Abstract:
This article examines the philosophy of economic of the Ancient Greece. Philosophical thought of the classics of ancient philosophy raises value and moral-ethnical questions in economic sphere and seeks the ways for their solution. The subject of this research is the stance on economic goods of the ancient society. The goal consists in description of the economic ideas of Xenophon, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Modern philosophical studies do not give due attention to the philosophy of economics, which is not fair, since the discipline “Philosophy of Economics” is aimed primarily at clarification of the essence of philosophical problems of economics, substantiation of the need for scientific cognition of economic relations and the underlying socioeconomic laws. The novelty lies in carrying out a referential overview of philosophical concepts that reflect economic ideas in Ancient Greek philosophy of the classical period. The prerequisites of economic ideas within the system of philosophical knowledge reveal and substantiate two these: inseparability of economic knowledge from ethics and politics, and the regards household management as an art. Economic teachings can be found in works of many Ancient Eastern, Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman philosophers; however, the textbooks do not usually include the ancient economic thought into the general course. The author believes that the fundamentals of economics established namely in this era, and this fact cannot be wiped out of history. The philosophical understanding of worldview and scientific fundamentals, knowledge of economics and economic system as a whole, including everything related to the economy, its place in natural world, society and human culture is very important and should be studied in universities.

Abstract:
Greece has experienced rapid growth in immigrant and refugee populations since 1990. Although most are immigrants from Albania and throughout the Balkan region, some immigrant and refugee groups arriving in Greece also come from the former Soviet Union, Southeast Asia and Africa. Some of these newcomers have started small businesses in their quest to become economically self-sufficient, serve the consumer needs of fellow newcomers, and integrate into community life. The purpose of this research is two-fold: to review the extant literature on social and economic factors influencing immigrant entrepreneurship in Greece, and to determine characteristics and business profiles of Albanian immigrant-owned small businesses within the municipality of Attiki — the location of Athens, Greece's capital city and largest urban center.

Abstract:
The EU National Recovery and Resilience Plan "Greece 2.0" includes, among other priorities, a framework to promote and reform the health system, with a focus on digitalization of health and the use of information technology applications. Greece 2.0 may offer a chance to address the current scarcity of high-quality, reliable data sources, which is limiting the spread and impact of health economics and outcomes research (HEOR). We also suspect that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in HEOR will play an important role in Greece's health-care reform and that it will be critical for making real-world data-driven decisions, reducing policy uncertainty. Greece has a once-in-a-lifetime chance to start from scratch and potentially build data-centric AI systems that prioritise data quality over quantity and are built on scalable, flexible, and governable data collection. This commentary explains and critically considers the significance of developing and funding an innovative plan for using AI in HEOR as part of the Greece 2.0 framework. It also discusses ethical issues and the larger role of HEOR in health-care reform.

Skrvelis, Efharis. "Industrial restructuring and the State in Greece : national developments within an international setting." Thesis, Durham University, 1990. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/6219/.

Full text
Abstract:
The conceptual premise of the present thesis is that the international restructuring of industrial capitalist production is actualized within specific national social contexts and at an individual enterprise level. A very fundamental dimensionof the ongoing process of global integration of production is the way the national setting of the firm's operations reflects and adapts to the changing international environment. Within this framework, two central issues are being addressed: (a) How the national and international settings interact and interpenetrate at a firm level, and(b) What the mediating effect of the state is in this process as a regulator of the industrial crisis nationally. These issues are concretely explored in the case of the Greek state and its involvement in the process of capitalist accumulation. The main argument of the thesis is that increasingly since the recession, and especially with the accentuation of the crisis in the 1980s, the Greek state has assumed the pivotal role in sustaining the nationally-based industries in their process of restructuring along lines defined by international developments. The empirical investigation exposes the ways in which the Greek state has crucially shaped this process through direct and indirect means of public sector intervention and through its subsidization policy for industrial and regional development. Case studies of individual firms highlight the ways in which the crisis of over accumulation is experienced as an intensification of competition, and provide insights as to the variety of ways in which the nationally based firm attempts to adjust and integrate to a changing international environment.

Vagionis, Nikolaos G. "Regional development in Greece : an evaluation of the effectiveness of the Industrial Areas Programme." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1994. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1331/.

Full text
Abstract:
This Thesis is concerned with the broad area of the evaluation of regional development policy. The Thesis provides the theoretical context and contributes to evaluation of policies based on provision of organised industrial infrastructure and support systems to national peripheries. It mainly focuses on the Industrial Areas Programme in Greece. The purpose of the research is to measure the effectiveness of the Programme as a lever for regional economic development. Specific interest is paid to the effects of the policy on the regional productivity and the necessity for technological advancement. Basic characteristics, the administrative structure of the country and the setting for the regional development problem are presented early in the Thesis. The institutional and legal framework for development and the emergence of the Industrial Areas Programme follow. In the theoretical part an analysis of the range of regional development theories and their connection with the Industrial Areas Programme is made. This is followed by more recent theories of development based on the implementation of modern technology and the conditions needed for this. An analysis of regional productivity is undertaken utilising the total factor productivity methodology. A productivity typology emerges and first linkages are made to the Industrial Areas Programme. The typology then becomes the base for a field study that surveyed the administration of the Industrial Areas of Greece and firms established therein. Information collected includes the range, infrastructure and facilities of these projects, the technological levels of the participant firms and the efforts made to advance such levels. The survey provides a most useful attitudinal framework for the evaluation of the Programme's effectiveness. Finally, a multi-faceted evaluation is made based first on analysis of employment growth and second on monetary flows in the form of a cost-benefit analysis. The latter provides a generalised methodology, utilising both a pay-back and a full-life evaluation procedure. Analyses in general ascribe some positive effects of the policy but of variable intensity across the projects. The final part resumes the theoretical evaluation, outlines the empirical measurements and findings and proceeds to discuss the policy implications of the Thesis.

The economic basis of democracy in Europe: structural economic change, inequality and the depoliticization of economic policymaking. Royal Institute of International Affairs, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55317/9781784135362.

Full text
Abstract:
- To understand contemporary challenges to European democracy, it is crucial to look beyond the surface of politics and consider the deeper relationship between democracy and the economy. Instead of focusing exclusively on the rise of ‘populism’, it is necessary to acknowledge the multiplicity of threats to European democracy, in particular those arising from the structure of European economies and economic policymaking. - Understanding these weaknesses in the functioning of European democracies is crucial to an effective approach to future economic transformations, in particular the green transition, but also for dealing effectively and equitably with challenges such as higher inflation. It is important that the relevant policy changes and responses are democratically legitimate and do not foster the kind of political backlash that previous economic transformations did. - Over the past 40 years, economic inequality – ranging from income inequality to discrepancies in wealth and economic security – has widened throughout developed economies. In turn, these developments have generated increasing political inequality, as economic policymaking has served the interests of the well-off. - Democratic systems have also been made less responsive to electorates through the ‘depoliticization’ of policymaking, in particular economic policy, as a result of its insulation from national-level democratic scrutiny. The expansion of technocratic modes of governance – notably through independent central banks and EU-level institutions – has in many cases entrenched the policy preferences of specific groups in institutions removed from direct democratic control. - As this depoliticization has to a large extent made democratic contestation over economic policy redundant, politics has increasingly been polarized around ‘cultural’ questions. But such a focus on culture is unlikely to address the inequalities behind the dysfunction of democracies in Europe. - Strengthening European democracy requires a ‘repoliticization’ of economic policymaking, including both fiscal and monetary policymaking. In the specific context of the EU, this would mean opening up more policy space for national decision-makers and parliaments – in particular by giving them a more influential role in fiscal policy, and by making monetary policy more democratic.
