Edwards, D. J. A. "Cognitive therapy and the restructuring of early memories through guided imagery." Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007853.

Full text
Abstract:
This article describes the application of a guided imagery psychodrama technique to emotionally charged early memories. Such memories provide access to core schemata about the self and social relationships. Two case studies illustrate how the imagery technique enables the therapist to identify and restructure key cognitions out of which the schemata are constructed. The need for techniques to modify developmentally primitive schemata is discussed. Examples are given of ways to assist the patient in confronting the strong affect that may be aroused and in dealing with cognitions that block the process. Effectiveness is discussed in terms of the contribution of a guided imagery session to the overall process of ''learning to learn'' that takes place in cognitive psychotherapy.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates theoretical propositions of Beck (1996), Epstein (1987), and Young (1999) that suggest maladaptive schemas operating as deep unconscious cognitions are intrinsically linked to the psychological health and wellbeing of the individual. To date, research on psychological health has mainly used self-report measures that focus on conscious processes. The primary aim of this thesis was to explore particular maladaptive schemas that purportedly operate unconsciously and to examine their relationship with self-reported psychological dysfunction. Bruhns (1990a) Cognitive Perceptual Theory of early childhood memories was employed as a vehicle to access schemas deemed outside of conscious awareness. These unconscious schemas were investigated in conjunction with current self-reported maladaptive schemas in Study 1 and psychological symptoms in Study 2. The participants in Study 1 comprised 249 undergraduate first year psychology students. There were 198 women and 50 men with a mean age of 22 years who were asked to write down four early childhood memories. The first two memories were spontaneous in order to reveal the most pressing underlying schemas. The next two early memories requested were relating to mother and to father, to gain schema information about relationship dynamics. The participants then filled out the short-form of Youngs (1998) Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S). Independent raters coded the memories for Youngs (1994) Early Maladaptive Schemas, and Last and Bruhns (1992) Object Relations categories of Perceptions of Others, Perceptions of the Self, Perception of Environment, and Degree of Interpersonal Contact, and Individual Distinctiveness. Polyserial correlations indicated that there were significant relationships between maladaptive schemas represented in early memories and self-reported maladaptive schemas. However, the lack of maladaptive schemas in memories being linked to the same maladaptive schemas that were being self-reported, suggested that the schemas represented in memories were tapping into a different source of information than conscious self-reports. A Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) was performed with the sample divided into three groups (low, medium and high YSQ-S scorers). The results showed that maladaptive schemas identified in early memories that corresponded to Youngs (1990) Disconnection and Rejection domain and, Last and Bruhns (1992) Object Relations theme of Perceiving the Environment as Unsafe, were significant predictors of people in the group with high levels of self-reported maladaptive schemas. These variables also differentiated people in the high group from those in the low group at a greater rate than chance (33 percent). Fiftysix percent of people were correctly allocated to the high group on the basis of representations of these particular schemas in their memories. When only the low and high groups were analysed, using individual schemas rather than domains, Mistrust/Abuse, Social Isolation, Emotional Deprivation and Subjugation schemas in the first analysis and Perceptions of the Environment as Unsafe in the second analysis were found to be significant predictors. These predictors correctly classified 70 percent of cross-validated cases in the high groups in both analyses. For Study 2, the participants comprised 278 undergraduate first year psychology students. There were 65 men and 206 women with a mean age of 22 years who provided accounts of four early childhood memories as in Study 1. They also completed the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI; Derogatis, 1993). As with Study 1, the accounts of the completed early childhood memories were coded by independent raters who examined the memories for Youngs (1994) Maladaptive Schemas and Last and Bruhns (1992) Object Relations categories. Additionally, following each memory, the participants rated their memories using Hermans and Hermans-Jansens (1995) list of Affect Terms. The sample was divided into three groups on the basis of the General Severity Index [GSI] scores (low, medium and high scorers) that were derived from the BSI (Derogatis, 1993). A Discriminant Function Analysis showed that maladaptive schemas identified in the memories that corresponded to Youngs (1990) Disconnection and Rejection domain were significant predictors of people in the group with high levels of self-reported psychological symptoms (Derogatis, 1993). Fifty percent of people (which is greater than the chance rate of 33 percent) were correctly predicted as belonging to the high group on the basis of representations of schemas from this domain. In another DFA analysis that used individual schemas instead of domains, Abandonment and Insufficient Self-Control, together with Perceiving the Environment to be safe and Negative Affect, were found to be significant predictors that correctly allocated 58 percent of people into the high GSI group. Further analysis using only the low and high groups resulted in 83 percent of people in the high group being correctly identified on the basis of representations of Abandonment, Insufficient Self-Control and Perceiving the Environment to be safe. These results endorse the relevance of the relationships among an underlying sense of abandonment and insufficient self-control with high levels of psychological symptoms of distress. Taken together, the findings from both studies support the theoretical proposition that schemas residing outside of conscious awareness can have a pervasive link with psychological health and wellbeing. A particularly important discovery was that a relatively small number of schemas centered around perceptions of Disconnection and Rejection from others, that were operating unconsciously, were significantly linked to people in both studies who reported a wide range of psychological difficulties. It was concluded that investigating object relations, affect, and Youngs (1990) maladaptive schemas in early memories, is an efficient and possibly essential method of gaining information that may otherwise not be obtained from self-report measures exclusively. Consequently, in therapy, maladaptive schemas associated with disconnection and rejection represented in clients early childhood memories can be viewed as very important unconscious schemas to examine. This is especially necessary given that these schemas may not be consciously accessed or easily articulated by clients, and yet seem to be intrinsically linked to a range of conscious psychological difficulties.

The present research aims to know and understand how the life trajectories have made men choose the teaching profession related to Early Childhood Education, besides analyzing the process of insertion and permanence in the daily life with the children and to perceive how the memory and the experiences contributed to the development of the professional identity of these teachers. As a scenario, we have the Carioca Municipal Education Network, which is considered the largest Network in Latin America and had as a landmark the classification and convocation of male teachers in specific competitions for Early Childhood Education in the years 2010 and 2012. Such research has a qualitative character and used the methodology of Life Stories linked to the interviews, as a means of obtaining data that answered the different questions that permeated the study. In the course of the investigation, a mapping of the Teachers Men who work in Early Childhood Education was developed, looking at different perspectives: National, Regional, Municipality of Rio de Janeiro and its Regional Education Coordinations (CREs). Fifteen men from different CREs were interviewed, dealing with different subjects, among them: Formation, Choice of Profession, Daily Life in Childhood Education, Gender, Masculinities, Teaching Identity, among others. It should be pointed out that we will not have a denunciation character, as used in many studies, but we will consider different events as relevant aspects in the constitution of the teaching and personal identity. We have as theoretical framework the studies of Louro (1998), Connell (1995), Scott (1990), Nóvoa (1995), Huberman (1995), among others.

Abstract:
Energy consumption is becoming more important for processor architectures, where the number of cores inside the chip is increasing and the total power budget is kept at the same level or even reduced. Thus, energy saving techniques such as frequency scaling options and automatic shutdown of sub-systems are being used to maintain the trade-off between power and performance. To deliver high performance, current Chip Multiprocessors (CMPs) integrate large caches in order to reduce the average memory access latency by allocating the applications’ working set on-chip. These cache memories have traditionally been designed to exploit temporal locality by using smart replacement policies, and spatial locality by fetching entire cache lines from memory on a cache miss. However, recent studies have shown that the number of sub-blocks within a line that are actually used is often low, and those sub-blocks that are used are accessed only a few times before becoming dead (that is, never accessed again). Additionally, many of the cache lines remain powered for a long period of time even if the data is not used again, or is invalid. For modified cache lines, the cache memory waits until the line is evicted to perform the write-back to next memory level. These write-backs compete with read requests (processor demand and cache prefetch), increasing the pressure on the memory controller. For these reasons, the energy efficiency and performance of cache memories are not ideal. This thesis introduces cache line usage predictors to increase the energy efficiency of cache memories. We propose the Dead Sub-Block Predictor (DSBP) and Dead Line and Early Write-Back Predictor (DEWP) mechanisms to enable energy savings without performance degradation. DSBP is used to predict which sub-blocks of a cache line will be actually accessed and how many times they will be used in order to bring into the cache only those sub-blocks that are necessary, and power them off after they are accessed the predicted number of times. DEWP predicts dead lines as soon as they receive the last access, and turns off these lines. Dirty lines are scheduled for write-back after the last write operation occurs, increasing the energy savings potential and also reducing the pressure on the memory controller. Both proposed mechanisms also reduce pollution in cache memories by prioritizing dead lines for eviction in the existing replacement policy. Although each introduced mechanism is capable of performing separately inside a system, both mechanisms can also be mixed in the same cache hierarchy. This mixed implementation is interesting because the sub-block granularity is more suitable for cache levels closer to the processor, where the cache lines are quickly evicted, while the Last- Level Cache (LLC) tends to use the whole cache line before its eviction. In order to evaluate our proposed mechanisms, we introduce the Simulator of Non- Uniform Cache Architectures (SiNUCA). This cycle-accurate microarchitecture simulator is validated in terms of performance and energy consumption by comparing it to a real processor. Our performance results were obtained executing single-threaded applications from SPEC-CPU2006 and multi-threaded applications from SPEC-OMP2001 and NASNPB benchmark suites. The energy related results were obtained by integrating SiNUCA with the Multi-core Power, Area, and Timing (McPAT) framework and the CACTI power modeling tool. When applying our mechanisms on all the cache levels, we observe on average a 36% energy reduction for DSBP, 25% energy reduction using DEWP and an average reduction of 37% in the energy consumption applying DSBP on L1 and L2 and DEWP on the LLC. All these reductions caused a negligible performance loss of less than 4% on average.

Mowat, Fiona Anne. "Ritualising the dead : decorated marble cinerary memorials in the context of early Imperial culture and art." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/28748.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the imagery of funerary ritual that expresses the commemoration of both the living and the dead in the art of the marble cinerary memorials of the early Empire. This group of objects includes decorated marble artefacts associated with cremation burial between the Augustan period and the reign of Antoninus Pius: ash chests (or cineraria); ash altars and grave altars (with or without ash cavities); as well as round urns and vase-shaped urns. The iconography chosen for cinerary memorials by individuals in the early Empire reflects those individuals’ concerns to remember families and friends and in turn to be remembered. This research approaches the analysis of funerary iconography holistically as embedded in its contemporary culture, as opposed to the focus on the art of various sub-cultures of Roman society, seen in recent scholarship. Items with adequate ancient provenance are used to create a sample dataset that represents individuals that belong to a middle to high income-group of society, individuals that are united through their ability to pay and commission these memorials, rather than by class. The epigraphic material, studied alongside the tomb analysis, indicates that this socio-economic group included people of different legal statuses: slaves, freed-people, non-elites and known-elites. Thus we are able to examine how artistic motifs, and also imperial iconography and culture, were received by a cross-section of society. The use of semiotics allows symbols to be analysed in conjunction with other methods such as examining narration and abstraction. This theoretical framework results in the extraction of meaning from seemingly generic motifs and connects this interpretation with contemporaneous cultural norms. Using these methods and the sample dataset, the memorial typology is examined as indicative of a focal point for funerary cult, through the connection between the object as a replacement altar for ritual, and as a house or shrine for the commemoration of the dead. The iconography associated with the memorials therefore relates to both the ritual context (garlands and other ritualistic motifs) and to the object as a small building (the architectonic façade and doors; garden and vegetative iconography). It also relates to the commemoration of the dead (portraiture and honorific iconography) and in particular to the idea of the spirit or manes of the deceased as being immortalised through the memorial (underworld and mythological iconography). All elements, then, point to the focus of the object in funerary ritual which enables the living to honour the spirit of the deceased and acts as a memento of family and friends, bringing together both the living and the dead in art and inscription.

Abstract:
Between 1952 and 1957, Igor Stravinsky surprised the world of music by gradually incorporating serialism into his style of composition. Although Stravinsky still used the neo-classical trait of making strong references to the music of earlier periods, musical analyses of this transitional period have focused on serial aspects to the exclusion of anachronistic elements. Evidence of Stravinsky's possible use of musical structures adapted from earlier times is found in his consistent use of musical figures that are closely related to the cadences of the late Medieval and Renaissance eras. By fully addressing these neo-classical traits in future analyses, music theorists will gain an additional perspective, which is helpful in understanding the music of Stravinsky's transitional period.

Thesis, Lyon 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LYO20001/document.

Abstract:
This work is founded on the study of three funerary complexes of outlying suburbs located in the capital cities of Mediomatrici (Metz-Divodurum), Nervii (Bagay-Bagacum) and Morini (Thérouanne-Tervanna). Our study is based on a corpus composed of more than 480 funerary structures, which has been amended by the data issued from the other funerary discoveries carried out in these three cities, from the 18th century to nowadays. Based upon that documentation, we propose an analysis of funerary practices in use in the North of Gaul and more particularly in the province of Gallia Belgica and of their evolution in the first three centuries of our area. The first part of this work is related to the organization of the funerary areas in an urban context through the analysis of different parameters: places and settlement dynamic of funerary areas, internal organization and space structuring as well as the mode of distribution of the structures (functional, chronological and social). The following chapters are related to the understanding and interpretation of the different funerary practices and gestures, which may have been observed during the study of the structures of our corpus. To do that, we have tried to reconstruct the different steps of the funerary process and to replace the whole practices in the order in which they took place. First, we took an interest in the data connected with the stage of the body cremation, data observed during the excavation of the funerary pyres, through the examination of the pit structure, the methods of treatment of the body as well as the role and the origin of the grave goods used around the pyre. Then, we moved on to the place of final deposition of the remains by presenting the constituent elements of the grave, the different types of funerary structures we have been confronted with as well as the varied modes of deposition of the bones and their organization within the sepulchral pit. A specific attention has also been given to the steps which are relative to the transfer and to the modes of deposition of the bones of the deceased in the grave as well as the practices and body movements which follow that. Finally, in a last chapter, we have analyzed the different deposits of the funerary goods in order to define as well as possible the different gestures which were pointed out through the archaeological remains, and which were made at the time of the composition of the grave but also throughout the funeral or during the memorial feasts where respects to the deceased were paid. This overall study is based on a detailed catalogue of the tombs which is composed of two volumes (volume 1: Metz “Avenue André Malraux”, volume 2: Bavay “La Fache des Près Aulnoys” and Thérouanne “Les Oblets”) displaying by chronological phases the observations made during the excavation work, the inventory of the grave goods, as well as the results of the studies of animal and human bones rests

Abstract:
Naps have been shown to benefit declarative memories in early childhood. This benefit has been associated with sleep spindles during the nap. However, whether young children’s naps and their accompanying physiology benefit other forms of declarative learning is unknown. Using a novel storybook task, we found performance was better following a nap compared to performance following an equivalent interval spent awake. Moreover, performance was better the following day if a nap followed learning. Further, change in post-nap performance was positively associated to the amount of time spent in slow wave sleep. This suggests that slow wave sleep in naps may support episodic memory consolidation in early childhood. Taken in conjunction with prior work, these results suggest that multiple features of brain physiology during naps may contribute to declarative memory processing in early childhood.

Abstract:
Although few studies have addressed the memories of the traumatic impact of early shame experiences and the positive impact of early memories of warmth and safeness (EMWS) with parents and peers on social anxiety (SA), none addressed the relationship between SA and submissive compassion and all of these variables together. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the differential impact of the memories of the traumatic impact of early experiences of shame in submissive compassion, exploring the mediating role of SA and the moderating role of EMWS with parents and peers in this relationship. The cross-sectional study included two community samples: university students (N= 357; Mage = 20.54 DP = 1,62) and general population (N = 158 Mage = 42,83 DP = 9.80). SA, EMWS with parents and peers, the memories of the traumatic impact of early shame experiences and submissive compassion were assessed. In both samples, the memories of the traumatic impact of early shame experiences had a positive association with SA and submissive compassion, However, EMWS with parents and peers had a negative relationship with all of the variables mentioned. SA mediated the relationship between the memories of the traumatic impact of early shame experiences and submissive compassion in both samples and the moderating effect of EMWS with parents and peers in these relationships varied according to the sample. Clinical implications emphasize the relevance of compassion-focused therapies in preventive and therapeutic approaches. Other results are discussed, as well as other clinical implications and contributions of the present study.

Kangas, Ryan R. "Remembering Mahler : music and memory in Mahler's early symphonies." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/6537.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the critical tradition, Gustav Mahler’s music is full of memories, memories portrayed most frequently as being Mahler’s recollections of his own childhood. My study interrogates this trope—that Mahler’s entire oeuvre is an autobiographical puzzle waiting to be solved—using each of his first four symphonies as a case study. To accomplish this, I offer interpretations of each symphony, which rely on an analysis of the musical substance of the piece, and also refer to Mahler’s programs, potential allusions to preexisting material, and critical reception. Chapter 1 lays the theoretical foundation for these analyses, which draws on cultural memory, nostalgia studies, and the hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur. In Chapter 2, by proposing connections between the Third Symphony and both the antisemetic political climate in Vienna and Mahler’s hopes for a conducting career in the city, I suggest that interpretation can make recourse to the composer’s biography without focusing on his childhood. Moreover, I use Mahler’s biography to suggest new avenues for approaching his music, rather than using his music to shed light on his life. In Chapter 3, I move interpretation away from details of the composer’s biography: I analyze his First Symphony with Freudian repression as a theoretical framework, but I focus on how repression might eludicate both the musical processes in the piece itself and the persistent recourse made to the suppressed program in reception of the piece, rather than attempting to explain Mahler’s own supposed neuroses. After proposing several ways in which music processes might resonate with forgetting in the form of repression, in Chapters 4 and 5, the Second and Fourth Symphonies are discussed in terms of mourning and nostalgia respectively, defined as two specfic types of remembrance. Turning in the final chapter to the later Seventh Symphony, I unwind the implications of the standard image of Mahler as a figure obsessed with the past. Mahler’s music grants us no access to his memories, but it does allow us to remember him. Our memories are all that remains, and the Mahler that we hear has always been merely our own construction.

This study explored the mediator role of external shame and fear of compassion from others in the link between early positive memories and current feelings of social safeness, in a sample of 400 women. Path analysis revealed that the ability to evoke early positive experiences is associated to a lower tendency to feel fear of receiving help and compassion from others and decreased feelings of inferiority, which seem to promote feelings of social safeness. These findings highlight the importance of addressing shame and fear of compassion, particularly when working with women who perceive the social world as unsafe and threatening.

Research on human development and functioning has highlighted the importance of early emotional and relational experiences. Particularly, an association between the absence of early positive memories and the presence of disordered eating has been evidenced by recent investigations. However, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. Using a sample of 490 women, the hypothesis that early positive memories are negatively associated with disordered eating via social safeness and a positive relationship with one’s body image was tested via path analysis. The tested model explained 51% of eating psychopathology’s variance, and revealed a good adjustment to the empirical data. Additionally, social safeness and body appreciation were revealed as mediators of the impact of early warm and safe memories on disordered eating, when controlling for the effect of BMI. These findings suggest the importance of targeting social safeness and acceptance, especially when defining potentially effective programmes for the prevention of eating disorders.

Abstract:
While traditional forms of therapy focus heavily on a survivor's ability to tell his or her story, the very nature of traumatic memory can present a challenge since survivors of trauma often struggle to find the verbal language to describe the terrifying events that have occurred. Survivors of childhood sexual abuse can be left in a state of re-experiencing the past as they face the overwhelming task of trying to find words for something that is often wordless. Researchers have identified the need for a "bridge" between the non-verbal and the verbal however, studies in this area are lacking. The purpose of this research is to examine the lived experience of using therapeutic enactment as a supplementary tool to address the fragmented and wordless memories of childhood sexual abuse. Through an ethnographic research design, four women have participated in this study. These women share with us their stories and take us on a journey through their experience of using therapeutic enactment to address memories of their abuse. From these stories, four dominant themes emerged. These themes - re-connection, voice, empowerment, and corrective re-experiencing - appear in varying degrees and indicate an overall positive and reparative experience.

Abstract:
Abstract This qualitative interview study was designed to understand how early literacy experiences continue to influence individuals as they become adult readers. The study utilized a case study methodology that allowed detailed descriptions of participants’ recollections of early literacy experiences and descriptions of the participants’ current reading habits. The researcher, working from a constructivist paradigm, worked to find evidence to explore what features of early reading experiences might compel an individual to turn to reading again and again, or to choose to abstain from reading. The following research questions guided this study: “What specific memories do adult readers recall about early reading experiences?” “What is the nature of the influence of early reading experiences on lifelong reading habits as reported by adults?” and “What is the nature of the influence of lifelong reading habits on social and professional life as reported by adults?” Seven participants shared their earliest memories of literacy experiences, as rooted in family and school contexts, along with explanations of the uses of reading in their adult lives. The researcher employed a typological analysis to determine how participants’ memories of early literacy experiences impacted their adult reading habits. The many facets of early reading experiences that influenced the participants’ reading habits could be categorized as positive, neutral, or negative. Most individuals experienced a combination of positive and negative literacy experiences, and the nature of these experiences influenced the participants’ adult reading habits in particular ways. The results of the analysis supported prior research in the field about the influence of teachers and the importance of early literacy instruction, and highlighted in particular, the emotional impact of successes or perceived failure in learning to read.

Some studies have already examined the relationship between the traumatic impact and centrality of shame memories and SA and the relationship between posttraumatic growth and psychopathology. Furthermore, there is research exploring the impact of EMWS with parents and peers on SA and the relationship between SA and resilience. Since, to the best of our knowledge no prior studies related early emotional memories, posttraumatic growth, and SA, the general aim of this study was to explore the association between the traumatic impact and centrality of shame memories, EMWS with parents and peers, posttraumatic growth and SA, and particularly, to explore if the traumatic characteristics of shame memories and the centrality of these experiences would have the same impact on SA and on posttraumatic growth, since, through the literature review, both posttraumatic growth and psychopathology could result from trauma-like experiences. The cross-sectional study included two populations (student and adult samples) but, since there were significant differences we decided to introduce population as a control variable in the subsequent models and thus, only the total sample was used (N = 515: Mage = 27.36; SD = 11.69). Partial correlations revealed positive, negative, moderate and significant correlations between variables in study. Two moderated mediation models were estimated using PROCESS revealing positive and significant direct and indirect effects, through the centrality of shame memories, of memories with traumatic impact and posttraumatic growth or SA. In conclusion, there is a direct and indirect association between traumatic impact of early shame experiences and SA and posttraumatic growth.

Abstract:
Developing positive relationships with nature through outdoor play and education may lead to increased environmental consciousness in adults. Building on past research showing the influence of early memories on adult decision making, this study strives to understand how childhood play outdoors relates to adult values of nature and their potential desire to share similar outdoor experiences with others. Utilizing the Nature Relatedness Scale and semi-structured qualitative interviews, I have explored a deeper understanding of the relationship between parents' memories of play outdoors and their subsequent decisions for their children. Reflecting on many of my own meaningful outdoor experiences alongside those of my parent participants, I have discovered that nature experiences are valued across different perspectives. Due to memorable outdoor experiences, these adults have taken action to offer their children similar meaningful opportunities in nature.

Since the late Qing and early Republican, historians have debated about the four big mysteries of Qing四大奇案, which were popular stories about Qing Dynasty: Empress Xiaozhuang's rumored marriage to Dorgon太后下嫁; Qing Shizu’s entering a monastery順治出家; Qing Shizong’s inheriting the throne雍正奪嫡; and Qinglong as a son of a Han family, the Chens, in Haining乾隆出身海寧陳家. Evinced by many unofficial histories and popular novels, the four big mysteries were well and alive in late Qing society. While historians treat these mysteries as suspicious rumors, this thesis uses the perspectives of collective memory and narrative production in order to examine the ways in which the emperors in these mysteries are in effect fabricated. I contend that the rewritings and literal sequels of high Qing emperors in the four big mysteries were not only products of public entertainment, but they also represented the Han’ s traumatic memory and their ideals of anti-Manchuism, especially as they are correlated with the “new novels” 新小說employed by late Qing intellectuals to aid their pursuit of the national enlightenment in modern China. In the first chapter, I assert that contemporary historical novels of Qing emperors are mostly based on the re-writings since late Qing. In my view, without discovering the “roots” of the late Qing novels readers would be able to misunderstand the “routes” that the contemporary history novels have paved. In the second chapter, I reevaluate the classical genre of Chinese novels: yanyi演義 from early Republican China. During this period, Yanyi connected the thoughts of national enlightenment and “salvation and survival” 救亡圖存 in the “new novel”, giving rise to what I call “new yenyi”新演義, which was apparently different from the original one. In the following chapters, I focus on how the Qing emperors, such as Shunzhi順治, Yongcheng雍正 and Qianlong乾隆, are portrayed to express Ming-Qing transitional dynasty memory and the trauma of Manchu’s political persecution by way of using literary symbols, such as corresponding pattern of “body” and “nation” in literature. In the third chapter, by discussing how the courtesan Dong Xiao-wan, who was married to an adherent of Ming Mao Xiang, was referred to the princess consort Donggo, I argue that the Shunzhi emperor was “adherentized” 遺民化to an adherent of a former dynasty. In the fourth chapter, I examine the ways in which the Yungcheng Emperor, a great monarch of Qing dynasty, is transformed into a despot and peculiarly into a knight-errant, particularly his violent death, in which he was decapitated by the female knight-errant Lü Siniang (Lü’s fourth daughter). In the fictional narrative, the assassination of Yung-cheng (the fourth son of the Qing royal family) by Lü’s fourth daughter leads the readers to contemplate the Qing’s legitimacy and the position of the Han Chinese against the Manchus. Finally, by analyzing the narrative of Qianlong as a son of Han family, instead of Manchu family, I aim to explain the historical cause of Qianlong’s southern tour, namely, filial piety, as he was alternated to a kind of nostalgia for the hometown where he was born.

Abstract:
Although several studies have addressed the negative impact of early experiences of abuse, external shame and self-criticism on social anxiety (SA), few studies have addressed the impact of early experiences of lack of warmth/safeness and fears of compassion on SA, and none addressed all of these variables together, particularly differentiating the role of these experiences with parents and peers. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the differential impact of early memories of warmth and safeness (EMWS) with parents and with peers in SA, exploring the mediating role of external shame, self-criticism and fears of compassion in this relationship. The cross-sectional study included two community samples: university students (N= 762; Mage = 20.46; DP = 3.72) and nonstudents (N = 180; Mage = 37.84; DP = 10.76). The non-invariance of the hypothesized model for students and non-students was revealed and two path analysis were performed to test the model in each sample. In both samples, external shame, self-criticism and fear of receiving compassion from others, fully mediated the relationship between EMWS (with parents and peers) and SA, with this fear of compassion partially mediating the relationship of external shame and self-criticism with SA. The relation between external shame and SA was also mediated by self-criticism. In non-students the mediating role of the fear of self-compassion was added, demonstrating that the effect of fear of compassion on SA varied according to the sample. The impact of EMWS with peers, compared to parents, showed a greater impact on SA. Its effect on the other variables also varied according to the sample. Clinical implications highlight the importance of targeting not only self-compassion, but also fears of compassion, specially fear of receiving compassion from others. Other results are discussed, as well as other clinical implications and contributions of the present study.
