Hagar, Bridget. "A preliminary examination of aging and sex on dichotic listening performance." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Communication Disorders, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8041.

Full text
Abstract:
Dichotic listening of auditory stimuli is a method of assessing brain lateralisation. Different stimuli are presented simultaneously to the left and right ears, with the listener reporting which stimulus is perceived most clearly. To date, several studies that have examined the effects of aging on dichotic listening performance have indicated a pronounced right ear advantage (REA) with increasing age, but few studies have considered the effects of sex, and findings to date have been inconclusive. The aim of this research was to investigate whether the effects of age and sex resulted in a difference in the magnitude of the REA in both undirected and directed attentional tasks. Forty sex-matched, right-handed subjects with normal hearing or symmetrical bilateral sensorineural hearing loss participated in a series of directed and undirected dichotic listening tasks using consonant-vowel (CV) stimuli. The interaural intensity difference (IID) was modulated randomly during the undirected attention task. Results indicated that all groups (age & sex) showed a REA for both undirected and directed dichotic listening tasks. No age or sex-related differences were found. The findings were suggestive of a task-linked effect for dichotic listening performance. The use of CV stimuli, in combination with detailed testing via manipulation of the IID, appeared to minimize any possible age or sex-related differences. These findings have implications for theories on laterality and hemispheric asymmetry for older adults.

Abstract:
Otitis media is one of the most common childhood ailments seen in clinical practice today, yet the condition has rarely been identified in the skeletal remains of past populations. Other diseases of the middle ear and mastoid have been sporadically reported in the archaeological literature but no standardised criteria for their diagnosis in temporal bones have been established. A comparative study of different non-destructive methods of examination of human temporal bones was undertaken in order to determine the optimum strategy for future research. The material for the study consisted of 1244 temporal bones representing 688 individuals from seven English cemeteries dated to the Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods. The examination of such a wide range of material facilitated determination of optimum diagnostic criteria while eliminating single site bias. It also allowed a comparison to be made, of the prevalence of ear disease, between populations separated both geographically and chronologically. The inclusion in the study of the human skeletal meterial from a medieval leprosy hospital cemetery at Chichester afforded the opportunity to investigate the possibility that ear disease was more prevalent in those individuals who had suffered from leprosy. A review of the documentary evidence for the treatment of middle ear disease in the past suggests that, prior to the introduction of antibiotic therapy, no truly effective treatment was available and, therefore, palaeopathological evidence is unlikely to have been influenced by therapeutic intervention. In the preparation of skeletal reports the temporal bones should, ideally, be examined using a combination of methods. Two methods are recommended as being the most useful where resources are limited but in the identification of particular pathological conditions other methods proved useful. This research has demonstrated that middle ear disease in ancient populations can, with some certainty, be diagnosed using the proposed criteria, thus removing the barrier to future comparative research in this field.

Full text
Abstract:
Young adults 18-25 years of age in the United States are experiencing a new world as they transition to young adulthood in college. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the eating behaviors of the young college population. The present study will examine the kinds of foods college students eat and how they make decisions regarding food consumption. The methodology of the present study consists of a quantitative survey, which includes questions about gender, living arrangements, convenience, and student eating habits. The sample size is comprised of 228 students at the University of Central Florida. A regression model is used to explore the influence of the independent variables, which include gender; living arrangement; convenience; and health have on eating habits. Findings indicated that convenience significantly influence eating habits (p [less than] .001). Gender, living arrangements, and health, however, did not significantly influence the eating habits of the college student respondents. A second regression model examined the potential effects of gender, living arrangements, convenience, and health- weight gain on eating habits. Again, convenience was the only significant independent variable that has an influence on eating habits (p[less than].001) while gender, living arrangements, and healthweight gain were not significant predictors.

Thesis, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Sektionen för teknokultur, humaniora och samhällsbyggnad, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-1311.

Full text
Abstract:
An Analysis of Interreg Projects across Europe A critical examination on the role of networks and the implementation of EU concepts The intention of this thesis project was to get a deeper insight into the effect the European Union can have in the regions of Europe, in particular through the workings of the Interreg program. From study the theoretical concepts, we wished to discover how these concepts were practically implemented through different projects and partnerships. Due to the informal nature of the European Union spatial planning, we also wished to understand the importance that networks play in the projects and the effect they have on the activities of the project partnerships. We decided that the best way to study this subject was through a comparison of two contrasting projects in different parts of Europe but that deal with similar concepts. The theoretical perspective we took to approaching the subject matter, was to include much of the theory and ideas on the workings of networks and the potential results they can bring. In particularly we focused upon networks in the context of the transfer of knowledge, and their importance for creating the environment for such transfer to occur, and the many elements that can support or hinder .Furthermore we looked at much of the theory behind the concepts that the EU promotes, such as Sustainability, the different models that can be followed, as well the suggested conflict between Cohesion and Competitiveness. For the comparison we chose two contrasting projects; - BalticMaster Interreg IIIB based in Karlskrona, Sweden, involving 40 partners - EARD Interreg IIIC based in Brandenburg, Germany, involving 10 partners Both projects were established under the intention of Sustainable Development in their respective regions. One based on protecting the Baltic Sea from oil spillages, and the second aimed at sustainable development of regions around airports. The comparisons in terms of networks were quite striking; one the one hand, BalticMaster was largely based on pre-existing networks between the different regions of the Baltic Sea and had an emphasis on partner interaction. On the other hand, EARD was a brand new project partnership with no history of collaboration between the regions and interaction of the partners was rare. In terms of EU concepts, there were similarities as both projects took a bottom up approach to the broad concepts and connected this concepts to their work and aims in different ways to make them relevant. Interestingly, those project participants that were interviewed shared a lack of understanding of some the concepts before undertaking the project, some by their own admission, even though it was the main theme of their project. Conclusions that could be drawn from the work included the interaction of concepts and networks, and how each can affect each other. EU concepts can form new partnerships and networks because common goals can be shared in new partnership under the broad concepts. Furthermore, strong networks can assist the concrete implementation of these broad concepts and assist in the understanding of these concepts across the project partnership. In conclusion, we can see that there are many advantages to the flexibility of the EU broad concepts and how Interreg allows them to be interpreted, but there are also many problems in trying to insure that what is funded by Interreg is faithful to the intent of those broad concepts. The challenge is how to strike a balance between the necessary flexibility and insuring the outcomes are in line with the intent.

Johnston, Keely Nicole. "Isolation of Listeria species and characterization of Listeria monocytogenes from a ready-to-eat seafood processing facility in British Columbia : examination of source, persistence, and risk." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/53550.

Full text
Abstract:
Foodborne Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) causes listeriosis, a rare but severe disease affecting at risk populations. Contamination of ready-to-eat (RTE) food has been linked with persistent Lm in the food processing environment (FPE), though mechanisms of persistence are not fully understood. Recent surveys in British Columbia (BC) detected Lm in seafood processing facilities and in RTE seafood products, yet little is known regarding Lm persistence and risk posed by strains from these sources. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of Listeria spp., including Lm, in a RTE seafood processing facility and assess persistence capabilities and potential risk of Lm recovered. Environmental and RTE food samples were collected over 18 months from a BC seafood processor (n=2,959) and assessed for the presence of Listeria spp. Isolated Lm were subjected to phenotypic and genetic characterization and a subset of isolates (n=28) were characterized for attributes that may facilitate FPE persistence: surface adherence, resistance to quaternary ammonium-based sanitizers, and adaptation to salt and refrigerated temperatures. Ability of cold-smoked salmon from this processor to support Lm growth, evaluation of virulence gene (inlA) sequence, and antibiotic resistance in the subset were used to assess consumer risk. Non-Lm Listeria spp. and Lm were found in 2.6% and 1.5% of samples, respectively. Molecular characterization revealed raw materials as the primary contamination source and two recurrent subtypes. Lm typically possessed one attribute favorable to persistence in the FPE, though there was no association between these attributes and strain recurrence. Cold-smoked salmon supported the growth of Lm and most strains recovered in the FPE (n=14) belonged to serotypes linked to listeriosis (92%) and possessed full-length inlA (93%). These strains, however, did not show resistance to antibiotics commonly used to treat listeriosis. The results of this study highlight the importance of processor-level control strategies to minimize Lm FPE persistence, product contamination, and risk to consumers. While these results improve understanding of Lm in a BC seafood processing environment, more work is needed to determine whether these strains are truly persisting in this FPE and how these findings compare to similar facilities.

Full text
Abstract:
The aural development process is governed by the attitude of the teacher, student, the time factor, methodology employed and materials available. This process and the aforementioned contributing factors are explored within the context of the current requirements of the aural and practical musicianship examination syllabi of The Royal Schools of Music, Trinity College and UNISA. Suitable methods are explored which should develop skills enabling the student to deal with sounds and their corresponding symbols, first in isolation then within a musical context with attention to the curriculum, musical skills and personal development of the student within a positive learning situation. Four main areas of development are isolated i.e. rhythm, pitch, harmony and critical ear skills. A suitable development programme is presented in each area focusing on systematic skill development.

Full text
Abstract:
As Canada continues its drive towards a national electronic health record the costs are mounting. With 256 projects underway the question has to be asked: what are the true costs of such an endeavor? Success hinges on cooperation at all levels and adequate funding in place to see it to completion. Has Canada taken into full consideration the impact that this project will have in the long run? One small part of a much larger project in rural Alberta puts a face on the huge undertaking. Nurses in one former health region adopted not only an Order Entry module but also began using computers for the first time in order to do their work. Nurses are one of the key end-user groups actually inputting the information into these systems. Is data entry something nurses need to be concerned with at all especially at the Order Entry level?
