Abstract:
The study aims to see whether there are differences in the nature and patterns of computer usage for communicating research between disciplines in the social sciences in Brazil and, if so, whether they can be related to factors which can affect the process of communication. The theory embedded in the research model states that pressures that accompany the introduction of information technologies into a university environment are significant factors in the use of such technologies. These pressures produce differences in the communication process itself. Furthermore, there may also be a relationship between individual factors and the use of IT for communication. The research data were collected via a survey using two instruments. Firstly, mailed questionnaires were sent to 760 academic researchers in sociology and economics in Brazil, working in post-graduate programmes. A response rate of 64.1 percent was achieved. Secondly, 36 interviews were carried out with a sample of the most productive researchers in the two subjects studied. The interview sample included both respondents and non-respondents to the questionnaire. A small sample of 11 British academic researchers was included in the interview survey, in order to allow comparisons and see whether Brazilian academics lag behind IT front-runners. Data collected revealed that there is an impact of computer usage on the scholarly communication process, especially in terms of informal communication. Such an impact can be related to changes in the social interactions that underlie knowledge creation among researchers, and also relates to differences in patterns and processes of computer usage between the chosen disciplines. Formal communication has experienced a gradually growing impact by electronic media on the well-established print environment, with the likely co-existence of the two media for some time to come. The results obtained showed that Brazilian researchers do not lag behind the British ones. Not many differences, but most similarities were found between economists and sociologists in both Brazil and the UK.

Abstract:
The crisis of the scientific communication has its origin among other things in processes of monopolizing in the journals market. With the networking of Printserver at universities and other research institutions and the introduction of standards as XML or the Open-Archives-Protocol the scientific electronic publication system has been renewed. The new formation of the Peer review is thereby a considerable factor. There has been a world-wide reaction to this crisis with the organisation of many initiatives. SPARC, OAI, PloS in the USA, Roquade, BOAI, GAP in Europe are some of the most successful. Their function is the coordination and standardisation of the electronic scholarly publishing on national and international level. University presses and Eprintservers at universities are two kinds of a practical realisation of the alternative scholarly communication.

Abstract:
This research deals with electronic publishing contemporary academic context. In particular the focus of the research is to verify the degree of credibility of Firenze University Press (FUP), academic electronic press project of the University of Florence, investigating its users’ perceptions and opinions. This survey was motivated by the need of FUP to develop a strategy focused to rationalise resources, responding to users requirements. Survey investigated mainly two categories of FUP user: professors as customers, authors (or potential authors) and students, as customers. Mixed method have adopted to draw the survey model, that combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, use both of them. Sample survey methodology have been used to obtain a picture of the general trend of faculty of the University of Florence, by selecting and measuring a sample from the whole population. Research have been directed to a sample of ‘electronically oriented’ users, those who have no prides towards Internet and email as information and communication tools and let personal email to be visible on the University website. On the basis of data and opinions gathered emerged: 1. high percent of user satisfaction; 2. promotional factors: Primary - high visibility - copyright guarantee Secondary - speediness - easiness - extended access; 3. recommendations: a) Activity of promotion and growth of visibility b) Collaboration with commercial publishers, other University Presses c) Production scheme d) Editing e) Access and selling

Abstract:
According to the Media-Analyse 2005, the Kronen Zeitung and Der Standard are the two most popular newspapers in Austria, each of them in its own sphere. The Standard is based on the model of the New York Times and intends to be a newspaper with style and quality whereas the Kronen Zeitung is known as the newspaper for the majority. The popular opinion in Austria leads to the hypothesis that the Standard uses a more elaborate language than the Kronen Zeitung. This study investigates the differences between the two daily newspapers Kronen Zeitung and Der Standard, focusing on the language used in a period from January 9th to January 22nd 2006. The aim of this analysis is to point out the differences between the linguistic usages of the two newspapers. The thesis is organised in a theoretical and an empirical part, whereby the first part consists of a literature based brief description of the two newspapers and an overview of content analysis in general. Furthermore it contains a short introduction in the topic of linguistic differences. The empirical part is an investigation to outline the differences between the newspapers, therefore a content analysis has been carried out. By means of ten categories, all articles published in the assigned period of time, are examined in terms of their linguistic features and quality. The findings of the content analysis verify the hypothesis as they indicate that the language used in the newspaper Der Standard is indeed on a higher level than the one used in the Kronen Zeitung. But the results of the assay also reveal that the differences in many determined fields are not as big as expected and that the language in the Kronen Zeitung is actually better than its reputation.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates online supplements for schoolbooks from a publisher's perspective. Online supplements can be characterised as content provided by publishers which is available via Internet and has an apparent connection to a certain printed schoolbook. They can range from mere hypertext documents and downloadable files to online training units. The aim of this thesis is to examine if the online supplements currently available exploit the full potential of Internet technologies. A further goal is to gain insight into the plans of school publishers regarding free access versus charging for access to their online materials. The approach chosen includes a survey which for practical reasons is restricted to online supplements for schoolbooks which are certified for use in mathematics classes in secondary education in Germany or Austria. The online supplements are evaluated using a set of categories designed by the author, namely embedding in the website, structuring, help function, cost, target group, area of application, source and technical basis. Additionally, interviews with representatives from four school publishing companies and one web platform for online supplements are conducted. The questions cover issues regarding their motives as well as their plans and experiences with online supplements. The findings reveal that online supplements are predominantly targeted at teachers rather than pupils and at the time fail to take advantage of the full potential of the Internet. They still rely on structure and functionality of print, while exploiting specific assets of the Internet. Access is mainly free of charge at present, but publishers are increasingly adding paid content, which is distributed over joint online platforms.

Abstract:
The thesis main goal is to suggest an innovative model for electronic web-based journals in the research field of classical studies and, in particular, of classical philology. In Italy, Humanities suffer some delay in the adoption of digital technologies with regard to publishing in scientific journals. However this delay could be avoided by taking advantage of the results obtained in the past recent years by projects started within other disciplines, in particular within physics and maths. The first chapter discusses the effects of the Web on scientific communication systems such as the journal crisis, the appearance of initiatives in collaborative writing (e.g. Wikipedia) and the Open Access Movement. In the second chapter the main specifics of the Classical Literature and Philology field have been identified in order to outline the requirements of an e-journal model which can solve existing problems with the use of electronic resources for research purposes. The third chapter is dedicated to the illustration of the implementation of the project development. In conclusion, the implemented prototype of an e-journal on classical philology highlighted how suitable the text encoding using an XML-compliant format is in order to provide scholars reading on-line publications with advanced features and value added services. Although the manual deep encoding of huge quantities of documents (journal articles, books, commentaries) is a task too expensive to perform with regard to both time and human resources necessary. Therefore it is need to develop in the next future some tools for the automatic extraction of semantic data from large corpora of unstructured discipline-specific texts.

Abstract:
Librarians often champion open access (OA) as a sustainable alternative to the current scholarly communications system, which is widely accepted as being in a state of crisis. However, there has been little insight into how far libraries are making this support tangible by providing access to OA publications in their OPACs and other library pathways. This study conducted a large-scale survey of US library holdings to determine the extent that records of journals from the Directory of Open Access Journals are held by WorldCat-affiliated Academic libraries. It then followed up with a questionnaire inquiring into the attitudes and practices of librarians from 100 libraries that were ranked highest out of the total population in terms of their holdings of DOAJ journals. The main objective of the study was to develop a better understanding of the factors influencing the incorporation of OA materials into a university library’s holdings, where and by what means they typically appear on library websites, and how librarians feel about having these materials in their collections. Our findings suggest that the majority (54%) of WorldCat-affiliated US academic libraries have at least one record for a DOAJ journal in their holdings. It additionally suggests that librarians from institutions holding high numbers of DOAJ records generally have very positive attitudes towards OA, even though most of the respondents from these institutions were largely unaware that their holdings were more heavily weighted towards DOAJ records than at comparable institutions. Regarding library selection of OA titles, a journal’s subject matter was highlighted as a more important consideration than its access model. Additional findings suggest that large publishers of OA journals tend to have a higher representation in library holdings than smaller independent publishers.

Abstract:
The invention of new technologies has been fulfilled the dreams of human life. After the advent of Information Technology (IT) the situations began changed, the printed information started to be digitized and made available to use through the help of computer devices and networks. The pace of globalization and the growth of new technologies, such as the internet, have been changing the teaching learning methods in schools, colleges, universities and research institutes. Digitization is a labor-intensive process by which physical or manual records are converted into digital form. Data digitization services offer a very good opportunity for India, due to the relatively lower costs and technical skills available. In the Greater Noida institutional area only 20% libraries have been using digital library software, 80% libraries have not till used; they are using only library automation software. All of them 60% have an under processing digital library where just 40% have an existing digital library. Their digital archrivals have been initiated by the library staffs with support of the IT staffs. A few libraries have used cooperation of resource sharing where none of them have used the support of an expert for their initiative. Almost 85% users have already benefited by the digital resources. The study found that digital resources are more useful than the printed resourced in the different stages in research and almost users need their libraries to be fully digitalized.

Abstract:
The aims of this dissertation were to analyse the media landscape concerning minorities in Burgenland and to find out how a new bilingual internet newspaper for the Hungarian speaking people of this region could be established. Firstly, the study investigates why such a newspaper is necessary and useful. This bilingual internet newspaper should further the image of the language as well as strengthen the identity of the Hungarian minority. Existing print and electronic media of the Croatian and Hungarian minority were analysed, and experiences with internet newspapers in the East-Austrian and West-Hungarian region are mentioned. Furthermore, subsidies from governmental institutes, furtherance from the European Union, Austrian and Hungarian press promotion possibilities and other private financiers are commented on. Lastly, a number of co-operation partners, such as the Burgenland education network are mentioned. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in order to collect ideas and to analyse opinions concerning the content of the internet newspaper. On one hand a survey was carried out, on the other hand a focus group discussion was organised. The majority of important sources dealing with the Hungarian minority in this linguistic island were available at the Hungarian Media- and Information Centre in Unterwart. Further research was done on Austrian and Hungarian internet newspaper sites. The main finding of the paper was the realisation that a bilingual internet newspaper for the Hungarian minority is definitely necessary. Proposals concerning the newspaper content and the layout have been made. In addition, a number of possible sources of funding and a list of potential cooperation partners are presented. In addition, the bilingual internet newspaper project is ready for kick-off.

Abstract:
The development of digital technologies has brought about great transformations on the scientific communication system. The traditional stagnation that has characterized the scholarly publishing process for centuries has now given way to a more dynamic and open system, which does not remain oblivious to the current context. The transformations undergone throughout this process go beyond the digital edition. Such changes, mediated to a greater or lesser extent by the spirit of the Web 2.0 or Social Web, encompass both novel publishing models as well as original methods of peer review and new scientific impact indicators. This study provides a descriptive analysis regarding the recent evolution of the scientific communication system, focusing on the aforementioned aspects. At the same time, a statistical analysis showing the degree of adoption of social technologies by scientific journals and the prevailing tools at article level has also been carried out. The results suggest the existence of differences regarding the publisher typology, while the scientific area and the quartiles are not –a priori and in the absence of a deeper study– decisive elements.

Abstract:
Dynamization processes and channels of scientific communication is materialized in emergence on mechanisms to systems evaluation and qualification based on results of research and their producers of scientific information. In this study, the magnitude of compliance with certain quality standards in Peruvian scientific journals is determined, and a distinction is made with indicators for measuring scientific impact and web visibility according to the type of university and presence of journal in evaluation plattforms and indexes. Approach of bibliometric and cybermetric analysis is used, using scientific journals as units of analysis selected by their country of publication: Peru, and registered in the most known regional systems of evaluation and classification of journals. Among the results found, it is worth mentioning that the majority of Peruvian journals (53%) meet 29 criteria or less of editorial quality; as for H-index, highest proportion corresponds to journals with an H-index equal to or less than 3 (59%); also, in terms of web visibility, the results are much lower than expected: only three out of five articles are found in the academic web.

Abstract:
This research attempts to define convergent tendencies between the knowledge constituting the publishing activity and the conceptual frame upon which Information Science is based. Taking shape as an exploratory study, the research tries to systematize and make coherent a definite mark from which the convergence between the two areas may be contemplated and analyzed. In the process of constructing its arguments, the research seeks to identify, amongst international literature, authors and theoretical proposals which lead to building the structure of said convergence, determining its statute and indicating the nature of its contribution for the Information Science epistemology. Aiming to extend the universe of its inferences, a selected segment of the literature published in Brazilian journals of Information Science within the latest ten years is taken into account, in order to verify the presence of bibliographic sources that disclose the repercussion of the idea of convergence between publishing activity and Information Science – such as profiled in this study – in the papers discussing the discipline’s epistemological foundations. The research also points out topics that after analyzed more deeply would enlarge the knowledge about this subject, suggesting further studies which may demonstrate and consolidate the links between the fields under investigation.

This thesis deals with metadata standards for e-learning and its aim is to compare two Rels (rights expression languages) for learning objects, Mpeg21 Rel and Onix for licensing Terms, as an initial step towards a desirable creation of an interoperable language for the expression of digital objects usage rights. As the entire work is addressed to a wide range of audience, the first part of the thesis deals with some elementary concepts as the one of "learning object" and how to create it. Subsequently, it describes LOM (Learning Object Metadata), the standardised and widely used language for the expression of metadata, and underlines the necessity of an integrated language for expressing the multiple scenarios of rights exchange, as LOM doesn't provide enough records for embracing this complexity. The core part of the thesis is the languages comparison, made through the creation of two licenses expressing the same scenarios with the different syntaxes of the two Rels. Then, there are some final considerations, aiming to be some of the key points to know whether elaborating a new interoperable Rel.

Full text
Abstract:
The online self-archiving by authors of their scholarly articles has been proposed as an alternative to author-pays open access publication, but has the potential to undermine journal publisher income if the ready availability of self-archived articles leads to a drop in subscriptions. This study investigated the awareness of self-archiving and use of self-archived articles in a survey of a mainly academic population including both authors and non-authors, and looks at their attitudes to self-archived papers and whether they view them as an authoritative alternative to subscription access. In total, 70% of respondents had heard of self-archiving, though only 15% knew a lot about it, and 71% had used self-archived papers. These proportions are higher than in previous studies, suggesting that awareness has grown. Most self-archived papers used came from websites rather than repositories, particularly among those whose awareness of self-archiving was low. Use of self-archived articles was greater amongst those who had published more papers and also depended strongly on subject field – use and awareness were both particularly low in the field of medicine. People who were more aware of self-archiving were less likely to view the publisher’s official version as the only authoritative version and more likely not to care about the online location of articles. Moreover, authors who had self-archived tended to archive the publisher’s official version regardless of whether they were permitted to. These results suggest that the awareness of self-archiving is currently mostly limited to academic authors and is unlikely to grow beyond this in the short term. However, in the long term, the combination of high rates of self-archiving of the publisher’s official version, coupled with the devaluation of the journal as the authoritative source of material together with increased convenience of access to self-archived material, could result in fewer people accessing articles through subscription-based methods.

The aim of this research was to assess the scientific impact of open access journals (OAJs). For this purpose, the descriptive method was used and research data were collected on Directory of Open Access Journal (DOAJ), Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and websites of open access journals, and statistically analyzed. According to data between JCR 2000 and 2015, the number of OAJs increased from 249 (4%) to 1,320 (12%) in 16 years. In this period, while the share of OAJs published by commercial publishers and universities increased from 23% to 42% and 20% to 22%, and civil society organizations (CSOs) and other types of publishers decreased from 36% to 26% and from 20% to 10%, respectively. Commercial publishers, CSOs, universities and other publishers charged article processing fees for OAJs by 79%, 46%, 31% and 17%, respectively. There was a significant relationship between open access publisher types and whether or not to charge article processing fees. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the article processing fee and the metrics, albeit varied by disciplines and metrics, and the metrics of OAJs that charged article processing fees were higher than those who did not. The metrics of OAJs increased significantly after 5, 10 and 15 years. Metrics of toll access journals were higher than OAJs, again, albeit varied by disciplines and metrics. It may be useful to increase the number of OAJs and to prioritize the value of individual researches rather than journal-level metrics in research assessment systems.

Abstract:
Electronic journals are the most efficient scholar communication tools for academicians searching, keeping up with current affairs and publication of their works. Scientific journals are published in the 17th century for the first time. It is seen that the publishing of electronic journals is formed with technological developments in the 1990’s. Projects of many universities and professional groups begin to attribute publising of electronic journals. With the effect of open access electronic publishing begins to gain a different dimension These developments cause many researches on electronic journals. However, studies upon the features of electronic journals and usage causes affecting them are few. It is seen that especially with the development of the electronic journal publishing, studies on users in this subject began to increase. But still, there is not a study which aims to use the sources of different academicians from different disciplines. So our research aims to show the place of electronic journals in communication, the development of these sources up untill today and the effects of differences among disciplines on use of electronic journals. Furthermore, the findings which we obtain are compared with similar studies in literature. In this respect, the hypothesis of our research is as follows: “The academicians use of e-journals varies depending on -the discipline they are associated with, -the knowledge and experiments of the users and -the local factors.” In our research, literature survey, survey and interview techniques have been used. While the capacity of universe is 1428 academicians, sampling is made up of 249 persons. Sampling is divided into four disciplines which are science , engineering, social science and humanities. As a result of our study, it is seen that there are similarities and differences in the features of Ankara University academicians usage of electronic journals. It is found that engineers and sciencists use e-journals more excessively when compared to other disciplines. The human scientists are observed to be the group of academicians who use e-journals least. User preference in scientific journals, their attitutes towards the weak and strong sides of journals, their knowledge about open access, the states of benefiting from open access sources and the things which they pay attention while publishing an article change according to the discipline which they are associated with.

The impact of e-book in Spanish libraries has been studied from different perspectives where the issue is dealt with fragmented visions. So, university libraries researches are relatively common because they are the most advanced in terms of technology. This work aims to make a comprehensive study on the e-book and its arrival in the Spanish libraries until 2012, especially considering aspects related to acquisition and use of reading devices and electronic content. At the same time the following specific objectives are outlined: provide a theoretical frame of the eBook and approximate the birth of the concept "eBook"; analyze the technical evolution of digital content reading devices; and provide a study of the legal framework of the book. As result, a theoretical discussion of the concept of e-book and its possible future developments is provided and reading devices marketed until 2012 (primarily e-ink) are analyzed. Also there is a section devoted to the study of the publishing market that focuses on marketing models of electronic content and provides a comparison between the evolution of the legal protection of the book and challenges that intellectual property has faced during the period of study. In the last part of this work, a categorization of libraries and an analysis of usage patterns of electronic books are performed. These analysis serve as a preliminary stage to design a survey that has allow to extract usage statistics of electronic content and reading devices in Spanish libraries. Finally, the conclusions from the research, bibliographic references and some indices of figures, graphs and tables, and annexes complementing the thesis are given.

Abstract:
The terms disinformation and fake news are relatively contemporary. BRAPCI is a base with productions focused on Information Science. Excerpts from academic productions, comprised in the period of records in the database from 2000 to 2019, show that the authors have been addressing at least one of the terms. Therefore, there would already be something consolidated: definition, mediation, contingency, etc. On the other hand, these relationships can influence the career of the future Information Manager graduated from UFPE. However, the aim is to: identify the documents (productions) in the database, through a direct search expression using the terms: (disinformation) and (fake news); identify the productions in BRAPCI; find definitions of terms; check the frequency of use of terms; and, present them with quotations, tables, charts and graphs. Therefore, the methodology consisted of exploratory bibliographical research supported by bibliometric inferences. Therefore, promote academic and professional debate on the eventual use of such terms. Some conclusions were reached: 1. the term fake news was recovered from the year 2017; 2. the terms take extraordinary forms and dimensions, conditioned to the actions: production, communication and social flow of information. ‘Use’ is the only less technological part, as it largely stems from human cognition. Finally, it is understood that the Information Manager must interact with the appropriate Information Competence.

Abstract:
The thesis represents research of theoretical and methodological basis for providing satisfactory infometrics analysis of the flow of Ukrainian web-based library and information science research articles. The origins and historical survey of the infometric technique is presented and the up-to-date infometric classification research methodologies is developed. As the result of the research, the necessity of multiple infometric diagnostic methods implementaton for better understanding of the scientific web communication status and efficiency in Ukrainian library science is developed. The extent of open access web publications being used by library scientists is determined by webometrics monitoring and the structure and dynamics of libraran scientists` web publications is analysed. A conceptual model of infometric online diagnostics was developed to identify perspective directions of the online publications flow. Semantically this model is divided into multi-disciplinary, specialized and individual directions. The importance of the theoretical and methodological foundations for enhancing the infometric diagnostics as the base for improving communication, representation of the Ukrainian library science professionals` scientific accomplishments in the global web, as well as the base for intensifying scientometric statistics and forming profound and high-quality web source in the field of library science and related disciplines, is pointed out. Open access consolidated web source for library scientists with effective webometric tools for monitoring scholar activity of individual library professionals, academic institutions and others` research activities is used to ground new conceptual model of Ukrainian library scientists' online publications infometric diagnostics. A number of management decisions and policies, as well as technical and technological factors that can intensify the level of open access movement by Ukrainian library scientists are pointed out.

Abstract:
The study examines preconditions to adopt semantic web technologies for a novel specialized medium of scholarly communication that – also interdisciplinary – enables the synchronicity of publication and knowledge representation on the one hand and the dynamic bundling of assertions on the other hand. Therefore it is first of all necessary to determine a concept of „(scholarly) publication“ and of neighbouring concepts. These considerations are fertilized by theories that can be related to the radical constructivism. Therefrom derives a critique of the mainstream of knowledge representation that resigns to being not able to represent the dynamics of knowledge. Finally the study evinces a conceptual outline of a technical system that is built upon the known concept of nanopublications and is called „scholarly network“. The increased effort while publishing in the scholarly network is outweighed by the benefits of this publication medium: It may help to render research outputs more precisely as well as to raise their connectivity through reducing the complexity of assertions. Beyond that it would generate an openly accessible and finely structured discourse archive – a wide participation provided.
