Park, Jinsoo. "Sino-Japanese competitive leadership and East Asian regionalism : the Chiang Mai Initiative and East Asian organisations." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2011. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/35534/.

Full text
Abstract:
East Asia and East Asian regionalism have gained greater attention. Given this, what makes this region and who determines its shape are very important questions, which are, in turn, highly relevant to questions of regional leadership. This thesis thus aims to examine and explain the nature of Sino-Japanese regional leadership and explore its impacts on the shape of the East Asia region and East Asian regionalism. It does so particularly with reference to the CMI and regional organisation-building from the APT to the EAS. The thesis explores two key themes. First, it seeks to bridge a gap in the study of East Asian regionalism in particular and East Asia in general by focusing on the dynamics of Sino-Japanese leadership competition. There is still a lack of a dedicated study to examine the dynamics of regional leadership in the region and its impact on the East Asia region and East Asian regionalism. It addresses why regional powers assert regional leadership and how their assertions of regional leadership change their interests and behaviours with regard to regional cooperation. By doing so, it can help better comprehend the interests and strategies of China and Japan and their impacts on the shape of East Asian regionalism. Secondly, this thesis aims to fill in a gap in the study of global or regional leadership by developing a constructivist analytical tool to define leadership and examine the dynamics of leadership. It highlights that neither the realist and liberal approaches to international leadership nor the emerging literature on regional powers provides a good analytical tool to conceptualise regional leadership and to examine the dynamics of regional leadership competition. It argues that some insights of constructivism help to better comprehend the dynamics of regional leadership.

Abstract:
East Asia has been one of the most important regions in the global economic system. In this thesis, the East Asian miracle and the success of China&rsquo
s transition are studied by overviewing the literature. The East Asian economies had experienced sustainable rapid growth from the 1960s to the end of 1990s, until the Asian crisis in 1997. China started her transition from the central planning system at the end of the 1970s. Since the transition began, China has grown at rates even higher than developed countries and she is one of the countries which survived the Asian crisis nearly without damage. Comparing these two experiences in East Asia would give an idea on the features of development in this region. The conclusion is that China shares the features of developmental state which is attributed to the miraculous East Asian economies.

Lefevre, Randy J. "Synoptic forcing of East Asian cold surges." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/26287.

Full text
Abstract:
A linearized, global spectral model with eight levels was used to determine whether the nonlinear interaction between a planetary-scale wave (wavenumber four) and a rapidly growing synoptic-scale wave (wavenumber seven) could produce a northeasterly wind, characteristic of East Asian cold surges. The amplitude of the synoptic-scale wave, or generic cyclone, was produced by a nonlinear Eady model of the atmosphere that included friction. The resulting nonlinear forcing was applied to either the first law of thermodynamics, the vorticity equation, or both. The thermal forcing did not produce a significant cold surge response. The vorticity forcing produced a respectable cold surge within 48 hours. The results of this study indicate the planetary-synoptic wave interaction is a possible method for initiating East Asian cold surges. Keyword: Theses

York, Thomas John. "The reliability of early East Asian astronomical records." Thesis, Durham University, 2003. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3080/.

Full text
Abstract:
The large body of observations extant from pre-telescopic East Asia - China, Japan and Korea - provide the opportunity to investigate the behaviour of the Sun and solar system over a much longer period of time than that since telescopic observations began in Europe. Much past work in this field has tended to concentrate on individual records of particularly significant observations. In this study the variations in the frequency of the observation of meteors, comets, eclipses, planetary conjunctions and occupations, sunspots, and aurorae during the pre-telescopic period are examined in contemporary records from these three countries. It is to be expected that data artefacts (frequency variations not of astronomical origin) are present to some degree in early sources. The records are translated and collated where necessary, and by comparing patterns across the three countries and across different types of event several major data artefacts are identified and classified. The problem of such artefacts has not previously been the subject of analysis. The results of this study are therefore of significance in considering the reliability of these sets of data for the examination of long term variations in the solar system.

Leung, Parie Pui Yee. "Yellow Earth and Future Generation : correlations in British East Asian and Asian Canadian drama." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/55084.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1995 and 2002, London’s Yellow Earth Theatre (YET) and Toronto’s fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company have been producing work under the identity labels of “British East Asian theatre” and “Asian Canadian theatre” respectively. Emerging out of different socio-cultural contexts, the companies have nonetheless produced plays that address similar themes around mixed-race identities, immigration, and the experiences of first- and second-generation East Asians living in Britain and Canada. Despite burgeoning research on Asian Canadian theatre and British Chinese culture—developments that echo the pioneering directions of Asian American theatre scholarship—studies have tended to focus exclusively on cultural work produced by East Asian artists within the national boundaries of America, Canada and Australia. Inspired by two emotionally charged events that I attended in Toronto and in London that drew attention to the parallels between ethno-national theatre produced in different western cultures, this thesis investigates the background, mandates, and key works of two leading theatre companies in order to compare their dramatic strategies. Using data from published and unpublished scripts, published reviews and interviews, archival video where available, and the companies’ press and public material through their websites, this thesis argues that comparing theatre companies across ethno-national contexts can reveal insights about how familiar dramatic strategies such as the absurd, fantastical, spectral, and audience interaction, have additional import in identity-centred work.

Ding, Qinghua. "Physical Linkage Between Indian and East Asian Summer Monsoons." Thesis, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/6944.

Full text
Abstract:
Observational evidence is presented to show the existence of a boreal summer teleconnection between the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). Based on station rainfall data, the dominant patterns of variability in monthly and seasonal rainfall over India-East Asia region are investigated mainly through composite analysis. The association between the midlatitude circulation and Indian monsoon rainfall on interannual time scale has also been examined by using 54-year NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. The major results are as follows: (1) Associated with the year-to-year fluctuation of Indian summer rainfall, a well-organized upper level teleconnection pattern is obvious over the Eurasia continent with two anomalous anticyclonic (cyclonic) circulations in the strong (weak) monsoon year. One center is located over West Tibet, and the other with an equivalent barotropic structure resides in northeast Asia. This teleconnection establishes a linkage between two monsoon systems. (2) Within the summer season from May to September, above mentioned midlatitude teleconnection pattern undergoes a different structure with the strongest intensity in June and August. Hence, depending on the condition of Indian monsoon, the 'window of linkage' between Indian subcontinent rainfall and East Asian monsoon seems to open only in June or August. (3) On the other hand, a global anomalous wavetrain with favored longitudinal phase has been found in the upper and middle troposphere in each summer month. During June and August, this geographically fixed wavetrain characteristic of a circumglobal feature coincides with the ISM-EASM teleconnection. Based on all these observational results, three possible scenarios are proposed to explain the establishment of the teleconnection. And it seems that the upper level climatological westerly jet, Indian monsoon heating and midlatitude stationary wave activity are important factors that control the establishment of the teleconnection. On intraseasonal time scale, simultaneous and lagged correlation statistics have been calculated between height in northern hemisphere and convection over north India. It is found that prior to the breakout of the convection in north India two anomalous ridges have existed over north of Pakistan and northeast Asia, respectively. A plausible mechanism of this interaction between the westerly flow in the midlatitude and Indian monsoon is also briefly discussed.

Cao, Qing. "East Asian backpacker tourists' motivations for participating in backpacking." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1523181.

Full text
Abstract:

This study examined the motivational factors that lead East Asian backpacker tourists to choose backpacking, and whether the destination choices of East Asian backpackers vary by nationality.

A sample of 100 East Asian backpacker tourists who travelled to Yunnan, China was surveyed. Both male and female was surveyed from a variety of age, vocation and nationalities.

The results may shed light on the reasons why East Asian backpacker tourists want to participating in backpacking. Information of the study showed that East Asian backpacker tourists found many motivational factors to be important when seeking backpacking and these factors varied based on demographic characteristics.

Understanding the importance of relative motivational factors studied may help tourism service providers better understand East Asian backpacker tourists' motivations so to customize the various types of services for different backpacker tourists. The associated tourism services, such as transportation, food service, accommodations, and recreational activities, may also benefit from the research findings.

Reid, Margaret. "The changing face of Guanyin in East Asian religions." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Religious Studies, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8363.

Full text
Abstract:
Guanyin occupies a prominent place in East Asian Religions, being honoured in both Buddhist and Taoist temples. This figure, often referred to as the Goddess of Mercy, is frequently depicted as a young barefoot maiden with long dark hair and flowing white robes. Surprisingly, however, this maiden started her career as a masculine bodhisattva. In addition many multi-armed and multi-headed forms of Guanyin can be found in different temples and a profusion of different attributes have appeared over time. This thesis looks at the degree to which other religious figures and cultural values have contributed to the development of the iconography of Guanyin. In studying and comparing the various iconographic forms in the diverse parts of East Asia we can see how local beliefs and other religious figures have shaped Guanyin's imagery. We can also see that it is the malleability of this cult figure that makes this possible. It is for this reason that the cult of Guanyin has been so successful. Part of the investigation into the influences that shaped Guanyin's imagery will involve a discussion of the 'sex change'. This has been the subject of much debate. Several figures can be said to have influenced this feminine form, these include Hārītī, Shengmu and Tārā. What is remarkable about the cult of Guanyin and explains its success, is that because imagery changes according to the needs of devotees, so gender also changes. This malleable quality of Guanyin is not restricted to gender but extends to other features and functions of Guanyin. These are determined by the beliefs of the various communities to which the cult has spread and evidenced by the interplay with the cults of other deities such as that of the Taoist goddess Mazu. In this particular case we can see first hand an example of the assimilation process at work. This thesis is the result of much 'on site' research, all photographs being my own except where cited otherwise. I use the 'Pinyin' system of transliteration except where the Wade-Giles form is more commonly known, which I show in square brackets.

Abstract:
A parsimony analysis of ndhF nucleotide sequences representing 24 species and 13 genera of Sterculioideae strongly support its monophyly. Within Sterculioideae four major clades are recognised but relationships among them are not resolved. This analysis suggests the recognition of Argyrodendron as separate from Heritiera, Acropogon as separate from Sterculia, and Tarrietia as part of Heritiera. Current circumscriptions of Hildegardia and Firmiana are not supported. The use of floral characters in delimitation of genera may be more appropriate than the traditional use of fruit characters. 20 new ITS, 17 new trnL-trnF, 15 new trnH-psbA, and 13 new trnS-trnG sequences were obtained for species of Scaphium, Pterocymbium and outgroups from Sterculioideae. Phylogenetic reconstructions using parsimony and Bayesian inference were undertaken for each region, chloroplast regions combined, and ITS and chloroplast regions combined. For each region parsimony and Bayesian analyses generally produced congruent topologies, but results from nuclear and chloroplast data differed, albeit with weak support. The chloroplast data indicated Scaphium to be monophyletic whereas the ITS tree placed Pterocymbium within Scaphium, rendering it paraphyletic. Within Scaphium some support is given to a Sc. Longipetiolatum – Sc. Scaphigerum clade, resolved as sister group to other Scaphium species, for the recognition of Sc. Macropodum and Sc. Affine as separate species, the recognition of Sc. Longiflorum as separate from Sc. Affine, and to Sc. Linearicarpum as sister to a clade composed of Sc. Macropodum, Sc affine and Sc. Longiflorum. A revision of Scaphium recognizes eight species, of which one is newly described. Six species names are placed in synonymy or are excluded from Scaphium. An account of Sterculiaceae s.1. for the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak covers 11 genera, 47 species and five varieties.

Wu, Xiangning. "China's ICT industry and East Asian regional production networks." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1150/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis discusses the impact of China’s putative rise in East Asian regional production networks (EARPN) with regard to the ICT industry. Many research studies have focused on China’s strengthening military and political power or are devoted to China’s astounding economic achievements vis-à-vis Japan’s recession in the world economy. The tone of much of this literature since the 1990s has been to highlight the ‘danger of the rising China’. However, there is a gap in the scholarly literature regarding the impact of a rising China on EARPNs with regard to the ICT industry. Changes in this industry mark the latest industrial revolution, and the industry itself is characterized by rapid changes and powerful influences in every aspect of the economy. This thesis will analyse the impact China brings to EARPNs because of its rapidly developing ICT industry. To be more specific, it will show to what extent changes in China’s ICT industry (re-)shape existing regional production networks (RPNs) in East Asia, which for a long time saw Japan as the key actor. Moreover, this thesis will also demonstrate whether a revised flying geese paradigm can be applied to EARPNs in terms of the ICT sector. This thesis applies a revised flying geese model to evaluate the impact of the Chinese government’s regional intentions and the Chinese ICT enterprises’ behaviour overseas in EARPNs. Based on a number of cases, this work shows that the rise of China with regard to its ICT industry is establishing China’s position as a regional leader in EARPNs. China’s significant roles both in the region and in the world are even more prominent, which has contributed to directly shaking the role of Japan as the leading goose of the EARPNs. This thesis argues that the essence of the process of catching-up and the characteristics of a dynamic hierarchical division of labour in the EARPNs have not changed simply because of the developments in China with regard to the ICT industry. However, contrary to expectation, this thesis shows that it is too early to conclude that the dynamic hierarchical division of labour has changed, and to see China replace the previous leading goose, either in terms of large amounts of FDI or in terms of capabilities of continuously providing advanced technology. The very complicated international and regional relations that China is pursuing also influence China’s ability to reshape EARPNs. In short, China has not yet become the leader of EARPNs.

Fowler, Randolph West. "Strategic planning and adaptation in the East Asian context." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/11917/.

Full text
Abstract:
The existing literature on strategic adaptation rests on a model with cultural assumptions about the nature of adaptive behavior, emphasizing low power distance values and antecedents, and the notion that adaptation is intrinsically a bottom-up process. In light of Asian organizations’ presumed top-down management style, it must be asked whether these firms are predisposed to be non-adaptive, or if there is some other means, not represented by the current model, by which they adapt. This is necessary to achieve a more theoretically complete view of adaptation, without assuming the current model is intrinsically generalizable across the globe. A mixed methods approach was used for answering the research question of how (and if) Asian organizations plan for the future while adapting to the present. Qualitative research was conducted on 14 organizations, spanning 6 East Asian regions. The presumed “long-term orientation” of Asian firms was called into question during this process, and additional individual-level data was collected specifically on this subject. This research makes several major contributions. First, an alternate “top-down” model of adaptation was uncovered, involving low autonomy of lower- and middle-level managers, but fluid communication from bottom to top, enabling informed but authoritarian adaptive decision-making exclusively at the behest of top management. Second, the existing literature on long-term orientation is probed for weaknesses in methodology and conceptual clarity, and for claims of applicability to the business sphere; improved methodology is designed, increasing conceptual specificity, and testing the time orientation of actual business behavior. Third, the qualitative study reveals 8 salient facts about time orientation in East Asian businesses, providing a more in-depth understanding, the sum of which does not suggest a long-term timeframe. Fourth, the individual-level study shows a startling and precise consistency across cultures in economic trade-offs between present and future, suggesting such decisions are unaffected by cultural considerations.

This paper attempts to deliver a side-by-side examination of the similarities and differences between the economies of East Asia (Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea Republic, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines) and China. After the devastating 1997 Crisis, many investing eyes have turned to China as the next Asian growth engine. China has been opening its economy to foreign investors and its accession into the World Trade Organization will push for increased transparency and efficiency. The paper discusses the internal and external forces that drove the economies, with focused attention on its financial systems, using pre-crisis data. With foreign banks allowed entry into China by the end of 2006, its financial system will be an important component in economic longevity. Lastly, the question of whether or not China is vulnerable to a crisis is assessed based on the same factors that caused it in East Asia

This thesis examines the East Asian geometric silk pattern. Despite its long history of use in traditional architecture as an ornamental element in Korea and China, a little attempt was made to understand its geometric construction. Also, the connection between the silk patterns in two countries are often neglected because of the lack of systematic archiving. I first present the currently existing examples of silk patterns in Korea and China. Through a comparative analysis, I identify that the pattern is a shared heritage of the region and proses that more holistic approach is required to understand its relation with geometric patterns from other cultures. One of the approach is symmetry analysis, a method used in archeology to identify relevance in material culture between two adjacent cultural groups. Subsequently, I present shape analysis of existing sixfold symmetry silk patterns and argue that the stacking order of basic motifs plays an important role in design of the majority of silk patterns. I devised a symbolic notation system to identify different stacking order between different designs. Based on the analysis, I introduce an automated pattern generator which creates patterns with a specific symmetry in batches. The produced images can be used to train a symmetry classifier based on a machine learning model. I discuss possible implementations of the pattern generator and the symmetry classifier model and outline future development and challenges.

This dissertation specifies and tests rationalist mechanisms of war. Why would rational states fight each other despite their incentives for peaceful bargains that would avoid the costs of war? In the rationalist theory of war, private information and the commitment problem are the key causes of war. I study the effects of these factors - and the mechanisms regulating their effects - through randomized experiments, historical analysis of the decision processes in three wars, and a comparative study of all international wars fought in East Asia in the last century. This is the first integrated study of rationalist causes of war that combines randomized experiments with historical cases. Despite a wide theoretical literature, there are few empirical tests of rationalist explanations for war. I use experimental and historical evidence to show that the commitment problem has strong positive effects on conflict. The effects of private information are less clear. Next, I specify six mechanisms that regulate the effects of the commitment problem and the private-information problem: three mechanisms (exogenous, endogenous, and inadvertent enforcement) for the first problem and three mechanisms (signaling with sunk cost, implementation cost, and salient contradiction) for the second. The experimental and historical evidence largely converge. Each of the three enforcement mechanisms calms the commitment problem and reduces the risk of conflict. Evidence for the three signaling mechanisms is mixed. Finally, I use the case universe of East Asian wars to assess the relevance of the mechanisms, suggest theoretical refinements, and infer alternative theories of war.

Lee, Kanghee. "Accommodation in ELF communication among East Asian speakers of English." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2013. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/367200/.

Full text
Abstract:
The global spread of English and its wide-ranging use worldwide have exerted a great influence on the socio-cultural and sociolinguistic situation and led to a substantial change in language use, pedagogy and policy. This changing situation of English use has brought about the new emerging mode of communication, which is English as a lingua franca (henceforth ELF). The hybridity and heterogeneity is an inevitable result of frequent and widespread language contact in ELF situations, and this variability and diversity is characterised as the primary nature of ELF communication. This fluid and hybrid nature of ELF communication has resulted from the need for more accommodative and adaptive behaviour in the interaction. Therefore, accommodation has been considered as one of the most influential and effective pragmatic strategies in ELF. The research reported in this thesis aimed to investigate how flexibly and effectively ELF speakers deal with the variability and diversity by employing various accommodative strategies, and the study is particularly focused on pragmatic accommodation among East Asian ELF speakers. The findings of the study show that East Asian speakers of ELF strategically and dynamically engage in pragmatic processes of co-construction of meaning and accommodation and adopt convergent pragmatic strategies such as repetition, paraphrase, and utterance completion. The high frequency of accommodation strategies for solidarity seems to indicate that East Asian speakers of ELF draw on their own cultural values and communicative behaviours, which emphasise positive politeness and rapport-oriented relationships in conversation, and the result suggests the need for reconsideration of communicative competence in order to foreground the significance of pragmatic and strategic competence in intercultural communication settings. The study provides pedagogical implications of the need for awareness on sociolinguistic issues in teachers education and suggests a more ELF-oriented and diversity-driven teaching approach.

In this paper, we first proposed the regional physical capital, and the regional physical capital of the importance of risk sharing. The ten countries of East Asia face the risk into international capital markets, regional physical capital, and international trade of these three risk sharing channels, and use of GDP variance decomposition method to measure the three channels risk sharing situation. The empirical results show that:1.East Asia regional physical capital to absorb the impact of GDP for very large. 2.International capital markets played a very small role. 3.The increasing integration of the international trade market will reduce the risk sharing. 4.The East Asian region can not spread the risks as high as 80%, but this phenomenon after the Asian financial crisis has gradually reduced its risk can not be assessed, there have been similar OECD countries only 60% of the standard. This study also explains the international trade market will result in reducing the risk of trade of the reasons for risk sharing: 1. Importers and exporters through the credit agreement will be the number of commodity prices and the sale and purchase agreement has been through pre-determined, so risk can not be assessed the situation. 2. Trade flows do not contribute to cross-country consumption smoothing, is that central bank attempt to neutralize the impact of foreign capital inflows on domestic credit market.

Asia has the strongest monsoon system in the world and has the most population continent. In addition to Indian monsoon, East Asia is another area with strong monsoon system, high population and high aerosol pollution. The relevant studies show that aerosol causes decrease in surface temperature, reduction of precipitation and the weakness of monsoon system. However, less research was studied further into the dynamical feedback. This study focuses on the how aerosol will change the East Asian summer monsoon. We apply the NCAR/CESM global model with slab ocean model to get a better ocean feedback, and simulate the year 1850 and 2000 emission scenarios in order to estimate the influence of anthropogenic aerosol forcing and to approach the problem from different perspectives, including dynamical feedback. The result shows that in total aerosol forcing, the direct radiative forcing is main-ly on the high aerosol distribution area. Aerosol indirect effect follow the cloud movement of the synoptic system and influence the whole Asia. The mean regional surface temperature and precipitation decreased by -1.07°C and -0.46 mm/day, respec-tively, over East Asia , but the responses vary significantly from region to region. The dynamical feedback of aerosol forcing, which affect the sea surface temperature and the strength of Pacific high ridge by indirect effect, shows that the wind-evaporation-SST feedback causes the inconsistency distribution between surface temperature and radiation. The main aerosol emission region shows the reduction of temperature, but cause the updraft at the mei-yu front and has more precipitation in the result. This may due to trigger the Pacific-Japan pattern (P-J pattern) feedback, while we see the similar structure in the result. Overall, aerosol particles cause large regional subsidence anomaly, resulting in weakened summer monsoon. When considering only absorbing (black carbon) or non-absorbing (sulfate) aero-sols, the changes in surface temperature are +0.18°C and -0.53°C, respectively; where-as the changes in precipitation are -0.35 mm/day and -0.34 mm/day, respectively. Non-absorbing aerosol can scatter the solar radiation, causing the temperature decrease and stabilize atmosphere. Absorbing aerosol shows heating atmosphere can com-pensate the radiation reduction at surface, while the combined effect shows stabilizing atmosphere. The dynamical feedback of WES feedback and P-J pattern are show in the absorbing and non-absorbing aerosol result, only with a weaker phenomenon.

Affected by the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and the global financial crisis in 2009, Asian countries have noticed the importance of regional cooperation to stabilize national economies. Forming a currency union is one way of regional cooperation, which can minimize transaction costs incurred and accelerate cross-region trades. This paper follows the optimal currency area model by Bayoumi and Eichengreen(1997) to examine the possibility of forming a monetary union in Asian countries. 12 countries selected to investigate empirically whether there are any groupings of East Asian economies, including Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippine, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. The data contains 66 samples within 30 years. The paper conducts the ordinal least square method to analyze the exchange rate variation affected by the economic variables, such as the difference of output variations, the size of nations, the openness of trade, the difference of inflation variations and the difference of real interest rates. Based on the regression, prediction of the trends of the optimal currency index is made. The paper concludes that there is possibility for Asian countries to form a currency union. China is the first choice to be the anchor of currency union, and Australia should be chosen as a partial anchor for the south part of Asian countries.
