Abstract:
Abstract. Agricultural basins are the major source of N2O emissions, with arable land accounting for half of the biogenic emissions worldwide. Moreover, N2O emission strongly depends on the position of agricultural land in relation with topographical gradients, as footslope soils are often more prone to denitrification. The estimation of land surface area occupied by agricultural soils depends on the available spatial input information and resolution. Surface areas of grassland, forest and arable lands were estimated for the Orgeval sub-basin using two cover representations: the pan European CORINE Land Cover 2006 database (CLC 2006) and a combination of two databases produced by the Institut d'Aménagement et d'Urbanisme de la Région d'Île-de-France (IAU IDF), the MOS (Mode d'Occupation des Sols) combined with the Ecomos 2000, a land-use classification. In this study we have analyzed how different land-cover representations influence and introduce errors into the results of regional N2O emissions inventories. A further introduction of the topography concept was used to better identify the critical zones for N2O emissions, a crucial issue to better adapt the strategies of N2O emissions mitigation. Overall, we observed that a refinement of the land-cover database led to a 5% decrease in the estimation of N2O emissions, while the integration of the topography decreased the estimation of N2O emissions up to 25%.

Abstract:
Increasingly the UN is ‘subcontracting’ peacekeeping and peace enforcement operations. The ECOMOG intervention in Sierra Leone is an example. Some members of ECOMOG have been accused of violating international humanitarian law. These accusations have not been adequately addressed by ECOMOG nor by the UN. The limited attention paid to this problem by the UN in ‘subcontracted’ operations contrasts with increased concern with respect for international humanitarian law by forces under UN command and control. It is argued that the UN should ensure that ‘subcontracting’ does not lead to lowering standards of international humanitarian law.

Abstract:
e17105 Background: According to recent reports, sporadic synchronous endometrial and ovarian cancers (SEOCs) of endometrioid histology may be clonally related. We sought to characterize the clinicopathologic characteristics and outcomes of patients with SEOC compared to those with endometrial carcinoma felt to have metastasis to the ovaries. Methods: All patients with endometrial cancer who underwent primary surgery at our institution from 06/1993- 09/2014 were identified. We included cases with carcinoma in the endometrium and ovary. Pathology reports were reviewed to determine the pathologist’s assessment of whether the ovarian carcinomas were likely synchronous or metastatic. Patients with stage IV endometrial carcinoma, irrespective of presence of ovarian disease, were excluded. Appropriate statistical tests were performed. Results: We identified 76 eligible cases; 19 were deemed SEOCs and 57 endometrial carcinoma with ovarian metastasis (ECOM). Median age was 52 years (range, 32-71) and 63 years (range, 43-89), respectively (p = 0.4). Non-endometrioid histology was observed in 21% of SEOCs compared with 58% of ECOMs (p = 0.006). There was no myoinvasion in 32% of SEOCs compared with 9% of ECOMs (p = 0.01). Endometriosis was noted in 58% of SEOCs compared with 4% of ECOMs (p < 0.0001). The median follow-up time was 44.2 months (range, 0.4-201.4) for the entire cohort. The 4-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 82% (SE+/-9.5) for SEOCs and 51.6% (SE+/- 7) for ECOMs (p = 0.06). The 4-year overall survival (OS) rates were 94.7% (SE+/-5.1) for SEOCs and 69.8% (SE+/-6.2) for ECOMs (p = 0.046). The 4-year PFS rates for cases of endometrioid histology alone were 84% (SE+/-10.6) for SEOCs and 77.8% (SE+/-8.87) for ECOMs (p = 0.97). The 4-year OS rates for cases of endometrioid histology alone were 93.3% (SE+/-8.4) and 81.9% (SE+/-8.2), respectively (p = 0.3). Conclusions: SEOC was associated with more favorable endometrial factors and with the presence of endometriosis, consistent with the notion that these are likely dissemination by retrograde flux. SEOC was associated with better survival outcomes but not when analyzing endometrioid histology alone.

Abstract:
Background: The oral health of preschool-age children can affect their quality of life (QoL) as well their families. The Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) is a reliable instrument that has been used to assess the impact of oral health problems and their treatment on the QoL of preschool-age children and their families’. Objective: To report the development, evaluation and psychometric properties of the Greek version of ECOHIS (Gr-ECOHIS). Methods: Participants of this cross-sectional study were 176 mothers and their young (aged 25-71 months) children, patients of a private pediatric dental practice. During a structured interview, they completed a questionnaire, including a translated, Greek language version of the ECOHIS. Data on children’s oral health were obtained via clinical examinations. The psychometric properties of Gr-ECOHIS evaluated were reliability (internal and test-retest) and construct (convergent and discriminant) validity. Test-retest reliability was determined in an independent sample of 20 mother-child dyads, who completed the Gr-ECOHIS twice within a two-week interval. Results: The scale showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha=0.85) and test-retest reliability (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient= 0.97). Gr-ECOHIS showed a strong correlation with dental caries (Spearman’s rho=0.62, p<0.0005) and dental treatment needs. Gr-ECOHIS was also positively associated with dental knowledge, health literacy and parental oral health-related QoL. Conclusion The Gr-ECOHIS is a psychometrically reliable and valid Greek language QoL instrument, which demonstrated significant associations with clinical and parent-reported measures of early childhood oral health. As such, it can be used to measure oral health-related QoL among preschool-age children in clinical and public health settings.

Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS). A total of 247 children aged 2 to 5 years and their parents/guardians participated in this study. A clinical oral examination was performed and the parents/guardians completed the ECOHIS questionnaire. Within a period of four-weeks, 20% of the participants repeated the ECOHIS questionnaire. Construct validity was determined using Spearman's rank correlation. Discriminant validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability were also evaluated. The children were divided into 2 groups: group 1 (with dental caries) and group 2 (caries-free). Children with caries showed higher mean ECOHIS scores than the caries-free children. The child impact section (p < 0.01), family impact section (p < 0.01) and total ECOHIS scores (p < 0.01) were significantly correlated with tooth decay. Cronbach's alpha coefficients demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency. The Brazilian version of the ECOHIS is a valid instrument for assessing oral health-related quality of life in preschool children with Brazilian Portuguese-speaking primary caregivers.

Abstract:
Objective: To determine whether dental treatment under general anesthesia (GA) improved oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in pre-school children, to evaluate the sensitivity and responsiveness of the Turkish version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) and to examine parental satisfaction with the care received. Study design: The parents/caregivers of 120 pre-school children receiving dental treatment under GA, were asked to complete the ECOHIS before and after treatment. Participants were also asked a global transition judgement concerning change in their child's condition after treatment. Global transition judgement and distribution changes in ECOHIS scores were used to assess the sensitivity and responsiveness. Results: 98 children completed the follow-up survey. Between pre- and post-treatment ECOHIS scores, significant reduction was observed (p<0.001). The effect sizes were moderate and large (0.36 to 1.63). Global transition rating groups were compatible with statistical differences between pre- and post-treatment scores, supporting the responsiveness of the ECOHIS. 91% of parents regarded the experience to be positive. Conclusions: Children's OHRQoL showed significant improvement after treatment. The majority of parents reported a high degree of satisfaction. Also, Turkish version of the ECOHIS was sensitive to dental treatment under GA for pre-school children and responsive to treatment-associated changes.

Abstract:
Introduction: During 2007. in the U.S. was developed the questionnaire for caregivers with 13 items for assessing the oral health-related quality of life in children 3-5 years of age, The Early Childhood Oral Health ImpactScale, The ECOHIS. The aim of this study was to perform the fi rst part of the adaptation process for this instrument in Bosnia-Herzegovina: translation, cross-cultural adaptation and the comprehensibility testing. Methods: ECOHIS was translated from English into the one of the languages in Bosnia-Herzegovina using a standardized forward-backward translation method. Two licensed, professional English-language translators, one dentist and one pediatrician, participated in the development of the preliminary BH-ECOHIS version. All translators were native Bosnian speakers. After translation and adaptation of ECOHIS to Bosnia and Herzegovina setting, pilot-research was performed in order to check the comprehensibility of the questionnaire. Results: The original and the back-translated version were the same. Because not all children in Bosnia-Herzegovina attend preschool, school or daycare, we replaced the question number fi ve from the originalEnglish version “missed preschool, daycare or school“ with “had difficulties in everyday activities”. Translated and culturally adapted version of the ECOHIS was applied in a form of an interview (N=16). Parents/caregivershad no diffi culties to understand the questionnaire. Conclusions: BH-ECOHIS showed excellent comprehensibility. Next step in the validation process should be the testing of its measurement characteristic.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This is a Liberian perspective on the unique initiative by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to resolve the Liberian conflict by organizing and deploying a Peace Monitoring Group in Liberia. It considers whether ECOWAS’ initiative can become a self-reliant security system that can end a civil war and institutionalize deterrence to subregional inter-state and internal conflicts. Can this self-generated, West African initiative set the stage for democratization? Is the initiative the start of an inter-African cooperative security system? Is the model of Nigerian leadership a harbinger of a regional hegemony in the making? Is the modest role of the USA constructive in resolving the conflict, in light of the fact that Liberia is a country with which the USA has had an historic relationship?

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this study was to compare the administration of the Brazilian version of Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) questionnaire, applied by face-to-face and telephone format. A randomized sample of 76 parents/guardians of children up to 6 years old was selected in a Pediatric Dentistry Clinic of the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil. Patients were randomly selected for 2 different groups, according to administration sequence: F-T (Face-to-face-Telephone) and T-F (Telephone-Face-to-face). Two interviewers administered the ECOHIS questionnaire with 2 week interval between the methods. The reliability between sections of the different methods of administration was assessed by Cronbach's alpha and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). There were differences in means of the ECOHIS between face-to-face and telephone methods. However, the value Cronbach's alpha were between 0.94-0.96, and value ICC ranged from 0.91-0.93, proving to be acceptable values. The Bland-Altman plots confirmed the results of reliability tests, supporting the accuracy of the methods. Although there is a slight difference in the scores, the use of both mode of administration of the ECOHIS yields reliable data when single method is used from the beginning to the end of the study. The results provided evidence to use either Face-to-face or Telephone method of administration of the ECOHIS

Abstract:
Purpose: The oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of preschool children with Early Childhood Caries (ECC) was used to assess the outcome of dental treatment. Study design: Children (3.56±1.31years) affected by ECC were selected. Anamnesis, clinical and radiographic exams were performed. Data about sociodemographic aspects, OHRQoL and dmf-t index were collected. The Brazilian version of Early Childhood Oral health Impact Scale (B-ECOHIS) was applied in two time intervals: before and after 30 days of treatment. B-ECOHIS scores and effect size (ES) were used to evaluate the OHRQoL of preschool children. The Student's-t test was used for comparison between the B-ECOHIS averages, considering the following aspects: gender, age, socioeconomic status, severity of caries and type of treatment. Results: The mean dmf-t was 6.25±4.20 and no differences between boys (6.00±4.32) and girls (6.83±4.35) (p=0,942) were found. Pain and psychological problems among children and parents feeling upset and guilty were the most frequently reported impacts at baseline. There was a greater impact on girls (17.67±8.68) than on boys (13.30±10.53) (p<0.001); and on children younger than 4 years (16.71±9.96) (p<0.05). The highest B-ECOHIS scores were observed in treatments involving dental extractions and space maintainers. There was no difference between the total B-ECOHIS scores of subjects from middle (16.24±10.30) and lower socioeconomic classes (15.97±10.26). The total scores of B-ECOHIS and its domains decreased after 30-day follow-up. Dental rehabilitation of preschool children showed a large effect size for these subjects (ES=1.19) and their families (ES=1.00). Conclusion: Dental treatment resulted in significant improvement of the preschool children's OHRQoL.

Abstract:
In this study, we introduce a new approach for determination of epidemiologic cutoffs (ECOFFs) and resistant-population cutoffs (RCOFFs) based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. As an example, the method was applied for determination of ECOFFs for seven different beta-lactam antibiotics and wild-type populations ofEscherichia coli,Klebsiella pneumoniae, andEnterobacter cloacae. In addition, RCOFFs were determined for bacterial populations with defined resistance mechanisms (“resistotypes”), i.e., extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-positiveE. coli, ESBL-positiveK. pneumoniae, and ESBL-positiveE. cloacae; AmpC cephalosporinase-positiveE. coliand AmpC-positiveK. pneumoniae; and broad-spectrum beta-lactamase (BSBL)-positiveE. coli. RCOFFs and ECOFFs are instrumental for a systematic characterization of associations between resistotypes and wild-type populations.

Abstract:
As systems that model complex relationships, digital games encourage players to enact Morton's "ecological thought" through the actions players perform within the game world. Yet these representations, as Alenda Chang (2011) has noted, "commit at least one if not all of the following missteps in their realization of in-game environments: relegating environment to background scenery, relying on stereotyped landscapes, and predicating player success on extraction and use of natural resources" (58). In other words, the flora and fauna players find are often reduced to non-interactive set pieces, thereby stripping actions of the ecological and environmental impact they could have. Despite these problems, ecocritical approaches to digital games have sought to re-assert the significance of connections between game ecologies and their environmental representations by tracing cultural associations (Bianchi, Barton), and by investigating problems with materiality and waste (Apperley and Jayemanne). This essay builds on these approaches by considering “modding,” short for “modifications,” as an area for ecocritical intervention in the flattening of games' environmental representations. Specifically, this essay examines the thriving environmental modding communities around Bethesda Softworks’ The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Although some of the mods released for Skyrim emphasize visual enhancements, others re-connect players to the game’s ecology and environment in meaningful ways.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives To determine the epidemiological cut-off values (ECOFFs) of norvancomycin for Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Staphylococcus hominis. Methods We collected 1199 clinical isolates of Staphylococcus species from five laboratories located in four cities in China. MICs and inhibitory zone diameters of norvancomycin were determined by broth microdilution and the disc diffusion method, separately. ECOFFs of norvancomycin for four species were calculated by ECOFFinder software following EUCAST principles. Methicillin and vancomycin resistance genes (mecA/mecC and vanA/vanB/vanC/vanD/vanE) were screened for by PCR in all isolates. Pearson correlation and χ2 test were used to calculate the correlation of MICs and inhibition zone diameters, and MICs and resistance genes, respectively. Results MICs of norvancomycin for all strains from five laboratories fell in the range of 0.12–2 mg/L. ECOFFs of norvancomycin were determined to be 2 mg/L for S. epidermidis and S. haemolyticus and 1 mg/L for S. aureus and S. hominis. A weak correlation was observed between MIC values and zone diameters for S. haemolyticus (r = −0.36) and S. hominis (r = −0.26), while no correlation was found for S. epidermidis and S. aureus. The mecA gene was detected in 63.1% of Staphylococcus, whereas no isolate carried mecC, vanA, vanB, vanC, vanD or vanE. ECOFFs of norvancomycin were not correlated with mecA gene carriage in Staphylococcus species. Conclusions ECOFFs of norvancomycin for four Staphylococcus species were determined, which will be helpful to differentiate WT strains. The correlation of MICs and zone diameters of norvancomycin was weak in Staphylococcus species.

Abstract:
The role of Nigeria in conflict resolution and peacekeeping efforts in Africa and other parts of the world cannot be overemphasised. The country has contributed more than 200,000 soldiers to peacekeeping missions around the world since independence. These efforts have earned it much respect in the council of nations and the recognition as being the ‘giant of Africa’. Also, Nigeria has been regarded as a ‘regional hegemon’ by some scholars because of its population size, comparatively large economic and human resources, and a bigger and well-equipped armed forces, equal in numerical strength to the armed forces of all the other countries in West Africa combined. The country played a very important role at spearheading the formation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Ceasefire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in the 1990s. It has contributed the highest fund in defraying the costs of ECOMOG deployment to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Cote d’Ivoire and Mali. This study analyses the hegemonic tendencies of Nigeria in the sub-region of West Africa. It argues that although the country is the most populous and the biggest economy in the sub-region but it does not possess the military, economic and the international support to function as a hegemonic power in West Africa.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives The influence of the administration method used to collect oral health–related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children remains largely unknown. The aim of this study was to determine whether the OHRQoL information obtained using the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) differed with different methods of data collection (face-to-face interview, telephone, or self-administered questionnaire). Materials and methods The OHRQoL of 38 preschool children, aged 1 to 5 years, was measured using the German version of the ECOHIS. The instrument was administered to the caregivers of these children using three different methods, with an interval of 1 week between each administration. Test-retest reliability for the repeated ECOHIS-G assessments across the three methods of administration, agreement, and convergent validity was determined. Results Kappa coefficients for agreement between two different methods of administration, respectively, ranged from moderate to substantial (0.47 to 0.65). Test-retest reliability was moderate (ICC 0.65–0.79). Conclusion In conclusion, the three methods of administration (face-to-face interview, telephone interview, or self-administered questionnaire) of the ECOHIS-G were comparable in 1- to 5-year-old preschool children. Clinical relevance All three methods of administration can be used to obtain valid and reliable OHRQoL information in German speaking countries.

Abstract:
Background: In Austria, almost every second child has caries. The consequences of untreated carious lesions are infections, pain, and limitations in everyday life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) treatment on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of uncooperative children aged 0–5 years using the German version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS-G). Methods: This prospective study was conducted at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry at the Medical University of Vienna. Preschool children with behavioral problems and carious lesions that required SDF application were included. The ECOHIS-G questionnaire was given to the caregiver before (T0) and three months (T1) after treatment. Using descriptive analysis and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test, changes in the ECOHIS scores were evaluated and tested for significance. Results: A total of 30 children aged 0–5 years were enrolled and received SDF treatment. At baseline, the total ECOHIS score was 21.4 (±8.5). Three months after therapy, a significant improvement was achieved (16.3 [±5.6], p < 0.05). Significantly better scores were observed in six subdomains, especially in “child function” (3.9 [±2.0]) and “child symptoms” (2.0 [±1.3]) (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Treatment of carious lesions with SDF in the primary dentition resulted in an improvement in the OHRqoL of children with behavioral problems.
