily governed by their chemical composition and structure, and especially important are the types, numbers and relative position of functional groups within the molecular structure.

Berhane, Sarah. "The effect of Adenovirus E1A on the human immunoproteasome and MHC complex." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3369/.

Full text
Abstract:
Adenovirus E1A (AdE1A) is a viral oncoprotein that targets many cellular proteins and pathways, mainly those involved in transcriptional regulation. Proteasomes represent the major non-lysosomal mechanism responsible for protein degradation. Following interferon-γ treatment, three proteasome subunits are replaced by immunosubunits LMP2, LMP7 and MECL-1 producing immunoproteasomes. The proteasome and immunoproteasome generate peptide antigens for MHC class I presentation to cytotoxic T-cells. In this study, the effect of AdE1A on human immunoproteasomes as well as MHC class I and class II cell surface expression was examined. It was found that AdE1A interacts with the immunoproteasome subunit MECL-1 through its N-terminal and CR3 regions. AdE1A also down-regulated all three immunosubunit expressions during adenovirus infection, transformation and AdE1A transfection, with the exception of Ad5-transformed cells where immunosubunit expression remained unchanged. Furthermore, MHC class I expression remained unaffected in the same three backgrounds. However, in the Ad12 transformants MHC class I was generally reduced prior to IFNγ treatment but was expressed after. MHC class II surface expression, in contrast, was down-regulated in all cases, except in Ad5 infected cells. Similarly, AdE1A reduced IFNγ-stimulated STAT1 phosphorylation and transcriptional response to IFNγ. And finally, T-cell recognition of target cells was reduced in the presence of AdE1A. In conclusion, AdE1A targets the human immunoproteasome, both through direct binding and down-regulation of expression. It also targets the expression of MHC class I and class II surface expression.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I analyze how conflict and affection, as designed by the German philosopher Axel Honneth, especially in his work The Struggle for Recognition: Moral Grammar of Social Conflicts, interfere with the dynamics of a group made up of professors and pre-service teachers in e-learning. From the perspective of Complex Thought of the French sociologist Edgar Morin, I conceive the group as a complex social system. As an exploratory research, I started with the reading of the autobiographical essays wrote by the students who completed the Degree in Spanish in Federal University of Santa Maria in 2013. In those essays, I identified situations around conflicts and affective recognition experienced by the pre-service teachers, and then I selected some informants. These informants participated in narrative interviews, in which they told their respective academic trajectories. Later, I also interviewed the professors, mentioned by them in situations of affective or conflictual interaction. I analyzed all this material from the perspective of Reconstructive Hermeneutics, making the different narratives dialogue to reconstruct the situations experienced by the narrators. From this reconstruction emerges the fact that affectivity is a constant in the relations established in e-learning and we can see it as a facilitator of learning, as well as a cohesive force that tends to keep straight the complex social system. Also, emerge conflict situations. Although the conflict is not seen as something desirable, it shows potential as a maintainer of the complex social system, and it demonstrates power to stimulate new ways of thinking, to create innovative strategies of work and new dynamics of interaction between people. Innovation resulting from the conflict serves as negentropic force, which is opposed to entropy or systemic loss of energy, contributing to the longevity of this system and to obtain positive results in educational terms. I hope these findings tend to contribute to the understanding of the dynamics of relationships in e-learning, allowing its professors understand the importance of human interactions that are revealed behind the computers.

Experimental tests were performed at the Teaching, Research and Extension Farm (FEPE / UNESP), located in Selvíria-MS: Eucalyptus planted forest Eucalyptus camaldulensis (EU); Planted Pine Forest - Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis (PI); Silvipastoral system (SI) with an area containing Aroeira (Myracrodruon urundeuva) and native grass (Brachiaria decumbens), and Mata Nativa (MN). The effects of physical attributes: soil density (Ds), macroporosity (Ma), microporosity (Mi) and chemicals attributes were studied with special emphasis on properties related to soil carbon dynamics: soil organic matter (MO), soil carbon stock (EstC), soil nitrogen stock (EstN), carbon and nitrogen ratio (C / N), and the degree of soil organic matter (HLIFS). Soil CO2 emission (FCO2), soil moisture and temperature were evaluated in the areas during three distinct periods (defined from the water regime observed in the areas) called P1, P2 and P3, season rainfall, drought and transition, respectively, between March... Abstract:
Complex systems are found in almost all field of contemporary science, and are associated with a wide variety of financial, physical, biological, information and social systems. Complex systems consist of a large number of nonlinearly interacting components which display collective behaviour that does not follow trivially from the behaviours of the individual parts. Although complex systems have many different properties, the most important are: dimensionality, uncertainty, nonlinearity and coupling between components. The procedures to obtain analytical models are usually classified into physical modeling and identification. These procedures cannot be implemented easily if applied to complex systems because the properties, which arise from these systems, make difficult the modeling. Since a mathematical model is a description of system behaviour, accurate modeling for a complex system is very difficult to achieve in practice. Furthermore, sometimes, it may even be impossible to describe the system by analytical equations. The present dissertation tries to address two issues regarding the modeling and diagnosis of complex systems. The first one deals with the issue of modeling a complex system, in the case the analytical model is not obtainable. The second one deals with the issue of diagnosing the system behaviour. Diagnosis should detect if the complex system is normal or a change is occurring due to abnormal events and in addition, the probable causes of the abnormal events should be detected by means of the diagnosis. Modeling of complex systems is addressed developing data-driven procedures, which are able to learn the complex system dynamics from data that are provided by installed sensors on the system in order to monitor the physical system variables. Diagnosis of complex systems is addressed developing machine learning procedures in order to classify the probable causes of deviations from system normal events. A large amount of attention is paid to the issue of modeling and diagnosis for complex systems with particular attention to real systems, for this different applications are discussed as many case studies. The first application deals with the issue of modeling and diagnose the defects and faults in a Quality Control scenario for electric motors. The second application deals with the issue of modeling and diagnose a complex industrial system as a paper mill plant. The third application deals with the issue of estimating the residual useful life of a turbofan engine and the last deals with the issue of modeling the Electroencephalography signals by data-driven algorithms in order to diagnose the user intentions. This solution addresses the modeling problem in the Brain Computer Interface context. Since the modeling and diagnosis problem is faced by data-driven procedures, the developed algorithms can be applied to a wide class of rotating electrical machines and complex industrial systems, and not only to those mentioned.

Benavides, Mario. "Microspherule Protein Msp58 and Ubiquitin Ligase EDD Form a Stable Complex that Regulates Cell Proliferation." Thesis, City University of New York, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3561768.

Abstract:

A complex molecular network is put into place at specific phases of the cell cycle to prevent unscheduled cell division that could result in malignant cell growth. Emerging evidence shows that still uncharacterized proteins play crucial functions at those cell cycle transition points. Nuclear protein Msp58 and EDD E3 ubiquitin ligase have been implicated in different aspects of cell proliferation and reported to be abnormally expressed in numerous types of cancers. The molecular mechanisms underlying Msp58 and EDD functions, however, are not well understood. The work presented here shows that Msp58 and EDD form a stable protein complex that regulates cell viability and proliferation. Interestingly, knockdown of EDD by RNA interference leads to a significant accumulation of Msp58 protein, which suggests that EDD serves as a negative regulator of Msp58. In addition, our in vivo ubiquitination assays and analyses of various cell lines treated with translational and proteasomal inhibitors demonstrate that Msp58 is regulated post-translationally by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. These results imply that EDD ligase activity is involved in this regulatory process. Using flow cytometry analyses and biochemical characterization of Msp58 and/or EDD depleted cells, we show that the Msp58-EDD complex plays important roles in cell cycle progression via the control of cyclin gene expression. In particular, silencing Msp58 and/or EDD alters the protein levels of cyclins B, D and E. Taken together, our data suggest that a set of the biological roles attributed to Msp58 and EDD may be executed in the context of the complex that they form, thereby revealing a novel molecular mechanism for these two proteins to accomplish their functions.

Abstract:
Protocol to Manage Relationships Today explains the contemporary value of protocol, not only for monarchies or diplomatic institutes, but for any non-profit or for-profit organisation. This book presents modern protocol as a tool to build strong, authentic networks of reciprocal relationships. When used effectively protocol can: - Increase the effect of the networking activities of an organisation. Protocol gives a professional structure to relationship management, to achieve access to the 'right' networks and a reciprocal relationship with the most valued stakeholders. - Deepen relationships. In our world there is so much focus on pragmatism in building relationships - protocol focuses on the common ground to gain value. - Be used as a valuable tool in a post COVID-19 era, where the need for space and time to build real and authentic relationships is well understood. The book defines how tested values perfectly fit in today's society, where modern organisations want to build effective relationships and communities. This book is focused on developing an increasingly vital expertise for professionals who deal with complex relationship management issues on a strategic and tactical operational level. They come from different fields, such as government institutions, non-profit organisations and commercial environments. This book also gives protocol officers a contemporary approach towards the application of protocol. It is not designed as a complete guide to all the rules of protocol, but it describes how to translate the context into a tailor-made protocol for each meeting or event. The book explains protocol as a flexible method to handle unique situations. Protocol is presented on four levels: the 'why' of protocol; the strategic and tactical level; the practical implementation; and the execution of protocol. Protocol to Manage Relationships Today is written by Europe's foremost protocol experts with collective years of experience with the management of networking meetings and events at the highest level.

Abstract:
Mai mult, am prezentat teoria in modalitați aplicative.

Abstract:
The aim of this book is to collate what is known about an array of complicating factors for patients with eating disorders, serving as an accessible introduction to each of the comorbidities and symptom presentations highlighted in the volume. The Handbook of Complex and Atypical Eating Disorders presents the available data about atypical and complex ED, in addition to what is known about treatment approaches. The first section contains chapters on the treatment of eating disorders with various psychiatric comorbidities, including trauma, borderline personality disorder, substance use, suicidality, anxiety disorders, and autism spectrum disorders, which may greatly complicate the application of standard treatment approaches. The second section contains chapters exploring treatment of eating disorders with atypical symptom presentations which (i) are not located as a specific diagnostic category in diagnostic criteria for ED’s, (ii) centrally feature ED pathology, and (iii) have emerging data suggesting the distinct nature of the syndrome, including purging disorder, muscle dysmorphia, night eating syndrome, and anorexia with a history of obesity. The final section has chapters which focus on how to adapt eating disorder treatment for atypical populations typically neglected in controlled treatment trials: LGBT, pediatric, male, ethnically diverse, and older adults.

Abstract:
Eating disorders (EDs) often arise from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social processes in which there is a dialectical tension between the overabundance of food and an obsession with thinness. The DSM-5 recognizes three specific types of EDs that are common in borderline personality disorder (BPD): anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). The impulsive, self-destructive tendencies of those with BPD may also make them particularly vulnerable to developing an ED. Recent advances in neuroscience have resulted in great understanding of the brain mechanisms and processes that control behavior associated with EDs and BPD. Research has supported the idea that the co-occurrence of both disorders may be caused by an inability to tolerate and skillfully manage negative or unpleasant emotions. Other possible commonalities between EDs and BPD involve shared risk factors, such as a history of childhood trauma.

Abstract:

Abstract:

AbstractThe current effort in 3D digitisation of heritage items poses new challenges in accommodating more and higher quality information to be associated with the 3D models that are of interest to users and stakeholders. The Europeana Data Model (EDM) is a metadata schema that distinguishes between the information related to the cultural heritage object as such (represented by the class edm:ProvidedCHO) and the information related to its digital representation (edm:WebResource), brought together in the class ore:Aggregation. Work done in the context of the new common European data space for cultural heritage collected inputs from various experts and initiatives working on 3D data, metadata and paradata, in the light of studying requirements for the extension and adaptation of EDM classes to the more complex scenario of representing and sharing 3D digitised cultural heritage collections.

Abstract:
PRCI reports have summarized GHGRP data and improved emissions factors based on the data. Pipeline blowdown emissions reporting was added to the GHGRP in 2016 and only one year of quality data (2017 reporting year) was available for the PRCI reports (versus 6 years of data compiled for compressor stations). To assess additional data, pipeline blowdown emissions for 2018 (released by EPA in late 2019) were compiled and analyzed. The data shows similar trends for 2017 and 2018, as well as consistency with the historical emission factor for pipeline blowdown emissions from the 1996 EPA/GRI Study.

McFee, Erin, and Jonathan Röders. Research Brief: Conflict, Climate Change and Environmental Degradation. Trust After Betrayal, February 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.59498/99780.

Full text
Abstract:
This research brief examines the interconnected challenges of climate change, environmental degradation (ED), and armed conflict. The brief highlights the complex relationships between natural resources, ED, and organised violence through multi-sited examples of habitat destruction, pollution, water scarcity, oil and gas-related conflicts, and deforestation. Every such fragile setting exhibits an intricate interwovenness of climate change and ED into the tapestry of sociopolitical and economic violence. Effectively addressing the causes of armed conflict influenced by environmental factors necessitates a contextualised understanding of this dynamic. The research brief also acknowledges the differential impacts of ED's consequences on marginalised populations while highlighting the potential for women to play a transformative role in addressing ED and insecurity.

Gu, Jing, Danielle Green, and Jiadan Yu. Building Back Better: Sustainable Development Diplomacy in the Pandemic Era. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), December 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.065.

Full text
Abstract:
This report critically examines the nature of the distinction between traditional inter-state diplomacy and sustainable development diplomacy. It then sets out the institutional changes which are necessary for the achievement of sustainable development diplomacy. Multi-stakeholder partnerships have been identified as a key means of implementation for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Given the increasing centrality of the United States (US)–China relationship in global development cooperation, understanding the modalities of their engagement may provide useful insights into how partnerships may be cultivated and deepened to realise the SDGs. The Covid-19 pandemic and climate change have demonstrated the interconnection of the world, as well as the interconnection of challenges of the world. Sustainable development diplomacy is needed now more than ever to prioritise development strategies of different states and work on common shared challenges. Sustainable development diplomacy can only work when different actors recognise the value of the common goals and are willing to make an effort to accomplish them. Global sustainable development diplomacy requires a stronger policy agenda and greater cohesion. This report explores the idea of sustainable development diplomacy and, through two sectoral case studies, explores the nature, function, and rationale for interactive engagement. The form and structure of multi-actor relationships are a response to complex, trans-border political, social, economic, and environmental challenges which require a more nuanced and varied management approach than narrowly defined state-led development. However, the power dynamics, the modalities, and experiences of engagement that underpin these dynamic relationships, remain understudied, especially with regard to their impact on sustainable development.

Omino, Akira. Working paper PUEAA No. 13. Contesting Space in Postwar Tokyo's Sanya Day Labor District. Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Programa Universitario de Estudios sobre Asia y África, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.22201/pueaa.011r.2022.

Abstract:
This article examines a series of day laborer riots that occurred between 1959 and 1962 in Tokyo's largest day laborer district, Sanya. In doing so, it attempts to understand how local social changes were related to the riots. This paper argues that these riots represent a radical reaction on the part of Sanya's day laborers to the complex macroeconomic changes accompanying the era of high-speed growth. These changes, intimately related to the domestic construction industry, transformed Sanya into a profitable urban space in which capital could be invested and value generated.

Scartascini, Carlos. Tax Reforms in Latin America in an Era of Democracy. Inter-American Development Bank, December 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011523.

Full text
Abstract:
The literature on taxes and public finance generally focuses on revenues, an easily observable and generally available variable, as the observable measure of tax policy. Still, revenues depend on many determinants other than the political will and policy objectives of the government. It is therefore important, when studying the politics of taxation, to evaluate specific changes to the tax code such as rates, bases and exemptions. With the underlying goal of exploring the political process and the determinants of tax policy, this paper compiles a novel and highly comprehensive database of tax reforms for Latin America between 1990 and 2004. The paper presents a description of the database as well as the stylized facts of tax reforms in Latin America. Examples of the database's uses are discussed, as is motivation for future research.

Hatef, Elham, Renee F. Wilson, Susan M. Hannum, Allen Zhang, Hadi Kharrazi, Jonathan P. Weiner, Stacey A. Davis, and Karen A. Robinson. Use of Telehealth During the COVID-19 Era. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepcsrcovidtelehealth.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives. To assess how to provide telehealth care by identifying characteristics of telehealth delivery, patient populations, settings, benefits and harms, and implementation strategies during the COVID-19 era. Data sources. PubMed®, CINAHL®, PsycINFO®, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from March 2020 to May 2022. Additional studies were identified from reference lists and experts. Review methods. We included studies that reported characteristics of telehealth use; benefits and harms of telehealth; factors impacting the success of telehealth, including satisfaction/dissatisfaction and barriers/facilitators; and implementation outcomes. We conducted a mixed-methods review, synthesizing quantitative and qualitative studies. Two reviewers independently screened search results for eligibility, serially extracted data, and independently assessed risk of bias of included studies. Results. We included 764 studies; 310 studies were included in our syntheses. Patients using telehealth were more likely to be people who are young to middle-aged, female, White, of higher socioeconomic status, and living in urban settings. Visits for mental and behavioral health conditions were more frequent than visits for other conditions, and mental or behavioral care was also more likely to be delivered via telehealth than care for other conditions. Across a variety of conditions, telehealth produced similar clinical outcomes as compared with in-person care. Telehealth care is appropriate for some patients, but more information is necessary to determine the suitability of telehealth for specific patient populations; patients and providers felt that telehealth may be less suitable and less desirable for patients with complex clinical conditions; and some patients perceive telehealth as a barrier to improved health outcomes owing to the absence of a physical exam and challenges in developing rapport and communicating with their care team. There was a lack of evidence addressing implementation cost, penetration, and sustainability of telehealth, and about telehealth implementation at the health system level. Conclusions. Whereas telehealth use spiked after the beginning of the pandemic, the characteristics of patients using telehealth follow a pattern similar to that for other healthcare and digital health services. We found that the use of telehealth may be comparable to in-person care across different clinical and process outcomes. Telehealth implementation has addressed the needs of both patients and providers to some extent, even as clinical conditions, patient and provider characteristics, and type of assessment varied. Telehealth has provided a viable alternative mode of care delivery during the pandemic and holds promise for the future.

Hvozdyk, Lyudmyla, and Valerie Mercer-Blackman. What Determines Investment in the Oil Sector?: A New Era for National and International Oil Companies. Inter-American Development Bank, August 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011114.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses recent trends in investment in the oil sector, amid new challenges for national and international oil companies in an increasingly supply-constrained environment. After more than a decade of stagnant investment rates, nominal investment has picked up sharply over the three years ending in 2007, but soaring costs (including from higher tax rates and royalties) meant that investment growth was minimal in real terms. The paper performs econometric tests using the Arellano-Bond GMM technique. It finds that `below ground¿ risks are statistically very important in deterring real investment. Companies are taking on increasingly complex geological challenges, which are putting upward pressure on production costs and are leading to greater project delays compared to the past. As many of these factors are expected to persist, supply constraints are likely to remain a dominant factor behind oil price fluctuations during the next several years.
