Abstract:
This book explores how market power competition between states can create disruptions in the global political economy and potentially lead to territorial aggression and war. When a state’s firms have the ability to set prices in a key commodity market like oil or natural gas, state leaders can benefit from increased revenue, stability, and political leverage. Given these potential benefits, states may be motivated to expand their territorial reach in order to gain or maintain such market power. This market power motivation can sometimes lead to war. However, when states are economically interdependent, they may be constrained from using force to achieve their market power goals. This can open up an opportunity for institutional settlements. However, in some cases, institutional rules and procedures can preclude states from reaching a settlement in line with their market power ambitions. When this happens, states may opt for strategic delay and try to gradually accumulate market power over time through salami tactics. To explore how these dynamics play out empirically, the authors examine three cases of market power competition in hard commodity markets: Iraq’s invasion and occupation of Kuwait to seize market power in the oil export market, Russia’s territorial encroachment into Georgia and Ukraine to preserve and expand its market power in the natural gas market, and China’s ongoing use of strategic delay and gray zone tactics in the South and East China Seas to maintain its dominant position in the global market for rare earth elements.

Abstract:
Abstract On the Moon, Mars, or any location beyond Earth, where even the oxygen you breathe is made in a manufacturing process controlled by someone else, can you be free? Interplanetary Liberty: Building Free Societies in the Cosmos explores the conditions for freedom beyond Earth, proposing that space is especially prone to tyrannous coercive government. Rather than just accept this outcome, the book explores how political and economic arrangements, as well as facets of the legal system, science, engineering, art, and education in extraterrestrial settlements can be developed to encourage the emergence and persistence of free government in the cosmos. These efforts will maximise the chances of liberty taking hold beyond Earth, but they may be essential in the longer-term survival and development of human freedom anywhere in the cosmos, including Earth.

Abstract:
The Pacific Ocean is the world's largest and deepest ocean, spanning about one-third of the earth's surface. Despite its size, the Pacific has received only scant global historical attention when compared to the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. However, the Pacific has played a prominent role intermittently in world history, highlighted by Austronesian expansion, Manila Galleon trade, eighteenth-century European exploration, and the intense island-hopping military campaigns of World War II. At the same time, such historical interest did not translate into a familiar timeline integrating this watery geographical feature into a larger world historical framework. This article argues that there is more discontinuity than continuity to this ocean, and its history is best broken down by three distinct periods of exploration and settlement.

Abstract:
From the summer of 1918 Bruno Taut had been collecting political and, above all, socialist texts. He prepared excerpts from essays on urban and land issues in such a way that, together with 30 handwritten drawings, they describe the earth's surface as a "good dwelling" for everyone. In his opinion, the prerequisite for this was the elimination of all cities and states. Taut's aim was to show the consequences of an even distribution of people under the conditions of a need arising from the inner necessity of each individual. The book should enable its readers to reflect “on what has to be considered in the present when building new settlements. Their unlimited variety of shapes could almost be called vegetable and organic. “The Dissolution of Cities”, published in August 1920, was Bruno Taut's fourth book of utopian architectural visions after “Die Stadtkrone” (1917/1919), “Alpine Architecture” (1918 / February 1920), and “Der Weltbaumeister” (June 1920).

Robin, Libby, Robert Heinsohn, and Leo Joseph, eds. Boom and Bust. CSIRO Publishing, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643097094.

Abstract:
In Boom and Bust, the authors draw on the natural history of Australia's charismatic birds to explore the relations between fauna, people and environment in a continent where variability is 'normal' and rainfall patterns not always seasonal. They consider changing ideas about deserts and how these have helped us understand birds and their behaviour in this driest of continents. The book describes the responses of animals and plants to environmental variability and stress. It is also a cultural concept, when it is used to capture the patterns of change wrought by humans in Australia, where landscapes began to become cultural about 55,000 years ago as ecosystems responded to Aboriginal management. In 1788, the British settlement brought, almost simultaneously, both agricultural and industrial revolutions to a land previously managed by fire for hunting. How have birds responded to this second dramatic invasion? Boom and Bust is also a tool for understanding global change. How can Australians in the 21st century better understand how to continue to live in this land as its conditions are still dynamically unfolding in response to the major anthropogenic changes to the whole Earth system? This interdisciplinary collection is written in a straightforward and accessible style. Many of the writers are practising field specialists, and have woven their personal field work into the stories they tell about the birds.
