Abstract:
Jokes were considered low and insignificant in traditional Chinese literature. Ssu-shu hsiao is witty and provocative, different from other conventional and contemporary jestbooks for its parodic relationship with the Four Books, which were the core-texts of Neo-Confucianism and civil service examinations. The purpose of this study is to examine the late Ming jestbook, Ssu-shu hsiao, and analyze its cultural value, sociopolitical implications, and psychological concepts. This dissertation is divided into four chapters. Chapter one contains two important parts: It establishes the ground of historical studies relevant to the significance of the Four Books and Five Classics as well as the tradition of humor and jest. Part two provides an introduction of the text Ssu-shu hsiao and a description of my interpretive strategy. In order to help the reader understand the Chinese and Western theories of humor and literary tropes related to Ssu-shu hsiao, I direct my discussion to the following issues: imitation, allusion, quotation, parody, intertextuality, and paradox. Through the comparison between Ssu-shu hsiao and two other contemporary jestbooks, Hsien-hsien p'ien and Hsiao-fu, we can understand that the jokes of the late Ming were considered as public property used by people regardless of authorship. Chapter two investigates jokes in relation to the civil service examinations. Through examination books in the bookmarkets, we know the commercialized texts available for the prospective examinees; such a cultural phenomenon sheds light on the derailing of educational function from the level of self-cultivation to that of profit-making. The downward transformation of intellectual status from the Sung dynasty to the Ming resulted from defects in various factors. Jokes concerning the examination consisted of those making fun of the forms and contents of the eight-legged essays. The methods that enable one to become an expert of this type of prose include the memorization of the Four Books, Five Classics, and their commentaries, imitating the words and teachings of ancient sage-kings. Chapter three deals with the Sung-Ming pedagogical authority, Neo-Confucianism or the so-called "True Way Learning," and its activity of "learning by discussion" (chiang-hs Ueh). The factional disputes, philosophical debates, and the problem of legitimacy are signaled by the jokes targeting the Ch'eng Brothers and Chu Hsi. The equalization of the scholars of "True Way Learning" and "mountain-recluse" ("shan-jen") was an indication of the decline of intellectual status in the late Ming. Chapter four discusses gender and sexuality in the bawdy jokes of Ssu-shu hsiao. Dirty jokes expose the conflict of moral principle and pleasure-pursuit. The male jokesters manipulated gender stereotypes humorously by which we can probe into the problems such as the practice of concubinage, the remarriage of widows, and female same-sex relationship and adultery. Joking on male same-sex sexuality is also discussed. A conclusion recapitulates the key issues of the previous chapters.

Abstract:
The English reformation, unlike that in Germany and Switzerland, evolved over a fairly long span of time. At first Luther's works were sold unchecked by English booksellers, being first prohibited in 1520. Over the next few years the advance of reforming ideas was considered so serious as to merit the further attention of the English Crown. By 1524 it was found necessary to enforce a law prohibiting the importation of theological texts into England, and efforts were made to suppress the further spread of the Protestant heresy throughout the realm. However, despite the Act of Parliament and a wave of persecutions the church was unable to stop the influx of prohibited books, which came off the printing presses of Germany and the Low Countries. With the aid of the revised version of the S.T.C. and additional catalogues of early printed writings, it has been possible to compile a list of foreign publications, all of which were intended for the English reader. These texts printed in the vernacular were written and commissioned by English writers forced into exile for their own safety, but also determined to establish Protestant Ideas In their own country. It is difficult to determine the exact numbers of Protestant books entering the country, but some Indication of their appeal can be found from the lists of prohibited books issued by the Ecclesiastical authorities. A detailed examination of these publications yields a clear picture of the theological teaching of Englands earliest Protestants. By carefully comparing these ideas with those of earlier heretics and contemporary reformers, it has been possible to assess the extent to which outside ideas has influenced the minds of these men. Further analysis has revealed the original and subtle genius of men who combined the ideas of the Continental reformers with those native to the English tradition, in order to produce a reformed theology which appealed to the unique situation in their own country.

Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the circulation networks and the patterns of collection of Italian printed books in France in the sixteenth century. Although the cultural relations between the Italian and French territory have been studied, a systematic survey to assess the impact of books on the shaping of the French Renaissance has never been attempted. The first section of this study examines the trade routes and networks which facilitated the circulation of Italian printed books across the French territory. Because of the nature of the French early modern book trade, focused primarily on two major centres (Paris and Lyon), a geographical division has been adopted in investigating this phenomenon. Chapter one explores the trade networks existing in sixteenth-century Lyon, from the powerful Compagnie des Libraires to the activity of the libraires italianisants in the second half of the century. Chapter two examines the importance of Italian editions in Paris. Chapter three is devoted to the circulation of Italian books in the provinces and the impact of large regional centres and trade routes on the availability of books locally. Chapter four investigates private networks and their importance in making specific texts available to French readers. The second section of this study investigates the status and importance of Italian printed books within French Renaissance libraries. Chapter five looks into the development of the French Royal library and the role played by Italian items in defining its identity as an institution. Chapter six examines the presence of Italian books in French aristocratic and courtly collections. Chapter seven is devoted to the libraries of the French literary milieu, analysing the extent to which Italian books were cherished as literary exemplars, particularly with regard to vernacular texts. Chapter eight examines the presence of Italian books in professional collections, with particular attention here given to texts in Latin and other scholarly languages imported from Italy. The conclusion draws all of these strands together, looking at the specific role played by Italian culture, through the printed book, on the development of the French Renaissance. A catalogue of about 2,400 Italian printed books with early modern French provenance is included as an appendix volume. This data provides the evidential basis for this study.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses a change in the ways people composed and engaged with texts during the Warring States (481-221 BCE) period in Early China. It examines changes in the textual sphere as a result of an emergent manuscript culture, that is to say, the increased spread and reliance on manuscript texts for the communication of ideas. This shift moved away from the predominantly oral, commemorative, and ritual use of text in earlier periods, and provided key elements that would function in the text based discourse of the early empires. It influenced the way text across a variety of genres of writing was used and understood, structured and composed, and how it was collected and combined to form new arguments. I focus on texts from the Documents ?, and Odes ? genres, in addition to philosophical texts dealing with the past, and collections of sayings and arguments dealing with questions from cosmological to ethical issues. These materials form the mainstay of Warring States intellectual discourse, and exemplify the following textual developments: 1) the rise of collecting materials into compilations; 2) the emergence of genre classification; 3) the development of new authorship functions, 3) an increase in textual structuring and the integration of lore about the past, 4) the development of commentarial traditions, 5) the emergence of an explicit, self-reflexive understanding of writing and transmission, 6) advances in material structuring of manuscript-texts that interrelate form and content. The analysis is based primarily on excavated materials not edited during the early empires, and engages with comparative and interdisciplinary theory. It argues against models solely based on transmitted sources, which explained Warring States developments as a response to socio-political contexts. Instead, it posits developments in the textual culture itself as a necessary condition to explain the changes in intellectual discourse of the period.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how the paratexts to and physical features of English Tudor books about the New World presented the books’ content to their original readers. The contribution this thesis makes to knowledge is threefold. First, the field of study of English travel and colonial literature lacks a bibliographically informed account of how the books’ constitutive elements of type and paper affect meaning. Widespread use of modern editions of the few accessible texts effaces the originals’ rich aesthetic, structural and tactile forms and fails to comprehensively historicise the production and intentions of the books. The careful, contextualised examinations of typefounts and composition included in this thesis go beyond what has been previously done and suggest agendas for further, necessary and illuminating bibliographical work. Second, the thesis presents the first comprehensively investigative survey of how the paratextual elements of the books marketed the New World to Tudor England. It goes beyond John Parker’s fifty-year-old _Books to Build an Empire_ (1965) by considering the full range of forty-three editions’ paratextual apparatus, not just prefaces, proems and dedications. It is simultaneously a counterbalance to the narrow focus on Richard Hakluyt’s anthological _Principal Navigations_ (1598-1600). The thesis begins the much-needed recovery of the conceptual and publication histories of both the constitutive texts reprinted in _Principal Navigations_ and those not included in Hakluyt’s anthology that are nontheless relevant to the history of the genre. Third, this survey that challenges a still powerful teleology: that the publications were unequivocally books to build an empire. Many of these books were in fact marketed as recreational reads. As the paratextual, structural and material features of many of the books this thesis looks at are under-explored and under-reported, close examination of multiple exemplars was necessary to ensure that this thesis is a representative and reliable record of the marketing strategies used to promote Tudor books about America.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of royal acts printed in French before 1601. The kingdom of France is a natural place to begin a study of royal acts. It possessed one of the oldest judicial systems in Europe, which had been established during the reign of St Louis (1226-1270). By the sixteenth century, French kings were able to issue royal acts without any concern as to the distribution of their decrees. In addition, France was one of the leading printing centres in Europe. This research provides the first detailed analysis of this neglected category of texts, and examines the acts’ significance in French legal, political and printing culture. The analysis of royal acts reveals three key historical practices regarding the role of printing in judiciary matters and public affairs. The first is how the French crown communicated to the public. Chapters one and two discuss the royal process of dissemination of edicts and the language of royal acts. The second is how printers and publishers manoeuvred between the large number of royal promulgations and public demand. An overview of the printing industry of royal acts is provided in chapter three and the printers of these official documents are covered in chapter four. The study of royal acts also indicates which edicts were published frequently. The last two chapters examine the content of royal decrees and discuss the most reprinted acts. Chapter five explores the period before 1561 and the final chapter discusses the last forty years of the century. An appendix of all royal acts printed before 1601, which is the basis of my research for this study, is included. It is the first comprehensive catalogue of its kind and contains nearly six thousand entries of surviving royal acts printed before 1601.

Resumo: Dentre os muitos títulos publicados entre 1808 e 1822 na Impressão Régia do Rio de Janeiro, este trabalho se concentra nos romances. Os títulos dos documentos e das obras diversas publicados nesse período foram catalogados ainda no século XIX. Entretanto, boa parte dos exemplares já havia desaparecido, fazendo com que o método utilizado para identificação dos títulos incluísse os anúncios de jornais. Como também eram anunciadas publicações feitas em Lisboa, havia a dúvida quanto à delimitação das que efetivamente foram editadas na Impressão Régia do Rio de Janeiro. A confusão de locais de impressão levantava a hipótese de uma relação editorial entre a Impressão Régia estabelecida na colônia e sua congênere lisboeta. Tal hipótese foi refutada após investigarmos a casa impressora portuguesa e os títulos de romances nela editados. Concluímos que somente seria possível definir quais foram os romances feitos pela primeira casa impressora oficialmente instalada no Brasil com a localização dos exemplares e a confirmação, pelos dados das folhas de rosto, de que foram impressos no Rio de Janeiro. Por meio de buscas, localizamos quase todos os romances catalogados e delimitamos os que saíram dos prelos da Impressão Régia do Rio de Janeiro. No processo, traçamos a história editorial de cada um deles, verificamos de que maneira eram anunciados pelos livreiros nos jornais e analisamos esses livros do ponto de vista material e textual. Raros e de localização trabalhosa, esses romances são atualmente pouco lembrados ou totalmente desconhecidos. No entanto, têm sua importância nos estudos sobre a circulação de livros no período colonial e em anos posteriores e, certamente, fizeram parte da formação do gosto do público por livros do gênero
Abstract: Among many titles published between 1808 and 1822 by Impressão Régia (Royal Printing) from Rio de Janeiro, this thesis concentrates on the novels. In the 19th century the organization of documents and different works published in such period began. However, a significant part of the copies had already disappeared at that time. So, the method used for identifying the titles included newspaper announcements. As publications made in Lisbon were also announced, there was a doubt regarding the delimitation of the ones which had been effectively published by the Impressão Régia from Rio de Janeiro. The confusion about printing places supported the hypothesis about an editorial relation between the Impressão Régia established in the colony and its congener in Lisbon. Such hypothesis was refuted by us after investigating the Portuguese printing house and the titles of novels published by it. We concluded that it would only be possible to define which novels were published by the first printing house officially established in Brazil by means of the localization of the copies and the confirmation, through the data printed on the title page, that they were printed in Rio de Janeiro. We localized almost every novel which were catalogued and delimited those which originated from the press of Impressão Régia from Rio de Janeiro. During the process, we framed the editorial history of each one of them, verify the way they were announced by the booksellers in the newspapers and analyzed these books from the material and textual points view. Being rare and hard to be located, nowadays, these novels are seldom remembered or totally unknown. Nevertheless, they are important for studies about the circulation of books during the colonial period and the subsequent years, and they definitely played an important part in forming the audience's taste for novel reading

Abstract:
While scholarship often focuses on how early modern Italians used images in their devotions, particularly in the post-Tridentine era, little attention has been placed upon how laypeople engaged with devotional text during times of prayer and in their everyday lives. Studies of early modern devotional texts have explored their literary content, investigated their censorship by the Church, or concentrated upon an elite readership. This thesis, instead, investigates how ordinary devotees interacted with holy words in their material form, which I have termed ‘material prayers’. Since this thesis developed under the aegis of the interdisciplinary research project, Domestic Devotions: The Place of Piety in the Italian Renaissance Home, 1400-1600, it focuses primarily on engagement with these material prayers in domestic spaces. Using an interdisciplinary approach drawing from material culture studies, literary history, social and cultural history, and art history, it brings together objects, images and archival sources to illuminate how devotees from across the socio-economic and literacy spectrums accessed and employed devotional text in their prayers and daily life. From holy words, Biblical excerpts, and prayers to textual symbols like the Sacred Monogram of the Name of Jesus, this thesis explores how and why these material prayers were employed for spiritual, apotropaic and intercessory purposes. It analyses material prayers not only in traditional textual formats (printed books and manuscripts), but also those that were printed on single-sheets of paper, inscribed on jewellery, or etched into the structure of the home. To convey how devotees engaged with and relied upon these material prayers, it considers a variety of inscribed objects, including those sanctioned by the Church as well as those which might be questioned or deemed ‘superstitious’ by ecclesiastical authorities. Sermons, Inquisition trial records, and other archival documents have been consulted to further illuminate the material evidence. The first part of the thesis, ‘On the Body’, considers the how devotees came into personal contact with texts by wearing prayers on their bodies. It examines a range of objects including prayers with protective properties, known as brevi, that were meant to be sealed in a pouch and worn around the neck, and more luxurious items of physical adornment inscribed with devotional and apotropaic text, such as necklaces and rings. The second part of the thesis enters the home to explore how the spaces people inhabited and the objects that populated their homes were decorated with material prayers. ‘In the Home’ begins with texts inscribed over the entryways of early modern Italian homes, and then considers how devotees decorated their walls with holy words and how the objects of devotion and household life were imbued with religious significance through the addition of pious inscriptions. By analysing these personal objects and the textual domestic sphere, this thesis argues that these material prayers cut across socio-economic classes, genders, and ages to embody quotidian moments of domestic devotion as well as moments of fear, anxiety and change.

Abstract:
In this dissertation I argue that print culture acted as a catalyst for change among Buddhists in modern China. Through examining major publication institutions, publishing projects, and their managers and contributors from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s, I show that the expansion of the scope and variety of printed works, as well as new the social structures surrounding publishing, substantially impacted the activity of Chinese Buddhists. In doing so I hope to contribute to ongoing discussions of the 'revival' of Chinese Buddhism in the modern period, and demonstrate that publishing, propelled by new print technologies and new forms of social organization, was a key field of interaction and communication for religious actors during this era, one that helped make possible the introduction and adoption of new forms of religious thought and practice.

Abstract:
The primary objective of the dissertation was to document the active role of the historical narratives disseminated by early printed illustrated books in identity-building processes. On the basis of Hungarian cultural artifacts it was demonstrated that illustrated early printed books were, and still are, influential carriers of visual and literary narratives. Yet they also functioned as objects through and in which individual and collective identities were articulated and consolidated. The long afterlives of the visual and literary content of the analyzed books, due to numerous editions, translations, adaptations and transpositions into other media, unified the historical imagery - a crucial component of the professional, cultural, religious and national identifications of the books’ recipients.The main subject of the thesis were richly illustrated incunabula and seventeenth-century books containing Latin-language histories of the Crown of St. Stephen: "Chronica Hungarorum" by János Thuróczy printed in Brno and Augsburg in 1488, "Mausoleum Regum et Ungariae Ducum" published in Nuremberg in 1664, "Trophaeum Domus Estorasianae" printed in Vienna in 1700, "Ungaricae Sanctitatis Indicia" by Gábor Hevenesi released in Trnava in 1692 and the life of St. Ladislas "Rex admirabilis s. vita S. Ladislai" penned by István Tarnóczy and printed in Vienna in 1681. The source-base was additionally extended by such visual media as seals, coins, illuminated codices, copperplates, sculptures and oil-paintings.The dissertation consists of five chapters preceded by a methodological introduction, which concentrates on the concept of imprinting. This term, used mainly in organizational theory and ethology, is applied to the source base as a useful conceptual framework which helps to better understand processes determining national identities in the pre-modern and contemporary era. It is also used to establish the importance of foundational circumstances for the subsequent modes of how national communities functioned. The following sections of the thesis analyze depictions of historical myths (first chapter), patron saints (second chapter), rulers of Hungary (third chapter) and of the representatives of nobility and aristocracy (fourth chapter). The inquiry focuses on dominant narratives, prevailing thematic threads and shifts of meaning that took place in the long term. The idiosyncrasy of the Hungarian identity discourse is discussed following an introduction of the complex historical and socio-political background. The original features of the Hungarian myth of origin, the “antemurale Christianitatis” concept, the cult of patron saints,coronation rituals and ethos of "natio Hungarica" are also stressed. Furthermore the thesis emphasises the disharmonious identity constructs especially characteristic for the reign of the Habsburgs, resulting from the conflicting loyalties of the Hungarian subjects and their rulers. The last, fifth chapter presents the dominant mechanisms and models of both perception and long-term reception of the books between late fifteenth century and today. It stresses the dissimilar reception trajectory of visual and literary narratives, the role of Latin as a language of "magyarization", and the longue durée of the foundational myths. Originating from the so-called chronicle tradition which, by virtue of the print medium, resides in the collective memories of the Hungarians up to the present day, these myths determine the ways the Hungarian political community imagined and still imagines itself as a nation.The methodology applied in my inquiry is that of broadly understood cultural studies. It not only includes approaches used by art historians and literary scholars, but also brings together the concept of sociological studies of book history (based on the communication model established by Robert Darnton and further elaborated by Thomas R. Adams and Nicolas Barker) and the perspective applied in identity studies.
Celem dysertacji było wykazanie aktywnej roli, jaką odgrywały w procesach tożsamościowotwórczych narracje historyczne rozpowszechniane poprzez ilustrowane książki drukowane. Na przykładzie węgierskich artefaktów kulturowych dowiedziono, że ilustrowane książki dawne były, i nadal są, wpływowym nośnikiem narracji obrazowych i literackich, oraz obiektami w obrębie i za pomocą których wyrażano i wzmacniano indywidualne i zbiorowe tożsamości. Długie oddziaływanie wizualnego i literackiego przekazu badanych książek, możliwe dzięki ich licznym edycjom, tłumaczeniom, adaptacjom i powtórzeniom w innych mediach, ujednoliciło korpus wyobrażeń historycznych, które stały się istotnym komponentem profesjonalnych, kulturowych, społecznych, religijnych i narodowych identyfikacji ich odbiorców.Głównym tematem pracy były bogato ilustrowane inkunabuły oraz siedemnastowieczne książki drukowane zawierające łacińskojęzyczne historie Korony Św. Stefana: brneńskie i augsburskie wydanie "Chronica Hungarorum" Jánosa Thuróczego z 1488 r., "Mausoleum Regum et Ungariae Ducum" wydane w Norymberdze w 1664 r., wiedeńskie "Trophaeum Domus Estorasianae" z 1700 r., tyrnawskie "Ungaricae Sanctitatis Indicia" Gábora Hevenesiego z 1692 r. oraz żywot św. Władysława "Rex admirabilis s. vita S. Ladislai" pióra Istvána Tarnóczego, wydany po raz pierwszy w 1681 r. w Wiedniu. Korpus analizowanych źródeł rozszerzono o takie media wizualne jak m.in. pieczęcie, monety, iluminacje książkowe, luźne grafiki, rzeźby i obrazy olejne.Dysertacja składa się z pięciu rozdziałów poprzedzonych wstępem metodologicznym wprowadzającym termin „imprinting” (wdrukowanie, wpajanie). Pojęciem tym, stosowanym w teorii organizacji oraz w etologii, posłużono się jako konceptem użytecznym w badaniu procesów kształtujących tożsamości narodowe w epoce przednowoczesnej i współczesnej. Zauważono, że termin ten pomaga lepiej zrozumieć znaczenie okoliczności fundacyjnych dla późniejszych sposobów funkcjonowania wspólnot narodowych. W kolejnych częściach pracy zbadano przedstawiania mitów historycznych (rozdział pierwszy), świętych patronów (rozdział drugi) i władców Królestwa Węgierskiego (rozdział trzeci) oraz przedstawicieli szlachty i arystokracji (rozdział czwarty). Zwrócono uwagę na dominujące narracje, wiodące wątki tematyczne, oraz przesunięcia znaczeniowe, jakie zachodziły w ich obrębie w długim ciągu czasowym. Specyfikę węgierskiego dyskursu tożsamościowego omówiono wprowadzając złożony kontekst historyczny i społeczno-polityczny. Podkreślono oryginalne cechy mitu etnogenezy, koncepcji "antemurale Christianitatis", kultu patronów, węgierskich rytuałów koronacyjnych oraz etosu szlacheckiego. Ponadto zwrócono uwagę na dysharmonijne konstrukty tożsamościowe wynikające z konfliktów lojalnościowych, szczególnie silnych w czasach panowania dynastii habsburskiej. W ostatnim, piątym, rozdziale pracy przedstawiono najważniejsze mechanizmy i modele odbioru ilustrowanych książek oraz obszary ich recepcji od końca piętnastego wieku po dzień dzisiejszy. Zwrócono uwagę na odmienną trajektorię recepcji narracji obrazowych i literackich, szczególną ‘madziaryzującą’ rolę łaciny, a także na długie trwanie mitów założycielskich, sięgających swoimi korzeniami najstarszych węgierskich kronik, które za sprawą druku mutatis mutandis przetrwały w zbiorowej pamięci Węgrów i zdeterminowały charakter węgierskiej wspólnoty politycznej.W pracy przyjęto perspektywę kulturoznawczą, uwzględniającą warsztat historyka sztuki i filologa, rozszerzoną o socjologiczne podejścia do historii książki (model komunikacji zaproponowany przez Roberta Darntona, i rozszerzony przez Thomasa R. Adamsa i Nicolasa Barkera) oraz szeroko rozumiane studia nad tożsamością (identity studies).
