Abstract:
AbstractWhen looking at the increase of tourism in a destination, it can be said that tourism is a valuable part of the economy. The proposal offered by today’s competitive paradigm: that higher the number of tourists visiting a city, the higher the income, sounds good at first. The increased number of tourist arrivals gives the appearance of increasing desirability of the city. Parallel with the increased tourism activities, new buildings, new lifestyles, foreign capital and new socio-economic relationships appear rapidly and replace the traditional ones. However, there will be a huge amount of social, cultural, economic and environmental problems faced by the local people as well as the tourists the city. Tourism paradox is the name given to the phenomenon where tourism industry destroys natural and cultural environment in a destination that is necessary for tourism activities. On the other hand the balance, which does not change and disturbs the social and economic relations at the destination is called “tourism equinox”. Therefore, spatial reorganization and urban regeneration play a crucial role for the marketing of cities and this transformation action affects all infrastructure facilities, restorations of old buildings, reorganization of historical zones, and revitalizing the architectural style of the cities. New projects and approaches to solve the problems caused by the growth of urban populations and to establish healthy sustainable tourism destinations are becoming more important than ever. Tourism detox is a treatment that is intended to remove harmful substances from these destinations. This paper investigates the influence of tourism paradox and tourism equinox on urban environments in relation to tourism activities and the protection of natural and cultural resources with the help of tourism detox. It primarily relies on qualitative research to understand the main futures of tourism paradox, equinox and detox taking the physical and environmental aspects of urban environments into consideration. As research methodology a literature review and the sources of secondary data were used.

Abstract:
Disaster is one of the main threats to tourism around the world. There are various kinds of disasters, ranging from terrorist attacks; social, cultural and political issues; disease outbreaks, and natural phenomena (floods, landslides, tsunamis, earthquakes and storms). One of the disasters being experienced by all tourism managers in West Sumatera is earthquakes. Disasters can occur and threaten the sustainability of a tourist attraction. The threat of disaster has an impact on tourist visits, so an effort is needed to prepare tourism managers to deal with it. The tourism industry is an economic activity that is highly dependent on image, when a tourist attraction fails to face a disaster, tourists are reluctant to visit the place. The methods used are interviews, observations, and literature studies that can help answer research questions. The key informants in this study were members of the tourism management in West Sumatra Province. The results showed that each tourist destination has a different threat of disaster from other areas, so the response required by the manager is also different. In the case of the earthquake, the response to the disaster cannot be overcome by all tourist destination managers, all experiencing the same conditions. Developed and developing tourist destinations need the same amount of time to deal with this disaster. The recommendation of this study is the importance of understanding disaster response by all tourist destination managers, so that the required recovery period is not too long, and tourism can return to its normal operation.

Tourism is one of the most important branches of society in many countries of the world. Today its development has taken an important impetus for the development of many societies which really accept tourism as a very important economic activity. Many places have changed the physiognomy of the landscape, giving importance to the development of this activity. It can rightly be said that many countries have received the epithet of developed countries because of the tourist destinations they have. In this way, the Republic of Kosovo, even though it is a young state, has at its disposal important potential values which really represent a tourist attraction. Although they are still in the process of developing and improving tourism which will be in function of the successful tourist offer. In order to develop successful tourism offers, potential values must be made available which will be used as a tourist attraction which is available for tourism development. And with this the overall economic development which affects the overall development of the country. The Republic of Kosovo has potential values which are useful for the development of the tourism product. This is best reflected around Rugova, respectively in Boge where we have a large frequency of different nationalities of tourists.

Abstract:
Abstract Tourism has been a determining factor in the economic growth of Hungary recently and it will continue to have a significant role in the future development of the country. Although Hungary has great potentials in tourism sector, it is concentrated only on a few places of the country at present, especially in the capital, Budapest. While tourism has about 10% share in the national GDP production, most of it is generated in the capital. In addition, to the center of the country, there are only a few places that are really known by foreign tourists and thus are able to attract crowds. Such places are Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Europe; and the city of Debrecen, the second largest city in the country, with its surroundings and several thermal baths. The aim of our paper is to analyze the tendencies of Hungarian tourism, focusing on the festivals, and to follow the changes of the tourism strategies, as well as the direct and indirect effects of the development of the tourism industry on the economic growth of the country. In order to prepare our study, we have collected information on tourism from the Central Statistical Office, from the organizers of the different festivals throughout the country and from the National Tourism Office. Based on our research, we intend to draw consequences on the sector and define recommendations for further developments, because we believe that festivals can be the solution for the sustainable economic and social development of several rural areas, providing income for a huge part of population in the countryside.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to indicate the role and importance of the gmina as a special institution of the Polish tourism system in shaping the local tourism policy of the area. The article presents the concept and objectives of tourism policy, and describes the various entities of tourism policy in Poland and their tasks. Against this background, the article captures the gmina's tasks in the sphere of tourism together with the instruments of tourism policy that are at its disposal. The article uses a descriptive and qualitative analysis method that allowed to identify the role of the gmina in the tourism system in Poland. The analysis includes literature in the field of economic sciences, based additionally on legal acts related to the discussed issue. As an institution of the tourism system, the gmina has the task of satisfying the needs of the local community and stimulating local development, thanks to which it plays an important role in shaping the local tourism policy. The gmina has a wide range of activities on the local tourist economy. It should be emphasized that this is not an individual task of the gmina, although there is no doubt that it has a wide range of opportunities to influence this sphere of social and economic life. Tourism policy should be undertaken and implemented in cooperation with private sector entities conducting tourist activity, but also entities from outside the tourism industry (so-called paratourism entities) and their organizations and associations. Tourism policy should also be implemented together with other local government units, the area of which is covered by an initiative in the field of tourism development, including also higher-level entities (such as poviats and voivodships), as well as with local and regional tourist organizations and other non-governmental organizations.

This study proposes an asymmetric panel causality test to analyze the relationship between tourist arrivals and economic growth. To this end, annual data over the period 1995–2017 are examined for the G10 countries. The findings demonstrate that the relationship between tourism and economic growth varies according to positive and negative shocks. In terms of positive shocks, tourism development causes economic growth. The study also finds a bidirectional causality relationship between the negative shocks of the variables. Therefore, positive developments in tourism contribute to economic growth, while negative events in tourism impede growth. In sum, tourism is strongly linked to economic activities in G10 countries, and thus policymakers should attach importance to the tourism sector in order to support sustainable development.

Abstract:
Ecotourism and environmental balance is a new phenomenon aimed to research, study and meditate in nature, flora and fauna and the provision of human comfort. Ecotourism is the only way to maximize the economic, environmental and social benefits of tourism. The main problem is represented in the difficulty of balancing the preservation of eco-tourism sites with the process of attracting tourists to eco-tourism sites.A number of hypotheses have been developed, the most important of which are: There is no statistically significant negative impact of tourist on tourist sites. The study concluded a number of results and the most important of these results is that the tourist has a negative impact on eco-tourism sites, represented by tourist's cutting trees, and dumping waste and dirt in streets which is an uncivilized act and harmful to the environment. The study has also shown that tourists influence the eco-tourism sites since eco-tourism requires an environmental awareness, and the tourist should be aware that the protection of touristic sites is mandatory for everyone. The tourist's awareness has a great role in preserving the environment, so the educated tourist is necessary to preserve the eco-tourism sites. The study has a set of recommendations, the most important of these recommendations:To increase the awareness of tourists about the importance of the environment and maintaining it by using leaflets that explain the importance of the environment for tourism,To intensify the penalties and legal procedures against the attacks on eco-tourism sites, and to modify laws and regulations in order to promote touristic services.

The presented thesis deals with the issue of tourism in the European Union with emphasis on its economic importance, deployment and current trends that can be identified in this sector. Its aim is to assess the issue of tourism in the EU from a different perspective than it is usual in the literature devoted to this topic, and try to find answers to several questions, including whether the economic importance of tourism is really as great within the EU as it is often attributed to this sector, or how tourism is deployed in the EU. The basis for answering these and other questions is the analysis of a number of indicators over the last two decades. In terms of current trends in tourism, attention is paid to trends in demand and supply and the issue of sustainable tourism development.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the relationship between tourism policy and economic growth. Primarily it evaluates the effects of specialising in tourism on the growth performance of small economies and in particular the effects of tourism specialisation based on natural resources. A secondary but related question is how do changes in the quality of natural resources affect the relationship between specialisation and growth? These questions are considered in the framework defined by recent literature on endogenous growth theory [EG]. Consider a two-sector economy, where growth is driven by the accumulation of sector-specific human capital. The two sectors differ in their associated rates of potential learning. If the low- (no-) learning sector is defined as Tourism and the other as Manufacturing, the condition for balanced growth, under complete specialisation (i.e., equal per capita growth rate in both countries), is the presence of homothetic preferences are those spelled out in Lucas (1988). This approach provides a rather promising outlook for economies characterised by a comparative advantage in the tourist sector - as long as the elasticity of substitution between tourism and other goods, produced under decreasing marginal costs, is low. However, this result is based on a characterisation of the demand side that ignores an important feature of the market for tourist services: the income elasticity of the tourist may be other than one. To take account of a non-unitary income elasticity, the EG conditions for balanced growth should be redefined under a non-(quasi) homothetic utility function. After presenting the model, two empirical analyses, using different techniques, are provided. If consumers allocate a constant share of their (increasing) income toward financing their holidays and two, different types of tourist goods exist - one based on natural resources and the other on activities unrelated to natural resources and supplied at decreasing marginal costs - then a reduction in the quality of a country's natural resources may weaken the capacity of the country's tourist sector to retain a non-decreasing share of the market. This idea is based on the hypothesis that the two tourist goods are vertically differentiated. Quality, however, depends on the rate of exploitation. Lowering the quality lessens the value of the luxury good attached to the resource-based good. This framework should allow for a description of the relationship between the rate of exploitation of natural resources and the conditions which allow economies specialising in tourism to reach a balanced growth path, in a market where more than one tourist good is offered.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since independence in the early 1950's, Africa's overall economic performance compared very unfavourably with those of other regions of the developing world mainly because it attained political independence as a fragmented continent. From this time, the vision of African leaders has been that of regional integration and the creation of the African common market. The vision of a common market which unites Africa's mostly small and fragmented economies would lead to economies of scale, thereby making African countries more competitive. That vision however, has been clouded by the devastation of war, both civil and territorial and corruption which drains the state. Therefore, the importance of regional economic integration is pertinent and more so, the role of Regional Economic Communities as integrative institutions. The African Union, the main institution for political, economic and social integration established the African Economic Community whose main role is to facilitate the regional economic integration process in Africa. Africa's RECs have been designated by the Abuja Treaty as the building blocks for integration and the eventual creation of an African Economic Community. The Abuja Treaty and the Constitutive Act of the African Union provides for the coordination and harmonization of the policies of the Regional Economic Communities. One of the main challenges confronting Africa in its quest for full integration is the rationalisation of regional economic communities. The RECs with their treaties, protocols and agendas are logical institutions to jumpstart Africa's integration. The African Union recognises eight Regional Economic Communities, but the African continent has fourteen inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), all of which are working on regional integration issues. The RECs have had some successes but have not met their objectives of greater production. The RECs need to be revived and the first thing would be to rationalise their structure and their interactions with national governments. Rationalisation has benefits and costs and rationalisation efforts should focus on efficiency and effectiveness. Ultimately, rationalisation would allow Africa to attain the full benefits of integration, particularly growth for trade within and outside Africa. Regional Economic Communities are viewed as pillars of continental integration by the African Union. The strategy of economic emancipation must denote economic development for all African people including grass roots level and there is no doubt that significant challenges exist and must be addressed.

Abstract:
The attention drawn towards tourism can often be misconstrued and underestimated duly to the difficulty of composing a definition that can be straightforward. Tourism as a sector is becoming more prominent globally, influencing social and economic sectors upon nations and regions. Hence, this research paper draws its attention to one of the developing world’s most dynamic economies where tourism plays a huge role – Thailand. The primary purpose of this study was to research the relationship between tourism in Thailand and economic growth by analysing the magnitude of effect. Simultaneously, investigating the contribution from the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) member states as our secondary focus. Our contribution to this field of research is the unique perspective of using monthly data instead of annual. The natural choice is to use Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a measure of economic growth; however, it is only available on a quarterly or yearly basis. This then led us to use the Industrial Production Index (IPI) as a proxy of economic growth and as our regressand, with tourism arrivals from the World and the ASEAN as our main regressors. To be able to test this hypothesis we ran a Log-Log Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) Regression for the monthly timeline between 2011 and 2017. The findings show that the relationship between IPI and tourism arrivals postulated was indeed positive, as well as that ASEAN member states contribute a significant amount more than the World.

Abstract:
This thesis represents a systematic attempt to analyse the economic impact of international tourism in Iceland. While tourism has long been seen as an important source of foreign exchange and employment for the country very little detailed information is available on the role that the industry plays in the national economy.
To fill this 'information gap' two questionnaires were used to gather data on tourist expenditure characteristics and the cost and revenue structures of various tourism businesses. This data was then analysed using a simplified multiplier model. A series of findings are presented, including: the economic impacts associated with various 'tourist types': the ability of different tourism businesses and sectors to generate local income and employment, and; the links that exist between the industry and the rest of the economy. Each of these data bases is then used to provide an overview of future policy options facing the Icelandic government.
The research reveals that international tourism plays a major role in the Icelandic economy and is potentially an important tool for regional development. The data provides an important foundation upon which future tourism development strategics and research can be based.

Abstract:
In the conviction that cultural itineraries must assume a growing importance in a tourism based on the criteria of sustainability, three examples of the valorisation of local culture have been elaborated. This is effectively an important component of sustainable development, one of the fundamental aspects of which is the historic memory of the territory. The growth of the tourist and free time market provides an efficacious stimulus for the development of proposals aimed at prospecting new itineraries and alleviating the more consolidated tourist flows, inserting a vast heritage of landscape and cultural resources within significant territorial fabrics. This is also true from the point of view of growing synergies between economy and culture. The three proposed itineraries unwind through areas of great interest in terms of historical traditions and of specific territorial resources which deserve cultural valorisation, particularly in view of the fact that Tuscany offers an enormous wealth distributed in a capillary manner, but much of which is little known.

In many European regions, rural areas are facing major challenges in economic and social terms, consequence of transformations in the role and meaning of agriculture. The loss of the productive character strongly contributed to the emergence of new roles and functions, particularly related to leisure and tourism. The book aims to discuss questions directly related to the connections between rural tourism and local socioeconomic contexts, presenting diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives and diff erent case studies from various European regions. The book addresses the relationships among rural tourism and the complex interactions, confl icts and innovative processes developing in rural territories as consequence of the implementation of tourism activities. The book responds to some relevant and not yet comprehensively researched aspects within this topic, especially in what extent tourism, in its various forms and processes, might give an important contribution to rural development.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter advances two main arguments: first, that tourism and migration are strongly inter-related, and that this is due to both their shared structural determinants (for example, transport infrastructures) in the form of scapes, and to the enfolded nature of mobility. That is, individual mobilities are enfolded over time, with earlier migration experiences influencing later patterns of tourism and vice versa. Second, it is argued that there are two main economic development outcomes of the migration-tourism nexus. The first is seen in the roles of individuals as consumers, that is, as tourists. Tourism expenditures convert into income and jobs so that migration flows have long-term implications for future tourism expenditure patterns. And secondly, migration plays an important role in the territorial redistribution of resources; migrants are bearers of knowledge, skills, competences and capital.

Abstract This chapter reflects on a neglected export sector in the Nigerian economy, that of tourism, in order to identify whether some refinements to the existing principles of developing tourism are merited. It then goes on to hint at both the issues that deserve consideration for future tourism development in Nigeria and also the general implications that the continued neglect of the sector portends. Strategic resource allocation, human resource development, funding of the tourism sector, and public-private sector roles are identified as the essential inputs to tourism development in general, highlighting their strategic importance with respect to policy and planning principles, as a framework for exploring the future growth and direction of the tourism sector in Nigeria in particular.

Abstract:
Since the second half of the 20th century tourism has become one of the fast developing and expanding sectors in the world economy. The tourism sector plays an important role in alleviating issues related with the balance of payments, reducing unemployment, creating tax incomes and contributing to economic developments by providing a large foreign exchange inflow to the country, therefore, we can say that this sector has larger impact on economic growth than other sectors. As it is in developing and underdeveloped countries, in Kyrgyzstan the tourism industry is one of the most important sectors in the economy. The tourism sector in Kyrgyzstan plays an important role in in economic development by reducing the level of unemployment and generating the income by providing mass foreign exchange inflow to the country. In this context the aim of this paper is to analyze the role and importance of tourism in Kyrgyzstan’s economy by using methods of statistical analysis. The results show that the total number of tourists coming to Kyrgyzstan, thus the tourism revenues increased. In other words, when tourism revenues increase, this fosters economic development, by receiving a larger share of tourism revenues. In this study, the literature review method was used.

Abstract:
Globalization has allowed a number of countries to make important progresses that would contribute to economy in areas like industry and information technologies. Developed economies have obtained a cost advantage and increased both product potential and economic progress by means of advanced technologies. Developing economies, on the other hand, are required to determine the sectors to invest in order to progress. Regarding progress, it is primarily required to evaluate the tourism supply potential of countries. The tourism sector in Turkey has made a great progress for nearly more than 30 years and tourism has had positive effects upon economy. Foreign currency inflow of the country has increased the investment, revenue and employment and positively affected the balance of payments. Taking necessary precautions for Turkey to get more share from the international tourism revenue will also increase the social welfare. In this study, the place and importance of the tourism sector in economy are evaluated with the help of data. These data consist of the number of foreign tourists that come to Turkey for touristic reasons, acquired tourism revenue, touristic expenditure rates, share of tourism in the Gross National Product, as well as its effects upon the national income and share in foreign trade. Interpreting the reasons and outcomes of the recent decrease in tourism revenues in our country; it has been concluded that Turkey is in a serious need of tourism revenues and it is required to urgently intervene in this matter.

In the conditions of the modern competitively developing tourism, the problems of sustainable development of a tourist destination, the need for development of alternative types of tourism are economic and social processes of increasing importance. Moreover, they focus on some of the most important changes and problems in the way of development of modern tourism. Where are these intersections and what are they due to? In what sense are the phenomena of wine tourism, sustainable development and tourist destination becoming more and more interdependent processes? How is the national and regional development of wine tourism and its sustainable development reflected in the mirror of international tourism, in the conditions of "globality" and "locality"?

Abstract:
The aim of this paper2 is to discuss and emphasize the importance of acquiring and developing intercultural communicative competence (hereinafter ICC) for tourist professionals in the context of strategic advantages of Montenegro as a tourist destination. Montenegro, as a multicultural, multiethnic and multi-confessional country with a very rich and ancient cultural heritage and preserved natural resources, strives for European integration and achieving international competitiveness in the field of tourism through the development of its strategic advantages. In order to achieve progress in tourism industry, it is necessary to apply an interdisciplinary approach, which includes a symbiosis of elements of culture and tradition with the need and demands of modern tourists who want to communicate with the domicile population, or at least with their hosts, as well as to feel comfortable and welcome at the destination they have chosen for their holiday. Therefore, communicative and affective segments must be added to this interdisciplinary approach which inevitably includes the acquisition of new skills in intercultural communication at the international level. Such communication enables the development of ICC through the inclusion of both linguistic and cultural elements of education in tourism and applying the intercultural approach in foreign language teaching. Furthermore, developing intercultural aspects in tourism should be seen as one of core advantages of smaller and still insufficiently affirmed tourist regions, such as Montenegro, especially in these disruptive circumstances of crisis caused by Covid -19 virus.

The study aims to reveal the most current economic impact of shared accommodation on the economy of the receptive destination - at national and local level. As the biggest representative of peer-to-peer accommodation worldwide, Airbnb is the subject of the current research. Therefore, the business model of Airbnb is shortly examined and the specific distinctions of the company are presented. The data, used for the economic impact analysis, is officially published from Airbnb studies in national and local economies of various tourist destinations. The main conclusion is that there is a huge economic impact of Airbnb, especially in Europe and USA, and the perspective is for further growth. One of the most important features of Airbnb is the ability to spread the economic impact in tourism less developed destinations and to concentrate the benefits in the local economy.

Abstract:
Tourism sector, like most of the other countries of the world, has also gained importance in Turkey in last few decades. Global tourist flows and tourism income have a steady increase. Hence, as an effective tool for sustainable economic development and welfare, importance of tourism sector is rising. Tourism is a considerable source of an additional income, exchange, employment and tax revenue for most countries. Turkey is one of the prominent tourism destinations for the world tourist flows. Turkish tourism industry began to grow in 1980s with the incentive macroeconomic policies. The industry has been growing in terms of international tourist arrivals and tourism receipts despite some discouraging events, such as economics crisis in the source countries, changing concerns, political incidents etc. For a sustainably growing and productive tourism sector it is essential to reduce the volatility in tourist arrivals. A less volatile tourist inflow may help to policy and decision makers. So, understanding the volatility of demand can reduce the uncertainty and help to develop appropriate policies. This paper aims to conduct such an analysis for Turkey’s inbound tourist flow, using the monthly data for 1996-2011 period. Exploiting alternative modeling techniques to measure and investigate the volatility in international tourist arrivals, the study concluded that the volatility of tourist arrivals to Turkey is asymmetric: positive shocks have a differential impact on future volatility than negative shocks.
