Abstract:
Plastic production has become a global concern, including in Bangladesh. Among all types of plastic products, single-use plastic is considered treacherous and the most responsible for damaging the natural environment. To replace plastics on a daily usage basis, the entrepreneurs of Bangladesh have reiterated some initiatives to manufacture and promote plastic alternatives. This study aims to assess the market potential, existing challenges, and users’/customers’ perceptions of the plastic alternative industry in Bangladesh. Key informant interviews (KIIs) with structured questionnaires were conducted among 15 plastic alternative entrepreneurs and 30 customers through online platforms. The framework analysis method was used to analyse and interpret the collected data. Despite highlighting some challenges, plastic alternative entrepreneurs contribute significantly to replacing plastic products, and the market potential is quite promising for this industry. Moreover, this study portrays an efficacious inclination of consumer behaviours towards using plastic alternatives. By following the concept of the green economy, the entrepreneurs of the plastic alternative industry in Bangladesh are gradually able to replace plastic products and contribute toward building a sustainable city

Abstract:
This study aims to (1) analyze of the old buildings in the green building environment of Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI); and (2) looking for best alternatives in managing the building by maintaining the old building in order to meet the criteria of environmentally friendly. The sample in this research is building at Civil Engineering Building Vokasi Universitas Gadjah Mada. Methods in eco-friendly building measurements use the criteria in greenship GBCI version 1.1 through observation. The best alternative model in eco-friendly building used best available and best achievable technology for buildings. The results showed that: (1) the building at the Department of Civil Engineering Vocational School of Gadjah Mada University meets the criteria of environmentally friendly in accordance with GBCI greenship of 29.63%; and (2) eco-friendly model of green building management on maintenance of buildings by saving energy, reducing waste and pollution, and using non-toxic materials.

Bio-based leather substitutes are an emerging class of ethically and environmentally responsible natural fabrics that are increasingly exceeding consumer aesthetic and functional expectations as an alternative to bovine and synthetic leathers. This literature review creates a clear and elaborative overview of conventional leather processing along with innovative potential bio-leather substitutes. Plant-driven, fungal-origin, bacterial-driven, and animal-origin bio-leathers are the current innovative research advances addressed in this literature. While traditional leather and its alternatives are sourced from animals and synthetic polymers, these renewable and sustainable leather substitutes are gained from bacterial cellulose, mycelium, plant cellulose, and animal cells using tissue engineering and other eco-friendly techniques. In conclusion, bio-based leather alternatives are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and sustainable and ultimately can substitute natural leather made by conventional processing.

Peningkatan transaksi di marketplaces menyebabkan lonjakan jumlah pengiriman paket belanja online dan berimplikasi pada timbulan sampah yang didominasi oleh material plastik. Penerapan eco-friendly packaging di marketplaces sangat diperlukan dalam upaya mengurangi timbulan sampah dan dampak negatifnya terhadap lingkungan. Upaya ini pun akan mendukung pencapaian Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) poin 12.5 yaitu mengurangi timbulan sampah secara substansial pada tahun 2030 melalui upaya pencegahan, pengurangan, daur ulang, dan penggunaan kembali. Penelitian bertujuan untuk 1) mengidentifikasi bentuk-bentuk eco-friendly packaging yang potensial diterapkan di marketplaces, 2) menganalisis preferensi konsumen terhadap penggunaan eco-friendly packaging, dan 3) merumuskan strategi penerapan eco-friendly packaging di marketplaces. Studi literatur, analisis deskriptif kualitatif, dan Contingent Choice Modelling (CCM) digunakan untuk menjawab tiga tujuan tersebut. Penelitian ini memformulasi sembilan alternatif eco-friendly packaging yang dapat diterapkan di marketplaces. Data diperoleh dari literatur dan survei secara blended terhadap 314 responden di Provinsi DKI Jakarta, Jawa Barat, dan Jawa Tengah. Studi literatur menunjukkan recyclable cardboard dan bioplastic dapat menjadi alternatif eco-friendly packaging yang paling relevan untuk marketplaces di Indonesia karena murah dan bahan terbaik. Analisis CCM mengungkap bahwa konsumen berminat terhadap eco-friendly packaging, mayoritas mengetahui manfaat penggunaannya dan bersedia untuk menggunakannya dengan total WTP maksimum sebesar Rp1.348,47 dan Rp4.237,80. Nilai Willingness to Pay (WTP) berpotensi meningkat jika konsumen diberikan edukasi manfaat eco-friendly packaging, dan berdomisili di DKI Jakarta. Lima strategi agar implementasi eco-friendly packaging di marketplaces dapat efektif, yaitu 1) menetapkan harga maksimum eco-friendly packaging sebesar Rp1.348,47, 2) memberikan edukasi manfaat eco-friendly packaging, 3) bila pilot project diperlukan, DKI Jakarta dapat menjadi provinsi percontohan, 4) memberikan voucher eco-friendly packaging, serta 5) mewujudkan kerja sama antara pemerintah, marketplaces, penjual, dan konsumen. Pemerintah dapat menetapkan regulasi yang meminta marketplaces untuk menyediakan opsi eco-friendly packaging pada fitur pemilihan kemasan serta pemberian edukasi dan promosi penggunaan eco-friendly packaging untuk menarik minat konsumen.ABSTRACTMarketplaces have increased the number of online-shopping package shipments and waste generation, which is dominated by plastic materials. Eco-friendly packaging is imperative to reduce waste generation including its negative environmental impacts. This effort is inline with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 12.5 i.e. by 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources. This study aims to 1) identify forms of eco-friendly packaging that to be applied in marketplaces, 2) analyze consumer preferences for eco-friendly packaging, and 3) formulate strategies for implementing eco-friendly packaging in marketplaces. Study literature, descriptive analysis and contingent choice modeling (CCM) were used to answer the objectives. CCM formulated nine alternatives of eco-friendly packagings which can be applied in marketplaces. Data were obtained from literature stud and blended surveys to 314 respondents living in DKI Jakarta, West Java and Central Java provinces. The results show that recyclable cardboard and bioplastic can be an alternative to eco-friendly packaging in marketplaces. CCM analysis reveals that consumers are interested in eco-friendly packaging, most of them are aware to its benefits and willing to use it with a maximum total WTP of IDR 1,348.47 and IDR 4,237.80. These WTPs could increase under two conditions i.e., if the benefits of eco-friendly packaging are described to consumers before they select the packaging and if the consumers are living in DKI Jakarta province. Five strategies for the implementation of eco-friendly packaging in marketplaces include 1) setting the maximum price for eco-friendly packaging at Rp1,348.47, 2) providing education on the benefits of eco-friendly packaging, 3) if a pilot project is needed, DKI Jakarta province can become a pilot province, 4) provide eco-friendly packaging vouchers, and 5) create cooperation between the government, marketplace, sellers, and consumers. The government could set a regulation which ask marketplaces to provide eco-friendly packaging options in the packaging selection features as well as educating and promoting the use of eco-friendly packaging to gain consumer’s interest.

The study aims to suggest fundamental alternatives for future research on the eco-friendly performance of employees in food service companies by investigating the relationship between ethical leadership, environmental, organizational culture, and eco-friendly performance in food service companies. Ethical leadership in this study is operationalized as temperance, courage, fairness, and prudence, while environmental, organizational culture, and eco-friendly performance are conceptualized as single factors. The study was limited to employees of food service companies in the Seoul area, and a convenience sampling method was used to conduct an online (Google) survey. The hypothesis was tested through a sequence of statistical analyses, including frequency analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, discriminant validity, and structural equation model analysis. This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the influence of ethical leadership, environmental, organizational culture, and eco-friendly performance in food service companies. The study's results support existing theoretical research and provide practical implications for food service companies' operation plans and employees' eco-friendly performance.

An experiment on eco-friendly approach of managing pulse beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis L.) in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L) was carried out at the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS), Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal from April to July, 2007. The experiment consisted of fourteen treatments laid out in two factors Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Among them, storage structure (aluminium sheet bin and jute bag with plastic lining) was considered as one factor and pesticidal materials (Xanthoxylum armatum DC fruit dust@ 30gm kg-1; Acorus calamus L. rhizome dust@ 30 gm kg-1; Cinnamom camphora balls@ 1.5 gm kg-1; Sesamum indicum L. oil@ 5 ml kg-1; Azadirachta indica A. Juss. leaf dust@30gm kg-1; malathion dust@ 1gm kg-1 and control) was as another factor. Among six pesticidal materials tested, mortality of adult bruchids was obtained significantly higher in chickpea treated by C. camphora balls (25.17) followed by A. calamus rizome dust (24.83) and Sesamum oil (24.50). Grain damage and weight loss was nil in chickpea treated by these three materials. Among botanicals used, X. armatum fruit dust and A. indica leaf dust were found ineffective to cause adult mortality (20.33 and 19.67) and adult emergence (1549 and 2292) in chickpea. Malathion, initially was found somewhat effective in adult mortality (21.67) and adult emergence (30.33). However, it was less effective from F2 generation resulting maximum adult emergence (2127). While comparing two storage structures, jute bag with plastic lining was better in terms of maintaining lower moisture (14.64%), higher germination (65.14%) and lesser grain damage (39.95%). Thus, the jute bag with plastic lining was found as a better storage structure and botanical materials such as A. calamus rhizome dust, Sesamum oil and C. camphora balls have been found as effective safe alternatives for the management of C. chinensis L. in the storage of chickpea. Abstract:
Pressure is mounting in the construction industry to adopt more environmentally sustainable methods to reduce CO2 emissions. Portland cement (PC) often constitutes to more than two-thirds of the embodied energy of concrete, and its production generates 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. One efficient strategy to reduce the cement content without sacrificing performance is the use of particle packing models (PPM) to mix- proportion concrete mixtures with low cement content, the so-called low cement content (LCC) concrete. If on the one hand LCC was seen to be an effective sustainable alternative to the construction industry, its mechanical behaviour, durability and long-term performance are still under debate and thus further research is needed in the area. In this project, continuous PPM theories were used to mix- design structural concrete mixes presenting distinct mechanical properties (i.e. 25 & 35 MPa) and cement contents. Their performance was evaluated in the fresh and hardened states, and gaps, recommendations, and further needs were highlighted. Results show that the use of PPM enables the development of LCC systems, showing impressive hardened state performance (i.e. higher compressive strength and modulus of elasticity and lower electrical resistivity) and low carbon footprint. However, challenges in the fresh state were faced, which may be potentially solved with the use of chemical admixtures, fillers and/or supplementary cementing materials (SCMs).

Abstract:
Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most promising bio-compostable and biodegradable thermoplastic made from renewable sources. PLA, is typically obtained by polymerising lactide monomer. The technique mainly used for ring opening polymerization (ROP) of Lactide is based on metallic/bimetallic catalyst (Sn, Zn, and Al) or other organic catalysts in suitable solvent. However, the PLA synthesized using such catalysts may contain trace elements of the catalyst, which may be toxic. In this work, reactive extrusion experiments using stannous octoate Sn(Oct)2 and tri-phenyl phosphine (PPh)3 were considered to perform ROP of lactide monomer using ultrasound as an alternative energy (AE) source for activating and/or boosting the polymerization. Mathematical model of ROP of lactide, was developed to estimate the impact of reaction kinetics and AE source on the polymerization process. Ludovic® software, a commercial code was used. It was adopted for the simulation of continuous reactive extrusion of PLA. Results from experiments and simulations were compared to validate the simulation methodology. Results indicate that the application of AE source in reaction process boost the PLA formation rate. Result obtained through Ludovic simulation and experiments were validated. It was shown that there is a case for reducing the residence time distribution (RTD) in Ludovic due to the ‘liquid’ monomer flow in the extruder. This change in the parameters resulted in validation of the simulation. However, it was concluded that the assumption would have to be established by doing further validations. The simulation model includes the details of kinetics of reactions involved with in the process and helps to upscale the reaction output. This work also estimates the usefulness and drawbacks of using different catalysts as well as effect of alternative energies and future aspects for PLA production.

Taip pat sudaroma kompiuterinė sistema, padedanti vartotojui išsirinkti racionaliausią ekologiškų medžiagų panaudojimo variantą. Darbą sudaro trys dalys. Pirmojoje dalyje apžvelgiama ekologiškų statybinių medžiagų samprata, pagrindiniai principai, aprašomas statybinių medžiagų gyvavimo ciklas, aptariama aplinkai nekenksmingų medžiagų situacija Europoje. Antrojoje dalyje plačiau aprašomos gamtai nekenksmingos statybinės medžiagos, galimi tokių medžiagų konstrukciniai variantai. Analizuojami sienų, stogo dangos, šilumos izoliacijos ir šildymo sistemos pritaikymo galimybės statant ekologišką namą. Trečiojoje dalyje nagrinėjamas praktinis ekologiško namo konstrukcijų pritaikymo modelis. Sudaroma alternatyvų ir kriterijų sistema, apibūdinanti nekenksmingo aplinkai namo konstrukcinius elementus. Panaudojant kiekybinius ir kokybinius kriterijus ir galimas medžiagų alternatyvas, atliekama daugiakriterė statybinių medžiagų ir jų konstrukcijų analizė, sudaroma kompiuterinė sistema.
Ecological and environmentally friendly building materials and constructional options, that are used to build houses, are considered in this master work. It also contains the computer system enabling the user to choose the most rational option of ecological materials. This master work consists of three parts: In the first part the concept of ecological building materials and main principles are described. It also contains information about the life cycle of building materials and the situation of environmentally friendly materials in Europe are discussed. The second part describes environmentally friendly building materials and possible structural variations of such materials. It analyzes walls, roof, heat insulation and possibilities of heating system in the ecological house. In the third part the practical model of the ecological house is considered. An alternative and criteria system that describes the environmentally friendly house constructional elements is created. Using quantitative, qualitative criteria and possible material alternatives multiple criteria analysis of building materials and their construction is performed. The computer system is also made.

Abstract:
Nowadays a regulatory framework regarding the pollutant emissions abatement, both at international and local level, significantly interests the maritime sector. To comply with the latest environmental rules, a new approach to ship design and a renewed way to operate the ship are need both in navigation and in harbour. This PhD Thesis aims to investigate on the positive features offered by the LNG fuel, more eco-friendly than the traditional marine fuel oils. In the first part of the research, the performance comparison between two marine engines, fuelled by natural gas and diesel oil respectively is reported. Two different simulation codes, one for each engine, validated by means of geometrical and performance data provided by the manufacturer have been developed to extend the comparison to the whole working area of the examined engines. In the second part of the research, a LNG-repowering study of a cruise ferry is presented. The study is enhanced by the investigation on possible Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) systems aiming at the reduction of Green House Gas (GHG), pollution, and money saving. A computational code has been developed to carry out the sizing and to analyse the energetic performance and economical aspects of the several examined WHR layout systems. The more eco-friendly layout for the considered ship is proposed to comply with in force rules. The third part of the PhD Thesis is focused on studying some maritime technical solutions for the electric energy generation and delivery to ships moored in port, by means of LNG fuelled generators installed on board a floating unit. Two different scenarios, regarding the LNG supply chain, are considered and some options for producing cleaner electric energy are then investigated. The reference area examined in this study is the old port of Genoa, where the traffic of both passenger and cargo ships takes place. The analysis is carried out by means of a MATLAB numerical code to calculate the most important features of the floating unit, as dimensions and weights and the most significant characteristics of the electric generation equipment, as the average load factor, fuel consumption and energy cost. From an economical point of view, the externalities costs abatement, thanks to the technical solution proposed are investigated. The study also focuses on the estimation of governmental incentives to promote and sustain the use of the proposed power supply barge, resulting into a fully positive technical solution.

Abstract:
The research was carried out between the 2020 and 2022 growing seasons, in six different wine-growing regions of Romania, including the west, central, south, and east. The grapevine growing technology and production process were investigated, which were carried out differently depending on the soil and environmental resources in each growing area. The climatic conditions were also analyzed, as well as the influence on the production and quality of two grape cultivars for superior red wines grown in the researched areas. Soil management systems, fertilization, disease and insect control were investigated. At the same time, less invasive, eco friendly experimental alternatives were tested as an option to conventional technological versions. Observations and determinations were performed for each experimental alternative regarding the combined influence of the local microclimate and the different management on grape production and concentration in sugars, acidity, and vitamins. Although the grape yield was lower compared to the control variants, the experimental, less invasive and eco-friendly variants proved to be viable alternatives to the conventional ones. These experimental alternatives resulted in lower carbon emissions, less pollution, healthier viticultural products, and higher profits.

Microalgae are considered a promising alternative source of omega-3 long chain-polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 LC-PUFAs) since they are the primary producers of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids in the marine environment. Extraction methods commonly used for the isolation of these bioactives are based on conventional techniques, which imply the use of high volumes of organic solvents and high energy requirements, producing health and environmental problems. In this sense, greener alternatives need to be developed to meet the global consumer demand for natural ingredients and eco-friendly products. In this work, the use of ultrasonic-assisted enzymatic extraction (UAEE) technology in combination with environmentally friendly solvents was evaluated as a green strategy to efficiently extract the omega-3 lipids from the microalga Nannochloropsis gaditana. The microalgal biomass was pretreated with different commercial enzymes (Viscozyme® L, Celluclast® 1.5 L, and Saczyme® Yield) and the results were compared with the traditional Folch method (2:1 chloroform/methanol). A promising extraction approach was developed using Saczyme® Yield and ethanol as solvent, achieving a lipid yield of 25.7% ± 0.5, comparable to the results obtained with the traditional method (27.3% ± 0.7) (p > 0.05). Similar omega-3 content was found by GC-MS analysis for both lipid extracts (30.2% ± 2.9 and 29.2% ± 1.0 for the green and the traditional method, respectively), showing that the environmentally friendly approaches did not negatively affect the fatty acid profile. Additionally, the bioactivity of the produced lipids was investigated by a spectrum of in vitro cell-based assays measuring potential endpoints of interest like cytotoxicity, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. In conclusion, this work provides relevant results for new eco-friendly extraction approaches to produce functional omega-3 lipids with potential applications in the food industry, avoiding the use of toxic solvents and reducing the environmental impact.

With the recommendation from ABET, each engineering student should go through a major engineering design experience and understand how to go from design specifications to a final artifact. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS) started automotive design projects including competition vehicles and proof of concept vehicles for its undergraduate students many years ago. These projects aim to provide practical engineering education to the students through vehicle design and fabrication with hands-on experience. The project lifecycle usually does not last longer than one year as it is governed by the competition and the academic cycle. With many years of experience supervising students, the best practice of guiding students learning through this engineering design project within one academic year is developed. Before each project, students will first go through training and apprenticeship. Such project usually starts with problem formulation that studies the requirements of vehicle for the competition and the resources available. The team of students will go from design specifications to a final vehicle prototype with generating alternatives, synthesizing, analyzing, fabrication, testing and evaluating. This method allows sustainability in vehicle design projects. NUS Eco-car project is used as a case study to illustrate the best practice. Our past experience showed that students trained in this project have strong practical and analytical skills and are able to manage and communicate in a team well.

The packaging design is perceived as environmentally friendly when deploying established “green” conventions for design, materials, form, colours, and symbolism. The paper aims to determine which tea packaging design choices mainly influence consumer's impression of eco-friendliness. After the sustainable solutions for packaging form were examined, additional attributes of sustainability in terms of the materials were established. These were the shape of the packaging for the ease of use, closing solution, content visibility, printing paper perception, and other use-friendly attributes. Upon experimenting with six versions of prototype designs, following the guidelines of user-centered design, the final prototype has been selected for further development and testing. The alternatives for appropriate printing ink, printing pressure, and substrate were tested on various paper samples. Due to the various recycled substrate’s surface colours and morphology, the flexographic printing process resulted in various shades of image colours and line sharpnesses. To determine correlations between different attributes and make a final design decision, the subjective quality assessments were implemented.

The goal of sustainable development through the product innovation is a global challenge that Academia and Industries are addressing. The regulatory pressure and the growing demand of eco-friendly products by consumers are two of its main drivers, especially in the household appliances sector. For this aim, manufactures need to change the design approach in order to extend the boundaries of the benchmark analysis of possible innovations: (i) multi-objective criteria should be taken into account such as the environmental issues, costs, technical performances, etc., and (ii) a life cycle thinking has to be adopted to consider long terms benefits or impacts. However, the literature highlights the lack of structured methods able to support the R&D activity according to these perspectives. For this aim, the present paper provides a systematic approach, which exploits lifecycle and innovation tools to effectively support designers in the development of sustainable solutions in a long term perspective. The proposed approach has been applied in real case study to increase the energy efficiency of a domestic refrigerator. In particular, the insulation module has been redesigned by comparing several alternatives in terms of environmental performances and costs over the product lifespan to effectively evaluate the consistency of the developed eco-innovations.

In recent years, there have been increased concerns for the global warming and the exhaustion of resources caused by the heavy consumption of the fossil fuel. For this reason, biomass has been brought to great attention as a renewable source of energy to mitigate the situation. In this particular area, DME (dimethyl ether) fuel produced from biomass, biogas, and coal is expected to be useful as one of the eco-friendly synthetic fuel alternatives to petrodiesel. Diesel engine need fuel lubricity due to their severe condition (high pressure and temperature) but DME have low lubricity. In this study, we developed the analytic system for DME lubricity test which is pressurized chambered tester. Also we synthesized various of biodisel from 12 kinds of vegetable oil under base catalyst system. Oxygen compounds definitely contributed to the natural lubricity of fuel, biodiesel have ester group which is polar oxygenated functional group. After prepared test system and biodiesel as lubricant, we analyzed the lubricity of neat DME, neat biodiesels and DME-lubricant blended (100 ppm to 2000 ppm) fuel.

Pigments have important applications in various fields, such as colorants in food, cosmetic or textile industries and in biomedical applications. Dyes, especially azo dyes contained in wastewaters released from textile, pigment, and leather industries, are entering into natural waterbodies. Nonconventional biomass-based sorbents are the greatest attractive alternatives because of their low cost, sustainability, availability, and eco-friendly. In this work we use biomass produced from Black Soldier Fly exuviae for water treatment. The treatment used is based on an oxidative reagent able to degrade the aimed compounds, either by complete elimination or by reducing their environmental harmfulness. Hydrogen peroxide is a common reactant when it comes to wastewater oxidative treatments. Although it is a highly oxidative species, further activation by cleavage into hydroxyl radicals can be achieved by the presence of ozone, UV-light or transition metals.

Abstract. Oil-based plastics can meet several technical requirements in different industrial applications at a reasonable cost, but they can cause high environmental impact. Bioderived polyesters like PLA and PHAs, are, instead, eco-friendly alternatives to reduce the environmental burden caused by conventional plastics. In this respect, dynamic response and mechanical properties of 3D printed parts made in (PLA)/Poly-3-hydroxybuutyrate-4-hydroxybutyrate(P(3HB)(4HB)) were investigated. The blends were achieved by extrusion compounding of different amount of P(3HB)(4HB) (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%) in PLA. The resulting compounds were extruded to achieve customized self-made filaments, which were reprocessed by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) to get the final parts. Hence, the 3D printed parts were tested to evaluate their performance, all of them showing good compromise between mechanical strength and flexibility as well as valuable dynamic response, with high potential in many fields. In particular, it has been observed that the addition of 10% of P(3HB)(4HB) is the most performing solution because it allows to obtain a 50% increase relative to the Young’s Modulus.

Abstract Some conventional drilling fluid additives utilized to adjust drilling fluid properties can lead to many issues related to personnel safety and the environment. Thus, there is a need for alternative materials that have less impact on personnel safety and the environment. Many researchers have begun to investigate new alternatives, one example is food wastes. Due to their eco-friendly properties and their vast availability, food wastes are a good candidate that can be exploited as drilling fluid additives. In this work, five different concentrations of eggshells powder (ESP) were added to a reference fluid and the mud weight was measured using mud balance to understand the effects of ESP on mud weight. The results were compared with five concentrations of two commonly used drilling fluid additives - calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and barite. The findings showed that the drilling fluid blends with ESP have significantly outperformed the drilling fluid blends with barite and CaCO3 and for all concentrations in terms of mud weight improvement. The second best blends in terms of mud weight enhancement were the blends with barite and followed by the blends CaCO3. In conclusion, food waste material - ESP outperforming two of the most common drilling fluid additives shows a potential for ESP and other food wastes to be utilized as drilling mud additives in the petroleum industry. This will reduce the harmful chemicals disposed to the environment, reduce exposure risks of drilling crews to harmful chemicals, minimize drilling fluid cost, and revolutionize the industry while contributing to the economy overall.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) serve to minimize reliance on fossil fuels in the process of driving but still depend on these fuels indirectly in the EV charging process from the conventional grid. Thus, they cannot be considered greener completely unless they are charged from Renewable Energy Sources (RES). This study presents the state-of-art overview, status of EV charging technologies and comparison between various EV charging facilities. The paper reviews the role of EV portable chargers to reduce dependence on electricity grid and help to cope with technical challenges related to EV including driving-range anxiety, long charging time and lack of charging facilities. The study focuses on the status of latest research and development in the field of EV portable chargers throughout the world and comparative analysis between four commercially available EV portable chargers is performed to introduce a scope for improvement and development of efficient, reliable, eco-friendly and user convenient EV portable chargers.

Industrial soil contamination is frequently unearthed by transportation agencies during construction within the right-of-way. As a result, transportation agencies may experience construction delays. Soils co-contaminated with high-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HMW-PAHs) and metals are commonly encountered in Illinois and exhibit recalcitrance towards conventional treatment technologies. This issue is exacerbated in the fine-grained soils common to Illinois, where low-permeability and immense sorption capacity increase treatment complexity, cost, and duration. Contaminated sites are spatially and temporally restrictive and require rapid in situ treatments, whereas conventional soil remediation requires 1 to 3 years on average. Consequently, transportation agencies typically pursue excavation and off-site disposal for expediency. However, this solution is expensive, so a comparatively expeditious and affordable treatment alternative is needed to combat the increasing cost of hazardous waste disposal. The objective of this work was to develop an accelerated in situ treatment approach adaptable for use at any construction site to cost-effectively remove HMW-PAHs and metals from clayey soil. It was hypothesized that an in situ electrochemical treatment which augments electrokinetics with H2O2 could remediate both HMW-PAHs and metals in less than a month. Bench-scale reactors resemblant of field-scale in situ electrokinetic systems were designed and fabricated to assess the electrochemical treatment of clayey soils contaminated with HMW-PAHs and metals. Pyrene, chromium, and manganese were used as model contaminants, spiked into kaolinite as a model clay. Electrokinetics were imposed by a low-intensity electrical field distributed by graphite rods. Electrolytic H2O2 systems were leveraged to distribute electrical current and facilitate contaminant removal. Average contaminant removals of 100%, 42.3%, and 4.5% were achieved for pyrene, manganese, and chromium, respectively. Successful development of this bench-scale treatment approach will serve to guide transportation agencies in field-scale implementation. The results from this work signify that electrochemical systems that leverage eco-friendly oxidant addition can replace excavation and disposal as a means of addressing clayey soils co-contaminated with HMW-PAHs and metals.
