Šedina, Jan. "Psychological and Sociological Aspects of Investing in Stock Markets." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2011. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-96356.

Full text
Abstract:
This work is mainly focused on the environment of stock markets. It aims to identify some psychological and sociological factors relating to investors' behaviour which may help to justify occurrence of excessive movements in stock market prices resulting in price "bubbles" and stock market crashes. It emphasizes that the assumptions for the validity of the Efficient Markets Hypothesis based on dominant position of rational investors in stock markets have been empirically undermined by number of experiments and observations. As one of the most vigorous alternative challenging the Efficient Market Hypothesis is now considered the theory of behavioural finance stressing some imperfections of human behaviour which may substantially influence dynamics of stock market prices in both directions.

Abstract:
This work examines the socio-economic context of the small town of Eichelborn in the Westphalia region of Germany. There, a local and 'moral' economy existed until the end of the 1960's that resisted the forces of integration into a wider self-regulatory market system for an exceptionally long time, continuing to rely primarily on simple craft production and small-scale farming for the local market. Employing mainly qualitative methods, the aim of research was to describe the economic and social structure of this place as well as to determine whether it functioned according to the principles of a pre-market society as indicated in Karl Polanyi's writings. The findings of my research show that one can, indeed, understand Eichelborn as a Polanyi-type community and as a 'moral' economy in which a strong interrelation and unity between the social and economic realms result in the reconciliation between 'personal self-interest' and 'morality'.

Elliot, Michael. "Happiness in the private physiotherapy sector of South Africa." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/15171.

Full text
Abstract:
There is limited research pertaining to assessing the happiness levels of various disciplines within the healthcare industry. Furthermore, happiness and physiotherapy studies are two research areas that are not necessarily associated with one another on a global perspective. Hence, the happiness levels have not been adequately established for private physiotherapists. This treatise is the first attempt to evaluate the happiness levels of private physiotherapists in South Africa. A thorough literature review was conducted to determine the current climate of happiness studies pertaining to the business industry, with focus on private physiotherapy businesses in the healthcare sector. The literature review enabled the development of a hypothesised model, which was tested with quantitative techniques consisting of a questionnaire, data collection and statistical analysis. The research confirmed that influence, social relations, life balance, optimism, work and leisure are all positively associated with the happiness levels of private physiotherapists in South Africa. These variables are recommended as key focus areas for physiotherapy business owners to address, in order to positively affect happiness levels in the workplace and thereby create favourable bottom line results. In accordance with the reviewed literature and the findings of this treatise, by adequately addressing these variables the business owners of physiotherapy practices will generate a workforce that are more productive, demonstrate greater collaboration with colleagues and customers, produce happier customers, are more positively energised and are less absent and more loyal to the business. It is recommended that the proposed model is tested to provide further benefit to the industry by constructing evidence-based retention and recruitment strategies for high performing private physiotherapy staff.

Hoffmann, Nimi. "The role of the instrumental principle in economic explanations." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002842.

Full text
Abstract:
Economic explanations tend to view individuals as acting to satisfy their preferences, so that when given a choice between goods, individuals choose those goods which have greater utility for them – they choose those goods which they believe can best satisfy their preferences in the circumstances at hand. In this thesis, I investigate how utility theory works when it is used to explain behaviour. In theory, utility is a positive concept. It is intended to describe and explain an individual’s behaviour without judging or justifying it. It also seems to be regarded as non-hypothetical, for it explains an individual’s behaviour in terms of preferences which need not be shared by others, but may be wholly particular to her. This implies a distinctive way of approaching people’s behaviour as isolated from and immune to the judgements of a community, for utility cannot be used as a common standard by which we judge an individual’s behaviour as better or worse, appropriate or inappropriate. I argue that this theoretical treatment of utility is substantially different from the practice of using utility to explain behaviour. In the first place, when utility is used to explain behaviour as preference-guided, it treats this behaviour as rational action. An explanation of rational action is, however, necessarily governed by the instrumental principle. This principle is normative – it stipulates the correct relation between a person’s means and her ends, rather than simply describing an existing relation. The principle is also non-hypothetical – our commitment to the principle does not rely on the possession of particular ends, but on having ends in general. The instrumental principle therefore acts as a common standard for reasoning about how to act, so that when we explain an agent’s behaviour as rational action, we expect that her action will conform to standards that we all share in virtue of having ends. Thus, I contend, in order to explain the rational actions of an individual, marginal utility necessarily appeals to the judgements of a community.

Liu, Xiaozhu. "Paradoxical development: China's early industrialization in the late nineteenth century." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187398.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies China's first industrializing efforts to transform its navigation, cotton textiles and banking in the late nineteenth century, and analyzes the paradoxical roles of the state and culture in achieving development. It argues that successful late development is dependent on state policies that emphasize state-society connectedness and tradition-modernity continuity. In late Qing China, the state-midwifed industrial projects faced both intensive competition from foreign firms and resistance from domestic vested interests. Because key resource factors such as capital, production technology, and management skill were scarce and distributed unevenly across multiple sectors, the state officials had to redirect the resource flows in order to found new industries. The state had to perform an essential function of creative destruction, without which social groups in non-state sectors would be less likely to embrace changes, but the ultimate success of new industries depended on a societal consolidation that redefined the state-society relationship. This study also shows that culture was a double-edged sword with great potential for lubricating industrial transformation. The promoters of development created myths, symbols and beliefs to legitimize their industrializing efforts. They made a constant effort to reinterpret tradition in order to find compatibility between the foreign and domestic systems. The distinctive sectoral paths taken by navigation, cotton textiles and banking represented different patterns of state-society cooperation for achieving development. Each sector had distinct production technologies and product structure, and was endowed with distinct sectoral institutions and other legacies. These endowments constrained choices of every new industry, but it was a combination of structural factors and industry's responsive strategies that explained why some enterprises succeeded while others failed. A project was more likely to succeed if there was greater state-society connectedness and cultural compatibility. Steam navigation was the most successful among the three, followed by cotton textiles. Banking was the least successful.

Mditshwa, Siviwe. "A socio-economic impact analysis of selected national development agency funded projects in the Eastern Cape province." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1012045.

Full text
Abstract:
The South African government cannot in isolation deliver all the community needs as expected. Therefore, the involvement of all the sectors becomes crucial in the fight against poverty, largely due to the fact that the delivery of services (community needs) by the public sector does not balance with the amount of the resources allocated. This implies that government cannot successfully manage to deliver the community needs in isolation. A shared service delivery strategy to support the socio-economic development initiatives towards sustainable shared growth is therefore essential. The Public-Private Partnerships and Public-Public Partnership have emerged as alternative measures or important public policy tools in addressing the ‘shared delivery’ of services to the general public of South Africa. As a result of high levels of poverty experienced by the people of the Eastern Cape, in fact by the larger South African population, major interventions by NGOs, CBOs and other civil organisation are gaining momentum. Likewise, the establishment of the National Development Agency as mandated is also a public policy tool that looks into improving the socio-economic development of the local communities. Such interventions and partnerships therefore have a big role to play in support of the ANC led government to effectively deliver on its mandate, thus ensuring improved citizen’s welfare. Importantly, what triggered the undertaking of this study are the high levels of poverty, poor local economic developments and poor monitoring and evaluation of the funded projects in the Eastern Cape. In this study community and poverty in developing South Africa is well discussed. Attention is drawn to the whole idea of socio-economic development - simultaneously touching on the socio-economic shift in SA. Local Economic Development is also discussed with its LED dimensions, including business developments within the two said districts. The main aim of this study is to establish the extent to which the interventions by National Development Agency ‘Public Entity’ have improved the socio-economic development of the rural local communities in the Amathole and OR Tambo Districts towards sustainable and shared growth. The study includes a conceptual meaning of the public sector in general with its key service delivery role players. The study also includes the conceptual theoretical basis of the socio-economic development with specific reference to South Africa then cascades down to the study areas. Under the same note, a detailed explanation is also given on the nature of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) as a model for improved socio-economic development. Conceptual presentation of the Public-Public Partnership (PPP) for shared service delivery is also alluded to.

Ntlangula, Zininzi. "The role of RDP housing in revitalising the socio-economic environment." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/5268.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of RDP housing cannot be underestimated and it plays a big role in South Africa. It assists those who are less fortunate to afford to buy houses. RDP housing delivery is not only expected to put a roof over people's heads but to change their lives in various ways. RDP housing delivery tackles issues related to social and economic enviroment. In terms of policy documents and surveys, research has shown that it is critical to incorporate RDP housing beneficiaries from planning right up to development stage. Public participation and the involvement of beneficiaries from the planning stage onward assists in determining the basic needs of the community that can be addresed through RDP housing development. This study is about the role of RDP housing in revitalising the socio-economic environment with a specific reference to Second Creek, which is under the jurisdiction of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.

Tooth, Richard James Economics Australian School of Business UNSW. "Relative position and saving behaviour." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Economics, 2006. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/24958.

Full text
Abstract:
There appears to be a growing recognition among economists and other social commentators that people attempt to enhance their relative position (which is commonly described as status) through consumption choices and other behaviour. It has been less common to consider whether attempts to enhance relative position impact on saving behaviour. This thesis makes a number of contributions relating to the impact of relative position on saving behaviour. In this thesis I: - consider why concern for relative position may impact on saving behaviour. I demonstrate, with a simple intertemporal model the surprising result that when people are concerned with relative position, income risk can lead to most people saving less and the rich saving more. - conduct an empirical study to test the importance of relative position on saving behaviour. I find a statistically and economically significant relationship between peer income and saving behaviour consistent with theories that people actively forgo saving to seek to enhance their relative position. I use the data to demonstrate that relative position can help to explain why prior research has consistently found that the rich have higher saving rates. - consider the policy implications of relative position to saving behaviour. I examine the policies, primarily corrective taxation, that have been advocated to address externalities of relative position in a static setting. I find that there are significant issues when these policies are considered in an intertemporal setting. I examine the policy of mandatory saving in addressing distortions caused by relative position and the possibility that concern for relative position improves the effectiveness of mandatory saving policy.

Mtero, Farai. "The informal sector : micro-enterprise activities and livelihoods in Makana Municipality, South Africa." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007706.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the nature and characteristics of the informal sector within the Makana municipal area in South Africa. The focus is on the socio-economic characteristics of the informal sector operatives; operational characteristics of the microenterprises that we studied, such as longevity, employment generation, growth potential, and linkages of the informal sector with the formal sector of the economy. Extensive studies on the informal sector have been conducted in many parts of the world relative to South Africa. The key finding in most of these researches is that the informal sector is highly heterogeneous. These studies provide us with the parameters for analysing the nature and characteristics of the informal sector in the Makana Municipality. The results of the thesis show that the majority of people in Makana Municipality join the informal sector as a result of such push factors as unemployment, retrenchment and the need to survive. While there is evidence of lucrative activities amongst the surveyed enterprises, most of the informal sector micro-enterprises are concentrated in the lower segment of the sector where earnings are very low. Results from this study reveal that employment generation (beyond owner-operator) is very limited. The co-existence of a small number of remunerative activities alongside a large proportion of relatively unproductive activities is not only a sign of restricted economic potential but, most importantly, it points to the heterogeneous nature of the informal sector. Precisely, the informal sector encompasses activities which are different in terms of asset holdings, earnings, etc. From the study, it is also evident that the informal sector micro-enterprises play a crucial role in distributing goods produced in the formal sector. Evidence indicates that these micro-enterprises are Iinked to the formal sector. The idea of a 'second economy' devoid of linkages with the 'first economy' is of limited heuristic value. Thus, the 'second economy' is an extension of the first.

Tessema, Samuel Tilahun. "Competition to attract foreign direct investment through tax incentives as a threat for the realisation of socio-economics in Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/8064.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of the study is to show how the use of tax incentives as means of attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is threatening the realisation of socio-economic rights in Africa. Particular attention is given on how the granting of generous tax incentives can affect the proper and adequate provision of public services and infrastructures by highly reducing government revenue. The research does not intend to analyse the impact of loss of revenue through tax incentives on each and every socio-economic right. Rather the focus is on its general impact on obligations of African states to respect, protect and fulfill socio-economic rights as derived from the major international, regional and national human rights instruments

Abstract:
This research is founded upon three fundamental premises. The first is that good governance is central to human development. The second premise is that the realisation of socio-economic rights is a necessary condition for the attainment of human development. The third premise is that pro-poor growth policies and frameworks are veritable tools through which human development can be delivered and socio-economic rights realised. The research Focuses on the view that human development should be the end of every growth policy regime and good governance the means to such end. Socio-economic rights on the other hand should serve as indicators to the formulation, implementation and the measurement of such policies

Fobosi, Siyabulela Christopher. "Formalisation, informalisation and the labour process within the minibus taxi industry in East London, South Africa." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1012076.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the labour process within the minibus taxi industry in East London, South Africa. This industry is structurally situated within the informal sector or economy but is marked by contradictory processes of formalisation and in-formalisation. Though the taxi industry seems to straddle the formal and informal economies in South Africa, the study is conceptually framed in terms of the informal sector but in a critically-engaged fashion. The very distinction between formal and informal economies, whether in South Africa or elsewhere, is open to dispute; and, even if accepted, there are differing conceptualisations of the relationship between the ‘two’ economies. Also, the conceptual clarity of the term ‘informal economy’ has been subject to scrutiny, given the vast range of activities it is said to incorporate. While the distinction between formal and informal economies may be a useful conceptual starting-point, this thesis demonstrates that it is analytically useful to speak of degrees and forms of formalisation and in-formalisation along a continuum, rather than to dichotomize economies. The thesis therefore analyses in depth the competing and tension-riddled processes of formalisation and in-formalisation in the minibus taxi industry, and with a specific focus on the labour process.

Abstract:
The main objective of this study is to investigate the practical treatment of Unaccompanied Minor Refugees (UMR) in Ghana and South Africa, and to explore whether such treatment is in accordance with existing international norms and standards for the protection of refugee children. The study will focus on the realisation of children’s socio-economic rights in order to measure treatment. This study also seeks to address the obstacles which prevent the full and proper treatment of UMR, and to make recommendations as to how the international community can better regulate the treatment of UMR. In essence, this paper aims to investigate whether there is a discrepancy between the rights of child refugees acknowledged in international law and the situation of UMR in practice, and, if so, how this can be remedied. This paper seeks to show, through the case studies of Ghana and South Africa, that UMR are, to a certain extent, lost in the system

The spirituality of consumption and consumption of spirituality, by Renato de Lima da Costa, is a study of contemporary consumer culture based on the thinking of Gilles Lipovetsky, a French philosopher who proposes to study more specific contemporary issues such as fashion, luxury, consumption habits, morality, among other subjects. The analysis of the author provides elements that allow us to verify the presence of a spirituality of consumption by surrounding the most varied relationships that occur in the universe of multiple offers for purchases conveyed always with promises of comfort, well-being and perpetuation of happiness, as well as motivations and purposes for the consumption in the constant engagements for the purchases of the individuals. This latter aspect is an element of fundamental importance for the understanding of the movements that take place within contemporary consumer markets, as well as the peculiarities of this consumer culture, thus a historical rescue in search of the roots of consumer spirituality is also presented in scope of this text in order to demonstrate in what context a first intuition was given in relation to an element beyond the own functionalities present in the most varied commodities. Finally, after this course, the research also deals with an analysis of a process of consumption of spirituality as a reflection of consumer culture in contemporary times. Thus, it will be possible to realize that individualized religious conduct, post-moralistic ethical values, motivations for religious transit through the dissatisfaction of subjective longings, as well as the emergence of new possibilities of religious experiences, all of them centered on the individual as client to be served, are current trends that reflect the imposition of the new imperatives of consumption life as also present in this sphere of life of individuals

Mtati, Nokuzola Julia. "The impact of crime on the South African economic growth." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1018644.

Full text
Abstract:
Crime in South Africa has been escalating over the past few years. Crime affects all societies in South Africa. It occurs amongst the rich and the poor, in the suburbs as well as in the townships. Serious and violent crimes are reported in most of the national newspapers almost on daily basis. There is no single satisfactory answer as to the causes of crimes and its impact on the economy of South Africa. The aim of this research report is to assess the impact of crime in the South African economy. In order to formulate a conceptual and theoretical framework of the study, growth theories, namely neoclassical growth theory, Harrod-Domar growth model classical growth theory and endogenous growth theory were presented. Although all these growth theories relate to this study as crime cuts-across all sectors of the economy the endogenous growth theory was chosen as a theoretical framework on which to base this study. Endogenous growth theory deals with domestic absorption. Crime interferes with this absorption as it constitutes a cost to the economy. Firms lose profits whilst the opportunity cost of running prisons using a tax payers’ money continues to grow. This study is based on a quantitative research technique, using a vector error correction model (VECM) on a quarterly time series data over a period 2003 to 2011. The variables used to explain variations in economic growth over this period are crime, real interest rates, real exchange rates, unemployment and poverty. The findings of this study suggest that crime exerts a negative impact on economic growth in a long run in South Africa. However, this relationship is not statistically significant both in a short run and a long run. . However, no evidence of short run adjustments between crime and economic growth were found. There is a long run negative relationship between real interest rates and economic growth. This relationship is also statistically significant in a long run but not in a short run. However, the relationship between real interest rates and economic growth is positive in a short run. This can be explained by the fact that high interest rates attract foreign investments causing a rise in economic growth but in a long run high interest rates dampen domestic investments thereby aggravating the unemployment problem. Rising unemployment is likely to lead to increase levels of crime in South Africa. The results also show that unemployment has a negative relationship with economic growth both in the short run and a long run. However this relationship is not statistically significant in a short run but in a long run. Poverty has a negative relationship with economic growth in a short run but a positive relationship in a long run. However, in both instances the relationship between poverty and economic growth is not statistically significant. Real exchange rate has a positive relationship with economic growth in a long run but a negative relationship in a short run. This relationship is statistically significant in a long run but not in a short run. This means that the benefits of a weak currency in South Africa are realised in a long run. The implications of this study with regard to the variable of interest namely crime, is that crime constitutes a cost to the economy of South Africa. The econometric modelling used in this study suggests a negative relationship between crime and economic growth. This means that the problem of crime in South Africa goes beyond just simple counts on a number of offenses. Based on the findings of this study it is recommended that crime prevention is better than cure. Crime prevention should use a wide range of ideas and abilities found throughout the society. Community planning, neighbourhood action, juvenile advocacy, security planning, education and training are some of the ways in which crime actions can be mitigated in South Africa.

Rivers, lakes and streams are the only way people encounter water sources in urban areas. Human endeavours have consequently deteriorated the environmental quality provided by river systems thus rivers are supporting a fraction of their original biodiversity and abundance. Urban streams are highly valuable and sensitive systems which, can be assessed by means of impacts of urban catchment and pathway influences. Many of the problems associated with environmental quality and management of urban watercourses are as a result of poor public perception. Advances in river assessment and management has come about through the recognition that water resource problems involve biological, physical and chemical components and more recently the addition of social and economic aspects. Social public participation is therefore achieved by studying and acting on people’s values, behaviours and perceptions of environmental quality. The main aim of this research was to identify whether a difference in socio-economic status is an influential factor in people’s perception of environmental quality. The objectives of the research were to determine whether the Elsieskraal River has a perceived low environmental relevance and quality (health and aesthetics), to determine what sensitizes people about issues relating to the natural environment and to identify people’s uses and perceptions of the Elsieskraal River corridor and its importance to the enjoyment as a recreational space. The study used a qualitative approach to obtain the data using the focus group technique. The purposive sample of participants from Pinelands and Thornton were the population that this study sought to investigate. Two focus group discussions; one in each study area was conducted. The results of this study found both similarities and differences in people’s perceptions of the Elsieskraal River between the two different socioeconomic urban communities. The perceived observation that the Elsieskraal River was a canal and not a river set the foundation for the envisaged low environmental quality the river so acquired. The majority overall environmental quality scores for the attributes of aquatic life, vegetation and water quality were found to be lower than they were scientifically found to be. Two clear avenues concerning environmental information sourcing and sensitization to the public was found. Politicians and government officials were unreliable to relay environmental information of a trustworthy nature. Community newspapers were a useful tool to present theevidence of information concerning the status of the natural environment especially at a local level. Three themes namely safety, maintenance and facilities and community attachment emerged on the importance of the Elsieskraal River as a recreational space. It is recommended that further studies should examine the perceptions of other similar rivers in the urban environment, both natural and canalised within Cape Town and the greater South Africa. The findings can assist environmental managers, planners and educators identify the gaps between the scientific environmental conditions and what people’s perceived awareness and knowledge about environmental quality are (factual versus perceived). It is also recommended that emphasis and support from local authorities must be given to non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) and adjacent property owners to aid in mobilising people into “ownership of rivers” within their communities to enhance their value and utilisation.

The objective of this study is to assess the contribution of the New Economic Sociology to the Brazilian Business Administration scientific production. Starting with the benefits of interdisciplinarity, the importance of Sociology to Administration is discussed through the contributions of the New Economic Sociology, a knowledge area that uses a sociological perspective to analyze markets. This study evaluated the scientific literature published in journals as well as in Anpad's events between 2006 and 2015 to measure and evaluate how the discipline is being used in the discussions related to management in Brazil. As a result, the general profile of the publications, authors and the thematic areas that are being complemented by discipline are presented, not to mention the study also provides a clearer view of the institutional environment of the research network. The research suggests the area is undergoing a rise in interest. There was a substantial increase in (adjusted) publication volumes, active researchers, number of journals, active academic institutions and in the average number of authors per work, demonstrating an improvement in the permeability of the concepts. However, few universities and researchers were active simultaneously in both five-year periods. The research network appeared to be sparse. Other elements also suggested the topic is poorly institutionalized. The typical profile of the researcher using the New Economic Sociology is dominated by administrators located in the same department. However, the contributions of social scientists were relevant in a number of ways. The analysis showed that New Economic Sociology has contributed to illuminate management issues, especially those related to organizational performance and market analysis. The most frequent disciplines overlapping it were Strategy and Organizational Theory, often making use of the concept of social networks to answer the research questions.

O último capítulo enfoca a subsunção contemporânea do trabalho.
Abstract: This thesis presents an investigation of the relations between the work of resellers and a Brazilian cosmetic company. The current centrality of labour to capitalist accumulation guides the analysis. On the first chapter, the results of fieldwork are presented. The economic and social profile of the saleswomen and their professional path is seen alongside of their relationship with the selling activity based on a definition of different social types. Some aspects of both the production and the distribution of the company are also examined. On chapter two, the debate of informality is updated according to the context of neoliberal policies, and the transformation of labour relations that happened over the past thirty years. The finance-led regime of accumulation is also taken into account. Direct Selling System and female work are analyzed based on this historical context. On chapter three, the work of the saleswomen is analyzed in light of the strength of the company's brand. The brand is understood here as an immaterial form that enables the recognition of the movement of the interest-bearing capital (Marx, 1988) in its relation to contemporary forms of labour exploitation. The analysis of the relation between the finance-led regime of accumulation and labour casualisation is then deepened. On chapter four, the contemporary forms of labour exploitation are examined, and the relation between technological innovations, informal labour and labour casualization are more profoundly investigated. The loss of labour forms to the sphere of consumption is also analyzed here, based on the imbrications between labour and consumption in the activity of the resellers. On the last chapter, the contemporary subordination of labour is discussed. The main aspects of this chapter are the current lack of distinction between labour time and leisure; the contemporary forms of workers subjective involvement; a critique of immaterial theories, especially that of Gorz (2003); the endurance of the value theory (Marx, 1985) in labour exploitation unveiling and comprehension. Finally, the centrality of labour is discussed in a broader perspective; the relation between the resellers' work and the company accumulation is also scrutinized

Abstract:
This DPhil thesis discusses how two divergent risk conceptions, a 'social view' and an 'economic view' of risk, are constructed through inter-expert risk communication. Different and sometimes contradictory concepts of risk are mobilised in regulatory practice, but the origins of these divergent risk conceptions are not extensively studied. This thesis seeks to unpack this divergence. Empirically, I analyse risk communication among experts in the European Union (EU) during the creation of two risk regulation standards. The two case studies, one related to the development of the two-degree target of EU climate policies (the climate case) and the other about the negotiation of the excessive deficit criteria of the Maastricht Treaty (the euro case), can shed light on the relations between risk conceptions and inter-expert risk communication. I argue that through risk communication, an initial 'view' of risk can be entrenched and developed into a paradigmatic 'risk conception'. My analysis uses historical and sociological institutionalism, by focusing on path dependence of risk communication and social construction risk conceptions among EU experts. Through the two case studies, I identify four analytical dimensions of inter-expert risk communication: networks (the institutional setting and relationships between different experts), cultures (the mentalities of experts in relation to discussing risks), dynamics (the actual processes of transmitting and receiving risk messages) and strategies (the rationales supporting the decisions of risk regulation standards). My thematic analysis reveals four key distinct 'features' of social/economic views of risk: expertise (the types of knowledge mobilised), normality (characterising risk as either 'special' or 'routine'), probability (considering risk as either uncertain or calculable) and impact (seeing risk as either negative or positive). I argue that these four features can help explain the construction of risk conceptions, and more broadly, provide an analytical framework for studying how views of risk evolve and interact over time.

The sector of canned goods in the region of Pelotas, in Rio Grande do Sul, came to life at the end of the XIX Century and was consolidated in the 70#s when large companies installed themselves in the area. The 80#s witnessed the closing of many of these factories, due to the supposed #crisis# that hit this field of activity. In the 90#s, the firms which remained, concentrated their invoicing # of the 40 industries that had existed in the previous decade, only 12 reached the productivity level in 2007, without precedent in the field today, responsible for 98% of canned peach production in Brazil. Some of these companies restructured themselves, developed their productive industrial complex, and adopted organizational changes in a movement similar to that seen in different productive chains. Others combined new and old processes, marks that characterize a heterogeneous reorganization, which simultaneously articulates past and present in movement, a context in which public and private institutions, interested in regional development, interact. In the dimension of the working world, the closing of the companies represented intense unemployment in the region of Pelotas, since these firms had been the main economic activity of the region. The business reorganization weakened the position of the workers and labour unions in the field, and collective forms of organization found themselves even more restricted because of this. The players of this network describe these movements in different ways, but invariably indicate intensification in the weakness of their conditions and labour relations, principally in regard to the administration of the business. The attitude of the workers in this context seems to go way beyond a condition of fate. In the interface between industrial and extra-industrial, in the forms of sociability which are established among them, their lives interrelate and the working place becomes the stage of various contestation practices.

________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The research identifies and characterizes the relations of reciprocity and its results on the incubation process offered by universities to solidarity economic enterprises. We consider this process as an educative one, based on reciprocity practices, as it was evidenced by pioneering authors, like the anthropologists Mauss and Lévi-Strauss and the theoreticians of education Piaget and Labelle. It was study the case of Technological Incubator of Popular Cooperatives (ITCP) from the Rio de Janeiro Federal University and, in particular way, their methodology. The research looks for links of symmetrical and anti-symmetrical reciprocity established by the incubation process and its unfolds. The reciprocity relations, which go beyond values of use, can produce and reproduce specific ethical values, which occur mainly because of the consolidation of reciprocity structures. The study concludes that the symmetrical relations of reciprocity are important for the incubation process, because they guarantee the interaction among the workers of the enterprises and the participants of the Incubator. These relations ensure the sharing of knowledge and experiences and contribute for the construction of autonomy and for the organization of the cooperative work. Some important unfolds are, the internal organization of the Incubator and of the enterprises being incubated; the development of governmental actions based on the experience of the ITCP; the inclusion of the solidarity enterprises incubated in protected, cooperative and exchange markets.

Abstract : This research analyzes the printed business journalism coverage and the editorial of Folha de São Paulo on the definition of Selic interest rate by the Monetary Policy Council (Copom) during the first year of Lula Government (2003). The focus of this study is the relation of economic journalism with its sources and the institutional affiliations of these. The survey included a total of 351 news, 285 of these signed by 17 journalists, 44 editions of the Painel S.A (SA Panel) Column, 9 from Repercussão (Repercussion) and 16 unsigned news, which together performed 502 visits to 185 sources affiliated to 95 institutions. It was considered the Copom composition and the set of institutional affiliations of its members in order to identify relationship patterns between public and private sectors. It is taken into account the financial globalization process of the last decades, which meant a reorganization of the global financial system and the emergence of immensely increased powers of financial coordination, with a larger opening and deregulation of markets, which among other implications intensified the concentration of capital, with merges and acquisitions, including media companies. It was observed how the course of Folha de São Paulo group takes part in this process, first through the internal changes that occur in its shareholding structure and the expansion performed both by the formation and incorporation of companies and by strategic associations with other groups of the area, and on the other hand, through the space occupied by journalistic sources affiliated to the financial system. It was found that the Copom monthly decisions throughout 2003 received continued attention of Folha de São Paulo economic journalism, which adopted an editorial position in favor of lowering Selic interest rate, in addition to this, it mobilized a wide range of sources in the economic journalism. The basic identification of these sources revealed a diversity of institutional affiliations. At the same time, a more detailed analysis about the universe of such sources made it possible to observe a clear preference for sources affiliated to the financial system, which is expressed by both the biggest number of affiliations with the financial institutions as well as the number of times they are mobilized. Even though there are polyphony in the financial News, the relative importance of the sources of financial institutions connote the tendency to create convergence between the means of communication and the financial world. The selected methodological procedures include bibliographic and documentary research in addition to Social Network Analysis, using the Unicet 6 program.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Dev.) --University of Limpopo, 2016.
The study seeks to establish whether social cohesion is a factor for the success or failure of an LED project. This process is important as there is a need to understand what are some of the factors that are integral to the functioning of LED projects to the extent of them (the LED projects) serving the intended purpose. There seems to be a general understanding that projects would naturally thrive albeit without proper understanding of the reasons thereof. This study seeks to provide for an understanding on the part of participants in projects as well as to the stakeholders that would support such projects of the probable factors that would lead to the success or failure of projects. This is very important as such factors need consistent consideration. The study focussed only on active participants of a LED projects within the geographical area of Polokwane over the period of the study. These projects were supported by the Polokwane Municipality as well as the Limpopo Department of Agriculture. Within this context the researcher argues that social cohesion is imperative for the success or failure of LED projects. It is also further argued that the projects‟ successes or failures are not solely in economic terms but also on the social bonds that hold together communities or members of projects that have a common goal or objective. A quantitative research method was used to gather data. A random sample of 85 respondents was interviewed by the researcher from both successful and failed projects. The data were analysed using the SPSS software with specific focus on Chi-square analysis. The study found that social cohesion is a factor for the success or failure of an LED project. Further it was established that factors such as education of the respondents play a role. It is observed from the findings that these factors are important for social cohesion to be a factor for success of LED projects. Further, it has been also observed there is an opportunity to compare the influence of education separately as a factor for success against the influence of incubation. However such could be an opportunity for further studies. It has been observed that this study contributes to the understanding of the importance of social cohesion in the implementation of LED projects both those that are stakeholder supported and those that are not. There are lessons to be learned about the importance of this factor over and above the economic practices of the LED processes. This study emphasises the importance of the human and societal elements to the implementation of LED projects that may be overlooked and/or assumed to have a role although not clearly defined. The study seeks to make provision for the fact that stakeholders involved in the implementation of LED projects need to incorporate and weigh the importance of social cohesion, education and incubation as integral components for the success of an LED project over and above invested material resources. These lessons may also be transferable to projects other than LEDs that seeks to understand the success or failure in their implementations.

Abstract : The topic of investments in sport and leisure has been an emerging issue, strengthened by the increasing systematization of public policies that seek to consolidate aspects that influence the well-being of the population in different regions. Research in this field has been legitimized, especially with the availability and distribution of public resources, important to support programs of public policies in this area, in order to contribute to greater democratization of their practices. The analysis of public policies help us to understand the planning and targeting of investments in the specific plan of policies; investment and spending provide an indication of the scope and redistributive character of these therefore imply analyze spending noting which demands or demonstrations are prioritized. From this idea, we analyze spending on sport and recreation in order to launch an issue of reading on policies for sport and leisure, through the study of the expenditures made, focusing on investments made by municipalities of Minas Gerais in the years 2008-2012, correlating them with indexes and indicators measuring human development in the municipalities. From the construction experience of the research methodology used in this paper, we consider relevant point true purpose of publicizing of public spending, and not only publication. So this process of analyzing spending on sport and recreation is also a way of pressuring managers to make their budgets more transparent and technically accessible. That was the principle that guided this study and sent us to the methodological effort to understand the costs and their relationship to the indices that measure human development of the municipalities. In the analysis, we see a variation and the lack of regularity in spending performed, assuming an inconsistency in expenses, indicating the lack of guidelines on public policies for the sector, and on the other, indicating that the expenses incurred tend to cater clientelist policies and selective. It is undeniable that the perception of public spending can be a powerful tool and claim termination by the Company.

This dissertation is focused on the genesis and the changes in the textile-clothing industries of the Alto Vale do Itajaí micro-region from the early 1990s. This is essentially an exercise to evaluate the main social impacts generated by the recent dynamic of this segment, trying to characterize and interpret the constituted constraints of the "Santa Catarina model of development." To this diagnosis has been incorporated a exploration of prospective scenarios to stimulate the search for alternative strategies of industrialization, in the light of the theory of sustainable territoria development. The thesis project was inserted in a Franco-Brazilian interdisciplinary and interinstitutional research on potentials and barriers to sustainable regional development in the state of Santa Catarina, with the support of the CAPES-COFECUB agreement and CNPq. Initially, based on a summary review of relevant theoretical and methodological literature, this dissertation locates the genesis of the textile-clothing segment of the Alto Vale do Itajaí in a period of crisis and economic stagnation of the whole region. A vigorous growth of the segment was found from the beginning of the 1990s, based on the deployment of a set of micro and small enterprises specializing in the manufacture of cloth and jeans. However, production dynamization and significant expansion of the labor market have been carried out with high social and environmental costs, which have not been adequately addressed by Santa Catarina's public opinion. The collected evidences indicate that in areas of planning and management of territorial dynamics of industrialization prevails, even today, a representation of the economic phenomenon of the urban and regional development. The textile-clothing activity, from the social and environmental point of view, is reflected in the territory from its main impacts: the effect of laundry and prints with respect to the use of water and soil resources in a disorderly way; the migration of young farmers to urban activities (industry) and their change in habits and lifestyles in family; degrading working conditions; planting of exotic species on farms instead of conventional agriculture. Furthermore, research has revealed the fragility of synergy relations between companies and institutions (governmental and nongovernmental), a chronic shortage of labor-skilled, low involvement of institutions for research & development and persistence of asymmetry in the relationship of the segment with the industrial park of the Médio Vale do Itajaí. This scenario set out the force of inertia of a productive arrangement that clashes with the needs for a strategic redirection of the planning and management system of Santa Catarina's regional development, given the worsening trend of the global environmental crisis. In other words, what predominates today as a supposedly virtuous system of territorial governance is, in fact, the reproduction of a project of conservative and predatory modernization, with hierarchical and corporative profile, dominated by the big companies lobbying that put in the background the use environmentally prudent and socially inclusive of the natural and cultural heritage of the people of Santa Catarina. Finally, the experiment of territorial prospective has indicated feasible conditions of an alternative system - integrated and participatory - of planning and management development in the long term. Therefore ssesses the existence of institutions and local initiatives that could improve the relationship between economy and environment. It can also be highlighted the local initiatives to encourage sector integration and its coordination with the local problems. Although informal initiatives, they reaffirm the potential viability of an alternative planning and management system of productive activity and its area respectively.

Abstract:
Using anomie theory, in this paper it is argued that the new generation migrant workers (NGMWs) in China are not only receptors under structures, but also a reactive force towards those structures. However, anomie theory has faced theoretical ambiguities, controversies and misunderstandings. It also lacks the power to explain micro-to-macro relationships. For these reasons, anomie theory is first clarified and refined in this study based on its classical roots. It is then further developed by introducing the concept of social momentum to mend its theoretical lacuna. It is argued that anomie naturally reflects structural discoordination at the macro level, and that deviance and normlessness, although typically seen as indicators of anomie, are only its symptomatic presentations. Furthermore, social momentum, determined by the quantity, solidarity and modes of adaption, reveals the capacity of a social category to influence structural relationships. This study demonstrates that China entered a comparatively anomic age after its economic reform. The NGMWs can be considered as a potential antithesis to anomie in China, as implied by certain qualities of their uniqueness indicated in earlier studies. The NGMWs’ social momentum is analysed according to a field study carried out by the author in 2015 in Shanghai and the 2011 Chinese Social Survey (CSS 2011). The data from the survey and study are used to discuss whether the NGMWs will help to remedy anomie. The findings show that (1) the NGMWs’ social momentum is strong but segmental and fragile due to the primary level solidarity of them, i.e., they lack a strong identity, and (2) the directions of their social momentum can be narrowed to two undetermined modes. The NGMWs tend to aggravate the symptoms of anomie, as they are weakly attached to cultural norms. However, they have an uncertain and not yet fully formed effect on the essence of anomie.

Abstract:
This PhD thesis aims to analyse work activities with multi-problematic families in the context of court proceedings, namely in situation where abusive behaviours acted out by parents against children cause the activation of the Juvenile Court. The first part of the thesis starts with an explanation about the evolution of Italian Juvenile law, with particular reference to legislative measures and interventions related to three areas of competence of the Juvenile Court. This is followed by a reconstruction of the main changes of the services and the actions through which the welfare system, over the years, has faced the problems of childhood and adolescence. In the second part there shall be a review about main studies and researches which have characterized the theoretical debate on multi-problematic families and work activities in the context of court proceeding. Attention is particularly directed to family groups that present chronic difficulties in several dimension of the life (financial hardship, occupational instability, inadequate parental nurturance, difficulties in school expressed by children) which attract the resources of a wide network of services and workers. The third and final part of the thesis reports the results of a qualitative analysis realized with the aim to explore the issue of chronic care in the specific context of child protection. More precisely, the work has attempted to highlight the factors that, in the relationship built by professionals and family, contribute to create a stalemate, in which many interventions implemented by services, also at the economic level, result ineffective in order to improve the family and child’s life conditions. This analysis has been realized through the study of some case-works, relevant to the question explored, made available by social workers of the territorial services of the Marche and Lombardia. This work included two types of operations: firstly, the examination of the social, psychological and judicial documentation contained in the file relating to each case-work; secondly, the detection of personal reflections, however inherent to the case, expressed by the social worker who has or has had its management. In order to proceed to this operation, it is designed a track of semi-structured interview, where questions have been grouped into four areas, which correspond to the dimensions considered decisive in relation to the chronic character that assume a case of child protection. The reference is to the operator’s theoretical and methodological framework, the relational, economic and social aspects of family, the organizational context of service of belonging, the approaches and decisions of the Juvenile Court.

Abstract:
The second half of the twentieth century was a period of structural change in Brazil, beginning with the process of industrialization, which resulted in social and economic transformations, such as urbanization and modernization of the main cities of the country, the migration of rural population to cities, the emergence of new sectors in the economy, increasing jobs and income, etc.. But what draws the most attention is the reconfiguration of the profile of agents in economic spheres, from the 60s, which were sourced from family groups that increase in income, abruptly, and subsequently gained social recognition and acted only the sphere (economic), unlike the previous economic group, which conciliated activities in political and economic spheres. Thus, we aim to analyze, how was the formation of this second set of entrepreneurs in reality distinct, organized around family businesses, which are designed economically in the context in which the goods and services sector experienced the initiation and expansion "supermercadismo" in Brazil, from the 50s Therefore, we examine the political-economic context and illustrate the rise of entrepreneurial families through the formation of three supermarket chains: Paes Mendonça S / a, Bompreço (both family Paes Mendonça) and GBarbosa. The survey pointed out that the emergence of family groups in economic rise was a result of its investments in the grocery business, which received incentives from the federal government, creating a structure that favored their growth, however, went beyond, to show the weight of the model family business, since the key features needed in this economic sphere were incorporated into the family capital, thanks to the investments of the household members.

The aim of this study is analyze the derived problems of the relationship between conservationist groups and the communities commonly named “traditional” from the public policy-making developed inside the Brazilian non-governmental sector. The focus is to understand how non-governmental organizations, affiliated to the ethno conservation theoretical postulate, formulate the establishment strategies of this model to execute in the conservation units, inside the traditional communities where they perform their functions. This study intends to demonstrate the transforming operation ways used by conservationist agents on “traditional” groups from power relationships and the resulting operation strategies. Therefore, three main objectives guided the course of this research: (1) the establishment of an ethno conservation theoretical discussion about its fundaments and constitutive principles as well as an analysis of the conceptions and concepts that base it. (2) the analysis of the establishment model on participative administration of the Vitória Amazônica Foundation, a non-governmental organization, (ONG, by its initials in Portuguese) experienced inside the river margin living population in the conservation unit located in the Jaú National Park in the Amazonas State; and (3) find the linkage between theoretical postulates and practice, constitutive elements of ethno conservation opportunities.

Abstract:

Oi, Katsuya. "Understanding the Role of Patient Activation in the Association between Patient Socio-Economic Demographics and Patient Experience." PDXScholar, 2012. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/467.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on the association between patient characteristics, which include both demographic and contextual factors, and patients' experiences with health care. The pre-existing literature provides rich information about patients' various demographics related to patient experience. Despite the abundance of empirical evidence showing that patients' demographics do affect how they perceive their health care. However, there is little to no empirical knowledge explaining the significance of such factors. As the existing literature points out the need for taking into contextual factors such as patient's beliefs, attitudes, skills that are pertinent to dealing with health care, my study proposes patient activation as such a contextual factor that explains the association between patient demographics and patient experience. Findings suggest that patient activation is a strong predictor of two patient experience measures: patients' rating of doctor-patient communication and their self-reported difficulties in getting needed care. However, it is also observed that the mediating effects of patient activation vary by the two dimensions of patient experiences. Though this study demonstrates that promoting patient activation may be able to normalize how patients report the quality of doctor-patient interaction, further research is needed to address access to care issues.

Sischarenco, Elena. "Italian entrepreneurs of the construction business in a time of economic recession : ideas, strategies and movements." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/11088.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is based on an ethnographic study of entrepreneurs of the construction business in Lombardy, Northern Italy. The aim is to gain some understanding of this business, of entrepreneurialism, and of individuals in a non-stereotypical light through a full and complex account of their daily lives. The aim is to reveal the thoughts, actions and strategies of particular local actors in their everyday contingency and contradictoriness. No attempt is made to simplify the complexity of their understandings and practices for the sake of producing a single encompassing and consistent image. Many similarities were found between the practices of entrepreneurialism and those of the discipline of anthropology. Knowledge and information are constantly sought after but are recognised as emerging in unexpected places and times and as being socially negotiated. Apprenticeship is often used as a methodology, and learning often happens through experience. Contextual application of knowledge is seen as essential. In order to exchange information and knowledge, to collaborate with other businessmen or to simply get a job, trust is fundamental and constantly negotiated. Personal relationships and trust become particularly important in an uncertain market situation, as ways to face risk. Trust is acquired slowly and accorded contextually, through face-to-face interaction and cultivated relationships, but also through positive recommendations or simply a feeling of sympathy. Knowledge, apprenticeship, trust and risk are key themes of the thesis. The blurred borders between the distinct individual personalities of my informants and their collective identities and commonalities are also discussed. The personality of an entrepreneur is seen as ideally complex, in which many (possibly contradictory) characteristics can be expected to be present, but also ideally balanced, each manifesting itself in specific situations. The ethnography also explores the fragility of the entrepreneur, in apparent contradiction to their strong and charismatic personalities. It is seen to be despite and because of their positions of power that they also feel vulnerable: their discourse is imbued with their fears for their businesses in a difficult period of economic crisis. Finally, through a ubiquitous desire to control markets and the future, we also encounter forms of corruption; corruption that is often condemned verbally but nevertheless is present in the business world and amplified by public and media discourses. The mechanisms by which work that is put out to tender is subject to possible manipulation are examined, and the ideas of the entrepreneurs about these practices are described—again demonstrating how thoughts and practices are often self-contradictory in their contextual relevance and application.

Tawe, Ngamale Emmanuel. "The making of business news in Africa: a case study of Cameroon Tribune newspaper." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002942.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the emergence of business journalism as a genre within the broad spectrum of news reporting, most of the scholarly works into its development have focused on growth in the western (that is developed) world. This indicates that very limited research has been done in the field of business journalism in the developing economies. Thus there exist gaps in understanding the practice of business journalism in Africa and part of this is rooted in how the practice is defined. This study aims to shed light on the practice of business journalism in this African context. It explores the onset and development of business journalism and its evolution in Africa. The main focus in this case study was to understand the definition of business news in the specific context of the Cameroon Tribune. Individual in-depth interviews were used as the main (primary) data collection method along with observation and cursory reading as complementary (secondary) methods. This study is influenced by the sociology of news production which foregrounds theoretical frames such as news construction and gatekeeping. Findings from this study reveal that business news at the Cameroon Tribune is elitist, essentially defined around personality and, is in the most part, development news. Additional findings indicate that the absence of any editorial guidelines leaves most reporters secondguessing how to please management with socialised values mostly acquired through peer learning. In conclusion, this study advances the necessity for the Africanisation of business news. This would entail reporting financial, economic, consumer, and corporate affairs, from a vocabulary and composition context that unveils much exchange taking place in the lives of many Africans.
