Abstract:
Sovereign debt crises involve debt restructurings characterized by a mix of face value haircuts and maturity extensions. The prevalence of maturity extensions has been hard to reconcile with economic theory. We develop a model of endogenous debt restructuring that captures key facts of sovereign debt and restructuring episodes. While debt dilution pushes for negative maturity extensions, three factors are important in overcoming the effects of dilution and generating maturity extensions upon restructurings: income recovery after default, credit exclusion after restructuring, and regulatory costs of book value haircuts. We employ dynamic discrete choice methods that allow for smoother decision rules, rendering the problem tractable. (JEL E44, F34, F41, H63)

Towers, George William. "Colonia formation and economic restructuring in El Paso, Texas." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185413.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, both global economic restructuring and the economic, political, and social implications of the urban landscape have been at the forefront of geographical inquiry. This dissertation links these two levels of analysis in an examination of industrial restructuring and the colonia labor force in El Paso. El Paso's economic role has been dramatically restructured. Once a center for natural resource extraction, the city is now an assembly site for labor intensive manufacturing activities. Data from a survey of 173 colonia households provide information regarding the colonia labor force. The low cost of housing and the malleability of colonias household structure allows colonia residents to accept minimal incomes and endure high rates of unemployment. In the colonias, a labor force characterized by its relative powerlessness in the American economy is created. The formation of the colonias is consonant with the restructuring of El Paso's economy.

Skrvelis, Efharis. "Industrial restructuring and the State in Greece : national developments within an international setting." Thesis, Durham University, 1990. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/6219/.

Full text
Abstract:
The conceptual premise of the present thesis is that the international restructuring of industrial capitalist production is actualized within specific national social contexts and at an individual enterprise level. A very fundamental dimensionof the ongoing process of global integration of production is the way the national setting of the firm's operations reflects and adapts to the changing international environment. Within this framework, two central issues are being addressed: (a) How the national and international settings interact and interpenetrate at a firm level, and(b) What the mediating effect of the state is in this process as a regulator of the industrial crisis nationally. These issues are concretely explored in the case of the Greek state and its involvement in the process of capitalist accumulation. The main argument of the thesis is that increasingly since the recession, and especially with the accentuation of the crisis in the 1980s, the Greek state has assumed the pivotal role in sustaining the nationally-based industries in their process of restructuring along lines defined by international developments. The empirical investigation exposes the ways in which the Greek state has crucially shaped this process through direct and indirect means of public sector intervention and through its subsidization policy for industrial and regional development. Case studies of individual firms highlight the ways in which the crisis of over accumulation is experienced as an intensification of competition, and provide insights as to the variety of ways in which the nationally based firm attempts to adjust and integrate to a changing international environment.

Abstract:
Because of unexpected changes in economic situations, capital stock companies that can carry their economic entities may be faced with danger to stop their activity because of they cannot afford to pay promptly paid debts. This danger threatens the workers who are faced with the situation of being unable to receive their money as much as debtors. This threat effects legal and national economy. In the situations like this, providing them to continue their economic lifes with restructuring the capital stock companies that have an opportunity to continue their economic entity, is to the advantage of everybody. Restructuring of capital stock companies and cooperatives with compromise way,is an institution that is accepted in Turkish law, in 2003. This institution based on the thought of providing to continue their activities in the situation of saving this company is possible, instead of deciding bankruptcy of company that is improved in last years in the world and is in financial straits. Capital stock company or cooperative that is in financial straits compose with majority of creditors who have an amount of credits that are said in law, about restructuring debts. System works under the surveillance of court and acceptance or refuse require interference of judicial body. Under this heading, process of delaying bankruptcy, conditions and the way of practising will be explained.

Full text
Abstract:
Considering the performance of growth, it is observed that the Central Asian Turkish republics achieved their income levels of 1991, the year they gained political independence, very lately as compared to the other transition economies. It is argued that those factors such as enterprise restructuring and insufficient political rights and individual freedoms came into play for their failure. Thus, it can be said that reflections which are described as economic growth flourishes privately from the lack of entrepreneurship, and also lack of entrepreneurship stems mostly from insufficient libertarian structures. In this paper, enterprise restructuring and price liberalization values published periodically by European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the indicators of political rights and civil liberties published by Freedom House are taken into consideration, and the effects of these on economic growth and/or on human development as a much comprehensive indicator are investigated. In this perspective, instead of the effects of quantitative variables, the effects of four important qualitative variables on Central Asian Republics’ growth/human development are studied.

Abstract:
An important restructuring of Polish electric power system is required. It should result in electric power capacity development, thermodynamic and economic efficiency increase, environment pollution reduction. These are two low investment ways of performing those goals: combined cycle and cogeneration. The problem is similar in most of former centrally planned economies (Central and Eastern Europe).

Full text
Abstract:
Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) are important but little studied financial actors that control over $3.5 trillion in gross assets and over 500,000 properties in the U.S. Yet they have been largely ignored because tax rules define them as ‘passive investors.’ The evidence in this report shows that they are actually financial actors that aggressively buy up property assets and manage them to extract wealth at taxpayers’ expense. This study identifies the powerful impact that REITs, as owners of the real estate that houses productive enterprises, have had on operating companies and on the US economy more generally. It draws on case study evidence from markets where REITs have a major presence – nursing homes, hospitals, and hotels. The tax treatment of REITs has facilitated a growing and worrying influence on health care markets in particular at taxpayer expense.
