Abstract:
ABSTRACT Genes (ebrAB) responsible for ethidium resistance were cloned from chromosomal DNA of Bacillus subtilis ATCC 9372. The recombinant plasmid produced elevated resistance against ethidium bromide, acriflavine, pyronine Y, and safranin O not only inEscherichia coli but also in B. subtilis. It also caused an elevated energy-dependent efflux of ethidium in E. coli. EbrA and EbrB showed high sequence similarity with members of the small multidrug resistance (SMR) family of multidrug efflux pumps. Neither ebrA nor ebrB was sufficient for resistance, but introduction of the two genes carried on different plasmids conferred drug resistance. Thus, both EbrA and EbrB appear to be necessary for activity of the multidrug efflux pump. In known members of the SMR family, only one gene produces drug efflux. Thus, EbrAB is a novel SMR family multidrug efflux pump with two components.

Abstract:
Tilt effects on radiographic measurements after total hip arthroplasty should be studied. A new computerized method for measurement, called EBRA, making three-dimensional calculations and intended to identify tilted radiographs was evaluated for its clinical usefulness. In an experimental set-up repeated radiographs were taken with a human pelvis tilted gradually around its horizontal and vertical axes. Migration and wear were measured with the EBRA method and the results were compared with those made using standard methods. Tilted radiographs were identified and excluded from analysis by the EBRA method, significantly reducing the maximum error of measurement. A systematic error of measurement was found in the presence of consecutively changing tilt in a single direction. Wear measurements were only slightly affected by pelvic tilt. A pelvic tilt can cause considerable errors in the measurement of cup migration-i.e. up to 8.2 mm. The EBRA method improves the accuracy of measurements by taking the effects of tilt into account.

Abstract:
Balancing energy load is a key problem in wireless sensor network (WSN) research. For balancing node energy consumption and prolong the network lifetime, this paper proposes an improved routing algorithm EBRA (Energy Balancing Routing Algorithm) based on energy heterogeneous WSN. To maximize the energy efficiency of network nodes, the EBRA weights the probability of cluster head election. According to the estimate value of the network average remaining energy and the residual energy of network nodes, we can calculate the new cluster head election threshold. The simulation results show that the utilization of energy balance of EBRA algorithm is improved 74%, 30% and 23%, compare with LEACH, SEP and DCHS, respectively.

Abstract:
Brain research in Europe is a rapidly evolving field, and increasingly at the forefront of science. Although considerable amounts of knowledge and innovative approaches have been generated, the translation into new health interventions is hindered by excessive fragmentation. Effective and efficient collaboration and cooperation among the various initiatives are often identified as a key success factor to achieve brain research full impact. EBRA fully responds to these needs by bringing together the various stakeholders and major brain research initiatives, at European level and beyond. EBRA creates the conditions for real and effective cross fertilisation, dialogue, building consensus and exploiting research potential. On the operational level, EBRA facilitates the emergence of research projects in specific areas in active clusters. A cluster is understood as a research community that can be directed towards basic research, clinical research and/or methodological approaches under a common topic and disease area within brain research. EBRA support clusters to: 1. Consolidate or expand further the research community expand their community, 2. Engage with policy makers and other relevant stakeholders, 3. Build consensus on various issues (research priorities, research roadmap, data sharing, etc.), 4. Promote links with existing research infrastructures, 5. Increase the visibility of the research community through communication and dissemination activities, 6. Coordinate the development of position/consensus papers, white papers, guidelines, meeting reports and/or other cluster outcomes. EBRA currently has 6 existing clusters: EPICLUSTER, Prevention of Severe Mental Disorders (PSMD)-cluster, TRISOMY21-cluster, BRAINFOOD-cluster., PREMOS-cluster and ECIB-cluster.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Abstract:
Early recognition of prosthesis failure is difficult. A tool that helps to identify faulty prosthesis – a cause of early implant loosening – is needed. The aim of this study was to detect early implant loosening by applying a software program EBRA (Ein-Bild-Röntgen-Analyse). EBRA was applied to the radiographs of a series of 76 patients, with a total of 102 thumb carpometacarpal joint de la Caffinière prostheses, with an average follow-up of 14.5 months (range 0.5–24). The data were used to draw graphs of cup migration and inclination over time. Corresponding regression lines of migration and inclination in relation to time were made up to the point of loosening. The gradient of regression was calculated for all implants. The gradient of regression on the x and y axes differed significantly between stable and loose implants. Loose and stable implants showed significantly different cup migration on the x and y axes over time. EBRA proved to be a reliable tool to visualize cup migration in the trapeziometacarpal joint and to predict implant failure.

Abstract:
Background: Massive osteolysis of the proximal femur makes stem revision a challenging procedure. EBRA-FCA provides the opportunity to determine stem migration, which is considered a predictive factor for implant survival. In this study, we aimed to analyze the migration behavior of a modular, distally fixed reconstruction prosthesis. Methods: Applying a retrospective study design, we reviewed all consecutive patients who received a cementless MP reconstruction prosthesis (Waldemar Link GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg, Germany) at our Department between 2005 and 2019. We reviewed medical histories and performed radiological measurements using EBRA-FCA software. Results: A total of 67 stems in 62 patients (female 26; male 36) fulfilled our inclusion criteria. Mean age at surgery was 68.0 (range 38.7–88.44) years. EBRA migration analysis showed a median subsidence of 1.6 mm (range 0.0–20.6) at 24 months. The angle between stem and femur axis was 0.3° (range 0.0°–2.9°) at final follow-up. No correlation between body mass index and increased subsidence was found (p > 0.05). Overall revision-free rate amounted to 92.5% and revision-free rate for aseptic loosening to 98.5%. Furthermore, no case of material breakage was detected. Conclusions: In summary, the MP reconstruction prosthesis showed low subsidence and reduction in the migration rate over the investigated follow-up. Based on this, the modular stem can be considered as a good therapy option in challenging stem revisions offering various options to address the individual anatomical situation.

Therefore, an overview of the scale and scope of brain research activities funded in the EU framework programme and the funding initiatives of JPND, NEURON and HBP has been created. The results of the mapping exercise then underpinned the development of a Shared European Brain Research Agenda (SEBRA). The SEBRA focuses on research opportunities and research gaps to be addressed in the field, and priorities for action in the short- and long-term. It integrates pre-existing documents as well as expert (i.e., researchers, neurologists/psychiatrists, patient representatives) input that has been collected through surveys and in a dedicated expert workshop. The SEBRA will be used to provide recommendations on future areas for excellent, innovative, and translational research comprising those for maximized cooperation, reduced overlap, and fragmentation.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Abstract:
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can provide data acquisition for long-term environment monitoring, which are important parts of Internet of Things (IoT). In the WSN-assisted IoT, energy efficient routing algorithms are required to maintain a long network lifetime. In this paper, a DS evidence theory-based energy balanced routing algorithm for network lifetime enhancement (EBRA-NLE) in WSN-assisted IOT is proposed. From the perspective of energy balance and minimization of routing path energy consumption, three attribute indexes are established to evaluate the forward neighboring nodes. Then a route selection method based on DS evidence theory is developed to comprehensively evaluate the nodes and select the optimal next hop. In order to avoid missing the ideal solution because of the excessive difference between the index values, the sine function is used to adjust this difference. The simulation results show that the proposed EBRA-NLE has certain advantages in prolonging network lifetime and balancing energy between nodes.

Abstract:
Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is based on lidar technology, which although developed in the early 1960s, has only recently been incorporated into the study of geological outcrops. The main aim of this thesis is to take advantage of the potential of the TLS to provide new tools and methodologies focused on solving the main limitation found by the geologists when working in fluvial outcrops: acquire the degree of stratigraphic control required to detect, understand and characterize the high degree of spatial and temporal heterogeneity of fluvial successions. TLS data from 8 outcrops of the Huesca Fluvial Fan (Early Miocene, northern Spain) were acquired to this purpose. In addition, several detailed stratigraphic columns were measured and lithological samples from different types of sandstone bodies were collected. Based on this, the most relevant results obtained are as follows: * A comprehensive characterization of the fluvial facies that includes the petrological and petrophysical properties of the sandstone bodies. * A simple method using the VO to correct the heights and thicknesses of the sedimentary bodies measured in the stratigraphic columns. The main factors that may have influenced the measurements made with the Jacob’s staff have been studied and discussed. * A new method leading to obtain a virtual datum is presented in response to the need for further correlation procedures, especially in the absence of suitable datums. This virtual datum enables to achieve highly accurate and semiautomatic correlations within fluvial VO’s. Moreover, all the sedimentary successions of the outcrops can be automatically subdivided into the desired stratigraphic intervals (which can be later isolated) by only moving the virtual datum vertically. * The virtual datums were also used to establish a new procedure that leads to infer the relative stratigraphic positions of distant outcrops (more than 10 Km apart) inside the entire fluvial sequence. * A facies modelling has been performed using a new method to extract in a semiautomatic way the surfaces of the outcrop that belong to paleochannel exposures.

Abstract:
The present study aims to provide a solid background for river-floodplain restoration based in the response of aquatic communities, to changes in hydrological connectivity, environmental factors and human pressure across the floodplain of a Mediterranean river. The lateral hydrological connectivity was found to be the key factor structuring the habitats and aquatic communities of the Middle Ebro floodplain, while turbidity, salinity and nutrient status were secondary drivers. These factors created a template for the aquatic community development that enabled predictions about the taxonomic and functional patterns in those aquatic communities more likely to occur under particular conditions. In the Middle Ebro River, there are very few possibilities of new wetlands creation, while the diversity and functionality of the remaining ones are threatened by the limited hydrological connectivity. The objective of floodplains restoration should thus consist in re-establishing a wide range of wetland types in accordance with the river-floodplain potential of sustainability.

Abstract:
"Diatoms of the Ebro basin: Biodiversity and ecological state of water" TEXT: The aim of this PhD thesis is to contribute to the taxonomic knowledge of the epilithic diatom flora from the rivers of the Ebro basin and to determinate the water quality status in the studied area using benthic diatoms as indicators. The studied area is located inside the Water Quality Surveillance Network of the Ebro Water Agency, CHE (NE Spain). It includes the Ebro and Garona rivers and all the rivers and streams which run into them in the Spanish territory, mostly over a calcareous and sedimentary substrata. A total of 408 epilithic diatoms samples were collected from different environments and ecoregions within the limits of the network of the Ebro Water Agency, CHE (NE Spain) during the summers of 2005 (197 sites) and 2006 (211 sites). Epilithic diatom were sampled, and then treated to prepare permanent diatoms slides following the standard methods (European Committee for Standardization 2003, 2004). The number of taxa identified in the material studied amounted to 499 (492 a specific or infra specific level), belonging to 91 different genera. 361 taxa are presented in 751 light microscope micrographs regrouped in 25 plates. We noticed the presence of species considered rare or exotic for European freshwaters (Coste & Ector, 2000) such as Diadesmis confervacea; Achnanthidium catenatum, Reimeria uniseriata, Navicula kotschyi, Gomphoneis minuta and Didymosphenia geminata. A few diatoms species presented teratological forms have been detected in some localities. However, we could not find a direct relationship of these forms occurrence and any particular cause. In order to evaluate the water quality assessment, three diatoms indices were applied (Specific Pollution Index IPS, Biological Diatom Index BDI and European Index CEC). All of them correlated significantly with water physical and chemical variables, but SPI achieved better correlations, and is therefore to be the best diatom index to be applied in the Ebro basin, although in some cases it did not properly reflected special situations in this basin as calcareous headwaters. According to the cluster and canonical correspondence analyses, nutrient enrichment (from the headwaters to the mouth), environmental variables and impacts were to be the most important variables structuring diatom communities in the Ebro basin.

Rodríguez, Climent Sílvia. "Assessing the impacts of human activities on the fïsh assemblages from the Ebro Delta coastal lagoons: towards a sustainable management model." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/286469.

Full text
Abstract:
The Ebro Delta represents the most important wetland area in Catalonia, the second most important in Spain (after Doñana National Park) and one of the most important estuarine zones in Europe. Although relatively recently colonized by human population, it is considered a highly impacted area. The main objective of this PhD thesis was to assess the effects of two important human induced stressors on the fish fauna from Ebro Delta coastal lagoons: artisanal fisheries and water management. Moreover, this study aimed to describe the state of the art of the fish community composition and structure that remained unstudied for over 3 decades. Three specific objectives under the general one were pursued: (i) Study gillnet selectivity and its applicability as a management tool in combination with maturity studies; (ii) construction of a trophic model in order to evaluate the global impact of artisanal fisheries in the ecosystem and (iii) analyze the water management impact derived from the rice cultivation carried out in the area. The set of results obtained in this thesis pointed out that: (i) the artisanal fisheries management for the endangered Atherina boyeri seemed to be inadequate. The approach of combining gear selectivity and maturity studies was useful for the establishment of better management proposals for this species; (ii) the gradual reduction of the current fishing effort as the best strategy to ensure both artisanal fisheries sustainability and conservation of the Ebro Delta coastal lagoons’ fish community and (iii) the water management carried out in the coastal lagoons has caused the inversion of the hydrological cycle, has increased the presence of freshwater species (mostly introduced species) and has altered the fish community composition.

Abstract:
Migration associated with movements between breeding and wintering areas allow animals to maximize fitness in response to seasonal changes in resources (Dingle 2014). Some of the most incredible migrations in the animal world are performed by birds which are possibly one of the best-studied migratory groups. Prior to migration, birds accumulate fat stores that may account for up to 50% of their body mass (Nielsen and Riis 2013) and once these fat stores are depleted after a flight bout they are replenished at stopover sites along the migration route. Migration is a dangerous life stage, which means that migrants have higher probability of perish while migrating than non-migrants. The mortality rates during the migratory period may be at least 15 times higher compared to that in the stationary periods of the annual life cycle (Sillett and Holmes 2002). Moreover, imagine small passerine birds, many of them inexperienced birds, born only some months before the beginning of migration, sometimes weighting just 10g or less, flying by night thousands of kilometres to encounter new kinds of habitats (Mettke-Hofmann and Greenberg 2005), competition for food resources (Moore and Yong 1991), predators (Lindström 1989), and inclement weather (Newton 2007), all while needing to maintain adequate fat reserves to perform their long-distance flight successfully. In fact, migrant bird populations suffer nowadays a sustained decline as shown in analyses of bird population trends across Europe (Sanderson et al., 2006; Vickery et al. 2014), North America (Ballard et al. 2003) and East Asia (MacKinnon et al. 2012). This decline is strongly associated with the accumulative impact of certain human activities such as habitat loss (Aharon-Rotman 2016), hunting (Raine 2016, Clausen et al. 2017) and climate change (Jiao et al. 2016) on the areas used by birds in their migratory routes (Crick 2004), especially on stopover sites (Bairlein 2016). Understanding the quality and availability of highly used stopover sites is vital for migratory bird conservation (Mehlman et al. 2005) and to know where migratory birds stop during their migrations and how the sites function for migrants will provide information for conservation and management of suitable stopover areas and therefore, help in the development of full-life-cycle specific conservation plans. The Iberian Peninsula geographically connects Africa and Western Europe and migrants use it in transit between breeding and wintering grounds during both migration periods (Newton 2008). It becomes an ideal scenario for the study of migratory strategies (Bruderer and Liechti 1999) especially if we consider also Mediterranean wintering birds. This thesis focusses on the significance of the Ebro delta, as the second most important wetland in the Western Mediterranean, for the migration of songbirds and draw an overall picture of the way migrant passerines use the area as a stopover site. Since the Ebro delta is a highly humanized area where several important economic activities take place (e.g. rice production, hunting, fishing and tourism), as well as a very fragile territory due to severe problems of coastal regression and subsidence, the information here gathered aims to help in future conservation plans that should take into account not only breeding species but also wintering and migrating ones, what will give even more importance to this coastal wetland, which we must protect at all costs. Therefore, this thesis work overs the behaviour of both short/medium and long-distance migrants, i.e. Mediterranean wintering and trans-Saharan species, during their stopover at a coastal lagoon in the Ebro delta during both migration seasons (spring and autumn). The tool used to investigate the issues exposed above was a cheap one and available to everyone who asks for it: the ring-recovery data. Bird ringing is long used to study migration processes, and although nowadays more trendy and modern methods are available (e.g. satellite telemetry, geolocation loggers), not all of them are affordable to everyone who wants to use them. If we realize that the EURING Data Bank (EDB) is a unique set of mark–reencounter data on European birds with more than 10 million encounter records and that is at the disposal of the scientific and conservation communities (du Feu et al. 2016) and that ringing is still required as the key technique for facilitating our understanding of migration (Bairlein and Schaub 2009), we can use its potential to evaluate the importance of stopover areas and contribute to their conservation and also of the species that depend on these areas to survive. Of course, the new methods are very useful and sometimes a lot more precise and the combination of these methods with ringing data will improve considerably our knowledge about the migration phenomenon in the future. But while we look for financing to tag our birds with geolocators, let’s start working out the more basic questions.

Abstract:
Estudi geolingüístic" is a research assignment meant to make a proper description of the Catalan dialect spoken in each of the towns and villages in the Baix Ebre County Council. Keeping in mind both dialectology and geolinguistics, all data were gathered by means of surveys to people from each community, whose given information has been properly used to analyse the colloquial speeches of the region. The final results have been organised and presented according to several different language levels, such as: phonetics, morphology, syntax and vocabulary. In addition to the proper description of the Baix Ebre dialect as a whole, the main objectives of our research were to settle the existing parallels and linguistic relationship among the different speeches in order to determine the different dialectal areas and, mainly, specifying its dialectal classification of this regional Catalan. The main features described in the four linguistic levels mentioned above, which are mirroring the region's inner variation, have been properly mapped by means of 1209 maps. All these maps have constituted the "Atles Lingüístic del Baix Ebre" (ALBE), in which the linguistic variation in the Baix Ebre region has been recorded, taking into account its central location in the frame of the Western bloc of the Catalan language. To begin the assignment, an introductory preface, methodology and a proper geographical and historical description of the region have been presented. It also includes a section to mention the previous linguistic studies regarding the Baix Ebre region and an alphabetical list with all the words contained (lexical richness). Finally, you will find an outstanding annex with an ethnographic text from each town or village. These are proper samples of the colloquial speech of each of the twenty-three localities (municipalities and also villages) of the region.

Abstract:
An Energy Boundary Element Analysis (EBEA) formulation is presented for calculating sound radiation from a source with arbitrary shape at high frequency. The basic integral equation for the EBEA is derived including a half-space boundary condition. The time and frequency averaged acoustic energy density and acoustic intensity constitutes the primary variables of the new formulation, and the corresponding Green’s functions are derived. The governing equations for the EBEA are established and the numerical formulae for the coefficients of the system matrix, the acoustic energy density, and the acoustic intensity are derived using a Gaussian quadrature. The EBEA formulation and the corresponding numerical implementation are validated by comparing EBEA results to test data for the acoustic field around a vehicle that originates from an airborne noise source. Good correlation is demonstrated between numerical predictions and test data.

Abstract:

Controlled studies of CLPC treatments with duration ≥5 years for mortality and metastases and ≥1 year for quality of life and harms. One investigator rated risk of bias (RoB), extracted data, and assessed certainty of evidence; a second checked accuracy. We analyzed English-language studies with low or medium RoB. We incorporated findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) identified in the prior reviews if new RCTs provided information on the same intervention comparison. Results. We identified 67 eligible references; 17 were unique RCTs. Among clinically rather than prostate specific antigen (PSA) detected CLPC, Watchful Waiting (WW) may increase mortality and metastases versus Radical Prostatectomy (RP) at 20+ years. Urinary and erectile dysfunction were lower with WW versus RP. WW’s effect on mortality may vary by tumor risk and age but not by race, health status, comorbidities, or PSA. Active Monitoring (AM) probably results in little to no difference in mortality in PSA detected CLPC versus RP or external beam radiation (EBR) plus Androgen Deprivation (AD) regardless of tumor risk. Metastases were slightly higher with AM. Harms were greater with RP than AM and mixed between EBR plus AD versus AM. 3D-conformal EBR and AD plus low-dose-rate brachytherapy (BT) provided a small reduction in all-cause mortality versus three dimensional conformal EBR and AD but little to no difference on metastases. EBR plus AD versus EBR alone may result in a small reduction in mortality and metastases in higher risk disease but may increase sexual harms. EBR plus neoadjuvant AD versus EBR plus concurrent AD may result in little to no difference in mortality and genitourinary toxicity. Conventionally fractionated EBR versus ultrahypofractionated EBR may result in little to no difference in mortality and metastases and urinary and bowel toxicity. Active Surveillance may result in fewer harms than photodynamic therapy and laparoscopic RP may result in more harms than robotic-assisted RP. Little information exists on other treatments. No studies assessed provider or hospital factors of RP comparative effectiveness. Conclusions. RP reduces mortality versus WW in clinically detected CLPC but causes more harms. Effectiveness may be limited to younger men or to those with intermediate risk disease and requires many years to occur. AM results in little to no mortality difference versus RP or EBR plus AD. EBR plus AD reduces mortality versus EBR alone in higher risk CLPC but may worsen sexual function. Adding low-dose-rate BT to 3D-conformal EBR and AD may reduce mortality in higher risk CLPC. RCTs in PSA-detected and MRI staged CLPC are needed.
