Abstract:
This chapter discusses research findings regarding body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and eating disorders, and it provides guidelines for distinguishing between them. BDD and eating disorders show many similarities, including negative and distorted body image, decreased quality of life, compensatory behaviors such as dieting, and abnormalities in visual processing. Patients with BDD express specific concerns with different parts of their bodies and physical appearance; common examples are complexion, nose, breasts/genitals, and hair. In patients who have prominent concerns about weight and body fat and shape, however, the diagnosis of BDD can be complicated because such concerns can occur as a symptom of BDD but also overlap with those in eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. BDD and eating disorders are often comorbid, which is accompanied by notably higher rates of suicidality and psychiatric hospitalization than occur in patients with either disorder alone. BDD and eating disorders represent distinct pathologies, and it is important to distinguish between them, particularly given the increased risk of suicidality when the disorders are comorbid.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the impact of rapid urbanization and industrialization on food and eating out. It draws attention to the growing standardization of food and, with greater class differentiation, to the growing diversity in eating-out venues. Class, gender, and nation are again used as lenses to understand the different eating-out habits and their symbolic significance. Towards the end of the twentieth century, pubs moved more fully towards embracing dining. However, the quality of food, in general terms, began to improve significantly only towards the end of the century, and hospitality venues also moved towards selling food from diverse national origins.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the food eaten at this time in taverns, inns, and public houses. It focuses on how allegiance to either English or French cuisine expresses patriotism and cosmopolitanism respectively. Patriotism and the consumption of large amounts of beef receive particular emphasis. An examination of food consumed nevertheless finds a considerable variety in the types of food enjoyed, as well as noting the quality, particularly of country house cooking. Divergent national identifications, in turn, are related to the class background of diners, as well as to gender identity. Changes in modes of dining out are viewed in their social, economic, and political contexts.

Abstract:
Psychological disturbances occur throughout Type1 diabetes, from diagnosis to the experience of late tissue complications. Serious life events may precipitate diabetes onset. All parents of newly diagnosed children report stress. Poor glycaemic control is associated with suboptimal school performance, but children do not consider their own quality of life to be poor. Depression during adolescence is no more common than in the background population. Single parenthood and minority ethnicity are associated with worse glycaemic outcomes. Poor glycaemia associated with poor family functioning can be helped by family-based interventions. Eating disorders are not more frequent in diabetes, but disordered eating and insulin omission are prevalent, the last associated with increased mortality. Depression is common, often severe, undiagnosed, and associated with maternal depression. Non-pharmacological treatment is more effective than antidepressants. Diabetic complications increase the risk of depression 2- to 3-fold, and all depressive disorders may increase mortality in people with foot ulceration.

Abstract:
Cardiac patients should be advised about and have the opportunity to access a comprehensive cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation programme, addressing all aspects of lifestyle—smoking cessation, healthy eating, and being physically active—together with more effective management of blood pressure, lipids, and glucose. To achieve the clinical benefits of a multidisciplinary and multifactorial prevention programme we need to integrate professional lifestyle interventions with effective risk factor management and evidence-based drug therapies, appropriately adapted to the medical, cultural, and economic setting of a country. The challenge is to engage and motivate cardiologists, physicians, and health professionals to routinely practise high-quality preventive cardiology and promote a healthcare system which invests in prevention.

Patterson, DJ, and MA Burford. Guide to Protozoa of Marine Aquaculture Ponds. CSIRO Publishing, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643101081.

Full text
Abstract:
As well as being a culture environment for fish and crustaceans, an aquaculture pond is a rich and complex ecosystem that is dominated by the microbial community. The community is nourished by food and sunlight, and is made up of algae, bacteria and, importantly, protozoa. Protozoa live by eating other organisms and detritus, or by absorbing soluble organic matter dissolved in the water. Ultimately they affect water quality in aquaculture ponds, including the stability of algal and bacterial communities, and nutrient concentrations. In addition, some protozoa can have adverse effects on the health of cultured species. Guide to Protozoa of Marine Aquaculture Ponds is designed to provide a simple means of identifying the main groups of protozoa found in aquaculture ponds through the use of photographs and drawings. This is supplemented with information on the likely effects of protozoa on water quality and the health of the cultured species. This guide is an indispensable tool for those involved in rearing marine animals, as well as aquaculture researchers and teachers. Please note that this book is spiral-bound.

Full text
Abstract:
Bulbar dysfunction typically manifests as speech and swallowing impairment in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Timely assessment of changes in speech and swallowing is imperative, given its negative prognostic implication and impact on psychological well-being. The progressive loss of the ability to speak and swallow can also result in threats to the self-concept, which may compound issues with social interaction. The use of communication devices to accommodate loss of speech appears to be beneficial in reducing patient distress and caregiver burden. Implementation of interventions to manage problems eating secondary to swallowing impairment can also result in marked improvements in patients’ and caregivers’ quality of life. However, the success of these interventions depends on intact cognitive and behavioural functioning, which may be compromised in patients with bulbar dysfunction. Assessment of bulbar dysfunction should therefore be considered in the context of cognitive and behavioural change, to maximize patient and caregiver psychological well-being.

Barnes, Jessica. Staple Security. Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478023111.

Full text
Abstract:
Egyptians often say that bread is life; most eat this staple multiple times a day, many relying on the cheap bread subsidized by the government. In Staple Security, Jessica Barnes explores the process of sourcing domestic and foreign wheat for the production of bread and its consumption across urban and rural settings. She traces the anxiety that pervades Egyptian society surrounding the possibility that the nation could run out of wheat or that people might not have enough good bread to eat, and the daily efforts to ensure that this does not happen. With rich ethnographic detail, she takes us into the worlds of cultivating wheat, trading grain, and baking, buying, and eating bread. Linking global flows of grain and a national bread subsidy program with everyday household practices, Barnes theorizes the nexus between food and security, drawing attention to staples and the lengths to which people go to secure their consistent availability and quality.

Lesnik, Julie J. Edible Insects and Human Evolution. University Press of Florida, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5744/florida/9780813056999.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In Edible Insects and Human Evolution, Julie Lesnik investigates insects in the human diet from an evolutionary perspective. In May of 2013, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization proposed that insects as food should be strongly considered as a means of addressing the increased food demands of our growing global population. One area of investigation proposed by the FAO included more thoroughly understanding the nutritional value of insects in order to promote them as a healthy food choice. This book not only reviews the available evidence of insect nutritional values, but also explores the roles different nutrients play in human reproduction and development. Over the course of our evolution, our nutritional demands greatly increased, in part due to the evolution of our large brains. Insects are a high-quality food resource that was likely exploited by our ancestors in order to increase dietary quality during these critical times. Utilizing examples from hunter-gatherer populations as well as nonhuman primates, this book reconstructs the role of insects in the hominin diet over the course of human evolution. This low-risk food source would have offered nutrients that were otherwise difficult to obtain, making it especially appealing to females supporting young offspring. Historically, the literature surrounding the diet of our ancestors focused on hunting and meat eating, which has permeated into the current diet fad known as the paleo diet. This book argues that insects were just as important as meat in the past and that today they offer a sustainable alternative to meat.

Kailis, Stan, and David Harris. Producing Table Olives. CSIRO Publishing, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643094383.

Full text
Abstract:
Australia has the ideal conditions for growing and processing table olives. In a climate where the majority of table olives eaten by Australians are imported, real opportunities exist for a domestic table olive industry. Attention to quality and safety will ensure that Australian table olive producers are in a position to tackle and make inroads into the international export market. The aim of this manual is to provide olive growers and processors with internationally based guidelines for ensuring the quality and safety of processed table olives. This manual covers all aspects essential for the production of safe, nutritious and marketable table olives including site selection, recommended varieties, pest and disease control, primary and secondary processing, and quality and safety testing.

Phillips, Katharine A., ed. Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190254131.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a devastating yet underrecognized illness. People with BDD are preoccupied with the belief that they look abnormal or ugly—when they actually do not. Their appearance preoccupations cause clinically significant distress or impairment in occupational, academic, social, or other areas of functioning. Psychosocial functioning and quality of life are typically markedly impaired, and rates of suicidality are very high. BDD is common, yet this disorder often goes undiagnosed and untreated. This book provides an up-to-date, comprehensive, and clinically focused overview of this intriguing, complex, and often severe disorder. The book contains nine sections: (1) patients, history, and classification; (2) phenomenology and epidemiology; (3) morbidity; (4) BDD in special populations; (5) assessment; (6) etiology and pathophysiology; (7) recommended treatments; (8) cosmetic treatment; and (9) BDD’s relationship to other disorders. Measures for assessing BDD are provided in the Appendix. Written by leading researchers and clinicians in the field, this book is for anyone who wants to better understand BDD, help patients overcome it, or conduct scientific research to advance knowledge. It is for mental health clinicians, primary care clinicians, and pediatricians, as well as surgeons, dermatologists, and others who provide cosmetic (aesthetic) treatment; cosmetic treatment is commonly received but virtually never alleviates BDD symptoms. This book is also for researchers and students who are interested in anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. Although it is geared toward a professional audience, this book is also for anyone who is interested in or has been affected by BDD.
