Abstract:
AbstractThis paper analyzes the role of religious faith in the work of two Christian NGOs involved in economic development in Zimbabwe, World Vision and Christian Care. While economic development is rarely analyzed in terms of religious ideas, this essay explores the religious aspects of development for employees of Christian NGOs and recipients of their development assistance. Uniting development and evangelism, employees of Christian NGOs articulate faith through concepts of 'holism', 'lifestyle evangelism', and prayer. These ideas and practices permeate institutional directives, the experiences of NGO workers, and the communities they serve. The essay compares what faith means to communities being 'developed' at project sites in rural Zimbabwe with faith as it is exercised alongside administrative power in NGO offices. It demonstrates how faith structures the initiatives and interpretation of economic development, and traces what is religious about development for NGO employees and for the rural communities they assist.

One of the peculiarities of modern communication is the desire to learn another culture not singling out its values, i.e. the qualitative characteristics of the modern world development is the unconditional priority of knowledge over traditions. Thus, the immanent aspiration of any culture to a dialogue is opposed to the actual running globalization. Modern globalization process is, first of all, the birth of the new social system, built on the domination of informational technologies. Education as economic factor has the primary role in the foundation of such a society.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper investigates the effects of religion on a broad set of development outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. We regroup these outcomes into three broad categories, namely, development process outcomes (growth, investment, conflict, and government quality), institutional outcomes (property rights and the rule of law) and social development outcomes (social and gender protection). Using two new measures of religion – religious fractionalization (RELFRAC) and religious polarization (RELPOL), alongside the traditional measure of religious diversity, our results suggest that broadly speaking, religion or religious diversity has no statistically significant impact on the institutional and social aspects of development in sub-Saharan Africa. However, our findings do suggest that religion has important effects on the development process through its effects on investment. The analysis suggests that African policy-makers need to pay attention to the changing religious dynamics and increasing religious polarization of African societies.

Abstract:
We are living in an age of reaffirmation and revival of religious/national and cultural identities as a reaction to the sweeping onslaught of socio-economic, cultural and technological globalization. In India the demand for a definition of national identity based on Hinduism or on Hindutva (Hinduness) predates the achievement of independence in 1947 and it was gradually reinforced by successive political crises, such as the partition between India and Pakistan, successive wars with Pakistan, the continuing separatist agitation in the Kashmir Valley and the rise of large-scale Islamist terrorism since the 11th of September 2001 if not before. Historically a distinction has been made between Hinduism, as the religion and way of life of more than a billion people in India and in other countries and Hindutva, a cultural ideology and a sociopolitical doctrine which defines a modernized version of Hindu or in broader sense Indic civilisation (encompassing Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and other indigenous minority religions). Many Hindus do not accept the premises or least the political theory of Hindutva whereas Hindutva proponents may not be ‘believers’ in the ritual and theological aspects of Hindu Dharma and may define themselves as sceptics, materialists or atheists. However they conceive of the common Hindu national civilisation and millenary historical heritage as the cement that can bind the country’s diverse people together and they usually reject the ‘secular’ view that India is the home of a composite culture forged out of many domestic and foreign elements and consisting of diverse ethnic groups which were brought together as a nation by British colonization. This paper succinctly retraces the evolution and expansion of Hindu nationalism in the politics of the country and distinguishes between the various nuances of the ideology which is now the source of inspiration for the National Democratic Alliance led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It strives to answer the often asked question: Is India becoming a Hindu State?

Abstract:
AbstractIn his essays on the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism Max Weber proceeds from the observation that in Germany there is a clearly recognizable difference between the economic behaviour of Catholics and Protestants. As one of the reasons for this difference, the essays reveal-as a guiding principle for people's conduct of life-the principle of worldly asceticism inherent in Protestantism. This, Weber said, especially contributed to the formation of modern bourgeois capitalism in the occidental world. This thesis was mainly developed on the evidence of phenomena which Weber observed in Western Europe and North America and which he himself related to Calvinism. The problem now is that the Germany of Weber's time, as a leading industrial state, participated in modern western capitalism without Calvinism playing for the German Protestants a role which would have been in any way comparable to its role in the more western countries. Detailed examination of governmental, economic, and social conditions in the history of the denominalisation of some German territories and the comparison with the living conditions of Protestants in Western Europe and America leads to the conclusion that the later development of bourgeois economy and what I would like to call "Word Culture" (cf. p. 176f.) depended on the following factors: on with what methods and with what severity the rulers of the Reformation Era succeeded in imposing their own personal choice of faith upon their subjects or how far they allowed things to take their course without interference; then on whether they in this way curtailed, permitted or even supported the development of that capitalist and bourgeois economic spirit and "Word Culture" which had its roots as far back as the pre-Reformation era and which had then been boosted by Calvinism. Both individual belief and the rulers' power over this belief influenced equally vigorously and lastingly the mentality of all people concerned. Even more generalized: depending on whether and to what extent the religious and intellectual culture of a society are subjected to state oppression and coercive formation over a long period of time, the intellectual culture and economic attitude and potential of this society will develop. Life-style, economic ethic and cultural profile of many later generations depend on this.

This article aims to criticize the development of religious tourism which tends to create economic-oriented goals and neglect the sacredness of both religious sites and rituals. The declaration of religious tourism program in many villages tends to push local people further to take more serious attentions to some religious sites and rituals in order to gain more economic profit without considering other aspects, including the sacredness of those religious sites and rituals. Through the case study of managing Sendang and Makam Bagusan in Godean, Sleman, Special District of Yogyakarta, particularly considering on in-depth interviews and participant observations, the results of this research show how the sacredness of religious sites and rituals can be preserved and reproduced along with increasing the numbers of pilgrims. Several efforts in preserving and reproducing the sanctity of religious sites have effectively preserved the sacredness of both sites and rituals from economics-oriented behaviors in developing religious tourism projects across this country.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the causal link between religion and the formation of human capital. It takes into consideration that, though religion may transmit a system of values that positively affect children’s education, it can also be characterized by a traditionalist dimension. The latter may hamper children’s self-determination and their educational achievements. Nevertheless, religious values may adapt to the cultural changes due to economic development and modernization and become less conservative. Design/methodology/approach The above aspects are investigated through an overlapping generations model with human capital where parents’ human capital and the religion in which individuals have been raised, characterize family background. Findings The model’s predictions point to the crucial role that development may play in promoting education. For instance, if a moderate responsiveness of religious institutions to economic and cultural changes is associated with low development, conservative attitudes prevail in society. This undermines individual confidence in improving one’s socio-economic status through education and negatively affects children’s education. Whereas, a development level sufficiently high counterbalances the effects of a low ability of religious institutions to adjust to changes and fosters education. Originality/value Though the empirical literature widely acknowledges that religion affects economic growth, the hypothesis that the link between religion and economic performance may also pass through education has been overlooked. In this respect, the paper investigates on this relationship by taking religion as a force reactive to economic processes.

Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia represented a community of six republics with socio-cultural, social and economical differences that increased over the decades, leading to disintegration of the state. Factors that led to the collapse of the state are numerous, such as cultural and religious differences, nationalism, structure and function of the state system, internal and external factors of disintegration, change in the world politics, different levels of economic development of the republics. The economic system of Yugoslavia was based on self-managing model, a hybrid of both capitalism and socialism, which was considered to be the most effective use of capital goods, increasing workforce productivity, distributing the income and creating a product competitive for the domestic and foreign markets. However, this system had tremendous disadvantages which in addition to the changes in the world market led to the state of recession, very high inflation, decrease in workforce productivity and competitiveness of the final products in the markets, eventually resulting in the collapse of the entire system and disintegration of Yugoslavia.

Abstract:
AbstractThe development of South Korea and its growth to become the world’s eleventh largest economy has been accompanied by the introduction of Christianity and its increase to become the major religious group, to which nearly thirty per cent of the population are affiliated. This article probes the connection between these two spectacular examples of development; economic and religious. By highlighting moments or episodes of Christian contribution to aspects of development in Korean history and linking these to relevant aspects of Korean Christian theology, there is shown to be a constructive, although not always intentional, link between Korean Christianity and national development. The nature of the Christian contribution is seen not primarily in terms of the work ethic it engenders (as argued by Max Weber in the case of European capitalism) but mainly in the realm of aspirations (visions, hope) of a new society and motivation (inspiration, empowerment) to put them into effect. In other words, it was the public theology of Christianity that played a highly significant role in the modernization and revitalization of Korean society in the twentieth century.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to use international survey data to investigate the effects of religiosity, religious denomination, communist heritage, and socio-economic development on work values. Design/methodology/approach – First, religiosity and work values are conceptualized. Next, the relationships among these concepts are discussed and the hypotheses, variables, and data are presented. Finally, the results of the empirical tests are presented and the theoretical and managerial implications, as well as avenues for future research, are discussed. Findings – It is found that socio-economic development negatively, whereas religiosity and communist heritage positively, influence extrinsic work values. Further analysis reveals that religiosity has a quadratic relationship with intrinsic work values. Conspicuously, after controlling for the effects of religiosity, no significant association is found between religious denominations and work values. Research limitations/implications – The current analysis relies only on national/societal level data and overlooks the effects of independent variables (religiosity and communist heritage) at the individual level. Furthermore, the methodologies and measurements of religiosity and work values are of a limited scope. Thus, future studies may look into the effects of religiosity on work values at the individual level and apply other conceptualizations and measures to test the validity of the results. Practical implications – Based on the findings of this study, it can be suggested that the use of intrinsic rewards might be less appropriate in the societies marked by communist heritage or high religiosity. On the contrary, these societies may embrace more extrinsic work values associated with direct, restrictive, and tangible aspects of work. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature by conceptualizing, measuring, and incorporating various variables into the research design and by providing original insights into the influence of religion on work values. Furthermore, this study suggests that, at least with regard to work values, religiosity (the strength of one’s conviction for their religion) is more important than religious denomination (Protestantism, Catholicism, Islam, Orthodox Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism).

Abstract:
The processes of the development of a market economy, entailing the commercialization in all spheres of social life, raise the question of the correlation between the role of human beings as economic subjects and our role as moral beings. In economics, this this issue is associated with the discussion about the way norms pervade economic theory, expressed in the dichotomy between holistic and individualistic methods. The scope of the influence of governmental bodies and large corporate structures on the socio-economic, cultural and natural environment highlights the philosophical problem of applying moral criteria to collective economic actors, which is reflected in the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The author, in this paper, opines that the question of introducing ethical principles into economic practice cannot be entirely resolved within the framework of economic theory and requires an appeal to moral philosophy. The problem of the correlation between the economic and the moral spheres is considered on the basis of V.S. Solovyov’s work “The Justification of the Good”. The principal economic ideas stated in this work are discussed in the context of assessments by past and present researchers, of economic history, and of philosophical and economic-managerial conceptions. The author presents a comparative analysis of V.S. Solovyov’s ideas about the correlation between economics and morality and the principal ideas behind corporate social responsibility. The author reveals axiological and teleological differences between the two conceptions. Whereas V.S. Solovyov deals with moral and religious categories and notions of progress, the concept of corporate social responsibility is based on economic and legal priorities and is focused on sustainable development. At the same time, the similarities identified between the concepts (such as their complex nature, the acknowledgement of the role of moral principles of the economic participants, the importance of environmental issues and legal regulators) lead us to conclude about the possibility of their further convergence and the surmounting of the limitations of corporate social responsibility based on the teachings of V.S. Solovyov.

Abstract:
The article considers the retrospective and modern aspects of the development of charitable activity in the socio-economic sense, which is the assistance to other persons at the expense of own welfare or free time, and provided that this assistance does not harm other persons and is carried out within the law. Charity should benefit not only the immediate recipient of benefit but also society as a whole. The authors emphasize that the conducted study supports their hypothesis that under the conditions of globalization, society increasingly focuses on social issues that arise as a result of insufficient state resources and so charity becomes a factor in their successful resolution. The development of charity is a system of social, economic, and cultural factors. One of the stages of the development of charity was the creation of charitable foundations specializing in various fields: scientific, cultural, sporting, educational projects, assistance to needy families, help for orphanages, hospitals, fundraising for expensive treatment and other projects. In today’s world, the attitude towards charity as a professional occupation has become widespread, becoming a “social norm.” Charitable funds are a separate and important component of the charitable institution. The concept of “charity” came into the public consciousness as a humanistic call of a person to go to the needy, regardless of religious, national, racial, social affiliation or political or ideological beliefs. Retrospective analysis showed that forms of philanthropy in the advanced form existed already in ancient Rome and ancient Greece; in medieval Europe, they already acquired the status of state and social policy at the legislative level. In the Christian aspect of ancient Rus of the adoption of the Orthodox faith in 988, the foundations of charity are laid as socio-ethical norms of society. In the second half of the XVIII century, as a result of secularization, charitable societies, hospitals, almshouses, open by public organizations and private individuals arise, that is, there are social and state institutions of charity. And charitable funds, which are socio-economic professional activities, are beginning to develop. From ancient to modern times, charitable activity is carried out in the forms of patronage, sponsorship, volunteering, fundraising. Modern trends of charity include: increase of the non-profit sector and its internationalization; cooperation of charitable foundations, development of a social partnership with business, state bodies, and foreign funds; professionalization through the creation of network charity. In turn, charity abroad is characterized by growing professionalism, a variety of forms and programs of cooperation, the growth and expansion of the sphere itself and its importance for non-profit, in particular, socio-cultural activities. The undisputed leader in this area is the USA – the birthplace of modern sponsorship and fundraising. The authors conditionally distinguish three levels of charity. The typology and general characteristics of foreign charitable foundations, typical for the USA, European countries, and Ukraine, are presented. Features of creation and functioning of quasi-public funds are considered. On a global scale, the foreign activity of the US foundations is significant, and the expenditures exceed the official foreign aid budgets of many countries. However, their presence in Ukraine is relatively low. The volume of support is negligible compared to official support amounts: according to the OECD, the amount of grants actually received by Ukraine from other states and multilateral donors in 2011–2017 amounted to more than 5 billion USD while less than 0.1 billion USD came to Ukraine from US foundations. But this does not exclude the role of private donors in solving certain problems, in particular, in terms of supporting civil society, protecting the rights of vulnerable groups of the population, etc.

Since 11 September 2001, Islam has been viewed as a threat to global stability rather than as a potential factor for peacebuilding and development. Therefore, most studies on Islam have been framed around security. Although research on the security threat posed by Islamist extremists is understandable, the main purpose of this study is to explore and give more attention to positive and continued contributions of Islamic faith to Somalia’s history and its current situation. To date, Islam has had an enormous constructive impact on Somali society at different stages of its history. It has strengthened peace capacity and development aspects such as literacy, socio-economic factors, justice, urbanisation, common identity and shared future aspirations, which have risen above clan divisions. In terms of methods, this study employs descriptive and analytical research methodologies. In conclusion, despite the current negative interpretation, activities, and actions attributed to the extremist Islamist groups in Somalia and beyond, Islam, on the other hand, has contributed enormously to civilising Somalis, shaping their common identity, nurturing a culture of peace, and improving social development. As it has been in the past, it maintains the potential to provide for Somalia’s future stability and prosperity.

AbstractThis study uses data from the Religion and State Round 2 dataset to examine the trends in religious discrimination and religious support between 1990 and 2008, finding a statistically significant increase in both variables. These findings are based on a longer time span and more comprehensive variables than previous studies, remain constant when controlling for world region and majority religion, and predate the events of September 11, 2001. This undermines the aspects of secularization theory which predict a decline in religion's public influence. Furthermore, economic development, one of the processes predicted by secularization theory decrease religion's public influence, is correlated with increased religious discrimination and support.

The study design used a qualitative approach with a number of selected informants. The research location was in the Nurul Junaidiyah Lauwo Luwu Timur Islamic boarding school which was one of the pesantren that developed in the Tana Luwu area of South Sulawesi. The results of the study showed that the Islamic Boarding School Nurul Junaidiyah had carried out a role in the social field, namely holding formal education, accommodating santri from poor families, organizing economic empowerment activities through cooperatives. In the aspect of religious development, the Pesantren Junaidiyah Lauwo became a pioneer of moderate Islamic da'wah involving Kyai, Caregivers, Teachers, santri and alumni. Along with the global dynamics, it is necessary to increase the role of pesantren through cooperation with alumni ties, government, and other institutions. In the aspect of religious development, the Nurul Junaidiyah Islamic Boarding School has made good contributions, especially in printing the memorization of the Koran, but the social aspects need to improve social programs such as fostering orphans, fostering converts and or establishing ulema cadre centers (ma'had aly).

It was established, that the formation of regional housing markets are too difficult process and are indicated by a large number of factors influencing to the processes of its formation. Through theoretical generalization, we identified six groups of factors that have a direct and indirect impact on supply and demand on the regional housing market. To the first group of factors attributed territorial housing market factors, among which are selected location of the property, infrastructure providing of this territory and ecological situation. The second group of factors includes quality characteristics of housing, among which are: construction materials; working characteristics and wearing out; architectural and planning features of the property. The third group is represented by economic factors, which include income of population, income of developers or property developers; the overall level of development of a region or settlement; investment factor; mortgage factor speculative factor and construction industry development in general. Group of demographic-settlement factors include an assessment of the demographic situation, labor market in the region, migration processes, the system of settlement and security of this area. Legislative and legal factors manifested through the state and regional policy in the housing market, housing programs, taxation processes, lending insurance and in the housing market. Social and psychological factors include behavior and preferences of consumers, price expectations, seasonality, ethnic or religious characteristics of the region. This paper examines geographical determinants of communal conflicts in Indonesia. Data comes from the 2008 Village Potential Census (Podes) and official statistics which consist of communal conflict information across all Indonesia’s districts (N districts = 465). Results from spatial dependent model show that communal conflict to be spatially dependent through latent determinants, meaning that communal conflict clusters because of clustering of latent determinants within district. Rather than religious and ethnic heterogeneity, communal conflict is positively associated with poverty, economic inequality, elite capture, and weak capacity of districts to manage fiscal resources.

Abstract:
Against the background of increasing political and academic interest in imam and chaplaincy training and education in Europe, this article argues that the value and purpose of such education remains situated in an alignment between educational provider, student-participants, and employer–stakeholder expectations. These expectations are primarily about Muslim students’ learning and development, requirements and standards of employers, and contributions to community and society, and only secondly, the educations aim at meeting political expectations. The article explores aspects of Hartford Seminary’s success with its programme and alignment of education content and environment with student expectations and the labour market demand. This is supported theoretically by the input–environment–outcome assessment model. The structural and contextually embedded criteria for excellence are discussed and problematised, pointing both to the marginalisation of other drivers of education development that are not market aligned and to strategies of embedding religious authority with chaplains in institutions rather than with imams in mosques. In conclusion, the article highlights the self-sustaining logics that drive educational development but also points to corroborating social, economic, and welfare reasons for quality imam and chaplaincy education.

Abstract:
Objective determinants of geopolitical space of Ukraine are characterised, which at the present stage is manifested from geospatial position in economic, ideological, information- cybernetic and sociopolitical dimensions. Accordingly, appropriate characteristics and typical features of analysis are proposed for each of these directions. Thanks to them there is a possibility of multilateral consideration of those determinants which define today a place of the Ukrainian space on the European geopolitical arena. Philosophical methods (in particular, principles of interdependence, interrelation, causality), comparative-geographical and comparative-historical methods as well as method of system analysis and content analysis were used to observe features of clarity, effectiveness and validity of research results. The article analyzes organizational arrangements and institutional mechanisms of implementation of European integration policy of Ukraine, defines the intermediary role of the European Union countries in this policy, and studies the influence of the European vector on structural changes of economic, social and political environment of Ukraine. The attention is focused on the place of Ukraine in the geopolitical concept of the leading countries of the world. The features of internal geopolitical situation formation in the context of large related macro-regions are reflected in detail. In each of the macro-regions some specific mental and behavioral features that determine its uniqueness, but not isolation, are pointed out. The features of territorial and political consolidation of the state at the present stage are defined. The modern determinants of economic nature on the immediate prospects of development of the national economy are highlighted. The role of information component in the formation of geopolitical features of space as a source of influence and popularization of certain behavioral content is noted. Indicators of electoral sympathies, which embody certain ideological and social preferences of the population, were used to assess the socio-political determinant. The impact of recent political events in Ukraine, in particular, the results of the parliamentary elections, on the strengthening of the country's European policy and overcoming the dependencies caused by geopolitical factors is monitored. The determinants of the geopolitical space of Ukraine should be assessed from the standpoint of considering the so-called internal and external conditions. Domestic determinants are determined along with the morphology of the territory, political and cultural unity of the country, its retrospective review, consistency and efficiency of public administration, natural resource and economic potential and features of socio-economic development, features of militarization, experience of national diplomacy and more. The external determinants of the national geopolitical space include the influence of foreign states and their union formations, the nature and relationship of political and economic processes in the world and in the region to which it belongs geographically, the validity of transit flows, threats of armed conflict and other negative challenges. Based on the priority task of considering the geopolitical space of Ukraine, we note its importance, referring to world geopolitical concepts (F. Fukuyama, S. Huntington, Z. Brzezinski), which emphasize the role of our state as a promising geopolitical player, which should be part of influential economic security supranational structures. At the intra-regional level, the perception of Ukraine's geolocation is largely correlated with linguistic, ethnic, religious and other identifying features, but in contrast to the significant number of historical, socio-cultural and economic components that influenced the implementation of systemic domestic geopolitics. Therefore, the issue of territorial and political consolidation, although raised, was not systemic, and therefore requires the development of a strategy for the development of the state on ideological grounds as a nation-state of the European type with minimization of cultural and civilizational contrasts in the regional space. The economic determinant is emphasized by the possibility of rethinking the status quo (the energy intensity of space needed to reproduce society and the consumer type of functioning of the corporation, both global and transnational) and the possibility of using the chance to build a national economy (postwar recovery) based on progressive European experience. Information and cyber determinants of geopolitical space are determined by the scale and direction of the military-political and socio-economic situation, the goals of state policy of national security, social and economic structures involved in information warfare. Socio-political determinants of the geopolitical space of Ukraine are reflected in the results of the electoral commitment of voters, who thus embodied a certain ideological content. Based on the definition of these determinants, a strategy of geopolitical space should be developed on the basis of a nationally oriented state. Keywords: geopolitical space, national manifestations of geopolitics, determinants, geopolitical factors, economic factors, sociopolitical factors, information-cybernetic factors.

Abstract:
Millennium era has been marked off by the horrific alert of the human extermination one of which is in the cutthroat tragedy of 09/11 in 2001, Indonesia is no exception. The series of terrorist attacks and suicide bombings that have recurred almost every year since 2000 behooves the Indonesian stakeholders to giving their very eyes on the roots of the problem. In Karen Armstrong’s viewpoint, the savagery of that extremist attack that slay thousands of people has nothing to do with religion alone, but dominantly also with economic cliff and political havoc in both national and global level. But she also calls to mind that it does not mean that religion has nothing to do with any barbarous acts. The atrocities in the name of religious motives in some aspects are convincingly the constant implications of the imparity of political economy. Terrorism and the similar acts of villainy instigated by the religious ideology are like “rotting fruit” of its main tree, fundamentalism. Fundamentalism is categorized as one of the huge challenges Indonesia has been facing along the post-Reform era. This article examines the problem of the absence of social justice and multidimensional approach of development at all level as the backbones and the determining factors of the emersion of the Indonesian fundamentalism.

Abstract:
Summary Subject and purpose of work: The work presents the emergence and shaping of basic economic issues since the dawn of human economic activity. Contemporary views on important economic issues have their roots in antiquity. The shaping of concepts such as money, interest, contract, credit as a part of the law, began a long time ago and exerted an influence on the way they are understood today. Materials and methods: The basis for the considerations is the study of literature on the history of the development of economics and the science of management in economic, philosophical and ethical aspects. The work has shown the non-linear nature of the development of new phenomena emerging in volatile political, technical, religious and moral conditions, which are largely spontaneous, and a reciprocal overlap of various fields of knowledge in a general and individual sense. Particular discoverers were found to present a wide spectrum of interests. Results: Historically, the development of economic knowledge began with the issues from the border of economics and management, from microeconomics (household) to macroeconomics (money); little information concerns large undertakings such as irrigation systems, pyramids or waging wars. Conclusions: Generally speaking - monarchs’ edicts came before the deliberations of thinkers, concrete reasoning came before abstract considerations.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to analyse the historical and cultural aspects of the ideological and conceptual essence of the foundations of the art project design. The research methodology includes a comprehensive approach that combines historical and cultural analysis methods to identify the process of formation of design as a cultural phenomenon. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by the fact that design is considered through cultural and historical issues, and the authors have identified the main features of industrial and post-industrial era design and characterised the designing tools. Conclusions. It is established that arising from the pragmatic needs of the development of the market of mass consumer goods, design becomes a general cultural factor and changes the world of things and the very way of socio-cultural existence of a person. Design is transformed into a henomenon that combines mass consumption, functional perfection, economic feasibility, convenience, utility, aesthetic expressiveness of things and the human environment. The article analyses what tools and tools are used to create images in designing. The role of design in visual culture is clarified. For a holistic understanding of the design features, the authors have analysed the transformations in the society of the 20th and early 21st centuries. With the help of design, new values, norms and meanings are formed in the cultural space, issues of individual freedom and individuality are raised, and spatial orientations, actions and forms of existence of each person and society are expanded. The emergence and development of new trends in design, and the high importance of design thinking in modern culture require scientific theoretical understanding, which determines the relevance of research. The authors provide a direction of scientific, educational and cultural vectors of Ukraine to pan-European standards and solutions to problems of improving the quality and safety of goods and the human environment, the implementation of innovative design technology, the preservation of national cultural traditions in the conditions of unification of production, taking into account environmental requirements in the designing of the objects, as the main factors of design development in Ukraine.

Abstract:
For a Muslim society, a mosque is very important as a place for worshipping the god as well as for social activities. Mosque has a variety of functions including ensuring a better understanding of Islam in the society and ensuring unity among the local community, including the non-muslim community. Therefore, it is important for any development of a mosque to take into account the sustainability aspect of the building which has great impacts on social, environmental, and economic factors. The objective of this study is to complete an initial study that discusses the sustainability of heritage mosques in the Malacca City Center. One of the main focuses is the green approaches. The study is still in its early stage, where a case study investigation was completed on two oldest mosques in Melaka City, namely, Kampung Hulu Mosque and Kampung Kling Mosque. This initial study focuses on the roles of the mosques on the locals in the aspects of social, environmental and economic. This study also discusses the history and architecture of the mosques. The findings of the study show that the Kampung Hulu Mosque and the Kampung Kling Mosque should be used as examples of a sustainable religious building that covers all aspects, namely economic, social and environmental aspects. This study reveals the sustainability approach of the mosques, and it also proves the role of the mosque is very important in community development. The sustainable design of these heritage mosques can be used as an example and guide to the construction of modern mosques.

Abstract:
The first quarter of the 21st century was marked by global instability. Sharp climate changes, biodiversity loss, exponential population growth, a lack of natural resources and living space, environmental pollution form a complex of current global issues that pose a threat to the humanity’s future. The article demonstrates the destructive nature of the established consumer vector of development, which underlies the modern economic model, and also reveals the negative aspects of scientific and technological progress that led to the global environmental crisis. Overcoming these negative trends presupposes the choice of new strategies for socioeconomic development, which are based on its alignment with the laws of evolution of the biosphere. The achievement of a secure future implies the preservation of natural ecosystems considering their ability to self-repair disturbed processes within the economic capacity of the biosphere, since its excess leads to a violation of the biological cycle of energy and matter, and to the ecological imbalance in the biosphere. Taking into account the patterns of conservation of natural ecosystems and the biosphere as a whole, the authors propose the strategy of sufficient development, and determine related implementation measures. They include development of environmentally safe technologies and the approval of a new humanism as a necessary condition for achieving a secure future. The authors argue there is a need in the radical revision of value orientations in order to achieve a secure future. This revision presupposes redirecting people from the anthropocentric orientation in relation to nature to the bio-anthropocentric orientation, which takes into account the need to preserve nature and the spiritual world, and preserves the moral foundations of the development of society.

This article examines the book culture of the Buryat Buddhists of the Southern Siberia. Based on social archaeographic studies, the article posits a link between local book culture and the stable identity of Buryat Buddhist. Defining Buryat Buddhist identity based on an analysis of different aspects of their worldview, cultural life, and historical past, this article reveals how Buddhist book culture and home life are the most important aspects in the formation of local identity. The analysis confirms that a radical change in the mechanism of the transfer of tradition, social changes, and the economic crisis led to the transformation of the vector of development in the traditional book culture of the Buryats, highlighting that the main priority is not the religious but the ethnic component.

Abstract:
In 1978 Barbara Pillsbury and I dedicated our coedited book, Muslim–Christian Conflicts: Economic, Political and Social Origins (Westview), with these words: “To those who struggle to demystify religion and to those who suffer and die because the struggle is yet unfinished.” Charles Issawi observes in his preface that the contributors to the volume tend to interpret the conflicts more in economic and political terms than in “religious” terms. In an effort to develop analytical tools, my introduction distinguishes between “religion/religious identity and consciousness” (as theology/theological consciousness) and “sect/sectarianism” (as social organization, relationships, dynamics/group identity, and consciousness). I argue that sectarianism is about how “differences” are constructed; because people can believe they are very different when they are not, the task of the scholar is to describe what differences do exist, how they emerged, and why people believe they are different. Differentiation is a process, I suggest, that operates through the everyday—through socialization, through family systems, and through various other aspects of social organization in both systematic and erratic or contradictory ways.

Abstract:
This article tries to understand Islamic reformation movements in the modern era based on two points of views: internal and external aspects. On the one hand, based on the internal aspect, Muslims need to reform their social structure and mental attitudes in arranging their socio-political lift by reforming their religious understanding which is accordance with their developing logics and imagination. In the other hand, based on the external aspect, it is because of the development of 'the economic-political authorities' in this modern era, i.e. a system of nation state, democartion, human ghts and modem capitalism. The changes force Muslims to reform their ways of thinking toward their religious orthodoxy, traditions, and intellectual treasury. To understand reformation movements could not be separated from their historical contexts because the reformation movements are not monolitic. They have various forms and different purposes. However, the religious understanding could not also be separated from the intellectual development and the challenges of life faced by Muslim societies.
