Abstract:
Compelling research indicates that the mental health trajectory of an individual begins before birth. Engaging with parents and young children based on risk factors for future mental health problems allows an opportunity to guide the trajectory in a positive direction. When behavioral and emotional problems do emerge, intervening early has a much better chance of helping the child get back on track with social–emotional development before issues become entrenched. Using a case example, this chapter highlights the importance of developing systems within health care and other settings for early identification and treatment of both parental and early childhood mental health problems. Specific strategies for implementation of screening, assessment, and intervention are explored in depth for parents and young children.

Abstract:
Early intervention strategies for treating psychosis before the manifestation of frank disease have blossomed as research shows the positive impact of treatment earlier in the development of psychotic illness. Because of the uncertainty of individual patients’ conversion to an easily diagnosable condition however, ethical concerns have arisen in establishing the appropriate balance of risks and harms, in obtaining informed consent, and in conducting general research and treatment of minors. This chapter examines the ethics of early intervention from a historical perspective, tracing advances in research ethics that allowed the conduct of research with children who may develop psychotic illness to the clinical ethics required in offering early interventions themselves. The authors explore the implications of early intervention’s introduction into the psychiatric diagnostic manual and recommend avenues for further discourse.

Abstract:
More than seventy-five years since the end of World War II, military interventions—rather than major wars—have emerged as a defining feature of contemporary geopolitics. Yet, for all the fierce policy debates over interventions and their lessons, scholars have largely ignored the systematic linkages between these smaller-scale wars and transformations in the grand strategies of states that prosecute them. Wars of Revelation develops a new theory—the informational theory of strategic adjustment—to explain why military interventions can be crucibles of grand strategy. It argues that, by prosecuting a military intervention, states glean rich and rare information about adversaries’ capabilities and intentions, as well as their own military power and cost tolerance. The uniquely costly nature of warfighting renders this data particularly credible. Amidst background conditions of intense interstate competition and pervasive uncertainty, states face strong incentives to reassess their grand strategies in light of this new information. This process of grand-strategic updating begins with a reassessment of the strategic assumptions directly tested on the battlefield, but it doesn’t end there. Indeed, the grand strategic effects of military interventions are far-reaching because information conveyed via warfighting is widely extrapolated to related strategic assessments. Wars of Revelation demonstrates the plausibility of the informational theory of strategic adjustment in three historically detailed case studies that trace the evolution of American grand strategy over the course of the Cold War and into the early post-Cold War era: the Korean, Vietnam, and First Gulf Wars.

Abstract:
A Step-By-Step Guide for Coaching Classroom Teachers in Evidence-Based Interventions highlights the consultation strategies used by the coaches on the PATHS to PAX Project with the Johns Hopkins Center for Prevention and Early Intervention working with classroom teachers in Baltimore City public schools. The PATHS to PAX Project is the integration of two of the most widely disseminated, evidence-based, universal school-based preventive interventions: the PATHS curriculum and the PAX Good Behavior Game, or PAX GBG. This book reviews the Universal Coaching Model and the Indicated Coaching Model for supporting teacher implementation, including establishing positive coach–teacher relationships as well as coaching strategies that reflect core principles of behavior change, such as modeling, reinforcement, and performance feedback. Also presented are lessons learned and real-life case examples from coaches working with classroom teachers, and strategies for addressing coaching challenges and barriers. The selection, training, and supervision of coaches are discussed, and more than 30 handouts are included in the Appendix for coaches to adapt and use in their work with classroom teachers.
