Abstract:

Henderson, Jeffrey. Hesiod and Comedy. Edited by Alexander C. Loney and Stephen Scully. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190209032.013.20.

Abstract:
Comic dramas, attested as early as the later sixth century bce in Sicily and from ca. 486 bce in Attica, reflect familiarity with Hesiodic poetry from the time our actual documentation begins in the 470s for Sicily and 430s for Attica and into the mid-fourth century bce. Comic poets engaged with Hesiodic poetry at the level of specific allusion or echo and (more frequently) with Hesiodic stories, thought, themes, ideas, and style, now common cultural currency. They also engaged with the poet and his poetic persona, whether bracketed with Homer as a great cultural authority, distinguished as the anti-Homer in subjects or style, or showcased as an emblematic persona of poet and (didactic) sage. Aristophanes, for one, adopted elements of the Hesiodic persona in fashioning his own.

Abstract:
Henry Reynolds’s Mythomystes (1632) is a dynamic response to the tensions between Neo-Platonic claims for the divinity of ancient poetry and a Protestant poetics that rejected syncretism and sought to set the truth of Christianity apart. Reynolds draws on Pico della Mirandola to emphasize the divine knowledge of the ancient pagan poets, who were ‘iointrunners’ with Moses and used fables for the secret communication of wisdom. But in other parts of the book Reynolds carefully separates the pagan and Christian traditions in everything but natural knowledge. These different perspectives can be explained by the rising and falling rhetorical pitch of the mythography and can be compared to Philip Sidney’s practice in his Defence of Poetry. In the end, Reynolds’s mythography returns to a Neo-Platonic conception of the ancient fables, and offers a version of the Narcissus myth that rests upon a Pythagorean symbol.

LeVen, Pauline A. Echo and the Invention of the Lyric Listener. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198805823.003.0010.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the notion of lyric listening and concentrates on the particular role of the adverb δηὖτε‎ (‘once again’) in constructing a poetics of delayed repetition in several archaic melic poets (Alcman, Sappho, and Anacreon). Building on the model provided by a reading of the mythical nymph Echo in Longus’ Daphnis and Chloe to understand the seduction and role of delay and repetition in lyric listening, it is argued that ‘once again’ works as a form of gramophone, allowing the listener of the poem to experience the immediacy of poetry through the imagined distance and delay introduced by the adverb.

Abstract:
Between late antiquity and the fifteenth century, theologians, philosophers, and poets struggled to articulate the correct relationship between sound and sense, creating taxonomies of sounds based on their capacity to carry meaning. This book traces how medieval thinkers adopted the concept of noise as a mode of lay understanding grounded in the body and the senses. With a broadly interdisciplinary approach, the book examines a range of literary genres to highlight the poetic and social effects of this vibrant discourse, offering close readings of works by Geoffrey Chaucer and William Langland, as well as the mystics Richard Rolle and Margery Kempe. Each of these writers embraced an embodied experience of language resistant to clear articulation, even as their work reflects inherited anxieties about the appeal of such sensations. A preoccupation with the sound of language emerged in the form of poetic soundplay at the same time that mysticism and other forms of lay piety began to flower in England. As the book shows, the presence of such emphatic aural texture amplified the cognitive importance of feeling in conjunction with reason and was a means for the laity — including lay women — to cultivate embodied forms of knowledge on their own terms, in precarious relation to existing clerical models of instruction. The book offers a deep history of the cultural and social hierarchies that coalesce around aesthetic experience and gives voice to alternate ways of knowing.
