Abstract:
This paper investigates the impact of remittance inflows on economic growth and poverty reduction for seven African countries using annual data from 1992-2010. By using the depth of hunger as a proxy for poverty in a Simultaneous Equation Model (SEM), we find that remittances have statistically significant growth enhancing and poverty reducing impact. Drawing on our estimates, we conclude that financial development level significantly increases the remittances inflows and strengthens poverty alleviating impact of remittances. Results of our study further show a signficant interactive imapct of remittances and finacial develpment on economic growth, suggesting the substitutability between remittance inflows and financial development. We further find that 3 percentage point increase in credit provision to the private sector (financial development) can help eliminate the severe depth of hunger in the region. Remittances, serving an alternative source of private credit, can be effective in this regard. Keywords: Remittance Inflow, Poverty Alleviation, Financial Development, Simultaneous Equation Model

Abstract:
Demographic dividend is a dynamica in demographic that accurs due to the change of demographic structure based on age, where the number of productive population is higher than un-productive populatian. Indonesia has experiancing this conditian since 2015 untill 2035. Although west Sumatera is not fully experiancing demographic dividend, this conditions still offers an opportunity to improve welfare and promote a better economic development by improving and optimalizing the development of economic sector. Since agricultural sector is the biggest sector contributing to GDP and absorb labour in West Sumatera, the goverment should optimalize the develpment of this sector. Beside that, West Sumatera is a hinterland area (LQ=1,750) that can provide agricultural commodity for other provinces. Assumingly that the requarement of a good quality of human resource is fulfilled, the ability to purchase of the productive population in Indonesia will increase and create more demand for good quality of agricultural commodities. Additionally, this condition is an opportunity of West Sumatera to develop sub-sector of agroindutry in order to create value added of agricultural commodity. The development of agroindustry not only will increase farmers income in rural area but also will reduce un-employment in West Sumatera. Key word : demographic, development, agriculture

In modern labor economics there are different approaches to building a competency model, however they describe the behavior of the teacher, or from a position of pedagogical activity, either in terms of its research and development activities. We submitted that effective professional activity in modern conditions should be considered from the standpoint of the competitiveness of the University. The modern model of competences of the University teacher needs to focus on such professional activities as teacher-teacher, by the educational and scientific functions, the teacher as the creator of competitive advantages of the University.

Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze the develpmental dynamics concerning the governance of Balinese Joged Bumbung performances in the era of globalization. Developments being analyzed involve innovations in governance of performance standards. The methodologies utilized in conducting this research include observations, interviews, and literature studies. Post-modern aesthetic theory is utilized for analysis of phenomena such as, receptivity aesthetics and aesthetics in relation to social facts and arts of the community (Mukarovsky, 1970). Organizational innovation is a manifestation of changes in aesthetic functions by the role of supporting art, Bali’s Joged Bumbung which exists as social dance. In recent developments many manifestations of this art form have been ridiculed as joged ngebor (meaning “drill” with pornographic connotations), also is much appreciated as innovative joged (joged care jani) due to a change in governance of performance standards. This happens because of the interplay of extraneous factors (people’s taste and the influence of television entertainment arts), as well as intrinsic forces (creative power and pragmatic attitudes of performers). The taste of the people who want dancers to move in this ngebor manner is understood to be pragmatic by the performers whose affirmation of these movement modalities only for the sake of monetary interest (economic goals). Even though there are also Joged Bumbung Bali innovations; which are creative in organizing performances without being eroded to appear as pornographic and are still in demand by the community. The offer of a model of grooming performance, which prioritizes creativity in the development of accompaniment music and dance movements, has been an innovative Bali’s Joged Bumbung as an offer to fight the tendancy to be erotic.

Curry, Joanne. "Contrasting the cases of two cities in Canada : understanding the factors in building confidence in university-city government collaborations." Thesis, University of Bath, 2015. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.681047.

Full text
Abstract:
As city governments and universities expand their roles in economic development, an opportunity is created to transform a university–city relationship from an operational one to a strategic one and from co-existence to collaboration. Impacted by history and context, there are many challenges to overcome. The goal of my thesis was to understand the “doing of collaboration” and the specific management processes in university–local government collaborations. I conducted a comparative case study of a Canadian University, Simon Fraser University, and two city governments, Burnaby and Surrey. A number of management processes are critical in building a successful collaboration. Two of the most important are the use of one or more liaison people with the appropriate skills, mandate and access to resources and the involvement of representatives at different organizational levels, particularly faculty who provide access to the university’s research capacity. Bilateral city–university committees and a good relationship between the university president and city mayor are useful but not sufficient to deepen the collaboration. The involvement of third-party organizations in the university–city relationship is beneficial. The importance of trust-building processes such as attribution and dispute resolution are heightened if there is a need to overcome a negative historical incident, an isolated geographic location, or tensions over transactional issues. While management processes are important, a shared strategic goal is paramount. This shared goal may not be evident at the start of a relationship. To identify the shared goal, it is necessary to have an understanding of the most valued university roles given the city’s context and aims. Each organization must have sufficient trust to enter into a deeper collaboration and an initial condition of openness, responsiveness, and commitment is necessary. The thesis provides practical advice to cities and universities and reveals how demonstration of value can build over increasingly ambitious projects.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies the political motivations and the economic rationality of Ernesto Geisel government. The research is based on bibliographical and documentary research. The central issue of this paper is: to what extent the political and economic objectives of the Ernesto Geisel's government are associated? What is the rationale for the adoption of the II PND and its connection with the institutionalization of military regime project? The hypothesis to be tested is the adoption of the II PND as politically and economically rational. It is considered, a priori, that economic rationality and political rationality can be understood together. It discusses singularities of the authoritarian government and its legitimacy, the role of the opposition and the elections, furthermore the regime institutionalization objective as condition for the intended policy of transition project. It sets out economic conditions of the Geisel period, analyzes the institutional reforms undertaken and evaluates the economic policies and their effective results, with special attention to the II PND. Following the main interpretations of the Geisel government and the II PND are confronted. Finally, it is proposed an evaluation of the economic rationality and Geisel government policy with the help of the Acemoglu and Robinson (2001) model. As main results are identified elements that attest to the economic rationality of the development project in the midst of the oil crisis, and the confluence of this rationality with the largest claim of institutionalize the Brazilian military regime to give way to political transition process, what also argues that sustaining economic growth can be understood as a politically rational strategy.
