Full textThe purpose of the thesis « Tempus edax rerum » (« Le temps rongeur dévore tout », Ovide). Le voyage sur ses propres pas dans les écrits du prince Henryk Lubomirski is to approach the question of the second journey and the repercussions of the comeback to the same places on the author's perception. These problems are undertaken through the careful lecture of a number of up-to-date unknown manuscripts: that is, prince Henryk Lubomirski's travel diary and the correspondence with his adoptive mother Izabella Lubomirska, as well as others testimonies.In the preliminary part of the research, it was necessary to define the second journey, which for the purposes of this study, is a real experience of the already-visited. The very repetition of the itinerary allowed to discern the differences in the perception of landscapes, places of interest and historic monuments, all due to different factors; among which are someone's real life experience which form, modify and vary the traveller's sensibility. This in turn made possible an attempt to investigate the specificity of the doubled or renewed look apart from the underlying reasons, such as journey destination, motivation of the traveller, and the biography of the latter.The first part presents the history of the second journey, tracing it back to the Middle Ages, when it was a very uncommon phenomenon, and concluding with the French Revolution which is the moment of a sudden change, putting an end to one kind of travelling and giving way to another experience related to new sensibility, deriving from revolutionary upheaval. Thus, the study attempts to reveal particularity and universality of the second journey in the post-revolutionary era.This in itself is looked at through the lens of Goethe's peregrination across Italy and Chateaubriand's comebacks to Rome and London. In their texts the repetition evokes different emotions. Goethe being disappointed, in his account the new impressions drive away the old ones. Thus, for him the value of the second journey is based on erasing. Chateaubriand, on the other hand, draws a parallel between different times of his life as he observes the accumulation of sensations. The accounts of two Polish travellers from the period complete this historical section.In the second part are approached prince Henryk Lubomirski's biography and the circumstances of his second journey. In particular, his cultural background is taken into account as well as his adoptive mother's influence on his upbringing. She accompanied him in his Grand Tour in 1789-1780 and later on, in his maturity, assisting him in the task of the Polish cultural heritage protection.In 1811 he and his family leave Geneva because of his wife health problems. The stay in the South of France was planned to help her in her recovery and finding mental equilibrium. The journey takes place across post-revolutionary France where traces of atrocities are still clearly visible. The prince describes meticulously itinerary, means of transport, accommodation and events he attends. He writes down prices and practical information. He is particularly fond of landscapes he looks at with new sensibility, characteristic for the period. The sublime search, reflexions on the relation between nature and the states of soul and the fragility of the human fate multiply in the relation.The third part is related to memory and its different dimensions: individual, collective and national. We note that there is no innocent perception, it is always tinged with author's personal history. The memory lets the traveller read again places already visited and triggers memories. Thanks to its affective activity it converts neutral places into symbols of the pleasant, allowing the traveller to succeed in his perennial quest of recovering the world that no longer exists and finding himself back

Full textThe thesis shows how literature and art communicate, and how this relation is introduced by the theme of Greece. The purpose of this research is within the frame of a comparative study about the relation between literature and the arts, more precisely, architecture, sculpture and painting. We think that at first it is necessary to define a few principles which have already been described by writers, scholars of comparative studies and anesthetics and sociologists. In this study, we are going to examine the opposite face of the problem that is how a literature subject becomes the subject of a painting or of a sculpture. We are examining a subject, the 19th century, Gautier and Greece, considering in particular the relation between literature and the plastic arts: painting, sculpture and architecture, as our work is based upon this century. In our research about the sources, we have started examining Gautier’s works: Mlle de Maupin, Poésies complètes (T. I, II, III), Le Voyage en Turquie (chapter dedicated to Greece), Le Voyage en Grèce, Arria Marcella, Spirite, Avatar, Jettatura, La Toison d’Or, La Morte Amoureuse as well as the articles about art published on the press: Moniteur universel, La Presse, L’Artiste, Le Journal Officiel, La Revue de Paris, Le Guide de l’Amateur au Musée du Louvre. Therefore, the method we have used is, at the same time, historical and social as it is based on a research about the sources and about the social and cultural background; and theorist, as it is based on the situation of theoretical studies; analytical, as it also based on an approach based on interpretation, analysis and thematic structure

Full textThis study proposes an analysis of French women’s travels to Japan from the end of the Sakoku to the period just after the WWII. French women’s presence in History of travel and travel writing has been quite undervalued. Those subjects tend to be silenced in French historiography by the fact that main resources are dominated by male travelers. Even English-language and Japanese studies about Western Women’s travels in Japan, may have somehow muted them. Despite being identified for some, they aren’t studied, mostly because an apparent lack of resources. Who were those French women travelling to Japan and for some even settling there? Why and how did they travel? Did they leave their mark by writing about their experience or their settlement?By bringing together investigations in French and Japanese archives about the travelers and their possible writings (published, unpublished and personal handwritten papers) but also interviews with women travelers’ descendants it was possible to elaborate an overview of French women travelling situation in Japan (19th and 20th century) and build a resources database for their travel writings between 1859 and 1949. Because travelling as a women had specificities, how women travelers did write about their experiences has been impacted. Results of crossing the resources database and a corpus of 5 documents showed how women’s travel writings were not opposing to males ones but completing each other by bringing different representations of Japanese exoticism and alterity

Full textIn order to do this analysis, is developed an hermeneutic model of analysis which divides Celine's work into a poetical investigation and a polemic pursuit that demonstrate that these two genres use the same rhetorical strategies.
Part I of this thesis investigates the distinct rhetoric used by Celine in mixing poetry and polemic. Part II examines the poetic investigation and the polemic pursuit separately, Celine having separated these two genres after Journey to the End of the Night.
Without eliminating the differences between poetry and polemic, this thesis aims at demonstrating the continuity and coherence of Celine's work which is particularly well suited for putting an hermeneutic model of analysis to the test because it is a work that is torn more than any other between the ravishing and the horrific, between the beautiful and the terrifying. And that is where in this profound humanity Celine's work is so rich in interpretation.

Full textThe reception of French architecture in the 16th and 17th centuries by French and foreign contemporaries is unquestionably lacking. Visitors remain unknown, even though they are the spectators of great architectural shows. Their descriptions and mental images of palaces and stately homes, and also of churches, bridges, fortifications, gardens and their like, however, once reassembled enable one, to define the architectural flavour of a period and of a nation. It was thus essential to build up a coprus of texts and images of the 16th and 17th centuries and to analyse them in detail. Handwritten texts, printed documents and graphic representations left behind by antique dealers and geographers as well as travel diaries and newspapers written by inquiring notaries, scholars or even anonymous people were all analysed in an attempt to answer three important questions, namely who are the people behind this reception? In which conditions did their vsits take place? And in their view, what are the most outstanding buildings in France? However self-evident these questions may seem, they have never been tackled. And yet they form the clues to our reading which must no longer be ignored, even more so as they conceal the details of architecture which transpires to be new, unique, and not to be missed

Full textThis PhD dissertation aims to analyse French painters travel writing in the 19th century. We will present the reasons that encourage painters to write about their travels, as well as the place held by these writings within their writing practice. We make several considerations on the way in which these writings fit into the larger phenomenon of 19th century travel literature, given the new relationships established between the artistic and the literary fields. Travel writings hold a privileged place within the category of artists’ writings and span over both utility writing and writing driven by literary ambitions. They provoke the researcher to identify the painters’ artistic recognition strategies, but also to investigate the aesthetic, theoretical and literary aspects of their writings. The period under analysis, which goes from Napoleon’s Egypt expedition to the death of Gauguin, is rich in aesthetic changes, and it allows us to point out the mechanisms of an evolving practice, particularly sensitive to the developments in the literary and scientific fields

Full textThis study concerns itself with two aspects of the techniques of French-speaking travel writers who visited China between 1840 and 1939 and of those who lived thereduring this period: on the one hand their writing practices and on the other the manner inwhich their texts deal with the notions of exoticism and the Other. The archetype of the romantic voyage constitutes an important reference, but the preceding centuries are takeninto account, too. The study integrates the geographical, historical, political, cultural andphilosophical complexities which characterised the West and the Far East during this particular hundred-year period. These « collective » factors are complemented by other similarly important but specifically personal elements : the individual character of thejourney, biographical details, spiritual convictions, reading preferences and the writers’particular conceptions of literature and writing.The first part of the dissertation examines the founding characteristics of the travelwriting and approaches the corpus from an historical perspective. The second part exploresthe interactions between the journey itself and the way it is described in order to highlightan art of composition which transforms experience and memories into writing. The thirdpart considers the travel writing as the work of the imaginary through a synthesizing analysis of exoticism, and the problem of the representation of the Other by means of twounifying themes: the blank areas on the map and the Chinese language

Full textOn one hand, the study identifies and analyzes discourse patterns common to oral discourse of tour guides and that of writer-guides. On the other hand, it offers didactic perspectives resulting from the study of the discourse patterns. The variables analyzed are discursive themes, polyphony, personal and non personal deictics, spatial deictics and temporal deictics. The study postulates that the discourse patterns characterizing oral discourse of tour guides and written discourse of writerguides are similar and complementary. This research is based on an oral corpus comprising thirteen hours of audio recordings of guided tours in Togo and a written corpus from two tourist guides (Petit Futé Togo and Petit Futé Ghana) on Togo and Ghana. The results of the study show nine major themes marking the discourse of tour guides and that of the writer-guides. These include political system, important personalities, history and population, culture, economics, geography, security agents, education and preparation for one’s journey. The analysis also reveals the presence of polyphony in both the tour guides’ and writer-guides’ discourse. With regard to deictics, the oral and the written discourse exhibit more similarities than differences. The study proposes didactic perspectives in the form of classroom activities and lesson plans for training of tour guides in french as a foreign language in Ghana

Full textAlexander von Humboldt's American travelogue (Relation historique du Voyage aux Régions équinoxiales du Nouveau Continent, 3 vols., 1814-1831) defies generic definitions: It is a complex hybrid of diverse scientific discourses, documentations of empirical data, diary writing, and traditional forms of travel narrative. Humboldt's poetics specifically undermine the conventional format of the travelogue. All its central features which could lend the text coherence and make it readable for the recipient, are charged with multiple meanings and become thus destabilized: (1) the subject (traveller, author, narrator, signature, personal pronouns), (2) the object (the countries that the travelogue is supposed to thematize, their various and contradictory forms of denomination and description in the text), (3) the addressee (the explicit narratee as well as the implicit reader and the interpretive community), and finally (4) the text itself (as a literary genre or discoursive phenomenon, its format, its polyphony, its self-reference and self-reflection). A narratological analysis and a structural reading lead us to the question of how Humboldt's poetics reflect his approach to cultural difference. The specific kind of deconstruction of the travelogue which is at work here de-authorizes imperial forms of colonial writing. There are no "identities" and "differences" which can be defined unequivocally from a privileged perspective. Humboldt's travelogue can thus be read within the paradigm provided by contemporary postcolonial theory: In the encounter with "the other", Homi Bhabha observed, "the language of the master becomes hybrid".

Full textThe commercial and colonial companies responsible for the world's opening up from the 161h century onwards have played a part, alongside other institutions such as the Church or the State, in the transformations of the relations to the written ward as they have been established since the beginning of modernity. In order to understand these connections between the history of written culture and the history of European expansion in early modem limes several explorations have been conducted around the Verenigde Oosllndische Compagnie (VOC), the Dutch East India Company, founded in 1602. By the turn of the 171h century, while the Iberian monopoly on trade with the Indies was ending, written documents -be they geographical maps, logbooks or descriptions and histories of non-European countries -acquired a major political dimension, so much 50 that they became guarantors of overseas appropriation. But the desire to control information and knowledge concerning the non• European worlds rapidly brought about conflicts between the VOC and the printing world and urged the Company to intervene, on several occasions, in order to prevent the publication of anything touching upon its reserved domain, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Strait of Magellan. Meanwhile, the Company was intent on setting up its own writing system for the sailing of its ships and long-distance administration of its possessions. Considering this strict and secret writing system, the sole will to knowledge, from the standpoint of which the countless writings produced by modem European overseas expansion have too often been read, hardly had a place

Full textHow does the imaginary of places stemming from literature contributes to enhance a territory? At a time when rural areas, aspiring to strengthen their attractiveness, take actions to renew their image, the literary heritage can be considered a resource: writers' houses, routes or literary trails thus contribute to the territorial inscription of literature and its imagination. This thesis is interested in the creation of such places, in their animation and in their territorial integration. It also deals with their reception and with their appropriation by the inhabitants and tourists. A statistical analysis of writer's houses in France allows for a typology which underlines the structural, spatial and organizational specificities of these polymorphic places. In addition, case studies inform about the peculiarities of the relation between author and place, and about the dynamics of the house as multi-actors territorial project. Two methods are implemented to seize the visitors’ representations: a survey by questionnaire, extended by the analysis of a more creative and more sensitive way of expression, visitors' log (« livres d’or »). The analysis of questionnaires underlines the diversity of the motives for visits which are not exclusively literary. The study of visitors' log highlights the immersive dimensions of an experience where feelings meet memories and imagination. A multiscalar typology of literary routes is then realized, enriched by case studies. From Berry to Provence, from the Cévennes to Quebec via Livradois, literary routes propose the exploring of a region together with a writer and imaginary characters. They so redefine the notion of authenticity by transcending the usual demarcation between the reality and fiction. All the analyzed elements contribute to consider a form of tourism combining knowledge, imagination and experimentation of places, drawing the outlines of a new tourist practice of space : that of a literary tourism focused on itinerancy and creativity

Full textThis thesis investigates the collective literary Project entitled Rwanda: écrire par devoir de mémoire, written by nine Francophone, African intellectuals in response to the genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda. Six of them are fictional novels or travel diaries by non- Rwandans, based on the stories and adaptations of the stories of survivors. There is one poetry anthology and two texts by Rwandans: a survivor’s testimony and an essay by a Tutsi who was in exile during the genocide. A comparison of the literary strategies, used by the authors to respond both individually and collectively to the difficulty of writing the ‘inexpressible’, forms the basis of this analysis. It explores trauma theory and its application to literature and fiction, focusing on how signs of traumatic memory are made visible in the texts. Based on Ricoeur’s notion of triple mimesis, it considers the interaction between victim, writer/text and reader/listener which re-establishes the communication interrupted by the trauma of genocide. The thesis considers the initiation, aims and challenges of the Project. It provides an overview of the origins and consequences of the genocide as observed by the writers. A literary analysis of each of the nine texts separately allows the reader to appreciate the variety of approaches: collective/individual; witness-survivor/indirect witness; fact/fiction, and the blending of these opposites. A synthesis of the recurring motifs, lieux de mémoire and emblematic characters foregrounds tensions that emerge in the postgenocide society between memory and forgetting, identity and alterity, survivors and exiles, forgiveness and justice, survival and the death experience. These elements create an intertextual, fictional world that is nevertheless anchored in the reality of genocide, a polyphonic narrative which contributes to a deeper understanding of the collective horror of the genocide.
